Lakeside Living Expo Is Not Your Typical Home Show “The big question we asked ourselves was ‘Where do we get these things?’” Suzette recalled. It was from this simple conversation sprang the idea for The Lakeside Living Expo which is returning for its fifth big year at the spacious
Gunstock Mountain Resort in Gilford, Friday through Sunday, July 20-22nd. “We wanted to make the Expo a one-stop shopping experience for second home owners as well as year-round folks who love their lake living experience.”
The Expo is not a crafts fair or even a typical seasonal home show. The Anthony’s have worked hard to bring an eclectic variety of exhibitors that encompass the expansive grounds, four giant tents and two spacious buildings. The Expo is See expo on 12

Saturday, July 21st, Michael Desplaines, executive director of Castle in the Clouds will give a power point presentation on the ongoing restoration work of the Castle at the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum on Rte 3 in The Weirs, next to Funspot. The Lucknow Estate was built during 1910 to 1914 by Thomas Plant, a self-made millionaire who built it as his retirement home. He died penniless in the early 1940s as a result of bad investments, and as such the house was never modernized or redecorated. Summercamp Just Love to Sing!, a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to educating the public with regard to the musical arts will be holding a Music Theatre Summercamp with the production of “Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs”. Lecture On Founding Folk Art Collections At Rufus Porter Museum When Jean Lipman searched in the 1930s for who had painted all the circa 1824-1840 New England wall murals, she eventually discovered they were by Rufus Porter and his nephew, Jonathan Poor. Her identification of him eventually became part of her famous biography, Rufus Porter, Yankee Pioneer, published in 1969. Jean Lipman was a renowned folk art collector and the publisher of Art in America magazine. Elizabeth Stillinger and Ruth Wolfe, a former associate of Jean Lipman’s, will discuss Jean’s collection on July 27 in Bridgton, Maine, as part of the Rufus Porter Museum’s annual Cultural Heritage Series program. There will be a reception and book signing at the Museum at 5pm on Friday, July 27, followed by the lecture at the First Congregational Church at 33 S. High Street at 7:00 pm. The talk is offered free to the public, although donations are welcome at the door. The Rufus Porter Museum is located at 67 N. High Street in Bridgton, on Rte 302. Celebrate SB 372 To The Editor: New Hampshire parents and children should annually celebrate June 27th. On that day, the NH Legislature enacted SB 372 which helps the children of low and middle income families attend the schools of their choice rather than being trapped in failing and mediocre public schools. On June 27th, 251 Republicans and one Democrat overrode Governor Lynch’s veto of SB 372. The other Democrat legislators joined Governor Lynch in trying to protect the teacher’s unions and the educational establishment which provides Democrats so much campaign support but which has been increasingly failing the children of New Hampshire and the United States for the last 50 years. We have looked to the
“experts” to solve America’s public education problems, but their answers are only more spending, more centralized control, and more politically motivated programs. As educational control has moved from local to state to national control, it has done an increasingly poorer job of educating our students. SB 372 helps parents move their children away from failing schools. Eventually, public schools will need to improve, helping all students, or they will be left with few or no students. The important thing is that New Hampshire students will get better educations and be better prepared to survive in a very competitive world. I cannot think of any legislation that is more beneficial to the citizens of New Hampshire than SB 372. Every supporter of

this legislation should be thanked. Every opponent should be replaced. They will try to buy politicians to stymie or repeal this legislation. If the citizens of New Hampshire want truly improved education for their children, then they will have to guard this legislation (SB 372) against those politicians who are willing to trade off our children’s well-being for special interest campaign contributions. History Lesson? To The Editor: For some time, I have been reading Congressman Guinta’s very interesting column in the Times. He sounds very sincere and committed to helping the citizens of New Hampshire. Unfortunately, when I tried to contact Representative Guinta, via his website, he would not even accept my email? He utilizes a screening program that will not accept email from anyone not it the first district. Yes, my mailing address is not in the first district. However I do own property in both Hampton and Nashua. I pay a considerable amount of property tax in his first district. Should not my voice be, at least, heard by said Congressman? As I recall, there was a disagreement, in Boston Harbor, a while back. The issue, even then, was “Taxation without representation.” Perhaps the Congressman needs a history lesson? Silly Season This is sure to be a tough election year for me. I have been runby Brendan Smith n i n g f o r Weirs Times Editor Governor under the Flatlander Ticket since 2000. I have received my share of mud and tossed some as well, but this year I am hunkering down for a good fight. I’m not sure who my opponents will be yet. On the Republican side, it is Ovide Lamontagne going against Kevin Smith. If Smith gets the nomination it will be very confusing to say the least. He already has campaign signs out reading “Smith For Governor.” I don’t mean to start anything but he stole that from me. I have been using “Smith For Governor” signs for twelve years now and I kind of own it. To be fair, he could have at least made the signs read “Kevin Smith For Governor.” It would have made this all less confusing and they would have made nice gifts for my brother Kevin for his birthday as well. Still, I’m going to let that one go. After all, a few runs up and down the highway and I save myself some money on campaign signs. Just kidding….maybe! Then there is Ovide Lamontage. I’ve met him and he’s a nice guy, but he’s put a shambles to my campaign strategy from 2010 when three guys named John were running for Governor. I thought people should vote for me because there has never been a Brendan elected Governor of New Hampshire seeing it is not a real common name. My campaign
slogan was “Let’s Flush These Johns.” But running against a guy named Ovide really takes that card out of play. I’ll have to devise a new strategy if he wins. On the Democrat side there is a woman named Jackie Cilley running for the Gubernatorial nomination. (I’ve always been confused by the term “Gubernatorial” Why isn’t it “Governatorial?” Sounds like we are electing a new “Guber.” These are the kinds of things that keep me awake at night.”) Having a candidate named Cilley would be easy. “Do you really want a Governor who is Cilley?” I could ask the massive crowds that attend my campaign BBQs. I would have their attention for as long as they hadn’t yet been allowed to partake of the free spare ribs and cole slaw buffett. “Elect me and you won’t have a Cilley Governor!!” I could go on and on like this for minutes until either someone asked me where I stand on the issues or the spare ribs start to get too cold. It would also be fun when some of her friends took to the road to defend her against my attacks. “She isn’t really Silly,” they would say over and over again giving me the opening to come back with: “If she is not Silly then who is she? I demand to see her birth certificate and, while we are at it, how about her tax returns since she was six years old.” This would cause Cilley’s campaign manager, Liz Merry, to come out and defend here leading to newspaper headlines such as “Merry defends Cilley campaign.” You can’t make this stuff up.
As far as the other candidates on the Democrat side, I don’t know who they are and I don’t care. I already have that part of my campaign strategy mapped out and I can only hope she gets the nomination. It will be too much fun. So, banking on Cilley getting the nomination, I only have to wait until either Kevin Smith or Ovide Lamontagne get the nomination so I can figure out how to structure my negative campaign against them. I have been in this candidate game for a long time and I know that there are really only two steps in running a successful one. The first, and most important, is to figure out the best and most effective way to slander your opponent. The second one is not so crucial but, in the interest of being fair to the voters it must be done. You need to have some actual ideas in what to do about different things: Taxes, regulations, etc. You don’t have to work too hard at it since you can always change your mind later, but voters, annoying as they can be, do want to hear about some of the things you’d do. After that, it’s back to the real fun. Some good mud-slinging. I’ll be back in a few weeks to give you an update on my campaign. By the way, for whatever reason, I am now on Twitter and I Tweet (which I am finally not embarrassed to actually say). Rachel is jumping for joy on the summit of Mount Garfield, elevation 4,500 feet and number 17 on the 4,000 footer list.
On The Garfield Trail Early Sunday morning Rachel and I jumped in the car. We decided to hike Mount Garfield. The last time we just spent a few minutes on top before a big rain storm hit and we had to quickly leave. This time we hoped to spend an hour enjoying the mountain’s fine vista! I drove to the trailhead and parked. We grabbed our packs and headed up the trail. After hiking about five minutes I looked at Rachel and I asked, “Did you read the trail sign? We’re on the Gale River Trail!” She looked at me blankly. I recognized the trail and I knew I drove to the wrong trailhead. Oops! Back to the car we went and I am embarrassed to confess we paid no attention to at least three trail signs, one was very large too. I entered the Gale River Loop Road on the east end and should have realized my error when I turned left into the parking lot in-
stead of right. Thankfully it is only a few minutes to the Garfield Trailhead. We started out again, this time giggling and feeling a little foolish as we scrambled up the unmistakable embankment that is the beginning of the trail. To reach the Garfield’s summit, elevation 4,500 feet, we will hike 5 miles and climb 3,000 vertical feet. Much of the trail follows the old road to the fire lookout cabin (last year of its operation was 1948). We merrily march along and we easily crossed a couple of brooks by hopping on dry rocks. The trail is moderate nearly all the way and goes on and on through a beautiful forest. When we cross over a ridge and the trail goes downhill for a short distance we know we have traveled nearly 3 miles. Soon we reach the first big switchback and we swing around and climb steadily.
I discover I have put some distance between us. I dug into my pack and find the M&Ms candies. I leave them behind in little piles on rocks for Rachel to find, just like I used to do for her when she was little. After leaving a few treats behind me I catch up to two men. I offer them some candy and tell them I am leaving them to amuse my niece. Gary and Jeff Gorossie are father and son hiking together. I learned that Gary has hiked the 4,000 footers many times, winter too. His son Jeff is still working on the list and today was a new mountain to check off the list. We hiked together until Rachel caught up. We crossed the Garfield Ridge Trail and pressed on for the last 2/10th of a mile of trail that is steep and rocky to the summit’s open ledges and foundation of the fire cabin. Obama’s Interior Department Still Going Rogue

the Carolina Lowcountry, there are few things lower in the esteem of American citizens than the United Nations. by Oliver North While filling the Syndicated Columnist tank of my SUV this morning, I noted the following about the pickup truck at the pump ahead of me: a South Carolina license plate, a U.S. Marine Corps decal, a National Rifle Association decal, a gun rack in the rear window, a sticker reading “Armed Infidel” and another that said “Get US Out of the UN” on it. The owner, it turned out, was a medical doctor on his way to visit a patient. Apparently, down here, doctors still make house calls. Our brief conversation went something like this: Doctor: “You’re Col. North, aren’t you? Me: “I’d better be. I’m using
his credit card.” Doctor: “That’s a pretty Boykin spaniel you have there. Do you hunt her?” Me: “Every chance I get.” Doctor: “You’re on the NRA board, aren’t you?” Me: “Yes. I see you’re a member. Were you in the Marines?” Doctor: “No, my son is. He just got back from Afghanistan. I’m really proud of him, but I want him to get out and finish college before Obama sells us out to the U.N. They’re out to take away our Second Amendment rights. This isn’t about ‘gun rights.’ Guns don’t have rights. We do. ‘We the People’ have rights -- and one of ‘em is the right to keep and bear arms. That’s why I belong to the NRA and why we ought to get out of the U.N.” We parted so he could get to his patient. In the car, I turned on the radio to hear the mellifluous voice of former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan See north on 46
The Obama administration’s loathsome cowboy, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, won’t take no for an answer. by Michelle Malkin H e ’ s b e e n Syndicated Columnist smacked down repeatedly by federal courts for imposing a draconian, junk science-based moratorium on the oil and gas industry. Yet, the job-killing zealot and his boss just introduced another ruinous offshore drilling ban two weeks ago. The White House rationale for the renewed crackdown? Because we said so. Thomas Pyle of the D.C.based Institute for Energy Research reports that the Salazar scheme “reinstitutes a 30-year moratorium on offshore energy exploration that will keep our most promising resources locked away until long after President Obama begins plans for his presidential library.” Instead of working to enhance our energy independence and free up abundant natural resources, the Obama administration has worked tirelessly to close off access to nearly 86 billion barrels of oil on America’s Outer Continental Shelf alone. The latest plan involves the interior secretary’s authority to auction oil and gas leases and to oversee oil and gas research and exploration on the OCS. Pyle explains that the “2012-17 plan leaves out the entire Atlantic and Pacific coasts and the vast majority of OCS areas off Alaska. It cuts in half the average number of lease sales per year, requires higher minimum
bids and shorter lease periods, and dramatically reduces lease terms.” The official Obama for America slogan may be “Forward,” but the Salazar-Obama anti-drilling regime leaves America behind. National Ocean Industries Association President Randall B. Luthi told the Oil and Gas Journal (an industry publication): “This deeply disappointing ‘no new access’ plan does not reflect the comprehensive, ‘all of the above’ energy policy touted by the administration, nor does it keep pace with the energy policies of foreign nations that are expanding their offshore access to develop badly needed oil and gas.” No surprise. Salazar is an unrepentant glutton for punishment -- of America’s energy producers. He’s had the unwavering support of President Obama ever since the aftermath of the BP oil spill in 2010, when the administration implemented a radical six-month freeze on America’s entire deepwater drilling industry. Republicans must forcefully counter the campaign fables being spun by Team Obama with the truth about these rogue overlords. When the president’s Chicago flacks boast of their noble commitment to transparency, remember: The overbroad drilling ban was stuffed into a technical safety document in the middle of the night by Obama’s unaccountable green extremists. When White House operatives tout their miraculous economics, remind them: The cost of the original Obama-Salazar edict is an estimated 19,000 jobs and $1.1 billion in lost wages. The new ban takes both coasts off the table and throws Alaska oil and gas sales into

Jobs Versus Net Jobs One of the reasons for the popularity of political rhetoric is that everybody can be right, in terms of their own rhetoric, no matter by Thomas Sowell h o w m u c h Syndicated Columnist the rhetoric of one side contradicts the rhetoric of the other side. President Obama constantly repeats how many millions of jobs have been created during his administration, while his critics constantly repeat how many millions of jobs have been lost during his administration. How can both of them be right -- or, at least, how can they both get away with what they are saying? There are jobs and there are net
jobs. This is true not only today but has been true in years past. Back during the 1980s, when there were huge losses of jobs in the steel industry, the government restricted the importation of foreign steel. It has been estimated that this saved 5,000 jobs in the American steel industry. But of course restriction of competition from lower-priced imported steel made steel more expensive to American producers of products containing steel. Therefore the price of these products rose, making them less in demand at these higher prices, causing losses of sales at home and in the world market. The bottom line is that, while 5,000 jobs were saved in the American steel industry, 26,000 jobs were lost in American industries that produced products made of steel. On net balance, the country lost jobs by restrict-
Budget Insanity Last year, Congress agreed to $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts, unless politicians find other things to cut. They didn’t, of course. So now, by John Stossel with so-called Syndicated Columnist sequestration looming in January, panic has set in. Even the new “fiscally responsible” Republicans vote against cutting Energy Department handouts to companies like Solyndra and subsidies to sugar producers. Many claim that any cut in military spending will weaken America and increase unemployment. It’s another demonstration of the politicians’ addiction to spending — and how we are complicit. “One more infrastructure bill” or “this jobs plan” will jumpstart the economy, and then we’ll kick our spending addiction once and for all. But we don’t stop. For most of American history, government was tiny. But since Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society and the promise that government
would cure poverty, spending has gone up nonstop. This is not sustainable. Progressives say: If you’re so worried about the deficit, raise taxes! But it’s a fantasy to imagine that taxing the rich will solve our deficit problem. If the IRS grabbed 100 percent of income over $1 million, the take would be just $616 billion. That’s only a third of this year’s deficit. It’s the spending, stupid. Even if you could balance the budget by taxing the rich, it wouldn’t be right. Progressives say it’s wrong for the rich to be “given” more money. But money earned belongs to those who earn it, not to government. Lower taxes are not a handout. That’s the moral side of the matter. There’s a practical side, too. Taxes discourage wealth creation. Even if you think — despite all evidence — that government spends money more usefully than people in the private sector, there is a limit to how much government can tax before people work less or flee. Progressives claim a small increase in tax rates won’t stop the See stossel on 40
ing the importation of steel. None of this was peculiar to the steel industry. Restrictions on the importation of sugar are estimated to have cost three times as many jobs in the confection industry as they saved in the sugar industry. The artificially high price of sugar in the United States led some American producers of confections to relocate to Mexico and Canada, where the price of sugar is lower. There is no free lunch in the job market, any more than there is anywhere else. The government can always create particular jobs or save particular jobs, but that does not mean that it is a net creation of jobs or a net saving of jobs. The government can create a million jobs tomorrow, just by hiring that many people. But where does the government get the money to pay those people? From the private economy -which loses the money that the government gains. With less money in the private sector, the loss of jobs there can easily exceed the million jobs created in the government or in industries subsidized by the government. The Obama administration’s creation of “green jobs” has turned out to cost far more money per job than the cost of creating a job in the private sector.
In addition to reducing jobs in the private sector by taking money out of the private sector to pay for government-subsidized jobs, the Obama administration has made businesses reluctant to hire because of the huge uncertainties it has created for businesses as regards the cost of adding employees. With thousands of regulations still being written to implement ObamaCare, no one knows how much this will add to the cost of hiring new employees. In the face of this economic uncertainty, even businesses that have an increased demand for their products can meet that demand by working their existing employees overtime, instead of adding new employees. Many employers hire temporary workers, who are not legally entitled to benefits such as health insurance, and who will therefore not be affected by the cost of ObamaCare. When President Obama boasts of the number of jobs created during his administration, the numbers he cites may be correct, but he doesn’t count the other jobs that were lost during his administration. His critics cite the latter. Both can claim to be right because they are talking about different things. What has been the net effect? See Sowell on 23

Volunteers Still Working to Dismantle Gilford Cat Colony A few years ago the local press shared the concerns of an elderly gentleman in regards to a feral cat population in his neighborhood. The numbers of homeless cats were staggering and though he wanted to help, his fixed income restricted his ability. His pleas for food were met momentarily and then were once again forgotten by all but a scarce few. The numbers grew rapidly as the animals continued to breed. Through the tireless work of Becky Litteer, Karen LaFlamme, Patricia LeRoux and Susan Fountain, the colony has almost been completely dismantled. The task was certainly not easy, nor quick. Each day the cats had to be fed and accounted for. Trappings have been necessary as well as medical treatments and socialization. To offer more perspective, this was not a situation that

“Sidelines” - Me? Last week an email from Heritage Action that read: “Yesterday, I issued you a chalby Niel Young lenge. I have been active through this column (since 1993) and hosting my self-financed radio program (since 1997) with the financial assistance from advertisers, and a handful of personal donations, which were included in my tax return. Knowing this was a form letter it did raise my feathers, this has not been an easy task, but the message of fiscal and social issues will win, if we don’t don’t sit on the sidelines. No one can claim that this American was reluctant to march, or sometimes lead the mission – invited or not! As for me sending money to the “rah, rah” groups of bystanders, it’s not going to happen; too busy writing and raising revenue to continue the cause and election of the RIGHT and deserving candidates for office – who will listen to me once they have attained that office. ******** Dear Barrack Hussein Obama, “dear leader”, allow me to run this by you for the sake of con-
versation, and I know you will not listen, sort of like your reaction when meeting with Cong. Paul Ryan, and other Republicans with a backbone. That is where as an “insider” maybe there was some chance of teaching my colleagues something about being allowed to succeed, or fail, by my own actions. BTW, something you didn’t experience in the Illinois State Senate and your half a term in the US Senate, you were voting “present” many times. That is unless you were voting to “protect partial birth abortion”, an issue you truly believe in. No on the job training for me. You will never believe what happened. Soon after becoming the Honorable member of the House, a member of the House Transportation committee where I might use my magic for the good of the little business person, suddenly, my Lord, I was granted a Certificate of Public Con-
venience and Necessity (RSA 375-a). Much to the dismay of the NH Senate I continued to push for competition in the very industry that I was now part of! I like to think of that as character, you know what I mean, oh, sorry, you wouldn’t be familiar with that concept. More on that later, Barack. BTW,the voters thought enough of my accomplishments, after that first term on city council representing my home ward; the voters across the city elected me Councilor-At- Large – top Republican vote getter, no less. Oh, Barry, do you know what? The business grew to employ 12 people. That is called creating jobs, Barry. No government involved! Talk again, soon. ******** Dear Mitt Romney. How am I to support you and your issues important to me as a fiscal and social conservative if you are truly considering Condi Rice for your vicepresident? When Vice President Joe Biden takes to the stump to tout the “character of his (boss’s) convictions,” make it known: Louisiana federal judge Martin Feldman rebuked the Obama Interior Department for its “determined disregard” for the law. And the stench deepens. In May, the House Natural Resources Committee released e-mails quoting a senior whistleblower who directly contradicted Salazar’s
claim that doctored support for the ban was unintentional. Where is the Interior Department inspector general to look out for taxpayers’ best interests? She’s kneedeep in ethics problems herself. A federal panel that oversees government watchdogs took up a conflict-of-interest complaint against Interior Department Acting Inspector General Mary Kendall this week. USA Today first reported in
May “that Kendall had attended meetings where top Interior officials discussed drafts of a peerreviewed report on deepwater drilling.” Later, she was enlisted to investigate how White House officials cooked up the scientifically manufactured report that resulted from those very meetings. Instead of haranguing GOP opponent Mitt Romney with questions about his offshore bank accounts, this searchand-destroy White House
should start accounting for its offshore drilling obstructionism. Salazar’s reign has been a shady, secretive and rotten deal for America. On Saturday July 9th 2012, the 300th Junior Motor Officer received his badge and ID card at the museum. All candidates who wish to become Junior Motor Officers must first take the pledge to promise not to be a bully, to read every night for a half hour and to always obey their parents. The junior motor officer then is allowed to put on a Motor Officer uniform and have their picture taken on a 1948 Laconia Police Motorcycle. There is also a coloring table for Junior Officers to color sheets with positive police/child images that they can take home. Since we opened our doors in 2011, we are very proud of the 300 young boys and girls who have joined the Junior Motor Officer Corps and decided on their own to

His second album Honky Tonk Stardust Cowboy released in 1972 was inspired by his life on a farm in western Massachusetts. Simply putting a cat into a carrier should be considered an Olympic feat. Now, in addition to caring for their own pets the women have taken on the responsibility of twenty adult cats, some of those being pregnant females that have given to birth to thirty kittens. It is an exhausting task these women have taken on and the work is far from done. Good news travels fast and after nearly completing the rescue of one colony, more phone calls started coming in. There are other people that need help caring for the overwhelming amount of homeless cats in their neighborhoods. There are
those who are able to turn a blind eye to these requests, but Becky, Karen, Patricia and Susan are not people who shrink from the responsibility of any living creature in need. The sad and often ignored fact is that feral cat colonies are the direct result of poor pet care. The refusal of people to spay and neuter their animals leads directly to the over population. It is easy to by angry with the mischievous cat who knocks over your garbage, or to shake your head at the haggard looking tom cat and he strolls by. But as it is with anything in life, your actions can change once you receive the right information. It is certainly not the fault of the animals that they are hungry, cold and unhealthy. cure cancer or ... who knows what? Politicians promise to balance the budget by getting rid of what is wasteful, redundant or unnecessary. There’s plenty of that, but they have promised to eliminate it for years. They cannot. It’s just in the nature of the beast. Centrally planned monopolies do things that are wasteful, redundant and unnecessary. What will bankrupt us first are the wealth transfers to my generation: Medicare and Social Security When FDR started Social Security, most people didn’t even live to age 65. Today, we average 78 — and we baby boomers demand all the cool new stuff that modern medicine invents: an-
ti-cholesterol drugs, hip replacements, etc. And we don’t want to pay for most of it because we’ve been trained by government to assume that we’re entitled to these things for free, or nearly free. We paid into Social Security and Medicare for our entire working lives, and damn it, we’re entitled to get our money back! Few of us realize that most of us get back up to three times what we paid in, that politicians have promised Social Security and Medicare recipients an impossible $46 trillion more than will exist and that our sense of entitlement will ruin America much faster than foreign aid, subsidies for NPR or for-
eign wars ever will. Amazingly, we could grow our way out of debt if Congress simply froze spending at today’s levels. That would balance the budget by 2017. If spending growth were limited to just 2 percent per year, the budget would balance by 2020! But the politicians won’t do even that. It’s depressing writing this. But it’s not hopeless. There are examples of fiscal sanity we can follow — if we have the will.

in the 15-month uprising against the Assad regime. The continuing catastrophe for the people of Syria isn’t likely to end any time soon. At the instigation of Annan’s “working group,” two separate Syrian opposition delegations went to Moscow this week, seeking concessions from the Kremlin on Russia’s backing for Assad. After meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, they left emptyhanded. Russian President Vladimir Putin is committed to retaining Russia’s naval base at Tartus, Syria. Moscow’s toehold in the Mediterranean Sea depends on Assad’s remaining in power. That’s why Russia will continue to use its veto power as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council to block any serious sanctions against the Assad regime. The Syrian civil war is increasingly deadly -and a vivid reminder of what happens when the fate of a nation is placed in the hands of dithering diplomats at the United Nations. Everyone ought to know by now that U.N. bluster about serious “consequences for noncompliance” and utopian talk about a “transitional government in Damascus” are futile. And that’s in keeping with the U.N. track record on everything from stopping Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and the means of delivering them to the disaster in Somalia. These failures go beyond the intransigence of Beijing and Moscow. They also point to the naivete, incompetence and corruption in the “world body,” as the U.N.

It was Annan who promised to “clean up” the U.N. after Fox News exposed rampant fraud and bribery in the socalled oil-for-food program, which helped prop up Saddam Hussein’s brutal regime in Baghdad. Apparently, he missed some. Two months ago, Fox News reported that the United Nations World Intellectual Property Organization shipped sophisticated computer technology to North Korea in violation of U.N.-imposed sanctions. Now it’s apparent that more high-tech computers were shipped by WIPO to Iran. Adding insult to injury, the banned shipments were financed by the United Nations Development Programme -- which gets most of its support from U.S. taxpayers. Last year, the U.S. forked over more than $8 billion to the U.N. -about 25 percent of the organization’s budget. Apparently, that’s not enough. This week, the U.N. told its 193 member countries that “donor nations” will have to increase their “contributions,” and it has suggested “voluntary taxes” on carbon emissions, billionaires and currency transactions. No wonder the doctor who admired my dog wants us to get out of the U.N. Maybe we should start by moving the U.N. out of the U.S. How about Mogadishu?
