HISTORY/SOUND/PEOPLE CITY PARK AND SOUND FORUM DESIGN
FREE SPACE
12 Weeks Master 1st year studio, Sep. 2017 - Dec. 2017 Site: Charlottesville , VA, United States Exhibition Works of Martin Luther King Exhibition in Charlottesville I redesigned Emancipation Park where the riot took place to convey the history as well as everything it brought through architecture and audio devices. I changed the unoccupied place where sculpture was moved away into a “void” that can be seen and heard. People look up and listen to the history. Then, they come to an absolutely quiet place to think about what is the real “Emancipation”.

SOUNDS STUDY A sounds study of Rotunda, University of Virginia, showed that at different places of Rotunda and its pavilion, there were different sounds environments.
other because of their location and architecturual pattern.
The sounds environments were diverse from each
Rontunda Hall: in the silence, sounds with echo.
Outdoor Corridor: sounds of winds in the building.
The Lawn: sounds feels from far away.
Beside Road: sounds become louder and louder.
SOUND OBJECT
A simple sound was selected and recorded (About 1~3 seconds). After hearing it for several times, on the basis of its impression, I imaged and drawed it down. So that the sound became a specific object and can be seen by others.

LEE’S STATUE
CENTER GLASS TOWER
lee’s statue
The Emancipation park is a small hill, and the old Lee’s statue was on the top of the hill. People can only see it by looking up. This upper and lower relationship is something needs to be broken.
emptyness
After moving the Lee’s statue, the emptyness was born. The emptyness does not means nothing, it means a lot.
sounds of removing statue
To let visitors notice that there was something here before, a frosted glass box was built. Speakers around it play the sound of moving statue( such as wraping and moving it) to indicate the past statue and the void now.

People can feel the light above it but can not hear anything, It is a good place to think about Emancipation.

Here is the project’s city facing facade. Visitors and locals can sit on the downtown facing steps and relax themselves. They are able to eat or drink something because the cafe in the pavilion is near these steps. It is a good place to have a short break and watch the downtown mall. It connected with the roof too, so that visitor are enable to leave here to another place to prevent a waste of turning back. Trees are planted here to provide shield for people in summer. 09

This project was willing to discuss about the residential unit which have yards between or above them. It studied the possibilities combining apartments in several established frames, and the possibilities assembling theae frames together. 12
SITE
PROBLEM The site is just beside a railway bridge, which is a big problem. The trains bring here noise and the bridge let a part of the site have terrible Light condition.
STRATEGY the outer side of the architecture is bright and expansive , it is designed to do Yoga and have a relaxing time with a exellent sight of lake.

COMBINATION OF FAMILY UNITS
To save space, the percentage of passage needs to be as lower as possible. Meanwhile, because of the slim site, the units' combination should not be too wide.
USE PROTOTYPES IN THE SITE
Devide the site into units.
The units near the railway are support rooms. THe units near road and river will be noisy, so that SOHO units are placed here.

BLUE COMMUNITY
8 Weeks 4th year studio , Nov. 2015 - Jan. 2016 Site: Hongkou District , Shanghai, China Group Work , Team Leader The site is the only remaining Waterfront traditional Lilong neighborhood in Shanghai. Compared to reforming this block to a tourist spot, this project retains the original function of the site and keeps the original residents in this block. This project studied the differnet possibility between the river and the city. Meanwhile, from a city's point of view, this project will bring new residents to this old area and promote the activity of this block , even of the whole district. 22
SITE There were many historical architectures remained in the site. It is also near the Huangpu River and Suzhou River (the main river of shanghai).
However, the old flood control wall blocked the sight from historical buildings to the river, which is unwise. IMPORTANT HISTORIC BUILDINGS

URBAN DESIGN & UNDERGROUND HUB
THE INTERSECTION
16 Weeks 5th year studio, Graduation Design, Mar. 2017 - Jun. 2017 Site: Hongkou District , Shanghai, China Urban Design part Groupwork Excellent Graduation Design In the face of the city gap problem brought by different city function of near blocks, this project used the strategy that insert inter-founction between the olf differnt city funcions to connect the divided city again. The underground hub connects sites and functions in different places and heights together. It plans people’s circulation again. Meanwhile, it keeps connectivity of view, and let people from different places be together here. 32
SITE The Site was devided into two parts by the light rail and high speed city road. The function of them are totally different.
block and it was surrounded by a series of sports and relaxing area( including park, tourist center, sports schools,ect.).
The north part was a sport block. The professional stadium, Hongkou Stadium was in this
The south part was a residential block. It was surrounded by markets and hotels.
The result of function gap was that the peak time of people amount in two parts of site were different, which leaded a waste of city resource.

INSIDE AND OUTSIDE
8 Weeks 3rd year studio, Nov. 2014 - Jan. 2015 Site: East Lake in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China Top 100 of the Rookies' Award for Architecture Inspired from the various actions of Yoga, the "L" shape became the core of this design. By piling up these volumes and connecting these volumes to the mountain, different types of spaces are created so that people will have different experiences within them. The inner space is quiet, narrow, dark, suitable for doing meditation, while the outer space facing the lake is expansive and bright, suitable for doing Yoga and recreation. 42
