has recently introduced New Hampshire’s newest television station and his latest challenge –WBIN, in Derry. WBIN is part of a larger media group – Carlisle One Media, Inc., a company out of Portsmouth that is controlled by Binnie. Originally going by the call letters, WZMY-TV, the purchase happened in May of 2011 as the station

The Funspot Family Entertainment Center in The Weirs is ready again to host the biggest and best Halloween Party in The Lakes Region. On Saturday, October 20, Funspot’s annual Family Halloween Party will be held from 6-10pm and all are invited. All guests who come in costume will be given free tokens to play any of Funspot’s 500 games including 200 prize games and a big redemption center. Costume judging will be held in many different age categories starting at 7pm: 4 and under, 5-7 years, 8-10 years, 11-14 years, 15-18 years and finishing with ages 18+ with prizes for the winners. Farm-To-Fork Harvest Dinner Connects The Lakes Region To the Cocheco Valley On Thursday, October 25th, a unique version of a popular concept will bring the Lake Region and the Cocheco Valley together for a great night, The Farm-To Fork Harvest Dinner will be hosted by the Orchard Street Chop Shop in downtown Dover featuring harvest crops and baked goods from Moulton Farm in Meredith. Chris “Koz” Kozlowski, owner and head chef of the Orchard Street Chop Shop has perfected the art of the dry-aged prime steak, the signature item of his popular Dover restaurant. “Koz” also has a long connection to the Lakes Region having worked as a prep cook at a summer camp in Wolfeboro and then in the kitchen at Hart’s Turkey Farm in Meredith, just around the street from Moulton Farm. “Koz” is also a graduate of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America and has also served as a master brewer at the Shipyard Brewing Company in Maine. Our Story The Weirs Times was first published in 1883 by Mathew H. Calvert. The newspaper, then named Calvert’s Weirs Times and Tourists’ Gazette, was published until Mr. Calvert’s death in 1902. One of the most remarkable features of the publication was a map of Lake Winnipesaukee which occupied the center spread of the paper. We have kept at bay the need for a sales and income tax, and we have found ways to balance budgets without continually digging into the pockets of our residents. There will be many challenges in the years ahead and I see only one candidate who has the experience and knowledge to meet that task. That person is Ovide LaMontagne. A person who has the personal commitment and the drive to improve our state and the courage to look at new ideas and options. I encourage all to vote and cast your ballot for Ovide. Charter Schools To The Editor: The NH Board of Education has been turning down new charter schools on the basis of an assumed shortfall of fund-

ing. Charlie Arlinghaus’s recent op-ed did a very good job of explaining why this was not true. A critical – but heretofore overlooked – point is that the recently passed SB 401 changed the state adequate aid payments, which will significantly reduce the real cost to the state of expanding charter school options for parents. Thanks to SB 401, the state will now use one year old enrollment data rather than three to four year old data. To see how this lowers the program’s cost, take the following example: A student moves from a traditional public school into a charter school. The charter school will receive $5450 per pupil from the state. The charter schools get paid based on “real time� enrollment. However, state adequacy aid to public school is based on three to four year old enrollment data, so the public school continues to receive adequacy aid for three to four years, even though the student is no longer attending that school. Before SB 401, the state would have paid the public school $12,600 - $16,800 for an empty desk (at the average state adequacy funding of $4,200). The real cost to the state Is much lower than the Board of Education assumes. Beginning in 2013, adequacy aid payments will be based on previous year’s enrollment data. This means that the true cost of parental school

choice would be $5450 for one year, then only $1250 after that. This was the whole point of SB 401 – to put charter schools and traditional public schools on a more equal playing field in order to provide options to families. The cost to the state, other than that first year, is nearly equal, so there is no reason to put a moratorium on charter schools or slow the chartering process. Charter school enrollments in 2010 and 2011 were 1,280 and 1,522 respectively. Expected enrollment for 2012 is 1,839. Under the previous law, the state would have saved $5.4M in adequacy grants, using 2010 enrollment data. Under SB 401, the state will save $7.7M, using the higher, more timely 2012 data. The significant difference - $2.3 million – represents double payments, tax dollars for an empty desk. The bottom line is that parents are gaining access to education choices they didn’t have before through a fiscally-sound program. Those who assume a revenue shortfall are wrong. Next year we could expand the charter school program by $2.3M with no impact to the state budget compared to the old law. That’s enough to fund 422 charter school students. In 2014, those students would drop off the public school rolls, reducing their cost to around only $500,000. So, the question for the State Board of Education: Why did you impose a moratorium? Sen. A Man And His Dream

As you may or may not know, I am running for Governor of New Hampshire under the Flatlander Ticket. I have been doing this since 2000 and, as you may or may not know, I have yet to win. It has been my dream since I started these campaigns to make a difference to not only the New Hampshire way of life, but to my own life as well. There is a lot I’d like to accomplish but, without an election victory, this is impossible. You see, in New Hampshire the governor is elected for two years at an annual salary of a little over $100,000 a year. Even if you stink at the job – which is very easy to do as it happens all the time– you can’t get fired and you are guaranteed a cool $200,000 plus. This is a little more than I make right now and I could do a lot with this money. I could pay off bills, maybe build an addition on my house, take that much needed vacation (after my term ends of course). These have been my aspirations since I first ran for Governor. I knew that I could make some real changes in my life and if, along the way, I got the chance to sign a couple of bills that would be good for New Hampshire, then it’s a

win-win. I also figured that after I was governor, even if I did stink, I could write a book about what it was like to be governor. Name a few names, make up some facts. I’m sure this would be good for maybe six figures (hopefully numbers). Then, if and when the book is a success, I could charge good money for people to have me come and talk about the book, getting more people to buy it, making it a bestseller and then getting more people to pay me to talk about it. A vicious but lucrative circle. Maybe after that I could become a political consultant and get paid to help other people who wanted to be governor. Of course, the ultimate gig would be getting a spot on some news program as a contributor. That would really be sweet. But, I won’t be greedy. I’ll take the most money I can get from this whole deal and be happy. As you can see, the potential for cashing in on this opportunity is enormous and can set someone up for life, if they know how to take advantage of it. Forget about putting on that addition; I’m sure a whole new house would be in order; maybe two. Still, obviously, the hardest thing to do is to get elected in the first place. The best dreams are never realized without conquering a few obstacles - I read that somewhere. But these are dreams I have been holding on to for way too long without realizing them and, I must admit, it is getting frustrating. After twelve years I’m becoming convinced that it just won’t happen. I’ve given it just about

all I can. So, I am making this year my final try for the governor’s seat. If I fail, I will have to develop some new lofty goals. That is why I turn to you, the voter, this one last time. This year let’s not make this election about the economy or social issues; let’s make it is about the realization of one man’s dreams‌ mine. It’s time to put aside all this negative talk about budgets and taxes and programs and focus on something truly positive for a change. Just think of the encouragement it would give to others who have also been working hard to reach their particular stars and are one step away from giving up. I’m convinced that in this time of economic uncertainty and global instability nothing would ease the psyche of the American public more than a good-old fashioned success story. Why not mine? So there you have it; my final plea. Take from it what you will when you cast your vote for governor in November. Write my name in that blank box on the bottom and help make this dream a reality. A vote for me in this election wouldn’t just be a vote for a new governor; it would be a vote for the American Dream. A victory for me might just satisfy that missing dream in you. Or not. The Deadly Disgrace of Obama’s Pro-Terrorist Lawyers

-- “If you leave here like you left Iraq, I am a dead man,” says the blunt-speaking district governor. His district chief of police, a by Oliver North newly appointed Syndicated Columnist civil judge and the chief of the Afghan Local Police detachment all nod their heads in assent. None of them is smiling. We are reminded by the commander of the special operations unit with whom we are living not to broadcast names or faces of Afghan security force personnel. The local district governor is speaking through an interpreter. He doesn’t pull any punches: “You must not abandon us again. You helped us expel the Soviets and then left us to the Taliban and al-Qaida. Look what happened to you. When you came back, we put our lives and our families at risk because you told us you would help us rebuild our country. But now you are leaving before the job is done. We have enemies to our

east and west. They are your enemies, as well. But your deadline means we are dead.” It’s a familiar refrain throughout this trip to Afghanistan. Over the past two weeks, we have heard similar messages from Afghan officials and police chiefs in Kandahar, Kabul, Helmand, Zabul and Wardak provinces. At every location, the story is basically the same: “The Americans left Iraq. Now they are leaving Afghanistan.” For people here, evidence of the just-completed drawdown is ubiquitous. When the “fighting season” began this spring, there were more than 100,000 U.S. military personnel deployed on bases around the country. The withdrawal of 33,000 U.S. surge troops -- leaving fewer than 68,000 American soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines on the ground -- means scores of these outposts now are manned by Afghan forces or simply abandoned. But it’s the Obama administration’s well-publicized “exit strategy” that causes the greatest apprehension among Afghan ofSee north on 12

The current Democratic White House has not only delayed and denied justice to the victims and their families. President Obama’s foot-dragging administration, crawling with pro-terrorist lawyers, effectively undermines our nation’s ability to detain, contain and destroy jihad threats from within and without. al-Rahim al-Nashiri has been in U.S. custody since 2002 and at Gitmo since 2006. In February 2009, Obama met with Cole families and promised them justice. Then, he stabbed them in the back by ordering the (Social) Justice Department to abandon the death penalty case assembled against the al-Qaida mastermind under the Bush administration. That’s right: The Osama bin Laden football-spikers in the Obama administration deliberately dropped the USS Cole ball on al-Nashiri’s military prosecution because of their opposition to the Guantanamo Bay detention system. Jesse Nieto, father of murdered Cole sailor Marc Nieto, won’t forget it. “That really left a bitter, bad taste in my mouth,” he told the Newnan (Ga.) TimesHerald earlier this year. In 2011, the Obama administration reinstated the charges amid a widespread backlash against Attorney General Eric Holder’s plans to bestow U.S. civilian trials in Manhattan to foreign Gitmo goons. But the trial has been plagued by yet more delays and left-wing lawyer antics painting Nashiri as a victim of American hegemony. “This whole trial is a political football the politicians are playing with,” Nieto aptly noted. “If they left it to the military, it would be taken care of. And it would be fair.” Team Obama’s initial withdrawal from the prosecution came out of left field -- literally. But it is no surprise to those who paid attention to Holder’s radical ideological and corporate allegiances. Zambia Unsung Success Story in Southern Africa UNITED NATIONS—It’s not

often that the southern African country of Zambia makes headlines. Fortunately the country by John J. It has however been cursed in the past by the usual state planning and African socialist models which were so pervasive and ultimately harmful to developing countries. Being aware of the economic travails of this resource-rich but oft underperforming landlocked country, when I heard that a profree market opposition leader had been elected the new President, I knew that with good governance, Zambia once known as Northern Rhodesia, was poised to prosper. Best known for the Victoria Falls, the natural wonder shared with neighboring Zimbabwe, and magnificent game parks, Zambia wants to expand beyond tourist images. “Zambia is open for Business” President Michael Sata told investors here in New York. “As one of the most politically stable African states since independence in 1964,”he acknowledged “market oriented policies since the 1990’s which have promoted stability through good government and the rule of law.” “The Zambian economy is open for business and trade,” Sata stated adding that a GDP growth rate of 7% or higher is expected for this year. Even during the past years of global economic recession, Zambia averaged over 6 % growth since 2007. The World Bank ranks Zambia as one of the top ten economies in doing business in Sub-Saharan Africa, a fact which has eased the way for both large and small investors. Sata stressed that “fighting corruption” was one of the priorities of his new government. As he told a UN meeting on the Rule of Law, “Since my government assumed power a year ago, Zambians have embraced a reinvigorated pro-

gram to promote respect for the rule of Law by fighting vices such as corruption.” Fighting corruption, “has significantly helped in restoring confidence in the governance system.” Speaking separately to business executives, Sata added that “socialist countries offer guarantees” for business and is through those guarantees that corruption often comes. The populist president, a practicing Catholic, once worked as a railway porter in London before entering post-independence politics. Known to court controversy, President Sata (75) remains close with Robert Mugabe, longtime dictator of neighboring Zimbabwe. Strategically situated in south/ central Africa, Zambia profits from membership in the Southern African Development Community, (SADC) a regional trade bloc including South Africa. Robert Sichinga, the Harvardeducated Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry told executives that Zambia has attracted an impressive inflow in foreign investments. Investment surged from $72 million in 2001, to $357 million in 2005 to $1.7 billion in 2010. The figures are expected to reach $4.7 billion this year. Canada, the People’s Republic of China, and Britain, the former colonial power, are among the leaders. Copper has long been king in Zambia. With high world commodity prices, the country is reaping benefits. But getting the copper out of a landlocked country required railroads to the coast, and this was one of China’s original entrées into the country in the 1960’s through the TanZam railroad from the copper belt to Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania. Chinese investment in the mining sector, long a bone of political contention among Zambia’s political parties and including an early campaign issue of the current government, has become a given. PRC investment stands at about $2 billion and is growing beyond the mining sector. The controversial Huawei telecommunications firm is entrenched as are many construction companies. A recent article in the Times of

Zambia outlining Chinese economic penetration cites some statistics. In 2010 two-way trade between China and Zambia reached $2.5 billion an almost hundred percent increase over the previous year. Road, bridge

Many people will learn for the first time from Ann Coulter’s book how a drunken hoodlum and ex-convict, who tried to attack the police, was turned into a victim and a martyr by the media, simply by editing a videotape and broadcasting that edited version, over and over, across the nation. They will learn how a jury -which saw the whole unedited videotape and acquitted the police officers of wrongdoing -- was portrayed as racist, setting off riots that killed innocent people who had nothing to do with the Rodney King episode. Meanwhile, the people whose slick editing set off this chain of events received a Pulitzer Prize. Even the Republican President of the United States, George H.W. Bush, expressed surprise at the jury’s verdict, after seeing the edited videotape, while the jury saw the whole unedited videotape. Even Presidents should keep their mouths shut when they don’t know all the facts. Perhaps especially Presidents. Innumerable other examples of racial events and issues that

have been twisted and distorted beyond recognition are untangled and revealed for the frauds that they are in “Mugged.” The whole history of the role of the Democrats and the Republicans in black civil rights issues is taken apart and examined, showing with documented fact after documented fact how the truth turns out repeatedly to be the opposite of what has been portrayed in most of the media. It has long been a matter of official record that a higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats, in both Houses of Congress, voted for the landmark civil rights legislation of the 1960s. Yet the great legend has come down to us that Democrats created the civil rights revolution, over the opposition of the Republicans. Since this all happened nearly half a century ago, even many Republicans today seem unaware of the facts, and are defensive about their party’s role on racial issues, while Democrats boldly wrap themselves in the mantle of blacks’ only friends and defenders. To puff up their role as defenders of blacks, it has been necessary for Democrats and their media supporters to hype the dangers of “racists.” This has led to some very creative ways of defining and portraying people as “racists.” Ann Coulter has a whole chapter titled “You Racist!” with examples of how extreme and absurd this organized namecalling can become. No book about race would be complete without an examination of the role of character assassination in racial politics. Some things are universal. They seem to pop up everywhere. Mandalas are circular designs that occur in art and nature. They are also called radial designs, from a vocabulary perspective. Nature’s mandalas occur in star fruit, sea anemones and the simple apple that is cut at the “equator.” Nautical shells are often cut and used in jewelry designs that tout the beauty of the spiral. Even snowflakes are mandalas, if you have the right camera to see them. In architecture, mandalas can be found in European cathedrals. They are represented in the form of stained glass “rose” windows. Labyrinths are also circular in fashion and are used for reflection while walking. Inside the European cathedral Chartres, light shines down upon an inner labyrinth – a spectacular architectural design feature. Stupas are structures that represent the mandala in architectural form. Stupas are an ancient form of the mandala. They are places of worship for

This week at a conference in Brussels, NATO leaders reaffirmed the Obama plan to end all coalition combat operations next year and withdraw the U.S.-led International Security Assistance Force in 2014. In neighboring Pakistan and Iran, anti-American propaganda mills and radical Islamists are exploiting the anxiety about the future. Taliban, al-Qaida and Haqqani network “information ministries� routinely churn out claims that they are “driving out the infidel occupiers� while issuing threats to kill the “puppets who cooperate with them.� Here on the ground, U.S. and allied commanders express hopes that after coalition combat troops complete the handover for security to the Afghan government, “a sufficient number of our personnel will remain to advise, train and assist� their police and military to ensure stability. But everyone knows that will depend on decisions made in Washington and Kabul. And therein is the greatest source of angst for all who have sacrificed so much blood and treasure in the shadows of the Hindu Kush. The precipitous withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq raises questions about whether a second Obama administration would vigorously pursue a status of forces agreement with Kabul. Absent such an accord, it would be highly unlikely that American military personnel would remain here long enough to help their Afghan counterparts build capacity to protect the country from internal and external threats. Unfortunately, this uncertainty comes at a time when Afghan national security forces are experiencing an extraordinary improvement in capability, competence and skill. And no organization here typifies this change better than the Afghan Local Police. Established in August 2010 by a presidential decree, the ALP has more than 16,000 officers and

operates under the authority of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Interior. It is now the first line of protection for the Afghan people. Deployed in 137 rural village stability operations throughout the country, ALP detachments, mentored by 60 special operations teams from 23 nations, are proving to be the most cost-effective measure yet taken in denying the Taliban safe haven and transit. Candidates for the ALP program are selected by their local village and district leaders. After being vetted for reliability and commitment -- and trained for 21 days by U.S., coalition and Afghan professionals in how to “move, shoot, communicate and respect the civil rights of their neighbors� -- they become full-fledged members of their “hometown civil defense force.� “Green-on-blue,� or insider, attacks -- in which Afghans wearing military or police uniforms have turned their guns on their U.S. or NATO mentors -- have captured the attention of the mainstream media. But only three such events have occurred in two years of the ALP program. Intelligence reports indicate that Taliban commanders are offering “bounties� for targeting ALP officers. On Oct. 2, while we were embedded with a U.S. Navy SEAL team, two ALP officers were wounded by an improvised explosive device -- one of them seriously enough to be evacuated. After the helicopter took off, a SEAL veteran of six tours said: “That could have been me. But he wanted to walk point to protect me. He’s a brave man. Hope he comes back soon.� Realizing the hope that a brave ALP officer will return to the fight may well depend on American credibility. If he fears we won’t keep our commitments, he won’t fight. The precipitous withdrawal from Iraq, exaggerated claims about a “death blow� inflicted on al-Qaida and misrepresentations on what really happened at our consul-

way, a New Hampshire icon. “It was important to get Al,” said Binnie. “He is indicative of who we are as a state.” A recent acquisition of programming gave credence to Binnie’s statement of developing a competitiveness in the market as WBIN added both the popular Entertainment Tonight and The Insider in five-year deals after they had been broadcast for years on WMUR. The station also has its own local morning show The Buzz from 6-9am every weekday. News is also a very important ingredient to the WBIN mix. “We are only focusing on the serious news,” said

Binnie, “You won’t see a lot of “cat up a tree stories.’” The station provides a nightly newscast at 10pm which is partnered with the Boston Globe and Bloomberg News. “We want to bring a more northern New England centered programming,” said Binnie. A big player in programming will also be political coverage with three fulltime political reporters on hand which is headed by Director of Political Affairs, Periklis Karoutas who has worked in the past as an advisor to Jeb Bradley when he was in the US Congress. Most significantly, WBIN has stepped into the political arena with their in studio broadcasts, this year, of debates between the New Hampshire Gubernatorial candidates and opponents for the US Congress from New Hampshire as well. They were also a co-sponsor of the Republican Presidential Primary Debate held in October of 2011 at Dartmouth College in Hanover along with Bloomberg News and The Washington Post. Of course, nothing is more important in this equation than a strong infrastructure. With the large investment that was made to revamp the studio and bring it more into the 21st century. A good example is the conversion of the control room. In the old control room, the operators had to wear sweaters to work to compensate for the cold air which was essential to keeping computers they shared the same room with operational. They now have their own, warm, studio from which to work from while the new updated computer system has its own, temperature-controlled, room. Other plans are in the works to expand the on ground media reach of

WBIN with the possible conversion of a downtown school in Concord to a media center as well as looking at a possible site in the Laconia area. WBIN is only one part of a larger media involvement for Binnie. He has also partnered in the acquisition of other television studios and seventeen northern New England radio stations formerly owned by the Nassau Broadcasting Partners.

There‌I said it. Veteran backyard birders do not need a calendar to know the time of year. We do not need to watch the media outlets to understand that a season of change is rapidly approaching. Schools have welcomed the arrival of children, much to the chagrin of youngsters everywhere. If you are spending your relaxing time watching your birds in the trees and bushes, you should be noticing all the signs that wild birds are showing you. Are the mourning doves gathering in the early daylight hours in larger numbers? Have starlings, grackles or blackbirds, once again, taken over your bird feeders? Are the woodpeckers showing up in greater numbers along with the nuthatches, titmice and chickadees? Are the goldfinches back with a vengeance and do they appear to be more brilliant than ever before? How about those blue jays? Have you seen so many blue jays gathering in large flocks since springtime? Each of these wild bird species are exhibiting very visible signs that change is coming. During the hot months, if you start to see these flocks increasing in numbers, then the end of summer is approaching and autumn is just around the corner.

During the nesting seasons, wild birds breakoff from the large spring flocks to establish predetermined breeding territories. The late spring/ early summer time frames are dedicated to nest building, egg laying and fledgling stages. Once these important events are completed, the birds will start to gather again, species specific, for the fall season. It is during the upcoming cool season that birds begin to “beef up�. Increasing each species fat intake is a daily task. More eyes protect the flocks from predators above and below as they gorge on wild seeds. When the winter season arrives, birds will have already established their second annual territory. Birds establish two very distinct territories each

year. Spring territories provide nesting birds the comfort zone necessary to protect the young from competing wild bird species. Fall territories are needed to affix areas for food and shelter. Like Donald Rumsfeld, who was both the youngest and oldest Secretary of Defense during two different eras, Clark’s split tenure offers him an extraordinary perspective on PSU athletics as well as on college sports in

general. Plymouth State has acquired a national reputation for its sports program, and the achievements of Panther teams and individuals could fill a book. I recently attended some Hall of Fame Weekend events in Plymouth, and the Hall of Fame Induction Banquet Program itself was ample testament to PSU’s extraordinary sports legacy. Aside from the many student-athletes, coaches, and teams who’ve built the Plymouth tradition of success, there is a developing sports infrastructure that Panther followers can also take pride in. I attended a “Panther Pride Brunch” at the college’s new Welcome Center and Ice Arena, and was quite impressed not only by the sparkling new Hanaway Rink, but by the plans the college has for an ALLWell Center, an ambitious four-part project which promises to reinvent the integration of athletics and academics at Plymouth State. One of the class of Yemeni Gitmo detainees that Falkoff described as “gentle, thoughtful young men” was released in 2005 -- only to blow himself up (gently and thoughtfully, of course) in a truck bombing in Mosul, Iraq, in 2008, killing 13 soldiers from the 2nd Iraqi Army division and seriously wounding 42 others. In January 2010, The Times of London reported that “at least a dozen former Guantanamo Bay inmates (had) rejoined alQaida to fight in Yemen.” Another Yemeni Gitmo recidivist and top al-Qaida leader, Said al-Shihri, was freed after undergoing “rehabilitation” -- and then promptly rejoined jihadi forces. He was reportedly killed in a U.S. missile strike last month. In February 2010, GOP Sen. Charles Grassley forced Holder to acknowledge that at least nine DOJ attorneys officially represented or served as advocates for Gitmo detainees before joining the Obama administration. They work in the offices of the attorney general, the acting deputy attorney general, the associate attorney general, and the assistant attorney general for the criminal division. In addition, the assistant attorney general for the civil division previously represented one Afghan detainee, and his former employer represents other detainees. Gitmo recidivists -- a burgeoning Obama demographic that includes suspected Benghazi jihad plotter Abu Sufian Ibrahim Ahmed Hamuda bin Qumu -- certainly are better off than they were four years ago. The question is: Can Americans at home and abroad really afford another four years of Obama, Holder and their soft-on-terror government attorneys sabotaging national security? Silent Movie Classic ‘Phantom of the Opera’ at Flying Monkey in Plymouth Thursday, October 25th at 6:30pm

It was cinema’s first real shocker—a movie so frightening that its original audiences would shriek in terror and even faint. It was ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ (1925), the silent horror film starring legendary actor Lon Chaney. The classic tale of the mad musician who lurks in the shadows of the Paris Opera House will be revived with live music on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 6:30pm at the Flying Monkey Moviehouse and Performance Center, 39 South Main St., Plymouth. The screening, the latest in the Flying Monkey’s silent film series, will feature live accompaniment by Jeff Rapsis, a New Hampshirebased composer who specializes in creating scores for silent films. Admission is $10 per person. ‘The Phantom of the Opera,’ adapted from a 19th century novel by French author Gaston Leroux, featured Lon Chaney as the deformed Phantom who haunts the depths of the opera house. the opera’s management to make the woman he loves into a star. The film is most famous for Lon Chaney’s intentionally horrific, self-applied make-up, which was kept a studio secret until the film’s premiere. Chaney transformed his face by painting his eye sockets black, giving a skull-like impression to them. He also pulled the tip of his nose up and pinned it in place with wire, enlarged his nostrils with black paint, and put a set of jagged false teeth into his mouth to complete the ghastly deformed look of the Phantom. Chaney’s disfigured face is kept covered in the film until the nowfamous unmasking scene, which prompted the film’s original audiences to shriek in terror. Rapsis performs on a digital synthesizer that reproduces the texture of the full orchestra and creates a traditional “movie score” sound.
