Grover Cleveland Fishing Creel at Barnstormers Auction Sunday, August 26

Artist Teresa Spinner stands among just a few of her paintings in her studio at her Sanbornton Home. Teresa will be displaying her work at an exhibition to be held at Brock Roberts Custom Framing and Art Gallery on 140 Court Street in Laconia. The show will have its grand opening on Thursday and Friday, August 23 & 24th from 5-8pm. brendan smith Photo

Internationally Known Artist Calls New Hampshire Home

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Teresa has done that through her company, Signilar, which produces art teaching DVDs, that take the artist “from the empty canvas to the finished product.” Thousands of these DVDs have been sold all over the world and each one carries the stamp of

New Hampshire to bring the Granite State around the world. Next weekend, Teresa will be bringing her own art to the people of the state she loves so much when she hosts the opening exhibition of her paintings on Thursday and Friday, See spinner on 12

Artist Teresa Spinner has been all over the world but she feels the most at home here in New Hampshire. A native of New Haven, Connecticut, Spinner, who began her art career at a very young

age, is an established artist who works from her expansive studio in her Sanbornton home. “I have been coming to New Hampshire for years before buying a home here in 1992,” said Spinner “and I’ve always wanted to bring New Hampshire to the rest of the world.”

A fishing creel in perfect condition owned and used by President Grover Cleveland will be auctioned to benefit The Barnstormers Theatre in Tamworth on Sunday, August 26. The fishing creel featured at the auction is donated by the President’s granddaughter Marion Cleveland Cohen who resides in Tamworth. “This creel has been in the house as long as I remember,” said Cohen. “My grandfather fished all over the country as it was one of his favorite pastimes.” The creel is a fine example of Native American basketry from the 1880s and has the original cloth and leather straps. President Cleveland’s son Francis (with his wife Alice and friend Ed Goodnow) started The Barnstormers Theatre in the family’s summer hometown of Tamworth in 1931. The theatre thrives today and is the only professional theatre to continue the tradition of eight plays in eight weeks. The Barnstormers Auction takes place at 5 pm, August 26, at The Highland House in Tamworth. Hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be served. Tickets cost $35 at the Box Office, 603-323-8500. www.barnstormerstheatre.org

shire. Well, I can only say that it isn’t easy. As you may or may not know or care, I am once again running under the Flatlander Party ticket. I am the only candidate running for any office under the Flatlander ticket. In fact, I am the only one in the Flatlander Party this year. So, being a party of one, it has been tough in the fundraising department. I have found it humbling to go around and pretty much beg folks for donations. I’ve even asked for loans. After all, if I do become governor I will earn somewhere in the neighborhood of $115,000 a year. Seeing that I would be guaranteed the job for two years, even if I stink at it, I will still end up with $230,000 before taxes. So, if I won, I’d be more than able to pay back those loans. If I lose then I would promise to set up a monthly payment plan. Still, there were no takers. So, I am pretty much left on my own. I have been creative in my campaign planning in order to save a few bucks. I invited some folks to a local restaurant for free snacks to hear me speak. I picked a place that had an all-you-could eat buffet for $12.95. I loaded up a few plates, staked my place at a table that usually would hold a party of eight and waited for people to show up. Unfortunately, I got kicked out before anyone came.

For Ray Burton To The Editor: In this polarizing political climate it is so gratifying to have a man like Councilor Ray Burton representing the interests of the North Country in Concord. I have know Councilor Burton since grade school and have seen how his service has touched innumerable members of his constituency He represents us ALL and his record supports this fact. We can not afford to lose his valuable service at such a critical time. He brings us all together with one voice regardless of your political affiliation. We need more Ray Burtons. Duane Baxter Woodsville, NH.

Supporting Smith To The Editor: I’d like to start this letter by explaining that until now, I have never registered to vote any election. I am 43 years old and have never found anything any party or candidate for office has ever said to be of any value to me or my family. This election cycle I have met a man who has changed all of that. Kevin Smith is running for governor for all the right reasons. Smith has proven to me that he has built the most qualified resume for the job of being governor and has the right experience to implement the reforms he speaks about on the campaign trail. You may agree or disagree with Kevin’s positions, but you can always rest assured that he will take a position one way or the other and that he will listen

Our Story The Weirs Times was first published in 1883 by Mathew H. Calvert. The newspaper, then named Calvert’s Weirs Times and Tourists’ Gazette, was published until Mr. Calvert’s death in 1902. One of the most remarkable features of the publication was a map of Lake Winnipesaukee which occupied the center spread of the paper. Readers will find the same map reprinted on the center pages of this, and every issue. The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain the patriotic spirit of its

to the voters in his decision making process. Honesty, transparency, and clarity are unfortunately not common in politics, but Kevin Smith is a different kind of candidate. He is a true leader with a real, specific plan which he willing and able to discuss with anyone who asks. I encourage those of you who are like me and looking for change from the status quo style politicians to give Kevin Smith your consideration and vote in the primary on September 11th. Steven Smith Keene NH.

Tea Response To The Editor: I want to congratulate Warren Isleib on his cogent, well-researched letter of August 2nd, “Doesn’t Like Tea. However, he left out some important additional facts about what has been occurring during this election cycle: 1.Since most Republicans and Tea Partiers have been busily poisoning our air and water, they have not had time to take any jobs graciously provided to them by Obama and the Democrat Party, causing the unemployment rate to be at 8.3%. 2.Dick Cheney was seen several months ago in Wyoming using a gas-guzzling SUV to tow the Halliburton Hurricane Machine to an unknown location after he had it recalibrated to cause the drought the US is now experiencing. 3.Republicans have persuaded the Chinese to hijack our producers of

predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and vicinity. Locally owned for over 20 years, this publication is devoted to printing the stories of the people and places that make New Hampshire the best place in the world to live. cheap and reliable alternative energy products so that the Obama administration would look bad after providing them millions of dollars in assistance. 4.Tea Partiers have the unmitigated gall to declare that government revenue is really the people’s money when they know full well they didn’t earn that, that they wouldn’t have anything if not for the government. I hope this clarifies for all Democrats that everything is the fault of those mean and ruthless Republican, Tea-Partying Romney supporters, that you’re being held back by them, that you’re not going to be able to vote “Forward because of the overwhelming obstacle of obtaining an ID card. But don’t worry, there’s always Social Security Disability and EBT cards! Brian Begley Wilmot, NH.

Death Panels Questioned To the Editor: Sarah Palin misrepresented the details of the Affordable Care Act and repeated the term “death panels as a purely political attack on the bill. So what, you may say, that’s politics! In fact, her misrepresentation had a serious negative effect: an important benefit for seniors and terminally ill individuals was dropped from the final version. The [original] bill called for Medicare to pay physicians to counsel patients on the benefits of living wills and advanced directives which record their wishes on end of life decisions. Where tested this practice has achieved all the benefits expected. Many terminally ill patients endure a painful, undignified and extremely expensive departure because they cannot communicate their wishes or did not do so prior to becoming ill. Most patients, when asked,

Meet the Real Workers Obama Screwed Over Chutzpah overload in full effect: President Obama’s sleazy superby Michelle Malkin PAC, run by Syndicated Columnist his former White House spokesman Bill Burton, just released an ad accusing GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney of causing the cancer death of a steelworker’s wife. It’s not just a slanderous and false attack. It’s a foolish attempt to camouflage the administration’s massive jobs death toll, politicized pension plundering and Big Labor bailout cronyism. And it will backfire big time because the thousands and thousands of true victims of Obama’s economic wreckage are speaking up and fighting back. Let’s dispense with the “Romney = murderer” meme first. The warped Priorities USA ad features the claims of one Joe Soptic, a former employee at the Kansas City-based GST Steel

plant. The plant went bankrupt years after Bain Capital acquired it. Soptic blames Romney for the loss of his job and health insurance -- and for the subsequent death of his wife a “short time after” the plant’s closure. But Romney stopped working for Bain in 1999. The plant closed in 2001. And Soptic’s wife died in 2006. Oh, and Soptic admitted to CNN on Tuesday afternoon that the family in fact had health insurance at the time of Soptic’s wife’s death. But it’s still all-powerful, time-traveling, omnipresent Darth Romney’s fault. Obama flack turned super-PAC slime-master Burton shrugged off the facts and doubled down on the campaign’s class-warfare bloviation. “Families and individuals had to find new jobs, new sources of health insurance and a way to make up for the pensions they lost,” he told Politico. “Mitt Romney has had an enduring impact on the lives of thousands of men and women,

and for many of them, that impact has been devastating.” Yet, the Soptic story is the best they could scrape together? Stamp this one “EPIC FAIL.” While Team Obama promotes fables to indict Romney, the incontrovertible stories of the current administration’s economic malpractice are finally getting out. In 2010, I first reported on how Obama’s UAW bailout threw tens of thousands of nonunion autoworkers under the bus. It’s the ongoing horror story of some 20,000 white-collar workers at Delphi, a leading auto parts company spun off from GM a decade ago. As Washington rushed to nationalize the U.S. auto industry with $80 billion in taxpayer “rescue” funds and avoid contested court termination proceedings, the White House auto team and the Treasury Department schemed with Big Labor bosses to preserve UAW members’ costly pension funds by shafting their nonunion counterparts. In addition, the nonunion pensioners lost all of their health and life insurance benefits. The abused workers -- most from hard-hit northeast Ohio, Michigan and neighboring states -- had devoted decades of their lives as secretaries, technicians, engineers and sales employees at Delphi/GM. Some workers have watched up to 70 percent of their pensions vanish. “I worked for 34 years at GM/ Delphi Corp. When Delphi went bankrupt, we lost everything,” Dana Strickland of Michigan wrote me. “Because I was salaried (middle management), we lost our pension and health insurance. I did not belong to the union, so GM/Delphi could have cared less. I have never felt so betrayed. We never hear this brought to the public’s attention. People need to know how we

were screwed, while the Obama administration kissed up to the union. “I’m one of the Delphi Salaried Retirees that lost the health care, life insurance and 67 percent of the pension I was promised in retirement after working hard for 40 years,” Charles Stone of Michigan e-mailed. “Words cannot describe the frustration and let down these events have thrust on my family’s lives, and to have GM’s rescue all sugar-coated in the current political environment is like putting lipstick on a pig. ... We will continue to fight to right this grievous wrong.” Tom Rose of Ohio added: “I am one of the 20,000 salaried retirees that lost all of my health care and -- in my case -- a 40 percent pension cut. So I am now paying increased health care costs with fewer pension dollars and contributing what is left to our lawsuit to correct this injustice. Meanwhile, the politically connected union has their full pension and 90-plus percent of their health care. You have hit upon the key question: How can our own federal government pick winners and losers amongst its own citizens?” Through two costly years of litigation and investigation, the Delphi workers have exposed how the stacked White House Auto Task Force schemed with union bosses to “cherry pick” (one Obama official’s own words) which financial obligations the new Government Motors company would assume and which they would abandon based on their political expedience. Obama’s own former auto czar Steve Rattner admitted in his recent memoir that “attacking the union’s sacred cow” could “jeopardize” the auto bailout deal. In June, 20 months after a federal judge first ordered the govSee malkin on 36

Midsummer Madness WASHINGTON -According to the pollsters and the so-called mainstream media, as of the dead of summer, the presidential contest between Barack by Oliver North Syndicated Columnist Obama and Mitt Romney is a dead heat. We also are told this race is all about the “economy” or “jobs” or “middle-class taxes” or “repealing Obamacare.” Or not. Supposedly, we’re turned off by negative campaign ads, but we also want to know whether Romney really caused the death of an unemployed woman a half-dozen years ago -- as alleged by a Democratic super PAC commercial. And of course, we all are looking forward to poring over every tax return ever filed by Romney and the hidden papers, test scores and college transcripts of young Obama. Or not. It’s now less than three months until our presidential election. With the closing of the London Summer Olympics, we are told by the potentates of the press that the American people will soon stop counting medals and debating which team is better, the 1992 “Dream Team” or the 2012 USA basketball team. In theory, that means that next week, we will abruptly shift focus to hiring a chief executive, head of state and commander in chief. Or not. With the U.S. unemployment rate still higher than 8 percent and stagnant job growth, one might expect our media to begin a conversation about which candidate offers the best course of action for our economy. Don’t count on it. Next week, the pollsters and pundits are likelier to focus on the Republican vice presidential selection. Meanwhile, crucial national security issues that will be determined in less than 12 weeks are mentioned rarely by the candidates and by those covering their campaigns. All we really know for sure about Obama’s national security policy is that he likes to “lead from behind,” that “he killed Osama bin Laden” and that his administration

Sports Versus Politics of government never even reach the point of looking for empirical evidence. Today, for example, there is much gnashing of teeth in the media because Democrats and Republicans can’t seem to get together to create a bipartisan plan for government intervention to solve our current economic problems. Those who cry out that the government should “do something” never even ask for data on what has actually happened when the government did something, compared to what actually happened when the government did nothing. That could be a very enlightening trip through the archives. Sports statistics are kept in a much more rational way than statistics about political issues. Have you ever seen statistics on what percentage of the home runs over the years have been hit by batters hitting in the .320s versus batters hitting in the .280s or the .340s? Not very likely. Such statistics would make no sense, because different batters are in these brackets from one year to the next. You wouldn’t be comparing people, you would be comparing abstractions and mistaking those abstractions for people. But, in politics and in commentaries on political issues, people talk incessantly about how “the top one percent” of income earners are getting more money or how the “bottom 20 percent” are falling behind. Yet the turnover in income brackets over a decade is at least as great as the turnover in batting average brackets. In the course of a decade, the top 400 income earners include a couple of thousand people. The income received by the top 400 (as a statistical bracket) has risen, both absolutely and as a share of all income, even while See Sowell on 36

It’s Not Personal, It’s Why You Are Running! On August 25, from 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm at Sticks & Stones Farm in B a r n stead, NH by Niel Young House of Advocates Columnist Representative, Guy Comtois and District 8 candidate, Jane Cormier, will host a rally to showcase some local conservative candidates in upcoming elections. Rep. Comtois: “This is a crucial election. Our constituents need opportunities to meet our local conservative candidates.” Sticks and Stones Farm is on 107 White Oak Road in Center Barnstead. This event is free and open to the public. For more information regarding the rally, contact Jane Cormier, 7815695 or Guy Comtois, 776-8989. ************** This is a good time to remind voters that your House members not only go to Concord to consider legislation submitted by other legislators. NH House members pass the state budget for the next two years. They are also the people who establish the amount of money to spend from the county budget (taxpayers). What they spend directly affects your town and city/ school budgets. Keep an eye on them. And we do need to change the balance of power. At the Belknap County GOP meeting I submitted this question for Rep. Elaine Swinford and Rep. Comtois who are in a primary in Barnstead. Question: How did you vote re: the county budget and why? Elaine said she did vote

yes, and mentioned the “other group” was wrong in not supporting the budget plan. So, does she see the conservative members of the delegation as a group of what? I personally have differed with some of her votes in the House including the override of Gay Marriage, she proudly voted to sustain John Lynch’s veto. Vote for Guy Comtois on September 11.

more immigrants into the USA, and his 11th Commandment. Staying clear of attacks about one’s personal life is right. Pointing out the differences between how candidates recognize the problem, the solution, and if our fellow Americans agree, is a discussion that must be had – before the primary election! Don’t you agree?

************** Due to re-districting there is a primary for the one state representative in the towns of Alton, Barnstead, and Gilmanton. Jane Cormier of Alton, A true conservative; Family, Freedom, and Fiscal Responsibility, and she is a small business owner. It is easy to suggest you vote for Jane, a true conservative Republican. Her challenger rubbed me the wrong way two years ago when at an event in Barnstead he was quick to explain his desire to work with the Democrats in the House. Peter Bolster has been terrible for voting against the values of this District. He has voted against the Belknap County taxpayers by supporting higher budgets, and gets a rating of “RINO” from me.

******************* Candidate Josh Youseff has clearly stated his positions on the issues most likely important to the voters, who are looking for someone to defend their positions. It was a great opportunity for candidate Bill Grimm to pick up some support. Unfortunately he was not strong on his positions. Speaking for Josh I said that Josh opposes Northern Pass re: Eminent Domain, Josh has pledged to oppose a sales or income tax, will vote for Right To Work, believes in the 2nd Amendment, Josh is also a proponent of putting the free market into education, to give our students the best education possible without gouging our tax payers. To view the exchange between Grimm and myself to allow you to study Bill’s responses visit: http:// www.joshfornh.com/category/video/ This Saturday candidates for office will begin taking advantage of airtime and discussion of their positions in many areas as the primary nears.

*********** I was asked by Republican Josh Youseff, candidate for Senate District 7, if I would speak for him at the Belknap County GOP “Contested Primary Candidate Forum.” I noted this: “Positive comments only - Reagan Rule – “Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican.” My favorite president since I have been here, was wrong for listening to Tip O’Neil on allowing

A Short Hike and More Fun at Clark’s Trading Post The hot and humid weather and threatening rain kept us off the mountain tops. Rachel and I made a quick decision to go out for a short hike someplace we hadn’t been before. I studied my map and noticed that the Church Pond Loop Trail would be a nice little outing. The loop trail is nearly level, only 2.8 miles long, passes by Church Pond and is really soggy. Perfect for a wet day! The trailhead is located near site 19 in the Passaconaway Campground on the Kancamagus Highway. As soon as we shouldered our packs it began to rain. Onward we marched wearing our rubber Crocs on our feet to cross the Swift River. We waded and the deepest section was just below our knees. In just a few minutes we splashed across a much smaller channel of the river. I took my sneakers out of my pack and put them on my tender feet. Rachel asked if it was okay to continue barefooted, she thought walking on the packed pine needle covered trail was nice. At one third of a mile we reached the end of the trail’s lollypop stick and reached the beginning of the loop. We decided to go left, clockwise, because it would bring us to the Pond more quickly, only 8/10ths of a mile away. The trail continues through wet boggy terrain and Rachel put her Crocs back on her feet. The log bridges are thoroughly rotten and the spikes stick up several inches, just another thing to avoid tripping over. We didn’t care if our feet got wet and muddy. We reached a red pine rooty covered knoll that is a fine perch to look over the Pond. A tent was

We saw two people across the pond wading along the edge of the water. Rachel was certain the pond must be filled with blood suckers (leaches) and wanted none of that. We had a little trouble finding the trail; there were no signs and many blow-downs. We found the worn path and followed it through some muddy pits. We recognized that the trail must be now abandoned but we weren’t the only ones to decide to follow it just the same. The trail really wasn’t in that bad a shape with the exception of several large mucky holes where the log bridges were completely rotten away. We really had fun squishing our way

across. When we came back to the beginning loop we realized that brush had been dragged over the trail and the signage removed to See patenaude on 22

people imagine when they think of an art show. “Art is fun for me, said Teresa, “I want people to have fun when they view it. Teresa first studied with community artists at The Whitney School of Art in New York City at a young age. She later studied sculpture and painting at Bennigton College in Vermont. “I started out with sculpture and my sister started with painting, said Teresa. “Today, she is the sculptor and I am the artist. Teresa has studied painting with faculty of Yale University such as Deane Keller and Pulitzer Prize winner Rudolph Zallinger.

She has also studied with acclaimed portrait artist, Burt Silverman, whose work has appeared around the world. A portrait of Teresa, painted by Silverman, hangs on the wall in the Spinner home. Many other works of art also hang on the wall of the Spinner’s 1700s colonial home but the most impressive display are those in Teresa’s studio where dozens of works, some complete and some in progress, are scattered about wherever space is available. A few paintings are by other artists but mostly they were created by Teresa’s hands and talent. See spinner on 15

Mount Washington Observatory Welcomes New Director Of Summit Operations Mount Washington Observatory will soon be effecting a major changing of the guard, as thirty-three year Observatory veteran Ken Rancourt prepares for retirement in September. The longtime director of the organization’s mountaintop operations will be succeeded by meteorologist Cyrena-Marie BriedÊ of Brighton, Colorado, who began her training with Rancourt this week. Mount Washington Observatory is a private, nonprofit, member-supported research and educational institution with a mission to advance understanding of Earth’s weather and climate. Prior to receiving the grant, they borrowed a more advanced digital camera from a neighboring police department as needed. “Our new camera allows us to be much more flexible and prepared for any situation; we can take a photo in a dark room, capture a close-up photo of a serial number, or photograph an investigation from a distance, said Ashland Police Chief Anthony Randall. “With MVSB’s support, we can better serve the people of Ashland without having to rely on other police departments for assistance. With five full-time officers and two part-timers, the Ashland Police Department serves a year-round community of approximately 2,000 residents with a population increase to more than 2,300 in the summer. The award to the Ashland Police Department is one of 32 grants totaling $78,762 awarded by the MVSB Fund in the most recent grant cycle. The Fund makes grants every year to local non-profits that make a significant impact upon the lives of people in the communities MVSB serves. These grants are in addition to the Bank’s regular contributions and the extraordinary volunteer efforts by its employees. Since its inception in 1997 under the leadership of John Starrett, then president and CEO of the Bank, 216 grants totaling more than $796,000 have been awarded to a wide range of environmental, social, educational, and historic projects throughout the Lakes Region and Plymouth area. GREAT INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY!

Garage Condos

The Summer of 2012 by Pete Grasso Contributing Writer

Yup, it’s been quite a summer, that’s for sure. The early ice out opened the lake for some great early fishing, but the weather was pretty foul for more days than not. Lots of wind & kind of cool. If you could stand all this, the fishing was great. The question was, what will summer bring? For the most part, it was pretty darned good. The fishing was not exactly “Outstanding but it was still within reason. Downriggers appeared to be the primary method as the water warmed up. We took some pretty nice fish during the months of June & into the first part of July. Although we utilized the riggers, we also went to the “Hard baits, spoons, etc. I guess this is “OK as it catches fish but I find that with the treble hooks it’s pretty easy to

damage a fish. My rule, on the boat, is that if the fish is of legal size and bleeding, it’s a kept fish. Normally we adhere to the F & G’s regulations regarding “Catch – Kill or Release,’ but it makes no sense to release a legal fish that is bleeding. That only contributes to the issue of hook injured fish, “IF and that’s a big if, the fish survives. I guess it makes me a bit upset when I hear folks chatting on the VHF about how their day is going and hear that they have taken 10 or 11 fish, which they put back, but one was bleeding all over the boat. I often wonder how many of the others were bleeding as well. Not many, I hope. Unfortunately, these are the same folks that complain if their creel census is low. Releasing an injured, legal fish, should not be done. Come on guys, we’ve got a great fishery out there; let’s do our part to keep it that way. (I know I’m going to get some flak on this, but it is what it is!) Midway through July, we went back to our single hook streamer flies and

have done very, very well, to say the least. We’ve seen a LOT of big fish coming to the boat. They are feeding well and are in GREAT shape. This leads me in two directions. First, I would guess that we will most likely have another outstanding spring session. I don’t believe that there has been an extraordinary amount of pressure on the fish this summer AND with lack of ice last year, there might not have been as much “Winter kill, maintaining a good inventory. Secondly, and I have to go back through my records to verify this, I don’t believe we are going to have a blockbuster September fishery this year. This I attribute to the early (March) ice-out. In 2010 we had a March ice-out and September was the pits. Fish went into pre-spawn cycle & wouldn’t hit a thing. The boat went away early that year. In 2011, we had a more traditional (late April) iceout and the fishing was outstanding right up to See grasso on 26

want to die at home or in a hospice not hooked up to all kinds of machines which could bankrupt the family. (A Harvard study found that 62% of bankruptcies are due to medical expenses). Palin’s sound bite, a political winner, was and is completely untrue and was a loser for terminally ill patients, their families, and

our health care system. Palin, undeterred by the facts is at it again. Now she claims that the concept of best practices sharing is a “death panel”. The panel of doctors and healthcare professionals was created by the bill to identify the best medical practices across the country and publicize them so others can adopt them to prevent errors,

improve care and reduce costs. A win, win, win, win for patients, Medicare, families and society. Let’s hope Palin’s irresponsible demagoguery and rhetoric doesn’t turn a very successful practice, used in business for decades, into a lose, lose, lose, lose.

We’ve already taken some bookings for the spring 2013 season and that’s a good thing. We’ve also had a good season with respect to overall operations & have had NO major issues with boat, motors or equipment. Early in the season, we sent all the downriggers out to Michigan for their annual service and everything was in order,

no major issues. I also changed the water separator filters recently and was very surprised to find only about ½ teaspoonful of water in them. Now THAT’S a good thing. I guess this is a reminder for all of you to do the same……..A little preventive maintenance goes a LONG way on this issue. Later… Capt. Pete

Charlie Strater at Factory Court Brown Bag Concert Friday, August 17th

R O C H E S T E R - Roch ester Main Street will present blues artist Charlie Strater at the August 17 Factory Court Brown Bag Concert in downtown Rochester. Charlie, fresh from the Rochester Blues Festival, is steeping into the Factory Court line-up, replacing Pat O’Brien, who is unable to perform that

day. In case of inclement weather the concerts will move to the Roberge Center, located off Bridge Street, just behind artstream studios and gallery on North Main Street in downtown Rochester.

The O-Team has slow-rolled delivery of counter-narcotics aid to these countries, refused to improve security on our southern border and initiated the infamous Operation Fast and Furious, which allowed firearms to be exported illegally to drug cartels.

What would President Romney do differently? The midsummer madness is almost over. Is it too much to hope that the matters above will rise in importance? Probably. As The Daily Caller reported on Tuesday, the documents included “internal government emails (that contradicted) sworn testimony, in federal court

the average income of the average person who was in that bracket at a given time has fallen by large amounts. How can this be? The short answer is turnover. Turnover in sports creates no such confusion. If players A, B and C all have batting averages in the .320s this year and, put together, they hit 100 home runs, while players X, Y and Z all have batting averages in the .320s next year, and together they hit 120 home runs, we could

and before Congress, given by several Obama administration figures. They also indicate that the administration misled lawmakers and the courts ... and that administration figures violated federal law.” Meanwhile, the Delphi workers who got shafted are getting in the faces of the administration and the public with a new web ad produced by conservative advocacy group

say that .320s hitters were increasing the number of home runs they hit. But A, B and C could easily be hitting less than 100 home runs next year. It all depends on whether you are talking about what is happening in statistical brackets or what is happening to actual fleshand-blood individuals who were in those brackets at one time but not another time. We understand that when we talk about sports statistics. But not when we talk about statistics on political issues like in-

come differences. Do our IQs just drop spontaneously when we turn to politics? Or are there many people in politics and the media with vested interests in misstating issues, and lots of experience in doing so? I think it is the latter, especially during an election year.

Salome’s Stars Horoscope ARIES (March 21 to April 19) As eager as you are to take on that new challenge, it would be best to temper that spurt of “Ram”-bunctious energy until you have more facts to back up your decision to move. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This is a good time for hardworking Bovines to take a break from their hectic on-the-job schedules to bask in the unconditional love and support of friends and family. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Pay attention to what you hear in the workplace. You could pick up some hints about possible changes. Meanwhile, a new infusion of creative energy sets in by week’s end. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Try to be more flexible in dealing with a suddenly difficult situation, whether it’s on the job or in the home. Others might have some good points to offer. Blues Traveler National Tour at The Flying Monkey — Wednesday, August 22nd —

The Flying Monkey Performance Center in Plymouth is excited to present Blues Traveler on Thursday, August 22nd. Known for their epic sets and dynamic live performances, Blues Traveler is coming into a small town abuzz with anticipation, and is sure to leave fans wanting for more. Tickets for this concert start at $49. Blues Traveler was formed in Princeton 25 years ago. The original band consisted of John Popper, Chan Kinchla, Brendan Hill and Bobby Sheehan. High school friends, they grew a passionate regional following for their sweaty, titanic live shows which often found them jamming endlessly into the night. At the center was the ever quirky Popper with harmonicas strapped to his chest. Kinchla, the Energizer Bunny of guitar players, provided a gritty style that perfectly complimented Popper’s voice and harp. Anchoring it down was the ace rhythm section of Hill and Sheehan (who died in 1999). They quickly became a mainstay on the club circuit, helping ignite a new generation of jam music fans from coast-to-coast in the early 90’s via its beloved H.O.R.D.E. (Hori-

zons of Rock Developing Everywhere) festivals. Opening the show is Remember September, whose acoustic rock sound blends country, rock, jazz and blues, and has been described as The Allman Brothers and the Dave Mathews Band rolled into one. With live performances generating huge amounts of buzz wherever they play, this high energy band finds themselves in a similar position to Blues Traveler, 25 years ago just before they exploded onto the national scene. The Flying Monkey is quickly becoming known as the “best place in NH” to see a show. Go experience dinner and a show with world class artists, state of the art sound and lighting, and unparalleled food and beverage service by the Common Man Family of Restaurants. Tickets for the Blues Traveler Concert are $49, and $59 for premium seats.
