Two Simple Questions To The Editor: I have two simple questions for our Congressional “Leaders”. 1. Do you believe the lies that Secretary Mayorkas spewed today alleging that our southern border is secure? 2. Do you support the Presidents proposal to have US taxpayers fund an unlimited piggy bank for Ukraine? Please keep in mind these FACTS: Under this administration, millions of unvetted illegals, drugs, criminals, terrorists, trafficked adults and children have broken into our country, with impunity. Under this administration, our border is no longer secure, and our sovereignty as a country is at risk. Our GDP is declining, while congress continues to spend money we don’t have. You refuse to complete the paid for US border wall, but you are allocating unlimited funds to a foreign country, so they can defend their border and maintain their sovereignty. You were not elected to open our borders to the world. You were not elected to serve and protect the population of the world, while bankrupting our country. You were elected to serve and protect the American people, period. Please, DO YOUR JOB! Michael Petruzziello Major, USMC (Ret) Wolfeboro, NH.

Confusion, Disharmony And Harm To The Editor: Democrats who attack the democratically enacted Florida “Parental Rights” (falsely labelled “Don’t say gay”) and New Hampshire “Right to Freedom from Discrimination” laws misrepresent and slander them. The laws’ speech restrictions that Democrats call Stalinist censorship are limited to certain work situations and minor compared with many employment restrictions. The Democrat Party imposes much stricter censorship and punishment of people’s (not just employee) speech they consider adequately objectionable wherever it happens. Such speech often gets people slandered, banned from social media (e.g., Trump), harassed and/or fired. Speakers with opposing views are shouted-down or cancelled. Information Democrats oppose is often misrepresented or completely censored (e.g., Hunter’s laptop). Florida’s law (https://tinyurl. com/2tbmrzdv) identifies parental rights and control over their children’s education and health, and restricts presenting ageinappropriate information about sex and gender in school settings (even most Florida Democrats support it). Its critics don’t explain which sex acts they want taught or shown to young (K-3rd grade) children and how these help young children. Nor do they explain how creating confusion about gender helps young (K-3rd), impressionable, and

vulnerable children. NH’s law doesn’t restrict teaching slavery (as often falsely claimed), or any actual history of, mostly Democrat, oppression of blacks, e.g., Jim Crow Laws, the KKK, bad schools. The law (https://tinyurl.com/32mx7vpr, Sections 354-A:29-A:34) says that people, including children, cannot be discriminated against, nor can they be identified as superior or inferior to others because of age, sex, race, gender, religion, or many other characteristics. Discrimination harms students and society. Democrats don’t explain how creating disharmony and friction among races, genders, religions, etc. is good; they just want to do it. When so many American schools inadequately educate many students, why do many Democrats demand adding instruction that causes confusion, disharmony, and harm without benefitting students’ successful futures? Yours truly below the summit of Mount Monadnock on the White Dot Trail. Mount Monadnock State Park is located in Jaffrey and Dublin, New Hampshire. Mount Monadnock is a strenuous hike; all trails have rugged steep sections. Reservations for parking day passes are highly recommended and can be purchased at NHStateParks.org. Visitors will be turned away when the park is full. No dogs or pets are permitted anywhere in the Park. From the summit on a clear day there is a stunning panorama with views reaching to the Boston Skyline and the White Mountains. Mount Monadnock, summit elevation 3,165 feet, is the most prominent peak in southern New Hampshire rising 2,000 vertical feet above the surrounding landscape. The mountain is often cited as one of the most popular mountains to hike in the world. It is estimated that more than 125,000 people visit the mountain each year.

The Mountain’s rocky bare summit is the main attraction in the Mount Monadnock State Park. The summit and much of the mountain is actually owned and protected by The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests’ Monadnock Reservation and it is leased to the State. There are 40 miles of trails and many points of interest all over the

mountain and many trailheads. The Park headquarters is located at the shortest and most direct route’s trailhead—The White Dot Trail. Up the White Dot Trail and down the White Cross Trail makes about a 4 mile loop over the mountain with 1,800 feet of climbing. Parking reservations are a smart idea and they can be made online at NHStateParks.

NH Playwright’s World Premiere Benefits Granite VNA & Community Theater When Jay MacNamee attended his 35th college class reunion and heard a classmate’s tale of his near-death inside the World Trade Center on 9/11, seeds for a scene were planted. He wrote that scene and shared it with classmates five years later. Plants took root when those classmates shared their own experiences with death. Now years later, Dying With Laughter, MacNamee’s play-toldin-7-scenes, is mature and will be fully staged for the first time May 20 - 22 as a benefit for Granite VNA and Village Players Theater. It’s likely audience members will see themselves, friends, and family members in the seven scenes of Dying With Laughter. Who can’t--with minor revision, perhaps-- say along with Charles in “Smoke and Mirrors,” “ Thing is, when I look in a mirror...— I see myself as I used to be. Young. Strong. Full head of hair. — A babe in one hand, a beer in the other. —Can you imagine me as a handsome guy?” Dying with Laughter will be perfomed at The Village Players Theater at 51 Glendon Street Friday and Saturday, 5/20 and 5/21 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, 5/22 at 2 pm. Tickets are $20 and will be available at https://www.village-players.com/dying-with-laughter/ and at the door. After the play, there will be a Q & A with members of the beneficiary organizations and playwright MacNamee.

Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Central Baptist Church of Gilford, NH Independent, KJV

Now I Get It In my book “The Flatlander Chronicles”, there is a chapter on my attempt at being a professional yard sale goer. Though by Brendan Smith things didn’t Weirs Times Editor quite work out the way I had planned, I never lost my fascination with this human ritual. It is especially around this time of year when the yard sale phenomena truly starts to take shape again for the upcoming season. You can tell it’s the season when more and more cars look like they have been suddenly abandoned on the side of narrow roadways, the rear ends of the vehicles sticking out into oncoming traffic as though their engines had failed completely at this particular point in time and the vehicle could not make it even one more foot to be safely out of the way of traffic. Soon you realize that the drivers of these cars are really professional yard sale buyers and that they know, when suddenly coming across a home whose yard is full of musty smelling boxes of old board games, ancient framed watercolors, decades old clothing that has been worn and washed hundreds of times and pieces of rusted metal that may or may not have at one time been something, there is not a second to waste. The car needs to be stopped immediately where it is when the site of potential treasures has been spotted. There is not a moment to lose as someone else might scoop up that potential fortune before they do. They have all seen “Antiques Roadshow” and they realize the financial implications of leaving just one piece of rusted

entral Baptist hurch

metal unexamined or not stopping to consider a dime a dozen framed watercolor and its possible value. (Have you ever really stopped and looked at a painting by Grandma Moses?) Of course, as all professional yard sale goers have read the same manual (also explained in my book) and soon the street is filled with abandoned cars, left willy-nilly along the side of the road as those traveling behind, not yet wise to the ways of yard sales, are left to maneuver this newly formed obstacle course. There are also the occasional yard sale shoppers who really are looking for “junk.” This I discovered after meeting my wife, Kim, who is an artist, specializing in sculptures, who finds that one person’s discarded artifact can be repurposed as a work of art. Not necessarily looking for something that might be valuable, but looking for some thing that can be turned into something of value I never did understand all of this myself when I was a younger man, but today I am starting to see the sense of it all from many perspectives, including those of the folks who are actually holding the yard sales. You don’t need to bother throwing things out, you can just get someone to give you money to take stuff away. I used to rush through these obstacle courses, annoyed at the extra time it was taking me to get from point A to point B. Today, I enjoy the diversion, taking the time to notice the goings on at the yard sale. I soon realized, after all these years of buying and accumulating things myself, that I might have some of this same junk somewhere in my basement that all these people were risking life and limb to look at and possibly buy. I also realized, admittedly

having watched enough episodes of “Antiques Roadshow” myself lately, that people are always hoping that they will find, somewhere amongst that pile of musty board games and tattered clothing, a valuable artifact worth tens of thousands of dollars, so they’ll take a chance and buy your stuff. (I do understand the anticipation factor of this myself, not as a yard sale shopper but as a person who has on occasion purchased a Powerball ticket. Though parking is much stricter at the convenience store). So, unlike my youthful days of being annoyed at another small traffic jam because of some overzealous professional yard sale shopper who throws caution to the wind when he spies yet another property lined with stuff, I now think about taking advantage of this phenomenon myself. So, I may just have a yard sale of myself sometime in the future. We will have to wait and see. Of course, I would need to run each potential yard sale item by Kim first, she may already have plans for some of them. If you want to learn more about yard sales and how to go about attending one, you can always pick up a copy of “The Flatlander Chronicles” at www. BrendanTSmith.com or, if you are feeling adventurous, maybe you can find an old, rare copy at a yard sale. You can also check out some of Kim’s sculptures at www. Aborti-Mania: The Perfectly Planned Meltdown

Just as a wave of crucial midterm primary elections kick off around the country this spring, the conveniently scheduled leak of a Supreme Court draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade became America’s new weapon of manufactured mass distraction. Left-wing abortifa agitators descended on the Supreme Court steps in Washington, howling, “Fascist scum has got to go.” by Michelle Malkin Unhinged TikTokers called for “riots,” “gas” Syndicated Columnist and “torches”; “burning it all to the ground” by targeting “all those old white men and the women who support them”; and “mayhem in the streets” that will dwarf the “global protests around George Floyd.” One prototypical Hollywood feminist, Amanda Duarte (a selfdescribed “barren, child-eating sex witch”), tweeted her fantasy involving the “little white daughters” of pro-life “white supremacist lawmakers” getting “raped and impregnated by black men.” The aborticrats are not just nuts. They’re evil. An “anarchist collective” is now instructing women (yes, all of sudden, the left has discovered that biological women are really a thing) how to concoct “do it yourself” abortion pills with horse ulcer powder, corn syrup and confectioners’ sugar. (Yes, these are the same types who made it a punishable offense to talk about alternative COVID-19 treatment ivermectin, the antimalarial drug used safely for three decades around the globe by humans and animals.) But I digress. Right on cue, anti-Christian hatred spread like a raging Colorado wildfire across the internet, from the profane, abortionpromoting rabbi who fumed, “Shame on all who hold the cross” and, “Time to go to war” to thousands of his fellow online vigilantes posting, “F--- Christians” with veiled or outright threads of violence. Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union were at the ready in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New York City’s Foley Square for “impromptu” protests and literal screamfests, where masses of spontaneously gathered rabblerousers carried spontaneously printed, carbon-copy signs from the billion-dollar-funded giants of the Death Lobby. (So much for that “paper shortage” being used to justify ditching traditional paper ballot voting, right? Told you so.) Question the timing? It would be irresponsible not to do so. Survey the political landscape. See MALKIN on 37

The End Of The Road For Roe? This week, an anonymous leaker violated generations of Supreme Court norms by passing on to Politico a draft decision by Justice Samuel Alito in Dobbs v. Mississippi, the case considering overturnby Ben Shapiro ing Roe v. Wade (1973). Syndicated Columnist That draft decision, reportedly supported by a majority of the Court including Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, junks Roe in its entirety, denying the existence of any constitutional “right to abortion”; the majority opinion also trashes Roe’s follow-up case, Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992), which substituted a vague and unworkable “undue burden” test to determine whether or not a law restricting abortion was unconstitutional in place of Roe’s trimester framework. Alito writes, “The Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each State from regulating or prohibiting abortion. Roe and Casey arrogated that authority.” Alito is, of course, correct. Roe is a legal abomination with no support in the Constitution’s text, our nation’s history or any legal precedent. The Supreme Court merely usurped power in order to jam down its political opinions on millions of Americans; Roe didn’t end national controversy on abortion, it froze it in place, preventing states from adopting regulations tailored to their voters. Overturning Roe would merely restore the question of abortion to the states; New York would continue to allow abortion until birth, while Texas would ban nearly all abortion. But according to the Left, the end of Roe will usher in a fascistic hellscape. President Joe Biden called the decision “radical,” and said, “The idea that we’re letting the states make those decisions, localities make those decisions, would be a fundamental shift in what we’ve done.” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called

the decision a “dark and disturbing day for America,” even as Democrats called for attempting to nuke the filibuster to codify Roe into federal law. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., said she was “angry and upset ... The Republicans have been working toward this day for decades. They have been out there plotting, carefully cultivating these Supreme Court justices so they could have a majority on the bench who would accomplish something that the majority of Americans do not want.” Naturally, Warren was unwilling to explain why, if so many Americans support her point of view, she is opposed to allowing them to vote on the issue. But the answer is clear -- as clear as the reason why the Left is perfectly sanguine about someone leaking the draft decision in the first place: Democratic norms, the Constitution, and principle are of no consequence. All that matters is result. The Left has viewed the Supreme Court as a preserve for progressive policymaking for decades. The Dobbs v. Mississippi decision would restore the Court to its original role: an impartial arbiter of the law, rather than a Left-wing superlegislature. And the Left cannot abide that possibility. They would prefer a Supreme Court that imposes Leftist social priorities from above. That is particularly true when it comes to abortion, the most vital Leftist sacrament, an action of holy import. For the Left, abortion represents the power to deny the objective value of human life; it represents willingness to engage in the highest form of self-serving moral relativism. Absence of abortion presents the possibility that actions have moral consequence, that the value of life is not an arbitrary and subjective one, that women and men have duties to their children. All of which challenges their basic worldview. To have that logic subjected to the voters is an indignity the Left cannot bear. And they will use every tool in their arsenal to prevent that possibility.

Home Theft? Did you know that in some states, if you miss one tax payment, local politicians will take your home, sell it and keep all the profits? Really. by John Stossel Tawanda Hall Syndicated Columnist was behind on her taxes. She was on a payment plan but had missed $900. She didn’t expect Southfield, Michigan, to take her entire house because of that. It was worth $286,000 more than what she owed. “I’m still in shock,” says Tawanda

Hall in my new video. “They took my whole house, my whole family’s livelihood.” John Bursch, a lawyer for the county, says while this practice may sound unfair (yes, it sure does), “It’s also unfair to force those who pay their taxes to subsidize those who don’t.” “I pay taxes!” Hall responds. She works as a nursing assistant. “I lift people. I bathe people. I work hard.” When Hall found out she was going to lose her home, she tried to pay off the debt. “I went to the mayor’s office, I went down to the city county building,” she says. “They didn’t want our money. They said no.”

They wanted her house. Taking it should be illegal. “I think it’s unconstitutional,” says Christina Martin, senior attorney at the Pacific Legal Foundation. “The government can’t take more than it’s owed.” The Foundation is suing local governments in six states for this type of home theft. Martin won one case in Michigan’s supreme court. Oakland County had taken an entire home over an $8 debt. Matthew Hodges, the county’s lawyer, argued, “There couldn’t be anything more fair than informing property owners of what is going to happen, giving them time to act and

then letting them make an informed choice.” Martin’s response: “Do you think if he knew he owed $8, he would have paid it? Of course! He didn’t know, and there wasn’t the proper incentive to let him know.” In fact, the town has an incentive not to let him know. Officials rarely tell people: “Pay! Or we’ll take your home!” Towns that do this write notices in legalese: “a tax lien acquired under a certain Instrument of Taking from the Collector of Taxes for the city ... said instrument of Taking covers a certain parcel of land ... “ Hall doesn’t remember receiving See STOSSEL on 37

Putin’s Next Moves Revealed? It’s often said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is a brilliant chess player. Various geopolitical analysts and Think Tank acoby John J. Metzler lytes somberly asSyndicated Columnist sert this “truism” with requisite well stocked bookcases behind them. Yet has Putin’s war against Ukraine, started during the Winter, proved a stroke of genius by the denizen of the Kremlin? Let’s consult Gary Kasparov, the exiled Russian chess grandmaster, to have a sobering view into Russia’s dangerous slide from the end of the Soviet Union back to a dictatorship. We dust off the noted dissident

Kasperov’s extraordinary book Winter is Coming which was published in 2015 (Public Affairs) following’s Putin’s first land grab in Ukraine a year earlier. Kasperov returns us to the heady days following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the crumbling of Moscow’s East Bloc socialist states, and the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union itself in December 1991. He credits the “moral clarity and stubbornness of Ronald Reagan” to have basically undone a moribund Soviet regime which was already the victim of its own economic ineptitude. The Fall of the Berlin Wall and the freedom tsunami which swept Eastern Europe was an extraordinary moment in which to be alive. Except for Vladimir Putin a KGB operative stationed in East Germany, the pe-

riod evoked the collapse not only of communist regimes, but as importantly, heralded the loss of Soviet power and global status. Resetting the myth of Russia’s humiliation has been one of Vladimir Putin’s key nationalist themes. This reality is juxtaposed with the near permanent stream of political rationalizations that Putin’s parallel universe propaganda extols to justify military actions be they in Georgia or in Ukraine. Gary Kasperov cites what he calls the “immoral passivity” that former President Bill Clinton showed when dealing with Ukraine; the signing of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum in which the U.S., Britain and Russia ensured that recently independent Ukraine would give up its nuclear arsenal (the third largest in

Should You Make Extra Mortgage Payments?

You might enjoy owning your home – but the mortgage? Not so much. In fact, you might want to do everything you can to pay it off as quickly as possible. But is that always the best strategy?

Changing The Power Source Retiring The Horse

said to have already been ordered for a Fourth Avenue horse car line in New York City, a line owned by the Vanderbilts. Those horse-drawn cars were costing two cents a mile to run. Horses were made to work and horses retired before they reached a good old age would be horses who weren’t ready to spend all their time in See SMITH on 34

by Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr. Contributing Writer

The horse was once the source of much of New Hampshire’s power supply as well as that of the nation as a whole. Americans relied upon the horse for its transportation, either by riding on its back, being pulled in some type of vehicle, be it sulky, buggy, wagon, coach, sleigh, a city rail-car, or by a horse-powered boat. Horses pulled tree stumps out of the ground and prepared it for growing by powering the plow and harrow that prepared the ground for the crops. Then the horse was used for cultivating and harvesting. I remember the break given the horses at mid-day for water and the treat of oats that was offered as a snack in a feed bag. The day arrived, however, when it was time to retire the horse for another source of power. In the year 1897 there were 300 horses in the town of New

The old power source for machines. Hampton, NH, but by the year 1950 there were only 44 horses in town, a decline of 256. Not nearly as many power horses were in use as there were 53 years earlier. In 1889 a law was passed in New York “allowing any street railway company to substitute electricity, cable traction, or any other force for horse power.” This action, however, did require the consent of the property owners along the line as well as the state railroad commission. One railroad company had worked for a long time to get the law passed so it could run cable traction cars on the city streets. The prediction was if the horse was retired from this type of work there would be

great benefits for the cities. A newspaper article in the Spring of 1889 claimed “Should some other than a live stock motor be adopted generally in our cities, it will mean the release from bondage of at least 10,000 horses. The stabling, feed, etc., for all those will disappear.” The newspaper also claimed that retiring the horses would make the city smell better, make it easier to keep the streets clean and make the streets less crowded. What were the horses going to be replaced with? Electricity seemed to be the favorite choice. That is, electricity coming from batteries on cars equipped to generate electricity. The batteries were

Letters From God This series of Letters From God is an attempt to put the thoughts of God as revealed in the Scriptures as they relate to individuals and the nation of the USA.

cept you and enter into a relationship with you even though you had sinned and disobeyed me. Remember, that I have never sinned and once anyone disobeys me, even once, they are cut off from a relationship with me and since I am the source of life, you begin to die. You don’t have life in yourself, you must get it from me. You are helpless to change your condition, because you can’t be perfect again through your own effort. So, I did something for you. I Covenanted to send my Son, Jesus, as your Messiah and Savior. I allowed him to pay your penalty and bear the consequence of death that you deserve. I Covenanted to forgive your sins and restore you to me and to life (John 3:16). Since my Son, Jesus, didn’t come to the earth until well after the creation and fall of mankind into sin, I gave a temporary provision to cover your sins until he came to remove them permanently. (Hebrews 8:13) This temporary provision was the Old Testament or Covenant. Here are some essentials of that Covenant: It provided only temporary cover for the penalty of your sins to restore our relationship again. It necessitated a priest as a mediator. It required the sacrifice of an animal’s blood which, when given to die in your place was accepted by me to temporarily clear you from your penalty and cover your sins. It had to be offered

continually, daily, since an animal’s blood couldn’t pay your eternal debt (Hebrews 10:2). It provided limited access to me but enough to experience my blessings.

Letters From God

QUESTION: How Are The Two Covenants In The Bible Different? In my last letter you asked me why I have two Testaments or Covenants, an Old and a New? I promised I would show you how they are so different and why the first was a temporary provision for your sins and the second a permanent provision that made the first obsolete (Hebrews 8:7-12). First let me remind you that a Covenant is a commitment I make to do something for you. It is a promise and when I make a promise, I never break my promise. I can’t because I have no evil in me. But there is another part of these Covenants that I made. It is your response to what I do for you. You can experience and enjoy the benefits from my Covenant, to deliver you from your sins, only if you accept my “gift” and ask me to forgive your sins. When you do this, you can be restored to me, and I will give you eternal life. Of course, if you don’t respond with trusting me you will miss forever all of my lifesaving efforts for you (John 1:11-12). What I was committing myself to do in both the Old, temporary Covenant and then the New, permanent Covenant was to ac-

Now for the New Covenant. When my son, Jesus, came and died, because he was eternal, being God and without sin, he was able to pay once for all, every sin of those who relied upon him for forgiveness (Hebrews 9:25-26). Here are some of the essentials of my New Covenant: It provided permanent removal for the penalty of your sins to restore our relationship again It no longer needs a priest as a mediator. You can approach me directly (Hebrews 7:2328). It required the sacrifice of my Son, Jesus’ blood which, when given to die in your place was accepted by me to permanently clear you from your penalty, and remove your sins (Hebrews 9:12). It provided virtually unlimited access to me and my blessings. (Hebrews 4:16) I only withhold the ability to actually see me, since your human eyes can’t look directly at the radiance of my glory. (Even as you can’t look at the Sun with your own eyes). I will provide this also when I bring you home and give you your new body. So, there it is. I have done my part just as I promised. My sacrifice and that of my Son,

Jesus, was given out of our deep love and desire to restore you to us and to the eternal life only we can give. We have sent the Holy Spirit who, along with us, is also God. He is in the world today appealing to you to receive the gift of forgiveness, salvation and eternal life. Now it is up to your response to our Covenants. Please remember that a person, only has access to the blessings of my covenants if they trust me to forgive their sin. If you continue in your sin you will miss my offer of forgiveness and the opportunity to share eternal life with me, your creator God and Savior. Don’t miss this once in a lifetime offer. I love you, God These letters are written by a New Hampshire pastor.

New England’s Wild Birds & Their Habitats

Warblers Are Back!

EXCEPTIONAL CRAFT BEER LIST • COCKTAILS • WINE

In addition to the many warblers that return in April and May, several other of our favorite migrants return as well. I’ve already seen some rose-breasted grosbeaks, orioles (Baltimore and orchard) and thrushes. I’m waiting for my first scarlet tanagers and indigo buntings. It’s an exciting time to be a birdwatcher in New England. The time, however, is fleeting, so get out and enjoy it. As always, feel free to let me know what you see out there.

by Chris Bosak Contributing Writer

The warblers are back and delighting, confusing, and frustrating birdwatchers throughout New England. Warblers are small, usually colorful, passerine (perching) birds that migrate into New England every spring. Many nest here while others continue north to nest in Canada. In the fall, they head to points south such as southern U.S., the Caribbean, Central America or South America. The odd warbler shows up on New England Christmas Bird Counts from time to time, but for the most part, they are gone before the snow starts to fly. To me, the quintessential warbler is the yellow warbler. It is small, brightly colored, numerous throughout the region and sings its ubiquitous song (“sweet sweet I’m so sweet”) over and over from the brush. It is all yellow with some rusty streaking on its chest and belly. Warblers come in all colors, however. Many are mostly yellow and many others have flashes of yellow in their plumage. Some are black and white, and some are mostly brownish. A few are mostly blue. It’s no wonder that the spring migration, highlighted by warblers, is the favorite time of year for most birdwatchers. There are Old World warblers in Europe and Asia, but they are completely different birds from our warblers. There are close to 120 different types of New World warblers. We get about 40-50 species in New England. Approximately 25 warbler species nest in New Hampshire. The fall warbler migration is notorious for frustrating birdwatchers as there are many plumage variations to be aware of. Many of the male warblers have molted out of their crisp spring plumage and sport a much more drab outfit. Females often lack the bright colors

of the males and many first-year birds have not attained adult plumage. But the spring migration can be frustrating as well, particularly when the leaves come out. It can be vexing to hear a bird overhead and not be able to find it. That’s when birdingby-ear skills pay dividends. It’s much easier to find something if you know what you’re looking for. Learning the songs of the many warblers takes time, patience and practice. I’ve been birding for many years and I know a few dozen warbler songs. But that leaves a few dozen left to learn. Small steps.

THE SIMPLE FEAST

WEIRS TIMES’ BEER FINDER

Lo Mein: A Frugal Simple Feast!

by Eric N Gibson Contributing Writer

Being a ¨FRUGAL¨ Scotsman, Yankee, NewEnglandah by birthright (note that NewEnglandah is one word when used as an adjective to describe ¨Frugal¨ and only birds say “cheep”) I like using leftovers and inexpensive ingredients to create good hearty food. I have even been caught perusing the cull shelf in the produce aisle upon occasion, especially during times when dollars need to stretch a bit further. (Did I mention I picked up a bag of five green peppers off the rack the other day for $2.55? They were huge! And no splits or dents! What a bargain!) Just remember, when shopping for food bargains, it ain’t a bargain unless you use it, otherwise it’s just compost waiting to happen. Getting back to our story… sort of. So, I made a simple SlowCooker Chicken Soup the other day. A simple brothy soup with basic diced veggies and bits of chicken gleaned from the bones and stored in the freezer to await a moment of inspired genius such as this. Near dinner time and no egg noodles on the pantry shelf, I took out a box of Spaghetti,

pulled it out of the box a little at a time, broke the lengths into fourths, and cooked it. A pan of quick biscuits (once perfected, this will be a recipe for another article) and dinner was ready. A few scoops of noodles into bowls followed by a few ladles of hot soup, a biscuit hot from the tin, and there you go… Simple yum! But what to do with all the leftover noodles? Great question and the real subject for this Simple Feast… Lo Mein anyone? Lo Mein is probably one of the easiest dishes to create, either from scratch or with leftovers, because, in essence that’s what it is, leftovers! It is also very forgiving, and like so many other things in life; you get out of it what you put into it. So, while you can use

your leftovers for Lo Mein, just remember this one rule as your guide; “garbage in, garbage out, so throw garbage out, not into your food!” I haven’t met too many people that don’t like Lo Mein, after all, what’s not to like? At its basic composition, it’s a noodle, often a protein, and some caramelized veggies all drowned in a spicy, sweet and salty broth-like sauce having all been fried together in some hot oil. And it’s quick! Unless you cut your finger and need to go to the local Urgent Surgeon for a partial nail removal and pick up a few stitches while you’re there, Lo Mein can be made in as little as 30 minutes. (Yep! There’s a story there, but I’m not tellin’!) Getting back to Lo

Mein… let’s see: it’s quick. It’s got carbs sauteed in oil. It’s got protein sauteed in oil. It’s got veggies sauteed in oil. And it’s all laced with a sweet and salty sauce. It checks all the boxes on my list. And what’s a Simple Feast without a little historic perspective? Lo Mein, according to sources, is actually a wheat noodle from China and dates back to around 200 BC. There’s a lot of history on the noodle but for the purposes of this article it’s safe to say that Lo Mein has been coupled with broth, veggies, and proteins for quite some time. And, as is often the case, it has evolved over time to be what it is today, a popular side dish for Chinese Fast Food Cuisine. While some prefer bok choy, shredded cabbage, and beef and others may like celery, bean sprouts, and chicken, there really is no right or wrong ingredient. The only real rule of thumb to follow is to prepare your ingredients in a methodical manner (and do not cut your finger while slicing your veggies). Then serve it up hot (the Lo Mein, not the finger) as a main dish, a side dish, or the only dish at dinner. It is also great cold for that late night snack or lunch the next day. The key to Lo Mein is methodology; make your sauce and hold it off to the side, heat up your skillet or wok, and pour a bit of Sesame Oil into the pan. See FEAST on 16

FEAST from 15 When the oil becomes “watery” it’s ready. Add in your veggies, carrots first to soften along with any other harder veggies to soften. Then caramelize the onions, followed by the remaining softer veggies. Toss in the cooked proteins if desired; bits of cooked chicken, beef, or pork are great. Or really jazz it up with some cooked shrimp. Toss these all together about the pan or wok with half of the sauce and then add the cooked noodles. Make sure you coat it all evenly. Add more sauce, serve it up hot, and there you go! The entire process is only about 20 to 30 minutes. The best thing about Lo Mein is, you are only limited by your imagination and taste

Keep stirring. - Add in Celery, Pepper, and Mushrooms and continue cooking and stirring for five minutes. - Add in noodles and half of the Lo Mein sauce. Toss all to coat completely and heat for three minutes. - Add in Protein if desired and heat for 5 minutes, tossing frequently. - Add the remainder of the sauce and let sit for about a minute or two over the heat. - Stir and serve immediately.

buds as to what goes into it. Aside from a basic sauce and some sesame oil for the “stir fry”, the sky (or your fridge) is the only limit. Lo Mein is a great way to use up leftover noodles, glean the produce drawer, and use that piece of cooked steak, last night’s chicken leg, or maybe just a couple of eggs from your fridge. Sports Sensitivity by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

So NASCAR mandated that driver Denny Hamlin take a sensitivity course. His offense? A tasteless tweet of a Family Guy TV clip in response to some late race moves by Kyle Larson who ended up losing the GEICO 500 at Talladega to Ross Chastain. Larson’s mom has Asian ancestry. Hamlin’s tweet, which he soon deleted, involved stereotyping Asian drivers. Our information age—with its multiple social media platforms—creates a challenging environment for folks who should think before they ink, drink, or plink. Retractions and apologies abound regarding offensive posts. That’s appropriate. Awareness-raising and teachable moments are good. But mandatory sensitivity courses? These make me uncomfortable. Who develops and sanctions these courses? Who teaches them? It all somehow calls to mind Communist “reeducation camps.” Sorry. It’s especially ironic given that NASCAR drivers and fans are particularly subject to ridicule and scorn via the “mainstream” media—which certainly does not treat certain “diverse” elements of the sports world “equi-

Denny Hamlin tably.” For instance, the South Park television character Cartman ripped NASCAR drivers in a season premiere as being “Poor and stupid.” NASCAR people laughed it off. They generally don’t have victim mentalities. And they’re certainly not among those “protected classes” sheltered from humor or ridicule. So no sensitivity courses for the South Park folks. Still, NASCAR jokes do abound amongst elites. QUESTION: “How many NASCAR fans does it take to change a tire?” ANSWER: “None. The rednecks took the wheels off their homes years ago.” Sometimes when en-

tertainers offer opinions they’re told to “shut up and sing.” So, in response to L.A. Laker LeBron James’ ill-advised comments favoring Communist China, commentator Laura Ingraham stated “Shut up and dribble.” Naturally, a firestorm broke out. Her valid observations about James being a dupe for China were drowned out by the inevitable charges of racism. James has uttered more than his share of dubious remarks. He’s deleted more obnoxious tweets than has Denny Hamlin, but James is an NBA star, not a NASCAR star. So no sensitivity classes for King James. (An aside: Can Hamlin get college credit for completing his sensitiv-

ity course?) As a columnist, elected state representative, and professor, I especially value our First Amendment Freedoms of expression. So, I regard the Biden Administration’s proposed Disinformation Government Board with alarm. Censorship routinely occurs in most other countries and is sadly ever-more common in Woke America with its new and intolerant Cancel Culture. Twitter and Facebook routinely pick and choose what types of speech they want to suppress and whom they want to ban. Syndicated columnist Michelle Malkin and her family were even barred from Air BnB because that company didn’t like some of the people she spoke with. Some colleges now hire “Directors of Equity, Diversity, and Social Justice” and the like. But in our Land of the Free—and in an information age—aren’t there already plenty of ways to shine lights and raise awareness about norms, attitudes, and prejudices? Do we really need to institutionalize “social justice” offices and mandate “sensitivity” classes? Especially when such endeavors are inevitably biased as they target the Denny Hamlins while ignoring the LeBron Jameses? Or is that “insensitive” to point out? * “Planning a new roof? Choose a light color for cooling benefits. Also check with your home-insurance company to see what discounts it might offer for different styles or options, like upgraded hurricane clips or fireretardant materials.” -- R.E.W. in Tennessee * Cut a cord of firewood in the spring, and cure it yourself. Store it away from the house and properly care for the wood by stacking it where it will have access to the sun and wind to dry it. Let it season for six months or longer, and you’ll have firewood ready when the temperatures drop again. * “If you’re melting chocolate in your microwave, do yourself a favor: Line the bowl with wax paper or parchment paper. The chocolate is still easy to stir, but when you take it out, you can scrape all the chocolate off the paper so that none is wasted!” -- A.A. in Florida * “Place a bit of clear tape over the spot where you are going to drive in a nail to prevent the nail from cracking drywall. It will go right in. Also, if you’re nailing into wood, drag your nail through some soap (bar soap is fine) before striking it. This does the same thing -- it will

keep the wood from splitting. You can even keep a travel-size bar of soap in your nail apron for just this purpose.” -- P.K. in New Jersey

(NewsUSA) - The COVID-19 pandemic has forever changed the face of America’s workplace. In fact, an increasing number of folks might find their “new office” feels a lot like home -- because it is literally their home. Our post-pandemic “return to the office” may look very different with hybrid or fully remote work models rapidly rising in popularity. Studies support this trend with 83% of workers believing a hybrid model would be optimal going forward, according to an Accenture survey. Further, 87% of managers believe working from home is the future, according to RemoteHow research. While the new dy-

go a long way. * Ease Into Electric: According to Columbia University’s Earth Institute, electric systems are a solution to decarbonize home climate control. Among the most energy-efficient heating and cooling products, electricity-powered ductless mini-split systems, offered by companies including Fujitsu General America, can save as much as 25% on your energy bill. Mini-splits use thin copper tubing to pump refrigerant from an outdoor compressor directly into an indoor air-handling unit, where the air is quietly distributed to the interior space. * Get “Smart” About Climate Control: When it comes to smart home temperaSee HYBRID on 27

Increase Your Perennial Garden’s Beauty This Spring

by Melinda Myers Give your perennials a boost this spring with a topdressing of compost, aged manure, or other organic matter. It’s a great way to revive tired gardens, improve a garden’s overall health, and keep vibrant perennials healthy and blooming. Research found topdressing your garden with compost every year or two provides most, if not all the nutrients that most perennials need. It feeds the soil, which in turn feeds your plants. Let a soil test report and your plant’s performance determine if additional fertilizer is needed. Spring is a great time to add this as well. When purchasing compost, it should appear light and fluffy. Take a whiff, it should not have a strong smell of ammonia, rotting food or another off odor. It should have a rich earthy smell and not be covered in flies or maggots. If jumping worms are a problem in your area, ask your compost provider how they are managing the compost to avoid spreading this invasive pest. Once you have the needed organic matter, you are ready to get started. Pull the mulch back if needed. Keep it handy, so you can put it back in place once you finish amending the soil. WINDOW from 24 sions and they can be installed at about one-tenth the cost of a re-placement window and offer similar performance ratings,” explains Darrell Smith, executive director of the IWFA.Window films, which may be installed in a day or less without significant disruption, are widely seen to save about five to 10 percent of a building’s total energy bill. Many window films, which are all permanently adhered to the glass, are also designed to block 40 to 60 percent of room heat being lost through glass during the heating season while still reducing air conditioning costs by 30 percent during the cooling season. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), cooling and heating account for more than half of the energy use in a typical U.S. home, making it the largest energy expense for most homes. The DOE also points out that roughly 40

percent of unwanted heat that builds up in a home comes in through windows and that windows also account for up to 50 percent of a building’s energy loss. Consumer awareness of the energy saving benefit of window film has increased nearly 50 percent in eight years, from 54 percent of Americans in 2014 being aware that window film can help control interior temperatures, to 79 percent of homeowners this year being aware that window film may improve the energy saving performance of their existing windows today. While window films differ in how they per-

form based on how they are manufactured, they can reduce solar heat gain in your home by as much as 80 percent. This means fewer if any hot spots, more even interior room temperatures and less power consumption so your air conditioning system may keep up with the sun’s heat. This benefit is especially noticeable when the sun is at it’s peak energy transmittance during the day, which is when utility companies have to produce more power to meet the increased peak demand from both homeowners and businesses. HYBRID from 22 ture control, there are Smart HVAC Systems and Smart Thermostats. Smart HVAC systems have builtin Internet capability and can be controlled directly without additional equipment. Smart Home Thermostats create “smart” systems by enabling remote temperature control via a mobile or Internet-connected device or voice-operated home automation system. * Voice Your Preference: Take control of your comfort. Most HVAC manufacturers offer apps that enable systems to be controlled from anywhere using a mobile device. Voice-control capability uses digital assistants, such as Amazon Alexa or Google Home, to verbally dictate home temperatures. Easily controlling the temperature more closely allows homeowners to be more comfortable and improve energy savings. * Find Your Efficient Comfort Zone: Many of us live in homes designed for bigger families, but have yet to downsize. If you find yourself using a fraction of your home on a regular basis, consider upgrading to a zoned ducted, or ductless system. That will allow you to save energy heating and cooling spaces where you and your family don’t spend a lot of time. This will multiply savings as you’re not only needing less cooling, but you also gain from a

more efficient system in the spaces you do still use. * Try Low-tech Fixes: Simple changes can have a big impact. Take advantage of the sun’s energy to heat your home by opening your south-facing curtains at sunrise to make best use of “passive solar gain.” Force down warm air. Denser, cooler air stays closer to the ground, and warmer air rises. So, force it downwards with a low-speed fan. Insulate and fill the gaps. Warmed air leaking out around poorly sealed window frames, power sockets, recessed light fittings,

and other gaps is a big source of heat loss in homes. And thick curtains help to insulate glass at windows. If your family is spending a lot more time at home and your utility bills are soaring, a ductless heating and cooling system is definitely a worthwhile investment. Many Fujitsu systems have an Energy Star rating that is more than twice as efficient as the minimum standard set by the government. MYERS from 23 or compacted soils. Once the compost is in place, do a bit of vertical mulching. Use an auger bit on your cordless drill. Simply drill holes into the soil between plants. This aerates the soil and pushes some of the compost into the soil further boosting your efforts. Vertical mulching helps speed up the process a bit by getting the compost closer to the plant roots and soil organisms

that will help incorporate it into the soil. The openings created in the soil allow air, water and fertilizer to penetrate the soil surface and travel to the root zone. Then be sure to return the mulch you removed from the garden or add mulch if needed. Maintaining an inch or two of organic mulch on the soil surface not only conserves moisture and suppresses weeds; it also continues to improve the soil. As the organic mulch breaks down, it adds organic matter and nutrients to the soil. Investing some time to create and maintain healthy soil goes a long way in making your garden a beautiful part of the landscape. Melinda Myers has written more than 20 gardening books, including the recently released Midwest Gardener’s Handbook, 2nd Edition and Small Space Gardening. GRANGE from 1 I had now fully arrived. Of course, the focus of the Open House was not the blueberry muffins, though they were a key part of the whole; the focus was on the Grange itself, celebrating its unique history. Grange was formed on December 4, 1867, in Washington, D.C., as a fraternal organization fostering mutual cooperation to further the economic fortunes and civic interests of rural, farming communities. Known as the National Grange of the Order of the Patrons of Husbandry, its membership topped 850,000 within a decade and, by the turn of the century, the movement had spawned numerous consumer cooperatives as well as contributed to the regulation of railroads and grain elevators and the introduction of the cooperative extension service, farm credit system and rural free mail delivery. was organized in Exeter in 1873. The Wicwas Lake Grange #292 was established in 1901. The Grange Hall in Meredith Center was built in 1925 and, after burning to the ground, was rebuilt a year later. In August of 2010, the Wicwas Lake Grange was in danger of closing down due to a lack of memberships. A meeting was held and the local Community banded together and

revitalized this historical organization. With a membership drive which led to repairs and renovations to the historic building, the Wicwas Grange is now the largest in the state with nearly 100 members. I wasn’t sure how to prepare for the contest. Should I, like Rocky Balboa, wake up early every morning, chug down a glassful of raw

eggs and then run down to the local bakery and take on a dozen freshly baked blueberry muffins? My wife, Kim, talked some sense into me, making me realizes this was not an “eating” contest but a “tasting” one. There was to be no gluttony like the Fourth Of July hot dog eating debacle at Coney Island I grew up hearing about as a New York native. Here in New Hampshire it was to sample and appreciate the unique recipes, some maybe passed down through generations, of the simple, yet complex, blueberry muffin and render a just verdict. After much contemplation, I decided on the denim shirt. I thought the flannel might seem

a bit ostentatious seeing my means of making a living didn’t quite fit that mold. It had been years since I had a callus on either hand, and that was later identified as a wart. The denim seemed to be the correct choice, though even that was toeing the line some. There was a nice crowd already assembled inside when we arrived. I must admit I didn’t know much about granges or their history, so I picked up a brochure to familiarize myself a bit in case. According to “An Introduction To The Grange” brochure: Granges were the warehouse-buying clubs of the 19th century. Their influence grew into a non-partisan po-

litical lobby that worked to create laws known as Granger Laws that are still important in antitrust litigations today. The Grange is credited for the Rural Free Delivery Program of the Postal Service. Grangers consider education important to the advancement of society and created local libraries to store and share books. Many of these early libraries have become the community public libraries of today. After perusing the brochure, I took a walk around the grange building. There was a good crowd there and many were busy checking out the displays from DD Forge, Meredith Center Maples See GRANGE on 31

This has created a social community service organization dedicated to a better quality on the values that made America great. Grange lessons are just as important today as ever. Rural families enjoy a purpose in life that teaches dignity, industriousness and constructive attitudes towards others. It is also interesting to note that as the overall age of Grange members is aging, the Wicwas Lake Grange has a significant numbers of members under the age of thirtyfive.

GRANGE from 30 and more, including the Grange’s own displays about its history as well as the National Grange’s Dictionary Project which has presented third grade students from across the nation with more than dictionaries, something I never knew about before. The goal of the Dictionary program is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn. Sponsors are encouraged to give dictionaries each year to children in the third grade.

There was also a table with a nice spread of appetizers as well as the blueberry muffins that I was there to judge. I thought it best to keep my distance from them for the moment. I didn’t want an early tasting to cloud my judgement or, perhaps, a little gentle persuasion from one of the contestants if they saw me lingering by their creations. Before the tasting was to begin, we first gathered outside the Grange to raise the American Flag and say the Pledge Of Allegiance, something that I am sorry to say, is not done as much as it should be nowadays. It is nice to see Granges and other institutions still performing this integral ceremony in reminding us of how fortunate we are to live is such a great country. We need more of that. The Grange is learning to adapt traditional

Once the ceremony was complete, it was now time for the reason I was there. Let the blueberry muffin tasting begin. I was ushered into a back room with the two other judges (whose names I will keep secret in case of any blueberry backlash). The door was closed behind us, and we were then faced with five separate paper plates, upon each a blueberry muffin, each unique in appearance and, we were soon to find out, taste as well. I could feel my heart start to beat a little faster. This was it. Over thirty-five years in the making and I was finally trusted with the daunting task of giving fair evaluation of honest-to-goodness, New England baked, Blueberry Muffins. My young self, a Flatlander only recently arrived to live here in Central New Hampshire in the mid-1980s, would have never thought it could be possible. The three of us judges took our job seriously. We carefully cut and tasted each muffin, discussing each creation, taking into careful con-

Now my reputation was really on the line. Then the winner was announced. I held my breath for the audience reaction. I felt a bead of sweat on my forehead. Then there was applause, no protests, all seemed to be in agreement. A wave of relief overcame me. We (I) had done good. My mind drifted to future possibilities now that I had solidified my status as a capable taster. What might be next? A church fair? A chowder festival or maybe even the Big Kahuna… the Sandwich Fair. Maybe I am aiming a little bit too high. Hey, a Flatlander can dream…can’t he?

sideration the flavor and texture of each carefully crafted muffin. There was no time for levity, the fate of each one was in our hands (and mouths) and we knew only one would survive. It wasn’t an easy task. Each blueberry muffin had its own unique presentation. None of them would be turned down at any breakfast table. We discussed the merits of each one and then, a couple even needed an extra taste to make sure we weren’t rushing to judgment. Finally, we reached a consensus. We had chosen a winner. I had successfully completed my very first tasting contest. Though I know it would never be possible considering my heritage, I did feel closer to being a New Hampshire native than ever before. Still, I realized what may be the hardest part was still to come….the announcing of the winner. Had we made the correct choice, what

would the runners up think of us (me). Would I be considered worthy and be invited to judge chowders, chilis or pies in the future? All would hinge on this day. I was surprised to hear that the winner would move on to the State Bake off at State Grange in late October. I never thought my decision could have such far reaching effects.

All kidding aside, it was my pleasure to participate at the Grange’s Open House. Granges are an important piece of New Hampshire history and the work they do is outstanding. Nothing but good comes from the work of your local grange. To find out more about the Wicwas Lake Grange #292 you can find them on Facebook. PATENAUDE from 3 not being turned away is to make a reservation. Space is limited at all the trailheads and visitors without reservations will be turned away when the park is fully booked. Since the hiking season was just starting to pick up and we arrived early, before 8:30 am, it helped us be lucky to get a parking spot. We paid our fee and drove to the day parking area in the Gilson Pond Campground. The day was beautiful and warm and with

light wind. We knew a lot of people would be out so we chose trails that are more lightly used for our route up the mountain. From Gilson Pond we started up the Birchtoft Trail through a lovely hardwood forest and we passed by and hiked along some wonderful stone walls. Then we turned right up the Cascade Link a tenth of a mile before turning left to go up the Spellman Trail. The Spellman Trail is the steepest trail on the mountain and requires a lot of scram-

bling up open ledges and big boulders. It is best to go up this trail not down and only on dry days when it isn’t slippery. It is only about half a mile up to reach the Pumpelly Trail but the trail is very rugged. As we headed up the Pumpelly Trail we enjoyed big vistas in all directions, we could even see the Boston Skyline, something we aren’t used to seeing when we hike. We’d only been on the Pumpelly Trail a few minutes when we met people hiking towards

Becca finds a good place to sit in the sun and out of the wind on Mount Monadnock. There are 40 miles of trails and many points of interest in the State Park. The most direct route to the summit starts at the Park Headquarters on Poole Road. We started from the Gilson Pond Trailhead for a longer hike on less trafficked trails. No doubt that we are standing at the intersection of the Spellman and Pumpelly Trail. The trails are well blazed and there are lots of good trail signs but still take care to follow the trail that takes you where you want to go. The rocky summit can fool people into heading down the wrong side of the mountain.

The lovely view across Gilson Pond up to Mount Monadnock’s Pumpelly Ridge. The Gilson Pond Campground, Monadnock State Park, has 35 sites for tents and pop-ups plus 5 remote hike-to sites. Amenities include toilet/ showers, tent platforms, fire rings and playground. PATENAUDE from 32 good view of the line of people heading up the White Dot Trail. As we drank and ate we tried to identify the distant peaks and bodies of water. Boston’s skyscrapers were still easy to see on this clear day. From here we headed down the White Dot Trail, against the grain of all the other hikers. I have to warn you that all the trails up Monadnock require some on all fours scrambling. White Dot has a steep section that is best to only go up, so most people descend the White Cross Trail.

We carefully downclimbed the steep section when there was a break in the people coming up. At the bottom we went left onto the lightly used Old Ski Path to cut down to the Red Spot Trail that would lead us back the Birchtoft Trail. We weren’t alone on the Birchtoft Trail on our way back. We passed by two large groups of kids. One group was taking a snack break and the other was hustling up the trail. A couple of trail runners came up past us too. When we reached the southeast shore

of Gilson Pond we had nice views across the water up to the Pumpelly Ridge. The Pond Loop is about a mile long. We decided to walk around the pond to end our hike and enjoy the pleasant Spring day outside a little longer. Have Fun. Amy Patenaude is an avid skier/outdoor enthusiast from Henniker, N.H. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, May 12, 2022 — finding himself helping the Smith’s chase after an escaped pig running through the woods. That was proof of stray domestic animals sometimes being a problem in the twentieth century, a phenomenon that still occurs occasionally in the 21st. By-laws adopted by our town in 1835 stated that “No horse, ‘horse kind,’neat cattle or sheep” were to run at large in any highway between the first day

The Tractor takes over. SMITH from 9 a stable or pasture. If those 300 horses in New Hampton had no work to do they might have gotten into mischief and ended up in the town pound. The town pound, however, came much earlier in time. It was in 1797 that the townspeople instructed the selectmen to appoint a poundkeeper. Some might

insist that it was 1779, but I’m quite confident it was in 1797. Even that seems like it was “putting the cart before the horse” when we read that it was in 1809, eleven years later, that it was voted to direct the selectmen erect a pound in a suitable place. Every pound-keeper should have a pound. The “pound” was a place to contain stray

domestic animals until they could be retrieved by their owners. I read that the control of stray animals was a problem in New Hampshire towns from the time the first settlers came until well into the nineteenth century. Somewhere I have a letter sent to my Dad from former Judge Hugh Bownes in which he mentioned calling at our New Hampton home and

the horse or sheep, etc., escape the fine if they didn’t know that their animal had gone astray. Back in the spring of the year 1900 Lewis Perley was slowly guiding his horse through a section of deep mud on Main Street in Laconia just above the railroad crossing when a way to fix that road crossed his mind. So he shared his thoughts with a local newspaper. Mr. Per-

ley said: “Why don’t they take and dump some of their broken stone into this piece of street and see how it will work?” “There’s my neighbor, Chauncey Moses, who used to live up around Rutland, Vt., he says its the way they built roads up there. They don’t stop to scrap off any of the surface but simply put their broken stone directly on top. Sometimes where it is very muddy they put larger stone in at the bottom, then the small pieces are spread over it and the stone is leveled with a hand roller. He says it makes a good hard road and all right in every particular. And I wish they would try the experiment right here.” The horse may have had trouble getting

through the mud, but horses of older times were put to work helping to maintain the roads. The Road Agent’s Report among the official reports of the Town of New Hampton in 1897 has numerous notations of money paid to individuals with teams. The road agent, J.M. Flanders, Jr., was paid $75.60 for 25 days of labor with a team of horses during the month of May. Other men were paid for there labor with team at different times throughout the year. I’m assuming that the word “team”usually means team of horses but it may have included oxen which also provided some of the power for road work. Horses are still called upon for some work details, mainly in competitive sports and pleasure riding to benefit mankind, but most of the power for the old jobs have been taken over by other power sources, though the amount of energy used might still be measured by horse power. It has been many moons since I’ve heard the commands of a driver of work horses saying “Whoa,” as he pulls on the reins, to stop his team. Or the turning command of “Gee” to go left, or “Haw” to go right and maybe a quiet “Giddup” or just a clucking sound from the driver’s tongue and cheek to let the team know it is time to start moving. I know, horses still live, but “ The old grey mare, she ain’t what she used to be, many long years ago.” Robert Hanaford Smith welcomes your comments at danahillsmiths@yahoo.com

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, May 12, 2022 — MAILBOAT from 2 scarred the human conscious about the horrifying experimentation forced on incarcerated individuals in concentration-camps as if they were laboratory animals from December/9 1946 through August/20/1947? Check it out at https://thenewamerican.com/ magazine/tna3808/ page/213183 In an open letter of 9/16/2021 “ Rabbi Hillel Handler, Hagar Schafrir, et al. likened the global administration of the Covid vaccines and their consequent side-effectsinduced deaths to the infamous Nazi doctor Josef Mengele’s human experimentation. In blindness, lacking knowledge of this true ugly history, too many Americans fail to feel the full impact of the promise of a repeating result of human misery. What are the consequences of the answer that America’s Frontline Nurses Founder, Nicole Sirotek received from her colleagues in 2020 when she ask them: “Why Covid-19 patients were being denied life saving-treatment?” History repeats. But I am confident that when a sufficient number of individuals learn the lessons from the history of the post WWII Nuremberg Trials: “they will be horrified as I am about the answer that Sirotek received :“We’re just following orders.” Our citizens over the past century have been victims; unknowingly enduring the manufactured rewritten history and moral degeneracy in schools , TV and media that have created self promoting would be dictators ascending to power striving to play God who have ruled by inverting reality: obedience to the state is liberty. The state is your

mamma and daddy. Today’s citizens have been trained in leadership that just follows “executive orders” as opposed to constitutional law passed by Congress. Such basic inversions of reality have been pounded into the minds of our youth for the past hundred years: “There is no God, there is no innate right or wrong, and man is a graduate beast.” One wonders? Is this an accident? Or could it be on purpose that this agenda is actually the three basic tenets of communism that are taught in our schools? No matter the reason, this move to turn our government “upside down” attacks the foundation of Americanism and promises tyranny if it continues to be taught to the youth of our nation. It must be stopped and parental control of what is taught to children must be restored. Here we are today standing at a moment in history that can either aluminate the human times with the preservation of liberty, or eliminate the foundation of liberty. As individuals , liberties future depends on each of us . Our responding actions when our God given liberties are infringed by “above the law” government mandates that are mor-

ally wrong , must challenge these violations. Otherwise, the verdict is written in stone: if we don’t, we become a part of the tyranny that our silence is inviting. As the beautiful patriotic hymn draws a picture of the source of the power of our Founders : “Our Fathers God to thee , Author of liberty. Of thee I sing. Long may our land be bright with freedoms holy light, protect us by thy might. Great God our King.” May the strength of these Courageous warriors of truth and dependence on God that won our liberty, once again rule. We must stand today for the power of biblical truth to become the “moral backbone” of our government. Otherwise: the dangerous trend that “We we are just following orders” is a oneway ticket to the dead end street of tyranny. Russ Payne Merrimack, NH.

Why Are They Silent?

To The Editor: The southern border is open and has been for almost two years resulting in two million immigrants entering the country unchecked. This is a serious matter that deserves attention

and commitment by Senator Maggie Hassan and Representatives Chris Pappas and Annie Kuster. The disgusting truth is that they have remained silent until now. The upcoming election is the catalyst plain and simple. No country can exist without borders that protect our sovereignty. People have always been welcome here from all over the world however United States Law established by Congress set the rules. At the present time the rules are not being respected while elected officials look the other way. Some of the people making their way into this country have terrorist ties while other are in the illegal drug trade which originates from China. This is ironic because anyone dealing drugs in China is sent to jail for years. The big question is why do these elected politicians do nothing while this is happening. They took the same oath that the President took which is to protect this country and its people according to the Constitution. Kenneth L. Bowers Wolfeboro, NH.

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, May 12, 2022 — METZLER from 7 autocratic ambitions. As the chess master warns, “The mullahs, monarchs and dictators are pushing back against the threat to their medieval ecosystems”. While Winter is Coming provides the grand sweep of Putin’s postSoviet actions, another fascinating account Putin’s Playbook; Russia’s Secret Plan to Defeat America (Regnery 2021) offers a troubling deep drill into Putin’s methodology and it’s political manipulation of the USA. Author Rebekah Koffler, a Russian born U.S. intelligence expert who worked with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), takes the reader behind the shroud of near-timeless Russian intelligence operations which have at their core, destabilization of the USA. Koffler, an ethnic Russian from Kazakhstan, writes with the “sixth sense” in viewing contemporary Russian intelligence and influence operations. Concerning Moscow’s interference in the 2016 U.S. Presidential elections, she boldly asserts, “As Putin’s playbook shows, Russia was trying not only to hurt both candidates Clinton and Trump, but to harm ordinary Americans by destabilizing our society through deceit, disinformation and agitation.” She adds later, “Sabotaging U.S. elections serves Russia’s broader purpose of subverting, destabilizing, and if necessary, defeating our military.” Putin plans for a weakened United States, “immersed in political disfunction, struggling economically, bogged down in eternal conflicts, alienated form

its allies, and torn by radical, religious and ethnic tensions.” In other words stir the pot and keep it boiling; create mayhem and discord on all sides to weaken the democratic middle. Koffler’s long list of past and ongoing Russian active measures and subversion offer a clear warning light to Washington policymakers on both sides of the aisle. The third book in my troika of Russia reads is the slender but stunning account The Russia Trap; How our Shadow War with Russia could Spiral into Nuclear Catastrophe. (Thomas Dunne Books, 2019). George S. Beebe former CIA Director of Russia analysis resets the stage on how the USA and Russia could blunder into WWIII. Written pre-Ukraine conflict, the book offers a sobering and deeply serious account of how political perceptions and misperceptions can quickly deteriorate into real conflict. He asserts when “high risk tolerance is overlaid against a background of increasingly unconstrained shadow warfare between two nuclear powers in the cyber, military, economic and information domains, they assume disproportionally dangerous implications.” We’re watching this unfold now in Ukraine. We must be wary. John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. He is the author of Divided Dynamism The Diplomacy of Separated Nations: Germany, Korea, China.

MALKIN from 6 Earlier this week, leftwing NPR reported that President Joe Biden “is losing support from Gen Z.” The libs in deep-blue Massachusetts are sick of him, too, according to a new Boston Globe/ Suffolk University poll. Another lib outlet, government-sponsored PBS, reported last week that “independents favor the GOP right now” because “runaway inflation is hitting everyone’s wallets and has given Republicans a political edge”; pollsters also found that “about half of parents with children under age 18 said they don’t like how (Biden) has handled COVID.” Despite the Herculean attempts of the White House, Black Lives Matter and woke media to gin up fear over “white supremacy” as the biggest threat to our nation, unbrainwashed citizens are revolting en masse against antiwhite critical race theory in higher education and “social and emotional learning” (translation: thought control and behavior modification) in K-12 schools. BLM’s multimillion-dollar grift has now hit mainstream exposure. And the Biden Disinformation Governance Board, headed by TikTok warbling bubblehead and Hunter Biden laptop-whitewasher Nina Jankowicz, has become a laughingstock across the board. The engineered and coordinated aborti-mania also comes at an opportune time for Biden’s Big Pharma allies. Just this week, a new study has documented more COVID-19 vaccine-induced heart infections. New surveillance data from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System confirms a “statistically significant increased risk for Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) in the 3 weeks

after receipt of the Janssen/Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.” And profiteering Pfizer, which is pushing Biden to approve COVID-19 shots for children under 5, was forced to release more than 90,000 pages of jab data it tried to cover up. Make no mistake: There are no coincidences, and conspiracies are not just theories, especially in an even-numbered election year with a crumbling, bumbling commander in chief and his minions clinging to power. STOSSEL from 7 “anything other than, ‘Get out.’” Despite the Michigan Supreme Court ruling, a judge dismissed Hall’s case because the government itself did not make the profit. In her case, the town gave her home to a private business. That business, the Southfield Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative, sold the house and kept the money. The business says it uses the town’s donations to maintain attractive, safe neighborhoods, protect and raise property values. “ G o v e r n m e n t shouldn’t be able to steal from its own people and then give it over to their friends,” says Martin. I ask her how she knows Southfield Neighborhood Revitalization officials are “friends” of the politicians. She replies, “The company is literally run by

the mayor and the city administrator!” I wanted to interview them. Neither would agree to talk to me. I’m surprised how common this kind of government home theft is. If you are behind on taxes, even just $10 behind, 11 states allow local governments to sell your home and keep all its value. In Massachusetts, a 66-year-old grandmother is “sleeping in her car right now,” says Martin. “The city took her property, turned around and sold it within days of evicting her.” Although her debt was just $30,000, they sold her house for $242,000 and kept the difference. The Pacific Legal Foundation has gotten three states to stop engaging in this home equity theft. Good.
