Deep In The Heart Of Texas by Mike Moffet Sports Columnist

Our Sports Columnist, Mike Moffett, reports on his recent trip to Texas and its unique sports culture. The great city of Austin, Texas, hosted the annual convention for the North American Society for Sports Management earlier this month and yours truly was among the attendees. While it was nice to experience the many interesting seminars and network with colleagues from around the country, it was also wonderful to sample a different

sports culture. Professional development, if you will. Texas is football country to be sure, and NASSM scheduled an event at Darrell Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium, which has a seating capacity of over 100,000. Built in 1924, the stadium was dedicated to Texas’ World War I veterans, and the 5280 Texans who gave their lives in that conflict have their names permanently displayed in bronze outside the north end zone. I walked an upper level of the legendary edifice, and felt the presence of many gridiron ghosts. The

Ham Radio operator Dana Ashton goes over some basic emergency radio techniques with some Boy Scouts at a recent Amateur Radio Operators’ “Field Day.” This year’s 24-hourlong event, which is open to the public, will take place on the weekend of June 22nd and 23rd on the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum property in the Weirs next to Funspot. Who ya’ gonna call? Central New Hampshire Amateur Radio operaters--Hams!”, that’s who! Despite the Internet, cell phones, email and modern communications, every year whole regions find themselves in the dark when disaster strikes. Tornadoes, fires, storms, ice and even the occasional cutting of fiber optic cables leave people without the means to communicate. In these cases, the one consistent service that has never failed has been Amateur Radio. These radio operators, often called “Hams,” provide backup communications for everything from the American Red Cross to FEMA and even for the International Space Station. Your Town’s “Hams” will join with thousands of other Amateur Radio operators showing their emergency capabilities on the weekend of June 22-23. Over the past year, the news has been full of reports of Ham Radio op-

erators providing critical communications during unexpected emergencies in towns across America, including the California wildfires, winter storms, tornadoes and other events world-wide. When trouble is brewing, Amateur Radio’s people are often the first to provide rescuers with critical information and communications. On the weekend of June 22-23, the public will have a chance to meet and talk with Central New Hampshire Ham Radio operators and see for themselves what the Amateur Radio Service is about, as Hams across the USA will be holding public demonstrations of emergency communications abilities. This annual event, called “Field Day” is the climax of the week long “Amateur Radio Week” sponsored by the ARRL, the national association for Amateur Radio. Using only emergency power supplies, Ham operators will construct emergency stations in parks, shopping malls, schools and

backyards across the country. Their slogan, “When All Else Fails, Ham Radio Works” is more than just words to the Hams as they prove they can send messages in many forms without the use of phone systems, internet or any other infrastructure that can be compromised in a crisis. More than 35,000 amateur radio operators across the country participated in last year’s event. “The fastest way to turn a crisis into a total disaster is to lose communications,” said Allen Pitts of the ARRL. “From the earthquake and tsunami in Japan to tornadoes in Missouri and Oklahoma and the recent bombing of the Boston Marathon, Ham radio provided the most reliable communication networks in the first critical hours of the events. Because Ham radios are not dependent on the Internet, cell towers or other infrastructure, they work when nothing See ham on 10

Ayotte & Shaheen To The Editor: Senator Kelly Ayotte voted against useless, ineffective and expensive background checks for innocent American citizens who wish to exercise their second amendment right to own a firearm.

Our Story

She is now being vilified almost hourly by commercials running on WMUR-TV and paid for by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Bloomberg has publicly stated he will use his vast wealth to “buy” gun control. My suggestion to the Mayor is stick to the job of running the mess you have on your hands, and keep your nose out of New Hampshire. The Newtown “shooter” Adam Lanza tried to purchase a weapon and was turned down as a result of a background check. He killed his own mother and stole her weapon to commit his dastardly deed, accentuating the uselessness of background checks. The commercials decrying Senator Ayotte as being opposed to the folks, claim 86% of New Hampshire residents are in favor of background checks. Where do that get that number? If they repeat it it often enough then some people will accept it as fact. Several national polls put the concern for gun control at about 4%. The economy and jobs are a greater concern to the majority of Americans. Our other Senator Jeanne Shaheen has taken a different approach on weapons. Her weapon of choice is big government. She is one of a dozen Senators that wrote letters to the IRS demanding that they investigate all those horrible innocent folks that dared

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Learn By Example

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

When I was a boy, I was always told to respect my elders since they were full of wisdom and I could learn a lot from them. For the most part this was true. As I got older, I learned to separate the good from the bad and make my choices. Growing up today, there really aren’t a lot of good role models to choose from in modern culture and especially in Washington D.C. Based on the shenanigans going on there lately, I’m convinced that, if I was exposed to a lot of this when I was growing up, I may have gone about things a lot differently in my life. Growing up Roman Catholic, going to confession may have been different if I followed the lead of Lois Lerner from the IRS. “Bless me Father for I have sinned.” “And what is your confession, my child.” “I’m sorry Father, but my lawyer has advised me not to answer that question as it may affect my chances of getting to heaven.” Even if I did decide to confess my sins, I would argue out each one in detail as to the actual severity of them, thus, helping to bring down my penance by at least a couple of Hail Mary’s. If that didn’t work I would argue that I didn’t know they were sins at the time.

“I didn’t actually disobey my mother, father. She never made it clear to me that I was actually supposed to clean up my room. Her words to that effect were not in line with how I had heard mothers of my friends ask them to clean up their rooms, so I never made that distinction in my own mind.” Of course, during this confession, I would be uploading a secret video to You Tube about the whole thing. This whole Benghazi mess would also have a great influence in how I handled some situations. It would be a great lesson to use if you were ever in a fender bender. “Listen officer, she was stopped at a light, I wasn’t paying attention. I slammed on the brakes too late and I crashed into her. Sure there was damage to both cars. But that was over fifteen minutes ago. WHO AT THIS POINT IN TIME REALLY CARES ANYMORE?” If I was ever stopped for speeding, not that I would ever do that, I could use some of these tactics as well. “Do you realize how fast you were going, sir?” “I’m sorry officer, but until I have studied all of the pertinent material regarding the incident I won’t be at liberty to make a qualified judgement on that. I will have to get back to you about that.” Of course, that will never work as conveniently as it does on Capitol Hill, but it would be worth a shot. Using examples by our leaders during the Benghazi tragedy would have also been helpful to me as a teenager in trying to explain to my parents something that happened before they got wind of it. “Mom, You might be

getting a call from Bill’s parents about something that happened at his party last night. I’m not really sure how it all started but I think it had something to do with a video but at this point I can’t be one hundred percent sure. I’ll have to get back to you about that.” Pleading the fifth would have gone a long way in making things less complicated in my life. Going to the local shopping mall as a child and sitting on Santa’s knee, a lot of that stress could have been eliminated if I knew in advance that I wouldn’t have to make Santa believe that I had been a good boy all year. All I would have to do when confronted with that inevitable question was plead the fifth and all would have been fine. Even if Santa did have his list, he would never be able to catch me in a lie. More simply, I could have said: “I’ll have to get back to you on that.” Still, none of these scenarios would ever have to be this complicated. The simplest way to be just like our leaders in Washington is to use the one phrase that they expound the most. The one phrase that these people in charge of everything use when asked to explain something that they are responsible for. “I don’t know.” I’m pretty sure I’ll being using that one from here on in. I’ll have to get back to you about that. Brendan Smith’s new book “The Flatlander Chronicles” will be released later this summer. You can follow his detective serial “The Case Of The Missing Flatlander” at www.foolinnh.com.

LINCOLN - Officials at the Hobo Railroad in Lincoln, NH and Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness, announced they have partnered with Bank of New Hampshire to offer a unique and entertaining environmental education program called “Nature by Rail” in June, July and August this year. Utilizing the Hobo Railroad as a “rolling classroom”, the environmentally-based program will be presented by Instructors from Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. “Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is thrilled by this new partnership with the Hobo Railroad,” said Amy Yeakel, Education Program Director at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. “It provides a fun and engaging way to reach audiences with information about New Hampshire’s natural world. The trains pass through beautiful and wild areas that will be wonderful for passengers to learn about and appreciate. We are grateful to Bank of NH for their support and to the Hobo Railroad for such a strong collaboration.” Thanks to the generosity of Bank of New Hampshire, the Nature by Rail program will be available to everyone who purchases tickets aboard the 11:00am, 1:00pm or 3:00pm trains on three Saturdays this summer June 29th; July 13th and August 10th. Instructors from Squam Lakes Natural Science Center will share information regarding the wildlife and vegetation that surround the train as guests of all ages relax and enjoy the program in the comfort of the Hobo Railroad’s restored vintage coaches. “Bank of New Hampshire is proud to partner with both the Hobo Railroad and Squam Lakes Natural Science Center to bring

Lying Liar Anthony Weiner’s Underage Girl Problem Touchy, touchy. Despite Team A n t h o n y Weiner’s best efforts at political rehabilitation, there’s just no way to shore up his by Michelle Malkin sorest scanSyndicated Columnist dal spot. As the New York Post reported this week, Weiner had a bit of a snit fit when a local Democratic official boldly slammed his sexting habits with underage girls. Chris Owens, the Dems’ state committee member in northwest Brooklyn, called out the skeezy ex-congressman at a mayoral candidate forum. “I am outraged and disgusted by you,” Owens told Weiner. “Both by what you did and by the fact that you have the arrogance to run for mayor. I want to understand how you explain to us how you used a public facility to tweet offensive material to ... minors you did not know, you then lied about it ... and now you come back.” The hubristic horn-dog bared his teeth, got “snippy” and responded by snarling defensively that he’s “going to win this election and I’m going to govern this city really well.” Don’t get ahead of yourself there, Tweety Boy. If more rankand-file Democrats join Owens in focusing like a laser on Weiner’s underage-girl problem instead of soft-pedaling his “past issues” as “consensual” “online dalliances,” Icky-rus will fall again. Weiner’s puff-piece enablers at The New York Times have done their best to downplay the scandal’s sordid pedo angle. He’s just a luvin’ hubby and conscientious dad who came clean about a

momentary lapse in social media judgment. And he accepts responsibility, dontcha know? No crime, no foul, right? Not quite. All the celebutante fashion photo shoots with wife Huma Abedin can’t insulate Weiner from the truly trashy truth. Remember: Democratic women on Capitol Hill stood by Weiner and his Twitter tawdriness until a critical moment almost exactly two years ago this week: It was the moment news broke that among the bevy of online groupies he hit on, Weiner had communicated with at least one teenage high school student in Delaware. Weiner had flirted with the underage girl through Twitter direct messages using a macho line about donning “cape and tights” -- a quip he had also used with an adult woman with whom he had exchanged raunchier sexually explicit messages. Conservative blogger Patrick Frey (patterico. com) first uncovered the evidence. Fox News then broke the news in the mainstream press that Delaware police had visited the girl’s home and questioned her about her online communications with Weiner. The 17-year-old said she had met Weiner on a school trip to Washington. At his watershed press conference circus on June 6, 2011, Weiner claimed he “never had an intention of having a relationship with underage women” and blustered that the girls he communicated with “weren’t young, per se.” Per se? Just a few days later, Weiner was forced to admit that he had exchanged “at least five private messages on Twitter” with the Delaware girl, not two messages as initially reported. He also denied that any messages to the teen were “explicit” or “inde-

French Economic Malaise Deepens PARIS—Just a year after the Socialist Party regained the Presidency, the winner and unassuming new occupant of by John J. Metzler t h e E l y s e e Syndicated Columnist Palace (White House) Francois Hollande, may have wished he was still in the political opposition. After all, it is easier to critique than to govern, especially in a country battered by the waves of domestic left-wing union demands, global recession, and a lingering Eurozone currency crisis. Not that anyone on the left or right planned to put President Hollande, Monsieur Normal, on a political pedestal reserved for Mitterrand or de Gaulle, but all the same governing France holds less charm than criticizing its former government. President Hollande’s Socialist’s face the usual bouillabaisse of problems; massive public spending, swelling unemployment , and negative economic growth. Stated another way government spending is Europe’s largest at 57 percent of GDP, the unemployment has surged to 11 percent, and economic growth in the first quarter this year was minus 0.4 percent. Add slower public benefit increases which have infuriated the Left, higher youth joblessness which hurts everybody especially Afro/Arab communities, and the albatross of poor economic competitiveness which dulls France’s global standing , and you have a brewing tempest. Paris still glistens as the City of Light, but with far more beggars and ubiquitous homeless despite the social nets of state welfare. More small shops are closing and the “A Louer” for rent signs bloom everywhere. The hobgolblinized fear of Anglo/Saxon globalization remains part of the social climate. Indeed France’s ubiquitous polls have not been kind to Francois Hollande; his national popularity stands at 25 percent, the lowest recorded for any president in over a half-

century. Fewer than one in five people who voted for Hollande’s Socialist party, are happy with “Monsieur’s Normal’s” first year in office, and there are four to go. “The more France falls into recession, the more Francoise Hollande goes into denial,” laments Nicolas Baverez in the weekly magazine Le Point. The lack of competitiveness for French business seems a major concern. We are not talking about Airbus here, or the splendid array of champagnes, wines, perfumes, and luxury products for which France can be justifiably proud. It appears that these deluxe products are being scooped up by Japanese, Mainland Chinese, Russians and Gulf Arabs, as fast as they are produced. The French daily newspaper Le Figaro exclaims,” China’s Assault on the top global brands.” Mainland Chinese investment is flowing into France and has bought into the country’s iconic if somewhat passé Club Med resorts, and other brands. It’s part of an overall 21 percent growth in Chinese investments in Europe. Buying into the best is not the problem as much as the business competitiveness of the rest; large state owned or subsidized auto producers such as Renault, Peugeot and a host of other companies which are simply not competitive given high wages and higher social welfare and benefit obligations. Many businessmen refuse to start new enterprises because of the webs of red tape and regulations, thus causing a dearth of job creation. Foreign investments overall in France fell during 2012 to 471 from 540 the previous year, according to Ernst & Young. On a different level, higher taxes and the shortfalls of the state medical system have seen a net emigration of French medical doctors. Over the past few years, 876 doctors have moved to the French-speaking parts of neighboring Belgium while another 465 have gone to Quebec in Canada. A further 492 went to Great Britain, 433 to Germany and a further 290 to Italy.

No doubt France remains a well-off and prosperous land. Sadly what is happening is a slow but certain deterioration of the lifestyle, a loss of competitiveness and an erosion of global attractiveness.

John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. He is the author of Transatlantic Divide ; USA/Euroland Rift? (University Press, 2010).

Abstract Immigrants One of the many sad signs of our times is the way current immigration issues are discussed. A hundred years ago, the immigration conby Thomas Sowell troversies of Syndicated Columnist that era were discussed in the context of innumerable facts about particular immigrant groups. Many of those facts were published in a huge, multi-volume 1911 study by a commission headed by Senator William P. Dillingham. That and other studies of the time presented hard data on such things as which groups’ children were doing well in school and which were not; which groups had high crime rates or high rates of alcoholism, and which groups were over-represented among people living on the dole.

Such data and such differences still exist today. Immigrants from some countries are seldom on welfare but immigrants from other countries often are. Immigrants from some countries are typically people with high levels of education and skills, while immigrants from other countries seldom have much schooling or skills. Nevertheless, many of our current discussions of immigration issues talk about immigrants in general, as if they were abstract people in an abstract world. But the concrete differences between immigrants from different countries affect whether their coming here is good or bad for the American people. The very thought of formulating immigration laws from the standpoint of what is best for the American people seems to have been forgotten by many who focus on how to solve the problems of illegal immigrants, “living in the shadows.”

Matt Birk: Principled - Obama: Protect a Woman’s Right Another grandson graduates from high school. Ethan Todd Howland, it truly does seem like yesterday by Niel Young Advocates Columnist when we were walking around the lawn and I pointed to the poppy plants. And you wanted to know “where’s Nanny’s? Ethan’s caring and that smile – Poppy is proud. ******** His Principles, Catholic faith, and speaking the truth -that is pro-football player Matt Birk of the Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens. I am quoting from a Commentary by Joel Gehrke of the Washington Examiner. JOEL: “Obama spoke at the national Planned Parenthood conference this year. OBAMA: “As long as we’ve got to fight to make sure women have access to quality, affordable health care, and as long as we’ve got to fight t o p r o te c t a wo m a n ’ s right to make her own choices about her own health, I want you to know that you’ve also got a president who’s going to be right there with you, fighting every step of the way. Thank you, Planned Parenthood. God bless you. God bless America. MATT BIRK now retired, chose not to accompany his team to “Obama’s House. Birk: “I have great respect for the office of the presidency but about five or six weeks ago, our president made a comment in a speech and he said, ‘God bless Planned Parenthood. I’m very confused by Obama’s statement.

“For God to b less a place where they’re ending 330,000 lives a year? I just chose not to attend. Matt Birk is a pro-life Roman Catholic. Birk: “Planned Parenthood performs about 330,000 abortions a year. I couldn’t endorse that in any way. Now that is a man with principles! Unique isn’t he? ******** Speaking of principles: An op-ed last Friday in the NH Union Leader penned by Steve Duprey, John Stabile, Wayne Semprini, Fergus Cullen and Wayne MacDonald: “Why Republicans should support immigration reform “Many of our fellow Republicans aren’t sure what to think of the Gang of Eight immigration reform bill being debated in the U.S. Senate. As former chairs of the New Hampshire Republican Party, we support the modernization effort led by conservative leaders, including U.S. Sens. John McCain and Marco Rubio, and think the plan deserves backing from other Republicans, too. You mean McCain? Isn’t he the candidate who endorsed his opponent when he said he did not fear an Obama presidency in 2007? I am sure that McCain has a very low opinion of principled conservatives who serve in the US Senate. Do the names Ted Cruz and Rand Paul ring a bell? Try to follow this: “The Gang of Eight bill increases the number of legal, skilled immigrants, helping high-tech employers such as Merrimack’s GT Advanced Technologies hire the engineers they need to grow our economy and create

jobs for other Americans. It re-establishes a guest worker program that will benefit New Hampshire apple growers and ski areas that depend on seasonal laborers. And it provides provisional legal status — but not necessarily citizenship — to 11 million undocumented people, thousands of whom live among us as neighbors. NH UL poster FRAN MCLAUGHLIN: “What’s that bit about ‘they live among us’? It would be more accurate to say They live among you.. I don’t think there are many flop houses in their neighborhoods. Oh, and the bit about the illegals don’t get welfare, 2 words; Aunt Zeituni. FON writes: “Those men don’t understand is that the rule of law matters in a fundamental way that nullifies any potential good that could come from circumventing it. They also continue to conflate “illegal aliens with legal immigrants, which is a slap in the face to all those who come to the USA following our laws. They also don’t want to address the economic distortions of having millions of lowskill people in our country illegally. A free market always finds ways to match labor demand with workers able to meet that demand. It would do so in this case as well, if we could see straight to shut off the flow if illegals and hold those illegal aliens accountable for breaking our laws. Since this oped was planned for discussion in hour 2 of The Advocates last Saturday and you missed it, the podcast to hear that hour is at wezs.com.

Longhorns have won 32 conference titles as well as national championships in 1963,1969,1970 and 2005. The Texas State Capitol Building is a short walk from the stadium, but I took the scenic campus route to see the famous Texas Tower, where Charles Whitman killed seventeen people and wounded thirty-two others in a mass shooting

rampage on the afternoon of August 1, 1966. The Capitol was fascinating to visit. I wanted to get a photo of the portrait of former Yale cheerleader George W. Bush, who’d owned the Texas Rangers baseball team before serving as Texas governor from 1994-2000. Like the New Hampshire State House, the Texas Capitol hangs paintings of all its former governors. I was surprised to see that Texas

had twice elected Miriam Ferguson—a WOMAN! —as governor, in 1924 and 1932. How progressive! (It wasn’t until 1996 that N.H. elected a female chief executive.) I later learned that Miriam was the husband of former Governor James Ferguson, who was impeached and removed from office during his second term. As part of his conviction, he was not allowed to hold state office in Texas again. After her husband’s conviction, Ma Ferguson ran herself for the office. She told voters that said she would follow the advice of her husband and Texas thus would get “two governors for the price of one.” A campaign slogan was “Me for Ma, and I Ain’t Got a Durned Thing Against Pa.” OK. Maybe the Texans were not that progressive after all. I picked up a local paper and read a sports column reminiscing about the Dallas Chaparrals ABA hoop team, which later became the San Antonio Spurs. Despite the fact that the Spurs are in the NBA Finals, some feel they are the third most popular NBA team in Texas, behind the Dallas Mavericks and the Houston Rockets. (The Spurs are easily the SECOND most popular

Beyond sports, I also sought to expand my cultural horizons by visiting a Honky-Tonk. As an erstwhile country music fan and loyal listener of Moultonborough’s WSCY—Super Country 106.9 FM—I’d heard the term before but wasn’t quite sure what a

Honky-Tonk was. Turns out it’s a southern bar that plays country music. The concierge at the Hilton shared that Austin’s “Broken Spoke” had been voted “Best Honky-Tonk in Texas.” So I had to visit. “The Best Honky-Tonk in Texas” also had the lowest ceiling in Texas, but I ducked as necessary and was delighted to be able to buy a pitcher of See moffett on 13

All the Gospels tell how Jesus called his disciples from their day-to-day jobs, to the task of learning from him and then carrying his message to the world. The story may be slightly different in each Gospel. But there is a common theme – Jesus called and they responded. They had no idea what the future would bring, but they were willing to try something new. In the Gospel of John, John the Baptist keeps running into Jesus. They were cousins, but it doesn’t seem like they had spent a lot of time together. However, both were calling people into a new life. John had been in the wilderness. When he came out, dressed roughly, he had a message – repent and return to God. When people asked him if he was the expected Messiah, he just shook his head. “The messiah will be much greater than I am. Then Jesus came to the same area. It seems like Jesus might have been on the edge of the crowd watching. But he knew this was his time. He strode forward into the people surrounding John and asked to be baptized. John knew – this was the greater one. After some hesitation, he complied, and he saw the power of God in this man, Jesus. There were other times he saw Jesus, and pointed him out to the men who followed and helped him. “That man over there, that’s the one I have been telling you about and preparing for. Two of John’s disciples

cent. But can the serial liar be believed? Over the past several weeks as he has attempted to “move past the past, Weiner has admitted that more creepoid photos or messages may surface. He told WNYC: “People may decide they want to come forward and say, here’s another email that I got or another photo. I’m certainly not going to do that. So people may hear things that are true, they may hear things that are not true, but I’m going to try to keep being focused on issues that are important to New York City. Silly me, but perhaps the predatory perv behavior of one of the Big Apple’s leading mayoral candidates should be an issue of concern. As I pointed out when the late, great Andrew Breitbart broke Weinergate wide open two years ago, stories about Weiner’s hot pursuits of young Capitol Hill interns date back to 2001. At least one young woman told liberal Vanity Fair magazine that Weiner hunted down her email address, bragged about riding on Air Force One and extended an invita-

tion to visit his office in person. Trolling habits die hard. And all the sex therapy in the world can’t cure pathological skeeviness. The man who wants to be New York’s mayor was willing to blame truthseeker Breitbart for “hacking into his rancid social media accounts. He was willing to mislead his lifelong Democratic pals and enlist them in his phony smear conspiracy to cover his lurid macking tracks. This is not merely a “private matter. It’s about public fitness for office. Anthony Weiner thinks he should be put back in political power because he effectively champions “middle-class values. Middle-class New Yorkers who value decency, honesty and safe work and online environments for your young daughters, speak now or forever hold your peace.

Summer Fun! The Best Summer Ever Starts Right Here!

Build a Boat This Summer With The NH Boat Museum WOLFEBOEO - Have you ever dreamed of making your own small boat for summer use but didn’t know how? Then the New Hampshire Boat Museum’s popular Boat Building Program is perfect for you. This summer the Museum is offering two sessions of intensive boat building classes geared for novices who want to make either a canoe, kayak, Bevin’s Skiff, or Passagemaker. And this year we have offered a new option to the Adult class: the opportunity to build your own paddleboard. Thanks to grants from a number of donors, scholarships are still available for students in the Youth Program and families with children who participate in the Adult/Family Program. The scholarships are for youth or families who might not otherwise be able to participate due to financial considerations. To learn more about the classes, costs, or the scholarships, visit the Museum’s website at www.nhbm.org. Or call the Museum at 5694554. The boats, which Museum volunteers start for the students over the winter, are from kits. You have the choice of building a One-person canoe, One-person kayak, 12foot Bevin’s Skiff, 12’6 paddleboard or a12’ Passagemaker Skiff Costs vary, depending on the boat you chose. Current Museum members get a discount. The Boat Building classes give you a great value because you create your own boat at a low coast and learn about boats and boat building from excellent teachers. The two sessions

available this summer are:Adult/Family Boat Building will be held from July 13 - 21. This session is open to adults or families with an adult and child team. Depending on the type of boat selected, you might finish your boat before the 21st. At the end of the session a special launching will be held on Lake Wentworth. The class runs daily from 8:30am-3:30pm. Youth Boat Building will be held from August 5-16. This session is open to girls and boys ages 12 and up. In this course, you can choose to build a canoe, kayak or Bevin’s Skiff. At the end of the session a special picnic and launching will be held on Lake Wentworth. The class runs from 9am-3pm Monday - Friday. In each class you are taught the safe use of hand tools and small power tools by expert instructors, with plenty of individual assistance by volunteers. All materials and tools are supplied. You don’t have to be a “woodworker. Through hard work and the help of our volunteers you will create your own beautiful finished boat you will be

proud to take out on the lakes and rivers when you finish the class. If you have any questions or want to receive a sign-up form in the mail, please call the Museum at 569-4554. Applications are available online for downloading at www. nhbm.org.

Let’s Fish - Part 3 by Peter Grasso Contributing Writer

Alright, now you’ve been down to see Alan, at AJ’s in Meredith, you have your rod, reel, line and a handful of flies and are ready to head out on to the water for a day of salmon fishing. The boat has been checked out, good life jackets, plenty of fuel, warm clothes, fire extinguisher and VHF radio and you are ready to go. What now? All this fancy equipment isn’t going to catch anything by itself, you have to know how to use it. With leadcore line and hard baits as terminal tackle, there really isn’t much to it. If you have a VHF, which I recommend, not only for safety, but for information as well, listen to it. How deep is everyone fishing? In the spring, most folks measure their success by the number of “Colors out on the line. Specifically, a spool of leadcore (any weight) contains 100 yards of line, which is color coded. Each 10 yards (30 feet) is of a different color. In the spring, most fishing is done between 2 to 4 colors out. This means you put all (the 50 – 60’) of the leader out and whatever the prescribed number of colors is, in the water. Then you put the rod in the holder & just troll around at about 1.8 – 2 mph. With the hard baits, you do NOT have to jig the lines. Pretty similar with the downriggers. Hard baits out 20 – 30’, hook up the release & let the ball down

anywhere between 6 – 15’. Set the speed & that’s about it.Running flies is a totally different issue. With the flies, we are trying to imitate the darting nature of the forage fish and “jigging the flies, as you troll, increases the effectiveness of the bait. This jigging action can be done in one of two ways, manually or mechanically. We’ll address the manual action first. Put all of the leader in the water, as well as the prescribed number of colors (2 – 4 in the spring). Set the drag on the reel loose enough so that a fish can pull line if he wants to. With the line in the water, point the rod toward the back of the boat. Now slowly pull the rod toward the front of the boat, dragging the fly in the water. As you do this, count, one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand. The rod should now be pointing more toward the front of the boat. At this point, drop the rod back to your original starting position and let the motion of the boat pick up the slack in the line. When the line becomes taught, begin again with the count and the rod motion. Keep repeating this. The fish will usually hit as the boat picks up the slack line and the fly has pretty much stopped in the water. You will have NO question when that fish hits. The mechanical application of this procedure is pretty much what the “Jig Box does for you. The box itself isn’t anything other than a windshield wiper motor adapted to power a rod holder. It sounds simple but the mechanics are anything but. However, they WORK. These are hard to come by, for sure. There are a number

of variations of this box out there, but the original ones are the best. Earlier, I had mentioned that it would be in one’s best interest to hire a guide for a morning trip in order to first hand learn some of these methods. One thing I do on my boat is to take one rod out of the jig box and let the client run it manually, watching the other box work in order to develop the correct timing. This works well and by the time the charter is over, the client can pretty much do this on their own. I would be remiss if I didn’t “mentionâ€? the use of “Planer Boardsâ€?. These are short plastic board, attached to a large fixed reel in the boat. They are let out off the side of the boat and usually run 50 – 60’ out away from the boat. Your fishing line is let out to the prescribed length and attached to a pinch clip release. This release is on a shower curtain type clip, which is placed around the planer board line. The drag of the line in the water, pulls the line out to the side and away from the boat. This is a technique used quite often for fishing brown trout, which are a very shy fish. However, salmon are not shy, but some folks still use the boards. I might run them occasionally if it’s a slow day. If I do run them, I am usually running them with lines close to the surface (1 ½ to 2 colors out). They will produce, but are a LOT of work and I am not convinced that the results outweigh the effort. Well, that’s about it on the basics‌‌I still recommend hiring a charter to get some hands on information. This will pay for itself over time. As I See grasso on 28

The exhibit runs from June 12 through June 30 and is free and open to the public Mondays through Fridays from 9am to 5pm; weekend hours by chance or appointment. From July 5 through 31, the Mill will present Boating Through the Lakes Region. A wonderful exhibit of Art Quilts by Sue Harris runs from August 13 through September 1. THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, June 13, 2013

A recent column in the Wall Street Journal titled “What Would Milton Friedman Say?” tried to derive what the late Professor Friedman “would no doubt regard as the ideal outcome” as far as immigration laws were concerned. Although I was once a student of Professor Friedman, I would never presume to speak for him. However, he was a man with the rare combination of genius and common sense, and he published much empirical work as well as the analytical work that won him a Nobel Prize. In short, concrete facts mattered to him. It is hard to imagine Milton Friedman looking for “the ideal outcome” on immigration in the abstract. More than once he said, “the best is the enemy of the good,” which to me meant that attempts to achieve an unattainable ideal can prevent us from reaching

good outcomes that are possible in practice. Too much of our current immigration controversy is conducted in terms of abstract ideals, such as “We are a nation of immigrants.” Of course we are a nation of immigrants. But we are also a nation of people who wear shoes. Does it follow that we should admit anybody who wears shoes? The immigrants of today are very different in many ways from those who arrived here a hundred years ago. Moreover, the society in which they arrive is different. The Wall Street Journal column ends by quoting another economist who said, “Better to build a wall around the welfare state than the country.” But the welfare state is already here-- and, far from having a wall built around it, the welfare state is expanding in all directions by leaps and bounds. We do not have a choice between the

cultures is an irreversible decision with incalculable consequences. If we do not see that after recent terrorist attacks on the streets of Boston and London, when will we see it? “Comprehensive immigration reform” means doing everything all together in a rush, without time to look before we leap, and basing ourselves on abstract notions about abstract people. welfare state and open borders. Anything we try to do as regards immigration laws has to be done in the context of a huge welfare state that is already a major, inescapable fact of life. Among other facts of life utterly ignored by many advocates of de facto amnesty is that the free international movement of people is different from free international trade in goods. Buying cars or cameras from other countries is not the same as admitting people from those countries or any other countries. Unlike inanimate objects, people have cultures and not all cultures are compatible with the culture in this country that has produced such benefits for the American people for so long. Not only the United States, but the Western world in general, has been discovering the hard way that admitting people with incompatible

Ask The Builder Resurfacing A Cracked Concrete Driveway Is A Great DIY Task

Over 35 years of Beautification

by Tim Carter

Syndicated Columnist

Complete Landscaping & Masonry

DEAR TIM: I have an older driveway that was installed 42 years ago. It’s still in pretty good shape other than some cracks. These have been patched and are unsightly. I was wondering if I could get an even appearance to the entire surface by applying a thin layer of colored thinset grout over the driveway. Do you think this would hold up to vehicular traffic? If so, how would you apply it to get a nice appearance? If not what other ideas do you have? Julie C., San Jose, Calif.

This cracked concrete driveway can be made to look like new with not too much effort.

DEAR JULIE: I’ve got great news for you. Soon your driveway is going to look simply stunning. You can transform its look using colored thinset if you choose, but I’d recommend a slightly different material that will give you the durability you’re looking for. Perhaps the best news of all is that this is a DIY project if you can muster up the help of three friends for just about half a day. Are you sitting down? The total cost of the project should be less than $500, and that includes the pizza and beverages you’ll serve your work crew! Your photo showing the existing cracks and discoloration was very helpful. For your new driveway to look superb for many years, you’re going to have to do some extra work repairing the cracks. I recommend that you grind them out, use a pressure washer to remove as much debris as possible. Try to open up the cracks the full depth of the slab. Once you have achieved this, you need to use any of a number of concrete

epoxy crack repair products to bond the broken slabs together. If you skip this step, the cracks will telegraph through the new overlay you’re going to apply. It may take you one or two days to repair the cracks using epoxy, but it’s worth it. The epoxy you choose to use will tell you how wide, how clean, and how deep the epoxy must penetrate to get a lasting repair. When you’re ready to resurface the driveway, I would highly recommend you apply a layer of cement stucco to the driveway. You can get by with a layer as thin as 1/4 inch in your case. This stucco is very similar to the thinset grout you were thinking of using, but it differs in that the sand particles are much larger. Thinset usually contains a fine silica sand. To withstand vehicular traffic, you need larger sand particles found in coarse or medium sand. Traditional sand usually contains small rock particles that are different colors, and this will actually work to your benefit since you want a colored

surface. You’ll use just sand and pure Portland cement to make the stucco, I’d recommend you blend one part Portland cement to three parts sand. To achieve the color you want, you just add dry shake pigments that are made for brick mortar or stamped concrete applications. You can purchase all these ingredients

at a traditional building supply store that sells materials to bricklayers and stone masons. I highly recommend that you make up a test batch of this stucco and pour it on a plastic sheet in your garage. You want to see what color it is after it cures in 30 to 45 days. The last thing you want to do is to do all this work and not be happy with the color. To get the new stucco to bond permanently to the existing concrete you need to do what some old master masons taught me decades ago. They would

apply a thin coat of cement paint to the existing driveway just before pouring the stucco. You make cement paint by mixing pure Portland cement with water to the consistency of regular paint. Just before applying the cement paint, you need to spritz the existing driveway with water. Don’t get the driveway too wet, just damp. Roll the cement paint on the existing driveway just before you pour on the stucco mix. Don’t allow the cement paint to dry. It’s best to work on overcast, cooler days. Sunny, windy days are the absolute worst conditions to do this job.

Use a magnesium float to finish the stucco. You can also apply a broom finish if you want a linear pattern. To achieve a great broom finish, you’ll have to practice to discover the magic time when the stucco is ready to be stroked. Do it too early and you end up with a mess. Wait too long and the stucco gets too hard. If this happens, the broom bristles won’t make a great impression. I suggest you partake in some on-the-job training to hone your skills. In your photo I see a small sidewalk between your drive and front door. Apply this same stucco first to this sidewalk, one small section at a time until you have a great feel for how long it takes for the stucco to harden enough to apply a finish. The key to getting even color in the batches you mix is very controlled measuring of all ingredients. It’s also very important that you add the same amount of water each time as you make each batch. Too much or too little water will affect the finished color of the batches. Want free home-improvement information? Go to www.AsktheBuilder.com and sign up for Tim’s free newsletter. 1927 Silent Film ‘The Gaucho’ To Screen With Live Music At Flying Monkey He was the Harrison Ford of his time—an action hero who first entertained movie audiences with thrilling on-screen adventures and feats of derring-do. He was silent screen idol Douglas Fairbanks Sr., whose best work includes ‘The Gaucho’ (1927), a timeless adventure film that features a great story, spectacular settings, and memorable performances. ‘The Gaucho’ will be shown with live music for one screening only on Thursday, June 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Flying Monkey Moviehouse and Performance Center, 39 South Main St., Plymouth, N.H. Live music will be provided by silent film accompanist Jeff Rapsis. Admission is $10 per person. ‘The Gaucho’ opens in dramatic fashion, with a young girl saved by a miracle after falling from a high cliff in the Argentine Andes. She is blessed with healing powers, causing a shrine to be built on the site. A city grows around it, rich with gold from grateful worshipers.
