Life in Gilford With Three Macaws

They peel off strips of wallpaper, chew the edge of the kitchen table, and hurl houseplants to the floor when they’re angry. They bite and scratch.

They also cuddle and kiss - and happen to be experts at imitating human voices. To bird lover Judy Ellis of Gilford, parrots can be the most endearing companions, surpassing dogs in their loyalty and ability

to show affection - albeit in some unusual ways. How many pets throw up on your shoulder in order to prove that they can take care of you? Or fly into the clothes dryer to build you a nest? Or dance and See baker on 11

The Weirs Times is proud to endorse Mitt Romney for President of the United States. Four years ago many residents of New Hampshire decided to take a new path, a road which was unsure but was promised to lead to “Hope and Change” for America. Four years later, many are still hoping and not much has changed and what has, has been for the worse. In 2008, President Obama took the wheel and, working with an overwhelming democratic majority in the House and Senate his first two years, focused on what he felt were the two most important pieces of legislation to move us forward: a massive stimulus spending bill and Obamacare. The stimulus, with a promise of lowering unemployment to near five percent, proved ineffective as the economy continues to stagnate and unemployment lingers at eight percent. (Much higher if you count those who have stopped looking for work.) Obamacare, which won’t be fully implemented until after this election, has brought uncertainty in hiring new employees by our country’s largest employers: small business. Many are questioning whether they will be able to keep their current employee levels. In the meantime, the government has continued to create massive deficits and a debt that is about to change the fabric of a strong America and affect generations to come. The road many confidently set out upon has become mired in so many fiscal potholes that even a mountain of shovel ready jobs won’t help. This election we will be at another crossroads. We can choose to continue travelling down this path or take a new road. To turn from a man who simply had untested ideas how to fix our economic mess, to a man who has spent most of his life actually fixing such messes, with great success. Governor Romney has laid out a comprehensive plan to move our economy forward. His record of achieving success with See romney on 22

As Predicted by Peter Grasso Contributing Writer

Earlier in the year I had predicted that with the early (March) ice out, fishing would be a whole lot different this year. In fact, I really thought that it would be pretty much like the 2010 season, where we also had an early ice out. If you remember, in 2010 we had great spring fishing only to find that by the time that September got here any time on the water was pretty much a waste of time and fuel as the fish pretty much totally stopped hitting. Well, 2012 was pretty much a cookie cutter example of the same;

GREAT CATCH.

Here we have three generations enjoying a GREAT day of fishing aboard the “Dr. Hook.” at least as far as I can tell (that’s another story for later). The first few days of the 2012 season were really “Gangbusters” with almost every charter limiting out with some really great fish. Then, as par for the course, things began to settle down a bit. We still caught a lot of

fish, but not 6 – 8 in the first hour like the beginning. Everything pretty much held up throughout the season with August actually being the best month of all. I think that we were on the water 14 of the first 16 days of the month and almost every day the client took home a limit of fish, if that was their desire. Many practiced “Catch and Release.” However, my boat rule is - and this is stated at the start of the trip; “If we catch a legal fish and it is hook See grasso on 24

One of the most remarkable features of the publication was a map of Lake Winnipesaukee which occupied the center spread of the paper. Loud and Clear

To The Editor: Like most folks, our phone has been infected with the political telephone virus. My wife just had a hip implant and we have had need for many calls, in and out, in reference to her recovery. I have given up trying to dissuade these pathetic callers and now just hang up on them. Prior to the surgery we just did not answer the phone. We let the answering machine do what it does best, and returned the real calls. I call them pathetic callers because they, like the minions that wave signs and pass out cards at the polling places, seem to think that will change ones vote. There are two major types of voters - those that follow what is going on in the country and the world - and those that live by sound bytes and their “fondle slab”. They don’t bother to seek multiple sources of information. Their vote can not be changed because they have been indoctrinated by one of the religions - Green Energy - Global Warming AARP - Tax the Wealthy - or Free Stuff. Both types know how they are going to vote when they arrive, and I am ashamed to say that New Hampshire now has about an even split. So I would suggest to the sign wavers - stay home and stay warm. My answer to the phone calls is to develop a new feature to be offered by the phone company - CALLER DESTRUCT.

To The Editor: Some may suggest that NH Democrats didn’t get out their message well in 2010, that this was the reason for the Republican landslide in NH. But they did get their message out, Loud and Clear: They overestimated revenues by a long shot, despite many cries of protest, then spent like there was no tomorrow. Then the Governor raided Dept. Rainy Day Funds, then the Legislature increased taxes: $30 million business-killing LLC Tax, $75 million Vehicle Registration Surcharge, and $156 million loan to “balance” the budget. They had majorities in both House and Senate, and the Governor’s chair. They couldn’t say “No!” Voters, including a lot of Democrats, are sick and tired of Fiscal Liberals, and have not forgotten how the previous Legislature took advantage of all of us. There are no Fiscal Conservatives among the NH House or Senate Democrats, AFP-NH says. Message remembered, Loud and Clear: Vote out Fiscal Liberals. Vote Republican.

Benghazi, Libya raise some frightening questions. First, why did a team of at least three CIA operatives have to disobey orders to try to help Ambassador Stevens in the US consulate after being told to “stand down”? Secondly, why was the CIA operatives request for additional support denied? This is despite the fact that Special Forces operators were just over a two hour flight away in Sicily. The entire battle lasted approximately seven hours. In addition, it has been reported that a military surveillance drone was in position in Benghazi that was capable of sending real time visuals that could be viewed in the White House Situation room, State Department, the CIA, and the Pentagon. Finally, how could the President not have been aware of the distress calls for help? Obama claims that he is still trying to find out exactly what happened. However, the CIA has stated that they did not give any orders to stand down. Either someone in the administration made these decisions without notifying Obama or it was Obama himself who decided it wasn’t worth trying to save the lives of Americans. Remember this is the same President who took all the credit for the killing of Osama Bin Laden as if he actually pulled the trigger himself. In that same regard it’s time for President Obama to fire those who failed to make him aware in time during the Benghazi attack or to take full responsibility for his actions. The American people and the family of those who lost their lives deserve to know the truth. Brett Collopy Farmington, NH

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

It’s that time of year again when everything changes and we fall into that seasonal sadness. Of course, I am talking about election day and all that comes with it. I hear a lot of talk about how many people can’t wait until it is here; until all that has been leading up to it is over. But, as always happens, it comes, it goes and suddenly there is a large void to fill in our lives. It’s been months and months and, to some who have been following since the primaries, a little over a year since it has been in our lives. There’s been the potential candidates appearing at the local bean hole bean dinners and Chamber of Commerce luncheons, the slew of ads on TV and radio and, more recently, a barrage of phone calls, yard signs and people jumping up and down at traffic intersections yelling and screaming someone’s name –usually a candidate’s. The list goes on. But, soon it will all be gone and you claim you are more than ready. But are you really? I can imagine that there have been psychological tests done that prove that the sudden absence of political hoopla on a daily basis can suddenly bring a strange post depression. I can

The biggest thing that is missed when the election is over is the ads. But that doesn’t need to stop you from changing your habits. There will still be plenty of ads on TV to react to. I like to use drug ads to get my fix of the negative campaigning feel. They always start off explaining the things they said they will accomplish then‌.BOOM‌in comes the “could cause headaches, heart attacks, liver problems, donkey nose, exploding ear and, in some cases, deathâ€? to turn me completely off from even thinking about trying it. Now that I think about it, maybe this is where the ideas for political ideas came from in the first place. If you’re like me you are a six-foot-two bald guy‌ or you like to save up all of those oversized political mailers you get during the campaign season. I find these come in handy once the election is over to be used as drink coasters when family or friends come and, hopefully, start some heated political discussions where friendships are shattered and families are divided. I always miss that after an election is over. So, as you see, there are a few options to keep away PEB. There is hope to get you through the next few months when the 2016 candidates start coming to town. Brendan Smith welcomes your comments at brendan@weirs.com. You can also follow him on Twitter at @weirsbrendan.

Chasing The Blues also imagine that the people who run these tests are voting for the candidate who promises bigger government since that would guarantee they would continue to get funding to do silly psychological tests like these. All of this aside, I am here this week as a public service to give you a few ideas to help you survive what I call PEB “Post Election Blues. (I was trying to think of a better acronym but deadline was approaching.) Research has found, and again I am guessing here, that the most prominent thing that people find themselves missing after an election is polls. As I have said on these pages before, there are hundreds of polls out there during an election year and if you look around you can always find one that matches the way you think to make you feel better. I suggest doing polls at home. For example. List two or three choice for Friday dinner on Monday morning and then call members of your household on their cell phones explaining you are from “The Americans For Dinner Choices and asking them some questions. First: Are you planning to eat dinner on Friday night and, if so, which of these meals would you prefer or are you undecided. Then post the results on Monday evening and then let other members of the household campaign for their choices. Repeat these calls every day until dinner on Friday. If undecided comes out on top, then the family goes out to eat (but don’t let them know this option beforehand).

It Is Up To The Independents

Strong Candidates To Lead New Hampshire The Weirs Times endorses Ovide Lamontagne for Governor, Frank Guinta and Charlie Bass for Congress as well as Jeanie Forrester and Josh Youssef for the NH Senate. In 2008, Democrats swept to power across the country on the coattail of Barack Obama’s fairy tale of “Hope and Change.” On the national level, in states across the country and here in New Hampshire, people were suddenly force fed a diet of new and higher taxes, programs and regulations that shackled small business in their attempt to grow or even survive. In 2010, voters here in New Hampshire and across the country responded in force and, in one of the most sweeping elections in history, replaced many of those who had taken power only two years before. Governor - Ovide Lamontagne Over the past two years, the New Hampshire legislature has worked hard in eliminating business inhibiting taxes and regulations and trying to give New Hampshire a friendlier business environment and bringing us back from the disasters of the previous two years. There have been successes but many of these bills were vetoed by Governor Lynch. Democratic candidate for Governor, Maggie Hassan was a proud and major player in the 2008-10 “tax and spend” New Hampshire legislature which created such burdens on families as the motor vehicle registration tax which was later repealed. She also fought for passage of the job killing LLC small business income tax. As Governor she would be ready to do the same. The voters of New Hampshire have already overwhelmingly rejected her ideas in 2010. Why would we return? We trust Ovide Lamontagne to be the fiscally responsible Governor we need in these tenuous economic

times. His insistence on zero-based budgeting for all government departments, ideas for pension reform and helping reel in the high cost of energy here in New Hampshire, are all just parts of a sound economic policy for the state. He also opposes a state income or sales tax. Our unemployment rate is lower than most of the country, still, it has inched up over the last months. Let’s keep that in check by doing what is right to keep businesses here and flourishing; elect Ovide Lamontagne. Congress Dist. 1 - Frank Guinta Congress Dist. 2 - Charles Bass Both Frank Guinta and Charlie Bass were elected to US Congress in 2010 as part of the country’s revolt against big spending Washington. In the past two years they have worked hard against President Obama’s disregard for the will of the people and his continued insistence on huge government. This election they are running against the same opponents they defeated in 2010 who have brought nothing new to the table. Regardless of who wins the presidency, we need to keep both Guinta and Bass in Washington to keep an eye on our interests. NH Senate Dist. 2 - Jeanie Forrester Jeanie Forrester in NH Senate District 2 has done an exemplary job in her first term and has proved her commitment to a prosperous New Hampshire in her voting record and should be reelected. NH Senate Dist. 7 - Josh Youssef

Josh Youssef is running for NH State Senate in District 7, to fill the seat vacated by Jim Forsythe. Jim did an excellent job in keeping our state’s spending in check and their hands off of our money. We are confident that Josh will fill those shoes nicely.

by David Scott Dover, NH.

Independent New Hampshire voters are 39% of those registered. Our next president may well be chosen by them. The presidency may be decided by New Hampshire’s four elector-

al votes. When I ask my wife whether we are better off now than four years ago, her answer is our income is down and our expenses are up. Our personal expenses for gasoline and heating oil are $3,000 higher; and our food bill $1,500 higher. Our health care insurance is about to increase by some unknown number. We are much worse off than 4 years ago. We can all see Mr. Obama’s policies did not improve things at all. In 4 years he has increased the national debt by a number only an astronomer can understand. Each of our four grandchildren will have to shoulder an estimated $100,000 of it. The question many Independent voters are asking is, “what added debt will our grandchildren have if we reelect Barack Obama?” Ask yourselves: Has Mr. Obama improved our economic situation or has he made it worse? Has his energy policy led to lower or higher gasoline prices? Gasoline was $1.80 a gallon when he took office. It is now twice that amount.

The cost of energy has a substantial impact on the cost of food and our food bill which is now much more than 4 years ago. These increases can be directly traced to Mr. Obama’s energy policy. He blocked the Keystone pipeline and reduced the number of oil leases on government owned lands by 30%. He has reduced the number of ocean drilling permits by 40%. What is more disturbing to me is that he is not aware of these statistics compiled by a government agency that reports to him. If he doesn’t have these important figures in broad strokes at his fingertips how can he be an effective CEO of the largest government enterprise in the world? New Hampshire Independent voters recognize that Mr. Obama does not understand how our private sector economy works. They recognize that Mr Obama does not understand what policies are needed to stop the increase of government red ink. And New Hampshire Independent voters recognize that Mr. Obama does not understand what policies are needed to stimulate private investment to create new jobs in the private sector. Governor Romney understands all of this. Independents know that being a skilled orator is not enough. Mr Obama is over his head in the job of President and it’s time to let him go. Independent voters can help insure a victory for Republican Romney. It will be the independent voters gift to their grandchildren.

What About the Camp Bastion Attack?

Three days after the bloody 9/11 siege on our consulate in Benghazi, the Taliban waged an intricately coordinated, by Michelle Malkin brutal attack Syndicated Columnist on Camp Bastion in Afghanistan. The murderous jihadists released video exactly one month ago this week showing off their training exercises in preparation for the assault. Where are the questions? Where’s the accountability? Where’s the Obama administration? Where’s the press? Where’s the outrage? Two heroic U.S. Marines were killed in the battle. Their names -- Lt. Col. Christopher Raible and Sgt. Bradley Atwell -- have

not been uttered publicly by the commander in chief. Their arrival back in the U.S., in flag-draped coffins, was not broadcast on network TV. But their brothers-in-arms did not and will not forget. And neither must we. On September 20, John Gresham of the Defense Media Network wrote a scathing detailed breakdown of this little-noticed terrorist attack on our troops. He called it “arguably the worst day in USMC aviation history since the Tet Offensive of 1968.” Eight irreplaceable aircraft were destroyed or put out of action by Taliban warriors dressed in U.S. combat fatigues -- amounting to “approximately 7 percent of the total flying USMC Harrier fleet,” Gresham reported. His summary is bone chilling: “A Harrier squadron commander is dead, along with another

Then And Now WASHINGTON -For better than a month, the Obama administration has been dodging and weaving over what actually transpired in Benghazi, by Oliver North Libya, on the Syndicated Columnist night of Sept. 11-12. Questions have been posed about why Ambassador Christopher Stevens was there and not at his embassy post in Tripoli. Congressional investigators have asked why he had no security detail, why the State Department decided not to send in U.S. Marine embassy security guards when they were offered months before, why contingency plans were not in place on the anniversary of 9/11 and why the O-Team insisted for so long that the attack on our U.S. diplomatic post was a “spontaneous event” and not an act of terrorism. By now, all should realize that truthful answers to these inquiries will not be furnished by the White House or State Department until after the presidential election on Nov. 6. But there is

an even more important question that should be asked and answered now: Once the White House knew about the attack in Benghazi, what action did the president take to protect or save the lives of Americans? “We the People” need to know the answer because we are about to hire -- or rehire -- a commander in chief. The response is crucial to determining whether the incumbent is competent enough to fulfill the responsibilities of the job or whether he should be replaced. Fortunately, we have a standard of behavior for a commander in chief in a previous well-documented terror event: Ronald Reagan during the Achille Lauro incident. On Oct. 7, 1985, four radical Islamic terrorists -- members of the Palestine Liberation Front, the organization now calling itself Hamas -- hijacked the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro. They then murdered Leon Klinghoffer, a wheelchair-bound American passenger. His only offense was that he was an American citizen and a Jew. That was offense enough to spark what the current administration might well call a See north on 26

Marine. Another nine personnel have been wounded, and the nearby Marines at Camp Freedom are now without effective fixed-wing air support. The USMC’s response to this disas-

ter will be a telling report card on its leadership and organizational agility.” On September 21, the leftleaning magazine The Atlantic See malkin on 20

Libya and Lies It was a little much when President Barack Obama said that he was “offended” by the suggestion that his administration would try to by Thomas Sowell d e c e i v e t h e Syndicated Columnist public about what happened in Benghazi. What has this man not deceived the public about? Remember his pledge to cut the deficit in half in his first term in office? This was followed by the first trillion dollar deficit ever, under any President of the United States -- followed by trillion dollar deficits in every year of the Obama administration. Remember his pledge to have a “transparent” government that would post its legislative proposals on the Internet several days before Congress was to vote on them, so that everybody would know what was happening? This

was followed by an ObamaCare bill so huge and passed so fast that even members of Congress did not have time to read it. Remember his claims that previous administrations had arrogantly interfered in the internal affairs of other nations -- and then his demands that Israel stop building settlements and give away land outside its 1967 borders, as a precondition to peace talks with the Palestinians, on whom there were no preconditions? As for what happened in Libya, the Obama administration says that there is an “investigation” under way. An “on-going investigation” sounds so much better than “stonewalling” to get past election day. But you can bet the rent money that this “investigation” will not be completed before election day. And whatever the investigation says after the election will be irrelevant. The events unfolding in Benghazi on the tragic night of SepSee Sowell on 21

Aboriginal painting “Platypus Dreaming. by Kimberly B. Severance Contributing Writer

Training to be an artist is a personal journey. Some aspiring artists attend prestigious schools and with the proper credentialing, become part of academia. Professors have one foot in the academic world and the other foot in the art world. Hopefully, they find this the best of both worlds. Other aspiring artists take courses and classes. They practice to hone their skills in their particular area of interest. Still other artists receive no training at all. These are the folk artists, outsider artists, naĂŻve artists, Sunday painters and so on. Another category altogether is the culturally inspired work of the Australian Aborigines. The Aborigines are a people who possess strong ties to their ancestors and a reverence for the natural environment. These two subjects dominate their uniquely exquisite paintings called Dreamings. A nomadic in lifestyle

prompted the Aborigines to express what comes natural to them while using materials they created from what nature provided. Pulverizing materials from plant and animal materials and using bark as “canvas, the work was created in eerily exquisite aerial views using intricate patterns of dots. While our culture passes on heritage through folk stories and photo albums, these Dreamings share stories as well. In fact, the Aborigines are often reticent to discuss these cherished and private stories. We are left to appreciate the art and artists while understanding only a portion of the cultural implications. These works are deserving in their beauty and mystique. Topics for the sometimes mammoth sized artworks include images of waterholes, witchety grubs, snakes and honey ants. Other subjects include crocodiles, emus, rainbows and stories of women. Often employed is the X-ray image, depicting the view of the interior of their

3\UJO +PUULY

animal subjects. Far from the clichÊ look of a successful artist as intellectual or even the starving artist, these Aboriginal artists were unaware of the cultural perceptions held by many first world citizens. However, upon the discovery of these nature made artists (as opposed to the trained variety), the civilized world offered gallery representation and the use of modern materials to replace such things as human hair brushes. Cloth canvases and new colors added a modern dimension to the tradition. Monetary benefits and recognition for this art is well deserved. However, the Aborigines are wise to retain what makes them successful at what they do without the imposition of the rules of academia or the dilution of one’s culture by another. Kimberly B. Severance is an artist and art teacher who will be contributing occasional articles concerning all avenues of art. Her email is artgirl@weirs.com.

Defeat Obama – Take Back Our Country For Those Who Follow! THIS IS IT- DECISION TIME. Did you vote for Obama in 2008? Have you seen enough to know that BARACK by Niel Young HUSSEIN Advocates Columnist OBAMA is not the right choice to lead our great country, AMERICA? Way too dangerous to re-elect a man who says he is not through yet, “we have more to do. Just a few reminders of why we cannot trust this man with our country. According to A US Senator, OBAMA on March 20, 2006 said this: “The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries. Increasing the debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. So, Obama back then thought America’s debt problem was a failure of leadership and Americans deserve better. Unfortunately, he has left the problems he speaks of to our children and grandchildren to repay. *************** I thought excerpts from The Detroit Press ENDORSEMENT would affirm your intention to vote ROMNEY/ RYAN, as are BETTY and I. “Americans will be making two choices when they cast their presidential ballots on Nov. 6 - They will be selecting the individual who will lead the nation over the next four years, a period that promises to be every bit as challenging as the past four -They also will be charting a longterm course for America. “Hope and change are still what Americans are seeking. This time, Republican challenger and Michigan native MITT ROMNEY offers the best hope of changing the nation’s fate. More: “Aside from his sterling resume, we also see in

Romney a strength of character. HE IS HIS OWN MAN. We doubt he will be led off course by those who place party ahead of the good of the country- In Monday night’s final presidential debate, Romney passed the commanderin-chief test, demonstrating a level-headed view of foreign affairs. As we said, this is more than a choice between two individuals - America is locked in a struggle over what it will be as a mature nation -A country built on rugged individualism finds itself increasingly under the thumb of a federal government that is ever expanding its reach into the lives of its citizens. “OBAMA has proved himself a disciple of the doctrine that for every problem there’s a government solution -Romney, by contrast, embraces individual initiative and entrepreneurship. He would turn back the encroachment of the bureaucracy into the private sector. “Romney would replace the heavy hand of government with the invisible hand of a rational marketplace working to produce broad prosperity. While both poverty and dependency have increased on Obama’s watch, Romney promises to replace government checks with private sector jobs and reverse the decline in middle class incomes. It is heavy lifting, but we favor the candidate who is committed to it. Romney’s goal is to help all Americans live independent and productive lives, free to rise to the extent of their personal capabilities. He would not shield them from risk or the consequences of their decisions, but neither would he deny them their earned rewards. “Our hope is that MITT ROMNEY would restore faith in the core principles of free men and women, free minds and free markets that made America great, and will keep it so. Amen!

rubber stamp for OBAMA’S SOCIALISM. Out of the fine group of Republicans in the 2010 Primary I chose FRANK GUINTA. Congressman Guinta will be far more helpful in saving America than his challenger who does not grasp what the folks back home want, she is tied to Obama’s plan.

************** In New Hampshire we need not send two “screaming liberals to Congress. While this is the first time CHARLIE BASS has been mentioned, Charlie will act in the best interests of NH, and his opponent, would be a

************** Once again, vote as if the future of our children, grandchildren, and country’s survival were at stake. Please visit http://youtu.be/JEhvF8b8Mrg

**************** Two years ago Sen. MAGGIE HASSAN lost her seat in Concord. The voters of her District made a change. She is just too darned LIBERAL. OVIDE LAMONTAGNE will get our votes. We need a governor who is not interested in photo-ops or naming the state fruit. Enough of that. And we do not need a pro-state income tax, antiRight To Work, pro-Big Government spending, screaming Liberal on social issues, governor. What we need is Ovide utilizing his experience and leadership to make NH a symbol of fiscal sanity again. You see, we already have a President who is allconsumed with social justice and abortion, what has BHO done for Americans who want to work – other than unions, that is? ************** I am aware there are some RINOs that unfortunately survived the primary – I am also aware that there are Republicans who are taxpayer funded employees seeking a seat in the NH House. What would I do? If I know that legislator is going to cost me money in new benefit packages or voting against RTW, leave their name blank. They are not there for us property taxpayers, and don’t tell me their position in our city is being covered, without it costing us money. Isn’t it better knowing that a Democrat is working against us, as they normally do! Otherwise vote for the Republican.

Ellis. “It just warms your heart, especially when I see Billy with old people. Eighteen years ago, on Christmas Eve, Ellis’ husband went to buy a computer and came back instead with a $2700 six-week-old blue and gold macaw. Ellis spent Christmas vacation bonding with Billy, learning his needs and behaviors. After nearly two decades of patience and human companionship, Billy has mellowed to the point of being a gentle, welcome and predictable visitor at the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton, the Belknap County Nursing Home and St. Francis Home in Laconia, where he sits placidly on the arms of elderly residents with dementia, and submits to being patted as briskly as a German Shepherd. “He’s bomb proof now. You can go anywhere with this guy. At home he perches on Ellis shoulder or arm, and nestles against her, blushing with contentment, sometimes pretending to regurgitate to prove that he’d be a good provider. He likes scrambled eggs and toast for breakfast, and peanut butter sandwiches for lunch. He also enjoys riding on the steering wheel of Ellis’s car, and sits on a saw at the tile company that Ellis and her husband own. “This bird is just a great deal of love and patience, says Ellis. “I never gave up. There’s no denying the birds are beautiful and entertaining. Billy can figure out puzzles and toys; Billy and BooBoo can undo the double latch system on their cages and let themselves out – so Ellis has had to install a third lock. When Ellis sings a rendition of Disco Fever called “Birdy Fever Billy starts to dance. He’s also potty trained, perching on the lid of the garbage can when Ellis lifts the lid. also tell the other birds to shut up when they get too noisy. “He also sits on the shower curtain when I’m taking a shower and laughs in Scott’s voice. It throws your self-esteem right down the drain.” Billy likes to stand on the kitchen table and look out the window to watch people. He likes to imitate barking dogs. He also wolf-whistled once at a state trooper parked across the street, so Ellis took him outside. “I just wanted to let you know that that’s a bird and not me,” Ellis told him. There have also been trying times. One day, when Billy was six months old, Ellis and her husband Scott came home to a kitchen disaster. “It looked like we’d been robbed,” recalls Ellis. Everything was thrown on the floor, including the houseplants, and the macaw’s face was covered with dark blue ink. He had chewed up the pencils and pens on the counter and devoured the wooden handles on the steak knives in one of the drawers. One day, when Scott’s hockey-playing friends came to the house, Billy decided he didn’t like them – at all. He dropped his beak to the floor and

ran at them like a bulldozer. “One guy ran out of here screaming,” Ellis recalls. Once, when a friend stopped by with a homemade pie, Billy jumped on her back and wouldn’t let go. The woman spun in circles, shrieking while Billy hung on, screeching along with her. “Only my two kids and my husband and I can handle them,” Ellis says. “People are afraid of birds. They see something this large with this.” She points to Billy’s powerful black beak. “And they want to keep a distance.” Over time, the transformation of Ellis’s birds has been slightly short of miraculous. BooBoo, an adult female whose feathers were gray and broken from malnutrition, is now healthy and colorful after years of good feeding. She came to the Ellis family at age six, looking like a threadbare stuffed animal, after living with a woman who fed her by syringe, Ellis says. This led to prolonged health problems and malnutrition from aspirating food into her lungs; Booboo has never grown to full size. “We call her the X-back Fighter because of the way her wings cross in the back,” Ellis says, be-

She laughs like us and repeats different voices,” Ellis says. BooBoo says, ‘That’s good’ when she likes her food, and ‘That’s hot’ when something comes out of the microwave, and ‘Hi, Momma Bird’ when Ellis comes home. The really difficult rehaSee baker on 14

bilitation has been Anna. She was found in Massachusetts locked in the attic of a house occupied by drug dealers, where she survived by eating empty French fry containers from MacDonald’s and old newspapers, Ellis says. When she moved in with the Ellis family, she still wouldn’t eat anything but the newspaper lining her cage, and her face was black and blue from having been hit with a TV remote. “Sometimes she’ll still screams like a woman being murdered. She also says, ‘Shut up, you’re a bad bird’ in a rough-sounding voice.” To this day Anna cannot be held. But she is content to nest in her cage surrounded by her collection of tiny toy rubber ducks, as long as there are other parrots in the room, too. Ellis points to nearly invisible scars from early days with the birds. “Anna did that one. The crescent’s made by the bottom of her beak. Poppy, a bronze wing pionus parrot that Ellis rescued, was also a biter. “He’d say to himself, ‘Now be a good boy, Poppy.’ Then he would sink his beak into you and twist. Like

who need a flock,” Ellis says. “They should have never been pets. They don’t do well left alone in a cage all day.” Just like humans left in captivity, they’ll selfmutilate, digging holes into their flesh. “When Billy’s bored or lonely or anxious, he chews his tail feathers like some of us chew our fingernails,” Ellis says.

On Corporal Punishment in Sports

A recent Associated Press/Des Moines Register story out of Iowa pointed out that the practice of coaches using extra running to punish players for poor performance or behavior is getting scrutiny following a school district report about a Des Moines football coach being accused of violating corporal punishment policies by making a student sprint and take laps. Sprints and laps? OMG! Say it isn’t so, coach! The report examined the suspended high school coach’s actions. A sophomore player was punished for making derogatory comments about upperclassmen. A school investigation determined that the Lincoln High player ran at least 20 hill sprints, completed 20 up-anddown drills, lapped the practice field twice and then went on to run more hill sprints. Corporal punishment is illegal in Iowa schools and is defined as physical force or physical contact made with the intent to harm or cause pain. That law provides a specific exemption for “reasonable requests or requirements of a student engaged in activities associated with physical education class or extracurricular athletics. Thomas Mayes, an attorney for the Iowa Department of Education, believes that running or extra conditioning could

be considered corporal punishment under the law, but said “there is no bright line that can be drawn between what is reasonable and unreasonable. Okay. Now parents and lawyers are trying to dictate to coaches with regard to conditioning and team discipline. Not good. I can see some locker room lawyers refusing to do wind sprints, citing this case as precedent, and I can easily imagine coaches changing their approaches in an effort to avoid trouble. Playing on a team is a privilege, not a right. As a condition of participation, athletes surrender a measure of sovereignty to coaches. Coaches may actually make them run. Vince Lombardi is turning over in his grade, I’m sure! On Being Fat Along the same lines, coaches apparently need to censor themselves now as well. Mike Manzoni of KRIS-TV in Corpus Christi, Texas, recently reported that Sharla Lozano, the mother of an Orange Grove junior varsity football player, filed a police report after she said the head football coach called her son a “loser, before making disparaging remarks about her weight. She said she would not accept an apology from the coach unless it was videotaped by a news camera. But the coach, Jerry Bomar, balked at the demand. Lozano then filed her complaint with Orange Grove police, alleging that after confronting Bomar about her son’s lack of playing time, he called her “fat, and followed her into the high school’s parking lot where he went into a profanity-laced tirade – which Bomar denies. It sounds like Bomar may have overdone it,

but many coaches and educators probably vicariously enjoy the notion of someone finally responding vigorously to some pretentious, loudmouthed parent. If the player really was a ne’er-do-well, and if the mother really was fat, then is it possible that Coach Bomar may have uttered some truths that just needed to be articulated? Perhaps. But there is a place for tact and finesse. Bomar could have started off by praising the son’s better qualities and complimenting the mom for her interest and involvement, etc. etc. – that insincere approach that so many educators take so as to avoid police reports and the like. Still, sometimes people just tell it like it is, and THAT can be refreshing. On the Granite State 10 Miler Along with a few hundred other runners I recently participated in the Granite State 10 miler, in search of something a bit more challenging than the ubiquitous 5K races, and enjoyed a splendid autumn journey on some beautiful back roads in east Concord. What really struck me, though, were all the

There are some memories that never fade from one’s mind. As we get older, we tend to hold on to the special occasions that define a moment in time. Each season of change opens the gates to the reflections of the mind’s eye. Each year the flashbacks grow stronger until you wonder if the moment is a memory or occurring for the very first time. O n e c o l d f a l l morn ing many years ago, as my son Nicholas and I looked out the living room window at the bird feeders, oblong shapes appeared up on the hill on the other side of our ancient rock wall. Our property is fortunate to have boundaries marked by previous generations of pioneers who laid out the land in this wondrous fashion. We pressed our faces against the cold window glass as five, ten, fifteen and more wild turkeys slowly did their recognizable trot across the woodland floor, scratching at the layer of leaves as they fed on the abundance of natural food. They were unruffled by the morning sounds of automobiles, dogs barking in the distance and the usual scurrying of ground critters. We were fascinated at the obvious hierarchy, the constant line of birds, continuing to-

wards the street. As they cautiously approached the road, they maintained their single file and headed towards the driveway. Just beyond, leaning against a huge boulder, was our Halloween scarecrow. We used an old pair of trousers and a flannel shirt, stuffed with leaves to create the illusion of a resting human. When the lead turkey caught sight of this, it stopped abruptly. In rapid succession, each wild bird in the chorus line followed suit, creating a traffic jam. The turkeys displayed their own distress signs; wing flapping, short take-offs, and quick step trotting. Then every bird froze. All necks stretched high. Time had stopped without a whisper of sound to be heard anywhere. Not one bird would cross the imaginary line of safety. Then, without warning, the lead bird turned tail and headed across the street into our neighbor’s yard. Each turkey followed this male tom, never wavering from the abstract demarcation that was left by the leader. My son and I remained at our post, relishing the moment as nature continued on its way.

Each time I witness the flocking of wild turkeys on our street, I remember this special moment with my son. It’s just another sign of age and experience that is part of the plan. It’s mine and mine alone to keep with me forever. When my son becomes a man and leaves the nest, I know he will create his own reflections of time with his children. I hope I am there to be a part of it. Enjoy your birds. Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. published an article on the Camp Bastion attack titled “The U.S. Suffered Its Worst Airpower Loss Since Vietnam Last Week and No One Really Noticed.” A few right-leaning blogs raised troubling questions about preparedness and security. “How did this band of radicals even manage to approach a highly advanced multi-national military base without being detected, much less force their way inside en masse?” asked Kim Zigfeld of the American Thinker. “How were they able to attack so quickly and efficiently that, even though nearly every one of them was killed in the effort, they were able to harm the mighty leathernecks more than they had been in half a century?” National Review’s Jonathan Foreman wondered whether Pakistan was behind the attack. “It seems likely that the special forces of a professional army planned the raid, and trained, advised and led the raiders -- that is if they did not actually take part in it. Those special forces would, of course, be those of Pakistan,” Foreman posited. “This may sound shocking, but it would hardly be the first time that Pakistani special forces have operated in Afghanistan on behalf of Islamabad’s allies and proxies.” President Obama has referred callously to the murders of our civilian diplomatic staff in Benghazi as “bumps in the road.” Even more maddening, though, is the radio silence from the White House about what happened that day at Camp Bastion -- and what, if anything, Obama’s Pentagon did between the last major attack on Bastion in March and the bloody siege in September. Somehow, a band of 15 insurgents managed to penetrate the wire with assault rifles, rocketpropelled grenades and other weapons on 9/14. Their destruction was of

historic proportions. The attack came six months after U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta was the target of a failed suicide attack attempt at Bastion. The (UK) Sun reported at the time that an Afghani was believed to have made the deliberate attempt on Panetta after “he broke through defenses and drove a vehicle towards his aircraft. He then went past the perimeter surrounded by armed security and large concrete block guards. Disaster was only averted when the truck caught fire and crashed into a ditch on the runway close to where Mr. Panetta’s jet had landed or was set to land.” Team Obama mocks GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney with snarky lines about bayonets and binders. The thin-skinned commander in chief exploits Seal Team Six to burnish his “leadership” cred. And the president’s campaign surrogates have ceaselessly attacked their critics as “unpatriotic” for questioning this administration’s commitment to national security. But silence is complicity. The questions must be asked: Did politically correct rules of engagement hamper our troops’ defenses? Who knew what and when? Who was behind the attackers? And what is being done to ensure our frontline defenders of freedom are able to defend themselves? tember 11th were being relayed to the State Department as the attacks were going on, “in real time, as they say. So the idea that the Obama administration now has to carry out a time-consuming “investigation to find out what those events were, when the information was immediately available at the time, is a little much. The full story of what happened in Libya, down to the last detail, may never be known. But, as someone once said, you don’t need to eat a whole egg to know that it is rotten. And you don’t need to know every detail of the events before, during and after the attacks to know that the story put out by the Obama a d m i n i stration w as a fraud. The administration’s initial story that what happened in Benghazi began as a protest against an anti-Islamic video in America was a very convenient theory. The most obvious alternative explanation would have been devastating to Barack Obama’s much heralded attempts to mollify and pacify Islamic nations in the Middle East. To have helped overthrow pro-Western governments in Egypt and Libya, only to bring anti-Western Islamic extremists to power would have been revealed as a foreign policy disaster of the first magnitude. To have been celebrating President Obama’s supposedly heroic role in the killing of Osama bin Laden, with the implication that Al Qaeda was crippled, would have been revealed as a farce. Osama bin Laden was by no means the first man to plan a surprise attack on America and later be killed. Japan’s Admiral Yamamoto planned the attack on Pearl Harbor that brought the United States into World War II, and he was later tracked down and shot down in a plane that was carrying him. Nobody tried to depict President Franklin D.

Roosevelt as some kind of hero for having simply authorized the killing of Yamamoto. In that case, the only hero who was publicized was the man who shot down the plane that Yamamoto was in. Yet the killing of Osama bin Laden has been depicted as some kind of act of courage by President Obama. After bin Laden was located, why would any President not give the go-ahead to get him? That took no courage at all. It would have been far more dangerous politically for Obama not to have given the go-ahead. Moreover, Obama hedged his bets by authorizing the admiral in charge of

the operation to proceed only under various conditions. This meant that success would be credited to Obama and failure could be blamed on the admiral -- who would join George W. Bush, Hillary Clinton and other scapegoats for Obama’s failures. Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305. His website is www.tsowell.com.

Governor Romney has also expressed the importance of a “real” energy policy that focuses more on production of domestic oil and gas, as well as supporting the construction of the Keystone Pipeline which will not only help bring down the cost of oil and with it, the cost of everything else from groceries to clothing, but will also create tens of thousands of “real” jobs. As we come to this crossroad, the choice is clear. This election is all about our economy. President Obama had his turn, we waited and hoped - nothing worked, nothing changed. The road has led nowhere. It’s time to start again with new ideas by people who know how to make them work. We are confident that with Mitt Romney at the wheel, the road ahead will be much smoother.

He also has proved he knows how to reach across the aisle to accomplish his goals. In choosing Paul Ryan as his running mate, Governor Romney has picked a man who is a true student of economics and understands how things actually work. You can be sure these men won’t just be guessing with their fingers crossed. President Obama has turned his back on the critical production of our domestic natural resources, oil and gas, but has provided billions of taxpayer dollars to alternative energy companies which have failed; at a time when it is costing American families thousands of extra

EdenPURE reopens Ohio factory creates 250 new jobs ®

New models shipped direct from warehouse at 49% savings Richard Karn, North Canton, Ohio

I was fortunate enough to attend the grand opening of the new EdenPURE® factory in North Canton, Ohio. The new plant brought hundreds of new jobs back to Ohio and reversed the common practice of sending Midwest manufacturing jobs to China. Now, EdenPURE ® continues to ramp up production for the coming Winter with exciting new models and hundreds of new employees as this Made in America success story continues to grow. American Labor, American Quality With over 3 million portable heaters sold EdenPURE ® is the best selling portable infrared heating system in North America. However, like any classic, EdenPURE ® has dozens of would-be competitors who create Asian copies at low prices using cheap, foreign labor. Don’t be fooled by these imitations. Look for the EdenPURE® logo and the Made in North Canton, Ohio stamp. Save like millions of others on your heating bills and say “NO” to cheap foreign imitators. Save up to 49% on 2013 EdenPURE®s Now readers can save up to 49% ($229 the largest savings ever on new EdenPURE ® s). EdenPURE® is not just the best-selling portable heating system in North America. As an EdenPURE® owner I rank EdenPURE® #1 for quality, safety and efficiency. And now is the perfect time to save like never before on our expanded 2013 EdenPURE ® line made in our brand new North Canton, Ohio facility. With two models EdenPURE® can meet all of your heating requirements 365 days a year. Stay Comfortable 365 Days a Year “Never be cold again” is the EdenPURE® promise. EdenPURE® provides you insurance against the cold all year long. Stay comfortable on those unseasonably chilly evenings no matter the season. I live in California but believe me it gets cold at night. Keep your expensive furnace turned down until it’s absolutely necessary. And if we are fortunate enough to experience a mild winter as many of us did in the Midwest last year, you keep your furnace off all season

PERSONAL

MODEL 750

As Al Borland on Home Improvement I was the man with all the answers. However, as Richard Karn I still look for money saving and efficient heating in my home. I have an EdenPURE® Infrared Portable Heater in my California home and like millions of others found it to be a super-safe, reliable source of portable heat all year long. and save even bigger. New, More Efficient Models The engineers at EdenPURE® listened to their millions of customers and somehow managed to improve the #1 portable heater in North America. Through old fashioned American ingenuity the new EdenPURE® line is more efficient to save you even more money. The EdenPURE ® Personal Heater now heats a larger area, an increase from 350 square feet to 500 square feet. That’s a 30% increase in efficiency! And EdenPURE ® is proud to introduce the 2013 Model 750. The new Model 750 is perfect for larger areas and heats up to 750 square feet. But the best thing about the Model 750 is the price. We priced the Model 750 at only $50 above the Personal Heater. This means you receive a 33% increase in performance for only $50. That’s American engineering at its best! The EdenPURE® can cut your heating bills and pay for itself in a matter of weeks, and then start

putting a great deal of extra money in your pocket after that. Super Safe Infrared Heat Now remember, a major cause of residential fires in the United States is carelessness and faulty portable heaters. The choice of fire and safety professional, Captain Mike Hornby, the EdenPURE® has no exposed heating elements that can cause a fire. And a redundant home protection system that simply shuts the EdenPURE® down if it senses danger. That’s why grandparents and parents love the EdenPURE®. The outside of the EdenPURE® only gets warm to the touch so that it will not burn children or pets. And your pet may be just like my dog who has reserved a favorite spot near the EdenPURE ® . You see the EdenPURE® uses infrared heat. And just as pets enjoy basking in a beam of sunlight they try to stay close to EdenPURE ® ’s “bone-warming” infrared heat. The Health Secret is in the Copper

EdenFLOW™ technology uses copper heating chambers to take the energy provided by our special SYLVANIA infrared bulbs and distribute our famous soft heat evenly throughout the room. Now our copper isn’t ordinary. It’s 99.9% pure antimicrobial copper from an over 150 year old American owned company in Pennsylvania. So your EdenPURE ® heater is continuously pushing soft, healthy, infrared heat throughout your room. How to Order During our 2013 introduction you are eligible for a $202 DISCOUNT PLUS FREE SHIPPING AND HANDLING FOR A TOTAL SAVINGS OF $229 ON THE EDENPURE® MODEL 750 AND A $175 DISCOUNT PLUS FREE SHIPPING AND HANDLING FOR A TOTAL SAVINGS OF $192 ON THE EDENPURE ® PERSONAL HEATER. Flies, of our own pattern, were the choice bait for this nice salmon caught in early August. #4, streamer flies. Ninety-nine percent of the fish during these times are lip hooked and fall right off the hook when netted. We also keep two nets on board, a rubber net for fish that are going to be released and a cloth net for the “Keepers.” The rubber net affords much less damage to the fish and helps to insure survival. We are going to be trying out a new method of releasing fish during the 2013 season. I really don’t want to get into it at this time, but if we are successful with it, you will hear about it, for sure. Spring fishing did not produce a lot of rainbows, but that all changed when August rolled around and we hooked up with a fair number of real fat and

healthy rainbows. As a rule, the fall fishing produces a lot of real hefty salmon and hooking up with one of these is a real thrill when you are using only 4-lb test mono leader with a barbless fly as terminal. You have to learn the technique real quick. It’s interesting that I find that most of the youngsters grab the concept quite quickly. The adults, well, that’s another story. However, after “Dropping” a few, they catch on. To finish up my summary of the 2012 season, it is my understanding, as I didn’t get to wet a line after Labor Day, that the first week or so the fishing was OK but slowed down rather quickly. Well, circumstances what they were (again, See grasso on 25

more on this later), I got to have the boat winterized & wrapped for winter quite early this year. As far as that goes, we also had a great season with the boat. No major issues and not even many minor issues to contend with. This goes a long way for making the case for preventive maintenance. Last year we did have an issue (not found until we pulled out for the year) with varnish building up

in the new 9.9hp Yamaha. This was puzzling as we run this out of a 3 gallon tank and have fresh gas almost all of the time. We did treat the gas, as directed, and still had a bit of a problem. This was diagnosed as the ultraviolet rays from the sun, penetrating the plastic tank and degrading the fuel. Solution, cover or remove the tank when not in use. We chose to keep it covered at all times and‌ “Voilaâ€?

problem solved. My understanding is that all of the new tanks contain a pigment, in the paint/ dye that inhibits these rays from penetrating the tank. I guess this is a “Heads upâ€? to all of us that are using tanks produced prior to 2012. Later‌‌‌‌‌ Capt. Pete

“spontaneous event. Within minutes of the CIA alert that Americans were at risk -- and before it was known that Klinghoffer was dead -- a National Security Council-led counterterrorism task force was convened by secure conference call. From Air Force One en route to Chicago, President Reagan approved the first recommendation of the task force -- deployment of a specially trained and equipped unit from the Joint Special Operations Command to the region. While the JSOC team was heading east from the U.S., Reagan ordered every available U.S. military and intelligence asset in the eastern Mediterranean to find and track the vessel -- and asked every littoral government in the area to deny port access to the hijackers. Despite abysmal weather conditions at sea, U.S.

Navy and Air Force units located the cruise ship and followed it to Alexandria, Egypt. When Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak lied to President Reagan about the terrorists having escaped, we knew better. In those days, our relationship with the Israeli government was so good that members of it contacted us to tell us where the perpetrators were, the tail number of the EgyptAir commercial aircraft Mubarak had provided to fly them to Tunisia and the takeoff time. The president immediately approved a plan crafted by the task force, the Joint Chiefs, the JSOC and the U.S. Navy’s 6th Fleet to intercept the civilian airliner and force it to land at the NATO air base at Sigonella, Italy. Less than four hours later, the terrorists and their ringleader -- Abu Abbas, head of the PLF -- were captured.

OBITUARY Robert J. Hughes

Bedford and Moultonboro NH Bob Hughes, father of six, grandfather to eighteen, and totally devoted husband to his wife of 61 years Estella (Mongan) Hughes, died October 23, 2012 at home, at peace, and with his wife at his side, after a courageous battle with leukemia. He was born November 28, 1926 to Edward and Ellen (Nellie) Hughes and spent his childhood in Manchester and at Lake Winnipesaukee. Bob graduated from Saint Joseph’s High School and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Saint Anselm College. He married Estella A. Mongan, the love of his life, on September 15, 1951. Together, they built a life that was always active, ever-changing and never boring. After a successful career in the auto industry, he went on to found Manor Homes Builders, “Builders of the American Dream. His talent was recognized in 1995 with an unprecedented nine NH Homebuilders Association awards. The Hughes home at Lake Winnipesaukee was featured in Custom Builder Magazine as “Best in the Northeast. He has left a lasting reminder of his creativity, his imagination and his perfectionism on dozens of Bedford streets lined with gracious Manor homes. His greatest thrill was seeing his wife and business partner featured in Builder Magazine, as the first woman ever to reach national prominence in the industry. Most people would find two careers and six kids a full life’s work, but Bob was so much more. He was a champion sailor, hockey player, ballroom dancer, water and snow skier, history buff, big band enthusiast, and practical joker. He refinished antique ChrisCrafts, built magical kingdoms for his kids in the basement, and brought home mini bikes, boats, scooters, go-carts and juke boxes. He built a cabin cruiser from scratch and vacation homes - one a national award winner - at Lake Winnipesaukee. Bob and Estella travelled around the world including Ireland, Egypt, England, France, Alaska, Greece, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and more. Bob’s service to his community included state and national posts with the National Association of Homebuilders, volunteer with Rebuilding Together and the United Way, Republican activist for both Bush for President campaigns, Bob and Elizabeth Dole’s campaigns, and countless others, CCD teacher, youth sports coach and benefactor to the Bedford Library and Playground building campaigns. A devout Catholic, he was a parishioner at St. Elizabeth Seton and St. Charles Borromeo Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Cynthia (Steve) Sauter, David (Kim) Hughes, Pamela (Chuck) Patenaude, Kevin (Patricia) Hughes, Lisa (Bobby) Berge, and John (Pamm) Hughes; and grandchildren Rob, Matt, Doug, Kristen, Greg, Caitlin, Meghan, Jennifer, Eileen, Abigail, Christina, Brianna, Jack, Ashleigh, Ryan, Morgan, Nicholas, and Arianna. He is also survived by his brother in law, former Manchester Mayor John Mongan, and sister in law Hellen Gallup. He has joined his parents and his siblings Edward and Rita in Heaven. Bob has left behind a legacy of love and gratitude. He was cared for throughout his illness by his daughter Lisa and was surrounded in his last days by every member of his family. Most importantly, he has left a promise to his wife Estella that their love affair (in his words) “is a flame to burn through eternity and in Heaven too he would hold her hand. His last words to her were “I love you. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests that memorial donations be made to the Monastery at Saint Anselm College; Saint Anselm Abbey, 100 Saint Anselm Drive, Manchester NH 03102. To send an online message of condolence, please go to www.lambertfuneralhome.com.

Contrast this scenario with what we now know from previously undisclosed emails exchanged among various Obama administration officials about what transpired in Benghazi. The White House apparently was notified within minutes of the attack’s being launched on our consulate. From ground-based FLIR cameras and live imagery from at least one unmanned aerial vehicle overhead, officials at the CIA, Pentagon, State Department and White House could see with extraordinary clarity what was going on as military assaults were mounted against the U.S. Consulate and then a nearby annex over the course of more than eight hours. Unlike those during the Achille Lauro incident, the O-Team’s decision-makers knew precisely what was happening in real time in Benghazi. Yet apparently, they did little more than wring their hands and stare at their widescreen monitors as Americans were dying. In 1985, we had no real-time information other than what was provided by the Israelis or the scant information gleaned from the ship-to-shore radiotelephone calls by the terrorists to their chief, Abu Abbas. We had no UAVs or live coverage. We had no prepositioned forces on the

ground; the JSOC unit that captured the hijackers and turned them over to Italian authorities had to be flown to Sicily from the U.S. On Sept. 11, 2012, there were dozens of U.S. military aircraft stationed within an hour’s flight time of Benghazi. A U.S. Marine contingent and a U.S. special operations unit were less than two hours away by air, remarkably enough in Sigonella -- the very place the Achille Lauro terrorists were captured. A White House spokesman now claims that the O-Team couldn’t commit military force without “diplomatic clearance from the Libyan government. Good thing that provision of international law doesn’t apply in Pakistan or Yemen. Our current commander in chief cannot answer the question, What did you do to save and protect American lives? On Nov. 6, we need to fire him and hire a new one who is up to the most important responsibility for the president of the United States. Salome’s Stars Horoscope ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your honesty continues to impress everyone who needs reassurance about a project. But be careful you don’t lose patience with those who are still not ready to act. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Pushing others too hard to do things your way could cause resentment and raise more doubts. Instead, take more time to explain why your methods will work. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be more considerate of those close to you before making a decision that could have a serious effect on their lives. Explain your intentions and ask for their advice. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might have to defend a workplace decision you plan to make. Colleagues might back you up on this, but it’s the facts that will ultimately win the day for you. Good luck. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Big Cat’s co-workers might not be doing enough to help get that project finished.

Your roars might stir things up, but gentle purrr-suasion will prove to be more effective. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone you care for needs help with a problem. Give it lovingly and without judging the situation. Whatever you feel you should know will be revealed later. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) While you’re to be admired for how you handled recent workplace problems, be careful not to react the same way to a new situation until all the facts are in. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Rely on your keen instincts as well as the facts at hand when dealing with a troubling situation. Be patient. Take things one step at a time as you work through it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your curiosity leads you to ask questions. However, the answers might not be what you hoped to hear. Don’t reject them without checking them out.
