From New York To New Hampshire In Just A Few Easy Steps by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Jill had spent summers in her childhood vacationing in Vermont and, even though she had heard of the “Big Lake” in Central New Hampshire, she never had the opportunity to see it since the family was happily ensconced on their own body of water in the Green Mountain State. It was in 2008, visiting

her daughter Megan McCloskey ,who was a student at the University of New Hampshire, that Jill officially fell in love with the Winnipesaukee area. The rest was pretty easy. After convincing Bill that this was the place to be, they began looking for property in the area See edge on 32

“New Hampshire?” Those were the words out of Bill Ricciardi’s mouth when his partner, Jill Weed, told him the place she thought they should move to get away from the ever growing madness of Floral Park, New York, to open their

business “The Edge.” “I knew we were going to move,” said Bill. “But, I always thought it would be south to a warmer climate.” Bill and Jill had been spending the last twentyfour years travelling the craft fair circuit and operating a website “The Edge” selling their popular Tie Dye and Batik Clothing.

Thanks To Five Dover Wasted Resource Councilors To The Editor: To The Editor: About 80 percent of the 9,000 property owners in Dover are on their own. The remaining 20 percent or about 1,800 property owners are on a “Protected Payroll. That is they are relatively immune to reduction of hours, or layoffs and in most cases benefit from periodic step and cost of living increases. The majority of those on the Dover “Protected Payroll in Dover — about 1,000 — are on a school, city or County payroll. The remaining 800 of the 1,800 have the good fortune to be on the bloated payroll of the New Hampshire University system or are on New Hampshire State or Federal government payrolls. The 80 percent of Dover residents in the “Unprotected group have been hurt by the recession and falling employment over the past 4 years. Some are retired and living on fixed incomes and the balance are struggling to make ends meet. It is the 80 percent of Dover Voters who recognize and appreciate the hard work of the 5 elected members of the council who passed the 2014 budget within the limit of the Dover Spending Cap. Our thanks for this responsible hard work go to Eric Spuler of Ward 1, Mike Crago of Ward 3, Catherine Cheney of Ward 5, Mike Weeden of Ward 6 and Karen Weston at large. David Scott Dover, NH.

Our Story

I wanted to write about what was left out of Roberta Baker’s article Love of Ursus Americanus:Black Bears (July 4. 2013 ). First let me start by stating that of the 30+ bears I’ve had close encounters with in the last twelve years I’ve never met one that was aggressive or threatening or destructive. I’m not part of F&G so I can speak freely about information not included in Ms. Baker’s article and rightfully so, for this info has nothing to do with behavior. At least not bear behavior. Back in 2006 the department of F&G ran a rule change over to JLCAR ( Joint Legislative Committee on Administration Rules ) and not thru legislation and FIS: 310.01 The prohibiting the intentional feeding of bears became regulation. This regulation is intended to take aim at Joe citizen not Joe hunter, backed up with a $1000 fine. The slogan “ A Fed Bear is a Dead Bear “ has been used to promote this regulation and is completely out of context. There is no documentation that just feeding bears kills bears. In accordance with RSA 207:3-d, Fis 307.01 and Fis 307.02, Black bear may be taken by the aid and use of bait. Encouraging if not promoting baiting of bears to kill them while imposing a non-hunting regulation is a slap in the face of our citizenry. With liberty and justice for who? For the 2006 thru 2012

This newspaper was first published in 1883 by Mathew H. Calvert as Calvert’s Weirs Times and Tourists’ Gazette and continued until Mr. Calvert’s death in 1902. The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain the patriotic spirit of its predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Cocheco Valley area with the new Cocheco Times. Our newspaper’s masthead and the map of Lake Winnipesaukee in the center spread are elements in today’s paper which are taken from Calvert’s historic publication.

hunting seasons we have lost 1972 bear to baiting, 1167 Males and 804 Females.180 were Lactating Females, 45 were Cubs, 7 Cubs were killed over bait with the use of Guides, 8 Cubs were killed with the use of Hounds. In addition, 328 Cubs and 22 Lactating Females were killed by all cause mortality one of these Cubs was 18 lbs. I’m told that mistakes were made. As far as I’m concerned the biggest mistake is re-issuing of hunting privilege to any ignoramus who would kill mothers and their cubs. The next mistake is having no regulations on hunting ethics or what is being killed. Again the mistake of having the lack of strong leadership in the dept. and a commission who would rather take advise from poachers rather than the Wildlife Division. Finally, the lack of oversight and accountability. F&G answers to no one and if they did it would be the answer they want you to hear. They have been getting away with it for years and have gotten real good at it. In 2012, 1339 free bait permits were issued for bear. This is a minimum estimate, landowners do not need a permit if baiting on their own land, but remember you can’t feed bears on your own land. Almost half of these permits were handed out to non-resident license holders who come from states that have put a ban on baiting years ago. In 2012, 909 out of an esSee mail boat on 16

Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Is The Time Right?

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

August has traditionally been the month, in the past, when I have announced my intentions to run for Governor of New Hampshire under the Flatlander ticket. In 2012, I declared that I would no longer seek that higher office. Of course, like most people who have sought elected positions and then, tearfully, told the world and their supporters that they would never run again under any circumstance, I am rethinking my decision. It seems that the bar for being elected and then having the title of “the honorable whatever” bestowed upon one has been lowered. So low, in fact, that one needs a shovel to find it. Just ask Anthony Weiner and that mayor from San Diego. As you know, politicians and shovels have gone together like bread and butter, since the first caveman promised his next cave neighbor that, if made the head of the tribe, there would be two dinosaurs for every spear. It seems to me that anyone now has a shot to be elected. So why not me, again? I don’t have any political background, never served in the House or Senate or even on a city council, or as a selectman or even on the local parks committee. Still, I do have a pulse and can take a breath so, by all of the examples I see

around me, here at home and around the country, I am as good a candidate as anyone else; even without a sex scandal hanging over my head. Also, competition here in New Hampshire for a run for governor looks bright. Our own governor, newly elected in 2012, ran on one big idea, a casino in the state. She didn’t get one and now you really don’t hear much from her except when she is giving an award to someone or declaring a day or a week to be officially about something or other. It seems like a good time to strike while the iron is lukewarm at best. I don’t have any big plans on what to do to bring more money into the state. I do, though, have plenty of good ideas on things to dedicate days and weeks to, and that is where I will have an advantage in the campaign. It isn’t until people are elected governor that they start to bestow the designation of a day or week dedicated to a person place or thing. I will, as part of my campaign, tell people about these things ahead of time. I will target those cities and towns, organizations, businesses and alike that would most likely not vote for me and promise them things like: “I promise to make the second week of February Nashua week” or “Every April 4th will now be office supply retailer day in the state if New Hampshire” or for the really big voting blocs “June will hereby be declared convenience store clerk month.” The best part of this is that it won’t be empty promises. These are things a governor can do on their own without the pesky interference of the House and Senate.

It can even be done from the comfort of their own homes. Our own governor could do it in her bathrobe, drinking shots of tequila while watching Honey Boo Boo (and I have the pictures to prove it. I just hope I don’t have to use them.) I believe this idea will also be very successful since most people really don’t care about the state of the economy or insignificant things like that, but give them a day, week or a month that had their name on it and they will be eating out of your hands. So, with these new ideas taking shape in my bald head, I am beginning to rethink this whole running for governor thing again. Gone are the days of real ideas and solutions. Now it is all about people caring more about themselves than about their state or their country. We are in a place where most people out on the campaign trail are asking “What can you do for me?” instead of “What can you do for us?” A time where more and more folks only care about what they can squeeze out of the system. With my ideas, the death of personal responsibility and morals on the back burner stuck to the bottom of the pan, this could be my time to shine. How exciting!! ******** Wednesday, August 7th at 7pm I will be at the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum on Rte 3 in the Weirs telling a few of my Flatlander tales. If you are in the area, stop on in, I’d love to meet you. (It’s five bucks but free if you are a member of the museum. All proceeds goes towards their great work.)

Dakota is an 18 year old bay Mustang who arrived with 16 other horses in the fall of 2012, rescued from mud up to their knees. He is still pretty shy (though he does love carrots!); we don’t know what training he may have had. Dakota would love to find someone to work with him and adore him--look at that heart on his forehead. Please call or email for more information, or come on our farm tour, offered every Sunday at 2:30, to meet all our animals.

Feline Fix It Wagon Travels New Hampshire The Rozzie May Animal Alliance welcomes the Feline Fix It Wagon in May 2012. Since that time this state-of-the-art mobile veterinary clinic has been traveling from Concord to Gorham offering the community spay/neuter. In the fist year 1,552 cats were fixed, brought up to date on shots and offered other important services. Thanks to caring businesses throughout the state the Fix It Wagon parks at a variety of locations (Concord, Plymouth, Wakefield, N. Conway, Dover, Gorham), cats arrive between 8-8:30 in the

morning in carriers, they have a physical exam with the doctor of the day and then surgery. The days package includes spay/ neuter surgery, Rabies vaccine, nail trim, Capstar flea pill, and ear cleaning. The animals stay a few hours in recovery and then to return home the same afternoon. Female package is $75, male $60. Clinic schedule and registration is on www.rozziemay.org. Appointments are needed. The Fix It Wagon also has attended special events and sponsored clincis where there is a

real need to help with the overpopulation problem with cats. Think you can get 20-25 cats together for a spay day, give a call 603-447-1373. Rozzie May also offers dog clinics at their home base in Conway. Dog clinics are held every Friday. RMAA has fixed over 5,800 cats and dogs since its inception. Together were are making a huge difference in the numbers of unwanted and homeless animals as well as minimising the strain on animals shelters.

Lots of people have pet dogs. Not many own a pack of dogs. I do‌..a pack of five. Unanimously, my dogs have deemed me their “pack leaderâ€?. This means that they think I rule the roost, or in other words, run the house‌..and they follow my lead with utter adoration! Thus, as you can imagine, bearing the role of “pack leaderâ€? is quite often good for one’s ego‌..but the title lends itself to some curious side effects as well. My husband often refers to me as the pied piper, as I move around the house with a canine trail behind me. Picture this: I’m working at my desk upstairs, when I decide I need a cup of coffee from downstairs. My butt isn’t more than an inch off my chair, when all five dogs sense my barely perceptible

movement and simultaneously spring to all fours. As I descend the stairs, the rumble of the stampede behind me can be heard the next town over. While I add cream and sugar to my coffee, I strategically maneuver around five furry bodies, all splayed at my feet. Moments later, coffee in hand, I ascend back upstairs to my office, the seismic-like activity resuming until we are resettled in the tiny 6’x9’ foot space around my desk. God forbid I decide to go for a cookie or a piece of cake‌.. the dogs will follow me tirelessly, as many times as I climb up and down. While this phenomenon is humorous at first, its entertainment value quickly fades after the second or third trip. As pack leader, waking up in the morning is a real treat‌..no need for an alarm clock! All I have to do is think about

stirring, and my psychic puppies are quick to respond. I’ve learned the hard way to lay face down so my alpha female, Bella, can’t pounce directly on my belly. As Bella crushes me, my beagle, named “Bagel, competes for my attention from the foot of the bed. Since these two don’t like each other, I struggle to pat both, while simultaneously keeping them apart. From The State House Granite State Future Is NOT the Future You Thought… This is the fourth installment of our series regarding Granite State Future (GSF). As an elected representative, I am absoluteby Rep. Jane ly terrified this Cormier Belknap District 8 gorged tick of a FEDERAL program, Granite State Future, has NO OVERSIGHT by WE, THE PEOPLE. In truth, the advice given by the RPCs has the same effect as being law. The Regional Planning Commissions (RPCs) are NOT an advisory-only commission as they claim. The RPCs deflect all citizen’s criticism by saying the RSAs (the laws) mandate that they are “advisory only”.

But, the fact is towns and cities routinely take the RPCs advice because towns/cities don’t have the resources to do their own planning. Grant money is used as a carrot but when you take the carrot, there are MANDATORY outcomes on the agreements. This is clearly, NOT advisory. Our private properties rights are at risk, there is no doubt about that. The Lakes Regional Planning Commission received 66% of its revenue directly from the Federal Government in 2012. (Now don’t forget, that money is YOUR federal tax dollars!) 15% came from contracts with other local cities and towns – and most of those monies are probably Federal grant money as well. This money comes with strings attached. See cormier on 21

Nancy Pelosi, Creep Enabler The most powerful female Democrat on Capitol Hill has turned her back on women. Again. House Minority Leader by Michelle Malkin Nancy Pelosi, Syndicated Columnist entrenched 13-term incumbent, refuses to say whether creepster San Diego Mayor Bob Filner should resign amid an avalanche of longstanding sexual harassment allegations, staff resignations and now a lawsuit. “What goes on in San Diego is up to the people of San Diego. I’m not here to make any judgments,” declared the very same feminist crusader who has spearheaded unabashedly judgmental nationwide attacks on the so-called “Republican War on Women.” Democrat Filner’s former spokeswoman revealed Monday that he ordered her to “work without her panties on” and viewed women “as sexual objects or stupid idiots.” Other women alleged that Democrat Filner groped, forcibly kissed and harassed them. His own fiancee broke up with him two weeks ago after taking stock of his “abusiveness” and “disrespect” for women. Filner “apologized” and admitted, “I need help,” but he refuses to step down. The sheriff’s office has set up a Bob Filner Abuse Hotline, and the mayor is now forbidden from meeting with women behind closed doors. At least one legal expert believes some of the claims rise to the level of

sexual assault. Instead of anger toward her misogynistic Democratic colleague, Pelosi got all hot and bothered at a journalist who asked her last week about the former 10-term California congressman -- with whom she co-founded the Congressional Progressive Caucus, by the way. “Don’t identify him as my former colleague,” Pelosi snippy-snapped. Okey-dokey. Let’s just refer to boorish Bob Filner as the latest beneficiary of Pelosi’s Democratic Male Perv Protection Racket. When it comes to holding scandal-plagued predatory liberal men accountable for their scummy behavior, See No Evil Nancy’s pattern of malign neglect is unrivaled. In a New York non-shocker of the year, another of Pelosi’s former colleagues, Anthony Weiner, is embroiled in a new sex controversy. Weiner admitted Tuesday that transcripts of lewd sex chats between him and a 22-year-old woman in 2011 -- leaked on a gossip site called “The Dirty” -- are real. His apparent nom de sext: “Carlos Danger.” Vocal Democratic women were nowhere to be found. No surprise. Remember: When the original Weiner nude Twitter selfie scandal broke, Pelosi and her femme-a-gogue twin Debbie Wasserman Schultz dragged their Beltway heels as long as possible. Not until Weiner’s interactions with an underage girl in Delaware were exposed by conservative bloggers and confirmed by police did the women call for him to resign. Pelosi’s soft-on-Dem skeeviness policy extended to Oregon

U.S. Challenged by China in Global Poll UNITED NATIONS—Perceptions often govern attitudes. Indeed the image of the United States worldwide is increasingly by John J. Metzler c h a l l e n g e d Syndicated Columnist by China in a number of key areas as Beijing asserts itself as on the international stage as an economic and political player. This shifting balance of power towards the People’s Republic of China, or at least the perception, is especially pronounced in Africa and Latin America and significantly even among Americans. Globally while the U.S. holds a 63 percent favorability rating and 30 percent unfavorable, the PRC now has a 50 percent favorability standing with 36 percent unfavorable. Yet regionally, China holds a 72 percent favorability rating in Africa, 58 percent in Latin America and Asia, but has slipped to 43 percent in Europe and 37 percent in the USA. Those are among the conclusions in a new poll taken by the Pew Research Center, a nonpartisan group who surveyed 38,000 people in 39 countries to take the global pulse of attitudes to both the USA and to the People’s Republic of China. Much of the survey reflects global attitudes towards China’s economic and commercial rise, as respondents are split over whether the PRC shall replace the USA as the world’s leading superpower. Whether China will “replace the U.S. as the leading superpower,” the results are evenly split with 33 percent saying China will “eventually” replace the U.S., 33 percent asserting “never” and 13 percent claiming the PRC “already has. Dangerously on the political front, mutual distrust between citizens of the USA and Mainland China has grown during the Obama presidency. As mentioned 37 percent of Americans view the PRC favorably (down from 51 percent two years ago) whereas 40 percent of Chinese see America positively. In 2010 after a visit to China by President Obama, 58 percent of Chinese held a favorable view of the USA. Fewer than a third of Chinese see their relationship with America as “cooperative” a precipitous slip from 68 percent a few years ago. Trade

tensions as well as military and human rights issues are reflected in these views. Countries in China’s geographic neighborhood view the Mainland with increasing trepidation. Overwhelming numbers of Japanese 96 percent, and South Koreans 91 percent, and strong majorities of Australians 71 percent and Filipinos 68 percent view China’s expanding military capabilities as negative. Conversely almost two-thirds of Pakistanis see China’s military as positive. Regional territorial disputes score significant concerns; the Diaoyutai/ Senkaku islands and contested atolls in the Spratley Islands among them. According to the Pew poll, “Strong majorities in the Philippines (90%), Japan (82%), South Korea (77%), and Indonesia (62%) think that such territorial disputes with China are a big problem for their country.” As a counterweight to the geopolitical focus, there are undeniable inroads of Chinese “soft power” as viewed by science and technology. According to PEW, “China’s greatest global asset in the future may be its appeal among young adults around the world…young people are significantly more likely than older people to look favorably on China.” This is evidenced everywhere, even in the USA where 57 percent of those aged between 18 and 29 have a positive opinion of China, as compared with just 27 percent among people 50 or older. Naturally this reflects perceptions. Think for a moment that this group view towards China is governed by images of “economic change, Markets over Marxism, Chinese exports, “ Thus the template for the younger generation is largely a mercantile product of China’s post-1978 reforms. The Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989 is largely forgotten. Those young people are focused on the New China, with the occasional hiccup of trade and human rights frictions. Conversely, the older generation certainly knows of China’s impressive economic reforms also recalls communist China’s dictatorship with its communes, labor camps, censorship, Cultural Revolution and the cult of Mao. This historic context contrasts with Beijing’s new socio/economic narrative. Importantly there’s still global unease over the PRC’s human rights

practices. According to Pew, “One of the major challenges for China’s global image is that few believe the Chinese government respects the personal freedoms of its people.” Such sentiments are refuted by the 56 percent of Chinese who claim their country should be more respected.

Indeed, but Beijing must earn that respect too. John J. Metzler is a UN correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. The author of Transatlantic Divide USA/Euroland Rift? (University Press, 2010).

Random Thoughts R a n d o m thoughts from wise thinkers: “We shall not grow wiser before we learn that much that we have done was very foolish.” (F.A. by Thomas Sowell Hayek) Syndicated Columnist “Many respectable writers agree that if a man reasonably believes that he is in immediate danger of death or grievous bodily harm from his assailant he may stand his ground and that if he kills him he has not exceeded the bounds of lawful self-defense. That has been the decision of this court.” (Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Brown v. United States, 1921) “Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our

passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.” (John Adams) “A human group transforms itself into a crowd when it suddenly responds to a suggestion rather than to reasoning, to an image rather than an idea, to an affirmation rather than to proof, to the repetition of a phrase rather than to arguments, to prestige rather than to competence.” (JeanFrancois Revel) “The first thing a man will do for his ideals is lie.” (J.A. Schumpeter) “Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don’t mean to do harm -- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.” (T.S. Eliot) “The study of human institutions is always a search for the most

becoming vertical. I’ve found if I want to sleep in, I must lay completely motionless, even mummy-like, or else endure the consequences. Once I’m up, it’s hard not to feel flattered by the dogs’ sheer exuberance at being around….. well….. me! I often wonder if this is how movie stars feel when confronted with their fans…. While being pack leader is obviously great for one’s self-confidence, it does have some down sides as well….the most obvious being a complete lack of privacy! Even going to the restroom requires careful

planning if I’m to avoid five sets of eyes…. and worse, noses…. trying to investigate my powder room activities. You may ask why I don’t just close the door to keep them out……that would work great….. if one of my pack didn’t know how to turn door knobs! I’ve found it best to coordinate my own pit stops inside, with pit stops for the leg-lifters outdoors. That way, there are two door knobs between me and them, which at least buys me a little more time. Dogs are great at laying guilt trips on their pack leader for any time spent away from them,

no matter how legitimate the reason. When I pull my black work uniform from the closet, all five of my pooches dramatically slouch, tuck their tails between their legs, and quite literally pout, while I get ready to leave. On work days, instead of following me all over the house, they throw themselves to the floor with resounding thumps of resignation and loud sighs of despair, as if proclaiming that the day will be as black as my uniform itself. They never fail to make me feel guilty as I drive off to earn more money to feed them. But this behavior is in stark contrast to the days

I put on my blue jeans and colored T-shirts that make up my farm wear. The minute I begin to adorn myself with these garments, the dogs create a frenzy of excited activity that includes much leaping, bouncing and barking. They act like school children who’ve just been told they’re taking a trip to Disney World! The difference being, that my dogs perform this exact same ruckus of craziness, every single day that I don’t put on my black uniform. My completely scientific assessment is that dogs are not color-blind, as we’ve all been told, but in fact, recognize col-

ors better than you and I. And believe me when I tell you that, at least my dogs, don’t like black! It is a rare day, indeed, that my canine subjects challenge my authority. They are all quite eager to comply with my commands of “Sit”, “Stay”, “Come”, “Paw”, and “Give me a Kiss”, and they do it with a smile on their snouts. (We are currently working on more intricate commands such as “Vacuum the Floor” and “Wash the Dishes”, but more on our progress with that later). So, although living with a pack has its challenges, I need to reiterate that there is nothing quite like it for stroking one’s self-image, what with the endless, unconditional love and devotion that the pack bestows upon its humble leader. Now if only I could get my husband and teenagers to deem me at the top of their pecking order……

DELI & TAKE OUT

Don Devine, Impressive, Buy the Book! Last Friday during Advocates radio one of the callers expressed her frustration with what is the by Niel Young apparent Advocates Columnist lack of Testicular Apparatus with Joe GOP and the Republican Party. It’s been near epidemic proportions since 1988. Too many men and women lack principles, courage, values, and the will to win for America. Now it is time for those of us who love our country to step forward and say NO, the plan for the eventual death of our great country ends NOW. We will sit by while the rulers and takers mismanage our affairs. Sad that what could be a great political party chose to be one of the gang. Never show anger, never speak loudly, and if you may be important enough to hang out with Chuck Schumer, Harry Reid, John McCain, Lindsay Graham, and Marco Rubio, and Kelly Ayotte. ******** From Politico: “Throughout our history, Islam has contributed to the character of our country, and Muslim-Americans, and their good works, have helped to build our nation and we’ve seen the results. We’ve seen those results in generations of Muslim immigrants - farmers and factory workers, helping to lay the railroads and build our cities, President Obama said at a dinner celebrating Ramadan on Thursday at the White House. This is the fifth such dinner that President Obama has hosted. “Every day, Muslim Americans are helping to shape the way that we think and the way that we

work and the way that we do business. And that’s the spirit that we celebrate tonight - the dreamers, the creators whose ideas are pioneering new industries, creating new jobs and unleashing new opportunities for all of us,â€? Obama also said. ******** The freedom of expression has arrived in France. What was once a major crime; calling Sarkozy a jerk, will no longer get you jail time. Thanks to The Founding Fathers we have enjoyed that right for hundreds of years – thank the Lord it is available to me! Current French president Francois Hollande is regularly mocked. ******** Ad at Drudge Report: “STAND WITH SENATOR KELLY AYOTTEâ€?. My very first response: Like she did with us re: Amnesty for Illegal Invaders? No thanks I stand with principled men of courage like Senators Mike Lee and Ted Cruz. They understand the rule of law. ******** Headline: “Internet Sources: Gove r n m e n t Agencies Demanding Passwordsâ€?. Still trust Barack Hussein Obama? Did you see this at Drudge Report last Friday? Christie calls Rand Paul ‘dangerous’ – Warns of ‘rising strand of libertarianism’. Hey Slim, did your buddy Barack tell you to say that? ******** Donald Devine: “During his 2008 presidential campaign, Barack Obama promised to “fundamentally transformâ€? America, after the example of his hero FDR. It’s one promise he has kept. “In a mere 4 ½ years, the country we once knew has become all but unrecognizable. A skyrocketing federal debt, a stag-

nate economy, Nationalized health care. Record numbers of Americans on food stamps and disability. Suppression of the conscience rights of Catholic and other religious believers. And, thanks to Obama’s Supreme Court majority, “gay marriage is now the Law of the Land. “How did we get here? More important, how do we find our way back? Donald Devine, author of the new book, America’s Way Back: Reclaiming Freedom, Tradition, and Constitution, has the answers. Professor Devine shows how Obama-style progressivism has so corrupted modern political thinking that it has obscured the secret of America’s success: the U.S. Constitution’s capacity to harmonize the twin ideals of freedom and tradition. Libertarians and traditionalists (or “social conservatives), says Devine, must realize that each needs to be synthesized with the other to escape its own limitations. Devine: “Such a revival will not be easy not when the progressive revolutions of the past century have so obscured the foundational role that freedom and tradition, have played. But it is not impossible. And it must be attempted -- for the stakes are nothing less than the survival of our nation. Mr. Devine was a guest in Hour 3 (wezs.com) in the podcast. ******** NH Union Leader reported last week that a mother of two students at Concord High talking to students and others who entered the school each day. Weirs Times’ Editor / Flatlander Brendan Smith At Lake Winnipesaukee Museum Wednesday, August 7th at 7pm

Weirs Times and Cocheco Times Editor. Brendan Smith, will be at the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum on Wednesday, August 7th at 7pm, to tell some of the adventures he has had over the years in adjusting to life as a Flatlander from Long Island, New York. Brendan has been recounting these humorous tales, as well as other topics pertaining to New Hampshire, in his weekly “F.O.O.L in New Hampshire” column that has appeared in the Weirs Times since 1995. Brendan has recently compiled some of the very best of those early columns in his first book “The Flatlander Chronicles” which will be premiered at the event. “The book is something I have thought about doing for years,” said Smith. “A lot of folks have been asking me to do it so I fi-

nally sat down to the task. It was a lot of fun rereading some of those early stories and I hope people have as much fun reading them, maybe for the first time.” From raking the roof to to buying firewood for the first time to spending a morning at the dump, Brendan will tell some of the many adjustments he learned to make. Copies of “The Flatlander Chronicles” will be available for sale and Brendan will be happy to sign copies. This presentation will be held in the new, renovated, air-conditioned lecture room at the museum.

The presentation is free to members of The Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society and $5 for non-members with all proceeds going to benefit the Historical Society’s ongoing renovations. RSVP’s are suggested to 603-3665950. The Lake Winnipesaukee Museum is located on Rte 3 in The Weirs next door to the Funspot Family Entertainment Center. The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm. For more information visit them on the web at www.lwhs.us.

The U.S. Mail Boat Tonimar The second in the New Hampshire Boat Museum’s summer lecture series will be held Thursday, August 1 at 7pm. The program entitled “The U.S. Mail Boat Tonimar: A Route Tour and What the Shoreline is Today” will be presented by Alton Bay resident Paul Richardson. Following the lecture there will be light refreshments including iced coffee from Seven Suns Coffee and Tea in Wolfeboro. There is no charge to attend the lecture. As a teenager in the 1950’s, Mr. Richardson worked on board the Tonimar and so has a unique perspective to share about this mail boat’s history. The Tonimar was brought to Lake Winnipesaukee in 1941 by Captain Lawrence Beck. The boat delivered mail from Alton Bay to Melvin Village and also carried passengers until 1966. During Mr. Richardson’s presentation, he will show rare never-before-seen c. 1950 film footage taken from the boat as it made its way along the various stops. He will then show photos of what the stops look like today. The New Hampshire Boat Museum is located at 399 Center Street in Wolfeoro. To learn more about the lecture visit the Museum’s website at www.nhbm.org or call the Museum at 569-4554.

Ashland Railroad Station Museum Needs Painting The Ashland Historical Society is raising money to paint the exterior and to make repairs to the Ashland Railroad Station Museum. Last painted fifteen years ago during its restoration, the Station is now in desperate need of repainting. The deteriorating paint gives visitors a poor impression of the Museum, and a fresh coat is needed to protect the building. The Society hopes to raise $5000 for the painting and minor repairs. Donations can be sent to the Ashland Historical Society at PO Box 175, Ashland NH 03217. (Please indicate that the donation is for the Railroad Station.) The Ashland Station was built circa 1869 by the Boston, Concord & Montreal RR, then moved and remodeled in 1891 by the Concord & Montreal RR. It served as the town’s passenger station until the Boston & Maine RR ended regular passenger service in 1959. The following year, it was sold to Joseph Curley, whose widow Vera gave the property to the Ashland Historical Society in 1980. In 1997-98, the building was restored and renovated, thanks to a major federal grant administered by the state and many private donations. The Station opened as a railroad museum in 1999, and is now one of the best preserved late 19th century railroad stations in the state, with a growing collection of railroad artifacts and pictures. The Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad stops at the Museum during its fall foliage excursions.

Moultonborough Grange Hall – Stabilization And Planning

Tuesday-Saturday August 13th-17th For info call Signilar Art Videos @ 603-934-3222 or Teresa Spinner Studio @ 941-504-1966 Sanbornton, NH

Wireless Security System The Moultonborough Heritage Commission will present a program on the history and future of the Moultonborough Grange hall on Monday, August 5th at 7 PM at the Moultonborough Public Library. This program is free and open to the public. A landmark building centrally located in Moultonborough Village, the Grange hall was added to the State Register of Historic Places and included on the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance’s ‘Seven to Save’ list of endangered historic properties in 2012. Cristina Ashjian and Norman Larson, both members of the Moultonborough Heritage Commission, will provide an overview of the Grange hall’s history, review last year’s efforts to save the building, and discuss necessary stabilization work and planning now underway for the future re-use of this building. The Grange hall is significant both for its architecture and for its social history in the community. In 1894, the recently incorporated Moultonborough Grange #197 purchased the property, a former tavern, and made extensive renova-

tions to it during the next decade. By 1903, the building was transformed into a Grange hall with characteristic features, including the large auditorium with raised performance stage upstairs. The property retains a high level of integrity, and evokes the heyday of the Grange movement in the early 1900s. Since the critically unstable structural condition of the Grange hall was discovered in June 2012, the Moultonborough Heritage Commission and the Moultonborough Historical Society, owner of the property since 2006, have partnered to take steps to save this landmark building and plan for its future in Moultonborough Village. The emergency stabilization of the building’s failing roof system was accomplished in October 2012, thanks to private donations and a generous grant from the Bald Peak Community Fund of the NH Charitable Foundation. A building condition assessment and report with preservation guidelines was completed by Bedard Preservation & Restoration LLC in December 2012, funded in part by a grant from the

NH Preservation Alliance, which receives support for its grants program from the NH Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP). As discussed during the Plan NH ‘Community Charrette’ event held in July 2012, the Grange hall is one of a number of vacant or underutilized historic buildings in Moultonborough’s downtown with great potential to contribute to village revitalization. The Grange building now needs permanent stabilization work and a re-use plan so that it can once again play a vital role in the village center. Does the Grange hall have a future in Moultonborough Village? Ideas for the re-use of this landmark property will be solicited via a survey distributed to attendees on August 5th. For more information, see the Moultonborough Heritage Commission webpage at www.moultonboroughnh. gov. The Moultonborough Public Library is located at the intersection of Route 25 and Route 109 north (Holland Street) in Moultonborough Village, 603/4768895.

campaign funds can be made from special interest groups and not on Wildlife matters. The NH Wildlife Federation, well they are one of the special interest groups. The Governor’s office is clueless. No one will listen and none of the before mentioned care. The whole idea of baiting is to draw bears and deer off of posted lands and just another reason why they don’t want you intentional feeding. It’s all about hunter satisfaction and revenue for the dept. not the state. In order to stop baiting in NH, the residents need to be proactive, post your lands, and tell the neanderthal who knocks on your door looking to set up a bait site to get lost. Baiting is not hunting, is not a sport and has no place in NH. I can say this, if you want to feed bears you might as well, chances are there is a bait site set up near you anyway, you will not find any town that baiting is not being used to kill bears in NH. If F&G knocks on your door to enforce FIS: 310.01 tell them to bring documentation of all the bait permits issued, bait sites and bears shot over bait in your area to court with them so the judge has a fairer assessment of the situation. Perhaps you can reserve the right to do what you want on your own property without having to live by F&G’s leave. So what happened to the 29 cubs that the Kilhams have raised from last year? Five went back to VT. where their is no baiting. The rest were dumped by F&G at bait sites around the state. With thousands of bait sites for bear and deer in NH it would be impossible not to. Nothing less than a slap in the face. I’ll finish up with this, out of the 432 bears killed over bait in the 2012, 309 were 3.5 years old or younger. The life expectancy for bears in NH is 3.5 years for males and 4.5 for females. Eric Rottenecker Bristol, NH.

richment activities to support academic and social development. All services at the Pemi Youth Center are provided at no cost to youth or their families. Staff and volunteers provide positive role models and mentors for attendees and lead them in a variety of after school activities including: academic support, mentoring, creative arts, recreational activities, cooking, empowerment groups, drug and alcohol prevention, a science program, community service opportunities, college planning assistance, and more! In addition to these activities, the group prepares a healthy meal daily and 90% of participants eat dinner each week night at the Center. “At Pemi Youth Center, we take a holistic approach to our After School Program, ensuring that we are not only helping students succeed academically, but also socially and emotionally,” said Jessica Dutille, Executive Director for Pemi Youth Center. “Through the building of relationships and participation in activities, our youth attendees develop confidence and self-esteem as well as new interests and skills. This generous support from MVSB will help us continue to provide a high quality after school program to the Greater Plymouth and Grafton County communities. Established in 1999, the Pemi Youth Center provides a safe and welcoming environment where youth can gather after school, on weekends, and during school vacations and can participate in programming that allows them to develop their abilities, talents and interests and makes them feel that they are a valued member of their community. The team at the center is dedicated to engaging youth through adult and peer mentoring, creative arts initiatives, social and recreational interaction, and opportunities for community service. THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, August 1, 2013 cormier from 8

The RPCs are not looking out for the best interests of New Hampshire citizens. They’ve become branch offices for the Federal apparatus of HUD, EPA and DOT. It is clear GSF is a TOP DOWN organization, not a locally-based program as it claims. It is important to note, back in 1969 when the RPCs were first developed in New Hampshire, the authors probably never believed RSA 36 would be hijacked by the Federal Government. They probably thought, and rightfully so, the RPCs would be about New Hampshire. But, like most federal programs, the commissions grew well beyond the boundaries of local governance. The RPCs are a powerful force gone rogue. And it is time to take the control back. So, how do we put the brakes on this menacing train wreck? There may be a couple of ways. Citizens need to contact their elected representatives in the NH House and Senate and DEMAND ELECTED OFFICIALS be in charge of approving ALL Regional Planning Commission Federal grant applications. This ensures YOU, the citizen and voter, will have

a voice in the RPCs. This could go a long way in putting the people back into the driver’s seat here in NH. Another way to stop this train happens in 2014. If citizens of NH rally and vote for CONSERVATIVE candidates who have a track record of loving liberty and our NH Constitution, we could repeal much of this damaging program. That means the Governor’s office, Executive Committee, and the State House. Small government and states’ rights can see us through this debacle that is GSF. We can do this – IF we have the will! Whichever way it happens, it is time for the RPCs to receive serious oversight from YOUR elected officials. Only YOU can make this happen. Contact your representatives/senators today and let them know you want the state of NH in control of your “Granite State Future”. For more truth about Granite State Future, check out www.granitestatefutures.org. “The federal government did not create the states; the states created the federal government.” - Ronald Reagan

advocates from 11

from Religion Foundation heard about the prayers and complained. “Students and community members that are allowed to come on campus and participate in a neutral thing are allowed to express religious viewpoints,” said Matthew Sharp, general counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom. “The students know it’s the mother and her own speech — something that the First Amendment protects — and that it is not the school mandating this woman to do it.” Too bad this mother cannot remove her children from this government indoctrination center. Over time the American students within GICs will be made to accept the Koran, condone Sharia Law, while being taught that America before Hussein Obama was hell. If not wealthy our students cannot escape the jaws of GICs. Remember folks, in time we will be grateful to “Our Dear Leader” for the blessings that flow from him. State government will not allow business people to give a share of their state tax burden to those who would flourish in another educational environment.

Home Design Of The Week-Suncrest

Like its name, the Suncrest is redolent of sunny climes. Think Mediterranean, Florida, or the Southwest. You see it in the bold stucco columns supporting arched openings that frame the front door and two front-facing windows. And you feel it in the spacious, free-flowing family living areas, inside and out. Twelve-foot ceilings amplify the sense of expansiveness in the entry porch, foyer and living room. Echoing the exterior arch, a lofty arched opening links the foyer to the living room. Similar arched openings connect

this large gathering space to two other hallways. A fireplace nestles into See design on 37

Ask The Builder Transforming A Patio Into A Screened-In PorchShape & Size Matter

Dennis Whitcher denniswhitcher.com 603.630.4561

by Tim Carter

Syndicated Columnist

DEAR TIM: I have an existing patio at my home that I’d like to enclose with screening and a roof. The rear wall of my house is irregular, the roof is at different heights and one corner of the patio abuts an octagonal room. It seems impossible to do this job so that it will look good and be functional. How can I achieve the goal of having a nice screenedin porch? --Barry H., Austin, Tex. DEAR BARRY: I looked at the photograph of the rear of your home, and it gave me a headache! You bet it would be tough to enclose that patio and make it look good, but not necessarily for the reason you allude to. You may be surprised at the first thing I looked at in the photo: the shape of your existing patio. I studied it before I even looked at the exterior walls and roof of your home. Guess what? In my opinion, your existing patio slab might not be the optimal shape and size for an ideal outdoor room. You may discover that you can’t easily fit the furniture you want on this screened-in porch when the job is complete. What’s more, I noticed the house roof extends

The windows in this area are shaded by the roof, undoubtedly making those rooms somewhat darker than the others. Adding a screened-in porch with its own roof will make those rooms even more dungeon-like. You can help solve this problem by installing three large skylights in that part of the roof that overhangs the recessed portion of your patio. Years ago, I was faced with a similar situation at one of my jobs. A customer wanted a cozy screened-in porch, but it was very problematic to add it to the existing home. The steep chimney to reach the col between the peaks surprised me because in the socked in conditions I felt we had already climbed down very far. With the tough trail, taking our time and our stopping and going it took a nearly an hour to reach the East peak. Again our views weren’t super. where between the rocks. The grades are moderate and we marched along steadily. The trail nearer the top switchbacks and we covered the 3.2 miles in just under two hours. We were alone on the top and the views were not great. Fluffy clouds floated around and allowed us a few glimpses of the nearby mountains and the valley floor. We didn’t linger long on the summit. We headed down the trail to tag East Osceola; just a mile away but what a mile. The clouds would break and it sure looked far away After hiking about fifteen minutes Sharon and Sarah decided it was high time for a snack. Kathy

very wet rainy viewless adventure we had there last fall. We were twice as fast walking back to Osceloa. On the summit there were a dozen young gals, most wearing tee-shirts sporting their camp’s logo. They were a happy bunch. Each camper was wearing sneakers and appeared to only have carried their lunches in their tiny packs. They didn’t appear to be prepared for much of anything but my guess is that this camp

has been running their campers up Osceola for the last fifty years with no problems 6/17 so good for them! We ate our lunches too and enjoyed the improving vista as the clouds seemed to be slowly disappearing for good. On our descent we met another group of young gals from another camp making their way to the summit. Who knew that Wednesday must be all girls’ summer camps hiking day on Osceola. to. However, check your local zoning regulations to see what’s required. You may discover that connecting the breezeway to the home actually allows you to create a larger detached screened-in porch than you might be able to do otherwise. Here’s the best part. If you decide to create this detached screened structure, you can make it any shape you desire. It can be a square, a rectangle or even an octagonal porch to mimic the octagon on the back of your home. As a matter of fact, an octagon was the shape of the screened porch I built

for my client. It had the perfect amount of space for all the furniture. This porch became a giant lantern that was surrounded by gorgeous landscaping. It was the focal point of the backyard. When you sat in the screened-in porch, you thought you were in your own private wildlife preserve. It was a magical place to read a book, relax or just have a conversation with a friend or soulmate. If you attach your screened-in porch to the house, you don’t always get those benefits. The one wall of the screenedin porch is the house and you simply don’t always get the privacy you want.

Keep in mind as you plan this outdoor room to do so by actually placing the furniture you want where you want it. Frequently, people make errors by guessing the size of the room they hope will work. All too often, the room ends up being cramped and furniture is crammed into the space. You have a golden opportunity to get this right. If you choose to create a free-standing structure, take the time to arrange the furniture in your yard with the proper spacing. Be certain you can move around the furniture easily. Model the placement of the chairs, tables and benches after your existing indoor rooms that you love. You can easily measure the space between pieces of furniture in your home and set up your porch furniture so it’s right. The porch I built for my client had generous 10foot walls and a vaulted ceiling with exposed rafters. We ended up painting the underside of the roof a light color that produced a very warm feeling. If your budget allows, you can install tongue and groove lumber on the underside of the roof rafters for a more finished look. I’d also recommend a ceiling fan in this porch, as well as some soft indirect lighting that bounces light off the vaulted ceiling. Taking the time to think about the lighting and how this space will feel at night or just after sunset will pay huge dividends. Soft lighting is key to creating a highly enjoyable ambiance in this space. Believe me, the bugs will really want to get in there to enjoy it with you! Want free home-improvement information?
