In August of 2011, the editorial staff at The Weirs Times was privileged to be the first newspaper in the country to sit down for an interview with Governor Mitt Romney as he kicked off his campaign to be the Republican candidate for President. With the nomination now locked up and his Presidential campaign in full swing, I was asked by the Romney campaign if I would like to be part of the press pool in covering the Governor’s participation in Wolfeboro’s famous Fourth of July parade. I jumped at the chance. Cover-

ing the people and places and history of New Hampshire has always been The Weirs Times’ mission and being able to do a story on Wolfeboro, and New Hampshire’s, most well-known resident, a man who just might get the opportunity to influence our country’s history, appeared to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. There I was on a flatbed truck, riding with reporters and cameramen from the Associated Press, the New York Times and NBC News, to name a few. Bear Expert Ben Kilham At The Loon Center Author and Filmmaker, Benjamin Kilham, will share his unique experiences with black bears on Thursday, July 12th at The Loon Center, 183 Lee’s Mills Road, Moultonborough. at 7:30pm. A resident of Lyme, NH, Kilham has fostered and rehabilitated dozens of bears on his wooded preserve, including an injured cub rescued near The Loon Center. Ben’s approach to rehabilitation has garnered information on black bear behavior that was previously unknown. This program is part of the Loon Preservation Committee, Summer 2012 Nature Talk Series and admission is free, though donations are accepted. 10th Annual Brenda’s Ride with Friends The 10th Annual Brenda’s Ride with Friends: Fighting Cancer One Mile at a Time will take place on Saturday, August 18. Register now Brenda’s Ride starts at 10am sharp from the Weirs Beach Lobster Pound as hundreds of motorcycles depart together for a beautiful ride around Lake Winnipesaukee. The convoy will arrive back at the Lobster Pound early afternoon for a cook-out, raffles, and live sounds of The Tom Dixon Band and AXIS. Proceeds from this great annual event will again be kept local – benefitting the Oncology Department and patients at LRGH. To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Brenda’s Ride, a 2012 Harley Davidson Street Glide will be raffled off. Only 300 tickets are being sold and the winner will be announced at the August 18th Brenda’s Ride event at the Lobster Pound at 4PM. You need not be present to win. Poll, Picks, Presidents ‌ and Jimmy the Greek Back in 1979 I wrote a sports column for the Coos County Democrat c al l e d “Up and Down the River.â€? Occasionally, I made predictions, to establish my bona fides and assert my sports credibility. Before that year’s NFL season began, I predicted who would win all the divisions. Included was a guess that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would finish first. This drew derision, as the Bucs were hapless. They’d only played three seasons and had lost the first 26 games of their first two campaigns. But the Bucs came through, and as the season wound down it looked like all my picks would hit. I figured I’d be the only columnist in the country to pick all the division winners, due largely to Tampa Bay’s surprising showing. And more than just brag about my gridiron acumen, I thought I could parlay my amazing knowledge into becoming a Las Vegas prognosticator so people could pay me big bucks for my exclusive football picks. Unfortunately, San Diego edged out my pick of Denver for the AFC West title, denying me imagined glory. Just as well. I was teaching at a public high school, and the superintendent probably would have looked askance at a Las Vegas picks column. Anyway, there will always be a demand for people who have a sense of future trends - the

Nostradamus Syndrome, if you will. Successful Wall Street forecasters get fabulously rich and buy second homes on Lake Winnipesaukee, right? The late “Jimmy the Greek� Snyder became wealthy and famous because he supposedly had a gift for selecting football winners. CBS-TV Sports gave him a job with the NFL Today from 1976-88 where his job as an analyst was to pick winners, and millions of fans paid him close attention while The Greek made millions of dollars. Sadly for The Greek, Snyder was fired by CBS in 1988 after he made some controversial remarks about why blacks were naturally superior athletes. But interestingly, The Greek first became famous not due to a sports prediction but a political one. Before the 1948 presidential election, Snyder got 17:1 odds on a $10,000 bet that President Truman would be reelected. Like my Tampa Bay pick, Snyder’s choice of Truman was ridiculed. The popularity of our 33rd president, a Democrat, was at a record low and all the smart money was on New York’s Republican Governor, Thomas Dewey. Snyder used sophisticated logic in picking Truman. “Dewey has a mustache,� explained The Greek, whose real name was Dimetrios Georgios Synodinos. “Women don’t trust men with mustaches.� Truman did, in fact, beat Dewey, and The Greek became rich and famous. Now it’s my turn. It’s another presidential election year, and the current conventional wisdom has incumbent President Barack Obama triumphing over Republican challenger Mitt Rom-

New Hampshire Music Festival Kicks Off 60th Season Every Thursday and Friday for six weeks during the summer, you would think you were at Symphony Hall, Washington D.C. or New York City with the ability to attend Symphony Orchestra Concerts right here in the heart of central New Hampshire. Beginning July 12th and running through August 17th, the New Hampshire Music Festival will be performing at the Silver Center for the Arts at Plymouth State University. Global Warming Blameologists Play with Fire

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo .

Independence Day 2012 PURCELLVILLE, Va. -As is our custom, millions of Americans celebrated Independence Day this year with family, friends and neighbors. Here by Oliver North in Purcellville, Syndicated Columnist there was an old-fashioned parade down Main Street, followed by a barbecue, a church service to pray for our nation -- and fireworks. For many here in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia, it was also day five without electricity -- and very hot. The hardships caused by last week’s powerful storms and power outages are real. More than a dozen of our countrymen have died. The oppressive tem-

peratures remind me that nearly halfway around the world, tens of thousands of young Americans are experiencing heat and fireworks of a different kind -- where our country’s enemies are trying to kill them. Afghanistan isn’t the only place with a summer “fighting season.” It turns out that patriotic young Americans have spent many Independence Days fighting for “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” ever since 56 of our Founding Fathers signed “The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America” in Philadelphia 236 years ago. Independence Day 1814 saw one of the few American victories in the War of 1812, at Fort Erie in Canada. The fort was returned to the British in November that year, shortly before the end of the war. -- Good news: The Waldo Canyon fire, which forced 32,000 residents (including our family) to flee, by Michelle Malkin claimed two Syndicated Columnist lives and destroyed 347 homes, is now 100 percent contained. Bad news: Radical environmentalists won’t stop blowing hot air about this year’s infernal season across the West. Al Gore slithered out of the political morgue to bemoan nationwide heat records and pimp his new “Climate Reality Project,” which blames global warming for the wildfire outbreak. NBC meteorologist Doug Kammerer asserted: “If we did not have global warming, we wouldn’t see this.” Agriculture Department Undersecretary Harris Sherman, who oversees the Forest Service, claimed to the Washington Post: “The climate is changing, and these fires are a very strong indicator of that.” And the Associated Press (or rather, the Activist Press) lit the fear-mongering torch with an eco-propaganda piece titled “U.S. summer is what ‘global warming will look like.’” The problem is that the actual conclusions of scientists included in AP’s screed don’t back up the apocalyptic headline. As the reporter acknowledges under that panicky banner: “Scientifically linking individual weather events to climate change takes intensive study, complicated mathematics, computer models and lots of time. Sometimes it isn’t caused by global warming.

Weather is always variable; freak things happen.” So, this U.S. summer may or may not really look like “what global warming looks like.” Kinda. Sorta. Possibly. Possibly not. Furthermore, the AP reporter concedes, the “global” nature of the warming and its supposed catastrophic events have “been local. Europe, Asia and Africa aren’t having similar disasters now, although they’ve had their own extreme events in recent years.” A more hedging headline would have been journalistically responsible, but Chicken Little-ism better serves the global warming blame-ologists’ agenda. More inconvenient truths: As The Washington Times noted this week, the National Climatic Data Center shows that “Colorado has actually seen its average temperature drop slightly from 1998 to 2011, when data is collected only from rural stations and not those that have been urbanized since 1900.” Radical green efforts to block logging and timber sales in national forests since the 1990s are the real culprits. Wildlife mitigation experts point to incompetent forest management and militant opposition to thinning the timber fuel supply. Another symptom of green obstructionism: widespread bark beetle infestations. The U.S. Forest Service itself reported last year: “During the last part of the 20th century, widespread treatments in lodgepole pine stands that would have created age class diversity, enhanced the vigor of remaining trees, and improved stand resiliency to drought or insect attack -- such as timber harvest and thinning -- lacked

The “Taliban” of Timbuktu warned “Such attacks against cultural heritage sites are totally unjustified.” But beyond the cultural damages, the political fallout from the widening crisis has seen over 320,000 people flee their homes since the military coup de etat in March. Now the north of Mali, the size of France, could host a radical Islamic Emirate. Following the disarray of the central government, both Tuareg

rebels and Islamic jihadi warriors briefly joined forces. Most Tuareg sought an independent but secular state. Yet the Al-Qaida linked Ansar Dine movement stress radical Islam. This group has imposed Islamic Sharria Law and calls ancient Muslim shrines sacrilegious. Prof Abdelmajid Charfi, a Tunisian scholar, warns that “In Mali Ansar Dine is under the direct

Teaching Economics Having taught economics at a number of colleges for a number of years, I especially welcomed a feature article in the June 22nd issue of The by Thomas Sowell Chronicle of Syndicated Columnist Higher Education, on how economics courses with the same name can be very different at different colleges. It can also be very different when the course is taught by professors in the same department who have different approaches. The usefulness of the three approaches described in the article depends on what the introductory course is trying to accomplish. One professor taught the subject through a steady diet of mathematical models. If the introductory economics course is aimed at those students who are going to major in economics, then that may make some sense. But most students in most introductory economics courses are not going to become economics majors, much less professional economists. Among those students for whom a one-year introductory course is likely to be their only exposure to economics, mathematical models that they will probably never use in later life, as they try to understand economic activities and policies in the real world, may be of very limited value to them, if any value at all.

If the purpose of the introductory course is to serve as a recruiting source for economics majors, that serves the interest of the economics department, not the students. It may also serve the interests of the professor, because teaching in the fashion familiar in his own research and scholarship is a lot easier than trying to recast economics in terms more accessible to students who are studying the subject for the first time. Having written two textbooks on introductory economics -one full of graphs and equations, and the other with neither -- I know from experience that the second way is a lot harder to write, and is more time-consuming. The first book was written in a year; the second took a decade. The first book quickly went out of print. The second book (“Basic Economics”) has gone through 4 editions and has been translated into 6 foreign languages. Both books taught the same principles, but obviously one approach did so more successfully than the other. The same applies in the classroom. The opposite extreme from teaching economics with mathematical models was described by a professor who uses an approach she characterized as democratizing the classroom, “so that everybody is a co-teacher and co-learner.” This has sometimes been called “discovery learning,” where the students discover the underlying principles for themselves while groping their way through problems. Irina Bokova, Director of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) stated her dismay over the destruction of three sacred tombs which are part of the World Heritage List. “Reports that Mausoleums have been destroyed is extremely distressing,” she warned, “there is no justification for such wanton destruction.” “It’s paradoxical and incomprehensible” Prof. Jean-Michel Djian quoted in Le Figaro, “If they do it is because they have no culture, its a form of gratuitous violence,” where a movement wishes to destroy such significant historic monuments. According to Paris-based UNESCO, Timbuktu was an intellectual and spiritual center as early as the 15th and 16th centuries as well as a hub of the trans-Saharan trade. But the ancient city of Timbuktu, lost in the remote reaches of the Sahara has sadly been thrust into the headlines as an Islamic fundamentalist group has been destroying historic and religious sites to the shock of the world. Ironically these sites include Muslim tombs and mosques which are part of another sect of Islam. Long the crossroads of caravan trade commerce and religious learning dating to the 13th century, Timbuktu sits on the parched edge of the Sahara and West Africa. Part of the landlocked state of Mali, Timbuktu has been a center of lore and legend since French explorers put the place into contemporary consciousness. Given that Mali is victim of ethnic and religious violence, the northern part of the country has fallen under the control of a number of separatist and Islamic factions who not only oppose the central government in far off Bamako, but have tried to establish an independent state Azawad. Mali’s recent troubles are rooted in the disintegration of Libya; many of the Tuareg tribesmen who served Gaddafi as mercenar-

To The Editor: Operation Fast and Furious was a Federal government operation in which Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) agents instructed US gun dealers to sell guns to straw men who then sold the guns to Mexican drug cartels. The stated goal was to track the guns to be able to take down high profile Mexican drug cartels. However in many cases no tracking devices were even put on the guns. The result was that over 2500 US guns were lost track of and ended up in the hands of violent Mexican drug cartels which resulted in the deaths of over 300 Mexicans as well as US Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry. The Mexican government had no knowledge of Operation Fast and Furious. Obama supporters may point out

that from 2006-2007 the Justice Department under George W. Bush ran a gun-walking program called “Wide Receiver� where guns were also sold to Mexican cartels. However several major differences exist between the two programs. During Wide Receiver, GPS devices were placed on all guns in an attempt to setup sting operations on Mexican cartels. Wide Receiver had the full cooperation of the Mexican government. When Mexican drug-lords figured out how to disable the tracking devices to result in about 250 guns being lost track of the program was immediately discontinued. William Newell of the ATF vowed that such a botched program would happen “never again.� How could the Federal government under Obama be so incompetent when they had glaring evidence of how this type of gun-walking operation would be a dismal failure? While Operation Wide Receiver truly was a botched sting operation quite the contrary is true for Operation Fast and Furious. I believe Fast and Furious was a deliberate attempt to hype the supposed dangers of gun sales and push public opinion into renewing Bill Clinton’s assaultweapons ban and other gun-control measures. Article 10 To The Editor: New Hampshire had it right when in June 2, 1774, this state ratified its constitution which included Article 10 “The Right of Revolution.� “Government being instituted for the common benefit, protection and security of the whole community, and not for the private interest or emolument of any one man, family, or class of men; therefore whenever the ends of government are perverted, and public liberty manifestly endangered, and all other means of redress are ineffectual, the people may and of right ought to reform the old, or establish a new government. The report begins with reference to an opinion letter from another writer in The Springfield (Missouri) News-Leader. That writer was “in the newspaper justifying Christians’ rights to refuse to vote for Romney because he is a Mormon�. Jane Pitt is not a Mormon and differs, as many do, with the Mormon religion. THR continues to quote Jane Pitt: “any Christian should spend much time in prayer before refusing to vote for a family man with high morals, business experience, who is against abortion, and shares Christian conviction concerning homosexuality just because he is a Mormon.� AND, “any Christian who does not vote or writes in a name is casting a vote for Romney’s opponent, Barack Hussein Obama — a

saw it as being part of New Hampshire history. It was apparent that Romney was putting Wolfeboro, Lake Winnipesaukee and New Hampshire on the map. There was a buzz before the parade and it blossomed into what, some who have been to the Wolfeboro Fourth of July Parade before say, was the biggest crowd in years. Of course, the weather was beautiful and it was a perfect day for a parade, but one can’t discount the effect that Romney’s presence had on the size of the crowd. I heard that there were claims that the Romney camp had bussed in hundreds of people to watch

the parade. It seems those kinds of stories always pop up when a candidate makes a campaign stop. I’d have to say, after having had the opportunity to survey the entire crowd along the parade route, that seemed far fetched. Sure, there were a couple of small organized groups for, and against, the Governor, that’s politics, everyone does it. But overall, the majority of supporters who were there appeared, to me, to be just average people who made the trip to watch the parade, show their support and maybe get a chance to shake hands with the candidate. by the candidate himself as we were out on the main parade route. It ran about a mile and a half and ended up on front of the Brewster Academy Field. The parade ran for about an hour and a half, I was hot and sweaty about halfway through, and I was just standing there, keeping my balance as the flatbed lurched forward; I

couldn’t imagine how the governor felt as he walked the entire route. Along the way he made the effort to shake as many hands, and pose for as many pictures as possible, quickly jogging from one side of the street to the other along the entire route. That would have been more than a workout for me. Watching the governor on this mini-marathon, keep-

ing cool the best he could with a towel here and there and a quick drink of water, I was suddenly feeling fortunate to be on the truck only worrying about keeping my balance. Later, in his brief speech at Brewster Academy field, he made mention how polite and civil everyone was and how some from the other camp even wished him good luck and a Happy Fourth of July. I’d have to say that Romney was the hardest working man in Wolfeboro that day. The parade route finishes with a hearty incline. It was, as noted, a beautiful day, still the sun was relentless and the

humidity was creeping in. At the end of the route, the Governor finished up by buying a lemonade from a homemade stand manned by a a young Wolfeboro entrepreneur. It made a great photo op but I missed out as the rest of the press crew was off the truck and upon the scene like flies on honey. I was left in the dust, a rookie mistake. We got back on the flatbed for a short trip to the Brewster Academy field where the press was given access to a private viewing area to take photos and video. We waited, along See romney on 17

All around we are surrounded by people we love.” The Governor then thanked the people of Wolfeboro and called it “A little corner of paradise.” In this humble reporter’s opinion, Mitt Romney’s participation in the Wolfeboro Fourth of July Parade was more than just another stop in the many campaign stops that he will be making over the next months. It appeared to me to be more of a guy, who just happened to be running for President, getting to know his neighbors. The large crowd also got me to wondering how many people came to Wolfeboro that day because of Mitt Romney. Maybe it’s the capitalist in me but I can only imagine that a few of the local shops had a very good day. Who knows what will happen in November, but if Mitt Romney gets elected, it just might be the best thing that has happened to New Hampshire in a long time. As for me, I had a lot of fun. Still. I’m not sure I’m ready for covering the national scene. There’s too much travelling for my blood. I like it right where I am and feel privileged to live here as well.

It was then the bloodiest place on earth and unbearably hot -- but not much different in temperature, tactics or troops from what we have documented during other sweltering summers over the past decade in Afghanistan, Colombia, the Philippines and elsewhere in Mesopotamia. All of these places and events are a powerful reminder of who we are and why we fight. We don’t deploy our sons and daughters around the world and place them in harm’s way for gold or oil or colonial conquest. Americans place themselves at great risk for an idea: freedom. This year, I didn’t go off to cover a war in some faroff place. Instead, I was invited to read the Declaration of Independence -- all 1,337 words -- at a

On Independence Day 1863, Americans learned that more than 50,000 of our countrymen had been killed and wounded in the previous three days of battle at Gettysburg. By nightfall of July 4, Gen. Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia were retreating south in the Shenandoah Valley, and Gen. Ulysses S. Grant was accepting the surrender of Confederate troops at Vicksburg. On July 4, 1917, the first wave of American “doughboys” were “moving to the sound of the guns,” having arrived in France a day earlier. By the time World War I ended in November 1918, more than 115,000 Americans were dead. During World War II, the time around the Fourth of July was pivotal to Allied victory in both Europe and the Pacific. For the American troops who landed at Normandy less than a month earlier, Independence Day 1944 was marked by furious fighting in the hedgerows. The next year, Independence Day in the Pacific was celebrated with the liberation of Okinawa -and massive air raids by American B-29s on the Japanese home islands. The League of NH Craftsmen Meredith Retail Gallery is hosting a special summertime craft exhibition during the month of July called Under the Sea. This is a fantastical collection of sea life, big and small in a variety of mediums made by juried members of the League of NH Craftsmen. The exhibition starts on July 1 and will be on display for the entire month. All displayed craft are also available for purchase. Visitors will see colorful, creative interpretations of ocean life, including underwater plants and creatures such as an octopus, starfish --even mermaids. Summer Arts Celebrates 39 Years of Creativity

This year marks the 39th Season of creativity at the Frates Creative Arts Center with Studio Art Classes for children, teens, and adults, Magic Classes for children and teens, as well as the Lakes Region’s original Children’s Theater Workshop. Registration is now open and will continue over the summer. The exciting “summer programs” has morning Studio Art classes for children 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, and teens. All of these groups will explore a variety of drawing and painting mediums revolving around personal themes. Each day will challenge the young artists to explore and especially to have FUN in the process. Afternoons will inspire youngsters to apply their creative skills to the new MAGIC classes. Each day will bring the world of magic alive with learning, practicing, and even performing for family and friends. This idea is a repeat workshop following a successful June workshop that produced 10 novice magicians ready to

become members of the National Society of Young Magicians. Children and teens who complete the workshop are invited to join the National organization through the Society of American Magicians through the affiliation that Frates has had with society, as a member of the Order of Merlin Shield. Afternoons in August bring more art classes for youngsters ages 4-teens during the week of August 13-17 and the morning tradition of the Lakes Region’s Children’s Theater

take a very long time -- much longer than a course lasts. It took the leading classical economists a hundred years of wrestling with different concepts of supply and demand -- often misunderstanding each other -- before finally arriving at mutually understood concepts that can now be taught to students in the first week of introductory economics. The Chronicle of Higher Education reported that the discovery learning professor sometimes seemed to be the one doing most of the work in the class, “bringing the students’ sometimes fumbling answers back to economic principles.” This course’s main focus is said to be not on mastering

the principles of economics, but being able to “dialog” and discuss “shades of gray.” With such mushy goals and criteria, hard evidence is unlikely to rear its ugly head and spoil the pretty vision of discovery learning. Discovery learning may not serve the interests of the students, but it may well serve the ego of its advocate. Education may be the only field of human endeavor where experiments always seem to succeed -- as judged by their advocates. By contrast, the third method of teaching introductory economics, in lectures by Professor Donald Boudreaux of George Mason University, tests the students with objective questions -- which means that

it is also producing a test of whether this traditional way of teaching actually works. Apparently it does. The Chronicle of Higher Education also reported on the students. The feckless behavior of today’s students in all three courses makes me glad that I left the classroom long ago, and do my teaching today solely through my writings. In his 10-year career Ryan Montbleau and his limber band have built their catalog the old-fashioned way, by introducing new songs to their live set, then bending and shaping them over dozens of performances before committing a definitive version to the hard drive. The singer and songwriter first eased his way into the city when he was invited to contribute songs to Backatown, the breakthrough album of favorite son Trombone Shorty. That went so well, Montbleau co-wrote two more songs for Shorty’s recent follow-up, “For True.” When the crowds are dancing, the band digs deeper in the pocket. But Montbleau, who still performs solo, is constantly looking to strike a balance between the contagious energy of moving bodies and making a closer connection.
