COMPLIMENTARY

For The Love Of Sheep Dogs by Roberta Baker Contributing Writer

Fifteen years ago, Robert Drummond used border collies to chase Canada Geese off the lawns of lavish estates in Greenwich, Connecticut. Today, he uses them to herd 70 cheviot sheep at his farm in Hillsborough, New Hampshire, and to compete in events such as the annual sheep herding trials at the New Hampshire Highland Games in Lincoln.

“I’ve always admired dogs that do a job,” says Drummond. “Whether you’re collecting geese or working on a farm, you’re doing it together. It’s a partnership, a friendship. Deep down, these dogs are your buddies.” Border collies are considered by farmers to be the kings of the herding breeds. Many dog experts proclaim them to be the most intelligent animals in the canine kingdom. Named for See dogs on 30

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

What The Polls Mean

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

A lot of Americans are anxiously awaiting Election Day. I’m pretty sure that anyone who actually votes has already made up their mind. So, we sit and wait and wait. Waiting for elections can be boring; that’s why polling was invented. Polling is the process where a group of people go around with clipboards or sit at desks with telephones and ask a couple of people their opinions about issue or candidates. Then the polls are released and looked at by everyone else who was never asked about the issues or candidates. This is about 99.9 percent of the population (give or take a percent). It helps them understand what that tenth of a percent is feeling about an issue or who they are going to vote for in an election. Even though, no one you know, or will ever know, has ever actually been asked either of these things. According to one of these polls I saw; most people believe that these polls are accurate. Of course, you might be disheartened when you look at a poll when you find out that most of the people, according to that poll, don’t agree with you. This is when you search out another poll. You see, there are hundreds of these polls where hardly anyone was asked

what they felt or who they were going to vote for. Within these hundreds of polls, you are guaranteed to find at least a couple that align with your way of thinking. These are the polls you will come to trust. Take for example this upcoming Presidential election. If you look online you can find dozens of polls that give different answers. One guy is up by ten, in another he’s up by just one. Another poll has both candidates tied and another has the other guy winning. If you try to follow all of the polls you’ll drive yourself nuts. Do what I do; just find the poll everyday that best aligns with your thoughts and take that one as the correct poll. This may seem very unscientific, but it is the same process used by the news media, so you know it must be true. In fact, the media uses polls this way all the time and if they can’t find a poll that doesn’t agree with their unbiased (wink) way of reporting, they will come up with their own poll and keep talking to people till they get the poll exactly as they want it. This is otherwise known in the polling business as a “scientific random sampling”. During a big election like this one, the poll numbers change daily. Whenever a candidate opens his mouth, even if it is just to yawn, a new poll must be taken to get a feel for what all those people you have never met, and never will meet, think about this. To keep the polls interesting, they will often key in on smaller groups of society to find out where they stand. These are called “focus groups.” For example: “Single women over forty who still look like they are in their thirties and earn

over $50,000 a year after taxes” might be a focus group. Also “People who don’t consider themselves part of a focus group” could be another. The possibilities are endless. If you can’t get enough of just looking at polls, you can always turn on the television and listen to people who will tell you what the polls mean. They will explain that the candidate who has lower poll numbers is losing and the candidates with higher numbers are winning. These people are known as “poll experts”. When Election Day finally comes, the pollsters find themselves close to being out of work for awhile, so they hang in for one more paycheck by conducting exit polls. They select a random group of people who just voted, usually people with nothing else to do that day, and they ask them who they voted for. Using this highly scientific method, the pollsters will usually know who won the election a little bit before 9am on Election Day. These results will be sent to the television stations who will, based on two percent of the votes cast, be able to correctly “call” the election before lunchtime. This is very important in the election process because the sooner we can finally have a winner in the election, the sooner the pollsters can get to work taking polls to find out who those people you will never meet think would be good candidates for the next election. Vote Senator Jeanie Forrester To The Editor: Two years ago I supported Jeanie Forrester for District 2 State Senator and I must confess it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. Senator Forrester has been one of the best constituent representative’s we have had and she truly serves all the people in District 2. She is hard working and a well respected leader in Concord and serves on the important Senate Finance Committee and is Vice Chair of the Public & Municipal Affairs Committee. The Senator also serves on many other important Commissions, Committees and Boards. One of those boards is the Current Use Advisory Board (CUAB) where she has spent a great deal of time learning how important Current Use is to the Forest Industry, as well as to Ag and Forest Landowners in District 2. She also recognizes that this has a positive impact on recreation activities such as hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. She has worked on many bills over the past two years for New Hamp-

shire citizens. I would like to share two of many that were signed into law: 1). House Bill 648 which protects private property owners from a taking of their land by Eminent Domain. 2). Senate Bill 382 which sets up a procedure for the towns to prorate your tax bill on a home that was destroyed by fire or natural disaster. The NH tax year is April 1st to March 31st. Prior to this bill being passed (Senator Forrester introduced SB 328), if your home was destroyed you still had to pay property taxes until the end of the tax year. Hard to believe that anyone would have to pay taxes on nothing more than a burned out cellar hole but it was happening and Senator Forrester corrected this problem for our citizens. Please join me in voting for “Good Government” by re-electing Senator Jeanie Forrester on Nov. 6, 2012. Tom Thomson Orford, NH.

Our Story The Weirs Times was first published in 1883 by Mathew H. Calvert. The newspaper, then named Calvert’s Weirs Times and Tourists’ Gazette, was published until Mr. Calvert’s death in 1902. One of the most remarkable features of the publication was a map of Lake Winnipesaukee which occupied the center spread of the paper. Readers will find the same map reprinted on the center pages of this, and every issue. The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain

shared by all Alaskans. Why can’t we leverage our natural resources and find ways to create wealth that can be used to better the lives of all of us? No oil? No problem. We have what Hydro Quebec needs. Partner with Hydro Quebec and bring right of way leasing fees into New Hampshire’s coffers as revenue! I wonder why our legislature can’t come up with a plan to run HQ’s power right down Rt 93: bury it in the breakdown lane. Don’t like this route? Find another one...but don’t just walk away from this golden opportunity! Annual revenue from NH state property taxes is around $80 million a year. Hydro Quebec is willing to spend much more than this; every year for a power corridor through our state. Privately owned overhead lines are the wrong way to go. Burying lines might cost more in the short run but a permanent scar running right through the heart of our beautiful state will ultimately extract much higher costs in the long run; from all of us. Act now before it’s too late! NH State Power Corridor: A win for everyone!

MARINEWORKS What do you want to protect! L L C

by Mal Fuller Contributing Writer

As I mentioned in my last article, life’s been unpleasant living in the nursing home environment of the Genesis Rehab Center here in Keene, New Hampshire. I don’t think such a lifestyle is ever too acceptable to those who have a prospect of leaving. There are two basic categories of inmates here, those with a genuine hope of returning to their homes and those with no realistic hope of doing so. However, the date I am to return to my beloved home in Wolfeboro has already been set. Am I ready? I’m not sure. I’ll need a lot of help. It’s doubtful that I’ll ever be free of needing a walker. Therefore, I plan to employ two walkers, one for outdoor use such as getting to my van at the foot of the ramp and for getting around outside, and one for use inside the house. The ramp is too steep to use a walker on. However, my experimentation has already proven that I can get up and down the ramp using the handrails and my prosthesis. With a walker waiting at both levels I should be able to come and go as needed. A (really) good friend, Jennifer Weiner, who along with her husband Allan, owns and operates WBCQ, the shortwave station I am on every Friday night (even from Genesis Rehab) will be at home with me to help me get set up during my first days. Boy did her offer of help alleviate a lot of anxi-

Here’s a recent photo that Malzy took with his iPad. I’m on my Genesis bed, reading a nice card from one of my Weirs Times readers. A close look at the exposed leg reveals a less than perfectly natural look. That’s because it is a store bought leg! I’m home now, but the battle has only begun. Please see the accompanying article for details, including details on how I got a haircut. ety on my part! She even gave me a much overdue haircut. (See my hair in an accompanying photo.) Yesterday, as I write, as a part of my therapy here at Genesis Rehab, my new leg & I rode the “friendly bus” from Genesis to the Keene Hannaford’s and back. (The friendly bus is a pointto-point, on demand bus available free to Keene citizens age 62 and up). At Hannaford’s I rode one of their battery powered shopping carts about the Hannaford store demonstrating to my therapists my abilities to get merchandise off of high shelves and negotiate the store in general. My prosthesis stayed where it belonged and comfortable. Shortly, I’ll be doing my

preliminary shopping at the Alton Hannaford, to restock my food at home. Today’s dry run leaves me confident that I can do the deed. Malzy was kind enough to meet me at the Keene Hannaford store to see how his old man would do. He got a picture or two, which may or may not accompany this article. (Depending upon how foolish I look.) I’m sure going to find it rough not seeing Malzy on a regular basis. I wish that he, Diablo and I could all live together again! Here at Genesis Rehab Center in Keene, I have had four roommates. Some weren’t my roommates for very long, which, in reflection, probably worked out for the See rambling on 36

Who Is White House Visitor Hisham Altalib?

Advice From the Hindu Kush EN ROUTE TO AFGHANISTAN -- Dear

Gov. Romney, It seems as if every pundit, campaign consultant and professor of political science has been on the air or in by Oliver North print lately, ofSyndicated Columnist fering advice on how you can “jump-start,” “turn around” or “reset” your presidential campaign. Most of them say that your best chance of “regaining momentum” will be during the upcoming presidential debates. Seeing as I will be in Afghanistan keeping company with our American heroes while you’re debating their current commander in chief, this seems like a pretty good time to send you some of what I have heard them say. But first, here’s why this is important to their future and yours: The soldiers, sailors, airmen, guardsmen and Marines I have been covering for Fox News for more than 11 years know that they are engaged in a real war against a brutal, often suicidal enemy. They know this isn’t just an “overseas

contingency operation.” Nearly 3 million young Americans have volunteered for this long fight, and many have served multiple tours of duty in harm’s way. Since Sept. 11, 2001, more than 6,500 of them have been killed in action, and more than 49,000 have been wounded. When the 1.5 million currently on active duty and their 9 million family members can get absentee ballots, they vote. So do the nearly 22 million veterans and their family members from previous wars, such as those you addressed at American Legion Post 176 in Springfield, Va. Though those who have served and currently serve in uniform represent a broad cross section of the electorate, these patriots are generally better-educated than the rest of our countrymen, somewhat more conservative politically and remarkably straightforward about their God-fearing faith. Active-duty members, reservists, veterans and their family members understand the full meaning of self-sacrifice, accountability, responsibility, hard work and commitment. As a group, they are better-informed about current events and care See north on 28

On Friday, March 30, 2012, Hisham Y. Altalib visited the White House. According to visitor logs, Altalib was received Joshby Michelle Malkin b y Syndicated Columnist ua DuBois, the director of President Obama’s Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. Four days later, White House officials welcomed a foreign delegation of the radical Sharia-enforcing Muslim Brotherhood from Egypt. The White House meeting with overseas Muslim Brotherhood leaders was reported in April by a few mainstream journalists and questioned loudly by conservative media. But the White House confab in March with U.S.-based Altalib -- which appears to be a prep session with the global Muslim Brotherhood’s American advance team -- has received no attention until now. So, who is Hisham Yahya Altalib? What is his agenda? And why exactly did the Obama administration conduct domestic “faith-based” outreach with this Muslim Brotherhood figure in Virginia, who just happens to be 1) tied to bloody jihad and 2) a major contributor to the left-wing Center for Constitutional Rights, the group of jihadi-sympathizing lawyers who helped spring suspected Benghazi terror plotter Abu Sufian bin Qumu from Gitmo? Altalib is an Iraqi-born Muslim identified by the FBI as a Muslim Brotherhood operative before he moved to America in the 1970s to earn an advanced electrical

engineering degree from Purdue University in Indiana. By his own account, Altalib “soon became active in Islamic work in North America, which continues to this day.” He was the “first full-time director of the Leadership Training Department of the Muslim Students Association of the United States and Canada (MSA)” -- a longtime Muslim Brotherhood front group whose explicit goal is to “conquer” America through Islamic propagandizing. Altalib is also a founding member of the SAAR Foundation and the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT). Last year, his online biography proudly notes, he was “awarded the ISNA (Islamic Society of North America) Community Service Award.” The Saudi-subsidized ISNA is regarded as the primary U.S. umbrella group for Muslim Brotherhood fronts and was named specifically by the global MB godfathers as a key player in their “Grand Jihad” strategy of infiltration from within. SAAR was founded in Herndon, Va., in 1983 as part of a radical Islamic charity front for Saudi financiers called the SAFA Group. The feds raided SAAR’s offices in 2002 as part of Operation Green Quest. Investigators confiscated 500 boxes and seven trucks’ worth of documents illuminating the network’s terror ties to the Al Taqwa Bank (a Swiss-based Muslim bank suspected of funding the 9/11 plot) and the Muslim Brotherhood. Altalib worked for one of Al Taqwa Bank’s main owners, Youssef Nada. Altalib’s more prominent Muslim Brotherhood partner, Jamal Barzinji (one of the champions of the Ground

The other Street is the Arab Street, in many places throughout the Middle East and South Asia, where this cauldron of hate continues to simmer. The UN address began with an emotional, moving and engaging tribute to American Ambassador Chris Stevens, killed in Libya by likely Al Qaida terrorists. The speech which was part eulogy and later lesson, presented an impressive vision of how America sees itself in the Arab world; as a politically transformative force; the old Peace Corps vision if you will. Much of the Arab Street does not see it that way. First Obama’s reprimand. “The attacks on our civilians in Benghazi were attacks on America.” But why not be clearer, “the attacks on U.S. diplomats and civilians and the American Consulate in Benghazi,” were attacks on America, not to mention assaulting the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Egypt? “We insisted on change in Egypt, because our support for democracy put us on the side of the people…We supported a transition of leadership in Yemen... We intervened in Libya alongside a broad coalition…We again declare that the regime of Bashar al-Assad must come to an end so that the suffering of the Syrian people can stop.” Though carefully using the phrase Arab Spring, the President deeply intoned, “So let us remember that this is a season of progress.” Regarding the low budget anti-

Islamic video which allegedly triggered many of the protests (curiously starting on September 11th) the President spoke of the “crude and disgusting video” sparking the outrage. While properly stating the U.S. government had nothing to do with the video (many on the rumor prone Arab Street see this a grand conspiracy), Obama then offered a lawyerly lecture on tolerance, and freedom of speech, which was equally balanced with moral relativism. Speaking sternly and with conviction, he added, “There are no words that excuse the killing of innocents. There is no video that justifies and attack on an Embassy.” This was not a classic UN address with broad-brushed themes of conflict resolution, humanitarian aid, and global economic assistance but a lecture on tolerance, intolerance and a tough-love formula for much of the Muslim world. “Understand that America will never retreat from the world…we will stand by our allies…But such efforts depend upon a spirit of mutual interest and mutual respect.” Obama rightly warned the Arab Street “A politics based only on anger—one based on dividing the world between us and them—not only sets back international cooperation, it ultimately undermines those who tolerate it,.” Namely, Americans on Main Street. It almost appears that President Obama viewed the swell of Anti-Americanism in the Middle East as a personal social slight after his once fawning outreach to both leaders and audiences in throughout the region. But American tolerance has its limits. The Iran segment was measured and cautious yet more of the same we heard from past Administrations. “Let me be clear America wants to resolve this issue through diplomacy and we believe there is still time and space to do so. But that time is not unlimited.... Make no mistake: a nuclear armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained. It would threaten the elimination of Israel, the security of Gulf nations and the stability of the global economy .......and

that is why the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.” Despite being in New York, Obama chose to forego his golden opportunity to have private one

on one meetings at the UN debate, (something American presidents historically do) with leaders from Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Pakistan among others, opting instead to return to the campaign trail and

Obama Vs. Obama During the same week when the American ambassador to Libya was murdered and his dead body dragged through the streets by celeby Thomas Sowell brating mobs, Syndicated Columnist the President of the United States found time to go on the David Letterman show to demonstrate his sense of humor and how cool he is. But Barack Obama did not have time to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the leader of a nation repeatedly threatened with annihilation by Iranian leaders, who are working feverishly toward the creation of nuclear bombs. This was an extraordinary thing in itself, something that probably no other President of the United States could have gotten away with, without raising a firestorm of criticisms and denunciations. But much of the media sees no evil, hears no evil and speaks no evil

when it comes to Barack Obama -especially during an election year. Nor was this public rebuff of a publicly requested meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu unique in its expression of disrespect, if not contempt, for both the man and his country. Despite his glowing assertions of his commitment to Israel, especially in speeches to American Jewish groups, Barack Obama has been working against Israel’s interests from his first day in the White House. As in many other contexts, Barack Obama 1 speaks but Barack Obama 2 acts -- often in the opposite direction. The vision in which Obama has been steeped is one in which white Western nations have oppressed and exploited non-white, nonWestern nations, becoming rich and arrogant at other people’s expense. It is a vision that calls out, not for justice, but for payback. When Jeremiah Wright said, “white folks’ greed runs a world in need” -- and Obama, by his own account, was moved to tears -- this captured in a few melodramatic words what a whole series of Obama’s mentors and allies had See Sowell on 38

— ART GIRL — Graffiti - Low & High Art Now Hosting Open Houses Every Week This Fall !

by Kimberly B. Severance Contributing Writer

It was an evolution that resulted in some graffiti being considered as fine art. Where it came from is the streets. Original graffiti defined, in part, groups who created their own culture, much like the groups in that long ago movie, West Side Story. This graffiti was illicitly created, often done with aerosol cans and “tagged” with the name of the graffiti artist or gang affiliation. In this context, the graffiti is considered vandalism. Local governments despise graffiti. They paint over it. Some of it is indeed deplorable. There is definitely a range. Nobody cares if Johnny love’s Suzy! Paint over it! Academia saw the originality and rawness of this sometimes untrained art. It might have been the graffiti artists pushing the envelope with the knowledge that their efforts were just “edgy” enough to catapult them from obscurity to art world success. Putting their art out in the public might invite a closer look by the art world. It got interesting when individuals who understood the lure of outsider art and what it takes to separate one’s self from the masses. They played their card and won. In this range of insignificant spray can junk and high art, there are some worthy works of art. I like some graffiti because it challenges me intellectually. My favorite graffiti artist is Jean Michel Basquiat. Or was, unfortunately. He died of a drug overdose in 1988 at the age of 28. Basquiat’s brief career is marked by periods of adulation by art critics to their accusations of selfpastiche. When I look at all of Basquiat’s work, my biggest disappointment is

“Hollywood Africans” by Jean Michel Basquiat. that his drug use ended his life. Basquiat’s art represents an intriguing juxtaposition between low and high art. The work looks crude, rushed and unpolished. Look further and you will see references to social issues and satirical terminology. Basquiat’s most well-known work is titled: Hollywood Africans. From Basquiat’s perspective, it is about mis- treatment of African Americans. Other works by Basquiat reference organizations that refuse membership to certain ethnic groups. Works that are primarily text seem to provide stream of

consciousness word play. Text entries range from “The people bought it” to lists of bone names to “Out getting ribs.” My favorites have a nice combination between words and images. I like the visual impact of these and enjoy the word play. From street to fine art, some graffiti is compelling art! Kimberly B. the golden haze of donor luncheons. Here’s what the President didn’t address. Confronting the worldwide economic recession. There was no mention of North Korea’s nuclear program, the dangerous face-off between China and Japan over disputed islands, or anything for that matter about East Asia or the Pacific Rim. There were none of the customary kudos for South American socio/ economic success stories. Nor mention of the pressing humanitarian concerns of the African Sahel, Somalia, or Haiti. Nor deep thanks to allies Turkey and Jordan for accepting the waves of Syrian refugees. So the tale of two streets, Main Street and the Arab Street, becomes the narrow narrative. by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

On Sports Unions There’s been a lot of news lately about unions. Let’s start with the National Football League officials, whom the NFL locked out in June after their contract expired. One issue involved retirement benefits―do officials retain a defined benefit or go the riskier 401K route? While the NFL is profitable and makes lots of money, the officials basically work only on Sundays for 16 weeks a year, along with a brief pre-season and (for some) a few post-season games. So we’re talking about 20 afternoons of work a year―a part-time job for sure. Why do they need such a lucrative pension deal? Another issue involves salary. There are 121 union referees in the NFL, and they share a total annual salary pool of $18 million. That figures out to around $150,000 per year, on average – a number the NFL Referees’ Union would like to see increase. (I see no need to comment further on THIS.) A third issue involves extra officiating crews. The NFL wants to add three crews to the current stable of 17―presently one for each possible game per week, plus one alternate. The plus-up would mean a total of 140 referees. But why pay 20 more people $150,000 a year to be “on-call” on Sunday afternoons? A fourth situation involves full-time vs. parttime issue. Officials only work part time for the NFL, as most have other jobs. But the league wants to

Total Security BEFORE IT HAPPENS

SKIP’S GUN & SPORT SHOP “Where you get more BANG for your buck!”

NFL Replacement Refs make a controversial call in a recent Seattle/ Green Bay game. The regular refs just ended their strike. hire seven full-time officials (one for each refereeing position) to train and scout, etc.―year round. Union referees oppose this. Unions had their place in America, and still do. I’ve been a member of three different unions. But this is not the 19th century and NFL officials are not underpaid coal miners risking their lives and well-being for heartless owners and bosses. Their demands were too much and resulted in an avoidable lockout which benefitted no one. More on Unions Less than two years after Bruins fans enjoyed the heady experience of seeing Boston win a Stanley Cup, the NHL is looking at another lockout and cancelled season, as occurred eight years ago. The league is playing tough with the players’ association. Many teams are losing money. There has been talk of contraction― of scuttling teams like the Phoenix Coyotes. Is that an outcome that Donald Fehr and the players’ association want? Fewer jobs? And what about the all the people who work at arenas and lose THEIR

jobs when there is a lockout or a strike? The FANS should organize and go on strike. That would end the madness. Chicago Teachers Union Strike To paraphrase the late Jimmy Cannon, “No one asked me, but …” Yet another example of union over-reach was the recent strike by Chicago public school teachers, whose salaries average around $76,000 a year. A side effect of the strike involved sports schedules being thrown into turmoil. When the Boston police walked off the job in 1919, Massachusetts governor Calvin Coolidge famously stated that “There is no right to strike against the public safety, anywhere, anytime.” The striking cops were all fired and Coolidge won plaudits from around the country for his tough, principled stand. A year later he was elected vice-president. Four years later he became our 30th President. Coincidence? I think NOT! Romney was/is Right Again, nobody asked See moffett on 16

me, but it rankles me to keep hearing President Obama take credit for saving General Motors while dissing Wolfeboro’s Mitt Romney for suggesting a bankruptcy option. Obama shafted GM’s bondholders and threw tons of taxpayer money at the company to temporarily prop up the union jobs and maintain the benefits that made GM non-competitive in the first place. Of course, much of that taxpayer money was

recycled by the UAW members back to the Democrat party and Obama. Romney was absolutely right. The bankruptcy process would have made GM more efficient and competitive for the long term, but Obama’s action postponed the reckoning and helped explode our deficit. Eventually, more and more people― those who are not lemmings―will figure things out. Hopefully before Nov. 6. What has this got to do

The Bel Airs, are a five member Doo Wop vocal group from southern NH. They will be taking you on a musical time machine back to the days of bee-hive hairdos, shiny metal diners, and big fins on cars. You’ve seen the renewed popularity of the songs of the 50s and 60s with shows like the PBS Specials, Glee, and Jersey Boys. The Bel Airs will perform with exquisite five part harmonies all your favorites from the roots of RockNRoll in a high energy stage show

laced with soft ballads, dance tunes, some history and a dash of humor. You may have seen them already at Hampton Beach, Salisbury Beach or on The Mt Washington. Wherever they are The Bel Airs are sure to entertain you, get your fingers snappin’, and

have you dancin in the aisles as they bring back to you those great malt-shop memories. They’ve also recently been featured on NH Chronicle and voted “Best Doo Wop Group” in NH by New Hampshire Magazine. Your assurance of a top quality show.

Big Design Ideas For Small Kitchen Spaces

Bigger isn’t always better in the real estate world, and what’s more, it’s not always possible. With more baby boomers downsizing from McMansions to smaller, more manageable houses, and a growing number of people opting to rent rather than buy, many families are looking for new ways to decorate, design and work with smaller spaces. Kitchens sell homes, but this most-used room in the house hasn’t escaped the “less is more” trend, either. Interior designers, decorators and home product makers are responding to the growing demand for practical, beautiful options that make sense in smaller kitchens. If you’re looking to make a big impact in a small kitchen, here are a few ideas to get you started: Work the walls - You may love your cozy kitchen, but that doesn’t mean you want to make it look or feel any smaller than it already is. Lighter wall colors can help a little kitchen feel more open and airy. One winning decorating technique for small kitchens

Since 1976

No Matter What The Project . . . . .

is to paint the majority of the wall space in a light neutral tone, like a pale cream or taupe and then add a pop of brighter or darker color to one accent wall or area. You can edge up the excitement of this technique by using a mural for kitchens on the accent wall, rather than just a different paint color. Have an oddly shaped niche in your kitchen? You can turn that problematic space into a design statement with custom, repositionable wallpaper that can be customsized and custom-colored to fit your specifications. This unique product can be adhered and re-ahered hundreds of times so you can take it with you to your next house if you choose.

Smart-size your appliances - Sure that 30-cubicfoot stainless steel refrigerator is beautiful in the showroom, but how much will you love it when you can’t fully open the door in your small kitchen? Refrigerators come in several sizes, so you should be able to find one that will fit your space. The same is true for stoves, microwaves and dishwashers. Choosing appliances that make size-sense for the space you have not only improves the livability of your petite kitchen, it can improve your efficiency as well. Get creative with storage - One of the biggest challenges of a small kitchen is finding space for everySee kitchen on 27

Season Of Change

by Steve White Contributing Writer

For backyard birders everywhere, autumn is one of two seasons relating to change, the other being spring. We put our clocks to rest and rely on nature to tell us that changes are approaching. Listen carefully, do you hear the silence? Birds generally use songs to announce danger, establish nesting territories or to simply attract a mate. The silence you hear is the end of nesting season and the conclusion of mate selection. Danger lurks everyday, so you may hear it occasionally when cats or hawks are nearby. One certain sound you will hear comes from the geese formations traveling south for the winter. If you look closer, you will see mixed flocks of chickadees, nuthatches, titmice and downy woodpeckers. This only occurs during the cold seasons. Many scientists believe this is due to the “more eyes theory. Many eyes can find more sources of food and have a greater attention to danger lurking about. Feeding backyard birds for the fall and winter requires some changes in humans as well. During the spring and summer months, we usually prefer locating our feeding stations near the edge of our properties where trees and shrubs offer shelter for our feathered visitors. We wish to use our yards for human ac-

tivities such as cookouts, outdoor sports and recreation. By keeping our bird feeders away from our homes, we will not spook our winged guests as they dine near our feeder pole systems or hangars. Everyone is usually very content with this arrangement. However, during the snow months, keeping the feeders away from our homes can pose a problem. Do you want to shovel through 50 yards of snow in order to get to these bird feeders? Ice and snow can be treacherous for many people, especially the physically challenged. Some of our customers have injured themselves simply trying to fill bird feeders that were situated too far away from their door. We recommend that you use this autumn season to survey your yard and try to determine a suitable location that will provide the necessary cover for your songbirds and easy access for you. For many, we have just described the deck or patio area of your backyard. For others, it may be the outdoor porch or roof soffit. Either way, think about the amount of snow or ice removal that will be needed before you can fill your bird feeders. If you are concerned that the chosen location fulfills your requirements but may not offer the required shelter for the birds, we have a simple solution. Go out into the woods now before the snow cover arrives and pick up some large branches that have fallen off the trees. You want ones that are approximately 6-8’ long with many smaller branches coming off the main branch. Tie these along the deck or porch railing, near the feeders but not next to them. By creating this manmade forest, the

Morin Electric LLC

birds will feel safer coming out into the open area where the bird feeders are now located. The perfect solution for creating a forest within your deck area is available after the Christmas season is over. Ask your neighbors if you can have their old Christmas trees and tie these along your railing instead of the empty tree branches. These fir trees will usually last throughout the winter season and be a welcomed sanctuary to your songbirds.

thing from pots and pans to flatware, dishes and foodstuffs. Small spaces call for storage creativity. Whether you hang some pots and pans overhead, replace traditional cabinet shelves with pullout drawers or use special racks to store plates vertically, you can find plenty of creative small-kitchen storage solutions. Liven things up with light - Often, a small kitchen will have just one window - or no window at all. Yet light is an important way to make a tight space feel more expansive and inviting. Task lighting is essential for work areas in small spaces. Pendant lights can create ambiance and provide practical illumination without sacrificing any wall space. And if you crave natural light for your windowless kitchen, consider installing a skylight. Tubular skylights can bring sunlight into your groundfloor kitchen even if there’s a second floor above it.

deeply about America and our nation’s future. They know real leadership when they see it and resent being taken for granted. They have heard all the things wrong with the current administration and don’t need to have it rehashed. They all know that Osama bin Laden is dead. They also know from current events in the Middle East that the White House lied to everyone about how bin Laden’s demise would end the radical Islamist jihad being waged against us. There is too little time left in this campaign to go back over all of the ways the incumbent administration has failed our nation’s security. What’s important now is that you tell veterans and active-duty service members how you would do better. And here’s the bottom line: There are millions of Americans who have served in uniform. They and their families can make a big difference in the so-called swing states. To that end, I proffer a few lines you may want to use in the upcoming debates. Full disclosure here: These aren’t my ideas. This is what the brightest and bravest of this generation now in uniform hope to

Since the 1800s border collies have competed in herding trials throughout the U.S. and United Kingdom. “They’re very smart, and their work ethic is like nothing else I’ve ever seen, echoes Lynn Deschambeault of Denmark, ME, who keeps seven border collies inside her home, and competes in herding dog trials throughout the Northeast, in addition to running the event at the Highland Games. “They have a lot of instinct and natural ability, and a lot of heart to work with you, explains Denise Leonard, who uses four border collies to herd sheep in Greenfield, Mass. This year, Leonard’s dog, Emmie, was one of 36 dogs to compete at the Highland Games; the event is considered an important qualifier for the herding dog nationals to be held in Belgrave, Virginia, in 2013. “You never know how it will turn out, says

At the Highland Games, dog owners remain at the base of the hill, directing their dogs with a series of voice commands and undulating whistles that sound like song bird calls. Then he bought a border collie puppy and trained him as a young dog. “I was hooked from then on,” says Young. “It was the dog that opened the door, and got us back into agriculture on a smaller scale.” In 1991, John Gunny Smith of Ossipee, New Hampshire; Donald Mel Campbell of Wolfeboro and Roger Deschambeault, a sheep farmer and border collie breeder and trainer from Center Conway, put together the first herding dog event at the New Hampshire Highland Games, now in its 37th year. It consisted of the Deschambeault family, their border collies and sheep giving a demonstration to nearly 300 spectators. “Today we have people who come only on Fridays so they can sit on the hillside in lawn chairs and watch the dogs,” says Smith, 76, a retired U.S. Marine of Scottish ancestry, and a lifelong border collie fan. “These dogs have been bred for centuries to do what they do. So much is instinctive by now.” Two years ago, Smith adopted Dart, a border collie who retired from her last Highland Games

best! Of the four, my favorite roommate was from right here in Keene. His name was Robert (Bob) Hall. Bob was a teacher and school administrator here in the Keene school system and eventually he was the Superintendent of Schools. Apparently, he was a popular man in those roles, based on the remarks of people who came to visit him here. He also had a dedicated family, consisting of his daughter and his wife Anita who both came to see him here. Anita was here every day possible and was very devoted to Bob, as Bob was to her. Bob’s medical problems became overwhelming and so he is gone. My life’s been enriched for having known Bob and he and I hit it off. Neither of us was adept at suffering fools! been saying for decades. No wonder it resonated with him. Despite hopes that Barack Obama’s election as President of the United States would mark the beginning of a post-racial era in America, no hope was ever so completely doomed from the outset. Anyone who looks beyond Obama’s

soothing words about race to his record, from his joining self-segregated black students in college to his appointing Al Sharpton as a White House adviser, can see the contrast between rhetoric and reality. Barack Obama is not the first leader of a nation whose actions reflected some half-baked vision, enveloped in lofty rhetoric

and spiced with a huge dose of ego. Nor would he be the first such leader to steer his nation into a historic catastrophe. In Barack Obama’s case, the potential for catastrophe is international in scope, and perhaps irretrievable in its consequences, as he stalls with feckless gestures as terrorist-sponsoring Iran moves toward the production of nuclear bombs. The rhetoric of Obama 1 says that he will protect Israel but the actions of Obama 2 have in fact pro-

tected Iran from an Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities -- until now it is questionable whether Iran’s deeply buried nuclear facilities can be destroyed by the Israelis. Those deeply buried facilities took time to build, and Obama’s policies gave them that time, with his lackadaisical approach of seeking United Nations resolutions and international sanctions that never had any serious chance of stopping Iran’s movement toward becoming a nuclear power. And Barack Obama

had to know that. In March, “Foreign Policy” magazine reported that “several high-level sources” in the Obama administration had revealed Israel’s secret relationship with Azerbaijan, where Israeli planes could refuel to or from an air strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities. The administration feared “the risks of an Israeli strike on Iran,” according to these “high-level sources.” Apparently the risks of an Iranian nuclear strike on Israel are not so much feared. This leak was one of the historic and unconscionable betrayals of an ally whose very existence is threatened. But the media still saw no evil, heard no evil and spoke no evil. The only question now is whether the American voters will wake up before it is too late -- not just for Israel, but for America. Temple B’nai Israel Hosts Folk Music Concert & Italian Dinner At Pitman’s Freight Room

Temple B’nai Israel presents a program of first rate contemporary folk music by noted guitarist and songwriter, Phil Henry, accompanied by equally talented Gary Moon. The concert is preceded by an unusual Italian dinner prepared by Temple Chef, Lou Gaynor whose food focus for this dinner is an assortment of meats, cheeses, pastas and breads served fondue style, to be dipped in the homemade marinara sauce of his own signature recipe. This event takes place at the funky, updated Pitman’s Freight Room in Laconia on Saturday, October 13 at.6:30pwqm. Phil Henry’s reputation grows exponentially as he continues to win multiple major national songwriting contests and performs at music festivals up and down the East Coast and beyond. This recognition includes winner of the New Jersey Folk Festival, spots in the Grassy Hill Kereville New Folk Competition, the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Showcase, grand prize winner in the SolarFest songwriter showcase and in the Susquehanna Arts and Music Festival songwriting contest. His style is reminiscent of old

An Italian Dinner will be served before the show. school, storytelling folk music in the tradition of Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger and James Taylor. Henry performs as an acoustic duo, trio or sometimes full band concert. Percussionist Gary Moon provides the seamless accompanying music in this duo concert. When he is not performing, Phil

Henry is teaching, conducting and building instruments. TBI members Stu Needleman and Ken Goodman “discovered” Phil Henry at an informal barn concert in Sanbornton and came away full of the magic of his music and the wish to share it in the lakes region community.

However young or old you are, folk music is embedded in your memories and you will smile and remember…as you hear Phil Henry’s new age twist on universal and contemporary themes. They will enrich the music you hear in your head and your heart. The venue, Pitman’s Freight Room, constructed in 1890 as a hosiery freight depot in downtown Laconia, has been renovated and has all modern conveniences, while keeping it’s rustic charm intact. It is located at 94 New Salem St. in downtown Laconia. Directions at www.pitmansfreightroom.com. The date for this unusual TBI fund raiser is Saturday, October 13, dinner served buffet style at 6:30pm and followed by the music at 8pm. The cost for this all inclusive (but B.Y.O.B.) evening of dinner, dessert and entertainment is $27.50 per person. Groups of 4 or more pay a reduced rate of $25 per person. Tickets are available at the Temple website www.tbinh.org by mailing your check to Temple B’nai Israel, 210 Court Street, Laconia 03246, or by calling the temple at 603-5247044 for further information.
