TIM PRESLEY “These are unfinished because I couldn’t finish them, so I suppose they are finished. Being finished means that something’s over and many a time I don’t want that feeling to end. I’m strung out on anything that feels good. So,.. I tend to stay there. Sometimes I need to just forget about what my brain thinks is finished and enjoy the empty space...or the pausing....or the parts of the page or canvas that are blank. The best way to beat a bully..in this case : a blank part of the page...is to ignore it”.
SHAYDE SARTIN These are all part of a process. I’ve never been great at diaries or journals. I’ve always envied people that are able to write as a means of processing. These are distractions for me. An internal dialogue with my immediate surroundings and the memories they conjure up. Meditations on sexual insecurity and confusion. Consequential sex.
JESSICA ROJAS (JESS KRICHELLE)
I wanted to include these unfinished sketches because this is the very first time I’ve expressed abstract ideas onto paper and out into the world. I’ve been a fan of realism my entire artistic life and have always endeavored to achieve photo-realistic portraits. Including these sketches makes me feel like I’m listening to my inner thoughts more and allowing myself to be more vulnerable to the public for criticism than I was before. Abstract expression has enabled me to achieve different levels of expression that realism hasn’t allowed me to. These pieces are currently unfinished because I consider these “thumbnail” sketches from my sketchbook. Basically what I create in my sketchbooks are ideas that I want to get onto large canvases where I will be incorporating color into them with acrylic paint. I would be confident presenting them as ideas, but not as finished pieces. Yes, these images are ready to be seen by my followers on Instagram, but definitely not ready to be revealed at an exhibit. I go ahead and put them on Instagram only because I love sharing my process with those interested. I love testing out ideas while they’re small to see what gets a reaction and what doesn’t so that way I can get a better idea of which ideas to pursue. Sometimes what I love doesn’t get the reaction I want and so I ask myself “What makes this piece so different than this one?” And when I ask those questions I begin to pull aspects from each sketch and combine them. The marriage is usually what I’ve been wanting to express. It just takes a bit to get there: many posts, sketches, analyzations and realizations. Ultimately my intent as a female artist is to express female sexuality and same sex sexuality in my art. Whether it’s my figures performing sexual acts or just being naked, making people uncomfortable about sexuality is the idea I thrive on. Men have used the nude female body for all of art history and so for a woman to take it back and use it to promote sexuality from her perspective is challenging for viewers. I am scared to put these ideas into the world because I’ve never tried to before. They seem a bit taboo at this moment, but mainly because I’ve never touched a controversial subject before.
