It’s Spring Migration Season by Chris Bosak Contributing Writer

I’m not a big keeper of lists. I don’t have a bird life list, U.S. list or state list. I do, however, keep a yard list and work list.

My yard list was very robust at my former house in the woods. Now that I live close to downtown in a small suburban town, my yard list is not very impressive. My work list is grow-

ing, however. We recently got new offices and I now look out into a patch of woods instead of a parking lot. My daily sprinkling of seeds and nuts in the crevices of the downed trees at the

wood’s edge enhances the view and draws in extra birds. The other day, a hermit thrush hopped along the ground near where I place the seeds. It wasn’t See BOSAK on 25

What is the key to having a garden that produces a good harvest or lots of flowers? According to John Moulton, owner of Moulton Farm, “There are a lot of factors that can affect your garden. Even the best plants, perfect location, and reasonably good weather won’t be enough if you don’t focus on some key things early in the gardening season.” Starting at 10 am on Saturday, April 23, find out what Moulton recommends and ask questions at the free “Gardens with Good Beginnings” workshop at Moulton Farm in Meredith. Moulton will share his years of experience growing vegetables, discuss what to focus on and what not to do to give your garden the best chance of producing well this year. “What you do early in the season can make an important difference in how well your plants deal with pests and our sometimes challenging weather conditions,” Moulton says. “In our garden center, we’ll often have people asking us questions once they have a problem. Many of those issues could have been greatly reduced by doing things differently when that plant was quite young. Or by doing something before the seed or plant went into their garden.” This is a free workshop suitable for gardeners of all experience levels. No pre-registration is necessary. More information can be found at MoultonFarm.com Moulton Farm is located at 18 Quarry Road off Route 25 in Meredith.

Renewal To The Editor: Once I was at the bus stop, talking with a man from India as we waited. He said that he had come to America in the middle of the cold weather and was so sad to see that so many of the trees were dead, but he didn’t want to say anything to anyone about it because he didn’t want to be offensive. Then a day came when everything started waking up. The whole occurrence simply amazed him because he had never lived where there was a true change of season. He had never seen Spring. Aren’t we lucky to have Spring? Mary Weston Dover, NH.

Russia Is The Immoral Enemy

To The Editor: After Putin invaded Ukraine, the U.S. administration timidly succumbed to Putin’s threats to widen the war if the U.S. and NATO became directly involved. We abandoned Ukraine to the Russian war crimes machine by not confronting the aggression within Ukraine. Economic sanctions against Russia and the supply of defensive military equipment to Ukraine will not stop the wanton deaths and destruction. They need combat aircraft, tanks and long range offensive missile systems. The murdering of Ukrainian civilians by the Russian military

is similar to the German atrocities committed in Europe during WWII, and the ramifications of the U.S. and NATO not going into Ukraine will reverberate in Europe for many years. Russia could have military forces closer to the borders of NATO countries, and Russia could threaten these countries unless they agree to leave NATO. The world is faced with a Russian tyrant who is intent on expanding into other countries and willing to achieve his aims by warfare. The free world will be locked in a new Cold War and possible military confrontations with Russia as Putin tries to recreate the Soviet empire. NATO should be encouraged to increase its military forces; and offensive missile systems should be deployed in NATO countries. Russia has exhibited inhumanity to man, and it is the immoral enemy of mankind. Donald Moskowitz Londonderry, NH.

Justice Jackson Will Undermine Our Democracy To The Editor: You can expect Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to replace the established will of the American people with her own views. Justice Jackson will do what President Biden and her supporters put

her in place to do, i.e., to undermine our “Democracy”. Three things support this claim: Jackson’s judicial record, Jackson’s answers during questioning, and the Biden Administration’s actions. In a Democracy (like our Constitutional Republic) the supreme power resides in the hands of the people. Our elected representatives create laws as allowed by the US Constitution created by the people who reserved for themselves the right to change the Constitution. Judicial or Executive branch actions to create or change laws or our Constitution violate our Constitution, are contrary to the people’s will, and undermine our “Democracy”. Justice Jackson’s criminal sentences were typically substantially lower (e.g., 34% shorter for all, including violent, crimes and 47% shorter for distributing child pornography) than the national sentencing guidelines established by the people’s representatives. Several of Justice Jackson’s judicial decisions in high profile cases appear politically motivated and were reversed even by the left leaning DC Circuit Court. Either she doesn’t understand our laws and Constitution, or she rejects the will of the people. In either case she undermines our Democracy. In her confirmation hearings Justice Jackson said that she (a Harvard Graduate) couldn’t define a woman. This suggests that she will ignore biSee MAILBOAT on 29

My upbringing has led me to believe that everybody is a somebody and nobody is a nobody. That being the case, I’ll have to admit that on occasion I have occasionally sought to get the autograph of certain people I’ve thought to be a special somebody while not even thinking of asking for an autograph of most people. If I’ve ever been successful in obtaining an autograph of a famous person I don’t know where it is now. But famous or not let me tell you of some “important” people I’ve at least seen. While attending high school in Laconia I spent a lot of time after school around the railroad station because my Dad parked his car nearby. On one occasion while waiting inside the railroad depot I noticed a man walking nervously around like he was lost.. He would go to the taxi office that was then inside the station and talk to the person in charge there, and then he would go and look

Somehow I heard that this man, dressed in suit and overcoat on that late afternoon winter’s day, was an outfielder for the Boston Red Sox, one Jimmy Piersall. Then I wanted to talk to him, and get his autograph, but didn’t dare do so because he didn’t appear to be in a happy mood, and had a

reputation of being able to swing his fists as well as a bat. I found out the next day that he had a speaking engagement that night in Claremont, NH, and was supposed to have changed trains at Concord, but didn’t, so he found himself in Laconia and had to hire Richardson’s taxi service to drive him to Claremont. Buster Keaton’s “Battling Butler” At The Flying Monkey Moviehouse PLYMOUTH - He never smiled on camera, earning him the nickname of “the Great Stone Face.” But Buster Keaton’s comedies rocked Hollywood’s silent era with laughter throughout the 1920s. Acclaimed for their originality, clever visual gags, and amazing stunts, Keaton’s films remain popular crowd-pleasers today. See for yourself with a screening of ‘Battling Butler’ (1926), one of Keaton’s landmark feature films, on Wednesday, April 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Flying Monkey Moviehouse and Performance Center, 39 Main St., Plymouth, N.H. ‘Battling Butler’ tells the story of pampered millionaire Alfred Butler (Keaton) who tries to impress the girl of his dreams (Sally O’Neil) by pretending to be a championship boxer with the same name. The masquerade leads to knockout comedy both in and outside the ring, giving Keaton ample opportunity to display his gifts for physical and visual comedy. Admission is $10 per person. Live music will be provided by accompanist Jeff Rapsis, a New Hampshire-based performer who specializes in creating music for silent film presentations.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Central Baptist Church of Gilford, NH Independent, KJV

Late Tax Tips I’m sure by now most of you have already filed your taxes and I apologize. I usually have this column ready in February, long by Brendan Smith before the April Weirs Times Editor 15th return due date, but I only came across these two obscure new taxes and deductions this week and I thought I would pass them on anyway. I had to do some research to make sure these were all real after some friends told me they used them when they filed this year only hearing about them at the last minute themselves. So, if you haven’t done your taxes yet, you might want to take note of these. Some are so new that even your tax professional might not have heard of them. For those of you who have already filed, you might be able to submit an amended return if either of these apply to you. So, in lieu of my usual fantastically witty column, I instead present this as a public service. You can thank me later. THE SELFIE DEDUCTION – Are you one of those people who are always taking selfies of themselves and posting them online? Well, if you have posted less selfies of yourself in 2021 than 2020, than you were eligible to take a tax credit of seventy-five dollars for every less selfie that you posted. (Example: if you posted fifty selfies in 2020 and only forty in 2021 you get a seven-hundred-and-fifty-dollar credit. The limit is two thousand dollars total credit.) The object of this credit is to try and help eliminate this growing epidemic from human existence. You do have to be careful with this one though, since according to the IRS website, “...selfies taken in 2021 while

entral Baptist hurch

standing in front of a mirror are counted as two selfies due to the reflection so you will need to deduct two less selfies to get one credit.” Also remember that selfies taken in front of a mirror in 2022 only count as one selfie when being used as a deduction from selfies taken in 2021. Of course, like most IRS rules, this can be a bit complicated, but a good tax accountant can maybe help you figure this out. (Please refrain from taking a selfie holding your amended tax return to post online as this will eliminate five of the selfies that were used as deductions in the first place.) (Important to also note the “OVERBLOWN COMPLIMENT TAX” that most folks don’t know about. With this you will be taxed an additional five dollars for every complimentary comment you post online about someone else’s selfie, since this is only helping fuel this out of control epidemic.) SOLITARY MASK TAX – Now that the pandemic is basically over, a new mask tax has been put into place. Government spotters have been driving around the country looking for drivers who are still wearing their masks with the windows rolled up and no one else in the car. If spotted, your license plate will be noted and a $100 tax added to your total tax. Of course, since this is a government operation, most folks won’t be notified that they owe this tax until much later and will be surprised to get a letter in the mail by August telling them they need to pay. Calling the IRS won’t do any good since no one will answer. The government is also counting on these people to still be very confused about the status of the virus itself due to their own inconsistent messaging and to be too afraid to come down to their local IRS office to complain since there might be other people there. The interest and late fees alone should bring

in some nice revenue for the government to waste on stupid things. Once again, I apologize for being late with these two tax changes for 2021, but I do already know of one new deduction that you will be able to take advantage of on your 2022 returns. THE POLITICAL MAILER DEDUCTION - With this deduction you will be allowed to deduct fifteen dollars for every pound of oversized cardboard mailers you receive during the 2022 campaign season. You will not be allowed to deduct more than eight hundred and fifty dollars in total. Also, anyone found stealing mailers from their neighbors’ mailboxes to beef up their own deductions will face up to two years in jail, a twenty thousand dollar fine or two hundred hours of community service picking up discarded mailers left by the side of the road by people unaware of this deduction. (Tips: Make sure your tax professional has an accurate scale for correct measurement, so you get your proper deduction. Also registering as in Independent increases the amount of mailers you will receive which can add up to a healthy deduction.) I hope this helps those of you late filers as well as some who already have. I personally have cashed in on the two-thousand dollar selfie credit and am planning to use the money I saved for a new phone with a cool camera. GLSEN’s Groomers In Plain Sight Everything old is new again as a new generation of parents takes on kiddie-porn curriculum producers masquerading as anti-bullying crusaders. So let me repeat a warning I’ve issued repeatedly to families across the country: “Diversity.” “Tolerance.” “Safety.” If a corporate-funded educational nonprofit targeting K-12 students employs those weasel words, get your kids as far by Michelle Malkin away as possible, start following the money Syndicated Columnist and stop being afraid. For 25 years -- yes, friends, a full quartercentury -- I’ve reported on the perverse and pedophilia-promoting work of a massive propaganda network founded in 1990 and originally called the National Gay, Lesbian and Straight Teachers Network, or GLSTN, “to address homophobic and heterosexist behavior and bias in schools.” Radical leftist community organizers in Chicago spearheaded GLSTN’s hijacking of elementary, middle and high school classrooms under the guise of creating “safe schools.” Through annual conferences, educator training, brainwashing films such as “It’s Elementary,” and dissemination of sexually explicit and age-inappropriate books, the group enticed children into the alphabet mafia and demonized Christian nuclear families who dared dissent. GLSTN was renamed the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, or GLSEN, in 1997 as it expanded its political advocacy and deepened its coffers filled with cash from Fortune 500 companies targeting children including Hollister, Disney, YouTube, Urban Outfitters and Nickelodeon. Other major sponsors and contributors to GLSEN hail from Wall Street, pedo-clogged Hollywood circles: convicted sex predator Harvey Weinstein-tied talent agency CAA, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, and Marilyn and Jeffrey Katzenberg. I reported extensively on the vile and toxic GLSEN reading materials pimped by President Barack Obama’s safe schools czar and GLSEN head Kevin Jennings in 2009, but I first learned of GLSTN/GLSEN’s grooming activities in the fall of 1997 while an editorial writer and columnist at the Seattle Times from my friend Linda Jordan, a citizen whistleblower and relentless independent investigator. Here’s what I wrote at the time: “Picture this: Two bare-chested boys embraced in a kiss. A third person, whose face is not shown but is also bare-chested, stands off to the side with his hand on the head of one boy. Below the vivid color photo, which See MALKIN on 29

Yes, It’s Biden’s Inflation This week, America received news of yet another shocking inflation report: over the past 12 months, inflation has skyrocketed 8.5%, outpacing wage gains by 2.9%. That inflation has flooded every area by Ben Shapiro of American life, from Syndicated Columnist gas (up 48%) to airfare (24%) to furniture (16%) to milk (13%). Inflation is costing the average American family hundreds of dollars per month -- and, as we know, inflation is a highly regressive tax, harming those at the bottom of the income spectrum the most. For its part, the Biden administration blames Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. White House press secretary and incipient MSNBC employee Jen Psaki announced, “we expect March CPI headline inflation to be extraordinarily elevated due to Putin’s price hike,” and blamed gas prices alone for the spike. That, of course, is ludicrous. In February 2021, the month after Biden took office, the inflation rate was just 1.7%. In April 2021 it spiked to 4.2%. By May 2021, the inflation rate was 5%; it remained in that range until October 2021, when it spiked to 6.2%; it then spiked again to 6.8% in November 2021 and 7.5% in January 2022. In other words, the problem ain’t Putin. It also isn’t supply chain issues alone. The core inflation rate in Europe has remained well below that of the United States; the harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) was 5.9% in February 2022 in the Europe area, compared with 7.9% in the United States. So, what is the problem? The problem lies in loose monetary policy from the Federal Reserve for years on end, combined with wildly irresponsible economic policy from the Biden administration. Begin with the Federal Reserve. Between 2008 and 2015, the Federal Funds Effective Rate was essentially zero. It rose to 2.39% in May 2019, then dove back down to zero amidst

the COVID-19 recession. This means that the Federal Reserve essentially subsidized borrowing and spending for years on end. But the problem didn’t stop there. During the COVID-19 downturn, the Federal Reserve purchased some $4 trillion in assets, injecting liquidity into the economy in the mistaken belief that the problem was lack of demand, not lack of supply. This superheated the economy; as supply chains attenuated, prices rose dramatically. All of this was accompanied by ridiculously spendthrift policy from the Biden administration. The Trump administration, along with a bipartisan contingent in Congress, spent nearly endless amounts of money as the American economy was subjected to an artificial coma. But the Biden administration entered office with a working vaccine and COVID-19 on the wane -- and then proceeded to inject trillions more in spending into the economy. In 2020, the government spent approximately $6.6 trillion in federal outlays; in 2021, the year of recovery, the government spent $7.2 trillion. That spending was wildly unjustifiable. With vaccines available and people going back to work, the Biden administration had a responsibility to leave the economy alone. Instead, Biden insisted on reshaping the economy according to his whim. As Ezra Klein lamented to former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, “there was a reason the Biden administration wanted to run the economy hot... it felt, finally, like we were reaching people on the margins. We were putting a lot of firepower to do that... And then for that to turn into this horrifying inflation problem, which is now eating back those wage increases... I recognize the world doesn’t have to please me, but it is maddening.” Yes, reality is maddening. But not quite as maddening as the predictable results of ignoring financial reality, then lying about it in order to blame someone else.

Kids’ Books Bookstores now sell only certain kinds of children’s books. “Go into Barnes & Noble,” says Bethany Mandel in my new video, “and you will be by John Stossel met with a wall of Syndicated Columnist biographies. Probably 27 different books about former Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Great. A ton about Kamala Harris. Great.” But where are the biographies on conservatives? There weren’t any. She found lots on people like Hillary

Clinton, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Elizabeth Warren and Rachel Carson, but not one on conservatives like Margaret Thatcher or Amy Coney Barrett. “It’s time to bring those books to the market because Lord knows the publishing industry won’t,” says Mandel. So, she created Heroes of Liberty, a company that will publish books on conservatives like Barrett, Ronald Reagan and Thomas Sowell. “You’re indoctrinating kids just like the left does,” I tell her. “That’s a very fair question,” she responds. “My answer is, read the books!” Her top seller is her biography of Sowell, who overcame adversity to

become a famous economist. When Sowell’s family moved to New York, his new teachers put him in a lower grade because they assumed that he couldn’t compete. Sowell went to see the principal. “He didn’t play the victim. He stood up for himself,” says Mandel. “He said, ‘I will prove to you that I’m capable of doing fourth grade math.’” The principal actually listened and gave him a test. When Sowell aced it, the principal told the teachers, “Take this young man to fourth grade, where he belongs!” Sowell didn’t let racism or poverty stop him. He helped pay his family’s expenses by getting jobs, like deliver-

ing groceries. By contrast, she says, books from today’s big publishing houses portray Black people as victims who advance only through protest. Ibram X. Kendi’s popular “Antiracist Baby” teaches kids to focus on color. “If you claim to be color-blind, you deny what’s right in front of you,” writes Kendi. That’s “toxic,” says Mandel. “When you promote this hyperawareness of race, kids see their friend as Black, white or brown, instead of Lucy or Sally.” Although conservatives make up about half the country, book publishers rarely try to appeal to them. French Election Countdown; Status Quo vs Gamble? France faces a dilemma. Does a successful and prosperous West European state wish to gamble with its future? Or does that by John J. Metzler state, feeling the Syndicated Columnist popular anxiety from high food and fuel prices, crime and a constricting COVID pandemic, still hold to the status quo? Now with the second round of the French Presidential elections upon us, the choice and political rematch is between the incumbent President Emmanuel Macron and his Eurosceptic opponent Marine Le Pen of the once politically reviled National Front but now rebranded populist

National Rally. During the first round of the elections President Macron won 28 percent of the vote versus 23 percent for LePen. This was largely expected. But contrary to the contest five years ago when a young and upstart Macron crushed his opponent under a wave of 66 percent of the vote, this political duel is set amid gloomy economic uncertainty and dangerous geopolitical tensions in Europe. Despite more than a dozen political parties vying for the five-year presidency, contemporary French politics is defined less by following political isms or traditional Left/ Right political divides than supporting ideas along cultural and social fault lines. For example the three major post WWII political movements, the Gaul-

lists, the Socialists and the Communists combined, gained just under ten percent of the entire vote! The Socialists, led by the arrogantly incompetent and unpopular mayor of Paris garnered less than 2 percent of the results! Others, like the looney Left Popular Union representing a gaggle of parties only reached 22%. Voters are angry. Many of the fractured Left are protesting under banners, “No Macron, No Le Pen!” Many will not vote at all, thus making the second round vote far less predictable. Other politicos have made their peace or are trying to make a deal with the President; immediately after the first round of voting the Socialist candidate Anne Hidalgo, and the Gaullist Valerie Pecresse, endorsed Macron. So too did former Social-

This series of Letters From God is an attempt to put the thoughts of God as revealed in the Scriptures as they relate to individuals and the nation of the USA.

cross assured all who trusted him that they would be forgiven and restored to a relationship with me. Jesus had tried to prepare his disciples for his death by letting them know that after his substitutionary sacrifice for their sins, he would be raised from the grave. Unfortunately, it never quite got through to their heads or hearts. As a result, after Jesus was crucified, they became despondent and despairing of life. This is one of life’s great problems, that of discouragement and despairing of life. All of humanity suffers under this plague and many never recover. Indeed, many even take their life as a result. Two of his disciples we’re walking away from Jerusalem to a nearby city called Emmaus, when they were approached in the darkness by a shrouded individual. As they walked, they discussed with this new traveling companion their despair over the fact that they had trusted in Jesus being the one sent from God to deliver them but instead he was sentenced to death and was crucified. They went on to say, “but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.” The new friend surprise them with a rebuke. He said, “how foolish you are and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken.” He went on to say “did not the Christ (the Messiah)

have to suffer these things and then enter his glory. And beginning with Moses and all the prophets he explained to them what was said in all the scriptures concerning himself (Luke 24:25-27). This was no ordinary visitor; this was Jesus who was alive, and they didn’t realize he was walking with them in their presence. The story goes on to say that when they got to their destination, they invited him into their home to share a meal with them. As he broke the bread, they saw the nail pierced hands and immediately recognized it was Jesus who was alive. They were immediately filled with joy and they ran back to Jerusalem to tell the other disciples that Jesus was alive, and he walked with them in their presence. How is this a panacea you may ask? Let me put it in terms that you perhaps could understand. Most are familiar with a fictitious character called Superman. If you recall, he had superpowers beyond any human. He also had the ability to see danger that threatened the lives of individuals or even the entire nation. Because of his supernatural power and his passion to protect and preserve the vulnerable from life threatening foes, his presence with the people ensured them that nothing could harm them when he was present. Superman is ficti-

Letters From God

QUESTION: Is There A Panacea For Life? Yes, there is! A panacea, as you may know, is a solution or remedy for all of life’s difficulties or problems. There are many that plague your human existence and rob you of meaningful life. Perhaps the worst is that death is awaiting you and it is unavoidable. If you are not ready to die you can never truly live. Though there are many individual things that you can do to treat each individual problem you face, there is one however that, if it is appropriated, can bring comfort and relief to everything you face in life. The panacea is revealed in an encounter in my book, the Bible, in the 24th chapter of Luke. I asked Luke to include this event so that all who looked to me in faith would have access to the panacea of life. The event occurred shortly after my son, Jesus, was raised from the dead. Just as I promised in my book, the Bible, in the Old Testament, I raised him from the dead (Job 19:25-27, Psalm 16:10, Isaiah 53:1011). I did this in order to prove that he was indeed God and that his sacrifice of paying for your sins on the

tious but my Son is your creator God with power and authority to overcome any thing that threatens to harm you. If you were to have your eyes opened and recognize that he is alive and present with you today and if you were willing to trust him instead of your own pathetically weak power, you would have the panacea for life. Isaiah the prophet spoke of the confidence you can have if you would trust my Son when he said “so do not fear for I’m with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10). That hand is almighty. Sin has brought many problems into your life but if you will trust me and my Son, we will deliver you from every problem you face, including death. He’s alive you will be as well, if you ask him to forgive you and walk with you through life and death. I love you, God These letters are written by a New Hampshire pastor.

Boat Restoration Volunteers ‘Restoring’ NH’s Boating Heritage WOLFEBORO Armed with coffee and (occasionally) donuts on Monday mornings, volunteers in New Hampshire Boat Museum’s

boat restoration shop recently transported a heavy antique steam engine on loan for this year’s upcoming main steam-themed

exhibit. “We traveled to the Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation in Waltham, Massachusetts to

pick it up,” explained volunteer and Board Trustee Bob Sterndale. “It’s an interesting story.” Noting this story will be shared when the museum opens in May, New Hampshire Boat Museum (NHBM) Executive Director Martha Cummings said their boat restoration volunteers are their “unsung heroes.” “They restore or prepare for exhibition many of the boats people see on display as well as others we hope to share with the public someday,” she said. “They are preserving important pieces of our state’s boating heritage.” This winter, the crew has finished the res-

Other current projects include a 1957 Mercury Mark 75 outboard, which Sterndale said was revolutionary for its time. “After many years as a home to rodents, it required extensive disassembly for cleaning and repainting in preparation for dis-

When I was a young boy, I used to listen to my dad talk about catching cod from shore. We’d sit at the family warf, and he’d point up at the Pierce Island bridge and say, “Cod fish were so plentiful when I was a kid that I used to catch them off of that bridge.” Having spent most of my life traveling 15 to 30-miles out to catch them, it makes hearing stories of catching cod in the Piscataqua River almost unimaginable. So, when my good friend Eric asked me if I wanted to join him for a morning of kayak cod fishing, I was intrigued to say the least. I had known about Eric catching cod in his kayak. He lives in Mass and does a ton of kayak fishing. When the season was completely closed, he would catch them as by-catch when he would fish for cunner, black sea bass, and other inshore bottom dwelling species. When Massachusetts opened a two-week cod season, I would often hear of Eric’s inshore cod dinners. For those interested, Massachusetts cod season runs from April 1 through April 14 with a one fish bag limit and 21inch minimum length limit.

The second spot was slow for Eric and Carl, but I found a few fish in water around 90-feet deep. The lures I was using were metal jigs made by Daddy Mac Lures. I caught all of my fish on my signature series Nervous Minnow. When we started fishing, we were near the slack tide period, and I was able to use the

1.4-ounce Nervous Minnow. Once the tide got moving, I switched to the 2.8-ounce. We were looking for small schools of bait fish, mostly small pollock. See MOORE on 27

Kayak fishing for cod is fun, but safety should be a priority. A drysuit, PFD, and portable VHF radio are considered essentials. I met Eric and his friend Carl at an undisclosed location. I was honored to get the invite as Eric doesn’t bring just anyone to his spots. With today’ internet, spots are easily burned. One day you have them all to yourself, the next you’re fighting for parking and fishing spots, but I digress. The three of us loaded up our kayaks on wheeled carts and headed to the water. Once we launched, Eric told me that we had about a one-mile journey to get to the first spot. We picked up a few fish early

The car accident almost killed the man some thought of as the world’s greatest golfer. The winner of multiple Majors, the golf great suffered several fractures in the accident and given his age, many thought he’d never play again. But less than two years later he surprised everyone and actually returned to Augusta National Country Club to shine in the Masters while winning the admiration of golf fans everywhere. Tiger Woods? No. Ben Hogan. Hogan was nearly killed in a terrible car collision with a bus in 1949. The defending U.S. Open champion at the time, Hogan was one of golf’s brightest lights. Against all odds he returned to the game and like Woods, received an emotional welcome upon his return to Augusta in 1951. Unlike Woods, however, Hogan actually triumphed in his return to the Masters, coming from behind to beat Skee Riegel by two strokes on Masters Sunday. Like Woods, Hogan occasionally limped but the Texan gutted it out for the win. Not to diminish Woods’ inspiring 2022 return to compete in a Major, but Hogan’s

Whereas Woods’ accident involved apparent recklessness, the Hogan accident occurred on a misty night with minimal visibility. At the last moment before the crash Hogan threw himself in front of his wife to shield her from the collision. His gallantry actually saved his life, as he’d have otherwise been impaled by the steering column. Still, he suffered a double-fracture of the pelvis, a fractured collar bone, a left ankle fracture, a chipped rib, and near-fatal blood clots. He’d subsequently suffer lifelong circulation problems and other physical limitations.

Doctors wondered if he’d ever walk again, much less play golf. They couldn’t imagine him winning the Masters two years later. All that said, it was an unexpected treat to see Tiger back on the links. The 47-yearold hadn’t competed in well over a year. His injuries included comminuted open fractures to both his tibia and fibula bones in his right leg. His opening round 71 was his best score of the four days and it helped him to make the cut while also greatly increasing the event’s TV ratings. ESPN reported that its Friday viewership was up an amazing 31% over 2021. While Tiger’s comeback fell short of Hogan’s, the drama in

THE SIMPLE FEAST “It’s Baked Fruit Cocktail!”

by Eric N Gibson Contributing Writer

Just what is Baked Fruit Cocktail? Baked Fruit Cocktail is a delicious combination of sugar, flour, baking soda, a dash of salt, egg, vanilla extract, and Fruit Cocktail, all combined together in a 9X9 baking dish and… ready… YES! That’s right! It’s BAKED! This recipe was a favorite dessert from my wife’s recipe box. I was introduced to it about 28 years ago when we were dating. Because of its simplicity and affordability it was a staple for many years at dinners when asked to bring dessert. Times changed, I began my foray into cheese cakes and more elaborate desserts; tossing aside simplic-

ity for more complex treats. Then one day recently, hankering for something different, I once again turned to the recipe box and found this version of Baked Fruit Cocktail. Some of you who are

older reading this article have probably made Baked Fruit Cocktail before. Perhaps you know it better as Fruit Cocktail Cake? Regardless of the name it goes by, I am sure you too know it for

its simplicity in making and for its sweet, fruity, almost caramel-like flavor along with its moist, spongelike texture. This is one of those desserts that is not just good, it’s gooooood; good hot, good cold, good at room temperature. It’s even good slightly warmed in the microwave. It’s good with vanilla ice cream, good with any ice cream, good with whipped topping, or even good plain… really, it’s that good! And speaking of good, I enjoy a good story about food so I had to look up the story of Fruit Cocktail. Canned Fruit Cocktail traces its roots back to around the early 1890’s. Originally canned and marketed as “Fruit Salad” under the Golden Morn label on the west coast, it would be another 35 years before the name Fruit Cocktail would be used by Del Monte. Other companies quickly followed with their own brand names for this yummy blend of peachSee FEAST on 14

And, would you believe that those peaches, pears, pineapples, grapes, and cherries are actually regulated by the USFDA as to how much, minimum and maximum of each by percentage, is allowed per can in order to be called Fruit Cocktail? But, back before all the regulation, back before it was officially called Fruit Cocktail what went into this fruit mix? Well as far as anyone can tell… Peaches, Pears, Pineapple, Grapes, and Cherries. Seriously! The fruits have basically remained the same over all these years but what actually went into the can was chopped up culls from the cutting room, not the Grade A “pretty fruit.” Thanks to food scientists, these leftovers; the bruised, the dented, or what some would call the See FEAST on 15

FEAST from 14 seconds and literally, the least desirable fruits of someone’s labor, now had a place to go… right into a can. With blemishes removed from the fruit and through the magic of cutting and dicing these fruits became a pretty fruit salad. But big business has a way of creating something from nothing and with it bigger profits. At some point, once again, Madison Ave. made a “silk purse out of a sow’s ear” and behold, Fruit Cocktail was born. Fast forward to the 1950’s, the golden years of domestic experimentation in the kitchen. Moms everywhere were using canned goods to create “hybrid” foods; recipes not completely from scratch and not

straight from the freezer. Everything from hors d’oeuvres to desserts, salads to sides, and even entrees were not immune from what purists would argue was adulteration while those with a decidedly more adventurous palate would say it was inspiration. Baked Fruit Cocktail was one such creation. Born out of a creative mind that knew the fundamentals of baking and had a well stocked pantry to choose from; the combining of simple ingredients created a simple dessert, for this Simple Feast. Plant and Protect Trees In Honor Of Arbor Day by Melinda Myers Celebrate National Arbor Day, the last Friday in April, by planting new trees and caring for established ones in your landscape and community. This special holiday was first celebrated in 1872. Arbor Day celebrations continue to recognize the important role trees play in our environment and more recently their impact on our mental and emotional well-being. These long-lived members of our landscapes and communities help combat flooding, shade our homes, reduce energy use, remove pollutants from the air and so much more. According to the USDA Forest Service, properly placed trees around buildings can help reduce air conditioning requirements by 30 percent and save between 20 to 50 percent on energy used for heating.

A garden of hostas beneath a Burr Oak tree. Trees also help improve water quality and reduce flooding. They lessen the impact of stormwater by intercepting rainfall, absorbing, and transpiring moisture from the soil into the air. Their canopies intercept and slow rainfall’s velocity before it hits the ground. This reduces runoff and erosion, allowing more water to be absorbed by the soil instead of

overwhelming our storm sewers. Spending time among the trees also helps boost our immune system. Studies reveal tree-filled landscapes help decrease domestic conflict, as well as aggression and violence at schools. A mindful walk through the woods, known as forest bathing, helps reduce blood pressure and stress. It increases focus, energy

levels, improves sleep and much more. When planting new trees make sure to select one that will fit in the space when mature and thrive in the growing conditions. Look for those that provide multiple seasons of beauty and support birds and pollinators as they deliver the many other environmental benefits. Select a planting location away from overhead and underground utilities to avoid future conflicts. Always call 811, a free underground utility locating service, at least three business days before putting the first shovel in the ground. Water new plantings thoroughly when the top few inches of soil are crumbly and slightly moist. Use a soaker hose or drip irrigation to apply the water directly See MYERS on 21

Extinguish Home Fire Fears (BPT) - Did you know there is one tool that you can keep on hand to make sure your home is ready for a fire emergency? Having fire extinguishers - and knowing how to use them - will allow you to act quickly should a fire start. “Many people may not know just how quickly a fire can start and spread in a residential home,” said Ashley Gocken, senior manager of brand marketing for First Alert, the most trusted brand in home safety. “Having the proper fire extinguishers can make the difference between a small fire and one that causes serious damage or injury, so it is important to have fire ex-

tinguishers and know how to use them.” Follow these fire extinguisher tips in the home to ensure your family is prepared: Learn Your ABCs All fire extinguish-

ers should have a letter rating of A, B or C that indicates the type of fire they are designed to combat. Class A rated extinguishers can put out fires caused by wood, paper, trash and other common materials. Class B extinguishers are intended for use on fires caused by grease, gasoline and other flammable liquids, while Class C extinguishers are designated for electrical fires caused by appliances, equipment and cords. Placement Is Key According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the U.S. A fire extinguisher should be accessible on each level of your home, especially in high-risk places like the kitchen and garage. Place extinguishers where each adult member of the household can easily

reach them and discuss these locations throughout the house with all family members. For added ease of use, First Alert’s multi-rated Rechargeable Home Fire Extinguisher is lightweight and ideal for most common household fires. Know What To Do... Every First Alert fire extinguisher includes labeling instructions on proper usage, but a simple way to remember how to use your fire extinguisher is with the acronym PASS: * Pull the pin on the extinguisher * Aim the nozzle low toward the base of the fire * Squeeze the trigger * Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side ...And Know When To Exit Your fire extinguisher is a great first step in your fire safety plan and should be See FIRE on 21

cies, and state and local governments. There are also a number of down payment assistance loans available with attractive terms. For example, deferred payment second loans. These are secondary loans for which payments are not due until you sell, refinance or pay off the first mortgage loan. And for those looking to live in a rural

area, USDA rural home loans are a favorable option, because they have no down payment requirement. Tax credits are another form of assistance. Certain states and local governments, including housing finance agencies, issue mortgage credit certificates that reduce the amount of federal income tax you pay.

(StatePoint) If you’re ready to buy your first home but are short on the down payment, you’re not alone. Affording a down payment is the number one barrier to homeownership, and rising housing costs are presenting even bigger hurdles. The August 2021 Freddie Mac Housing Price Index showed a 19.67% year-over-year increase in home values. At the same time, more than 35% of nonhomeowners say they do not have enough money to put toward a down payment, according to NerdWallet. Among millennials, the figures are even more disheartening, with 63% having set aside no money for a down payment. But there’s good news. Down payment assistance programs, an often-overlooked resource, could be the missing piece of the financial puzzle to make your dream of homeownership a reality, and there are more than 2,500 such programs nationwide. According to Freddie Mac, here’s how to take advantage of down payment assistance:

MYERS from 17 to the soil. Even established trees need to be watered during dry periods. Apply ten gallons of water for every inch of the trunk’s diameter when the top four to six inches begin to dry. Prevent hungry critters from dining on new and existing plantings. Apply an organic rain and snow resistant animal repellent like Plantskydd (plantskydd. com). This odor-based repellent deters animals before they take a bite out of your plants. Protect new and existing trees from mowers and weed whips. Plant perennial groundcovers under the tree or cover the soil with two to three inches of shredded bark

or woodchips. Be sure to keep the mulch off the trunk of the tree. Take time not only on Arbor Day but everyday to plant, tend and enjoy trees that provide beauty, shade and so many benefits to our daily lives and future generations. Get the whole family involved and help improve the tree cover in your hometown so everyone benefits. FIRE from 18 used when the fire is contained. When using an extinguisher, keep yourself close to a clear exit so that you can safely leave should a fire spread. If smoke begins to fill the room and the fire does not appear to be extinguishing, exit your home immediately and call 911. Maintain Your Extinguishers When practicing your family escape plan, make a point to also check that your fire extinguishers are not blocked by anything that could impact your access to them should a fire

emergency occur. You should also check the gauge, make sure all parts of the extinguisher are operable, and ensure that no damage, such as dents or rust, has appeared on the device. A fire extinguisher that has been discharged is no longer effective, so replace or have a certified professional refill any that have been used. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, April 21, 2022 — HAVEN from 16 There’s no space quite like the bedroom to command a peaceful presence. A curated palette like the HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams 2022 Color Collection of the Year offers multiple options that exude peacefulness and facilitate tranquility. The Softened Refuge Collection, available exclusively at Lowe’s, is composed of 10 soft and simple tones that can be mixed and matched in any combination for a perfectly cohesive look. One highlight is the 2022 Color of the Year, Aleutian, a washed indigo that is grounded by the warmth of its red undertones and bridges the gap between warm and cool tones. It pairs beautifully with wood tones so you can easily incorporate practical furnishings that lend to an aura of relaxation

and comfort. Laid-Back Living Room Color that mimics the hues found naturally outdoors tend to soothe the soul. Introduce natural calm to a place your family enjoys congregating by updating walls to a sophisticated organic green that is rooted in nature. Carry the relaxed mood throughout the room with complementing nature-inspired neutrals for your furniture, window treatments and accent pieces. Subtle Kitchen Spice A stark white kitchen may feel crisp and clean, but it lacks the character that color brings. You can keep that airy feeling while infusing some gentle, welcoming warmth. Painted cabinets are on trend, so this is a perfect place to play with color. Use a light neutral taupe for the

cabinets then balance with a warm, creamy white on the walls. If you’re worried the space may be dull, infuse a bit of color with a neutral blue on the backsplash. The soft hues work harmoniously for a simple but stylish space. “The Softened Refuge palette is designed to simplify color selection for a perfectly coordinated home design,” said Ashley Banbury, HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams senior color designer. “Color combinations within the Collection can easily be used to craft spaces that help promote positive physical and mental well-being.”

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, April 21, 2022 — the busiest months for spring migration, particularly from mid-April to mid-May, just as September and October are the height of the fall migration. The spring migration ends with a trickle in June with some late songbird and shorebird arrivals from the south. August sees the beginning of the fall migration start slowly with a few shorebirds. Of course, like anything with birdwatching, there are exceptions to these generali-

ties. Some shorebirds start their southward migration in July, or even late June. Some hardy individual birds of migratory species remain with us all winter (or at least attempt to.) Sometimes rarities are blown in from other parts of the country, or the world, for that matter. But the months mentioned above are a good guide as spring and fall migration follow a fairly predictable pattern. Knowing when and

where to see birds helps greatly when it comes to adding species to a life list – for those that keep one anyway. Chris Bosak may be reached at chrisbosak26@gmail.com or through his website www.birdsofnewengland.com

Hermit Thrush. BOSAK from 1 eating the seeds, of course, but it was slowly walking among the leaves and looking curious as hermit thrushes often do. It was the first hermit thrush I had seen in months. In birder speak, it was my FOY hermit thrush. FOY is “first of year,” and is used during spring migration to indicate seeing a bird for the first time since the previous year. I saw dozens of yellow warblers last spring and summer, but it’s been about eight months since I’ve seen one. When I see one in a few weeks, it will be my FOY yellow warbler, and it will be exciting, hence the need for the designation. The hermit thrush sighting got me thinking about how spring and fall migrations are mirror images of each other in many ways. There are the obvious ways, such as spring is northward and fall is southward, but there are subtleties are well. March is like Novem-

Yellow Warbler. ber. April and May are like September and October. June is like August. July, December, January and February are out of the migration conversation in New England with a few exceptions like the early red-winged blackbirds that arrive in February or the late warblers that hang around until December.

CHRIS BOSAK PHOTOS

Let me explain my rambling. March is the beginning of the spring migration with hardy species such as red-winged blackbirds, eastern phoebes, woodcock and osprey. Similarly, November is the tail end of the fall migration with a few sightings of migratory species yet to be had. April and May are

26 SMITH from 3 such local cop I had a brief encounter with. In and around my Dad’s car one afternoon on a pleasant day, I and a brother and a cousin were entertaining ourselves with partially full soda bottles, shaking them and holding our thumbs over the tops to let some of the liquid inside stream onto the pavement. We were in view of City Hall and the Police station, situated near where the Bank of New Hampshire is today. Suddenly a police cruiser pulled up behind us as we sat in the car. As the officer emerged from the car I held up my bottle of soda and said, “ Are you looking for this?” Seeing that it was a soda bottle and not a beer bottle, the officer uttered a what I remember as being a profane exclamation, quickly returned to his car, and drove away. One law enforcement officer who was greatly respected in the area when I was a youngster was Conservation Officer “Slim” Baker. Con-

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, April 21, 2022 —

Former New Hampton Police Chief and Belknap County Deputy Sheriff William (Bill) Wallace. servation Officer was one of the professions that I considered as a vocation when I was a youngster. I was thrilled when Officer Baker stopped and briefly talked with me one day when I was at the side of our rural road. Sadly

he passed away in 1953 at the age of 43, but he is not forgotten. A foundation in his name promotes outdoor living. William “Bill” Wallace was our New Hampton town police chief whose presence in his police uniform was always no-

ticed at events like the town meeting and Old Home Day. He would occasionally stop by our house with some news for our father. Homer Crockett was our County Sheriff in those days and I saw in the county report that Bill Wallace also served as one of his deputies. Between my high school and college days I had a little fire eating act I did and I recall going to the stage at the New Hampton Community School to do my event and seeing Mr. Wallace stationed nearby with a fire extinguisher, He didn’t have to use it, and I extinguished my performances after that one. The Belknap County Extension Service in cooperation with the Farm Bureau and the University of New Hampshire had an impact on my young life as did the Grange. Older readers might remember the names of County Coordinator Horace Ballard, Forester Roger Leighton, Home Demonstrator Harriet Clark Turnquist, and Four-H Agents Ruth Weston and Charles Proctor. The 4-H leaders were the ones I knew personally, first Mrs. Weston, and then Mr. Proctor, as they had the oversight of the clubs in the county and would visit them and promote the work and the members. If I remember correctly the H in 4-H stands for head, hands, heart, and health. Leonard Huckins was the first local leader I remember of our local Hustler’s 4-H club. I also remember Wink Tappley when I think he was just beginning the after school community center in Bristol. He brought a group of young rope jumpers to perform different rope jumping routines at the New Hampton Community School when I was

Former U.S. Senator from Laconia NH: Thomas McIntyre. in the 7th or 8th grade. I remember Governor Sherman Adams who spoke at the dedication of that school and went on to serve in the Eisenhower administration in Washington. But I also remember Cliff Ordway from Pinnacle Hill Road in New Hampton who I helped with haying one year when I was a teenager. I remember walking around his hay field with a scythe to cut any grass the larger mower had missed around rocks or elsewhere. Cliff believed in having a clean field. And his neighbor, Millard Blake, who was the town Road Agent in New Hampton, and for whom I worked for a short time, removing the larger rocks from the mixture of sand and liquid tar as Dana Hill Road was transformed from a dirt to a paved road. And my memory shifts back to Laconia and my summers working for Harold Tefft in the paving business. Those days involved pushing wheelbarrow loads of asphalt and pushing the

hand held roller back and forth on driveways and walks under his oversight, and shoveling gravel off the back of a dump truck. Mr. Tefft also served as a Councilman in Laconia. My Dad talked to and wrote about politicians, and I recall one occasion when Mrs. Thomas (Mrytle) McIntyre came to our house to talk to my Dad about something. Mr. McIntyre became Senator Thomas McIntyre. I will just mention Mr.Avery, the mail carrier (and the childhood disputes over who would be the first to read the monthly Walt Disney comic magazine the mailman brought), Mr. Brunt, the weekly (Friday) fish man, the Grand Union man, and the Watkins and Raleigh salesmen. I’ll add Bill Price to the list, who worked in the press room at the Laconia Citizen and was also a New Hampton friend. Many more could be mentioned, but there is not a nobody among them. They are all somebody worth remembering.

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, April 21, 2022 — MOORE from 11 I was able to jig up a pollock and use bits of it on my hook for bait. If you don’t want to rely on having to find bait on the water, I suggest finding some mackerel at a local bait shop and using bits of that on your hook. I definitely got more bites with bait however, many of them were small cunner nipping at my bait. So, despite what you might think, cod do still exist inshore. New Hampshire has two two-week seasons April 1 through April 14 and September 8 through October 7, with a 1 fish per day bag limit and 21-inch minimum length limit. All told that day, I ended up catching nine cod and was off the water by noon. You can bet I will be adding cod to the list of

species I want to find in my kayak along the New Hampshire coast. If you’re considering trying cod fishing in a kayak, make sure you have appropriate safety gear and pick a good weather day. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, April 21, 2022 —

STOSSEL from 7 “When they produce 27 books about Ruth Bader Ginsburg or ‘Antiracist Baby’ board books, those are bought in bulk by libraries,” says Mandel. Libraries buy many more books than moms and dads. “(So book publishers) have this incentive built in to churn out progressive ideological books.” That surprised me. I thought of librarians as apolitical. But

no, today they are part of the progressive mob. Ninety percent of librarians’ political donations go to Democrats. “It’s our tax dollars buying 1,000 copies of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and zero about Amy Coney Barrett,” Mandel points out. Mandel is frustrated that “girls” children’s literature rarely focuses on motherhood. The books suggest, “You can be a NASA scientist,

an entomologist, (but) girls are not taught that you can have all these career ambitions and also be a mother.” Barrett has seven kids. Mandel’s book says: “For Amy, being a mother is no less important than being a judge.” Mandel’s books are mostly about conservatives. She recently released one about John Wayne. I’m libertarian, not conservative, but I am still glad

she’s producing alternatives to what today’s publishers pick. Other authors are fighting back, too. The Tuttle Twins’ books feature libertarians like Frederic Bastiat. Julie Borowski’s books teach kids about the free market. All had to self-publish because traditional publishers were hostile to people like them. Even illustrators turned

down Mandel’s books for fear of being “canceled.” “We have a hard time (paying people many thousands of dollars to illustrate books! We’re never going to get a book printed about Amy Coney Barrett with a Scholastic (or) Penguin Random House!” Fortunately, a free market can’t be held back forever.

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, April 21, 2022 — MALKIN from 6 is posted on the Internet home page of a group called ‘AltKids,’ is a caption explaining that the group provides a service ‘in which gay and bisexual kids can find partners or friends of the same sexual orientation.’ To post messages on the site’s ‘Alternative Connections’ page, users must register not just their name and age, but their height, weight, hair color, eye color, address and phone number. “Until last week, after West Seattle citizen activist Linda Jordan and other concerned parents complained to the school board, this online ‘service’ was advertised on the ‘links’ section of the National Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Teachers Network (GLSTN). GLSTN provides support to a chapter in Washington state, many of whose members are employed by the Seattle School District’s Sexual Minority Advisory Council. The Council promoted the national GLSTN office’s web site in literature made available to schoolchildren. “Prior to Jordan’s complaint, Seattle students had unlimited access to the GLSTN site and to the smutty AltKids link. After viewing the photos, the district’s legal counsel, Mark Green, contacted the national GLSTN office, which has removed the AltKids link from its site pending further investigation. Green told me that district computer technicians have blocked the site from public school computers. Kudos to Jordan for making the schools safer. But where were all the district’s guardians? What other exploitative materials are children being exposed to in the name of teaching tolerance and self-respect?” Jordan had been rais-

ing hell about child sex abuse in the Seattle public schools and juvenile court system for years -- and flagged the longtime allegations of young boys who accused powerful King County Superior Court Judge Gary Little of molesting them while he was a teacher and volunteer counselor. She could smell a child predator from a mile away, and she knew their habits. Little committed suicide outside his chambers hours before the Seattle Post-Intelligencer was set to publish a long-suppressed expose of Little’s sex crimes against children and systematic abuse of power. Everything Jordan told me was right. The newspapers and powerful NBC TV affiliate station had covered up Little’s pedo record. So had the statewide Commission on Judicial Conduct. One reporter told The Washington Post that local elites kept quiet about Little’s creepy proclivities and suspicious sleepovers with juvenile delinquents because Seattle was “a liberal city” and “some people refrained from criticizing Little for fear of being accused of unfairness to gays.” And so it has been for the entire kiddie-porn industry that has metastasized in America’s K-12 schools for at least 25 years, when I first reported on that internet pedo recruitment website in Seattle schools. Silence is complicity. Complicity in the sexual exploitation of children in the name of “diversity,” “tolerance” and “safety” is an unconscionable crime. The groomers aren’t even hiding in plain sight. They’ve been out in the open, feeding on your fear and feasting on your children.

METZLER from 7 which are clearly less conservative than isolationist. She appeals to the growing margins of French society which have been bypassed by the prosperity and see themselves the victims of a nation run by elite educated politicians and what are called the Bien Pensants, those who know better! Appealing to France’s dangerously eroding but volatile middle class may be the silver bullet for Le Pen. Cut the high Value Added Tax (VAT), control illegal immigration and moderate fuel prices. These are the people who composed the massive Yellow Vest movement which for nearly a year whose protests starting in 2018, shook the foundations of the state and eventually brought about some lackluster reforms. Countering the high cost of living, Le Pen proposes eliminating the ubiquitous VAT of 20% on food and household items and cutting the tax on fuel and electric to 5 %. Despite his more classically Statist policies, Macron has promoted a surprisingly dynamic labor market and has reduced a stubborn unemployment rate to 7 percent, the lowest level in fifteen years. Equally he has promoted high tech investments to keep pace with the world. In a sense Macron is comfortable in globalized political Summit settings like Davos, Le Pen is more at home in rural farmers markets. Yet Macron sees himself as a key player in the Ukraine war; before the conflict he conducted a high profile meeting with Putin on the eve of the conflict and still has regular calls promoting stillborn diplomacy with

Russia. Nonetheless he told a rally; “I want a France in a strong Europe that maintains its alliances with the big democracies in order to defend itself.” Le Pen on the other hand, once maintained cosy political ties with the Russian leader but now openly condemns the Ukraine war. She’s no fan of NATO, but neither have been most of the French historically. The weekly magazine Le Point wrote, “Macron/LePen; European sovereignty or National Sovereignty?” The bets are down. MAILBOAT from 2 ology, reject common knowledge, and refuse to bar biological males from accessing women’s bathrooms, locker rooms, and competing in women’s sports. During questioning Justice Jackson indicated deviousness, if not outright dishonesty. Despite having advocated Critical Race Theory in the past, she now says she doesn’t know about it. This suggests she’ll inject race into the Supreme Court’s Constitutional responsibility to dispense blind justice. Justice Jackson signaled her intent to support Biden’s attempt to strip Americans of their Second Amendment rights by answering that Americans’ Second Amendment Rights have been established by the Supreme Court which are reversible, rather than confirming that they are Constitutional Rights and thus irreversible. A complete Senate

consideration of Justice Jackson’s elevation to the Supreme Court was constrained because the Biden Administration withheld parts of her official record. This signals that Justice Jackson will support actions contrary to the American people’s will and undermine our “Democracy”. Justice Jackson will likely show leniency for criminals, overrule the laws created by the people’s representatives, limit our Freedoms including our First and Second Amendment Rights, vote contrary to the views of the overwhelming majority of Americans, and overrule the original meaning of our Constitution established by the people. Justice Jackson will vote to overthrow our “Democracy”. Don Ewing Meredith, NH
