Bobby Arnold, the grandson of Fritzie Baer is working on a book about his grandfather. What follows is excerpted from the first chapter of this work that is still in progress. Bob has fond memories of growing up around Fritzie and he is still searching for others who have had association with him between 195059. Bobby welcomes any information by email at barnold51@aol.com or by phone at 603-997-2931. Looking back, it was serendipity that brought Fritzie Baer and Laconia together, beginning a relationship that would last for over 25 years. In 1938, Fritzie Baer was the president of the New England Motorcycle Dealers Association and also ran the dealership at the Indian Motocycle Factory, affectionately known as ‘The Wigwam’, in Springfield MA. The 1930’s also saw the start of Class C motorcycle racing. Class C motorcycle racing became one of the primary advertising tools used in the selling of motorcycles and attracted crowds in the thousands to both local and national events. Technically, the motorcycles used in these races had to be models that the public could also purchase. “Win on Sunday. Buy on Monday” was an oft used phrase among these dealers. In the 1930’s, this was a battle for market share

He started a motorcycle club, ‘Fritzie’s Roamers’, which boasted some very prominent racers as members. They held races throughout New England and provided sponsorship in various ways, such as this medal given to the racers entered at Keene in 1936. Fritzie was very active with the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA). In 1931, at age 30, he was appointed District Referee for Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In 1932, he was appointed New England District Referee. Fritzie was well liked and respected by the motorcycle racing fraternity. The Motorcycle Digest of June 1933 said: “Fritzie Baer of Worcester was referee for the day and that meant that races were pulled off in quick succession and that the crowd was kept well-informed with what was going on via the megaphone and Fritzie’s leather-like lungs.” The November 1937 issue of ‘The Motorcyclist’, which was the official publication of the AMA, has an

Fritzie and Louise Baer taken in 1939 just a year after the first race at the Belknap Mountain Recreation Area in 1938. article on the New England Night Speedway Championship. Here’s what they had to say about Fritzie: “Fritzie Baer, a New England land-mark for lo these many years, handled the starting flags and did the best job of his career…..” Fritzie was “A New England land-mark” at 36 years old and his 25 year love affair with Laconia and The Area was ready to begin. The Beginning of Laconia 1938 was the first year for the National Championship to be held at the Belknap Mountains Rec-
reation Area in Gilford, NH. The New England Motorcycle Dealers Association (NEMDA) had been sponsoring a 200 Mile TT race, held in Keene NH in 1935-1936 and Old Orchard Beach ME in 1937. Although popular races, both locations had drawbacks and general disapproval by the local citizens with the influx of cycles The races known simply as ‘Laconia’ will become one of the most prominent and exciting motorcycle races in the United States for the next 25 years. ernment had created the Works Progress Administration in 1935 to provide jobs during the Depression and one of their projects was the building of the Belknap Mountains Recreation Area (locally known as “The Area”) in 1936. While the Federal Government provided the funds to build The Area, the facility was now owned by the Belknap County. In order to maintain the facility, there needed to be sources of revenue. One source was to be skiing but this revenue only happened during the 3-4 winter months in New Hampshire. John Zimmerman, an Indian motorcycle dealer who lived in Keene and the current president of the NEMDA, was traveling through the Lakes Region in 1937 and visited the newly opened, $500,000 Belknap Mountains Recreation Area. He could easily envision a TT race through the dirt roads that criss-crossed throughout the camp grounds and just below the new winter ski jumps. Straight-aways and hair-
pin corners on a course of dirt roads throughout the woods would make for a very exciting race. The Lake Winnipesaukee region would also be a very attractive venue to draw the crowds that would pay to see the riders challenge each other for a purse equal to a month’s wages by the average worker Incoming NEMDA president, Fritzie Baer, accompanied John to check out The Area as a competition venue. With the help of Edward Lydiard, a Laconia city commissioner, they convinced the Belknap County Commissioners of the economic benefits to both The Area and the entire Lakes Region in allowing them to use the facilities for a 200 Mile National T.T. Championship race the following September. The 1938 Laconia Races The NEMDA was the organizer of the National Championship for one major reason. Races helped them to sell motorcycles. Fritzie Baer was very active in motorcycle rac-
ing. Early in his career, he was a motorcycle hill climber and then became both an announcer and race official, working races throughout the United States. Fritzie loved motorcycles and the men and women that rode them. He founded a motorcycle club, Fritzie’s Roamers, which sponsored regular races and had many very prominent racers as their members, among them the Castonguay brothers, Woodsie and Frenchy, and later Fritzie’s racing sons, Bobby and Butch. Fritzie was a great friend of the racers and they knew that any race that he was associated with would be a well run and fair competition. In fact, for the next 25 years, Laconia became known among the racing fraternity as very safe race, with only one rider becoming a fatality during those years. Fritzie also knew the power of the press and regularly wrote and submitted press releases to the local media. Harley-Davidson’s BenSee baer on 4

ny Campanale was phenomenal racer who would be the only other racer along with the winner, Ed Kretz, to complete all 181 laps (4 hours and 41 minutes) of the initial 200 Mile National Championship, at the new Laconia TT track. After 1938, Laconia will became a 100 mile race. The early Class C racers were very tough men and Benny was one of the toughest. There is a story of Benny competing at his first Daytona 200 in 1938 and being driven off of the track by another rider, Lester Hillbish, who also raced in that inaugural 1938 race at Laconia. Benny immediately remounts and upon coming along side Hillbish, begins kicking his front wheel to return the favor. “I was going to let him

Benny won the race with Hillbish coming in second. The next year Campanale returned, but he was no longer the underdog. This time he was given a factory Harley-Davidson as his motor. Benny’s last race at Laconia was in 1950. Twenty-One racers would start the 200 Mile National Championship race that September day in 1938. The numbers were determined by how they quali-
fied for the race and were attached over their regular numbers. Only two men would complete the 181 laps in the inaugural Laconia race that day. The winner Ed Kretz IND #2 and Benny Campanale H-D #4, though Benny was over a lap behind. They would wrestle their motors around the dirt course for 4 hours and 41 minutes. All other riders were then flagged in and did not have to complete all 200 miles. Newspaper accounts of this race always speak about having to pry Ed’s hands off of the See baer on 5

This would be the first of Babe’s 10 races at Laconia where he would finish with 1 first, 2 seconds, a third and a fifth. In six of those 10 races, he would also finish all 100 laps! In the 1938 race, only 1 rider was injured and that was Babe, who was treated at Laconia Hospital for a head injury following a crash through a temporary fence. His fender had fallen off and locked up his front wheel. While dead serious on the race course, there was a strong off the track camaraderie among the Harley-Davidson and Indian camps. My Mom, nicknamed ‘Sis’ often told me that Babe was one of her favorite riders while a young girl traveling to races with her father Fritzie and racer brothers, Bobby and Butch. She loved getting their autographs.
