Belknap Mill Indoor Flea Market The Belknap Mill’s Indoor Flea Market on Saturday, April 20 from 8:30 am to 12 noon will offer a chance to clean out unwanted items…and make a little pocket money at the same time. For just $15.00 each, participants in the Flea Market can rent a table space on the Mill’s third floor function space. The Indoor Flea Market is a fundraiser for the Belknap Mill, a non-profit organization that offers year round art exhibits, concerts and other programs for adults and children. Along with the Flea Market, the Mill also will be featuring a baked goods table with yummy cookies, brownies, etc. for sale. To reserve a space in the Indoor Flea Market on April 20, call Nancy at 524-8813. For further information on Mill events or to become a member, visit www.belknapmill.org.

UNH Celebrity Series presents Biloxi Blues The University of New Hampshire Celebrity Series will present Montana Repertory Theatre’s touring production of Biloxi Blues on Tuesday, April 9 at 7pm at the Paul Creative Arts Center’s Johnson Theatre. Neil Simon’s hit play follows the adventures of Eugene Morris Jerome and his fellow Army inductees as they struggle through basic training near Biloxi, Mississippi, in 1943. An aspiring writer who sees himself as an outsider observing the craziness around him, Eugene hopes to somehow remain “neutral ... like Switzerland.” He spends much of his free time recounting conversations and impressions in his journal, feeling a little ashamed for betraying the “secret and private thoughts’’ of his fellow soldiers. Tickets for the series season can be purchased on line at www.unharts.com, or by calling 603-862-7222(PCAC). This year tickets will not be mailed; they must be picked up at the PCAC Box Office. The hours of operation are Monday – Friday, 10:00am – 5:00pm as well as one hour before each event.

pe’s p e s u i ts G Presen Yours truly making a run for the Vermont State House! Morse Farm in Montpelier Vermont hosted the annual Maple Onion 15k cross country ski race, sponsored by the Onion River Sports. Our Vermont friends invited us to race in this event that is a fundraiser for their local youth skiing program. The skiing at Morse farm is excellent and the trails wind through their many acres of maple trees. The sap buckets are now on the trees. Paying the fiddler isn’t fun but it must be done. The snow is fantastic and it made me want to skip out of work every day for the last two weeks. But we just got back from vacation! I am still catching up. I just had to make due by skiing in leagues on Monday and Thursday nights at Pats Peak and on Friday afternoon at Mount Sunapee and waiting for the weekend. I can cross country ski during the week at lunch time. Charlie had his snowmobile tuned up and has been grooming a loop out behind our house. I watched him ski from the kitchen window and he looked like a deer running through the woods. The terrain is fun and there is a good hill too but it only takes about four minutes

to complete a loop. After six laps it is time to go back to work anyway. Yes, skiing has been very good to me. Skiing is the reason I met my fine husband Charlie and many of my good friends. Most happy skiers know skiing isn’t just a sport, it is a lifestyle. We think about skiing twelve months of the year. Even the other

activities that Charlie and I enjoy we rationalize to help us be better skiers! I want to ski further, faster and enjoy more difficult terrain. We love the mountains and the winter outdoor adventure. I hope you too had a chance to get out enjoying this fine winter we are now having! The school See patenaude on 18

To The Editor: On February 21st, the State-Federal Relations and Veterans Affairs heard compelling testimony from a large group of impassioned NH citizens about why it should vote for HB 399, the Liberty Preservation Act, a bill that prohibits the state from supporting or implementing 2 sections of the National Defense Authorization Act. The parts that are of concern in the NDAA are those that would detain American citizens without charge or trial for an indefinite period of time. A week later, the committee voted unanimously in favor of this bill, 16-0. The Liberty Preservation Act, HB 399 will be voted on by our representatives on March 13, 2013. Anyone who cares for their civil liberties should phone, email, or write to their reps to make sure they understand what these 2 sections of the NDAA mean and urge them to vote for HB 399 if they are interested in protecting the rights of NH citizens. To The Editor: Ever wonder about the similarities of the Roman Empire and our present government? Here’s a condensed view I found in the Feb. Plains Baptist Challenger. Edward Gibbon, in 1788,

Our Story

set forth in his famous book “Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. 1. The undermining of the dignity of the sanctity of the home, which is the basis for human society. 2. Higher and higher taxes; the spending of public money for free bread and “circuses for the populace. 3. They became crazed for pleasure, with sports and plays, becoming more and more immoral. 4. The building of great armaments when the real enemy was within the decay of individual responsibility. 5. The decay of religion, whose leaders lost touch with reality and their ability to guide. It’s hard to argue with historic fact. Think about it; it may be the last chance some of us will ever get. Jay Gould Penacook, NH.

Waldron for Selectman To The Editor: I’ll be voting for Kevin Waldron for Northfield Selectman. The prime reason is that Kevin is a person who will watch my tax dollars as if they were his own. He is a consistent attendee at the meetings where our dollars are spent and frequently speaks up with excellent suggestions for savings. Lastly, I could never see Kevin voting for a raise for himself as Selectmen after the budget process was completed. His op-

ponent did exactly that and I could never support a person who puts their wants ahead of the taxpayers needs. That’s not the “experience our taxpayers can afford. Gregory Hill Northfield, NH.

What’s The Rush? To The Editor: While Rochester citizens continue to struggle with the everyday costs of providing for ourselves and our families, five of our Democratic members of NH’s House of Representatives voted to make life that much more difficult to manage. Representatives Anne Grassie, Pam Hubbard, David Miller and Audrey Stevens all voted to raise NH’s gas tax by 83% over five years. That’s fifteen cents over the next three years! Now I understand safe roads and bridges are important to NH’s economy and our ability to get to and from work. I also understand traveling over bad roads have associated costs with vehicle upkeep and no one wants to travel over a bridge that could collapse, but raising the gas tax by fifteen cents at a time when gas prices are soaring and alternative measures were available simply makes no sense. According to Charlie Arlinghaus from the Josiah Bartlett Center for Public Policy “A fourcent increase in the gas tax would raise about $27 See mail boat on 27

Good Things

Weirs Times Editor

Each week when I write this column, I try to keep the interest of my readers in mind. This week I’m writing one for myself. You’re invited to read along if you’d like. On February 28th I married my best friend. I was one of those divorced guys who swore he’d never get married again. It would take an exceptional person to break through that barrier. I was fortunate enough to find one. I met Kim back in 2010 and we hit it off very well from the start. After we had only known each other for about four months we decided to take a trip to New York to visit my family. It was the day before my birthday and I was feeling a little low; just getting over what I thought was the flu. Kim had never met anyone in my family up to that point. It would be my job to ease her through the meeting and be by her side as she got to know the family. It didn’t quite work out that way. Whatever bug I thought I had suddenly kicked into high gear once we arrived. I spent the entire day on the couch unable to even lift my head. I left Kim to her own defenses in “breaking the ice. I was told she did very well, though I don’t remember much.

the perfect match. Pretty incredible We had been talking about getting married for awhile. Maybe something next summer or the summer after. Invite family and friends and have a nice shindig. Eventually we decided to just go ahead and do it; and that’s what we did. It was a small ceremony with just the two of us and a couple of good friends to stand up for us. Kim had already bought her wedding dress months before. She saw it and knew it was the one, even if she didn’t know when we would get married. She has a great artistic eye for things and knows when something is right. I dug out my suit I hadn’t worn in awhile and, amazingly, it still fit. Those morning walks were good for something after all. The whole ceremony was about ten minutes. No music, no procession, just the four of us with some inspiring words to live by offered by the pastor who performed the ceremony. The four of us went out for a nice meal and we went home. The next morning Kim and I took a trip to New York to visit my family. This time the trip went much smoother. They say that good things do eventually come to those who wait. I’m sure someone really did say that. But if they didn’t, at 57 years old, I’m the living proof. Thanks for indulging me on this one. Brendan Smith welcomes your comments at brendan@weirs.com. The next day, my birthday, I wasn’t feeling much better and we left New York early to get home. Kim at the wheel through the 300-mile trip, she insisted on getting me to the emergency room despite my protest. “I’ll be better in the morning, I insisted. She would have none of it. We got to the hospital only to find that I was much worse than any of us had expected and I ended up staying there for three days. What followed for the next two months was a series of medical procedures and uncomfortable day-to-day things that are better left unsaid here. If anything was a test of love, this was it. She could have run, but she stayed and it made what was, up to that point, a strong relationship, a solid one. I think someone once said that you can find your greatest happiness through adversity. Well, maybe no one ever said that, but they should have. I’m not sure how well I would have gotten through it all without Kim. If I had to rely only on my stubborn self, I might not even be here today to write this column. Kim has also saved me in other ways. Being a creative person herself, she is a very motivated artist and art teacher, she keeps pushing me in my own creative attributes while at the same time always perfecting her own. She’s a great motivator and the success of her efforts can be seen in the two great children she raised as well as the students she inspires every day. Needless to say, I found

From The State House

Bad Bill of the Month HB 617 – Gas Tax Bill “…The Gift That Keeps On Giving…”

Last Wednesday, the NH House approved the largest tax hike in state history by increasing New Hampshire’s Gas Tax by a by Rep. Jane BILLION dolCormier lars over the Belknap District 8 next four years. Basically, it means paying about $3.00 more at the pump EACH time you fill up! The bill’s primary sponsor, Democrat David Campbell, from Nashua, sounded the CRISIS alarm that our bridges are about ready to drop! FEAR - FEAR - FEAR – a great way to hike taxes and raise fees. Now, I am not saying we do not have work to do on our roads and bridges, but to cause such alarm and use it to raise gas taxes by a whopping 83% is beyond the pale.

In trying to answer the “concern” for our roads and bridges, Former Speaker of the House, Rep. William O’Brien offered an amendment to the bill which would “fix the leaky bucket” that is our Highway Fund. (This fund is historically raided to serve other budgetary priorities.) This amendment would have dedicated 100% of the highway funds directly to the New Hampshire roads and bridges infrastructure. O’Brien offered, “If we stop the leaks, we’ll have twice as much in this budget than if you pass the tax increase.” Of course, this amendment was voted down by the Democratic majority and the original bill was debated (over 2 hours – UGH) then finally passed. Commonsense did not prevail, sad to say. And unfortunately, 15 Republicans voted FOR this immense tax increase. Now, in truth, Rep. Campbell

The Feds’ Invasive Student Tracking Database (This is the fourth installment of a continuing series on nationalized academic standards known as the “Common Core.”) While many by Michelle Malkin Syndicated Columnist Americans worry about government drones in the sky spying on our private lives, Washington meddlers are already on the ground and in our schools gathering intimate data on children and families. Say goodbye to your children’s privacy. Say hello to an unprecedented nationwide student tracking system, whose data will apparently be sold by government officials to the highest bidders. It’s yet another encroachment of centralized education bureaucrats on local control and parental rights under the banner of “Common Core.” As the American Principles Project, a conservative education think tank, reported last year, Common Core’s technological project is “merely one part of a much broader plan by the federal government to track individuals from birth through their participation in the workforce.” The 2009 porkulus package included a “State Fiscal Stabilization Fund” to bribe states into constructing “longitudinal data systems (LDS) to collect data on public-school students.” These systems will aggregate massive amounts of personal data -- health-care histories, income information, religious affiliations, voting status and even blood types and homework completion. The data will

be available to a wide variety of public agencies. And despite federal student-privacy protections guaranteed by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, the Obama administration is paving the way for private entities to buy their way into the data boondoggle. Even more alarming, the U.S. Department of Education is encouraging a radical push from aggregate-level data-gathering to invasive individual student-level data collection. At the South by Southwest education conference in Austin, Texas, this week, education technology gurus were salivating at the prospects of information plunder. “This is going to be a huge win for us,” Jeffrey Olen, a product manager at education software company CompassLearning, told Reuters. Cha-ching-ching-ching. The company is already aggressively marketing curricular material “aligned” to fuzzy, dumbed-down Common Core math and reading guidelines (which more than a dozen states are now revolting against). Along with two dozen other tech firms, CompassLearning sees even greater financial opportunities to mine Common Core student tracking systems. The centralized database is a strange-bedfellows alliance between the liberal Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (which largely underwrote and promoted the Common Core curricular scheme) and a division of conservative Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. (which built the database infrastructure). Another nonprofit startup, “inBloom, Inc.,” has evolved out of that partnership to operate the database. The Gates Foundation and other partners provided $100 million in seed money. Reuters

Syrian Schadenfreude UNITED NATIONS— A l l o f

Syria’s five neighboring countries sensed a quiet pleasure in seeing the rebellion against by John J. Metzler t h e D a m a s Syndicated Columnist cus dictatorship start three years ago. Many observers, knowing the authoritarian political pedigree of the Assad family rule, probably assumed Syria’s entrenched but moribund political system would be swept away by the winds of the so-called Arab Spring. Thus this misplaced sense of schadenfreude for what many thought would be another Egypt or Tunisia. But Syrians are a tougher and harsher lot as all sides to the conflict are proving. Now as the conflict, really a civil war, enters its third year with over 70,000 dead, the specter of a wider sectarian disaster looms both inside Syria and with collateral damage spilling over into neighboring states, equally causing tense political relations between the USA and Russia. According to many security experts, Syria is disintegrating into a state where rebel warlords, militias, and an embattled Assad regime are divided along sectarian lines. Syria’s sanguinary struggle seems locked in stalemate and Islamic jihadi forces circle. For Russia, the Syrian state remains a crucial and protected geopolitical chess piece; a longtime regional political comrade dating to Soviet times. The close ties are something akin to the former U.S. stance towards Egypt before the Arab Spring swept away a pro-American and secular government replacing it with a Muslim brotherhood regime. Moscow has given the Syrian regime diplomatic cover fire in the UN Security Council and along with the People’s Republic of China, has exercised three vetoes to shoot down moderately mild resolutions aimed at stopping the violence and brokering political change. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei

Lavrov in a blunt meeting with Secretary Kerry failed to reach any understanding which would ease tensions in Syria. Now Russia, as president of the UN Security Council for March, will direct debate on the crisis. As a geographical neighbor, Turkey is keenly interested in Syria for three reasons. The Ankara government fears continuing refugee spillover and destabilization from the conflict. Already Turkey hosts over 250,000 Syrian refugees. Second, the Turks see the conflict within Islam, in this case between Ankara’s Islamic-lite Sunni Turkish government, supporting an embattled Sunni majority in Syria. Third, since Syria was part of the old Ottoman empire, there’s the nostalgic and cultural pull towards sorting things out in Damascus. In the wider scope, regional states face destabilization, especially tiny Lebanon where sectarian fault lines were long part of a fractious political landscape; the Kingdom of Jordan, another host for Syrian refugees but a state decidedly wary of allowing the Syrian spillover to tip a delicate political balance in Amman; Israel who can militarily take care of itself but fears wider regional chaos and the possible creation of an Islamic regime in Damascus; and both Iraq and the Islamic Republic of Iran whose Shiite majority has long supported Assad’s Allewite minority sect ruling in Damascus. So what about the U.S.? Amazingly, Assad’s secular Syrian regime was quietly courted early in the Obama Administration in the naïve presumption that an outstretched hand and wishful thinking would change the political game board. Indeed earlier in a deliberate political slap to the Bush Administration, Congressional Democrats led by Nancy Pelosi visited Damascus in 2007 to hobnob for “dialogue” with an isolated but hopefully reformist inclined Assad government. In 2005, Senator John Kerry visited Damascus to test political waters with the regime. When the Syrian uprising started, the Obama Administration was decidedly cautious and probably prudently so. After the

far more significant debacle in Egypt and the president’s initially wavering policy towards topping Libya’s dictator, admittedly Syria seemed a bridge too far. While initial hesitation may

have been prudent in 2011, the Syrian crisis spiraled out of control into a humanitarian nightmare with over 2 million people internally displaced according to the UN while another mil-

Economic Mobility Most people are not even surprised any more when they hear about someone who came here from Korea or Vietnam with very little money, by Thomas Sowell and very little Syndicated Columnist knowledge of English, who nevertheless persevered and rose in American society. Nor are we surprised when their children excel in school and go on to professional careers. Yet, in utter disregard of such plain facts, so-called “social scientists” do studies which conclude that America is no longer a land of opportunity, and that upward mobility is a “myth.” Even when these studies have lots of numbers in tables and equations that mimic the appearance of science, too often their conclusions depend on

wholly arbitrary assumptions. Even people regarded as serious academic scholars often measure social mobility by how many people from families in the lower part of the income distribution end up in higher income brackets. But social mobility -- the opportunity to move up -- cannot be measured solely by how much movement takes place. Opportunity is just one factor in economic advancement. How well a given individual or group takes advantage of existing opportunities is another. Only by implicitly (and arbitrarily) assuming that a failure to rise must be due to society’s barriers can we say that American society no longer has opportunity for upward social mobility. The very same attitudes and behavior that landed a father in a lower income bracket can land the son in that same bracket. But someone with a different set of attitudes and behavior may rise See Sowell on 26

one goes? Today’s wedding registries are still chock-full of china, saucers, spatulas and the like, but chances are your newlywed friends have already accumulated many of life’s necessities as a result of living on their own for years before marriage. A recent survey of firsttime newlyweds by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows the median age of people marrying for the first time in the U.S. is at an alltime high. And while the percentage of young men and women living with their parents has risen in the past decade, more than 80 percent of Americans ages 25 to 34 live independently before marriage, according to Census Bureau reports. So, what does a couple do when faced with duplicates of nearly everything before moving in together? “Detach,” is the advice from Sean E. Burns, a psychologist with Counseling Associates of West

Michigan. “Try to respect the fact that some people will build emotional attachments to items,” says Burns. “However, you must jointly establish reasonable limits. Otherwise, you risk associating sentimental value to everything in an effort to avoid difficult decisions.” Melanie Bergeron, former CEO and current chair of the board for the nation’s largest franchised moving company, Two Men And A Truck, suggests a successful move begins with an open mind. “I was 30 years old and my husband was 40 when we got married, so we had a lot of duplicates on that first move,” Bergeron says. “All my decor was light and contemporary and his was dark antiques, so I was certain we had a decorating nightmare on our hands. In reality, we ended up finding a happy medium and gave away those items we didn’t absolutely need. So, rule No. 1 is to keep an open mind See stuff on 9

Book Review The End Of Your Life Book Club by Simone Henderson Contributing Writer

The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe [ISBN #9780307594037] Hardcover I enjoy books; not just because I’m a bookseller, but because I love to read. Reading to me, is like breathing. It comes naturally. So when I spied this title on the new books list, I had to indulge. Even though the title is selfexplanatory, the memoir is profound, tender, and courageous. It’s a treasure. I lost my mother to breast cancer when I was barely eighteen years old. November 4th has forever been dog-eared in my life as the day I lost the woman who was my life. Every fall when it closes in on me, I find myself struggling with anxiety and a deep-set heartsickness. Watching someone you love literally pine away without a chance of changing the outcome was both frustrating and torment. It’s something you don’t forget. The loss of a parent – at a young age especially, leaves an incredible hole in your life. Reading about how others handle their grief during their own tragedy, has become a comfort to me; by reading the experiences of others I am reminded that am not alone. So when I picked up this book, I did so with caution. I knew how the story would end before I began reading it. I just had no idea how the journey to the inevitable would proceed. Will shares the story of his mother Mary Anne’s battle with pancreatic cancer; he does it with honesty, and gentleness. The two form a tiny book club and share their joy of the written word. They discuss an abundant and wide variety of literature as it relates to what they are experiencing in their everyday lives. For example in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, Will and his mother [who

is an advocate for refugees and a humanitarian] discuss how Larsson’s novel portrays a strong feminist current --one which inspires revulsion at the

sickening way in which women around the world are battered, tortured and abused. They note the characters [Lisbeth Salander and Bloomkvist] and how they complement one another even though there is a definite clash between Lisbeth’s digital world and Bloomkvist’s paper one. This contrary world in the novel invades their own world as Will clutches his

electronic reader --clicking through the pages while Mary Anne clutches her paperback novel in her lap. This incident serves as an example of how the book club becomes not only a discussion of literature between two people but a mirror into their own lives. A book club is defined as a group of people who gather together to discuss books. In the discussion, they learn about each other, the narrative and about the author. In “The End of Your Life Book Club”, we learn how two people, a son and his mother, interact during a difficult situation in which the outcome has already been set. Will achieves a shining success in bringing us close to his extraordinary mother during a very difficult and personal time in their lives. It is a remarkable tribute to the power of books –how they amaze us, how they teach us, and how they comfort us. “Reading is not the opposite of doing; it is the opposite of dying [“The End of Your Life Book Club” inside cover flap].”

THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, March 14, 2013

Rand; Good, McCain; Bad, Sarah; Good - GOP; On Life Support US Senators Ayotte, McCain, Graham had dinner with the Dictator in Chief. Did they have a good time by Niel Young Advocates Columnist e a t i n g like peasants? Did they create a tax friendly environment resulting in any jobs, or reduce spending? Did they discuss no more bailouts for union businesses? How soon can we plan on Keystone construction to begin? Well, while they were yukking it up with the most dangerous president ever, Sen. Rand Paul was over at the Senate for nearly 13 hours trying to get a guarantee from the White House and US Attorney General Eric Holder that Americans on American soil would not be assassinated. Do you think a Republican will be elected president again? The answer is NO, unless the Elite Republicans accept that there are Independent thinking principled fiscal and social conservatives waiting to be treated with respect by the RINOs and “moderates With help from The Washington Post we learn: “In an interview with the Huffington Post, McCain referred to Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) and Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) as ‘wackos.’ McCain: “They were elected, nobody believes that there was a corrupt election, anything else, but I also think that when, you know, it’s always the wacko birds on right and left that get the media megaphone. To clarify, McCain said he was referencing “Rand Paul, Cruz, Amash, whoever. Gee, such a fuzzy feeling from the guy who got his

bleep kicked by a Community Organizer named Barack Hussein Obama. Watch out Sen. Ayotte the mud from McCain and Lindsay Graham might splatter your way. From Thehill.com: “They think the whole world is a battlefield, including America, and that the laws of war should apply, Paul said in an interview on Fox News about McCain and Graham, who had described Paul’s comments about drones as “ridiculous. Rand Paul told Fox News: “The laws of war don’t involve due process, so when they ask you for an attorney you tell them to shut up. That’s not my understanding of the way America works. I don’t think the laws of war apply to America, I think the Bill of Rights do and I think it’s a disservice to our soldiers that our senators up there arguing that the Bill of Rights aren’t important. ************** I asked during my program, what would our military do if Obama commanded them to quiet the dissenters and believers of our Constitution and Bill of Rights? Check this out: “I, _____ , having been appointed an officer in the Army of the United States, as indicated above in the grade of _____ do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter; So help me God. ***********

Where was Barack, half-brother to Abong’o Malik Obama, as Malik launched his political career in the homeland Kenya? The folks in Kenya knew better; DON’T elect an Obama. Obama said no more White House tours because of sequestration. One of my favorites, Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert tried to add an amendment to the continuing resolution that would prohibit our tax dollars from covering the travel cost for BHO to play golf. The New Hampshire House voted 207 to 163 to almost double the New Hampshire gas tax. Ways and Means Committee will hold a hearing on HB 617 Thursday, 3/14 at 1:30PM in Representative’s Hall at the New Hampshire State House in Concord. Please encourage the Committee to reject the almost doubling of the New Hampshire gas tax. This bill calls for increasing gas taxes 4 years in a row! It calls for increasing diesel taxes 6 years in a row! One of my Advocates colleagues: “The intellectual left is an oxymoron. There is nothing intellectual about leftist thought, it ignores reality and the laws of economics etc. Leftists don’t believe in freewill. One of the central observations of Eben Alexander in his book “Proof of Heaven is that God, Allah, The One, whatever you want to call it, wants humans to have free will. The left is against that concept, as are the Islamists. “Like I said before, its evil and the people who believe in it are therefore evil. They are anti-human. That may be jarring to some of you. Read the book, it will change your perceptions substantially. Amen.

erdance - The Show” in 2009 after auditioning at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin. After multiple tours with Riverdance, including a NBC Television Special: “Riverdance On Ice” he decided he wanted to teach the next generation of dance champions in his home state of New Hampshire. In 2010 John passed his Irish dance teaching certificate, the T.C.R.G., and he is a cer-

tified teacher with The Irish Dancing Commission in Dublin, An Coimisiun Le Rince Gaelecha. This year he opened the McDonough-Grimes Irish Dance School which now offers classes on Rochester and Dover. This is a unique opportunity to learn from a Riverdance cast member who is still active in their flying squad. (He was recently invited to dance in India in January of this year.) The school is named after his grandparents who came from Ireland; one from the west and the other from the east. “They came to New Hampshire with the hope of a better life. It’s my hope that I’ve done them proud with opening the McDonough-Grimes Irish Dance School,” said Grimes. Most of the current

Mother Nature has kept it coming with a few inches of snow falling every other night or so. This is the best time to encourage your friends who don’t ski to learn to ski. March makes me happy and it makes me a little sad. We often get

Pond Skimming and hiking up to ski Tuckerman Ravine are two things I am looking forward to doing. But I never trust April to be kind to snow for long. Top 5 Improvement Projects That Increase Your Home’s Value (StatePoint) Selling a home in today’s aggressive marketplace can be challenging. The good news is there are a few tweaks that can give homeowners a serious leg up on the competition. With the warmer months being the most active time of year to buy and sell real estate, it’s important to ensure your home is seen in the best light possible. “Despite the influx of homes for sale this season, the process of buying and selling a home can be simple, efficient and enjoyable,” says Wendy Froehlich of Homes.com, one of the nation’s top online real estate listing and lifestyle resources. According to Homes. com, the top five projects that improve home equity are:

to increase aesthetic appeal. If you’re on a budget, replace light fixtures or switch plates to help refresh the space. When working with a small space, highlight storage options with shelving and update or remove wall decor, paint or wallpaper.

Bathrooms If adding an additional bathroom isn`t an option, upgrade existing ones. Adding a dual vanity to a master or secondary bath improves functionality, allowing multiple people to use the space. Change out fixtures like faucets and shower doors

Outdoor Spaces Curb appeal adds immediate interest to any home’s exterior. According to Remodeling Magazine, improving outdoor spaces can increase a home’s resale value dollar-for-dollar. Frame the front walkway with items that add

Kitchen Kitchen renovations can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $40,000 and more. If that’s not in your budget, upgrading cabinetry and paint does wonders to liven up even the most outdated spaces. Add crown or decorative molding to “shape out” the kitchen cabinets and modernize the space. Repaint cabinets, or add new hardware to add visual interest and brighten dark spaces.

2012 Year End Winnipesaukee Waterfront Sales Report

27 Years In Business Meredith, NH 03253

603-279-7929 • www.gettyconstruction.com

by Roy Sanborn Contributing Writer

This has been a great year for waterfront sales on Lake Winnipesaukee! We finished out the year with a total of 130 sales on the big lake which is a 22% increase from the 107 sales posted in 2011! The average sales price bumped back up over the million mark at $1,017,367, up from the $994,688 posted last year. That makes me feel better physiologically I guess. The sales price averaged 89% of the list price at the time of the sale. Moultonborough had the most sales with 43 homes changing hands at an average price of $925,779 (that’s up from 32 sales last year). Wolfeboro had the highest average sales price at $1.6 million with 13 sales. That’s also up from the $1.2 million average for the 14 sales in 2011. There were 87 sales below the $1 million mark in 2012 compared to 69 in 2011. There were 30 between $1-2 mil, nine sales between $2-3 mil, and 4 sales over $3 million. I was a little surprised that there were only nine unbridged island property sales as we had eleven in 2011 with a fewer total

sales. But it is not surprising that the least expensive sale on the lake was on an island. It was a starter camp at 106 Cow Island. I’m not sure what a “starter camp is. It might be like a starter log used to start a real fire. Anyway, for just $100,000, some lucky new owner got a .25 acre lot with 100’ of frontage, a dock, plus a “work in progress 507 square foot cabin on the big lake that will probably provide as much fun and memories as a million dollar mainland property. Based the purchase price at only on 41% of its assessed value of $245,000 this owner got one of the

best deals on the lake in 2012! In looking at all the waterfront sales in 2012, the average sales price was 93% of the tax assessed value for those 93 homes out of 130 where the agent listed the assessed value in the MLS data.) The highest sale of the year honors goes to the property at 440 Edgewater Drive in Gilford on Governor’s Island. tom built-ins, and coffered and wood ceilings. Built in 2007, this fine home has 6,575 square feet of space, five bedrooms including a main level master suite and two en-suites upstairs, six baths, a country kitchen, private media room, four sided fireplace, library, private office, and two family rooms. There are multiple decks and patios outside from which to enjoy the views. The 1 acre lot has expansive lawns, 188’ of frontage, a sandy beach, docks, and a jetty. This property was listed at $4.395 million and sold for $3.5 million after 241 days on the market.

There were lots of good buys in 2012 and probably one of the better ones was at 48 Little Road in Meredith. This 5,872 square foot, shingle style Adirondack, has plenty

of room for everyone with five bedrooms, six baths, a great room with cathedral ceilings and massive stone fireplace, family room, formal dining room, in-law suite, and screened porch.

It was built in 1982 and nestled in the trees on a 2.53 acre lot with 265’ of frontage with a sandy beach, dock, and fabulous post and beam two bay boat house. This property

was listed $1.855 million, was reduced to $1.295 million, and sold for $1.15 million after 677 days on the market. The assessed value at the time of the sale was $2.08 million and has since been reduced to $1.48 million. So, 2012 was a great year overall for both sellers and buyers on Winni. The total sales numbers were up tremendously and the average sales price is a little better. So, we’re looking forward to a great 2013 on the lakes just because, as the saying goes, “they ain’t making anymore waterfront ya know... and we’ve got some of the best around!

Adult birds love to have their babies hatch into a soft, comfortable nest. The adults will continue to shelter hatchlings with their warm bodies well into the fledgling stage. They could also use a soft cushion to sit on. Nests made of branches and twigs can get a little uncomfortable over time. Just imagine how it would feel on your backside? You can help, however. At the start of each winter season, we tell our audience of civic groups

Your backyard birds have two things in mind this spring season. The first is establishing nesting territories. The second is choosing a mate. I will leave the mate choosing to the birds, let them have their fun. The nesting territories, however, are an area where humans can lend a hand. A successful nesting season is critical for each wild bird species to achieve. The lifespan of an average songbird in your backyard is 4-6 years. The mortality rate for newborns is about 60%. You can help your birds survive each egg-laying season by performing some simple steps. Keep pets in human control during the spring seasons. This can be accomplished using dog-runners, leashes or outdoor pens. Cats should remain indoors during this crucial time, as well. Use the broken tree limbs and branches from the winter season to create an impenetrable shelter for ground-nesting birds, such as cardinals. A brush pile on one corner of your property that

Mudroom Mudrooms ensure families stay clutter-free and have a dedicated space to drop stuff as they come through the door. They can also make potential homeowners feel welcome upon entry. While knocking out a wall to create a mudroom is expensive and laborintensive, you can make a “drop zone` by simply anchoring a bench to an empty wall and hanging labeled storage units. dramatically in the same society. Sometimes even a member of the same family may rise while a sibling stagnates or falls by the wayside. Ironically, many of the very people who are promoting the idea that the “unfairness of American society is the reason why some individuals and groups are not advancing are themselves a big part of the reason for the stagnation that occurs. The welfare state promoted by those who insist that it is society that is keeping some people down makes for many POit Boxunnecessary 737 ∙ Tilton, NH 03276 603-286-8008 ∙ www.lakesregion.org low-income people to exert themselves -- and therefore makes it unnecessary for them to develop their own potential to the fullest. PO Box 737 ∙ Tilton, NH 03276 603-286-8008 ∙ www.lakesregion.org The multiculturalist dogma that says one culture is just as good as another paints people into the cultural corner where they happened to have been born, even if other cultures around them have features that offer better prospects of rising. Just speaking standard English in an English-

speaking country can improve the odds of rising. But multiculturalists’ celebration of foreign languages or ethnic dialects, and of counterproductive cultural patterns exemplified by such things as gangsta rap, can promote the very social stagnation that they blame on “society. Meanwhile, Asian immigrants or refugees who arrive here are not handicapped or distracted by a counterproductive social vision full of envy, resentment and paranoia, and so can rise in the very same society where opportunity is said to be absent. Those “social scientists, journalists and others who are committed to the theory that social barriers keep people down often cite statistics showing that the top income brackets receive a disproportionate and growing share of the country’s income. But the very opposite conclusion arises in studies that follow actual fleshand-blood individuals over time, most of whom move up across the various income brackets with the passing years. Most work-

ing Americans who were initially in the bottom 20 percent of income-earners, rise out of that bottom 20 percent. More of them end up in the top 20 percent than remain in the bottom 20 percent. People who were initially in the bottom 20 percent in income have had the highest rate of increase in their incomes, while those who were initially in the top 20 percent have had the lowest. This is the direct opposite of the pattern found when following income brackets over time, rather than following individual people Most of the media publicize what is happening to the statistical brackets -- especially that “top one percent -- rather than what is happening to individual people. We should be concerned with the economic fate of flesh-and-blood human beings, not waxing indignant over the fate of abstract statistical brackets. Unless, of course, we are hustling for an expansion of the welfare state.

million each year. Fifteen cents would raise about $100 million per year (current gas tax receipts are $123 million). Merely following the current law to make sure the existing user fees are spent as advertised would add $28 million over two years before charging anyone anything more. So why the rush to raise taxes? Well, it might be because the prime sponsor of HB 617, Rep. Campbell (d) “gloated in an email “that the increase of the gas tax was “a gift that keeps on giving, and urged his fellow Democrats not to “spend it all

should have been on the hot seat for his intercepted email telling fellow committee members that HB 617 was â€œâ€Śthe gift that keeps on giving.â€? YUCK. Do I smell something foul here? YUP. Rep. Campbell’s response to that email was that his words were “taken wrongly by some people.â€? I don’t think so. It’s playtime with OUR money. This Gas Tax is at best, an irresponsible tax, allocated at the worst possible financial time. It will definitely hit our lower income citizens and families the hardest, forcing all to make even more difficult financial choices. A very bad bill, indeed. This bill will go to the NH Senate where some say it will be killed. (Call your state senators to KILL HB 617). But also, if you are a Republican, be sure to voice your disapproval to the above listed folks. Their votes have impacted ALL of us and they deserve to hear from the citizens of NH. Contact information can be found at: www.gencourt.state.nh.us

in one place. I’m by no means suggesting the five Rochester Representatives who chose to vote to increase the gas tax feel the same way as Rep. Campbell, but I would like to know why they went along with the idea if they knew all we needed to do is follow current law an apply the same level of funding to our roads and bridges as HB 617 does. If NH’s policy makers are going to continue to make unwise decisions they will simply delay efforts to dig out from the existing harsh financial times. I urge you to contact your representatives and let them know how you feel. I
