Take A Train Ride Back In Time At Laconia Antique Center by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

If you’ve been to the Laconia Antique Center in downtown Laconia, chances are you spent most of your time on the first floor poring over their impressive collection of antiques and collectibles. If you happen to venture up to the second floor on Saturdays, you may be surprised to experience one of the

more impressive collections of working classic trains running on a variety of carefully laid out scenes full of the knick-knacks and accessories that will, if you are old enough, take you back to your childhood. “A lot of older folks are surprised when they come up and see this,” said Lawrence Hubbard, who maintains and runs the trains every Saturday from 11am-3pm. “They will reminisce about the set they had as

kids.” Of course, a lot of little kids love it too, It is a new experience, far removed from the video games and technology they are used to. The train display at the Antique Center has been around since 2015. It was designed by Bruce Eisehauer after Charlie St. Clair, who owns the Antique Center, provided Bruce with a plethora of classic trains and train See TRAINS on 28

Abortion Is An Economic Benefit? To The Editor: Today I heard something that I absolutely found to be breathtaking. I watched and listened to the Secretary of the Treasury say in a Congressional Hearing that abortions are good for the nation’s economy. Janet Yellen said that more black women will be able to enter the work force without being responsible for caring for a baby. She actually said this to Senator Tim Scott who is black. Scott reminded Janet Yellen that his mother was thankful to have given birth to Tim Scott. You cannot make this stuff up with the Secretary of the Treasury thinking in terms of killing babies from an economic viewpoint. Where are we going as a society? Is a human life really about economics? The Biden Administration, responsible for appointing Yellen, is taking this country in the wrong direction exemplified by showing no intrinsic value for human life. This cannot be sustained in any society where integrity seems to be no longer important. Human life is precious and needs to be coveted or our country will fail to exist. Kenneth L. Bowers Wolfeboro, NH.

Does It Work? To The Editor: With the recent shooting by a disturbed teenager all I hear is licensing of guns and restrict our Second Amendment Rights. Well since my son was killed by a drugged driver how about restricting drugs? Oh wait we have licensed drugs to make taxation. Does it work? NO! Then why not restrict people from owning cars with over a 100,000 killed in car accidents each year maybe we should take cars away from people, we already license drivers and that hasn’t prevented people from accidents and killing or maiming. For those calling for gun control it makes as much sense as car control so we won’t have car accidents killing people. Identify the mentally ill and give them medical help, then maybe we won’t have deaths from acohol, druged drivers, etc. Common sense says its not guns that kill it’s people with mental instability. Harriet E. Cady Deerfield, NH.

Military Grade Weapons

To The Editor: I am told the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Unfortunately the recent mass shootings were all by a good guy with a gun. That is

until they started shooting innocent people. We can say it’s a mental illness issue, really... what person in their right mind would shoot up a school, store or anything else. Back ground checks?? I believe none of these shooting were performed by convicted felons or with stolen guns. No matter the age, there is no need for anyone to have military grade weapons. Age (they waited until they were legal) or background check would not have prevented their action. The only thing that would have prevented these horrible events is not to have access to military grade weapons. If anyone feels they can’t live without military grade weapons, perhaps we should be looking at their mental health. John Brennick Rochester, NH.

Two Reasons To The Editor: Hopefully now the American public understands the folly of ever electing a career politician (12+ years) of any party or ideology to the office of president of the United States. In most fields of work, experience is regarded as a plus, not a contaminant as in political endeavors of overly long tenure, especially the highest office in the land. One reason stands out more clearly in Joseph Biden than any president in recent memSee MAILBOAT on 19

It may not officially be summer just yet, but we have had a few warm days, so it seemed like a good time to prepare for the hot days ahead. Here are some things you can do to protect and help birds this summer: Feeding hummingbirds is one of the great joys of summer in New England. No matter how many times they have visited already, it is always a thrill to see one land on your feeder, or better yet, feed from flowers planted in your yard. It is important, however, to keep the sugar water fresh and the feeder clean. Sugar water should be changed every couple of days during hot weather. It can be a bit cumbersome, I know, but it is worth the effort as it keeps the birds happy and safe. Also, sugar water should be made with four parts water and one part sugar, and that’s it. No red dye. It’s unnecessary and potentially harmful to the tiny birds. Similarly, other birdfeeders should be cleaned regularly as well. Hot, sticky weather is conducive to bacterial growth and we want to keep our birds healthy and diseasefree. Cleaning the feeders takes a little effort, but again, it is worth

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

A Tough Transition For the past twenty-five years or so I have explained in these columns my adjustments to life in New Hampshire as a Flatlander by Brendan Smith originally from Weirs Times Editor Long Island, New York. I have put myself out there as someone “from away” as some like to call it. I even started, along with my friend Vinnie, the group F.A.T.S.O (Flatlanders Adjusting To Solitary Oblivion) a support group to help other Flatlanders adjust to their first winters here. Add to that my biannual run for governor under The Flatlander ticket, now on my 12th try. Back in 1995, when all of this started, I had no choice but to be the real me despite what some natives might think. It was a different world back then and that was the only option. It was who I was and where I came from and there was not getting around that. But now, in 2022, things are different. No one who lives in New Hampshire, but comes from somewhere else, needs to carry that burden (if that’s how they see it) around with them any longer. You don’t need to be known as a Flatlander any longer. Now all one needs to do is to identify as a native. I have actually considered this; to come and out and shout “I AM A NATIVE” and then start my new life as someone who was born and raised in New Hampshire and not in the suburbs of New York City. With this instantaneous change I would no longer have to give a long drawn out answer to explain where I was from if someone asked me if I was a native. By transitioning to a

Native, I could simply say “yes” and then all of the extra chatter about where I was born and raised would be eliminated and help me save precious time. Believe me, it is tempting to think about. I do know a few Flatlander folks who have transitioned to native, but some admit it hasn’t been as easy a life as they had thought. A few spoke to me anonymously to share their story and I thought I might share one with you in case you are thinking of making the transition yourself. This is Charlie’s story. Charlie, like myself, was born and raised just outside of Manhattan. He moved here to Central New Hampshire around 2002. He definitely found it hard to fit in, and I could relate. Like myself he struggled with learning to rake his roof after a snowstorm and also fitting in at the local dump. If you read my book, The Flatlander Chronicles you would see the similarities. (Shameless self-promotion.) Charlie loved New Hampshire, but didn’t know if he could make it. Unlike me and other Flatlanders who did successfully assimilate, Charlie didn’t give it enough time and in 2016, at only the age of fourteen in Flatlander years, he decided he wanted to transition into a native. At first all seemed well, but it wasn’t until this year, 2022, when he would have been twenty in Flatlander years, that Charlie started to have his doubts. “At first it was easy,” said Charlie. “It only took me a little while to get used to saying ‘Ayuh’ and ‘You can’t get there from here’ instead of ‘Whaddyawant’ and “Fugedaboutit’. I even found another group of Flatlanders who transitioned to natives and we’d hang around at the dump on Saturday mornings.” But eventually who Charlie actually was would begin to take

hold and it got a little harder. “It all changed with the food,” Charlie said. “It was hard to pretend I actually liked the store bought bagels and what they called potato salad at first, but I got used to it. Then one day I was with a group of co-workers, who were born natives, and we were moaning about our lunches when I said ‘I’m really dying for a potato knish’ and that was it. They had no idea what I was talking about, and I really wanted that knish. I realized right then and there I could never go back since I had made that choice so many years ago and now I was stuck where I was. I now have dreams, well nightmares really, about buying delicious potato knishes from sidewalk vendors near Rockefeller Center,” Charlie’s story is just one of many and not all were about the food. (Admittedly a few New York Flatlanders who did transition held onto the fact that they didn’t have to be New York Jets fans any longer as some solace for their pain.) So, as you can see, as easy as it might seem to transition from Flatlander to Native simply be declaring it is so, you have to remember you can never go back to the way it was. Do what you want, but if you do decide to transition to a Native, take Charlie’s story to heart. Things are always tough at first, but often when you just give them time, everything works out the way it should. “Lets Go Jets!” Brendan is the author of “The Flatlander Chronicles”,“Best Of A F.O.O.L. In New Hampshire” and “I Only Did It For The Socks Stories & Thoughts On Aging” All are available at BrendanTSmith. com.

Goofus And Gallant Go Woke Do you remember Highlights, the ubiquitous children’s magazine that you’d devour at the dentist’s office? If you were lucky, you’d wait for the mailman to deliver a fresh edition to your home at the beginning of every month. It was a treasure. The venerable American publication was established in 1946 by an enterprising by Michelle Malkin married couple devoted to improving elementary education. Highlights became a Syndicated Columnist staple in generations of playful and curious youngsters’ lives. Its slogan was “fun with a purpose.” Long before the advent of toxic social media and Silicon Valley, way back before kids were obsessing over “likes” and “views” of self-indulgent selfies of themselves making Kardashian duck faces in their bathrooms and gyrating like Las Vegas poledancers in their bedrooms for TikTok, grade-school readers had healthy addictions to the wholesome trademark features of Highlights. Who can forget spending hours hunting down the cleverly camouflaged objects in “Hidden Pictures”? (Dang it, where was that boomerang?) Did you sit outside in the summer sunshine like 7-year-old me, unplugged and care-free, poring over the nonsensical scenes in the colorful “What’s Wrong?” artwork puzzle on the back cover of your well-worn copy of the magazine?(Wait, how did you miss the dog riding the bicycle backward!) Raise your hand if you memorized the knock-knock jokes, giggled at “Goofus and Gallant” and begged your mom to buy pipe cleaners and popsicle sticks for the magazine’s craft projects.(Puh-lease, Mom, please don’t forget the googly-eyes.) Feeling nostalgic? You’re not alone. Highlights delivered its billionth copy to a Texas schoolgirl in 2006 and marked its 75th anniversary last summer with publication reach in more than 40 countries. Highlights became an American tradition by respecting and inculcating tradition. In its early days, editors incorporated Bible stories without controversy or backlash. Depictions of traditional nuclear families were normal -- and normality was celebrated, not shunned. Highlights was also founded as an advertising-free sanctuary from incessant commercialization by sugary cereal companies, Big Pharma, toymakers and other promotional predators. Most importantly, the 44-page booklet of silliness was a protected space from partisan political pollution. Its side lessons on right and wrong were unobjectionable (Hey, did you see See MALKIN on 34

Is Ignoring The Other Side A Winning Strategy For The Left? This week, my company, The Daily Wire, premiered a blockbuster new documentary starring Matt Walsh. Titled “What Is A Woman?”, the documentary investigates radical gender theory and its peculiar by Ben Shapiro hold on the elites in our Syndicated Columnist society -- and how the insane proposition that men can become women and vice versa has become so well-accepted that even normal Americans now live in fear of questioning it. The film has been the single largest success in the history of The Daily Wire; hundreds of thousands of Americans have subscribed to view it. Yet Rotten Tomatoes, the review aggregator for film and television, has not a single traditional review of the film. That’s because, according to the legacy and entertainment media, the film doesn’t exist. When the Daily Wire press team sent out invitations to reviewers to watch the film -- knowing, of course, that the vast majority of reviewers are Left-leaning and would undoubtedly pan the film -- reviewers began responding with insults and declarations of preemptive hatred. “Hard pass,” wrote one. “Unsubscribe,” wrote another. “Lose my email. Forget my name.” A third reviewer, this one a member of GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, wrote, “Hard f---ing pass. I won’t give that transphobic bigot a platform on my site. Never email me again!” Thus, the current Rotten Tomatoes audience score for the film is 96%; the reviewer score remains empty. Reviewers’ willingness to pretend that there is no controversy with regard to gender and sex perfectly reflects the Left’s beliefs about transgender ideology more broadly. One gender reassignment surgeon -- a medical doctor who performs body-mutilating surgeries -- told Walsh that nobody believed in traditional ideas about biological sex anymore; only “dinosaurs” would believe

such antiquated notions. Such denial of the mere existence of a countervailing argument is a common feature of the Left these days. The idea is that by pretending opposition to bizarre ideas doesn’t exist, you can mainstream those bizarre ideas. Thus, “everyone believes” that climate change is not merely a byproduct of human activity, but that it threatens life on earth; to deny the latter proposition is tantamount to Holocaust denial. “Everyone believes” that America is systemically racist; to do otherwise is to mark yourself as a bigot. But what if everybody doesn’t believe such propositions? What if there are millions of Americans -- the majority of Americans, in fact -- who believe precisely the opposite? Then the only option is to reinforce denial with censorship. Which is why former Barack Obama senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer went on the air at MSNBC to declare the very popularity of conservative viewpoints a threat to democracy. “Right wing content,” Pfeiffer observed, “dwarfs progressive content (on Facebook). It dwarfs mainstream media content, which actually should be the part that scares us the most, that Ben Shapiro’s Daily Wire has more followers and engagement, many times more than The New York Times or CNN... That is a problem for democracy.” Democracy, you see, simply means the Approved View. If the Approved View is somehow unpopular, that must be a problem of propaganda, which is in turn a problem for democracy. The only solution is to ban such propaganda, thus leaving a monopoly on behalf of the Approved View. If the echo chamber isn’t strong enough to drown out the outsiders, simply silence those outside the chamber, then declare democracy safe. There’s only one problem: it won’t work. Democrats have siloed themselves into an increasingly progressive universe, one in which the most controversial imaginable propositions are utterly uncontroversial. In this universe, See SHAPIRO on 34

Biden’s Real Deficit The president now brags that he cut the deficit! “We’re on track,” he says, to have “the biggest decline in a single year ever in American hisby John Stossel tory.” Syndicated Columnist It’s actually true. But utterly deceitful. President Joe Biden’s deficit will be down from last year, but that’s only because he spent such gargantuan amounts then. For once, the media did not take his remarks at face value. Even

CNN ran a “fact check” that quoted a Moody’s Analytics director saying, “The actions of the administration and Congress have undoubtedly resulted in higher deficits, not smaller ones.” Much higher. Despite record tax revenues from last year’s booming stock markets, our national debt will increase by about $1 trillion. Sadly, most people don’t care. These big numbers are too abstract. This will not end well. During Barack Obama’s presidency, I complained about his irresponsible spending. Obama practically doubled our debt. What a relief it was when Donald

Trump was elected! He looked at the budget and said, “There’s a lot of fat in there!” He promised he’d “cut spending, big-league!” Foolishly, I believed him. But Trump cut almost nothing. He bragged that his military spending set “an all-time record.” Congress was partly to blame, but under Trump, our debt rose by another third. Never trust politicians. Last year, Biden made things much worse. He signed a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief law, saying he was “giving people in this nation, working people, middle class folks, people who built the coun-

try, a fighting chance.” It included $1,400 stimulus checks, increased unemployment benefits and increased child tax credits. Then he added the $1.2 trillion “infrastructure” bill, which included billions in state and local aid, billions for schools, billions for small businesses, $110 billion for infrastructure and $66 billion for Biden’s favorite subsidy for the rich, money-losing Amtrak. Biden wanted to spend even more, but his Build Back Better Act failed to pass. Thanks, Joe Manchin. You saved us $2.2 trillion and made our government a little less See STOSSEL on 35

Global Investments Rebound, But Expected To Falter Again Foreign investment flows worldwide have rebounded to pre-pandemic levels reaching nearly $1.6 trillion. That’s the by John J. Metzler good news. Yet Syndicated Columnist as a new report warns, the war in Ukraine and widening global uncertainty, make the prospects for expansion appear grim. That’s the verdict from the annual World Investment Report 2022, published by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Not surprisingly

the top ten countries attracting foreign direct invest flows (FDI) are the United States, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada, Brazil, India, South Africa, Russia and Mexico. Indeed the USA saw foreign investment post-pandemic flows more than double to $367 billion, the third highest level ever recorded. The U.S. remained the largest recipient of FDI with major investments in the pharmaceutical, aviation and railways sectors by the UK, Ireland and Canada. Conversely, investment flows into the European Union (EU) reached $138 billion, the lowest level since 1997. Countries like the Neth-

erlands witnessed major investment slumps. Tellingly, there’s not a single EU country among the top ten FDI recipients! Germany comes in at 11th with investment falling from $65 billion in 2020 to $31 billion last year. Surprisingly South Korea is not among the top twenty FDI destinations; yet the ROK saw an FDI outflow of $61 billion last year. Stated another way the so called BRICS investment destinations Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa are in the top standings. Following its invasion of Ukraine, Russia is naturally the pariah in the room. During 2021, $38 billion was invested into the Russian

economy; the sum during the pandemic year was $10 billion. Most foreign firms investing into Russia are concentrated in the energy and service sectors. Naturally punishing sanctions regimes, especially from the U.S. and European Union countries, will likely freeze Russian investments and trade causing Moscow’s economy to enter a serious long term decline. The report states that Asia is the largest recipient region, accounting for 40 per cent of global FDI reaching $619 billion. Yet investment flows remain “highly concentrated; six economies account for more than 80 per cent of FDI to the See METZLER on 35

The Sam Blumenfeld Legacy by Hal Shurtleff Director, Camp Constitution Alton, NH

I first met Sam Blumenfeld back in 1989 at an event in Windham NH, in which Sam gave me some of the best advice I ever heeded: “Never let your children set foot in a government school.” Sam was born in the South Bronx in 1926. The son of Jewish immigrants from Poland. Sam attended New York’s public schools where he learned to read via intensive phonics. Sam would recount to audiences in later years that his classrooms had chairs and desks bolted to the floor, and the only things that hung on the walls of the classroom where pictures of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and the letters of the al-

phabet in cursive. His principal would lead the school in prayer and read the “Twenty-Third Psalm.” His parents and teachers instilled a love of the United States. Sam was a World War II veteran who served as an artilleryman in the Italian Theater under General Mark Clark. He

authored poems about his wartime experiences including a stanza which tells the story of Sam showing mercy to a sick German soldier whom he shared his food with and one on death: The Dead: Inhabiting the Fields I would have never known the smell of death had I not gone to Italy and rode across the valley. And surely it is peculiar for I had never seen dead bodies before and I had always held my breath when a hearse crossed my path. But in the valley, I could not close my eyes or steal past the” dead, nor could I hold my breath, for death filled the air and was soaked in the fields, and its odor was sweetly mixed with that of the soil, and when darkness fell the land and sky became so arranged that the l living was undistinguishable from the dead and the dead placed their arms around all that slept into the night. After the war, Sam attended and graduated from City College of New York and then studied in France

where he befriended author James Baldwin. In the late 1950s. Sam worked for the publishing company Grosset and Dunlop where he would edit the Hardy Boy and Nancy Drew mystery books. In the early 1960s, his friend Watson Washburn, a New York City attorney and tennis star, asked him to join his Reading Reform Foundation. Sam asked why it was necessary to have such a foundation believing that government schools still used phonics to teach children to read. Mr. Washburn suggested that Sam read Why Johnny Can’t Read by Rudolf Flesch. The book was rightfully critical of the look-say method of reading and promoted the use of intensive phonics. The book changed Sam’s life. Motivated by Mr. Flesch, whom he befriended, Sam’s researched the history of so-called progressive education which led him to conclude that the “progressive educators” were deliberately dumbing down the children of America. This did not endear him with the likes of the National Education Association to say the least. Sam went on to be an editor for a now-defunct weekly publication “The Review of the News” He also founded American Friends of Katanga, American Friends of Algeria, and the Society of Jewish Americanists. He befriended many leaders in the liberty movement but his affiliation with Robert Welch and The John Birch Society caused a rift with Sam and some of his what is now known as NeoConservatives including William Buckley, See SHURTLEFF on 26

Letters From God This series of Letters From God is an attempt to put the thoughts of God as revealed in the Scriptures as they relate to individuals and the nation of the USA.

your nation looked to me and my book, the Bible, to discern my will as to what is right and what is wrong. You are living in a time however, where people in general and political leaders in particular have made themselves “gods,” and have not only rejected my word but authorized their word. In doing this, the behavior of all who practice the LGBTQ+ lifestyle, deemed wrong for over 350 years, is now deemed “right” and “good.” The problem with this movement, politically and morally, is that I haven’t changed my definition of what is right and what is wrong. In fact, my standard remains, that the only good and right sexual behavior is when it is practiced by one man and one woman in a covenant relationship made in my presence for life (Matthew 19:4-6). For those who have joined the modern movement to reject me and my will and follow that of the newly created “gods,” you no doubt loath the thought that what you are doing is wrong and that anyone, let alone God, should try to oppose your new found “freedom.” I have given you freedom to choose to either accept or reject me and my will. But I must remind you that you are not God. Since my standards of right and wrong remain, you will experience the painful consequences of your sin and miss my loving offer of life. Remember, sin is an archery term and it means, “to miss the mark,” or the bullseye on a target. I set the target bullseye and if you or anyone

miss it because you have chosen your own “mark” or bullseye, you will face dire consequences. It will come in two forms, the natural and also the supernatural. First, since I created the design of one man and one woman, you will begin to experience natural painful and even deadly consequences during your lifetime if you violate my design. You can’t violate the design and expect that there will not be some or many natural consequences. The second major consequence will be supernatural and will occur when you die and stand in my presence. When you do, you along with all humanity, will give an account of your life and the basis of judgement will be my standard not yours (Hebrews 9:27). Since my standard has always been that even one sin separates you from me and the eternal life, only I can give, your moral sins and so many others will cause you to be unable to stand in my presence and enjoy

Letters From God

QUESTION: What Are Your Thoughts On LGBTQ+ Pride Month? As I promised in my previous letter, I would like to specifically address the social issues that you are facing today, most of which are tearing you apart. With respect to my thoughts on the social issue of LGBTQ+ pride month, I have much to say. Pride is great but you must always be proud of what is good and not what is bad. This is true for all people when they celebrate, with pride, their “rights.” Many take great pride in evil such as gangs, drug lords, human traffickers, violent gun assaults, political corruption and so many others. If they could, they would want a sanctioned government holiday or month to celebrate their desires as well. But this begs the question, what is good? This series of letters has repeatedly highlighted that I, as your creator God, have determined what is good and what is evil. Left to yourselves, there is no reason for anyone to be denied their “right” to be accepted. “There is a way that seems right to man, but its end is the way of death.” (Proverbs 14:12). Until now, the reason that certain behaviors have been denied as “rights” is because they have been deemed wrong. It was considered wrong because

my eternal life (2 Thessalonians 1:3-10; Revelations 21:7-8). This will be the standard for all sinful behavior. If you have never read these warnings in my word, I urge you to do so before we meet. Your only hope is that you take me and my word to heart and recognize that you are not God. Then, see that your behavior, though sanctioned by many so called “gods,” is not a “right” but a wrong and will lead to death. I sent my Son, Jesus to pay the penalty for all your sins. “He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.” (1 John 2:2). Ask him to forgive you and start living according to my will and you will know life now and for eternity. I write this out of love and a longing to restore you to me and to share my blessings of life forever. God

“Laconia’s tax rate will probably take a tumble this year,” said the headline. What was once considered the leading hotel in the city of Laconia was being put up for sale. A hook and ladder truck belonging to the Laconia Fire Department capsized. Negotiations between the city government and a large manufacturing company concerning the canal going through Bank Square were on-going. A local politician was quoted as saying that he felt his chances of winning the Republican nomination for State Senate from the Laconia district were as good as anybody’s, “providing he can get enough votes.” The Laconia Stock Farm was successful in purchasing some fancy animals at a sale for Jersey cattle in Massachusetts. And Laconia’s baseball team was made up of players who were mostly from elsewhere. Those, of course,

A hook and ladder truck belonging to the Laconia Fire Department capsized in 1906. were not the stories from this year of 2022, but those things were happening in the Spring of the year 1906. The tax rate was expected to go down because the assessors found approximately $100,000 more of taxable property then the previous year while the amount of money to be raised by taxation was the same as the previous year at $97,000. The tax rate was expected to drop from $2.30 to $2.20 with Lakeport’s rate going from $2.40 to $2,30. The reason for the increased valuation was stated by the Laconia Democrat to be “..the immense stacks of ice which are now held on the shores of Lake Paugus.” The fire truck that overturned was on its way to deal with a chimney fire at a house at the back of

the City Hotel, but the accident apparently caused greater damage than the fire. The incident occurred on Main Street, near the Story Drug Store, when the fire truck tried to cross the tracks of the street cars to avoid hitting a team of horses driven by two ladies. So I guess we can say that the accident was caused by lady drivers. The wheels of the truck became caught in the street car rails which caused it to turn over. Though several firemen were thrown to the pavement, there was but one serious injury, that of Arthur Jewett. Mr. Jewett suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Cottage Hospital. The big issue being taken up by the Laconia City Council involved the Perley Canal and the problem in posed in the middle of the city. The Ca-

nal, which supplied water to some of the city’s manufacturing plants was in need of repair. A City Council meeting was called by Mayor Drake to act on a resolution to make permanent repairs on the canal. The waterway through the city was called the Perley Canal because it was Mr. Perley who had widened and probably for a time had maintained the canal to provide water for his businesses. To quote the newspaper report, “This resolution authorized the execution of a contract for the repair and reconstruction of the Perley Canal, between the city of Laconia and the Laconia Car Company Works, the features being an offer of the car company to pay the sum of $3,000 towards the reconstruction, with the proviso See SMITH on 30

Sports Quiz How many emails did Arkansas Razorback fan Bill Clinton send as President? (Answer follows)

by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

In the old days we had scrapbooks and photo albums to help record our life journeys. When so moved, we could wistfully review or share memories and milestones. I still have a scrapbook with all the news clips from my high school basketball days. But in this information age we can augment scrapbooks with other digital “albums” of sorts, to include emails. I have several email accounts, some more organized than others. But occasionally its fascinating to scroll back and see what kind of correspondence was going on 10 or 15 years ago. Also, our computers have folders to save documents, photos, and even videos. And then there is You-Tube, where recordings presumably will last indefinitely— or at least until Putin lets loose on us. But hopefully forever. Generations from now, interested descendants can find some of my speeches and marvel at my wisdom and prescience. Or not. Anyway, my laptop has a Weirs Times folder which contains all these Sport-Thoughts columns going back to January of 2005.

3 Favorite Striper Lures And How to Fish Them by Tim Moore Contributing Writer

I wrote a piece several years ago about three of my favorite striper lures and I wanted to expand on some of the information I shared. With any lure, there is a size and profiles that works best in certain situations. Sometimes we tailor our bait to match the hatch and other times we want it to stand out from the crowd. However, color and presentation are easily as important, and sometimes most important. There’s a saying often used regarding lure color: Dark colors on dark days and bright colors on bright days. In general, this holds very true, but you can go one step further and really dial in your color choice to fit just about any situation with often great results. When I am fishing at night, I use a lot of black or very dark colored lures. During the day I like white or shiny lures. Pinks work well when stripers are chasing squid, green is good when the fish are feeding on mackerel or sand eels, and gold works well when bass are eating pogies. Presentation is equally as important. Weightless soft plastics are great for surface feeding fish, and weighted lures are best for fish holding on

Tim jigged this 20-pound striper at Race Point off of Provincetown, RI with a 3.5 Trophy from Daddy Mac Lures. structure. Here I will discuss some of my favorites, and how I fish them. Paddletails Soft plastic paddletails, often referred to as swim shads, vary in size and mimic small to large baitfish, such as mackerel, alewives, or menhaden. A 6” swim shad is a staple in my striper tackle box. Paddletails are designed to not only mimic bait in size, color, or profile, but get their name from their large paddle-like tail designed to create

thumping vibrations in the water. As much as a baitfish swimming through the water will entice feeding stripers, it’s the vibration created by the paddletail that calls them in and triggers strikes the best. You can cast and retrieve or rip them through the water column and pause to let them sink briefly as if to imitate a wounded fish. When it comes to paddletails, the softer the better. Rigid soft plastic paddletails have the best action and cre-

ate great vibrations. Most paddletails don’t swim straight through the water, they list erratically from side to side while their tail creates vibrations that fish can sense from a distance greater than they can see. I fish almost exclusively pearl or pearl with some light purple in it. During the day, fish can see it well and the slight purple sometimes mimics some alarmed baitfish. I vary my retrieve with shads. I steady retrieve will do it, but you can also work the lure back in a slow jigging sort of motion, I call this ripand-drop. My friend Rick calls it Yo Yoing. I lift the rod, just hard enough to feel the tail of my shad vibrate, and then reel down. It is absolutely crucial that you keep your line tight when reeling down, because that is when the fish will hit. It takes some practice, but it is a very effective technique once you get it down. I also sometimes vertical jig a shad on a ½-ounce to ¾-ounce jig head. A technique called slow pitch jigging works well. Bounce or jig the lure up a few feet, and rather than letting the lure freefall, follow it down with your rod, keeping the line tight. Stripers are suckers for falling lures. When ripped through See MOORE on 33

BOSAK from 3 ers dry up in the fall. Native insects rely on native plants and those insects are also food for birds. Planting native flowers, shrubs and trees is just good practice anyway for many reasons. Skip the chemical pesticides and herbicides as they can be harmful to birds and other wildlife as well. Give a natural solution a try. They are readily available at stores and online. Do not trim bushes or have live or dead trees removed until the fall.

Shibley’s Drive-In Ice Cream

Those bushes could be holding a nest or be the go-to hiding spot for a family of birds. Likewise, those trees slated for removal could have nests, either among the leaves in a live tree or in the cavities of dead trees. Dead trees are also a terrific source of food for birds. For birds such as woodpeckers, taking down a dead tree is like a favorite restaurant being razed. Finally, simply enjoy the birds and share your appreciation and passion with others. The more people who are interested in birds and nature, the better.

As one of the oldest Rotary Clubs in District 7870 (chartered in 1925), it’s only fitting that Laconia Rotary Club partner with the World’s Oldest Motorcycle Rally, Laconia Motorcycle Week, for an annual fundraiser. For 30-years, Laconia Rotary’s biggest fundraiser has been a motorcycle raffle. A limited number of tickets ($20 each) have been on sale since early Spring and the event concludes on the last day of Laconia Motorcycle Week when the Club announces the winner of a brand-new 2022 Harley-Davidson right on Lakeside Avenue in the heart of Weirs Beach. This year the drawing will be on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 19th, 2022 at 4 pm. Proceeds from the raffle directly benefit the Lakes Region community, including organizations such as The Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation, Boys & Girls Club of Central NH, Got Lunch Laconia, Belknap Mill Society, Gale Memorial Library, Laconia Little League, NH Veterans’ Association and many more. Laconia Rotary has supported the Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation for 64-years with scholarship contributions totaling $354,500! Additionally, Laconia Rotary Club makes an annual financial commitment to the Rotary International Foundation, helping to provide financial support for global projects, such as providing clean water and emergency shelter boxes to people living in third-world countries. This year’s motorcycle is a 2022 White Sand Pearl Harley-Davidson Street Glide.

Canterbury Shaker Village To Host Simply Shaker: Village Gathering Where you want to be on Lake Winnipesaukee!

On Thursday, June 23, Canterbury Shaker Village will host Simply Shaker: Village Gathering, which will feature an open house, cocktails and appetizers, Shaker-inspired buffet dinner, live music, and more. The Village’s largest annual fundraising event, Village Gathering includes a sneak preview into the new visitor orientation film, produced by SALT, the inaugural James Garvin Award, and special updates,

including the ongoing Schoolhouse restoration project. “This is a chance to really take in the full scope of our magnificent 700-acre property while under a tent overlooking Turning Mill Pond,” said Executive Director Leslie Nolan. Village Gathering concludes the Simply Shaker Annual Fundraiser, which also features an Online Auction taking place June 10 - June 20. The auction features everything from sommelier-selected wines and special artisan wares to getaway packages and exclusive tours. Established in 1792, Canterbury Shaker Village represents one of the oldest, most typical, and most completely

preserved of the Shaker Villages. Subscribing to a revolutionary Christianity that shocked their contemporaries, the Shakers challenged nearly every mainstream ideal of American society, believing in communal ownership, pacifism, dancing in worship, equality of the sexes, celibacy, and living simply. “Both events celebrate the Shakers’ rich heritage and play an important role in helping us continue to interpret Shaker life through engaging tours, exhibits, buildings, gardens, and programs,” said Nolan. “We invite the public to join us in one or both fun events.” Tickets for Simply Shaker: Village Gather-

ing are $100 per person or $750 for a table of 8. To purchase tickets, visit shakers.org. Simply Shaker: Online Auction opens Friday, June 10 at 9AM and concludes Monday, June 20 at 11:59PM. To register for the auction, visit shakers.org. Located at 288 Shaker Rd., Canterbury, New Hampshire, just south of Laconia and north of Concord, Canterbury Shaker Village is a member of the NH Heritage Museum Trail. and Victor Lasky. Sam’s first book was How to Start Your Own Private School: And Why You Need One. He took his own advice by helping to start Hyde Park Academy and South Boston Academy in Boston during the height of forced bussing. Sam became “a sad atheist” after the death of his father, but while researching the early history of education in Colonial New England, he became a devout Christian. By the mid-1970s, Sam became a pioneer in the modern home school movement. His follow up books included Is Public Education Necessary and the NEA: Trojan Horse in the American Education. His last book which he co-authored with Alex Newman was Crimes of the Educators. Sam was ahead of his times when he warned parents that children are at risk in government schools physically, spiritually, morally, and intellec-

tually. Sam’s most important works was his Alpha-Phonics workbook which my wife and I used to teach our children how to read. Unlike most reading books, it has no pictures. Sam would remark that “You do not need puppets popping out of trash cans

to teach children how to read. Sam not only taught children how to read, but he also instructed adults who were functionally illiterate due to the government schools use of the look-say method. Sam volunteered his services at Boston’s WAAIT-We Are All in This Together-House in Boston’s Roxbury section where he taught inner-city adults how to read. Sam was a regular at homeschool conventions all over the United States where he would promote phonics, cursive first and basic arithmetic. He also would give lectures on the agenda of the progressive educators. From Horace Mann’s compulsory promoting the Prussian Model, to John Dewey and his goal to use the schoolroom to promote socialism and atheism, to sex education and death education, to Marc Tucker, and his “school to work” policies under the Clinton Administration, to Bill Gates’ creation and funding of Common

Core, Sam presented damning evidence to prove that our nation’s government schools were under the control of the elites who hated America. He would appear on television and radio talk shows, and his writing would be published in dozens of journals including ‘Boston Magazine,” “The New American,” “The Chalcedon Report, ““Imprimis,” and World Net Daily. Twenty or so years ago, he told me that he would work until he drops. He was true to his word. I last visited him in late May of 2015 where he was on his deathbed. He was still autographing copies of his books. He died several days later June 1, 2015. I made a pledge to Sam on his death bed that his works would be used by unborn generations. He willed me most of his library, papers, and recording. Thanks to two talented people, Mark Affleck, our camp newspaper editor, and Eric Conover, our webmaster, the Samuel Blumenfeld Archives was created. We were able to digitize most of his books, unpublished manuscripts, articles, newsletters, and speeches in both MP3 and MP4 formats. The archives receive over two million views a year and thousands of downloads of his “Alpha-Phonics” and other works. People from all over the world are using his reading program to create highly literate children and adults. We recently heard from a school in Zimbabwe that found the archive and is now using Sam’s “Alpha-Phonics” The archive is available as a free resource (donations accepted) http://campconstitution.net/sam-blumenfeld-archive/

loved trains. At the age of 8, my father built my brother and I a beautiful Lionel train layout in Groose Point, Michigan. He also gave me a lot of trains to repair and kept me in business.” (Hubbard also has a small display that gives some of his own personal history. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1998 and suffered an training accident which left his neck fused with metal plated and 6 screws. He was medically discharged in 2002.) There is a lot of maintenance that needs to be done to keep the trains moving, track cleaning being the biggest. “I hopefully can get one section done very Saturday,” said Hubbard who does it by hand using a scrubby and cleaner. Even though some of these classics are sixty and seventy years old, young kids still have a blast when they come to visit. “On the layout there are many different things hidden for kids to find,” said Hubbard. “There also a few doorbell type buttons around the display that when activated some fun things happen on the tracks.” Hubbard also takes

Paddletail shads are a favorite among kayak anglers for their ability to cover a lot of water. MOORE from 15 a school of bait, the vibration will part the baitfish that the shad would normally disappear in, leaving your lure isolated and often triggering strikes. Soft Baits Stripers find eels irresistible. They find the erratic action of a soft plastic eel-imitating bait even more irresistible. Soft baits, such as the original Hogy, imitate eels, a favorite forage for striped bass. You can rig a Hogy weightless and twitch it in slow moving shallow water to entice cruising bass, or rig it on a jig head and fish it along the bottom in rocky areas where eels might be most likely to hide out. Slowly twitching a Hogy is a favorite of many kayak anglers due to the explosiveness of a big bass when it hits. When I fish at night, a black or blamber Hogy is my choice. The blamber is also a favorite of renowned kayak striper fisherman, Eric Harrison. During the day, white is effective, but pink seems to get the job done more often for me. I fish them anywhere from 7-inches to 13-inches, depending on the size of the fish

around. Hogys are erratic, like an eel, which stripers find irresistible. Hogys are versatile. In slow or shallow water, a weightlessrigged hogy twitched just below will cause most stripers that see it to boil just below the surface as they inhale your offering. In faster or deeper water, or when the fish want a faster presentation, fix your plastic to a swim bait hook or jig head and swim it back, sometimes reeling faster than you might be accustomed to. Vertical Jigs Vertical jigs, like most lures, vary in size, color, and profile. The name vertical jig often leaves many anglers fishing them straight up and down, but these lures are deadly when casted and retrieved. Daddy Mac Lures makes one of the most comprehensive lines of metal vertical jigs on the market. The wide range of sizes and profiles allows you to tailor your lure to what the fish are eating, or match the hatch. While vertical jigs are very effective when fished below your kayak or boat, they really shine when casted out, allowed to sink to the bottom, and

then retrieved back. Vertical jigs are my first choice when stripers are holding on deeper structure in fast moving currents. When I am targeting big fish, I will fish a 3.5 Trophy in mackerel or squid, but the Daddy Mac 2.8-ounce Elite jig is a fish catcher. When the squid are in thick, I stick with pink lures, when there are mackerel around, I use greens. I don’t jig these lures in big sweeping motions, as if I were cod jigging. Instead, I use short rapid pops. I drop to the bottom and rapidly pop the rod tip

while slowly retrieving the lure back toward the surface. Daddy Mac Lures is owned by two of the best striped bass vertical jig fishermen I know. When they come out with a lure, it’s one they would use, so I’ve come to trust their product line. There are many lures on the market that work well for striped bass. The ultimate choice of which lure we use often boils down to our confidence in a specific lure. We use the lures we believe work best and we use our favorites most often, sometimes to a fault. If space is limited, such as it is in a kayak, it becomes important to narrow down the options. Regardless of where you fish for stripers, walk into any tackle shop

and you’ll see these three types of lures on the shelves. Partially because they sell, but mostly because they work. Tim Moore is a full-time professional fishing guide in New Hampshire. He owns

MALKIN from 6 Goofus refuse to hold the door open for his grandma? Rude!). Parents could trust that their authority would not be mocked or values undermined. Those days are long gone. In 2017, after being mau-mau-ed by leftwing alphabet activists on Facebook who wanted pro-gay propaganda included in the magazine’s special edition for children 2 years old and under, Highlights featured a cartoon with a same-sex male couple and two children packing their wagon for a family trip. Initially, the editors resisted the call to capitulate because they believed “that parents know best” when to introduce such topics to their kids. But all it took were hysterical radioactive accusations of “homophobia” for the magazine to fold.

Like every other modern institution masquerading as a champion of children, the editors of Highlights now believe their primary obligation is not to respect traditional parents, but to replace them. “Reflecting” the “diversity” of families means in-your-face proselytizing to “celebrate pride,” which includes Highlightsendorsed books that expose preschoolers as young as 3 years old to “gender identity and transition.” The Highlights pride book list includes titles such as the transgender-promoting “I am Jazz” for 4-year-olds and “Prince and Knight,” in which the protagonists “find true love in a most unexpected place” so as to “accelerate LGBTQ inclusivity and acceptance.” You can’t tie your

shoes yet or finish a word search, but hey, kids, time to accelerate your acceptance of toddler cross-dressing, transgender hormone therapy and two-man love scenes! “Fun with a purpose” has given way to dreadful woke-ification programming and virtuesignaling. Highlights magazine editors remained silent in 2014 while the Obama administration separated illegal alien families at the border and held some children in cages but made a splash in 2019 condemning the same practices when the Trump administration tried to stem the tide. The magazine’s current crusading “chief purpose officer” Christine French Cully is a COVID-19 fear-spreader who uses the magazine to condition kids to accept mask mandates

despite their limited effectiveness in lowering COVID-19 transmission and detrimental effect on childhood brain development. Cully’s Twitter feed reads like the daily talking points diary of a B-list MSNBC guest, decrying guns, pushing dialogue with children about “climate change” and peddling ways to “talk to our kids about Ukraine.” Last week, vigilant Falcon School District 49 board member Ivy Liu posted a recent Highlights lesson titled “I feel upset about racism. What should I do?” The editors’ “anti-racism” book list makes clear that embracing anti-white critical race theory is the only solution. Liu is leading a lonely battle against socalled “Social Emotional Learning” saturating D-49 classrooms (and Highlights materials) -and has even been cen-

sured by colleagues for calling out corrupted curriculum. “Is this what they mean by making social justice warriors out of our kids?” Liu asks. Indeed. It won’t be long now before Goofus and Gallant are dancing at Drag Queen Story Hour and the Timbertoes are forced to pay reparations for slavery. End-stage America never looked so grim, perverse and joyless. Michelle Malkin’s email address is MichelleMalkinInvestigates@ protonmail.com. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, June 16, 2022 — METZLER from 7 region.” Those countries comprise China, Hong Kong,in East Asia, Singapore and Indonesia an Southeast Asia, and India in South Asia. China alone accounts for $181 billion in FDI last year, up from $149 billion in 2020; the number of foreign businesses in China registered in 2021 reached 48,000. China’s high-tech sector remains robust; for example, Taiwan Semi-Conductor Manufacturing (TSMC) plans to invest $2.8 billion in China to expand the production of semiconductors used in automobiles. Taiwan’s TSMC is equally building a $12 billion semiconductor facility in the USA. Despite Beijing’s political crackdowns, Hong Kong still largely retains a vibrant economy but without the vigor of past years. Hong Kong’s investment reached $141 billion in 2021 up from a formidable $135 in 2020. Both China and Hong Kong are facing the aftershocks of the COVID pandemic and this year still enduring new lockdowns in Shanghai. Singapore the vibrant city state in Southeast Asia retains its Tiger economy status with $99 billion FDI last year from $75 the year before, Indonesia is emerging as a force too with $20 billion investment last year up from $19 in 2020. India offers an interesting lesson. Despite attracting $64 billion in the pandemic year, last year investment fell to $45 billion. Yet India’s increasingly enterprise orientated economy is attracting key companies from Japan; projects in-

clude the building of a steel and cement plant for $13.5 billion by Arcelormittal Nippon Steel and the construction of a new car manufacturing facility by Suzuki Motor for $2.4 billion. During 2021, FDI in Latin America and the Caribbean rose by 56 per cent to $134 billion, most investments went to South America which saw higher demand for commodities and agricultural products. Brazil, Chile and Colombia were major recipients. Mexico saw a jump in FDI to $32 billion from $28 billion the year before. China’s Huawei announced that it will open a $4.5 billion cloud data center in Mexico. Africa’s FDI flows reached $83 billion, a record level, from $39 billion in 2020. South Africa gained the lion’s share of investment. As UNCTAD warns, “This year, the business and investment climate has changed dramatically as the war in Ukraine results in a triple crisis of high food and fuel prices and tighter financing.” The report adds, “The 2021 growth momentum is unlikely to be sustained.” Global FDI flows in 2022 are expected to trend downward or at best remain flat. Moreover, does global recession loom? John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. STOSSEL from 7 irresponsible. Biden recent deficitreduction brag didn’t mention that he wants to increase the deficit even more. Last week, he put taxpayers on the hook for $5.8 billion in debt from people who attended Corinthian Colleges. Now he wants taxpayers to pay hundreds of billions more so other students don’t have to pay. Biden also bragged about a “record 6.7 million jobs created last year -- the most in the first year of any president in American history.” But the president didn’t create those jobs. In panic over COVID, governments shut down so many businesses that they raised the unemployment rate to 14.7%. Biden then slowed hiring further by giving nonworkers extended unemployment benefits and fat stimulus checks. For many people, that meant they could make as much, or more, collecting unemployment. No wonder they didn’t go back to work. Finally, most benefits have run out, so of course, we have job growth now. It’s not because of anything good that Biden did. Under Biden, Trump and Obama, government federal spending almost doubled. Hope for future spending responsibility is bleak. “Biden’s 10-year outlook still would rack up $14.4 trillion in deficits,” reports Bloomberg. More money gets printed; inflation gets worse; and the national debt grows. Politicians need to make actual cuts to make a difference in our debt.

Budget cuts are needed to give our children hope for a prosperous future. But Biden won’t do that. John Stossel is creator of Stossel TV and author of “Give Me a
