Comedy Night To Benefit Laconia VFW

Newly born kid goats, Tilly and Tobias, were surprises from one of Live and Let Live Farm’s goat rescues last fall.

Live And Let Live Farm Going Strong Heading Into Its 25th Year by Scott Philbrick Live and Let Live Farm

Well, here it is late March and a lot of people have been asking me about the next Live and Let Live Farm (LLLF) update in The Weirs Times, or what I

usually write up in January— a year end summary of the notable activities and goings-on at LLLF in Chichester, I readily admit I’ve been sorely remiss in my failure to bring forth news or updates to our followers and

supporters, and offer my apologies. “The farm” as we collectively call it, has been chugging along nicely since I last updated everyone last summer, and perhaps a bit like my LLLF summaries here, has been a fair bit quieter. But rest

assured, the good fight is being waged as strongly as ever. Perhaps the biggest news to relay to you all is that in October of this year, we’ll be celebrating our 25th anniversary of See FARM on 18

On Saturday, April 16th at 8pm, the Laconia VFW will present a Comedy Night to benefit the VFW. Appearing will be two great comics, Kenny Rogerson and Chris D. The evening will be hosted by Mike Smith. Kenny Rogerson is a favorite in clubs, theaters and on the large and small screen. You may have seen him as “Kevin the Biker Fireman” on F/X’s hit show “Rescue Me” starring Denis Leary and as “Pat the Cop” on ABC’s “It’s All Relative” with Lenny Clarke. He has also made numerous other television appearances on such shows as NBC’s , “Late Night with Conan O’Brien”, “The Late Show with David Letterman” and more. Chris D has appeared on Showtime, The Comedy Store in L.A, Laugh Factory, the Improv and the Boston Comedy Fest to name a few. Tickets for the show are $20 and $25. For tickets and reservations call the Laconia VFW at 603-524-9725. The VFW is located at 143 Court Street, Laconia.

To The Editor: Did you see what Florida Governor DeStantis recently did a few days ago? He declared the true female runner-up swimmer Emma Weyant, a Sarasota, FL native, the winner of the 2022 NCAA Division 1 Women’s 500yard freestyle race. A male swimmer that claims he’s a woman had a better time but he has bigger muscles and stronger lungs. There’s a much easier way to deal with all this transgender jujumagumbo for goodness sake! All we have to do is create a third category for all these confused and bewildered people. They should simply compete against themselves. The medals and ribbons they receive can be two-tone pink and baby blue. The meets and games for the transgenders can be held on different dates than the days the men and women compete. The transgenders will have the luxury of choosing one or the other empty locker rooms to change in as they’ll be empty. The more logical solution is to require a competitor to submit to genetic testing just like we do drug testing for professional athletes. If the competitor has two X chromosomes, she competes with the women. If the competitor has an X and a Y chromosome, she/he competes with the men. Listen, let’s be honest. We all know what equipment a man sports and what equipment a woman has when viewed in their birthday suits. If you’re confused about body parts, ask any

plumber about male and female fittings. Nothing about this is hard. Tim Carter Meredith, NH

Our Public Education System

To the Editor: Most Americans feel obligated to prepare each younger American generation to prosper and to carry on America’s founding principle, “that all men are created equal…endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights… Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness”. Helping to fulfil that obligation is the primary purpose of our Public Education System. Sadly, our Public Education System fails in this responsibility despite over 50 years of taxpayers responding to the school systems’ experts’ demands. Taxpayers provide higher wages, better benefits, smaller class sizes, increased special education funding, new technology, new facilities, additional administrators, etc. Yet, proving that the experts’ funding demands don’t solve our education problems, far too many children leave public schools without the basic skills needed for future success. Our nation’s Public Education System compares poorly versus other nations’ Public Education Systems. Various studies rank our education system as 22nd (https://tinyurl.com/2p84htxh), 13th (https://tinyurl. com/5n7bvazk), 20th (https:// tinyurl.com/423a698m). I found one study (https://tinyurl.com/

mzav2ava) that ranked us #1, but it acknowledged that our math and science achievements ranked 38th and 24th respectively. (MSN reports that a Gallop survey found that 20% of Americans believe the sun revolves around the earth!!) The US has only about 4 percent of the world’s population. American children need to be prepared to successfully compete against very bright, hardworking, and educated people worldwide. During the pandemic many parents were shocked at the content and teaching their children receive. Our students are taught self-esteem, protesting, Marxism (envy and laziness), White Supremacy, Black Lives Matter, and to question their own gender, but too many can’t read, think, or make change for a dollar. In desperation many parents home school, hire tutors, or pay for alternative schools in addition to paying their public school taxes. Like most monopolies our Public School System fails because it lacks incentives to improve. Senior citizens will remember how breaking up the high cost, limited option telephone monopoly of our childhoods brought the competition which provides today’s inexpensive and featurerich telephones. We don’t fund public schools just to provide jobs and sports teams; our obligation is to prepare students. We need freedom in education. Parents should be able to direct taxpayer provided education funds to best benefit their children. This will create a See MAILBOAT on 36

A Trip to Pittsburg Magalloway Road intersects Route 3 in Pittsburg, just about ten miles south of the Pittsburg/Chartierville border between the US and Canada. It took me a good two and a half hours drive from Franconia to get there. Natural snow is pretty much gone south of Pittsburg (with the exception of the ski slopes that are still covered with a combination of manmade and natural snow). I had looked at a webcam in Lopstick the day before and that is how I knew that there was still snow in the North Country. I was happy to see some snow banks as I went by Lake Francis. It is spring and the sun was hot and the mud was getting deep. Magalloway Road was plowed and a big logging truck and a log trailer were parked next to the No Parking Signs at the entrance. I parked on the shoulder of Route 3 in the wet deep mud right behind a couple of pickup trucks unloading their snowmobile trailers. I took out my skis, snowshoes and backpack from the hatchback of my car and I carefully and gently set them on the hood to keep them out of the mud. I chatted with the fellows from Southern New Hampshire that had driven all this way in hopes of getting one more

I had a wonderful winter adventure in Pittsburg, in New Hampshire’s Great North Woods, where snow lasts well into Spring. day of snowmobiling. It was obvious I didn’t have a snowmobile as I stood there with my skis. We were all looking for snow.

I don’t think many people ski or snowshoe on snowmobile trails because, well, there are lots of snowmobiles and it is the

same reason we don’t play in the street. I guessed that snowmobile traffic would be light because this See PATENAUDE on 32

Village Players Present “Farce Of Nature” WOLFEBORO - Wanelle Wilburn is convinced there is something fishy going on at the Arkansas fishing lodge that she and her husband, D. Gene, operate. Her husband’s secret phone calls with someone named Roxanne, his insistence on cleaning up the lodge and encouraging her to go shopping in town all lead Wanelle to these conclusions. And, in a way, Wanelle is right, there is plenty fishy going on, but it’s nothing like what she’s imagining. Welcome to the Reel ‘Em Inn, the aforementioned fishing lodge located in the remote wilderness of the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas, where things haven’t exactly been going well. And welcome to the Village Players production of Farce of Nature, opening April 1, in downtown Wolfeboro. Farce of Nature takes the stage on Friday, April 1; Saturday, April 2; Friday, April 8; Saturday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 10, at 2 p.m. at the Village Players Theater at 51 Glendon St. in Wolfeboro. Tickets are available at village-players.com. Because the situation with COVID is changing quickly, one week before performances, they will post the current COVID policy. If you have concerns about whether or not they will be requiring masks in the theater, please wait to purchase your tickets. Farce of Nature is generously sponsored by Bruce and Kris Gurall.

Easter Bunny At The Aviation Museum The Easter Bunny will arrive by chopper on Saturday, April 9 at the Aviation Museum of N.H., 27 Navigator Road, Londonderry, N.H. The eggs will be thrown overboard as the chopper hovers above the museum’s big grassy field, which will be cordoned off during the fly-over. After the candy is dropped and the helicopter clears the area, kids 12 and under will be allowed onto the field to pick up the chocolate eggs and other treats. Following the candy hunt, the Easter Bunny will return to the Aviation Museum at noon on a fire truck courtesy the Manchester Airport Fire Department. The Bunny will remain at the museum until 1 p.m. to meet fans and pose for pictures. *A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

HEADBAND Act Did you hear? The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a bill that would ban hair-related discrimination. I’m not kidby Brendan Smith ding. Weirs Times Editor The CROWN Act (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair), prohibits prejudicial treatment towards individuals on the basis of their hair texture or hairstyle. The bill now goes to the Senate. I don’t have any problems with this bill; any sort of discrimination is a bad thing. But if we are going to talk about hair and how it might cause discrimination against some people, congress still has a long way to go. That is why I have contacted my representatives to support my bill called The HEADBAND Act. HEADBAND stands for “Helping Eliminate Abusive Discrimination of Bald And Nearbald Dudes Let’s face it, I’m sure there is some deep-seated discrimination against some particular hairstyles by a few ignorant folks, but when it comes to those of us follically challenged, there isn’t any hiding it. It’s right out in the open. A lot of guys out there flaunt their hair privilege and look down on us bald guys. They don’t realize what we go through every single day while they fret about their first world hair problems. They complain about the grey that is starting to slowly replace the dark browns and blacks on their own heads, while we would happily take what they have, no matter what the color, and just be grateful. But it is more than that. It is the underlying current that we are not as good as them. Of course, they will deny it vehemently when confronted, even

going out of their way to treat us as equals, but we men of the chrome dome know what their real intentions are. For example, why are those men with wavy grains of hair always picked to sit by the streetside windows of restaurants for those walking by to notice, while those of us lacking in hair are always put back by the kitchen. (Take notice next time, this is a real thing. I see it all the time.) Even in the classroom, famous bald men throughout history are being ignored more and more, and the hairiest of our ancestors are being promoted as the only ones that matter. Lately a handful of bald guys with nothing else to do have been trying to introduce some classes into schools to teach how bald guys have been disparaged throughout history, but it has been getting a lot of pushback from parents with really nice heads of hair. We will see how it goes. Of course, U.S. history hasn’t been kind to bald guys, There have only been only three really bald presidents: John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren and Dwight Eisenhower. That’s out of Forty-Six. That is only 6.5 percent, while the population of bald men is a much bigger percent of that. In so many ways we are not being represented properly in the presidency or anywhere else that really matters. And what about the Supreme Court? Is the recent resignation of Stephen Breyer, the only bald man on the court, something more than is seems? Even Clarence Thomas, who is nearbald, was recently admitted to the hospital. Is there something more there than meets the eye? When the Brett Kavanugh hearings were being held, there was division on both sides as to whether his supposed actions as a young man might disqualify him. But we bald guys didn’t care about that; we were outraged by his fluffy head of hair. The odds of

him even showing a bald spot were nil. Would he ever rule fairly on discrimination cases involving hairless guys? We were, and still are, doubtful. Some say there is a secret cabal of guys with more hair than one man should be allowed to have whose aim is to eliminate bald guys? I have no definite proof, but I’m beginning to wonder. Of course, there are the outliers, those baldies who became successful, like Jeff Bezos and Rupert Murdoch, but they are few and far between and, some in our inner circle claim, are simply left to succeed to take the heat off of the hairy discriminators, leaving the rest of us, the millions of middle-class hairless, to our own defenses. (Of course, I refuse to side with those with great heads of hair who have decided to shave theirs off in solidarity. They are not really friends of the bald, but just players who are trying to show compassion for something they will never be able to truly feel. They can join the world of the hairy again whenever they wish. It’s not the same.) Getting the HEADBAND Act some traction has been tough up to this point. A march in support of HEADBAND this past February wasn’t as well attended as we had hoped since many left early since they forgot to bring hats and the weather turned colder than expected. A lot of bald guys think me and others like me are overreacting, that things aren’t anywhere near as bad as we are making it out to be. They think that the HEADBAND Act is a total waste of time when you consider all of the other problems we are facing as a country right now. But we are not going to back down. Stay tuned. Unsilencing Savanah

Savanah Hernandez, 25, is one of the most stifled young journalists in America. She’s intrepid, prolific and opinionated. But because she has relentlessly exposed the lies of Big Government, Big Business, Big Pharma and Big Alphabet (LGBTQIXYZ), she will never be embraced or promoted by establishment gatekeepers. Because she is right-thinking, right-leaning by Michelle Malkin and a proud America First advocate, you Syndicated Columnist won’t see her invited to appear on mainstream corporate media -- even though her videos have been viewed tens of millions of times over the past five years. Savanah first caught my attention several years ago when she bravely plunged into left-wing mobs to expose their hatred and violence firsthand. I’ve interviewed her for her work on Black Lives Matter riots and the impact of COVID-19 vaccines on fertility. Last week, Savanah was on the ground reporting from Georgia Tech’s McAuley Aquatic Center, where the NCAA swimming championships took place. She nabbed an interview with an outspoken Virginia Tech female athlete whose teammate was beaten by biological male Lia Thomas, the hulking “trans” competitor for the University of Pennsylvania wreaking havoc in collegiate women’s swimming. “It’s heartbreaking to see someone who went through puberty as a male, and has the body of a male, be able to absolutely blow away the competition,” the Vtech athlete told Savanah. “And you go into it with the mindset that you don’t have a chance.” Savanah’s interviews with the Vtech athlete and several other protesters and counter-protesters at the NCAA championships went viral across social media last week -- and were shared by top-rated cable news host Tucker Carlson. Savanah had been banned by Twitter in mid-November 2020 without explanation after President Donald Trump shared one of her multimillion-viewed viral videos. But she had created a second account for her independent podcast, “Rapid Fire,” to spread her solo investigative reporting. On Monday, she was banned again. I reached out to her for a mini-profile so that you can know more about this remarkable young reporter and how to find her work. Q: How many times have you been banned/censored/suspended from Silicon Valley platforms and otherwise silenced? A: Back in 2020, I had my original-reporting account banned on Twitter. It’s Time For The Market Pushback To Begin This week, The Walt Disney Company, which has approximately 200,000 employees spanning the globe, decided to radically reshape its politics in response to a tiny contingent of radical by Ben Shapiro activists. According to Syndicated Columnist The Wall Street Journal, Disney CEO Bob Chapek had steadfastly refused to embroil his company in the politics of the various states and countries where Disney did business; he correctly noted that the job of the company was to continue to make magic, not to do the political bidding of any favored coterie. Then, the state of Florida passed a law that would ban the indoctrination of small children into left-wing perspectives regarding gender identity and sexual orientation. And all hell broke loose. Senior Disney executives began circulating letters stating that the company opposed the Florida legislation, which opponents had falsely labeled the “Don’t Say Gay” bill (the bill doesn’t mention the word gay once). And some employees threatened a walkout if Disney did not reorient itself toward their favored political position. So Chapek caved. He sent a letter to staff stating, “You needed me to be a stronger ally in the fight for equal rights and I let you down. I am sorry.” He then pledged a listening tour, the formation of a task force to cater to LGBT priorities, and opposition to a Texas measure that would prosecute genital mutilation or hormonal sterilization of children. The company also committed itself to injecting its radical left-wing values in content, including “new content for children and family” infused with those values. According to reports, Disney even went so far as to commit to including a lesbian kiss in its upcoming

children’s film “Lightyear.” Chapek is caving because this is what left-leaning corporations do: they listen to their most outraged left-wing contingent, and then parrot them. Instead of giving an answer proper to an employer besieged by employees threatening a walkout -- telling the employees to get back to work or join the unemployment lines -- major companies simply surrender. Meanwhile, parents who simply wish their children to be entertained without being indoctrinated watch in perplexed horror as radical activists design content for their children. In order to combat this nonsense, those who oppose the hijacking of major companies by the Left must get organized -and they must create alternatives. That’s what we’ve tried to do at The Daily Wire. In 2021, Harry’s Razors withdrew their advertising on one of our shows, citing a “values misalignment.” What precisely was the problem? Our host had stated that men are men and women are women, and that sex is immutable. So, we fought back. This week, we launched Jeremy’s Razors, a razor company dedicated to the proposition that everyone, regardless of politics, deserves a good shave. We are here to provide you excellent products for you to use. And we will never slap our customers in the face thanks to the priorities of a woke few. That’s why our motto is simple: “Shut up and shave.” If corporations decide to go woke, there must be competitors who assure that they will go broke. And we hope to fill that gap. We only hope others will follow our lead. Ben Shapiro is a graduate of UCLA and Harvard Law School, host of “The Ben Shapiro Show,” and editor-in-chief of DailyWire.com. He is the author of the New York Times bestsellers “How To Destroy America In Three Easy Steps,” “The Right Side Of History,” and “Bullies.”

Renewable Failure The “Greens” promise renewables, solar and wind power, will replace fossil fuels. After all, the wind and sun are free, and they don’t pollute! by John Stossel Oops. Syndicated Columnist Now countries that embraced renewables are so desperate for power that they eagerly import coal, the worst polluter of all! Do they apologize? No. Greens never apologize. Germany was a leader in renewable energy, so confident in solar

and wind power that they closed half their nuclear plants. Oops. That leaves Germans so short of power that Germans are now desperate to buy fossil fuels from Russia. Even worse, pollution-wise, high pollution coal now tops wind as Germany’s biggest electricity source. That’s really disgusting. Then, even after putting all that soot in the air, Germans pay more than triple what Americans pay for electricity. For my new video, I confront German-born environmentalist Johanna Neumann of Environment America, a group that lobbies for

100% renewable energy. I point out that despite massive subsidies, her beloved renewables still provide just 12% of our power. She responds, “Saying renewables are not yet powering our utility grid is like critiquing a 2-year-old for not being able to run a marathon.” A 2-year-old? I don’t want to meet that kid. Renewables have been subsidized for 40 years, not two. “How we spend our taxes ought to be a reflection of our values,” Neumann adds. “Americans ... love renewable energy.” Yes, I suppose we do. We like the idea of it. I put solar panels on my roof. I’d be a sucker not to. Mas-

sachusetts takes money from other state residents to give me a tax break on solar panels. Still, in winter, when the sun is low, or my panels are covered by snow, I get nothing from my solar panels. What kind of energy solution is that? People need energy when it’s cloudy, too. They also need it when the wind doesn’t blow. “When the sun goes down ... offshore winds get cranked up,” says Neumann. No, they don’t! “The wind doesn’t always come up when the sun goes down,” I point See STOSSEL on 37

United Nations, Nato Isolate Russia On Ukraine The second salvo of diplomatic condemnation slammed into Russia as the UN General Assembly once again soundly and overwhelmby John J. Metzler ingly condemned Syndicated Columnist Moscow’s actions in Ukraine. The first Assembly vote came a few weeks ago condemning the Russian invasion; the second rebuke focused on the humanitarian catastrophe caused by Vladimir Putin’s aggression. In a resumed Special Emergency Session of the UN Assembly, “Humanitarian consequences of the Aggression against Ukraine” the resolution was adopted with the support of 140 states, 5 no’s, and 36

abstentions. The USA, Canada, all of Europe, Latin America, and much of Africa and Asia supported the landmark resolution. Significantly only Belarus, Eritrea, North Korea, and Syria, joined their fraternal Russian allies to vote against it. Notably as with the previous vote the usual suspects such as China, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Vietnam to name a few were politically AWOL again and abstained. Interestingly, Venezuela didn’t vote at all. Abstentions, the studied noncommittal style of many UN members, saw Sudan, South Africa among them as were the South Asian stalwarts India and Pakistan. Such strong support for a robust, albeit non-binding, resolution rebuking Russia is exceedingly rare! Putin’s war against Ukraine was a massive misjudgment, a total

misread of both Russia’s military capacity and Ukraine’s will to resist. Nonetheless the Russians, while bruised and bloodied, are probably not beaten. High losses, sloppy and chaotic command and control and attacks on civilians remain classic Soviet era/Russian tactics. This is not an army of elegant Napoleonic maneuvers but of slogging, grinding force which wears an adversary down. Yet proudly, Ukraine stands battered but unbowed. The singular humanitarian tragedy remains that the refugees and the physical damage inflicted upon this land, the breadbasket of Europe, which suffers and endures a Hell not seen since the Second World War. Again I repeat this is 2022, not 1942! The Russian attack seems to have

stalled and the Ukrainians are counterattacking! Moscow may be changing its strategy to concentrate military actions away from Kiev and refocus on the eastern Donbas region bordering Russia itself, ironically shifting back to where it all started! The UN asserts that more than ten million Ukrainians have become refugees or are displaced inside their homeland. Nearly four million people have fled initially to Poland, Hungary and Slovakia. From there on to Germany, France, and the United States. The internally displaced people are mostly in the largely safe western part of Ukraine closer to Lviv and the Polish frontier. More than half of Ukraine’s 7.5 million children are displaced or are refugees one month into the conflict. Russia’s rude wake up call has See METZLER on 37

Gray Matters On Grown-Up Temper Tantrums

by Leslie Gray, LCMHC

Gray Matters Counseling & Wellness

Oh, it’s a thing. The full-grown adult, having a full-blown meltdown. You might have seen it in the grocery store when the customer’s card is declined. It is evident on our roadways in the form of road rage

(Lord, help us). Maybe you’ve witnessed it partner to partner, parent to child, between coworkers, and so on. Our society has several ways to describe these outbursts: She had a fit, I lost my mind, she flipped her lid, he went berserk, what a lunatic, guy’s a maniac... You get the idea. Layman’s terms aside, what we are really talking about is when a person’s cognitive functioning pops a breaker in their psychological fuse box, causing them to regress to a child-state. They yell, scream, throw things, punch walls (or people). It explains why adults run each other over with their cars when they become irate: they have the maturity of a child with the physical capability of an adult. People often deeply regret these behaviors… after the fact. In the moment, however, they feel perfectly justified. So, what on earth is going on here? Nerd alert: to understand the phenomenon of the grown-up temper tantrum we have to understand a bit

about biopsychosocial development. This is the interplay of biology, psychology, and socialization which can be complicated by environmental factors, mental illness, and trauma. Current research shows that the pre-frontal cortex, the last part of the brain to fully develop, doesn’t come into full maturation until our late 20’s. This is barring any significant drug or alcohol abuse/misuse during those crucial developmental years. Ever know someone who is middle-aged but has the maturity of a teenager? This may be the result of their brain development flat-lining when they started using as a teen. (Imagine pruning the buds off a tree as it is blooming in the spring.) What’s the big deal? Executive functioning. It’s housed in the prefrontal cortex and is responsible for impulse control, emotion regulation, reasoning and judgement, decisionmaking, short- and long-term planning, to name several. The prefrontal is greatly impacted during moments

of high stress, alcohol/ drug use, being tired, hungry, sick, experiencing physical pain, during menses, and so on. In a properly developed brain, humans are able to experience emotions, even intense ones, while still maintaining access to their executive functioning. In other words, both can be simultaneously true: they can be really angry and are still completely in control of what they do and say. When an emotionally immature, underdeveloped, or impaired brain gets triggered, it can cause the person to regress to a younger state of functioning. After calming down, people will admit that they felt out of control, lost access to grown-up words, and felt like a child during the tantrum. They lose their ability to reason and be reasoned with. Don’t forget that the executive function goes offline for these individuals. During the tantrum, they might as well be a child trying to handle a grown-up situation. See GRAY on 28

Hope

by Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC. Contributing Writer

Anyone else feeling like things are not going great for us? I mean between inflation and needing a second mortgage to fill up gas tanks, it feels way too easy to just feel frustrated, angry, and maybe even hopeless. The thing is we are more resilient than we know or believe, both as individuals and as a country. We don’t break easily. We have to maintain hope. I think we throw that word around too casually like I hope the line at Dunkins isn’t long or I hope the Pats win the Super Bowl. Hope is technically defined as “a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen”. I think hope is more than just that. Hope is fuel, it’s possibility, it’s that thing that makes us keep pressing on against the odds. The desire to have something happen that we want or need can drive us to a higher level than we ever expected. I believe every person has at least some hopes, even in their darkest moments. A hope to get healthier, to get a better job, to lose weight, for our kids to be happy, for the car to pass inspection, etc. I think a case can be made for

hope as one of the most powerful feelings a human can have. I know it can be interpreted as fluff or hokey by some to focus on hope, but never discount the power of thought, of belief, of hope. Our minds and words are powerful, this is why it is important to always be conscience of the health of our thoughts. Hope is more than a powerful feeling or an internal motivator. There is evidence that hope can have can have real tangible effects on your health. For example, pain relief. In his book “The Anatomy of Hope”, Jerome Groopman states, “Belief and expectation…the key elements in hope…can block pain by releasing the brain’s endorphins and enkephalins, mimicking the effects of morphine.” Dr. Shane Lopez, author of “Making Hope Happen”, lays out many effects high hope levels can have on a person’s life: 1). Hope has been shown to decrease absenteeism at work. Whether you own the business or are the new guy at the job, you cannot afford to miss days. 2). Hope improves productivity. Obviously, this ties in to being present at work, but it goes deeper. Hopeful people tend to have more goals and energy to accomplish said goals. 3). Hope has been shown to be a predictor of happiness and satisfaction in life. 4). Hope affects aging and longevity. Yes, in terms of quality of life

via happiness, but also actual mortality. From Dr. Lopez on Psychologytoday.com. “Research shows that hopelessness is a strong predictor of mortality, and those folks who said they felt hopeless were more than twice as likely to die during the follow-up period than those who were more hopeful.” So that’s great and all, but the real question is...how are we going to become more hopeful. There are some obvious ways: 1).Find stress reduction activities (reading, meditation, etc.) 2).Take care of your health by exercising, sleeping enough, and eating well. 3).Create tangible steps (an action plan) to accomplish your hopes. There is one big one that may be less obvious: laughter. Texas A&M University did research in 2005. The study has participants watch a 15minute comedy video. Texas A&M psychologist David Rosen noted, “Those that viewed the video had statistically significant increases in their scores for hopefulness after watching it as compared with those that did not view the video.” So basically, feeling lost and hopeless, watch a comedy. Read a funny book, talk to a funny friend, do a “Mad Libs”, you get the idea. Ultimately, you are too valuable to live an unfulfilled life. If you have goals, desires, or dreams for your life, then these are your hopes. Chase them and don’t give up. If you can accomplish

CHIROPRACTIC... BECAUSE THE BODY HEALS ITSELF. more, it doesn’t just help you. It makes the world around you better. It makes you a better friend, parent, employee, or boss. It makes you more innovative, creative, healthy, and stress resistant. Doesn’t that sound like a community that you’d want to create and take part in? Sometimes if you watch or listen to the mainstream media, it’s easy to feel like the sky is falling. But it’s not and if we all cash in on our hopes, together we can push forward and get through anything.

Hearing Loss Leads to Lost Cognitive Function

Austin wants to tell you about a very important finding in medical research. Any decline in hearing results in declines in cognitive performance and brain function. Audiology Specialists provides cognitive screening that can measure some aspects of cognitive performance. This is an in-office, computerized screening. This is not an IQ test or list of questions. It is a simple, automated assessment that takes about ten minutes to complete. The results of this screening are not affected by hearing loss. The results help your audiologist determine which hearing aid is most appropriate and ensures your hearing solutions are right for you. The screening can be repeated at any time in the future to identify changes in cognitive performance. Please call for more information or to schedule an appointment at 603-528-7700.

Maintaining social connections is so cru-

Helping Ease Senior Isolation cial to the health and well being of our Senior loved ones. As they age, many seniors

find themselves with less community engagement and tend to feel isolated. This isolation has been magnified by the global pandemic. COVID-19 has affected all of us in one way or another, but for our seniors in particular, the seclusion and inability to see family and friends has had an adverse effect on their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. With the help of an in-home care agency you can reduce the challenges associated with isolation and help support seniors as they seek to remain engaged and having fun. Below are just a few examples of a “wellness based” approach to helping seniors avoid isolation and

remain mentally and physically active and emotionally supported. 1.Stay connected! Staying connected to our Seniors is paramount, whether it be phone calls or letter correspondence, through social media or FaceTime. 2.Spending time with familiar companions. For Seniors who live alone, time spent with family, friends or a caregiver can help alleviate feelings of solitude. For instance, together they can do a puzzle, work on a crafts project, play a board game, make a meal or watch a sporting event. 3.Spending time in nature. The positive effects of nature

Purpose, Meaning And Mindfulness In The Cultivation Of Spiritual Well-Being

by Kelly Chapman

Meredith Whole Living Center

In last month’s article I shared an overview of some of the research findings on the cornerstones of how to build a happier life based on findings done in the field of happiness studies. A key finding is that people are happiest and most resilient when they experience wellbeing in the aspects of their lives that create the acronym SPIRE, and they stand for Spiritual Well-Being, Physical Well-Being, Intellectual Well-Being, Relational WellBeing, and Emotional Well-Being. This week we’ll look at the foundations of Spiritual Well-Being, and ways we can improve ours. While many people find spiritual connec-

tion in religious experiences and beliefs, the focus of these findings are on our everyday lived experiences as humans regardless of religious affiliation. Specifically, how we experience and connect with meaning, purpose and engage with mindfulness. In regards to purpose and meaning, research based out of the University of Michigan revealed a useful framework to consider when thinking about how we’re currently experiencing and cultivating them in our daily lives. This research indicates that people generally connect to their daily activities in one of three ways- as a job, as a career, or as a calling. While no one studied fell into just one category all the time, there was a strong correlation between life satisfaction and how people most often perceived their work, whether it be their vocation, parenthood, or any other way they spent their days. Those who perceived their roles

as a job reported the highest amounts of dissatisfaction, and those who perceived their roles as a career connected with their roles more deeply and with a greater sense of purpose, but it was those who considered their daily work a calling who, across the board, found the greatest sense of deep meaning and purpose in their lives. Perhaps one of the clearest examples of these distinctions is told in a story the author shares of a tourist who comes across three men performing the same labor. When he asks them what they’re doing, their responses reflect each of these perspectives. The first man asked responds, “I’m laying bricks”, the second, “I’m building a wall” and the third, “I’m building a cathedral to the glory of God”. While each of these responses are clearly accurate based on the men’s individual perspectives on a shared task, the meaning they give to the task varies

drastically. Not surprisingly, those who connect to the greater meaning and purpose of their work are not only more deeply fulfilled, but also overcome adversity and challenges more readily, which contributes to greater success over time. The final takeaway from the research on Spiritual Well-Being is that the simple practice of mindfulness See CHAPMAN on 34

Today we find that New Hampshire towns,or districts made up of several towns, operate schools under the direction of a School Board and a Superintendent. In the year 1876 the towns were separated into numerous districts and the persons who were the overseers of schools were members of a similar superintending committee. In many towns it appears that it was a Prudential Committee that hired and governed the teachers. By law school committees of each town were required to prepare a report each year for the town, a copy of which was to be sent to the State Superintendent of the Common Schools. Copies were also to be made available to each family in the town. In this third article I’ve written about the 1876 schools and I will address some of the issues confronting the

The old Laconia High School. The NH cities obviously had school buildings with more rooms, etc. than the country school districts where they had mainly one- classroom schools. superintending committees and the Superintendent, if there was one. There was the issue of the districts into which the town was divided for teaching purposes. It was in 1797 that the town of Andover was divided into school districts, but in 1876 it was suggested that the town should “...throw up the district system, and adopt the town system.” The plan would be to consolidate the many districts into fewer schools where the students could be treated more equally as to the quality of learning experiences provided for them.

The State had asked towns to become one district in 1870, though that didn’t mean it had to have one school building. Even though this was talked about and advocated by some in 1876, and I don’t know when it became a reality in Andover, it wasn’t until 1950 that consolidation of the one-room schools in New Hampton took place. Bringing towns together to make larger “districts” or “unions” eventually happened, a move which some would now like to undo. In 1876 the town of Alton had 20 school districts with 21 different public schools.

Other towns had a large number of districts with Gilmanton having 18, Barnstead 15, and Meredith and Sanbornton having 14, though Meredith had a total of 16 schools. Gilford had 15 schools, and Laconia had 14 within its four districts. My home town of New Hampton had 13 schools but they averaged only 11.70 weeks of teaching compared to Laconia’s average of 25.58 weeks of actual classes per school. Dover had 40 schools with an average of 36 weeks of school in session, obviously outdoing the country schools. Ossipee had 21 schools, but they averaged only See SMITH on 35

Grafton County New Hampshire GOP March Meeting In Lebanon In Lebanon NH, Sunday March 20 a gathering of enthusiastic local Republicans was held featuring three movers & shakers: Two seeking New Hampshire’s voters to send them to Washington DC and one announcing current events at NH’s Dartmouth College. The gathering was one of the popular Grafton County Republican Committee (GCRC) monthly meetings chaired by Mr. Bruce Purlo. The GCRC is part of the New Hampshire GOP and has two Regional sub Committees which also hold monthly meetings. The Northern Grafton County Republican Committee and the Plymouth Area Repub-

He is walking the talk as his group has scheduled meetings across the county over the entire year. The complete schedule can be viewed on the GCRC web site: www.graftonnhgop. com. Lily Tang Williams candidate for US House in NH Congressional District 2 opened Sunday’s meeting. Lily has a special story to tell as she spent her formative years in Communist China. She immigrated to the USA as a young college student. Her personal story is truly amazing. However, having lived through life in a dictatorial environment she is now sounding warning bells to people in her new Country. She reports how shamelessly Democrats and

their leftist supporters in, big tech, social and corporate media incessantly parrot the Democrat-Socialist propaganda. One cannot hear her passionate presentation and not come away thinking we need a lightning-rod like Lily to represent New Hampshire in DC. One wonders what is to become of America if people like Lily do not gain office. Lily points out that her opponent is all-in with the debilitating, draconian, destructive policies being forced upon all Americans by current Democrat leadership. Kevin Smith candidate for New Hampshire US Senate presented his vision of a New Hampshire Senator as one who proactively addresses New Hampshire’s issues, unlike the current NH Senator(s). Kevin mentioned that his opponent has recently supported efforts to federalize control of national elections. Her strategy? Temporarily suspend the filibuster! Kevin told us that Democrat control of national elections would diminish (destroy) New Hampshire’s first in the nation position and eventually abolishing the Electoral College system entirely. Without the Electoral College system the big cities across America would be forever in charge of winners, and agendas. For the last 8-1/2 years, Kevin has served as the town manager of Londonderry, NH one of the state’s largest and most successful communities, where he has balanced the budget and reduced local taxes See GRAFTON on 34

Letters From God This series of Letters From God is an attempt to put the thoughts of God as revealed in the Scriptures as they relate to individuals and the nation of the USA.

Later in the 1960s you became more brazen and decided that though you had previously established every aspect of your national life on me and my book the Bible, you now needed to expunge me from every aspect of your life. You threw me out of your government and schools. You enforced a separation of Church and state that, up to that time, had never existed. It then became illegal to pray to me and to look to me for guidance and values. Imagine after hundreds of years of looking to me, praying to me, and basing your laws and behavior on my word and will, suddenly you became “enlightened” and threw me out. Around the same time, you determined that a day of rest and worship, a day of Sabbath, was passé and replaced it with sports, recreational activity, or just another day to work and make money. More and more Americans worshipped at the stadiums of their choice rather than places of worship to bow before me and to trust me to bless you. This descent would continue when you began to legalize practices that you had, since your inceptions, considered a violation of my word and will. You began to divorce at record levels. You sanctioned immoral and godless media smut. You truly became liberated and decided that my design that marriage was for one man and one woman and not multiple men and women weather heterosexual or homosexual should be altered. It

started with “don’t ask, don’t tell” and has blossomed into permissiveness of everything and anything. Now that everyone “does what is right in their own eyes” (Judges 17:6), there is no limit to what perversions of my design and will can be practiced. You have now even made it a hate crime to lovingly declare my word and standards for life. What can I say about your national leadership which, for the first time, began their terms in office in Washington by praying to other god’s at the start of their Congressional session and at the Presidential inauguration? What a slap in my face! You have become so foolish. You believe and act as though you are God and that I no longer exist. You think you can practice what you deem as right and acceptable with impunity. You have made a tragic mistake and miscalculation. I am still on my throne and the only reason why I haven’t brought judgments of severe consequences is because I have been giving you time to return to me. (“God reigns over the nations, God is seated on his holy throne.” Psalm 47:8.) Unfortunately, you haven’t turned toward me but instead farther away. If you would only open your eyes you would see that I have been removing my blessings and bringing my judgements. You are experiencing humiliating defeats around the world. Your economy is disintegrating. Your debt is astronomical. Your dollar

Letters From God

QUESTION: Everything Seems To Be Crumbling. How Can We Get Back To You And Your Values? Do you miss me yet? Your question at least gives a sense that you realize that you can’t live without me. It’s been a while since I have been able to provide all my resources for your country. I certainly haven’t allowed the worst that can happen to you yet, but because of your rejection of me I haven’t been able to provide the best resources that will continue to bring blessings instead of curses. I long to enrich your life. When I created the first man and woman they lived in a perfect environment. (“God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” Genesis 1:31) It was only after they chose to reject me and disobey me that they lost what was perfect and began to descend into death. (“for the wages of sin is death” Romans 6:23) It has been a number of years now that you have made the decisive move to walk away from me. The prosperity of the booming post-war years began to lead you to think that you could continue your prosperity without me. Though in that time, for the most part, you were a country committed to my word and my standards for life, you gradually and subtly turned away.

is growing weaker and weaker and your buying power is shrinking. Your educational system is failing and lagging behind many nations. This leads me to ask, “Have you missed me yet?” I warned you that in the last days of human history, shortly before the return of my son, Jesus the Messiah, most will become so hardened toward me that they will acknowledge me, but only to curse me. (“men…cursed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, but they refused to repent of what they had done.” Revelation 16:10-11.) You really don’t want to stand before me in this condition. Give thought to your ways and invite me back into your individual and national life again. I will remove any curse and provide every blessing.

to get a recent message from an old college teammate asking if I would play in an over60 basketball tournament this July. As those Brady-esque competitive juices still flow, I let him talk me into it. After a 15-year “retirement.” Heaven help us. Dorian Gray’s Faustian bargain ended badly. So might this July’s Old-Timers basketball tournament. Or maybe it will be a memorable “Last Hurrah.” Whatever happens, I’ll give Tom Brady the credit for my decision to end my basketball retirement. Or the blame!

by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

The story of Dorian Gray involves a young man who makes a Faustian bargain whereby he’ll never age. Rather, a portrait of him would age instead. One wonders if there’s there a portrait of quarterback Tom Brady somewhere with an image showing the ravages of time while Brady maintains his youthful mien—not to mention his athleticism? So twenty-two years after Brady first joined the New England Patriots he’s still playing football—and we’re still writing about him. The 44-year-old quarterback recently ended a short-lived “retirement” when he announced he would indeed return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the 2022 NFL season. Brady’s February 1 retirement announcement was superseded by the March 13 announcement that he was “unretiring.” I was surprised at the February retirement announcement, knowing that the fiercely competitive Brady earlier made it clear that he sought to do the unprecedented—aside from winning seven Super Bowls. He wanted to show that someone could star in the NFL into his mid40’s. Brady will be 45 on August 3. Brady’s 2021 stats

Tom Brady showed no evidence of physical decline. His total of 5316 passing yards was his best ever. His total of 43 TD passes was his second best ever. So why retire? The joke about his need to keep working due to the new inflation was funny but he made $40 million last year. He can afford $5 a gallon gas. Brady’s “retirement” saga is a reminder of questions that most of us must answer during our own life journeys. When should we retire? When should we start taking social security? When should we stop playing golf? When should we sell our houses and move to Florida? Some answers are easy. Others … not so much. If Brady stuck with his February announce-

ment he’d likely have been haunted by the notion that he retired too early. His March announcement means that such a haunting will not occur. Sometimes a QB stands behind the center and sees a defense that anticipated the play called in the huddle. So the QB calls “an audible” and changes the plan. Brady’s March announcement was kind of an “audible.” A basketball guy, I treasure my high school and college hoop memories, as well as wonderful men’s league and tournament memories from well into my 40’s— even if basketball didn’t earn me $40 million. However, the inevitable knee problems and arthroscopic procedures made “retirement” an easy choice. Still, I was surprised

Late March and early April can be a tough time for birdwatchers as we are in the slow build-up to spring migration. The spring migration actually starts sometime in February when the first male red-winged blackbirds arrive. It’s a nice sight (and sound) when they return to our swamps, but it’s pretty much just a tease as we know winter will continue, and it will be several weeks until other birds start to show up. American woodcocks and eastern phoebes return to New England around the middle of March. A few weeks later, ospreys arrive. The build-up can be excruciatingly slow for the eager birdwatcher who has had enough of winter and is ready for spring migration to really take off. In the next couple of weeks, the early warblers will arrive in our woods and, if we’re lucky, at our feeders. Pine warblers and palm warblers are typically the earliest to arrive, usually the first or second week of April. I have seen pine warblers at my suet holders plenty of times. I have never seen a palm warbler at my feeders, but they do nose around

Yellow-rumped warblers are the other warbler that will visit feeders, but they arrive a little later than the pines and palms. It is not until the last week of April that the spring migration takes off and hits full swing. That’s when dozens of warbler, flycatcher and vireo species fill our woods, along with colorful songbirds such as scarlet tanagers, rose-breasted grosbeaks and Baltimore orioles. But that is still ahead of us. For now, we can start looking for phoebes, American

woodcocks and ospreys, as well as a variety of ducks now that the waters are opening up. It’s also a good time to look for wild turkeys in the spring mating season. The other day, I watched a tom keeping about five other turkeys in line and displaying his impressive feathers. It’s also a good time to find shorebirds such as killdeer and piping plovers in New England. Killdeer, of course, may be found far from any shore in open areas such as parking lots and cemeteries. FARM from 1 ground breaking and starting our rescue & sanctuary home here at Paradise Lane, in Chichester, NH. Five short years later, curiously during the Chinese year of the horse, we became a 501-c3 charitable organization. We’ve been growing in capacity, volunteer force, and deed, ever since. I wouldn’t be surprised if we had some special events or activities planned to celebrate LLLF’s silver anniversary, so keep an eye on our website, our Facebook page, and of course here in The Weirs Times, as the year plugs along toward October. We are still maintaining an average of 75-80 horses, which remains the largest slice of the LLLF pie, both in terms of volunteer hours and ongoing costs; the cost of hay alone has doubled in the past few years. We have been taking in an inordinate number of goats as of late, currently fifteen to twenty or so, but it’s difficult to say for certain, as they’re always coming in, being rehabilitated with up-to-date vaccines, cleansing of parasites,

Rescued mule enjoying some warm days with Heather. and microchipped as needed, then adopted back out, all on somewhat of a regular basis. Because of Covid, our adoption events coordination and off property events have been minimal, with most all adoptions of dogs/puppies and cats/kittens (and other animals, of course) being conducted on a one-to-one basis, coordinated via email and telephone. We are however, greatly looking forward to resuming our Sunday tours at 2:30pm, as well as our normal farm life

that we so often and for so long took for granted, in the near future. Our volunteer numbers have been trending downward in the past year or two, mainly because of the restrictions on group gatherings for our Sunday tours, and new volunteer trainings being one on one. While the regular number of volunteers we lose has remained relatively static, the number of new volunteers rotating into the ranks has dropped significantly. So watch for updates See FARM on 19

Inside and outside views of Live and Let Live Farm’s new Poultry Palace. FARM from 18 regarding the tours on our website or Facebook page. A long time goal of Teresa Paradis, “The Poultry Palace” has finally come to fruition, and is a pretty big hit with the brood of chickens and various other poultry that populate the LLLF rescue farm. This was an ideal and much needed smaller project, due to the difficulty in raising funds, as well as procuring building materials for the much needed large adoption & rehabilitation center, with maternity unit for dogs, cats, and orphaned animals. This enormous building project will be put on hold until more funds can be raised, and general building materials become more readily available in larger quantities, and when prices hopefully come back down a bit. Until then, we’re focusing on smaller projects, such as the Poultry Palace. A few other bits of news worth mentioning… let’s see. Capitol Craftsman Jewelry, located on Main St. in Concord, has had a donation jar on their counter for several years now, in which about $100 a month is donated to LLLF. You

“Milo The Barn Cat” the story of a cat raised by Live and Let Live Farm and adopted into a wonderful family. may have seen reports of this on WMUR Channel 9 news, or other local news sources, but someone swiped the jar! Guess he or she decided they needed it more than we do. Se la vie, right? As we were coming into the winter months of 2021, two urgent situations emerged in which owners became too ill to be able to fully care for their animals.

In the North Country, a woman on her third battle with cancer requested help with her horses, lamas, alpacas, doves, and a few other precious companions, to include a Haflinger horse named Mikala, as well as her mother, Ginger. Sadly, the woman, in her third round of chemotherapy, simply could not provide the care necessary for all these

animals, and LLLF is pleased to be able to be the soft landing for her precious babies. The very next day LLLF rescue was off to the Southern NH border for another situation, just as dire and just as tragic, in which our help was needed. Two mules, a pony, and a donkey needed urgent rescue, and LLLF was there to provide sympathetic and compassionate transport and rescue. From one of our goat rescues last fall, our little bundles of joy, Tilly and Tobias, born in February to mama Fearless— helped start a brighter 2022. You don’t know fun till you’ve played with a baby goat! Slowly, our public events are returning; LLLF has once again been invited to the “Made in New Hampshire Expo,” so please

come join us at this fun and wonderful event at the Double Tree by Hilton, in downtown Manchester, Friday April 8, Saturday April 9 and Sunday April 10, 2022. We hope to see you there! A big shoutout and thanks to Funspot of Laconia for recently hosting the FUNds4Paws triathlon event, which raised over $42,000 for NH animals in need, and another huge thank you to FUNds4Paws for their donation to LLLF, and continuing support. It’s truly a blessing to be a part of such a great state and wonderful community of animal lovers. I’ll close with a rather nice story, but it will leave you hanging— a “teaser” of sorts. It’s the story of Milo, a marvelous cat rescued by, and then adopted out some time ago,

from LLLF. You can read all about Milo in the children’s book (although adults will love it too), “Milo the Barnless Cat,” written from Milo’s own point of view, by Debra Manus Love. It reveals Milo’s account of being rescued and brought to LLLF, and then adopted by Debra and her family, where he recounts his subsequent experiences and adventures in his new home, with his new forever family. Debra has kindly agreed to donate a portion of the proceeds from the sales of the book to the farm, so as you’re reading of Milo’s exploits and adventures you can have the added joy of knowing that you’re helping LLLF. “Milo the Barnless Cat,” can be purchased through Amazon, and is available in hardcopy and See FARM on 34

Start This Year’s Garden Preparation With A Soil Test by Melinda Myers Growing a beautiful landscape starts with the soil under your feet. The best place to start building a healthy soil foundation is with a soil test. The results will tell you what type and how much, if any, fertilizer is needed for the plants you are growing. Using the right type and amount of fertilizer is also good for your budget and the environment. Test the soil when starting a new garden or one that is struggling. Since soil and fertilization practices vary greatly, collect and submit separate samples for each garden bed or landscape area to be tested. Repeat every four or five years to check on your

garden maintenance. You can take a soil test anytime the

ground is not frozen and you have not recently fertilized. Early spring and fall are good times since you can make needed changes when preparing your garden. Contact your local Extension service for details on submitting a sample. If they don’t have a soil testing lab, they will likely recommend a state certified lab that tests home lawn and garden soils, or you can search the internet for a certified lab near you. Taking a soil test sample is simple. Use a clean trowel and bucket to gather a soil sample. Slide away any mulch or debris on

the soil surface. Use a trowel and remove a slice of soil that is four to six inches deep and right where the plant roots grow. Take several samples throughout the garden you want to test. Collect samples from each edge and several throughout the middle of the bed. Mix them together and place about a cup of the soil in a plastic bag or the one provided by the lab. Be sure to complete and include the submission form. This includes a place to list the types of plants that will be grown in the area being sampled. The lab uses this and test results to make See MYERS on 25

What To Know About Mold And Mildew

(NAPSI)—If you’re like a lot of homeowners, your domicile is in danger from an insidious, invisible growth— mold—and you don’t even know it. That’s because for many people, mold conjures up images of smelly, green and black growth that can cause serious respiratory issues. It is often found in a home after an intrusive water event, such as a flood or a severe rainstorm. The reality is, just about every home has mold, though it only becomes a concern when there are moist building materials and you begin to notice visible mold growth and can smell it. Why To Fight Mold Mold and water damage can have a negative effect on your and your family’s health, as well as on the safety and

structure of your home. People with allergies to mold may experience sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, rash and upper respiratory problems. Homes in areas where there’s a potential for flooding, tornadoes, or hurricanes are especially at risk. Mold typically grows in damp places such as basements and crawlspaces. Apart from floods, the four major causes of mold and water damage in residences are: leaks in the building envelope (that is, around window frames, roof); unattended plumbing leaks; high humidity levels (particularly from unvented or improperly vented indoor moisture sources, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and clothes dryers); and condensation on cool surfaces (on kitchen

and bathroom surfaces, on window frames, in basements). How To Fight Mold The good news is there are steps you can take to identify and remove mold, and prevent its re-occurrence by keeping the water out of the house. AIHA (formerly American Industrial Hygiene Association), the organization for scientists and professionals committed to preserving and ensuring occupational and environmental health and safety (OEHS) in the workplace and community, created free resources for consumers including: “Facts About Mold: A Consumer Focus,” a downloadable guide to the problems of mold growth and what you can do to prevent it; and a brief video, See MOLD on 27

Spring Cleaning: Is Your ‘Junk’ Worth a Fortune? (StatePoint) If your family is like most, you have “junk” in your basement, garage or attic, such as sports cards, memorabilia and toys. Before you toss them out during spring cleaning, consider that the prices of sports cards, games and other ephemera are skyrocketing. How can you determine if your stuff is valuable and, if it is, how can you sell it? A widely accepted rule for sports cards, memorabilia and toys is that older items are worth more. However, these days even more recent items are also commanding high prices. “Vintage sports cards from the early periods of a sport are almost always highly collectible, especially of Hall of Famers,” says Al Crisafulli, Auction Director at Love of the Game Auctions, an internet sports and memorabilia auction that helps families sell collectibles. “But don’t assume sports cards or other memorabilia have to be old to be valuable. Modern cards of such stars as Tom Brady, Mike Trout, LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter and others can sell for lots of money.“ He is offering tips to help determine if your belongings are valuable: Older Sports Cards

Cards from the 1960s and earlier are collectible, and those from before the 1940s can be extremely valuable. Big-name Hall of Famers like Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig, Honus Wagner, Mickey Mantle and others bring high prices. With old cards from the 1880s and early 1900s, look for tobacco and candy brands, such as Old Judge, Piedmont, Sweet Caporal or American Caramel. Really old Sports memorabilia from the 19th and early 20th Century, such as photographs, postcards, bats, gloves and balls are also collectible. When opting to sell sports items, consider a specialty aucSee JUNK on 27

MYERS from 22 the fertilization recommendations. Send the sample and form together to the soil testing lab. Allow several weeks for the test to be completed and the results to be returned. Most basic soil tests report the amount of phosphorus and potassium in the soil. Phosphorus promotes flowering, fruiting, and root development. Potassium promotes drought tolerance, disease resistance and hardiness. Many soils are high to excessive in these plant nutrients. You cannot remove the excess but should avoid adding to the problem. Soil test reports can help you do just that. Most labs do not measure the amount of nitrogen in the soil since the levels change quickly and are not easy to test accurately. Instead, they make nitrogen recommendations based on the plants you are or will grow in the area being tested. Soil pH is also measured in most soil tests. Acidic soils with pH below neutral (7.0) are often referred to as sour, while alkaline soils with a pH above 7.0 are called sweet. Soil pH influences which nutrients in the soil are available for the plants to absorb and utilize for growth. Blueberries, azaleas, and red maples are examples of acid-loving plants. Clematis, crabapples and spireas are a few of the alkaline tolerant plants.

Always use soil test results when trying to change the pH. Lime is used to sweeten soils while sulfur is often used to lower pH. Using too much or the wrong amendment can negatively impact the health and productivity of your garden. Undoing misapplications can take years to correct. Growing plants suited to the soil pH may be the best solution for those with acceptable, although not ideal, soil pH. Include soil testing

when planning new gardens or helping those that are struggling. Understanding your soil can help you create a strong foundation important to the health, longevity and beauty of your gardens and landscapes. (BPT) - As many Americans have traded their work commute for a home office, interest has focused on creating more comfortable remote workspaces. Ergonomic furniture, acoustic soundboards and high-speed broadband technology are a few investments designed to make working at home more comfortable. But an overlooked opportunity for improving comfort exists in every room: a home’s air. Temperature, humidity and particulates in indoor air can all threaten comfort. And given that the average person spends 90% of their life indoors, the quality of a home’s air isn’t regulated to working hours. Following are five ways to support a higher level of comfort in every season.

1. Get Your Ducts In Order. While today’s HVAC systems are highly efficient, even the most advanced heating or cooling technology will not deliver its full value if attic ductwork is compromised. EnergyStar reports that an average home loses up to 30% of the air that moves through its duct system due to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts.1 Tom Casey, chief visionary officer with Griffin Service and a frequent presenter at HVAC industry events, says ductwork can be the ultimate indoor air quality accessory. “You won’t address the weakest link in a home’s HVAC system if particles from attic ductwork are simply filtered and blown out from the attic ducts through the registers again,” he says. “You’ve got to tackle the root cause.” 2. Assure Adequate Attic Insulation. More than 90% of homes are

under-insulated, falling short of current DOE guidelines for energy efficiency.2 Attic insulation provides an effective resistance to the flow of heat from warm into cool parts of a home. Adequate levels of insulation can help keep hot attic air from infiltrating the conditioned area of a home in summer; and restrict heated air from entering the attic in winter. 3. Practice Good HVAC Hygiene. Change your furnace filter according to the manufacturer’s directions and visually inspect your filter monthly. If the furnace filter is covered with dust, changing the filter is a good idea even if it has not reached the end of its anticipated lifespan. Not only will this support home comfort, changing the furnace filter regularly will result in less wear and tear on HVAC equipment.

4. Look For Warning Signs. Debris around a register or increased dust in the home can indicate an HVAC problem. Similarly, higher energy bills are a sign that air may be escaping due to holes in a home’s ductwork. Mentioning these issues during routine service visits can help trouble-shoot issues that threaten comfort and energy efficiency. 5. Think “Whole House.” Pearl Certification, a leader in energy certification, has partnered with the Owens Corning® AirCareâ„¢ Contractor program to support a “whole house” approach that goes beyond equipment to evaluate and certify high-performing indoor environments. Selecting an AirCare Contractor and certifying a home’s HVAC system brings a level of objectivity to assessing a home’s comfort and efficiency.

JUNK from 24 tion, such as Love of the Game, which has the expertise to professionally research sports items and maintains lists of bidders specializing in this area, to get top dollar. More information is available at loveofthegameauctions. com. Modern Cards Prices on recent baseball, basketball and football cards have risen rapidly. The three keys are condition, star power and cards from early in player careers. Do you have major current stars, like Mike Trout, Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady and LeBron James? Or do you have greats from the recent past, like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, Derek Jeter or Joe Montana? Check if your cards are denoted as Rookie, Prospect, Draft Pick or other indicators they’re from a player’s first season. And con-

dition is king, as cards that look pack fresh with sharp corners and a well-centered image command highest prices. Additionally, unopened packs and boxes from almost any year can be valuable. Memorabilia Do you have old advertising posters depicting sports stars or famous entertainment

personalities together with food, tobacco or sporting goods brands. Many original signs, store displays and promotional items are collectible, especially those dating from the early 1900s into the 1960s. But low-quality reproductions aren’t. Look for memorabilia spotlighting sports heroes, superheroes, early Walt Disney characters and Star

Wars subjects. So, while you’re spring cleaning that attic, basement or garage, don’t rush to the garbage. Before throwing out old “junk,” determine if it’s valuable!

Landscaping Tips For Instant Curb Appeal (StatePoint) One of the best ways to achieve instant curb appeal, according to the experts, is to effectively layer shrubs, plants and flowers in your front yard. Doing so can create a cohesive visual experience that naturally guides visitors to the front door. Landscape designer Doug Scott describes plant layering in art terms: “Just like in a painting, you need to have a background, a middle ground and a foreground. Each layer serves a purpose, and there’s no more important place for them to be on full display than your home’s entrance.” To help homeowners understand the purpose of plant layering and identify the best types of plants for each layer, Scott has joined forces with Exmark, a leading manufacturer of commercial mowers and equipment for landscape professionals and serious DIYers. Here they break it down for you: 1. Background: The background layer should consist of taller evergreen shrubs to ensure that no matter what’s in front of them, you and your visitors will always have something green to look at. This layer provides a cohesive backdrop and a bit of living color in every season. 2. Middle Ground: Here’s where to step it down a notch in

height and add interesting shapes, colors or stripes that provide contrast against the darker green of the background layer. Herbaceous perennials, like lavender, are a good choice for this purpose. 3. Foreground: Finally, the foreground layer should help transition the planting beds to your lawn space or sidewalk, and should therefore be lower than the back two layers. It’s also where you can keep things fresh and get your hands dirty throughout the year by changing out annuals with the seasons. Or, if you want a lower-maintenance entrance, you can choose smaller perennials, evergreens or creeping ground covers. Use the foreground layer as an opportunity to add

pops of color at ground level and draw attention to your home’s entrance. Scott lays out a few other important tips to keep in mind: • Choose plants consistent with your home’s style. For instance, if you have a craftsman home, you should probably skip tropical plants. Or, if your home is more minimalist, avoid an overabundance of different plants. • Don’t obstruct views of your front door from the street with plants. Likewise, visitors shouldn’t have to maneuver around plants as they make their way down the sidewalk. Neither is convenient or welcoming, so you’ll either need to keep pruning plants to size, or See TIPS on 34

BOSAK from 17 are strictly shoreline nesters. It’s also worth noting that woodcocks are considered shorebirds but live in the woods. I’ve heard the woodcock alternately called timberdoodle before, but I recently learned that they are also nicknamed bogsucker, hokumpoke, mudsnipe and Labrador twister. That’s a lot of colorful nicknames for one bird. I have been trying for years to get a photo of an American woodcock, but it is a species that eludes me at every attempt. I have seen and heard their aerial displays at dusk several times, but by then the light is too far gone to get any photographs. I have tramped through the woods during the day in the middle and end

PATENAUDE from 3 time of year most have traded their machines in for wheeled vehicles and garden tools. The snowmobile trail was on the south side of the muddy road and the snow was dirty and thin. I hoped the snow would be better the further west I skied. From Route 3 to the crossing of the Connecticut River between the First and Second Connecticut Lakes it is mostly downhill. My skis moved slowly in the sticky snow and hitting rocks didn’t help my speed. I had to take my skis off to walk across the bridge. The plowed road turned left and the snow ahead on Magalloway Road now looked much better. With a mile behind me now I would be skiing

Mile marker 5 on Magalloway Road. Look at all that snow! Only a couple dozen snowmobilers passed by me the whole day. Nearly everyone waved to me and all were polite and went by at a safe speed. Many consider Pittsburg to be the “Snowmobiling Capital of New England” with over 200 miles of groomed trails that connect to Vermont and Maine. Pittsburg averages over 170 inches of snow each year.

Don’t give up--many ski areas are still open! Yours truly, Steve, Jeremy, Bria and Danielle met up for a fantastic day of sunny Spring skiing at Saddleback Mountain in Maine. Don’t delay, now is the best time to buy next year’s season pass at your favorite resort or resorts--Winter will be back after this coming Fall.

uphill the next five miles climbing about a 1000 vf. My backpack felt heavy with my snowshoes, two liters of water and plenty of food and extra clothes. It wasn’t fast skiing like at a touring center. Snowmobiles don’t leave smooth tracks and they make the top layer extra mushy. I was happy to ski, it was certainly faster than and more fun than snowshoeing the whole way. The sun was bright. I wore a ballcap and wished I had put sunscreen on my face and bare hands. Every mile there is a yellow mileage marker. When I passed by the number 4, I waS extra happy because mile marker 3 was missing and I knew I wasn’t going that slow. I was out here on this second to last full day of winter to climb Diamond Ridge. Diamond Ridge, elevation 3,230 feet is a mountain on the New Hampshire Highest 200 list. It See PATENAUDE on 33

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, March 31, 2022 — I had skied and snowshoed a little over 14 miles in just under 5 hours. The funny thing was as I was walking up to my car and the guys parked in front of me had just finished their ride. One took off his helmet and said to me, “Good timing.” What were the odds that we’d all start and finish our day in Pittsburg at the same time. Have fun.

Oh No the snow is melting! Near Route 3 Magalloway Road was plowed and muddy and the snowmobile trail is right next to it. The day’s hot sun and snowmobile activity really took its toll. PATENAUDE from 32 is Magalloway Mountain’s neighbor to the north. I completed this list years ago but this time I am working to do it in calendar winter. Yah, winter lists are a “thing.” In the summer it is easy to drive your car to the base of many of these trailless peaks. In winter often the biggest challenge is getting to the start of the bushwhack. Just as I did summers ago I started my bushwhack at about 6 miles at a logging road spur just south of the highpoint of the ridge. I skied up for a few minutes and removed my skis and put on my snowshoes. As soon as I stepped off from where the snowmobiles had traveled my snowshoes sunk deep

into the soft snow. Each step I didn’t know whether I’d sink down 6 inches or a foot plus. From here I had a mile and a thousand feet to climb to get to the top. I caught myself wishing I was here on a cold day when my snowshoes would have floated on top of the snow. I wove my way through hobble bush and young brushy hardwoods through a section of an old timber cut. As I climbed higher I passed through mostly open hardwoods. I had some nice views of Mount Magalloway and its snow covered scree field where snowmobiles now rode on its slopes. I saw three deer staring at me and I think they were convinced

that I didn’t know they were there. I was surprised how close they allowed me to get to them before they dashed off. Once on top, I enjoyed a nice peanut butter and honey sandwich and guzzled more of my water. I had some obstructed views to the east and south that I made an effort to enjoy on the heavily wooded summit. There were moose tracks on top too. I followed my snowshoe tracks back down and in the soft snow it felt like I was breaking trail all over again sinking down even more. By the time I got back to my skis a big dark cloud had rolled in and I worried it might rain. Back on my skis I

really enjoyed gravity between mile markers 5 and 2. It was the steepest section of Magalloway Road I had skied. It almost felt like cheating. Somewhere between miles 2 and the river I found a Leatherman Tool in a case and tossed it in my pack. I didn’t see any other lost items nor any trash. By the time I returned to the bridge over the Connecticut River the snow had melted to the point it was now not skiable. I couldn’t walk on the muddy road so I had to walk in the slushy dirty snow and half frozen mud of the snowmobile trail uphill out of the river drainage. I was able to ski the last half mile back to Route 3.

Keene High School around 1876. SMITH from 13 12.92 weeks of operation during the year. Another big issue for schools in the nineteenth century was the need of purchasing supplies. Moody B. Haynes of Pittsburg, N.H., took what he called a liberal view by asking that each district in his town procure a small globe for their school, and that the town purchase a large globe to be shared by the districts. of which there were seven. He also asked for a blackboard for each school. A blackboard was as important to school teachers in the 1800’s, and after, as a computer is to teachers today. Hosea B. Snell, superintending from the town of Lee had a list of “apparatus” every schoolroom should have. His list included ‘..a clock, dictionary, a chart of the vocal elements of the English language, a globe, and a series of out-line maps, cube root blocks, mottoes, diagrams, etc.” A Londonderry superintendent stressed the importance of good manners in the schools, saying that “Children should be taught good

behavior, a conscientious regard for the rights of others, and to practice the little courtesies of life in their intercourse with each other. The good oldfashioned Yes, sir, and No, sir, ought not to be mere relics of the past.” Consider the rules established by Madison Superintendent Nicholas Blaisdell : 1. “School-rooms shall be kept warm and clean, and teachers may require scholars to build fires and sweep the school-room. 2. Scholars shall be in attendance at the commencement of the school in the morning and at noon, and no scholar shall be excused from school without a reasonable excuse. 3. No scholar shall be guilty of any rude, indecent, or disorderly conduct in going to or returning from school, or in or about the schoolhouse. 4. No scholar shall repeat any lewd, obscene, or profane word in or about the school-house, or in going to or returning from school, or write or mark in any manner, any obscene or profane word, or obscene or lascivious figure.

Booklet about Littleton Grade School in 1876-77. 5. No scholar shall throw stones, snowballs, or other missiles, or play at ball, or bring sleds, or slide on the road or in the vicinity of the school-house. 6. No scholar shall use, in any manner, rude or disrespectful language to the teacher, or any other persons not members of the school. Some many years after these rules were made and my home town still educated in district one-room school-houses I think I kept most of these rules, but some of them I broke. There were occasions when I followed directions and built the fire in the morning before school began and probably did some sweeping of the school-house

floor. Rule # 5 was the one that wasn’t completely required at our school. It wasn’t a violation to bring sleds to school; in fact, there were days in which it was possible to slide by sled down the road

most of the way from our home to the schoolhouse. There were times when we would slide on the road during recess time or after lunch and the teacher would be out to stop what little traffic there was on the road during the sled runs. There were times when snowballs and other missiles were thrown. I’m sure that throwing stones was not allowed, but almost as sure that there were times when that rule was broken. The superintending people had to decide what subjects would be taught at school. In 1876 New Hampshire schools taught reading, spelling, writing, arithmetic, grammar, geography, and United States history. Bookkeeping and drawing were taught in some schools. Schools had text books, but some officials complained that their pupils had to use books by different publishers rather than having matching books on the same subject. Gilford prudential committees were advised to exercise great care in the selection of teachers, choose teachers who could govern as well as instruct, to pay good wages, and to visit the schools.

MALKIN from 6 BLM and antifa for their rioting and violent tactics. During my reporting of Austin, Texasbased antifa, 10 people mobbed and robbed me for reporting on their illegal activities (first time I was silenced in real life). In November 2020, Trump retweeted my clip from the Million MAGA March of everyone peacefully singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The clip surpassed 8 million views, and three days later, Twitter deleted my entire account without any explanation. I started an account for my podcast and then started using it to showcase my reporting. I was the first to get an interview with an NCAA athlete regarding the truth about Lia Thomas. The clip made it on Tucker and

amassed over 1.8 million views. Twitter deleted the account this week for “ban evasion.” On Instagram (@ savwith1n), Savanah’s clips of peaceful Trump supporters at the Jan. 6 rally were removed for “violence and promoting hatred.” Instagram is “now going back to my posts from six months ago,” Savanah told me, and deleted her video featuring a collegiate athlete who suffered myocarditis. “Not sure how many more posts can be banned before they take the full account.” On YouTube (Sav Says), Savanah told me: “I started my own show called Rapid Fire. I’m currently on my fourth strike. If I get one more, I’m permanently suspended. My first three strikes coincided with me calling out the

COVID vaccine.” Her latest show, “calling out NATO, Ukrainian corrupting and the biolabs (before it was mainstream news) ... was again censored for ‘medical misinformation.’” Q: Does free speech still exist in America? A: No. And this isn’t just about Big Tech censorship. I went and stood with a sign that read “Police Lives Matter/Say his name-David Dorn” during the BLM riots of 2020. I was attacked multiple times. You can’t stand on a street corner or go to a leftist event and ask simple questions without being attacked, silenced and harassed. I recently went to a “protrans surgery for kids” rally. The protesters didn’t like my politics, so they mobbed me, called me a fascist and

poured water on my phone. Q: You’ve chosen the more difficult path of remaining truly independent. How did you arrive at that decision, and what are the biggest obstacles to sustaining an independent media career/ presence? This industry is filled with a lot of fake people who are only in this for money and fame. A seldom few actually care about the truth. I want to make sure I’m always one of them. The biggest obstacles are censorship and slander and lies from the media. If you tell the truth, you get silenced by Big Tech. If that doesn’t do the trick, the media comes in and destroys your entire reputation and life. Savanah’s fighting spirit gives me hope. “This is a war, and I

will never stop exposing the corrupt entities at play,” she declared Monday. “I will continue to elevate the voices in this country that the media tries to silence.” Savanah’s website is savsaysofficial.com. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, March 31, 2022 — STOSSEL from 7 out. “Renewables are clearly better,” Neumann replies. She says we’ll solve renewable energy’s inconsistency by doing things like storing energy in batteries. Well, yes, a battery that holds energy for weeks would make renewables work. But it doesn’t exist. “This is just a total fantasy, which is why nobody has done it anywhere, ever!” says Alex Epstein, author of “The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels.” Fossil fuels are moral, Epstein correctly points out, because human flourishing depends on them. Abundant fossil fuels are especially important for poor people. “Three billion people in the world still use less electricity than a typical American refrigerator. Are we going

to allow them to have a modern life? Because that’s going to depend on fossil fuels.” Even if climate change becomes a serious problem, fossil fuels reduce its harm by making us prosperous enough to afford protection against the climate. “We have a 98% decline in climate-related disaster deaths over the last 100 years,” Epstein points out. A 98% drop in deaths! This is the amazing untold story of fossil fuels and their benefits. Because oil and natural gas so efficiently provide power, heat homes when it’s freezing, pump water during droughts, etc., millions thrive, despite problems like climate change. Thanks to fossil fuels, “We have this amazing productive ability,” says Epstein. “That’s the only reason we ex-

perience the planet as livable.” Global warming is a threat. Limiting fossil fuels now, without a capable alternative, will make it even harder to deal with the effects. Unless someone invents a miracle battery or something else that makes sun and wind power practical, we need fossil fuels, desperately. Poor people need them most. METZLER from 7 united NATO as never before in solidarity, expanded defense spending and purpose. Ukraine’s plucky President Volodymyr Zelensky calls for a No Fly Zone over his country to deter Russian air attacks, but he seems to settle for a lethal mix of Western anti-tank weapons and munitions which have blunted and bloodied the Russian advance. NATO while united in defense assistance to Ukraine, does not wish to veer into WWIII. President Joe Biden’s trip to Brussels and Poland was underwhelming as were his dangerous rhe-torical blunders and mixed messages, many of which had to be “walked back” or “clarified” by his media handlers. While neither the U.S. nor NATO states wish to enter a shooting war with Russia, the biggest dangers remain missteps and

unintended blunders by either side. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, stated, “We are determined to do all we can to sup-port Ukraine… at the same time, we have a responsibility to ensure the conflict does not escalate further. Because this would be even more dangerous and devastating.” Stoltenberg added sage-ly, “At this time, transatlantic unity and solidarity are vital.” So does embattled Ukraine face Moscow’s “Syria scenario” of a long slogging low intensity war with wrecked towns, pulverized cities and a permanent displacement of refugees? How can this be avoided? *First, establish a Ceasefire. Ukraine needs an immediate ceasefire followed by concrete political and humanitarian solutions to stop the fighting and end the destruction.

Competitive Wages! Flexible Hours!

*Second, Reduce the Refugee tsunami in what has become the largest civilian movement since WWII. Refugees do not wish to leave their homeland so give them a viable reason to return safely. *Third, Negotiate for a truce between Russia and Ukraine pending a formal peace settlement. This is naturally the most difficult given Moscow’s demands go well beyond Ukraine renouncing any plans to join NATO. Resolving and ending this horrific European war remains critical; yet provoking and poking a wounded bear is not a strategy. John J.
