Dear Colleagues, I am certain that you have a whiff of the world and India’s economic situation, and the challenges that are facing all businesses across the globe. Uncertainty continues to dominate, despite few efforts from the Indian Government to boost the economy. While these efforts may have lifted the spirits momentarily, I believe that the uncertain environment will prevail anywhere upwards of 12 — 18 months. Businesses are evolving in this environment and are sharpening their focus. Our company is also keeping a keen eye on the developments in the economy and making changes such that we continue our growth despite the challenges. Clearly, there is a sharper focus on managing the business prudently, with a focus on costs and exploring alternative business models. I believe this is the time to get much closer to customers, understand their needs, and service them better – and do it with speed! Hence, continue to keep your focus on implementation, with a heightened sense of urgency.
In many ways, these challenging times help shape new business models. At Weir India, we are laying significant emphasis on participating in our customer’s lifecycle. Our counterparts in Latin America have successfully demonstrated that ‘lifecycle participation’ — from selling products to servicing them creates a sustainable long-term business. This enables deeper relationships, higher degree of value for customers, and bigger opportunities of growth. At Weir India, we have built a foundation for strong service capability and infrastructure. In my last address, I had written to you that our service business is re-aligning and expanding its service capabilities. In the coming few months, we will re-organise this business such that it delivers true effectiveness for our customers, thus creating more depth in the value we offer. As an engineering company, our endeavour must be to keep our focus on continuous engineering innovation to meet emerging customer needs. This requires us to be closer to our customers, focus on innovative engineering solutions, and equally important, reduce our turnaround time on new products. I would like to see a far more focus on ‘frugal engineering’ that meets the demand of our customer’s emerging needs and keeps us ahead of the curve. I am happy that at Weir Minerals, we have made progress in new product
introductions and taking them to our customers. Some of the strategic initiatives at Weir BDK to unlock the company’s true potential are taking shape. I am glad that our colleagues at WBDK have taken a very significant step towards the future by launching their ERP system, one of the most advanced suites in the industry today. It is the foundation on which we need to build the identified enhancements. Launching the ERP has taken a lot of hard work and commitment from the entire organisation. While it may take a few months for the system to stabilise and function efficiently, I am glad to see that the entire team at WBDK is geared for the challenge. EnSci continues to spread and make a mark across the group. In the past few months, we have successfully collaborated with several group companies, such as SPM, Multiflo, and divisional marketing teams of Weir Minerals and Weir Oil & Gas to create value through our competencies.However, we need to push harder and continue our focus on delivering more customer value. I have mentioned that we are determined to grow our business, despite the challenging environment, and I believe that there is only one element that can make this happen – us. We are continuously working to enhance our people’s competency. As we do that, we need to keep our focus on implementation with a sense of urgency, get closer to our customers, and apply ourselves more to deliver value to them, no matter where we are in the organisation. Introduction of new products has been identified as a key growth driver for WMI to position itself as the number one solutions provider in the served markets. Though this

journey has begun, a lot of exciting challenges are anticipated in the future. Currently, close to 90% of the business is contributed by established products, a combination of slurry pumps, valves, and cyclones — each commanding a dominant market share. The company has expanded its product portfolio and intends to add several new products by the end of the year; this will change the distribution of the revenue pie. Rubber Sheet
In December 2011, WMI commissioned its industrial rubber manufacturing facility at Bangalore, an investment in line with its product expansion strategy. The unit is dedicated to introducing a range of rubber products, including mill liners, erosion-resistant rubber lining, rubber hoses, rubber liners for cyclones, screen media, polyurethane products, slurry pumps, and valve rubber parts. With this facility, WMI
has added significant strength to serve the stringent requirements of the Indian mining industry with a short lead time, competitive pricing, and high wear life products. The stateof-the-art facility includes precision equipment and an R&D laboratory to continuously improve the rubber material properties, thereby providing superior products to customers. In addition, the company has also developed a dedicated facility for manufacturing IsoGate valves within its Peenya unit. “Our commitment to growth is taking shape not only through infrastructure expansion, but also through the

development of an engineering talent pool with enhanced project management skills. This is imperative to handle larger projects and process solutions. We have added considerable focus in these areas too,” adds Surendra Menon. In March this year, the team introduced its first Linatex screen. It was a collaborative effort, wherein the India team collaborated with the DCO for screens in South Africa and the DCO for screen media in USA. The team has developed capability to start full-fledged production of the Velco Dewatering (VD) screen. It expects to be ready to manufacture horizontal single deck screens, by end of 2012, and subsequently, develop capabilities for horizontal double deck, banana single deck, and banana double deck screens.
Mechanical Seal
Another significant introduction was the first mechanical seal from its Unit-3 facility in Bangalore in June this year. The team, led by Appaswamy Karthikeyan, achieved this success after completion of assembly and testing for 100mm 6
mechanical seal. With this, WMI now manufactures and supplies six different sizes of mechanical seals, ranging from 100-112mm, covering 33 variants of pumps. The company has also undertaken trial production of 60mm size mechanical seal, which will cater to another 12 variants of pumps. By December 2012, WMI plans to manufacture mechanical seals in 26 different sizes, ranging from 35203mm. In addition, the company has developed competency to undertake refurbishment of seals of any make and supply spares such as machined parts and lapped seal faces. The slurry mechanical seal developed at WMI fulfils the highest standards required by the heavy-duty equipment, and is designed to deliver in adverse and demanding conditions.

One of the key focus areas is to generate IP out of India. In the last two years, the WMI team has filed provisional patents for seven inventions in the area of valves and ceramic parts for pumps and cyclones with the Indian Patent Office. Developing IP protected nextgeneration Isogate WB series valves and Mechanical Pinch (MP) Close Body (CB) valves were some of the significant achievements of WMI under the role of Valve DCO. The Isogate Mechanical Pinch (MP) valve is an enhanced version of the Weir Linatex Pinch valves, using the same patented Linatex sleeves, and is designed for a wide range of tough abrasive and corrosive applications. Isogate MPCB valve’s advanced design makes it more reliable to operate. In July this year, the team developed its first locally built, electronically controlled mine dewatering system for one of its premier customers in India. The project of the dewatering system development was a perfect example of collaboration, wherein WMI team worked closely with EnSci and Multiflo teams in Australia. “These are exciting times in my career, as I am a part of new product

introductions. There is a lot of learning, anxiety, and hard work that we are putting in as a team. I am enjoying every bit of it,” says Prudhvi Raj, Engineer at WMI. Mill liners, mill circuit pumps, and WBV pumps and hoses are amongst other significantly planned additions to the product portfolio. While all these products are finding their way to the market, there are several new products that are in the pipeline — from next-generation knife gate valves to Isogate Open Body Pinch Valve, ceramic impellers, etc. “Personally, I am quite excited about the opportunities we have at WMI. For me, the journey has just begun,” concludes KVSS Raju.
Vikas’ views growth of 2.9%, agricultural growth is unlikely to impact the overall GDP significantly. The mainstay of growth — services (59% of total GDP) — is now crumbling, recording just 6.9% growth in the first quarter. Industry grew at just 3.64% and manufacturing (55% of industry) was almost flat in the first four months, as was consequently the Index of Industrial Production (IIP).

With the calendar year coming to an end, it has been an uneven and tortuous ride for the Indian economy. Prima facia, exceedingly high number of scams unearthed in the past 20 months, the absence of any real fundamental change in the economy, and a high rate of inflation leading to a tight monetary policy may have further added to the predicament. Conventional wisdom suggests that the economy drives the market, especially when businesses do well. This is not entirely accurate. In practical terms, the causality is actually the other way around: markets provide the primary trigger to economic growth. However, if enabling policies, infrastructure, and governance systems are not in place, this growth will be short lived: the supply of goods and services will not increase fast enough, inflation will rise and trigger a process of monetary tightening. This is precisely what has happened in India over the last few years. With the first quarter recording 5.5% growth, India will have to grow at over 7% for the rest of the year just to keep pace with government estimates of 6.5% growth. Doing the math, that, or even sustaining 5.5% growth, is unlikely. Despite an improved monsoon and first quarter
But, this only presents one side of the picture; India is after all the third largest economy in Asia. Despite what seems to be a gloomy scenario, a lot of companies and long-term investors are still positive about India’s long-term prospects. FIIs pumped in USD 3.7 billion into India’s equity markets in September, a clear sign of rising expectations of the Indian government since the new finance minister began putting his plans into action. A hefty (though still insufficient) hike in diesel prices, the announcement of FDI in multibrand retail, and the postponement of a GAAR regime were a start. In response, the rupee rose bravely to a 4.5-month high of Rs 52.7/USD by the end of September, giving respite to importing businesses. If things do continue as they are (the government takes decisive measures to introduce more economic reform measures) – then the following quarters could continue to see rising foreign investor interest, and the festive season may yet prove to be merry, particularly given a vastly improved monsoon across large swathes of India. Statistically, manufacturing also should see improved figures for the following quarters, given the low base effect of the previous year. According to a report by Research and Markets, titled ‘India Mining Report Q2 2012’, by the year 2016, the Indian mining industry market is set to attain a size of USD 36.2 billion. The eight
core industries which include crude oil, coal, natural gas, petroleum refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement, and electricity have a combined weight of 37.90% in the IIP. This combined index has a shown a growth rate of 5.1% in September 2012 (Index value at 139) as compared to 2.5% in September 2011. So, what do we infer from all this? I believe, the negative impact of the global financial slow down is inevitable, but temporary. Companies will need to focus on optimal efficiency in resource deployment and effective execution. It is good to note that Indian companies overall have managed to record a 10% growth in earnings during the June quarter by an increased focus on margins, losing weight by shedding non-core businesses, cost cutting, and leaner management. Another critical aspect is government policies: these will need to produce an environment conducive for industry growth. Economies around the world have gone into quarantine hoping to isolate themselves from the financial slump, whereas the opposite needs to be done. I strongly believe that the present economic slowdown is just the flip side of globalisation, and is unavoidable under certain circumstances. Nevertheless, we would need to make the most of our resources, time, and energy. The previous downturn in 200809 actually enabled us to grow our market share through focused efforts in that direction. The period of the next 9-12 months could well prove to be the next inflection point for us to move into a higher orbit. I am in complete agreement with what Naveen mentioned in his address note in the first edition of inWeirIndia, we must ‘commit optimally and over deliver.’ 7

Global Capability WMI receives order for knife gate valves Weir Minerals India has received an order for manufacturing 190 knife gate valves from Weir Minerals Australia for the development of Hope Downsmine. The scope of the project includes knife gate valves of varying sizes, ranging from 2-24� in the WS, WB, and WH series, based on the applications. Weir Minerals India will be supplying these ready-to-fit valves that are going to be assembled with SMC instrumentation, accessories, and tubing.
EnSci develops retrofit kits for Weir SPM Pumps Weir SPM decided to provide additional pump retrofit solution to its customers to meet their customer needs. This involved retrofitting the new QWS and TWS range of fracking pumps onto the fracking trucks. Retrofitting was earlier managed by fracking companies and Weir SPM provided only the pumps. This business decision presented various challenges in terms of quick development of retrofits, managing the space available in the trucks, and installing the retrofits. A two-member manufacturing engineering team from EnSci travelled to Weir SPM to handle this task. The need was to design, manufacture, and install the retrofit kits on various
fracking trucks. A time span of two to three working days was designated for each truck at onsite locations. Each of the designs was unique and was developed to suit the space available in the various trucks. The task involved coordination with various suppliers, in-house design, manufacturing, and fabrication teams, and the EnSci offshore team. Components were designed, fabricated, procured wherever possible, and installed on the trucks within the given timelines. In the three months that the team was onsite, many designs were generated, three different solutions were developed. Totally, four trucks were readied.
WMI receives order for Isogate MPCB Valves Weir Minerals India (WMI) received its first order from Weir Minerals Europe for manufacturing air actuated Mechanical Pinch Closed Body (MPCB) Valves. The order includes pinch valves ranging from 50-150mm, with proximity sensors and spring return/standard actuators. Between 2011 and 2012, WMI has developed MPCB valves ranging from 25-300mm in manual actuation. This is being expanded into other actuations also. 8
EnSci designs dewatering pump EnSci’s Centrifugal Pump team delivered the first order to design dewatering pumps for Multiflo. This order included two pumps that are unique and were introduced for the first time in the market. The team only had the flow and head parameters as reference provided by Multiflo to design the pumps. The challenge was also to meet the maximum power requirement asked for by Multiflo. EnSci invested in a high-end design tool to develop several concepts that met the requirement specifications. Each of the concepts was validated by conducting computation fluid dynamic studies. The best concept was chosen for detailed design. The team developed detailed design using cavitation modelling for the first time in order to increase the efficiency and durability of the pumps. Designing the components for easy assembly, manufacturing, and maintenance was one of the biggest challenges. The final delivery to the customer included the 3D models of components, assembly models, detailed drawings, GA drawings, production, casting drawings, and detailed design reports. Both the pumps are already on the field. Post this successful delivery, EnSci has received another order to design five more pumps from Multiflo.

Collaboration Weir BDK collaborates with EnSci to build competitiveness
EnSci develops web-based application for Cyclone Code Automation delivery within a few hours! The IT application team at EnSci has developed a web-based Cyclone Code Automation application, which generates an automated code for cyclones, in just a few hours! The accompanying GA drawings can be viewed simultaneously, based on the code generated. The application functions as a single repository database, storing all
Lube oil system design for centrifugal pump Weir Gabbioneta entrusted EnSci to design a lube oil system in compliance with the API 610 and 614 standards. This system was earlier outsourced to local vendors in Italy. A lube oil system provides lubrication for a bearing in a multistage pump and every unit has to be custom-made as per the end customer requirement. The project involved line sizing as per the P&ID provided by the customer, including piping calculations, routing, selection of heat exchangers, and mechanical equipment such as valves, pumps, and lube oil tanks. The team created 3D models, generated GA drawings, bills of material, pipe isometrics, equipment selection and sizing details, datasheet for equipment, base frame design
the product details. For users, this application makes it easier to manage the product code and the corresponding BOM, with an option to download required details at any point. With the help of this tool, the overall time taken for processing a product request has drastically reduced— from a week to a few hours! documents, and the data sheets of the lube oil system and pump. The lube system hence designed is capable of operating continuously for long hours.
EnSci designs flexible machining fixtures for Weir BDK
EnSci designed an innovative machining fixture for Weir BDK, eliminating earlier inefficiencies such as different fixtures for each product size and limited accessibility to machining areas. EnSci’s fixtures accommodate multiple product sizes of a given valve family on a single fixture, thereby eliminating the need for multiple fixtures for each size. Additionally, enhanced features ensure ease of accessibility for machining. The solution has helped improve productivity for Weir BDK. It has also helped in saving significant costs towards multiple fixtures.
EnSci has been building its competence to help engineering companies become more competitive with their products by developing Value Analysis Value Engineering (VAVE) capability. A team of engineers, certified as Associate Value Specialists, trained in analysing products and developing their competitiveness for the market, are collaborating with the Weir BDK team to enhance the competitiveness for a few the fastmoving products. Weir BDK, with its legendary product designs, embarked on making them more competitive in the market where the cost and feature competition is intense. Three products: gate valve, globe valve, and check valves were selected for the project. Traditional designs and features needed change to meet the market expectations. With a strategy to grow the market several fold, it was an apt strategy for Weir BDK to make its products deliver better value by making them cost and feature competitive. The VAVE project, flagged off early this year, is looking at cost reduction in manufacturing and delivering the product and enhancing its features. EnSci’s collaboration with Weir BDK has gathered significant steam and several project milestones have already been achieved. In a matter of few months, the joint team of EnSci and Weir BDK have completed the redesign of the gate valve and developed a sample. The redesign is likely to deliver a weight reduction of 30kgs, resulting in significant cost saving from material usage and freight handling. Hand wheels for several valves, which were earlier manufactured in different sizes and dimensions, were standardised across valve products, leading to reduction in its size and material consumption. 9

Financial reporting to unlocking organisation value: a journey of the finance function “We have set ourselves on a journey from the traditional role of a ‘Scorekeeper’ (data recording and controllership) to becoming ‘Value Integrators’, primarily engaged in business performance optimisation, providing predictive insights, leading in enterprise risk management, and helping in business decision-making. This is a big change, which will give our people the opportunity to learn and grow. We are trying to establish a ‘best in class’ function through investment in people and processes.” Vikas Goel Vikas Goel, Director Finance, Weir India, has an interesting take on how the finance function at Weir India is evolving. Vikas elaborates the role of the function in a few words, “We are undertaking a journey to bring more agility to the organisation. The finance function today is far evolved from merely number reporting to looking at value integration, helping to unlock the value of the organisation.”

What this means is that the finance function has moved beyond its traditional purview of score-keeping on a day-to-day basis – accounts management, book keeping, and managing the money – to a higher echelon in the value chain. Weir India has four distinct businesses (two manufacturing and two services). The finance function is today transforming itself to help the business manage its risks, carry out business analysis, and help it take informed decisions for the future. “It’s not just the change of role for the function, but a significant change in our thought process,” remarks Vikas. The evolution of the function is coming alive through a new structure, several projects, and training and development
being undertaken for the people in the function. Assuming more responsibilities and a bigger role in the organisation, the new finance structure was rolled out in January 2011. Broadening their scope of work, unit level finance The function has outlined a 7-point goal to focus on: 1 Reporting transformation, wherein teams are working hard to improve accuracy of reporting and quality of analysis. 2 Achieving operating cash flow targets, improving the profitability, and working capital of the business. 3 Enhancing product margins by looking at cost models, product mix, and costing. 4 Improving internal control environment, which impacts both the business and its employees. Improving internal control environment makes the organisation a ‘safer’ place as it discourages unethical practices and inappropriate ways of doing business, thereby minimising the employees liability and business risks. 5 Ensuring statutory compliance through a pro-active process. 6 Supporting growth strategy by enabling proper analysis, environment research, and developing appropriate insights and viewpoints for business decisions, such that they are aligned to market. 7 Aligning to the Weir Group culture, such that the function follows a lean model and values people by developing them through training.

Today, a corporate-level team set up to support the unit level finance controllers, also steers the finance function to set the strategic direction for the organisation. This team is referred to as the ‘Centre of Competence’ within the department.

Says Manoj Grover, Weir India,“With clear goals, the new structure within the finance team is a big leap forward. It throws up a lot of opportunities to make a significant impact on the business and to grow at an individual level.”

In the far corner of EnSci’s office, sits a uniquely talented engineering analysis team. “I believe that the team has been in the shadows, though they have done some cutting-edge work which really showcases EnSci’s capability to undertake complex engineering assignments,” says Umesh Chandra, Head, EnSci. He continues by adding, “Ease of collaboration with in-house design, hydraulics, and plant engineering teams, and their ability to work with clients remotely, adds to the significant strength of the Engineering Analysis Team. These abilities deliver considerable value for our customers.” Engineering analysis capability is a significant and unique strength at EnSci and it mushroomed with the joining of Satish Kulkarni, who today heads the nine-member team. Over the years, the team has built competence in a spectrum of analytical work. It offers expertise in four broad areas: validating designs, new product development, failure investigations, and complex analysis.
In this computer-aided design (CAD) era, designers might undermine the load bearing capacity of a product and this could prove dangerous for its functionality. Using advanced software, the Engineering Analysis Team can simulate the physical environment in a virtual space to validate the strength of the product. Similarly, during the development of a new product, physical prototyping is an important step. The Engineering Analysis Team has the competence to develop computer models. These models help in optimising design through multiple iterations on a variety of geometry and loading scenarios, thus saving significant time and money. The most sophisticated competence of the team is failure investigation. Products perform differently in working conditions as opposed to design conditions. External factors, such as equipment abuse (overloading, wrong materials, etc.), environmental issues, or even faulty designs could cause the failure of
an equipment. The Engineering Analysis Team is capable of simulating the working conditions in a virtual environment to identify the reasons for product failure. They are also capable of suggesting modifications to the equipment or solutions, to fix/solve the problem. Apart from working on the above mentioned analysis, the team also has developed a methodology to predict behaviour of hyper-elastic and other non-metallic materials. Complex loadings, such as seismic and transient dynamics, have also been analysed for cyclone clusters and process equipments. Manufacturing automation and fixture design teams collaborate extensively with the engineering analysis team to optimise their designs. “Engineering analysis is going to be an important link in product development, new product design, or re-engineering. Globally, stringent regulations in every sphere of industry are becoming a reality. Regulations emphasise on safety, thus, making validations and testing of critical equipment a necessity. I believe this is a very positive change and see this as a potential for growth of our services,” says Satish Kulkarni. EnSci has invested in talent and technology to build the competence of the Engineering Analysis Team. Today, the team uses some of the most advanced software tools such as Ansys, Radioss, PumpLinx, CF Design, etc. The unique combination of engineering knowledge, ability to collaborate with other EnSci teams, advanced software, ability to work remotely with clients, and the extensive cross-industry experience of the team is of great value for clients, not just within the Weir Group but outside as well. Satish, who has spent more than two decades in the domain of engineering analysis, is the
backbone of this team. A majority of his experience comes from participating in engineering analysis assignments for a variety of customers, including automotive, aero, and heavy industries. His extensive experience in engineering analysis was acquired at GE Transportation, Pratt & Whitney, IR, etc. “I was extremely surprised when I reflected on my career. In these two decades, I have been a part of more than 1,000 analysis assignments in various industries. Honestly, I am looking forward for another 1,000!” gleams Satish. His team of young engineers at EnSci is equally excited at the opportunity. “It has been a fascinating journey. The complexity of every assignment propels us for success. There has been a large amount of learning. Developing expertise in complex engineering work is a very satisfying experience,” says the team in chorus. The team is already exploring new horizons. It has acquired the capability to carry out steel structure and pipeline stress analysis, a capability that could be of immense use for oil & gas and plant engineering companies. Some of the new areas it is preparing to acquire competence in are rotodynamics, CFD capability in modelling multi-face fluid flow, and predicting abrasion and erosion. The team is also planning on developing fluid-structure interaction capability which helps simulating actual flow condition and its effect on structures.

Since 2008, Weir India’s Team Social Responsibility (TSR) programme – Weir Cares has committed itself to making a difference in the lives of its employees and the less-privileged. Aiming at inclusive growth, the programme focusses on the three socially relevant issues of education, health, and sustainable livelihoods. The programme is based on the core belief that the foundation of human empowerment begins with basic and positive education, a healthy life, and capacity-building support that enables a sustainable livelihood. Appreciation on achievements. While working, I look forward to doing my work with utmost zeal. I tend to lose track of time - it flies so fast. Once the task is completed and gets good results, I am genuinely satisfied and feel great! It’s the best when my boss or a senior recognises my work and appreciates it; this for me is a big motivational factor to perform even better.
First up is the freedom. The company philosophy is clear: hire great talent, tell them what is expected, publicly reward the doer, and get the hell out of the way. This gives a complete sense of ownership of the task at hand.
Encouragement by any employee, even if it’s for a small thing, is very heartening for me. Whether in professional or personal life, this encouragement helps me to further encourage and appreciate others and pass on the good feeling. The greenery at my office campus also keeps me motivated and energised through the day. Every day when I reach and leave work, the green and verdant surroundings never fails to refresh me.
Second is the commitment shown by the management in achieving the glorious set goals. Anything the strategic management team decides, no matter how big, they tend to achieve it — instilling in us the belief that what we do, transforms into concrete results. Third would be being constantly shown the bigger picture to give us a clear idea of where the company is headed. Tell us a little bit about your life at Weir Minerals India? Life at Weir Minerals India has been pretty exciting right from the day I walked through the door in December 2010. The days go by very quickly here and life is never boring at Weir. The team has been extremely supportive, receptive, and has helped my integration into the Weir family. I am fortunate to have such a young, energetic, and positive team to work with. It has been receptive to new ideas, implementing changes in the way we work to become lean and agile. In contrast to earlier assignments, the entire organisation, from the top down, shares the same vision with a sense of never being satisfied with its achievement. It’s the cultural ambience in the organisation that drives the positive energy into me. 16
KVSS Raju, often referred to as only Raju, has been in the thick of things at Weir Minerals India (WMI), as it introduces a slew of new products for the domestic market and inter-company customers. Motivated by his challenging assignment, Raju is brimming with confidence about the prospects of Weir Minerals India. Though it was difficult to take some time out from his busy schedule, Raju did do so for the following interview with inWeir India. How has introducing new products from Weir Minerals India been a challenge? Introduction of new products is always a big challenge. Developing products of global standards yet competing with the local established players is never easy. The addition of technical competency to support product development has been a big challenge. We have focused on grooming and nurturing talent to venture into unknown waters through extensive training and mentoring processes. I am happy to share that the team has responded well and is now more confident to take on new product development and be a part of the sparkling future ahead.

At an early age, I was able to speak four languages — Bengali, Telugu, Hindi, and English. I am married to Vasavi, a qualified lawyer, who chose to be a homemaker and bring up our two boys — Samanyu (14 yrs) and Sahishnu (10 yrs). I enjoy nature and love travelling. Fortunately, my wife and kids share the same passions and we often travel with friends to hill stations and forests. I also enjoy photography and interior designing in my spare time. Networking with different people across a wide spectrum of society is another interest I enjoy. I believe that life is always interesting no matter what and that there is always a better tomorrow.

Weir Group set to deliver double digit profit growth in 2012 “These results bear out the strength of our welldiversified Group. Effective execution of our growth strategy in Minerals and Power & Industrial and a good first contribution from acquisitions have offset the challenging pressure pumping market conditions faced by Oil & Gas . In the second half, we anticipate a strong performance from the Minerals and Power & Industrial divisions and some improvement in Oil & Gas upstream pressure pumping aftermarket demand relative to the second quarter, although the timing of any improvement remains uncertain. Assuming no significant change in macroeconomic conditions, full year profit before taxes, amortisation and exceptional items is expected to be between £440m-£460m with the low-end of the range reflecting no improvement on Q2 in upstream Oil & Gas.” Keith Cochrane, Chief Executive
The Group’s global presence and diverse end market exposure, together with targeted cost reductions, ensure it is on track to deliver year end (2012) profit before taxes, amortisation and exceptional items in the range of £440m-£450m. This is within the range of our expectations in July and in- line with current market consensus. Conditions remained mixed across the Group’s end markets, impacted by increasing global macroeconomic uncertainty and resultant decline in certain commodity prices. As anticipated, the third quarter saw moderate revenue and profit growth as a result of the lower opening order book and reduced activity levels at SPM and Mesa. Group revenue and profits were ahead of the previous year’s third quarter, benefiting from the impact of last year’s acquisitions which continue to perform satisfactorily. Group operating margins for this quarter were in-line with both the previous year’s margins and our expectations. Reported order input for the Group in the third quarter was down by 8% in the previous year and 15% lower on a like-for-like basis. As a result, reported order input for the 39 weeks increased by 2% (H1: up 8%) against the previous year’s period. On a like-for-like basis for the 39 weeks order input was 6% lower (H1: down 1%) with original equipment orders down by 18% (H1: down 13%) and aftermarket orders up by 6% (H1: up 11%).

WMI showcases Lean Manufacturing to CII Delegates Weir Minerals India (WMI) hosted a team of 27 CII delegates from various companies including Amara Raja Batteries, BHEL, Brakes India, Daimler India, ElgiEquipments, Galla Goods, HC Hydraulic Technologies, Pernod-Ricard, TAFE, TCS, amongst others in June 2012, to showcase its best practices in lean manufacturing.The trip was organised by CII Institute of Quality. WMI has successfully implemented the World-Class Manufacturing practices under lean manufacturing. The CII delegates, during their visit to Weir Minerals India, learnt about these achievements and experience. The delegates took a tour of the

The new gym at WBDK
A new gym at Weir BDK A swanky new gym was inaugurated by Mr. Naveen Ganzu, Country Manager, Weir India, within the Weir BDK facility. The gym is dedicated for the use of WBDK employees and
is a part of the overall employee welfare programme. It is located near the canteen and is spread across 1200 sq. ft. The gym has some of the latest equipment, including cross-trainers, treadmill, multi-gym, weights, etc. A fulltime instructor has been hired to ensure employees have access to a professional and trained person while working out in the facility.
Recruitment drive at EnSci EnSci had three recruitment drives for newly graduated engineers in July this year. More than 900
candidates participated in these drives. 30 engineers, including preliminary trainees, have been hired from the drive.

Customer wins Weir Minerals India grabs a turnkey project for slurry transportation at Srikakulam Weir Minerals India (WMI) was selected by one of India’s largest heavy minerals producer, Trimex Sands, for a turnkey project for slurry transportation. Trimex Sands is planning to set up a system to transport sand from their preconcentration plant (PCP) to the minerals separation plant (MSP) which is about 2 kms away. Currently, the company deploys road facility to transport the sand from PCP to MSP. The WMI project, a turnkey solution, will help Trimex Sands build efficiency in the transportation of sand. WMI is responsible for setting
up this slurry transportation project and the dewatering system. The project involves design, manufacture, and commissioning of a long-distance PCP to MSP sand transportation pipeline system. The location of these plants is on a coastal region,east of Bay of Bengal. WMI will provide solutions including slurry preparation for pumping and subsequent dewatering. The pipeline, once completed, will transport 75 MTPH of minerals sands from the PCP to the MSP in the mineral-rich zone of Srikakulam. WMI has completed basic detail engineering of the pipeline. The pipeline is expected to be operational in January 2013.
EnSci delivers its first assignment to Wooshin Engineering India for checking fixtures The manufacturing automation team at EnSci delivered one of its first assignments for the automotive industry. The assignment was to design a set of ‘checking fixtures’ for Wooshin Engineering, a supplier for Ford India. Checking fixtures are used for geometry validation, and checking dimensions and tolerance of car products when welded together before they are fitted into the body of a car. The checking fixtures, designed by EnSci team, can be used for two different types of car variants which build efficiency in Wooshin Engineering’s operations.
EnSci’s Engineering Analysis Team develops a solution for British Rema to contain low-impact explosion EnSci’s Centrifugal Pump team delivered the first order to design dewatering pumps for Multiflo. This order included two pumps that are unique and were introduced for the first time in the market. The team only had the flow and head parameters as reference 20
provided by Multiflo to design the pumps. The challenge was also to meet the maximum power requirement asked for by Multiflo. EnSci invested in a high-end design tool to develop several concepts that met the requirement specifications. Each of the concepts was validated by conducting computation fluid dynamic studies. The best concept was chosen for detailed design. The team developed detailed design using cavitation modelling for the first time in order to increase the efficiency and durability of the
Weir BDK bags a series of valves order from United Phosphorus Limited Weir BDK (WBDK) bagged a significant order from United Phosphorous Limited to supply a range of gate, globe, check, and butterfly valves for their new sulphur recovery unit at Jhagadia, Gujarat. The WBDK team collaborated on the technical parameters with the client’s project team emphasising on the criticality of the application and the need for using valves of world-class quality. The client, impressed with the competence of WBDK team, strongly recommended WBDK valves in their evaluation. While the client wanted delivery of the valves within 8-10 weeks, the WBDK team emphasised on the fact that hurried processes for such applications would result in failure, accidents, huge project loss, etc., convincing the client for a timeline of 14-16 weeks. Subsequently, the WBDK team also secured the order for non-critical valves.

Weir BDK bags order from Shriram EPC for Abhijeet Solar Power Project Weir BDK bagged an order to supply globe valves (for high temperature thermic fluid) and IBR valves from Shriram EPC for the Chennai-based Abhijeet Solar Power project. The competition for the order was stiff between Audco, KSB, and WBDK. The client was impressed with WBDK team’s professionalism, technical competence, and the appropriate design of stem packing suitable for fugitive emission. During the pitch, specific drawings were prepared by the engineering team of WBDK and these were presented with technical clarity.
Weir BDK makes a breakthrough with Grasim Industries Weir BDK secured an order to supply ball valves to Grasim Industries for their viscous staple fibre project. Despite stiff competition and the client’s inclination towards other vendors, the WBDK team took on the challenge. WBDK engaged the client with discussion and demonstrated two sample valves and explained its features and working. Eventually, the client was convinced and placed the order. The team is happy about the breakthrough and considers it a good opportunity for future business.
Weir India stall at IMPE, New Delhi
Weir India marks its presence at IMPE For the first time, all four business units of Weir India made a significant presence at the International Mineral Processing Exhibition (IMPE), held during 24-27 September at the front lawns of Hotel Ashok, New Delhi. The opportunity was used to showcase the Weir brand in India to a focussed audience from the minerals and mining industry. Weir India was one of the largest exhibitors at the event, with a stall size exceeding 70 sq m. The stall also bagged an award (2nd best national exhibitor) at the exhibition for concept and design. The Weir India stall had selected products (valves) from Weir BDK, products from Weir Minerals, and a specially created mill circuit model, as its centre piece. The centre piece was an element of attraction at the exhibition, often becoming an area of engagement with customers. The exhibition coincided with the sixtieth birth year of International Mineral Processing Congress, a major driving force for the promotion of scientific and technical knowledge in mineral processing and extractive metallurgy worldwide. Maa Sarbamongala Quality Sands: from a humble beginning to a roaring business Based in the Bardhaman district of West Bengal, Maa Sarbamongala Quality Sands (MSQS) has expanded from a small sand extracting business in 1998 to a significant operation across 13 sites on the river Damodar. While the company started with the traditional manual dredging method, with a turnover of 120 trucks of sand every day, today, it is has a daily turnover exceeding 600 trucks of sand – much of this has been because of Mr. Jogendra Burman’s (owner of MSQS) decision to partner with Weir Minerals India as its technology solution supplier.
Since 2007, MSQS has been using Weir Minerals India’s pumps to extract sand from the Damodar River. Today, 18 Warman pumps run at 13 sites on the Damodar riverbed, with 9 pumps kept on standby. Encouraged by the success with the pumps, MSQS is now considering Weir Minerals India as its long-term technology partner to explore more technological solutions. For us, there are few things that matter as much as seeing our customers succeed using our technology!
