New Hampshire Man Helps Solve Decades Old Massachusetts Cold Case by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Hans Hug, Jr. has been searching the bottom of Lake Winnipesauke and other bodies of water for years, looking for everything from “boats to barges to Buicks to bodies.” Armed with his EdgeTech 4125 Side Scan Sonar System, a commercial grade sonar unit which is used for detecting and imaging objects by using sonar which sends and receives

acoustic pulsed pulses off objects, he is the go-to guy here in New Hampshire for finding “stuff” underwater. But it was in 2021, when what could arguably be called his most significant find, happened not in New Hampshire, but in Massachusetts when he teamed up with his friend, Bruce Stebbins in hopes of finding a car once driven by seventeen-year-old Judy Chartier, who went missing in 1982. Stebbins, an ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) Pilot, first contacted

Hans in June of 2020 to scan Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass, just to see what was down there. The pandemic had left a lot of extra time for these amateur explorers to pursue this passion of theirs. That day on Lake Quinsigamond they found 2 cars and 7 boats. “We became friends after that,” said Hans. “So, the next year Bruce contacted me about a thirty-nine -year old Cold Case in Billerica, Mass., where he was from. Roe v. Wade Overturned To the Editor: The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade (Roe); the lying about the decision has begun. This decision does NOT outlaw all abortions; according to the NY Times about 87% of abortions will be unaffected (the rest will be available in other states). This decision is NOT anti-democratic; it leaves control of abortions to be decided democratically by the people of each state and their representatives. Each state’s decisions can evolve as the people consider the related competing interests: a woman’s, the baby’s, and the state’s/society’s. For example, has killing 63 million babies promoted a healthy society and respect for life or does it contribute to today’s high crime, suicide, and drug use rates? The states where the citizens want the skulls of full-term, healthy babies to be crushed as they are being born will still allow it. States wanting underage, and perhaps molested, girls to get abortions without parental consent, will still allow it. Most states will probably continue to have laws that are similar to what the Roe decision allowed; abortions will be available for a period of time, typically before the baby could live outside the womb. Each state will decide about parental notification, rape, incest, public funding, healthcare

requirements to ensure safe abortions, etc. Even abortions supporters like Ruth Bader Ginsberg agreed that the Roe decision was poor. Dissenters from today’s decision identify no Constitutional Right to abortion. Bi-partisan support existed/ exists in Congress for a Constitutional, nationwide law enacting Roe. The Democrat leadership’s very radical abortion bill was defeated by a bipartisan vote. Nationwide, today’s Supreme Court decision returns abortion decisions to the people and their representatives; abortion in New Hampshire is unaffected. Don Ewing Meredith, NH

Biden Is Finished To The Editor: How do you feel about the slow destruction of this country made possible by Joe Biden. This is not something that should be a surprise because both political parties have been telegraphing it for almost two years. President Biden is finished in terms of moving the country forward. He is finished in the eyes of world leaders. The Mexican President refused to attend the Summit of the Americas. The Saudi Prince will not talk to President Biden on the phone. One hundred and forty countries are unloading their jails and sending criminals across our border.

This country will suffer greatly as a result of this madness. President Biden appointed a Cabinet filled with people not up to the job and it shows. This country is in trouble when you think that the previous Administration created energy independence however President Biden destroyed it with the stroke of a pen. All of this has been intentional as we can look forward to energy blackouts over much of the country. The dollar is losing its value. People have had enough which should become reality in November when Democratic Politicians who have said nothing are going to be shown the door. President Biden blames President Putin instead of looking in the mirror. This cannot be sustained so get ready for some difficult times. Biden’s vision for the future is based on silly impossible. The Federal Reserve Fell Asleep

To The Editor: As a Babson MBA graduate I am highly disappointed with the Federal Reserve’s very late recognition of the runaway inflation impacting our country. Inflation is running at 8.5% compared to a year ago, and the Federal Reserve (Fed) only started to increase interest rates in March 2022 to See MAILBOAT on 41

“Welcome Hundreds of Visitors For Celebration of Fourth” was the headline of the July 3rd edition of The Laconia Evening Citizen in the year 1948. That headline would fit for this present year of 2022, but I dare say there are some differences between the celebration of 1948 and that of 2022. The Laconia newspaper labeled Laconia and the Weirs the Lake district even though the Weirs was a part of the city of Laconia as it is today. The district, we were told, “is welcoming hundreds from the cities, principally from Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York for the first big holiday of the year.” Hotels and cabin colonies, we were informed, were shining and trim, with new places to stay being rushed to completion. The slogan was “Always room for a few more.” The “fourth” was on a Sunday in 1948 so it appears as if Monday

also became a holiday, giving a long weekend. So how was the first big holiday of the year celebrated in 1948? And what else was happening? It is probably no surprise to you that Laconia’s municipal observance took place at Opechee Park. And it took place on Sunday, July 4th. An afternoon model airplane demonstration was sponsored by the Weirs Chamber of Commerce and scheduled to take place at the park at two o’clock. The demonstration of the model planes was to be put on by Bill Creighton. See SMITH on 38

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Time To Plan My doctor recently informed me that I would need to have something taken care of. The choices were either a quick fix that by Brendan Smith would have me Weirs Times Editor back on my feet the next day, or a more invasive procedure that would keep me at home for at least a week or possibly more. “No heavy lifting, no exercise and no driving. It won’t be fun,” he explained about the more invasive option. So, the choice was easy, and it didn’t take much thought and I answered right away. “The more invasive option obviously,” I said. “With the money I save on gas I should be able to pay the medical deductible.” Well, I am not exactly telling the truth. The invasive option was really the only one. But I think I might be on to something with the money I’ll save by not driving. I plan to make the best of my downtime seeing that my campaign for governor representing the Flatlander Party has been lagging a bit and now I will be able to focus on that. I feel a new confidence this year as I start another run. And not doing much of anything for a week will certainly be a great warm up for my duties as governor for two years if I should be elected. There are certainly enough controversial topics to choose from to comment on as a candidate. There is the gun issue, as well as abortion and, of course, climate change, all of which have been going on for decades. (Climate change being the winner since it has been going on for thousands of years.) So, I figure these

entral Baptist hurch

are some of the big ones that people will ask me to comment on. So, I will now have plenty of time to come up with some great stock answers that, while seeming to be addressing the issues, will actually offer no solid solutions at all. This isn’t as easy as it sounds. Republican and Democrat candidates have people to take care of these things for them since people, who are hopeful that things might change if a certain candidate gets in office, will give them their own money to spend on things like to pay for the people who can write down what to say when asked about controversial issues that sound like they are addressing the issues, while offering no solid solutions. Unfortunately, the Flatlander Party really doesn’t get much in donations, so we can’t afford these types of important resources like the other candidates As of today, I have fourteen dollars and sixty-six cents plus a ten-dollar Dunkins’ gift card with four eighty-nine remaining in my campaign coffers. I, on the other hand, can’t even afford a coffer, or even know what a coffer is and I certainly can’t afford to hire someone to tell me what a coffer is. (I can hardly afford a coffee once the gift card is empty). So, it is all up to me and, as I said, having this downtime I will hopefully be able to spend all my time focusing on the things I need to do and say in order to get people to believe that I would make a good governor. Another thing I will have to concentrate on is coming up with a great new slogan. People like slogans and If you can come up with a cool slogan that people can see on bumper stickers while waiting at a stoplight or even on line at a Dunkins’ drive-thru, then

you might arouse the interest of some who will go home and look you up online and research your platform in order to help them make an educated decision about you as a candidate and whether or not you deserve their vote. Or maybe they’ll just vote for you because they remember your cool slogan, which is what most politicians would prefer you’d do instead of searching for stuff about them on the internet since you might find stuff about them they’d rather you didn’t. Lots of politicians like to send out mailers. You know, the giant, cardboard postcard type flyers that takes the mailman an extra few minutes to stuff into your mailbox. I think most people dislike these things. I know I do. It usually contributes to a couple of extra bags of garbage a week which can add up over the course of a campaign season. I was thinking a great way to kill two birds with one stone, which is very hard to do if you’ve ever tried, is to just spend all my money to produce one bumper sticker that reads “Vote Brendan Smith For Governor – He Promises To Never Send Any Annoying Giant Postcard Type Flyers In The Mail.” This just might work. Anyway, I have now some time to figure out what I think will best my best approach in this upcoming campaign. I can’t wait to see what I come up with. Red-Flagging Red-Flag Law Abuse Here we go again. The Beltway Swamp’s ineluctable impulse to (Pretend To) Do Something in the wake of a mass school shooting committed by a homicidal maniac has put America on the brink of greenlighting untold civil liberties abuses in the name of “safety.” The grandstanding gun-grabbing reflex is a hard habit to break. Shamefully, 10 zucchini noodle-spined by Michelle Malkin Senate Republicans led by Texas GOP Sen. Syndicated Columnist John Cornyn back a federal gun-control plan that would bribe states to adopt so-called “red-flag” (a.k.a. Extreme Risk Protection Order) laws. These psychological profiling weapons -- now in effect in 19 states -- empower disgruntled strangers, duplicitous family members, biased police and ideologically driven judges to disarm citizens by labeling them mental health threats to themselves and others. Anti-Second Amendment activists cite scientific research like a new University of California, Davis, study as evidence that red-flag laws are “saving lives.” But the science is untrustworthy. Effectiveness data are limited. “Part of the problem,” two researchers noted in Wired magazine, “is these laws are so new there isn’t much data available. Before 2018, only five states had implemented any form of red flag law, limiting our ability to test for significant effects on gun violence.” Indeed, the associations between suicide/homicide reduction and red-flag policies are weak or nonexistent. The fine print is filled with caveats like this disclaimer from UC Davis’ research team in 2019, which admitted: “It is impossible to know whether violence would have occurred had (orders) not been issued, and the authors make no claim of a causal relationship.” Because these mass shootings are so rare to begin with, candid researchers like one RAND team acknowledge that “their rarity makes it difficult to extract generalizable information to identify useful predictors of risk.” Moreover, policies like redflag laws that target individuals based on risk factors “would result in an extremely high rate of false positives; even the best available risk factors can identify only a subpopulation in which the risk of committing a mass shooting is on the order of one in a million.” What we do know is that real-world exploitation of existing red-flag laws have indeed created real-world nightmares for innocent Americans. Who will keep a database on these invisible civil-liberties casualties and mourn their victimization on the Senate floor? In my adopted home state of Colorado, which enacted the policy in 2020, it’s See MALKIN on 42

The Death Of The Elite ‘Center’

The false center cannot hold. In France, President Emmanuel Macron has now lost his majority in the National Assembly; his party holds 245 seats in the lower house, but the Right holds 150 and the Left by Ben Shapiro 131. In Colombia, forSyndicated Columnist mer M-19 guerrilla and Marxist Gustavo Petro has now become the president of the country, replacing more establishment, Keynesian liberal rule. In the United States, the supposed center within both parties has been increasingly supplanted by anti-establishment forces on both sides. None of this should be shocking, given the destruction of institutional trust throughout the West. And the destruction of that institutional trust has been well earned: It represents the natural result of policy elites lying to those they supposedly serve. Our policy elites maintain that they favor free markets while simultaneously battling against free markets on behalf of a world-changing ideology; they proclaim that they value traditional religion while fighting to undermine its most fundamental foundations; they argue that the world order must be maintained while shying away from the reality of international politics. Klaus Schwab, the head of the World Economic Forum, supposedly a repository of free market thinking, declares that he and his friends will “serve not only selfinterest, but we serve the community”; he then proceeds to leverage economic power on behalf of their preferred ideological outcomes. The result is both economic failure and ideological failure. Take, for example, the Biden administration’s simultaneous demand that oil companies ramp up production and that we completely undermine oil and gas development over the next few years in order to fight global warming. Or, more immediately, take the German at-

tempts to “green” their own economy while quietly outsourcing energy production to Russia -- a policy so egregiously stupid that it has now resulted in Germany firing up coal plants again, now that Russia has cut off the oil supply. On the social front, our institutional elite declare fealty to traditional institutions -- church, family, localism -- and then simultaneously insist that society remake itself in the most radical possible image. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declares her fealty to Catholicism in the same sentence in which she militantly maintains her support for abortion-ondemand; President Joe Biden proclaims his own religiosity while simultaneously deploying his Department of Justice to target states that seek to prevent the confusion and mutilation of children based on nonsensical gender theory. On the foreign policy front, our institutional leaders tell us that we must uphold the world order, then refuse to accept the consequences of that leadership. They rail against the evils of the Saudi Arabian regime while simultaneously intoning that the West must sign a deal with the Iranian terror regime, then end up visiting the Saudis to beg for more oil production. They declare their undying support for the Ukrainian government, then become wishy-washy about providing either the support necessary for its victory or an exit plan in case victory is unachievable. They look askance at the Chinese threat to Taiwan, then teach proper transgender pronoun use to members of the Navy. In short, our institutional elites rely on the power of civilizational foundations that long predate them -- free markets, religious values, military strength -- to prop up failing ideas that undermine those foundations. The result is failure. The Left looks at the prevailing elite consensus and declares it dishonest: If the elites’ principles mattered, they would fight free markets, religious values and military strength. The Right looks at the prevailing elite consensus and feels the same way: If the elites put See SHAPIRO on 42

A New Kind Of Comedy A woman tells the cop who stopped her in a carpool lane she’s allowed to drive there because her pronouns are “they” and “them.” That’s from a by John Stossel video by a conSyndicated Columnist servative Christian satire site called the Babylon Bee. Their humor gets millions of views. “Christian conservatives used to ... be very dour and self-serious,” says Bee editor-in-chief Kyle Mann in my new video. Today, he says, it’s the left who

are self-serious. “They’re the ones that have trouble laughing at themselves.” For example, late night hosts like Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert passionately defend COVID-19 vaccines. “It is a lecture,” complains Mann. “The left used to be anti-establishment,” adds Bee actress Chandler Juliet. Now, she says, ‘They’ve become the blob. ... We’re super happy to be leading the comedic conversation on the right.” One Babylon Bee video, “The Woke Zone,” makes fun of the way the media ignored violence and arson during the George Floyd protests.

“Do you ever feel gratitude to the left that they give you so much material?” I ask. “We have to write things that are funnier than things they’re actually doing,” Mann responds. “That makes our job very difficult.” One Bee sketch portrays its writers struggling to find new material. “John Kerry warns that the war in Ukraine might distract from climate change!” suggests one. Can’t do it, explains another. “It actually happened.” Yes, Kerry really did say that. “Cosmo magazine features a morbidly obese woman on the cover as the picture of health” and, “Math

professor says ‘two plus two equals four’ is racist!” are among other ideas that can’t be used as jokes. “A math professor really said two plus two equals four is racist?” I ask. It’s “a colonialist, white supremacist idea,” explains Mann. Today the Bee reaches more people than The Onion. The establishment doesn’t like that, so some people actually sic so-called fact checkers on the Bee. Storm Clouds Threaten Hong Kong’s Once Bright Horizons How time flies. It’s been 25 years since Hong Kong retuned to Chinese control, a quarter century since the prosperous British Crown Colony by John J. Metzler became a SemiSyndicated Columnist autonomous part of the People’s Republic of China, the world’s largest dictatorship. Nonetheless, the small but feisty islands on the south China coast remained a prosperous and relatively free place, until recently. When Britain formally departed in 1997 after 150 years of rule, part of the exit agreement was a fifty

year deal that Hong Kong would retain its political and economic freedoms. Hong Kong’s way of life was guaranteed. Thus while becoming a Special Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic, the feisty Island entrepôt legally retained rights and freedoms not permitted on the adjoining Chinese mainland. I vividly recall being in Hong Kong immediately following the July 1st handover from the United Kingdom to China. The spectacular fireworks over Victoria Peak and the grand harbor signaled a new era joining what was described as a reformist and ascending China. The whiff of fireworks smoke was still in the air along with a nervous optimism that somehow all would

go smoothly. This was Hong Kong after all, not authoritarian and corrupt Mainland China. And the world was watching. In 1997, Hong Kong was a pretty prosperous place as compared to the Chinese Motherland who was bringing it back to the fold. The adage of the Golden Goose economy became the currency of the day. Hong Kong is the Golden Goose that lays golden eggs, eg. prosperity for China. Why then would China wish to kill the Golden Goose? Good point and largely true until recently. Hong Kong’s Basic Law ensured a “One Country Two Systems” whereby the Crown Colony returned to Beijing’s sovereignty, but

in parallel ensured a self governing region that for 50 years, freedoms and economic vitality would remain untouched by Beijing’s heavy hand. Chairman Xi Jinping’s regime would change the template and narrative for a once largely successful City State based on rule of Law, not on rule by Law. But the storm clouds have been darkening. By 2014, Beijing considered the Sino/British Treaty to have no further legal effect! In 2020 China slapped Hong Kong with draconian national security legislation to pull the independent region into line with the rest of the People’s Republic. Cultivating Connections For A Happier, Healthier Life

by Kelly Chapman Meredith Whole Living Center

The field of Happiness Studies has produced valuable insights into how we can live happier, healthier lives. Not only do these factors move our baseline happiness levels high-

er, but they also boost our anti-fragility, or ability to bounce back from hardships and even grow through the process of experiencing them. Represented by the acronym SPIRE, these components are Spiritual Wellbeing, Physical Wellbeing, Intellectual Wellbeing, Relational Wellbeing, and Emotional Wellbeing. While they each contribute to overall happiness, research shows that Relational Wellbeing, or the presence of supportive and intimate relationships, is the greatest indicator of overall happiness and health. Given how technology and other recent shifts have influenced the nature of our relationships, what

are some of the components we have control over that contribute to these life-enhancing connections? Certainly, the evidence points to quality over quantity when considering the types of relationships that are likely to have the greatest impact on our overall well-being, although we can turn any interaction into a meaningful one with intention. Depth is one component, and given the time and attention it takes to build deep, trusted connections, requires that we prioritize connections enough to cultivate them. Another component, empathy, requires both authenticity and depth,

but can be applied to any human interaction. Notably, as we move toward a more virtually connected world, empathy levels have been decreasing among younger generations. It’s worth considering limiting screen time for ourselves and the young people in our lives to create more opportunities for the types of connection that foster well-being. Giving is a third component, and research indicates that our happiness levels remain higher after using a resource to share with others than they do when we apply the same resources on only ourselves. Significantly, the research on giving has one major caveat. When studying the success rates of individuals who are givers, takers, and those who seek to balance give and take proportionately, it was found that givers were both the most- and least- successful overall. While generosity can contribute to overall happiness and strengthen relationships, giving to others without also factoring in one’s self and can lead to burnout and poorer outcomes. In order to reap the benefits of a giving nature, it’s crucial to factor in our own limitations and personal needs. Rather than being selfish, this balSee CHAPMAN on 11

Walking On Eggshells

by Leslie Gray, LCMHC

Gray Matters Counseling & Wellness

It is a true tragedy of the human experience. You let someone into your world, devoting your time and energy to them. You confide in them, and vise versa. You form a bond, grow to trust them, and develop genuine feelings for them. You choose them… and they choose you. Initially, things seem to be going well. But early on and little by little, trouble ensues. It starts as petty arguments, just bickering really. “It’s no big deal,” you tell yourself. “Everybody fights.” But the petty arguments seem to be escalating in intensity and frequency. You’re not sure what you’re doing wrong, but you’re determined to make it work. You apologize, maybe profusely, even when you’re sure you didn’t do anything wrong. You try harder to make them happy, partly because you care about them and partly to avoid fighting. You start denying yourself the little things that make you happy because it seems to make them so unhappy, whittling yourself down into a shell of

what you once were. You wake up one day and find yourself jumping through hoop after hoop trying to please them (or at least make them less miserable). The trouble is that with each hoop you jump through, you discover another one on the other side, and sometimes they’re on fire. You hope that it will somehow get better and so you just keep trying. You’re in survival mode at this point, trying desperately to get back what you once had. And yet, all your efforts seem to make matters worse. Every now and then, something you do yields a positive result, and you start to think, “Oh, thank God, things are getting better.” But then you are thrust back into battle. (This is a clever though conniving use of intermittent rewards to keep you hooked.) A certain amount of bickering is normal, even in healthy relationships. Fuses run short sometimes. We get on each other’s nerves (maybe the very last one). One person or the other might be showing up in a deficit due to illness, fatigue, or hunger and are simply not at their best. Normal irritations of relationships aside, it’s the chronic unhappiness that really sounds internal alarms. These folks have a problem for every solution and are relentlessly pessimistic, complaining about everything under (and including) the sun. Maybe they live

life like a tennis match, returning every serve with a defensive backhand. Everything you say seems to set them off resulting in snarky, biting remarks. These are people who simply cannot be pleased and are miserable no matter what you do and no matter how hard you try. What you did yesterday won’t work today and every time you get it wrong, you get it right because they don’t want peace; they want conflict. When it isn’t present, they create it out of thin air. They can’t do anything wrong… and nobody else can do anything right (at least in their eyes). This creates a ‘crazymaking environment.’ You may feel gaslit and start to question your own sanity. They speak in riddles making broad, sweeping statements that can’t really be substantiated… or refuted. And it doesn’t stop at intimate relationships. These infractions occur between parents and children, siblings, friends, co-workers, and so on. These people are everywhere and can wreak havoc on your job, relationships, and mental wellness Eventually, people start walking on eggshells around them, trying desperately not to upset them. Those dirty little eggshells are not in your imagination. They are intentionally placed there to manipulate others into tiptoeing around them as if they are fragile. Like precariously placed landmines, you can’t see

them or predict with accuracy when you’re going to set one off. So, you walk gingerly, avoid taking chances, and handle this person with kid gloves… all at the expense of your own true self and happiness. I call it the porcupine tactic. Porcupines don’t raise their quills to be aggressive but rather because they feel threatened. They create an illusion of size with their quills to scare others off. These folks ‘raise their quills’ to get their way, See GRAY on 11

Hearing Loss Leads to Lost Cognitive Function

Austin wants to tell you about a very important finding in medical research. Any decline in hearing results in declines in cognitive performance and brain function. Audiology Specialists provides cognitive screening that can measure some aspects of cognitive performance. This is an in-office, computerized screening. This is not an IQ test or list of questions. It is a simple, automated assessment that takes about ten minutes to complete. The results of this screening are not affected by hearing loss. The results help your audiologist determine which hearing aid is most appropriate and ensures your hearing solutions are right for you. The screening can be repeated at any time in the future to identify changes in cognitive performance. Please call for more information or to schedule an appointment at 603-528-7700.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am due to have a mammogram in July, but around the same time I am supposed to have a chest CT as a follow-up to my chondrosarcoma cancer. I have a CT every other year, and an X-ray on the opposite years of both my affected arm and my lungs. Does a chest CT have the potential of showing a similar finding as a mammogram? I would just as soon not have to expose myself to so much radiation all in one month. I’m 66. There is a history of postmenopausal breast cancer in my family, in my mother’s mother. -- T.M.H. ANSWER: A mammogram is an X-ray that is designed spe-

cifically to look for abnormalities in breast tissue. Mammograms have been extensively studied and proven to reduce mortality in women between the ages of 50-74 (outside these ages, there remains extreme controversy). CT scans are X-rays taken from many angles and then reconstructed in a computer to provide a look at many slices of the part of the body being looked at. A CT scanner can be set to emphasize bones or soft tissue, and work is ongoing now with CT scans designed specifically for breast abnormalities. The CT scan you get as follow-up to your chondrosarcoma (a rare cancer of cartilage) is designed to look in lung tissue for abnormalities and has not been evaluated as a means of screening for breast cancer, although I do know that some may be found anecdotally. The CT scans you get as a part of your cancer follow-up are not an adequate substi-

tute for ongoing mammography, which is particularly important in your case due to a family history. I do understand the concern about radiation, but a mammogram has very little radiation -- approximately the same you would get from naturally occurring radiation sources in seven weeks of walking around. DEAR DR. ROACH: I read a news report that vasectomy increases risk of prostate cancer. Should men avoid this procedure due to concern for prostate cancer? -- T.S.V. ANSWER: Several studies have looked at this possibility, and the results are conflicting. A 2014 study of about 50,000 U.S. men showed an increase of about 15% in the risk of fatal prostate cancer, but a 2016 study of 360,000 U.S. men showed no increase in risk. In June 2019, a study of over 2 million Danish men showed a 15% increase in overall

prostate cancer risk. To put the risk in perspective, about 500 men would need to have a vasectomy for one additional man to get prostate cancer, in the Danish study. It is not clear that the vasectomy caused the prostate cancer. It is possible that there is something about men who choose vasectomy that puts them at higher risk to begin with; however, the authors were unable to find a known risk factor to support that possibility. Even if vasectomy does lead to an increased risk of prostate cancer, it still has similar or lower overall risk than other forms of birth control, and is a good choice for a man who is absolutely sure he does not want to father any more children, as a vasectomy should be considered permanent. Attempting reversal is possible, but there is no guarantee of success.

CHAPMAN from 8 ance can be considered self-ful, and when we give from a self-ful position we’re most able to sustain the benefits of our generosity for both ourselves and those around us. Over time, most or all relationships are challenged by differences in values and opinions. Rather than negating the benefits of close relationships, these experiences, when handled with authenticity and care, can serve to deepen our relationships both with ourselves and others. The life affirming experience of being known and accepted in our entirety is possibly one of the greatest gifts we can give to ourselves and others, and this happens in the context of genuine and intimate relationships. While all rela-

tionships have their difficulties, the overall benefits of prioritizing and deepening our most cherished connections create an ongoing opportunity to move through this world more fulfilled, resilient, healthier and happier. We can truly make our own and each other’s world better simply by showing up with compassion for ourselves and others. This article is part of an ongoing series of distilling evidencebased approaches to increasing happiness based on the work of Tal Ben-Shahar, PhD in his book Happier No Matter What: Cultivating Hope, Resilience & Purpose in Hard Times.

GRAY from 9 avoid taking responsibility, and wield power and control over others. Why? Because deep down they feel powerless. But a truly powerful person does not need to resort to behaving this way. Nothing you can do will change this person, so you must turn within for the solution. The best way to deal with them is to not deal with them. Develop iron-clad boundaries, making it crystal clear that you will not tolerate this type of behavior

from them. Boundaries can mean limiting your time with them, choosing not to ‘take the bait’ when the verbal barrage begins, or directly standing up to them. As a last resort, it might also mean burning the bridge that binds you. That’s a boundary, too. Leslie A. Letters From God This series of Letters From God is an attempt to put the thoughts of God as revealed in the Scriptures as they relate to individuals and the nation of the USA.

to pain. I did this so that you would fear engaging in things that would bring pain and as a result avoid the terrible consequences that might otherwise come into your life. What I created with respect to your physical bodies, I also created with respect to your spiritual relationship with me, your creator God. Since I am without any evil or sin, when I created the first man and woman, I designed them with no sin or evil so they could enjoy perfect & painless life with me forever. But I also told them that should they choose to disobey me they would incur a penalty of both physical death and spiritual separation from me for eternity (Genesis 2:1617). This would be the natural and supernatural consequence of disobedience because I cannot have relationship with anyone who has sin or evil within them. My holiness dispels the darkness, it doesn’t embrace it. This should have called for a healthy fear of me, not because I am irrational and petulant and would at any moment seek to hurt them for no cause. I am none of these things. This should have called for a fear because they recognized how perfect life was through my blessings and how painful it would be if they chose to disobey me. The fear in this case was designed to keep them from suffering the painful effects of disobedience that

was passed on to all humanity. Subsequent to their act of disobedience and separation I, in love, allowed pain to impact aspects of their life in order for that pain to bring them back to their senses and back to me so that they could have life with me forever (Genesis 3: 16-19). It was intended to be a motivation to return to me and allow me to pour out my love and life in your human lifetime and for eternity. It would be a useful tool to turn people away from their sinfulness, which always leads to death and then return to me and obedience, which will always lead to life. The fear of these consequences was a healthy fear designed to help not hurt. My prophet Isaiah expressed this well when he said,

“When your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness. Though grace is shown to the wicked, they do not learn righteousness; even in a land of uprightness they go on doing evil and regard not the majesty of the Lord.” (Isaiah 26:9-10). This is why I asked Solomon to write, “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” (Proverbs 9:10). Wisdom is skill at living. You can only be skillful at living if you follow me, your designer, and my design. Without the fear of consequences of pain for sin, you would continue on your merry way and, as your own expression says, “go to hell in a handbasket.” This is why I instructed the writer of Psalm 119 to repeat in quick succession

how pain and consequences for sin are the most important tools to bring you back to your senses and to me. In each case it brought them back to life. “Before I was afflicted, I went astray, but now I obey your word.” (:67) “It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.” (:71) “I know O Lord that your laws are righteous and in faithfulness you have afflicted me.” (:75) Please notice that the Psalmist recognized my love in these experiences of suffering when he said,

Letters From God

QUESTION: If You Are Good, Why Should We Fear You? Your question is a good one and very important to explain and understand. Let me begin by suggesting that your question seems to assume that any form of fear is bad and therefore, if I encourage those I created to fear me, that I am bad. I hope you have considered that not all fear is bad. In fact, fear is essential for life. Don’t you think there is a healthy fear of drugs, of fire, of nuclear energy, or electricity? I’m sure you do. In each of these areas and so many more there is the potential for good or evil. How you use them determines their benefit of danger. Some may wish to eliminate their use altogether due to a crippling irrational fear that they are only bad. Others who have a healthy fear, recognize the potential dangers for each but also understand that with proper use, particularly according to the design of the designer and their detailed instructions, they can be very beneficial, healthy and even lifegiving or preserving. When I, your designer, created you I designed your bodies to be very sensitive

“May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant.” (:76) Oh, how I wish everyone would fear me because I love them enough to allow them to suffer for their sin, so that they would turn back to me and the life only I can give. Will you? God These letters are written by a New Hampshire pastor.

Golf, Stories, And Francis Ouimet EST GAME EVER PLAYED became a movie, starring Shia LaBoeouf. It did well, despite a lack of superheroes or monsters. Who needs Spiderman when you have a real-life super-hero like Francis Ouimet? Recently revived interest in Ouimet’s story was inevitable, given that Brookline’s Country Club just hosted the 2022 U.S. Open, 109 years after Ouimet’s heroics. Folks who’d never heard of THE GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED learned See MOFFETT on 40

by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

I love books, movies, and good stories. And if the stories are true, then so much the better. Fiction has its place, of course. I used to read and watch much fiction. But as a history guy, I eventually migrated away from fiction to those true stories that are “better” or “stranger” than fiction—where they show the actual subjects during the movie credit roll. The lucrative Batman movie franchise satisfies a hungry market for escapist stuff. But (spoiler alert) I don’t think there ever was a real Batman. Or Superman. Or Spiderman (aka Peter Parker). Give me American Sniper. Or Patton. Or Seabiscuit. Or Hoosiers. (Inspired by actual history.) You can have the Star Wars movies. Did you ever wonder how all those Star Wars characters from that longago, far-away galaxy spoke such great English? (Except for the Wookie, of course.) Which brings us to a golf story. A marvelous story. A true story. A New England story. A book. A movie. A legend. The book was written in 2002 by Mark Frost. “THE GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED:

Francis Ouimet. Harry Vardon, Francis Ouimet, and the Birth of Modern Golf.” Ouimet had been a teenaged caddy at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts—the venue for the 1913 U.S. Open. As Ouimet knew the course first-hand, he competed for a spot in the tournament, and much to the surprise of all concerned, he qualified. But to play in the Open, he was required to have a caddy. Being poor—a former caddy himself—Ouimet asked if he could carry his own clubs. The august protectors of the upperclass integrity of golf were appalled. Without a caddy, Ouimet could

not compete. Enter ten-year-old Eddie Lowery. Little Eddie would drag Ouimet’s clubs around the course, while offering occasional shot suggestions. You can’t make this stuff up. And the story gets better. After 72 holes of play, Ouimet was tied with two of the world’s top golfers—British stars Harry Vardon and Ted Ray. Ouimet triumphed in the subsequent 18hole playoff, which featured the biggest galleries ever to watch golf in America—a gallery which earlier included U.S. President William Howard Taft. The 4th of July - Not So Pet Friendly: How to Keep Your Pet Safe and Calm The 4th of July. The day we gather with family and friends to celebrate our Independence and honor our country. We look forward to this celebratory day - with all the food, fun, and festivities – culminating in the highly-anticipated fireworks display. For pets, it’s a different story. The 4th of July is one of the most stressful and potentially dangerous times of the year for pets. While you and your family, friends, and neighbors are celebrating the holiday with fireworks, pets

are finding these festive activities anything but celebratory. “While July 4th is fun for us humans, fireworks and travel can be scary and traumatic for our pets. That’s why we emphasize how important it is to prepare for the holiday ahead of time,” says Chelsea Gennings, Co-Founder of Pet Releaf. “This time of year, we urge pet owners to make a plan before it’s too late — there are easy ways to make sure your pet stays safe and doesn’t go missing during fireworks season.”

Many pet parents assume that if their pet is not afraid of thunder or other loud noises, he will not be bothered by fireworks. This is not necessarily true. Even pets who normally are not bothered by thunder and other loud noises are often frightened and panicked by the cumulative effects of the fireworks, the excited voices outside, and being left alone inside the house. It’s important to plan ahead to ensure your pet is safe and comfortable. See PETS on 37

BIRDS For The

New England’s Wild Birds & Their Habitats

Helping Baby Birds Open Daily 10am - 5pm

An eastern bluebird fledgling is fed by its parent in New England. Fledglings have feathers and, at least to some degree, resemble their parents. Baby birds, on the other hand, have no or only fluffy feathers and appear helpless. CHRIS BOSAK PHOTO by Chris Bosak Contributing Writer

I received a text message from a friend last week after she found two baby birds on her deck. They had recently fallen out of a birdhouse she has hanging near the house. What to do with the babies? It’s a question I get fairly often in late spring and early summer. If you come across baby birds that have fallen out of the nest, the best thing to do is put them back in the nest. That is assuming you know where the nest is, of course. In my friend’s case,

she did know and she placed the baby birds back into the house. The mother returned shortly thereafter and all seems to be good. That advice may surprise some people because the old adage was that you should never touch a baby bird because the mother will reject any baby that has been touched by a human. Birds do not have a great sense of smell (well, most birds anyway) so they will not abandon a baby that was touched. Besides, a mother or father bird has no way of getting the baby back into the nest.

I was leaving church one day years ago when a small crowd had gathered near a tree by the parking lot. A baby robin had fallen out of its nest and a small debate was going on about what to do with it. Some said leave it alone, some said construct a makeshift nest and some said put it back into the nest. The nest was clearly visible directly above from where the baby struggled on the ground. A few people in the crowd knew me as the bird man, so they trustSee BOSAK on 40

Cold Spring Striped Bass Kayak Fishing by Tim Moore Contributing Writer

I’m a full-time fishing guide. I consider myself to be fairly successful. I don’t know if I’m the best ever, that wouldn’t be for me to decide, but there are none more passionate. I’m driven by my desire to see my clients do well when they fish with me. This desire is second only to their safety. I’ve told many a client that the only thing I can guarantee is that I will work as hard as I can for them to catch as many fish as they can. One of my biggest nightmares, something that stresses me out every time, is when a strong cold front moves in the night before a guide trip. Nothing seems to shut the fishing down like a cold front will and some days, try as I may, the fishing is tougher than tough. Cold fronts generally shut the fishing down because it cools surface water. Fish that normally hang in shallow water will move to deeper water to find warmer or more stable water temps, with the later often dominating. One thing fish do not like is fluctuating water temps. Cold fronts also, and sometimes more so, affect baitfish movements and locations. Another factor is the density of cold water. Cold water is more dense than warm water and

Sometimes the guide is asked to fish. Reluctantly, Tim agreed this day and was rewarded. “It feels like part of my tip when I get to fish with my clients,” he says. will actually sink. A really strong cold front can send surface water temps plummeting, which causes the colder water to sink down through the water column until it meets water of the same temperature. This can cause a drastic shift in the depth of a thermocline (when there is one) and shut the fish off. I recently struggled with cold front conditions a couple weeks ago. It began when not one, but two cold fronts moved through one night. I had striped bass kayak fishing trips scheduled. The night before the first one was just a couple days after a

full moon, which already brings its share of difficulties in the form of high running tides, lots of debris in the water, and fast currents. A cold front on top of it left me feeling like I had done something wrong. As expected, the fishing was tough. Wave after wave of striped bass were filtering out of the Piscataqua River, and none of them would even react to a lure. They were just exiting the river. All of my normal lures and techniques were failing miserably. So, what did I do? I adapted. I rarely fish when I’m on a guide trip unless I’m with someone who really

wants me to, usually repeat clients. One exception is when the fishing is tough. I will often fish so that I can experiment with techniques and lures I don’t normally use. It might be something that typically works See MOORE on 33

American Independence Museum Mini-Camps Explore Being “Reflective Patriots” Welcoming campers back, the American Independence Museum is pleased to offer Thursday Mini-Camps for children ages 6-10. Mini-Camp sessions will run Thursday July 14, 21, and 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the grounds of the museum’s historic Folsom Tavern. During each session, campers will immerse themselves in hands-on 18th century life, uncovering the stories of the people who helped build our nation and how they can continue to be a part of America’s unfolding story. Each mini-camp will focus on one of the following themes: freedom, compromise, and we the people. Camp-

ers will look at what freedom meant to different people living in colonial America, how these perspectives got involved in the fight, and how compromise between groups was reached in order to found the United States of America. Over the course of the summer, participants will get to dress in historic 18thcentury clothing, try their hand at colonial crafts, see what revolutionary camp life was like, and create their own “printing press.” Campers will uncover the stories of individuals who have the power to make change and keep America strong. “We are so excited to offer summer programming that is fun

McKinney’s career skyrocketed when he began making the rounds of NYC comedy clubs and the New York Times called him “destined for stardom.” The Portsmouth, NH native spent early years on the Seacoast, then found himself in Maine when the family moved up the coast to Kittery, ME. After high school and college there, he turned to law enforcement, serving as a York County Deputy Sheriff, patrolling the woods – eventually feeling the pull to stand-up comedy rather than enforcing folks to stand down. He now has two Comedy Central Specials, including one with Rob Gronkowski, and has appeared multiple times on the Tonight Show and Conan O’Brien. Along the way, he signed sitcom development deals with major outlets and TV & movie credits include The King of Queens,100 Centre Street, The Zoo Keeper and Here Comes the Boom. Summer Fun! The Best Summer Ever Starts Right Here!

Fun And Healthy For Kids: Little Sprouts Veggie Hunts At Moulton Farm If you want to have fun with your children or grandchildren this summer, get them connected with the outdoors and the environment, or encourage some healthier eating habits, consider adding at least one of Moulton Farm’s guided “Little Sprouts Veggie Hunts” to your plans. These fun events combine the enthusiasm of Easter egg hunts with exploring where food comes from and how it grows. “Little Sprouts Veggie Hunts” brings children ages 5 to 9, accompanied by a parent or grandparent, into the farm’s fields with farm staff to learn how each vegetable grows before the hunting begins. “I’m very excited about this opportunity for children to connect with nature, food, and how things grow,” says Riley Wallace, a certified teacher joining the farm’s team this summer for the Little Sprouts sessions. Riley will pair up with a farm’s field crew member for the adventures in the farm’s fields. “Driving a tractor is definitely not in my skill set,” she says with a laugh. “I’ll leave that to my brother,” referring to her brother Kyle Lacasse, the farm’s field manager. A T-shirt for each child and the vegetables the children find during the veggie hunt are included in the event fee. Each veggie

den supplies, including soils and amendments. The farm’s market has baked goods and prepared foods from the farm’s kitchen and bakery, seafood from Sal’s Fresh Seafood, cider doughnuts from Cider Bellies, and a quality selection of meats, cheeses, and other items from northern New England producers. More information is available at MoultonFarm.com

Connecting children with nature, food, and how things grow is part of the fun of the Little Sprouts Veggie Hunts at Moulton Farm says Riley Wallace, a certified teacher joining the farm team for the veggie hunts. Five hunts will be held in July and August for children who are five to nine years old. More information is available at MoultonFarm. com hunt costs $12 for the first child in a family group and $10 for each additional child in the family group. There is no cost for parents or grandparents accompanying children. Each session is open to children who are five to nine years old. Moulton Farm’s guided “Little Sprouts Veggie Hunts” will be held on the following dates in 2022: Tuesday, July 19, at 10 am Wednesday, July 27, at 10 am Wednesday, August 3, at 10 am Wednesday, August

10, at 10 am Tuesday, August 16, at 10 am Tickets for each session can be purchased in advance at the farm or on the day of the event at the farm’s market. Moulton Farm, located at 18 Quarry Road off Route 25 in Meredith, practices sustainable agriculture and provides the highest quality fruits and vegetables while preserving its rich soil for future generations. spent a lot if it studying the local history and became intrigued by the case of Chartier, who was from Chelmsford, who was at a party in Billerica the night she disappeared. The two explorers read

up on everything they could about the Chartier case including the Charley Project which tracks missing persons. “We realized there was a dirt road leading down from the powerlines on the Billerica side of the Concord River,” said Hans. “The story goes the kids were partying at a house in Billerica

and most likely under the powerline as well at about two in the morning. We thought she could have gone into the Concord River with her car, either by accident, suicide, or homicide. We had a pretty good idea where the car would have gone into the water.” On August 21st, 2021,

they started searching the Concord River with the side scan sonar unit starting at the Lawrence Street Bridge in Lowell, where the rapids begin, south to the dam in North Billerica. They scanned 2.5 miles of the Concord River, from one embankment to the other. “We actually found her car the very first day, but we didn’t know it,” said Hans. They were first assembling “Targets Of Interest” (TOI) something that is first seen on the sonar that would need further exploration. “We did an inventory of about a dozen targets that day not knowing one them was Chartier’s car,” said Hans. “Some of the images were so badly degraded I could not make heads or tails of them. I would describe her car as a rectangular anomaly definitely worthy of a closer look.” The car was about eighty-feet south of the entry into the river from the dirt road under the power line. After that initial scan collecting the TOIs for further evaluation, both Hans and Bruce had to go back to their other lives for a while and it wasn’t until six weeks

later, in late October, that the two finally got back to their search to get a closer look at the targets they had found. “We put Bruce’s ROV, which is a swimming robot with high-definition cameras, gripper claws and halogen lights, into the water and flew it down to all of the TOIs,” said Hans. One target turned out to be a 1972 Dodge Dart, the type of vehicle Chartier was driving that night. “The visibility was not good, anywhere from six to fifteen inches,” said Hans. “The first thing we saw was a classic 1970s style round headlight. The ROV flew around the car just off the bottom and we saw that it was upright, pretty much fully intact except for a roof and had 4-foot high invasive species growing in the back seat. We saw that the hubcaps had the word ‘Dodge’ embossed in them, but, we still couldn’t confirm at that point it was a Dodge Dart.” Hans then put on his scuba gear and dove down to the car, and confirmed it was a Dodge Dart. He matched the color, and what was left of the vinyl roof to See CASE on 35

A 1972 Dodge Dart similar to the one in which Judy Chartier went missing .

Hans Hug, Jr., has been searching various bodies of water over the years to find an array of things both expected and unexpected. CASE from 34 Chartier’s car. Both windows were rolled up and he went into the car through the hole in the roof to search for a VIN number, but it was impossible to find due to the visibility and deterioration inside the vehicle, notably the dashboard area.

“After our find, Bruce told a police friend of his at the Billerica Police Dept. and he in turn mentioned it to the Chelmsford Police since they were the ones with the Cold Case file,” said Hans. “They called us, we showed them the video and sonar evidence of the find, and they were

floored.” The Massachusetts State Police Dive Team was notified by the Chelmsford Police Detectives, who then dove at the site on November 1st, 2021. “They went in and dismantled about half the car,” said Hans. “They brought it up the river

to the dirt road where it was removed. They found some personal possessions of Chartier, like a purse with an ID. They also found about eighty percent of her body.” The story of the discovery of Chartier’s car and remains of course made news all over Massachusetts and then went nationwide. It was also the story of two men, with similar interests and extra time on their hands, teaming up to solve a thirty-nine year old Cold Case that had somehow eluded the authorities for decades.

“I give a lot of the credit to Bruce,” said Hans. “He was the one who started it and did the initial research, but he didn’t have all the equipment he knew was needed to conduct the search, so he called me. It was a real team effort.” To find out more about Hans Hug, Jr and his Sonar Search and Recovery business, you can visit his website at Sonarsar.com. His email is info@sonarsar.com

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, June 30, 2022 — PETS from 16 Do Not Take Your Pet To A Fireworks Display This should be obvious, but we have to say it. It’s never a good idea to bring your pet to a fireworks display. Yes, it may be alluring – having your furkid by your side as you “ooh and aah” at the “bombs bursting in air”. Guarantee your pet will not be amused. Do Not Leave Your Pet Outdoors Never leave your pet outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a chain. Out of fear, a pet who normally wouldn’t leave the yard may escape and become lost, or become entangled in his chain, risking injury or death. In fact, the July 4th holiday is a very busy time for animal shelters across the U.S. They report taking in a higher number of dogs that run off during firework festivities. Additionally, many police stations log higher volumes of stray dog calls and barking complaints on July 4th compared to any other day of the year. Create A Comfortable Indoor Space Keep your pet in your home, in a comfortable and quiet area, with the shades drawn. If your pet is crate trained, then the crate is a great choice. Some pets can become destructive when frightened, so be sure that you’ve removed any items that your pet could destroy or that would be harmful to your pet if chewed. Leave a TV on or radio playing at normal volume to keep your pet company – whether you’re home or away

attending 4th of July celebrations. If your pet seeks comfort in a bathtub, under a bed or other small space . . . let him. Do not try to lure him out. If the space is safe and it makes him feel more secure, let him be. Calming & AntiAnxiety Remedies If you know that your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder and fireworks, you can try some alternative remedies that many pet parents have found to be helpful in calming their furkids. CBD is one potential option. It can be very helpful in relieving situational stress because of its soothing and relaxing properties. According to Chelsea from Pet Releaf, “Since we’ve been in the CBD business for over a decade, we know that CBD is perfect for stressful events like fireworks and travel. And, our Stress Releaf products are 100% safe for pets. We use organic ingredients such as ashwagandha and chamomile, so they’re completely natAural and have no psychoactive properties.” As far as how much CBD to give your pet, and when to offer it - well that depends. Chelsea notes that since each pet is different, there is no onesize-fits-all answer. For example, a large pet will need a higher dosage than a small pet, and a sick pet will need a higher dosage than a healthy pet. Generally the effects of CBD will start to kick in between 30 to 60 minutes. Therefore, it is recommended to give your pet CBD about one hour before the fireworks begin.

In addition to CBD, anti-anxiety vests are great stress-reducing alternatives. Similar to swaddling a newborn, these snug wraps have been shown to help relax pets during highly stressful situations. If you know that your pet will get anxious during fireworks, but you’re still not sure about trying CBD or a vest, then be sure to call your veterinarian to ask for a recommendation. Take A Car Ride Really? If your pet is most comfortable in the car, some pet parents find that driving around with their pet in the car helps to calm him. However, it’s important to never leave your pet alone in the

car. With only hot air to breathe inside a car, your pet can suffer serious health effects, even death in a few short minutes. Partially-opened windows do not provide sufficient air, but they do provide an opportunity for your pet to be stolen. Leaving Your Pet In A Parked Car Can Be A Deadly Mistake. Tag & Chip Your Pet Make sure your pet is microchipped and is wearing an identification tag so that if he does become lost, he can be returned promptly. Ensure your pets are comfortable and safe this July 4th holiday. Happy Independence Day!

“Ellie” Do you want a little hound who is wound for sound? Sadly for Ellie most people don’t … But our Ellie here is cute as a button & sweet to boot! Unfortunately, most folks can’t handle her high pitched barking and enormous energy stores. Which is how she ended up at the Lakes Region Humane Society in Ossipee. Ellie is just a year and a half old, spayed, microchipped, current on vaccinations, and beyond healthy. She is looking for a home who will encourage her athletic stylings perhaps by way of running, hiking, agility training, nose work, really any consistent and daily stimulation will do! She is eager to learn and would benefit from basic manners training. Please help us get Ellie out of this stressful and frustrating kennel environment and into an active home ASAP by sharing her story. A familiar Ice Cream Spot in the Region. SMITH from 38 tors from Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and elsewhere, as well as the locals had additional holiday activities to choose from in the Laconia area. There was baseball at the Pearl Street Grounds with the Laconia City Club playing on Saturday and Monday evenings with the first pitch scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on both evenings. On Saturday night the T.T.K. Club of Manchester came to town and the Dover Baxter Mills Club was the opponent for the Monday Night game. Old time local baseball fans might like to know that Laconia lead-off hitter Norman Brough had a batting average of .320 and fellow-player and sometimes leading batter Joe Stitt was hitting at a .323 clip. Eighteen year old thirdbaseman Ray Simoneau had a .321 average. Clem Dickson and Johnny Lyman were also hitting over the .300 mark. For baseball fans who wanted to see a came on Saturday, the 4th, tickets could be purchased to join others in riding a bus to Boston to see the Red Sox play Phila-

delphia. If a 1948 visitor didn’t find something that appealed to them of the activities previously listed, don’t forget that movies were popular around the previous half-century mark. Avid movie fans could have seen Edward Robinson and Burt Lancaster in “ All My Sons “ at the Colonial Theater on the 3rd plus “ Arthur Takes Over “ and Louis-Walcott fight pictures (round by round, blow by blow), and then go back on the 4th or 5th to see “The Bride Goes Wild” with Van Johnson and June Allyson. The additional movie on those nights was “Man From Texas.” For those who wanted something different the Gardens Theater was also offering double features with a change in movies from Saturday to Sunday. The choices were “Corvette K-225” and “Wings Over Honolulu” or “Song of Idaho” and “Angels Alley.” Other movies could be seen at The Lakeside in Lakeport, Key Theatre in Meredith, the Regal in Franklin and at Good Neighbors at the Winnipesaukee Campgrounds in the Weirs. There were no dupli-

cate movies in the area so the choices were many. The Good Neighbor program, sponsored by the Camp Association in the Weirs, had other events along with the offerings of old time movies, including Sunday evening Worship Services and food sales on Saturday. The association’s program was directed by Rev. Oscar M. Polhemus, pastor of the Weirs Methodist Church. Forty-seven area businesses joined in placing a full page advertisement in the July 3, 1948 Laconia Evening Citizen. “Today,” they wrote, “with the whole world in a ‘topsy turvy’ situation, it is well that we, who are privileged to call ourselves Americans, give sober thought to the meaning of the day.” They further said, “We, the firms and individuals listed below, thankful to Almighty God that we are privileged to live and do business in so fine a community as ours and be citizens under the flag we love, sponsor this advertisement in the hope that all citizens this Fourth of July will rededicate themselves to the task of keeping our country free and the best place in the world in which to live.”

MOFFETT from 15 of an amazing true story that changed America’s sports landscape. (Interestingly, a Brit— Matt Fitzpatrick—triumphed in Brookline at this year’s Open.) So, fiction is fine, but give me real-life stories. Amazing stories happen regularly in life, in sports, and on golf courses all over. And wonderful and compelling sports stories are told every day at every 19th hole at country clubs across the land. True stories? You bet. Or my name isn’t Peter Parker. RICH PARKER Lebanon native Rich Parker was a threesport standout at Plymouth State in the early eighties, excelling at baseball, basketball, and golf. He later coached the Dartmouth golf team. A Facebook friend, I noted with interest a post he made about going to the Open in Brookline—his first trip to an Open since he played in one at Medinah Country Club in Illinois. Like Francis Ouimet, Parker actually qualified to participate in a U.S. Open—the 1990 version which was won

BOSAK from 17 ed my opinion about what to do. I was even elected to be the one to pick up the bird and put it back into the nest. The nest was a few feet out of my reach, so a few bystanders lifted me up just enough to get the bird back into its space. If you do now know where the nest it, or if the nest is out of reach, then you can make a new nest with a cardboard box and some dry materials inside. If possible, try to affix the nest to the house or a tree out of reach of ground predators, or at least place the new nest off the ground. The mother bird will hopefully come feed it and tend to it. Unless you really know what you are doing, and I do not count myself in that category, you shouldn’t try to feed the baby yourself. Leave that to the mother bird. If you are certain the mother is dead and the baby or babies will perish, you can collect them into a box with a lid on it and bring the birds to a certified wildlife rehabilitation center. Make sure there are holes punched into the box. Everything I’ve writ-

ten so far pertains to baby birds, as in no or only a few fuzzy feathers and basically helpless blobs. Fledglings are a different matter. Fledglings are bigger and have most of their feathers. They can hop and maybe even fly short distances. The usual course of action for finding a fledgling that looks to be struggling is to leave it alone. it is likely learning to fly and the mother and/or father are probably close by watching. These birds are young and awkward-looking, but they are not helpless. If you are certain the bird has been abandoned or if it is injured, then you can put it in a box and bring it to a wildlife rehabilitator. The website www. avianhaven.org has a great flow diagram about helping baby and fledgling birds. Click on the “Bird Rescue” tab to find the diagram. The same is true for young mammals, such as deer, that are found alone. Unless you are certain the mother has been killed, the best thing to do is leave the baby or babies alone. The mother will return to care for the babies. It goes against our nature as human beings, but sometimes the best thing to do when you find something that is seemingly helpless is to leave it alone.

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, June 30, 2022 — MAILBOAT from 2 try to reach its target of 2.0%.How did we reach this debacle? The Covid pandemic during the period 2020 to 2021 necessitated the implementation of relief plans, which had the Treasury Department pump almost $4 trillion in programs and tax credits into the U.S. economy. The availability of these funds and the savings accumulated by consumers in 2020 and 2021 provided a springboard of demand unleashed in the last half of 2021 and into 2022. This created the primary impetus for escalating inflation. A secondary cause has been the supply chain constraints, and a tertiary cause is the Ukrainian War. But where was the Fed in its role to implement monetary policy and control inflation? During 20202021 the Fed kept its federal funds rate at a bottom floor level of 0.00%-0.25%, and with Quantitative Easing (QE) increased its balance sheet assets from $4 trillion to $9 trillion. This monetary policy was designed to combat the economic impact of the pandemic, but inflationary pressures were ramping up around the middle of 2021 when I stated to family members the Fed should be increasing interest rates and ending its QE program. The Fed continued its near zero interest rate and large monthly purchases of tens of billions of dollars in Treasury securities into 2022, which increased the money supply and the availability of bank loans. This was expansionist and continued the upward inflationary pressures.

As inflation kept surging the Fed erroneously believed the increased inflation was transitory and would subside. The Fed finally woke up and determined inflation was pervasive and started belatedly raising interest rates and ending its purchases of Treasury securities in March 2022. Note: The Fed is a non-partisan entity responsible for the implementation of monetary policy. The U.S. administrations are responsible for fiscal policy (e.g. spending, taxes). Donald Moskowitz Londonderry, NH.

Electric Rates To The Editor: Electricity rates in New Hampshire are about to double. Readers should ask why. The following was posted by the New Hampshire Department of Energy: “According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), over half of New Hampshire’s electricity generation is from nuclear energy. Approximately 25% is generated by natural gas while 7% is generated by hydropower, 6% is produced by biomass, 3% is wind, 1.6% coal and about 1% from solar.” While the price of natural gas has increased by 2 and a half times from a year ago it is only a quarter of the supply. Has the cost of producing nuclear, wind, hydro, biomass or solar increased? Isn’t it time Governor Sununu and his handpicked members of the State’s Public Utility Commission represented New Hampshire consumers

instead of greedy corporations? Walter Hamilton Portsmouth, NH.

Actual And Alternative Histories - Part I To The Editor: Actual history: In 1933 Germany’s governmental system featured two heads of state - president and chancellor, ostensibly a power sharing arrangement. Paul von Hindenburg,a WWI hero but advanced in age,was the incumbent president. One of his duties was to appoint a new chancellor after recent elections, and an upstart named Adolph Hitler was at the top of the list due to his party’s electoral showing. Mr. Hindenburg was reluctant to appoint Mr.Hitler as he despised both him and his party’s platform. He was very susceptible, however,to any and al suggestion now The 43 year old Adolph Hitler seized upon this and constantly badgered and browbeat the president until he finally gave in and pronounced him chancellor. The next year (1934) Paul von Hindenburg died, and the German government consolidated the positions of president and chancellor into one, Fuhrer (Leader). The rest is a matter of record. Fast forward to 2022, and of all places the United States is

beset with a political situation similar to Germany’s problems of the early 1930s. Not only politically but economically as well: the figurehead of state purposely creating conditions high inflation due to his fixation on technologies that do not even fully exist yet. He is no hero as was Paul von Hindenburg previously mentioned, but simply a career politician of no account. He has dedicated the last years of his life to “proving them all wrong”, but the only thing he has proven is how easily he is manipulated by questionable, unelected captains. 42 MALKIN from 6 guilty until proven innocent. Individuals accused of posing safety threats can be stripped of firearms for a year under a civil hearing process where the accused are barred from responding to allegations and the standard of proof is lowered. Second Amendment advocates have warned from the get-go that axgrinders would wield the law to exact vengeance. They were dead-on. In April, after perpetrating a five-year hoax nightmare, Fort Collins, Colorado, mother Susan Holmes was convicted of lying on a red-flag petition about a Colorado

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, June 30, 2022 — State University police officer who had been cleared in the suicideby-cop death of her son in 2017. Holmes had falsely claimed to be a relative of the targeted officer. She is scheduled to be sentenced this month. In Florida, overzealous sheriffs have wielded the Republican-supported red-flag law to crack down on children as young as 8 years old. Good luck clearing your falsely accused kid’s name when his or her juvenile records -- unprotected by Florida’s red-flag law -- get into the hands of sensationalist, pro-gun-control media.

Military veterans know the pain and damage that can be inflicted by a “red-flag retaliation first, due process later” regime. I’ve reported previously on how the Department of Veterans Affairs has recklessly red-flagged “disruptive” military patients without due process, transparency or accountability in the name of “safety” based on arbitrary definitions of who and what constitutes a mental health menace. If you dare vent “frustration about VA services and/or wait times” (which led to scores of deaths during the Obama years), threaten lawsuits or make

“frequent unwarranted visits to the emergency department or telephone calls to facility staff,” you can be branded, blacklisted and restricted by “Disruptive Behavior Committees” from accessing health care by the government that sent you off to war to defend everyone else’s lives. VA red-flaggers can “manufacture tone, the content of what you’re saying, and will even ascribe actions to you that you did not perform,” Army veteran David Scott Strain told me three years ago, when he warned of parallel risks with civilian redflag laws. Disabled Air Force veteran and veterans advocate/attorney Benjamin Krause, who exposes the Soviet-style targeting of veterans flagged for exercising their First Amendment rights, calls the feds’ star-chamber procedures “straight out of a

totalitarian regime.” The potential for mass deprivation of civil liberties simply cannot be understated in the context of end-stage America’s woke psychosis. If you stray from the politically correct position on VA incompetence, guns, masks, vaccines, transgenders in sports, Drag Queen Story Hour, election fraud, demographic transformation, Black Lives Matter or abortion, you and your children can be tagged, flagged and bagged for life. The inmates run the asylum -- and Republican traitors are supplying the keys. Michelle Malkin’s email address is MichelleMalkinInvestigates@ protonmail.com. SHAPIRO from 6 aside their ideological commitments to leftism, they’d cement our civilizational foundations rather than keep eroding them. Perhaps the center isn’t holding because it shouldn’t hold. That center has sought to enshrine its own power by taking from both the Left and the Right; it has no coherent ideology of its own. And that false center is now coming apart with centrifugal force, torn between those who believe in the fundamental institutions of the West and those who wish to see them supplanted. you’re making jokes?” I ask. “I think that they know what our intention is,” answers Juliet. “They just don’t like us.” Recently, Twitter banned the Bee. Their offense was tweeting an article that named Assistant Secretary of Health Rachel Levine “Babylon Bee’s Man of the Year.” Levine is a transgender woman. Calling her the man of the year is a joke I wouldn’t make. But it doesn’t need to be censored. Twitter says they’ll allow the Bee back on the platform only if they delete the tweet. Mann says he won’t. “Twitter has the capability to just delete the tweet themselves. They want us to bend the knee and be the ones to click, ‘Yes, we acknowledge hateful conduct.’ We’re not going to do that.” Today, a lot of comedians attract sizable audiences by mocking the left. Some I found funny are JP Sears, Ryan Long and FreedomToons. The culture is changing. The highest rating late-night comic these days is often not Colbert, Kimmel or Fallon, but Greg Gutfeld of Fox. Even a few left-leaning comedians like Ricky Gervais and Dave Chappelle are mocking the intolerant left. “I talk about AIDS, famine, cancer, the Holocaust, rape, pedophilia ... the one thing you mustn’t joke about is identity politics,” says Gervais in his recent Netflix special. Professional media critics trashed him for that. But the special was hugely popular with the public. The Rotten Tomatoes

ratings are revealing. Critics gave Gervais’ special a 29% rating, calling it “terribly unfunny” and “a detestable combination of smug and obtuse.” Viewers gave it a 92% rating. The same is true of Chapelle’s latest special, “The Closer.” Critics give it just 40%. The audience gives it 95%. Clearly, many people are tired of smug, condescending humor. I’m glad the Babylon Bee, and others, give us an alternative.

Hong Kong’s last British Governor lamented recently that Beijing’s crackdown on Hong’s Kong’s civil liberties has “been a lot worse” than expected. “I thought there was a prospect China would keep its word, and I’m sorry that it hasn’t,” Patten said in London. Beijing is strangling the proverbial Golden Goose. While Hong’s Kong’s economy has remained largely free and highly competitive, both Beijing’s political crackdowns in 2021 and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have begun to tarnish this once thriving international business hub and its 7.6 million inhabitants. Hong Kong’s political deterioration has been startlingly quick. The human rights monitor Freedom House states, “The people of Hong Kong… traditionally enjoyed substantial civil liberties and the rule of law under their local constitution, the Basic Law.” However, the enactment of the National Security Law in 2020 seriously undermined the ‘one country, two systems’ framework.” The Chinese Communist Party now uses a new system of “patriots governing Hong Kong,” as a way to vet and pick candidates in local elections. Viewing a global list of comparators and benchmarks for political and civil rights, Hong Kong came in at 43rd/100 and was listed as Partly Free. As recently as 2017 Hong Kong ranked 61/100 in the ratings. China however scored an abysmal 9/100. Conversely nearby democratic Taiwan ranks as 94/100! Press freedoms have

changed appallingly for the worse. Since China assumed control there was a slow erosion of media freedoms. Now the press is encouraged to “be patriotic” and support the Beijing party line. While there was less direct censorship until recently, Hong Kong media exercises wide self-censorship. Last year China shut down the independent Apple Daily newspaper and arrested a number of journalists including its pro-democracy owner Jimmy Lai. The French media freedom barometer watchdog Reporters Without Borders cites Hong Kong’s stark decline. During 2017, Hong Kong ranked 73 out of 180 countries; by 2021 it slipped to 80 out of 180, and by 2022, crashed to 148 out of 180! China ranks 175/180! In 1997, many pundits argued Hong Kong’s freewheeling freedoms and rights would soon change China. Sadly it turns out China’s communist system seems to have changed Hong Kong!
