Guns have always been at the center of many political arguments. A right of Americans under the Second Amendment, incidents of violence perpetrated by unstable individuals with firearms often seem to be the only example used

by those who wish to strip us of this right. The part of the equation which is often overlooked is the vast majority of those who use firearms responsibly and take that responsibility seriously. The Sig Sauer Academy in Epping, New Hampshire, has, for twenty years, been used as a premier educa-

(Alton winter hrs Thu-Sun 8am-6pm)

The Ossipee Mountains are located on the northeast side of Lake Winnipesauke and many of the trails are part of the Castle in the Clouds estate owned by the Lake Region Conservation Trust since 2002. As I understand it, in a nutshell, awhile back millions were spent on conservation easements and yet old trailheads were posted by unhappy landowners. A man appreciated by some and no so much by others had produced a fabulously detailed map (trailbandit. org) and about the same time the LRCT began promoting hiking. Trails disappeared from guidebooks, hiking websites gave warning and the LRCT invited everyone to hike from the fine estate thus adding a few more miles to reach Mt Shaw. Thankfully the Mt. Shaw

Trailhead is no longer posted but it isn’t signed or marked in anyway. My 1976 AMC White Mountain Guide gives a good description of the trailhead and trail. You’ll find it on the north side of Route 171 in Tuftonboro, a short distance east of Sodon Road. There appears to be an unofficial parking area and there were about a dozen cars already parked there when we arrived. We followed the old road and I knew that the trail would follow Fields Brook but the road swung slightly right away from it and it returned to it quickly. We passed by the hemlock grove and waterfall camping place and we saw the old water pipe on the side of the trail, just as my old guidebook illustrated. (Obviously camping here is no longer allowed, it is private

land and too close to the brook and trail.) Moments later we met a couple on the trail who asked us if we knew which way the trail went. Maybe the trail once crossed the brook where the nice wide woods road had disappeared, we continued straight ahead on a worn path slightly obscured by fall leaves. The narrow path went over a small bump and then we returned to the woods road. I noticed a blaze on a tree and I turned around and behind me I saw a LRCT sign informing descending hikers to stay on the trail and to respect private property. From this point the trail was well marked with blazes all the way. Charlie and I exchanged pleasantries with four happy college students on their See patenaude on 9

Guest Editorial My Picks for November 6th Elections I believe this election, November 6, 2012, will be the most important election of my lifetime. We as a nation are clearly at a crossroads by Tom Thomson and our vote Orford, NH. will determine the fate of ourselves but more importantly for our children and grandchildren. My pick for President is Governor Mitt Romney; I, like many, have not been impressed with President Obama’s “Hope and Change” over the past four years. Whether you voted for President Obama four years ago or not, please consider a few facts that in my opinion are destroying the hopes and dreams of our hard working Americans. 1. Even after trillions of dollars that President Obama spent to supposedly improve the economy, unemployment under his watch has increased to 8.3% and has remained above 8% for over 43 consecutive months. 2. When President Obama took office gas prices were $1.85 per gallon and today they have more than doubled at $4 per gallon. While gas, diesel, heating oil and electricity have increased, Obama has stood in the way of our increasing domestic production. For example: killing construction of the Keystone pipeline and increasing his war of regulations on this nation’s coal production. 3. All of Obama’s policies have had a negative impact on Ameri-

can workers who have seen over a four thousand dollar loss in their median income. 4. During Obama’s nearly four years as President he has increased the national debt from 10.6 trillion to over 16 trillion dollars. It was reported today that each share per household is now $137,000 for our national debt. This debt is being piled onto the backs of our children and grandchildren which we all know is wrong and is unsustainable. Governor Romney is a proven businessman who has the skills to lead this nation back to prosperity by providing the right conditions and eliminating the uncertainty for small businesses to create and expand jobs. His energy plan will unleash domestic production which will reduce prices at the pump and will create good paying jobs while keeping our energy dollars here at home rather than depending on foreign oil and sending hundreds of billions of dollars to foreign countries that don’t like us. When it comes to our foreign policy, Governor Romney will lead through strength and not go around the world apologizing. And last but not least, Governor Romney signed “The Thomson Presidential Pledge” and President Obama did not. My pick for New Hampshire Governor is as clear and important to me as the Presidential Election. Our state is also at a crossroads; under Democrat Maggie Hassan we would see increased taxes, fees and regulations and a very good chance of a sales and or income tax despite what she says. Republican Ovide Lamontagne not only promises to

Obama Campaign Co-Chair Eva Longoria Gets Schooled Liberal celebrities want all of the adoration that social media engagement has to offer -- but none of the accountability by Michelle Malkin t h a t a c t u a l Syndicated Columnist engagement requires. For the Hollywood elite, it’s “do as they say, not as they tweet.” But actress and outspoken Obama campaign co-chair Eva Longoria learned a hard lesson this week on Twitter: Conservatives online are mad as hell and aren’t taking it anymore. On Tuesday night after the second presidential debate, Longoria shared a “retweet” from one of her 4.4-plus million followers on the micro-blogging network. “I have no idea why any woman/ minority can vote for Romney,” the message read. “You have to be stupid to vote for such a racist/misogynistic tw*t.” (I’m editing the vulgarity for family newspapers, but the tweet’s foul reference to a woman’s reproductive organs was neither censored nor disavowed by Longoria on her Twitter timeline.) On Wednesday morning, the editors at Twitchy.com, my Twitter curation/aggregation site, captured and saved Longoria’s retweet for posterity. Conservative minorities and women raised their voices. A representative sample: Wrote Diana Yellow (@navajochic): “I don’t appreciate u call’n me stupid. Ur ignorant, selfish and stupid urself! I’m a Romney/Ryan voter, I’m female and a minority.” Becky Gonzalez (@nanabec2)

tweeted: “You can vote with your lady parts -- I’ll vote with my lady smarts. VOTE ROMNEY!!!” Melissa (@melissaDiva) responded: “So @EvaLongoria b/c I am a woman and support @ MittRomney I am stupid? Your comment is disgusting and disrespectful to women. Shame on you.” Mayelin de Villegas (@mayelinddv) informed the starlet: “I am Hispanic. I am very informed on all issues. Will be voting for Romney and proud to say it.” After Twitchy.com called attention to the Obama campaign cochair and “War on Women” propagandist’s backhanded swipe, she tried to cover her tracks by deleting the message. But Twitter and Twitchy are forever. On Thursday morning, the panicked actress launched into damagecontrol mode -- and made matters even worse. First, she claimed that “twitter (was) bugging out” and asserted that “there are things in my timeline I didn’t retweet today.” Longoria then absurdly assured followers that she was under the social media hood searching for an imaginary glitch: “Standby trying to fix!” The naked attempt to channel disgraced Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner, who shamelessly blamed a nonexistent hacker for posting lewd photos of himself on Twitter, flopped among tech-savvy Twitter users. “Blame it on A) The altitude B) The ‘video’ C) Hillary!” joked one reader. “She inherited all her re-tweets from the previous twitter user,” jibed another. “She has binders full of excuses,” chimed another. Writer Derek Hunter mused: “(Y)ou’ve got to find it amusing

Obama’s Overlooked Foreign Foibles UNITED NATIONS —As the

seemingly interminable election campaign nears the finish line, there are a few glaringly by John J. Metzler missing topics which reSyndicated Columnist main almost untouched. The first deals with an issue affecting nearly everyone and the other one which may determine America’s future scientific prowess and potential. Gasoline prices. Here we have record high prices at the pump and there’s the near deafening silence of sheep as people pay $4.25 regular and $4.57 hightest in New York.. The national average for regular now stands at $3.82. And this is ok? We are not just talking about the prices which families, soccer moms, and seniors pay to fuel up, but actually even more vexing is the price paid by the trucking industry. The transportation cost for goods and services have soared. This not only hurts American competitiveness but serves as a real deadweight to the lackluster economic recovery. And you can’t blame it all on OPEC. High taxes and rising demand are one thing. But what about the Obama Administration’s unwillingness to choose additional energy supplies from neighboring Canada? The Keystone XL pipeline would guarantee one million barrels of oil a day from Alberta to the USA. That’s an impressive amount which we have by choice forfeited. And guess who’s negotiating with our Canadian friends to buy the oil we have declined? The People’s Republic of China! In a business deal with clear strategic implications, Beijing’s state-owned CNOOC oil company has now negotiated a $15 billion bid with Canada to purchase the Calgary-based Nexen petroleum. It’s a logical business deal which Washington has probably lost, pending some last minute regulatory roadblock in Ottawa. . The geopolitical implications for the USA importing additional

oil from safe and secure Canada clearly outbalance petroleum purchases from the Middle East or Venezuela. Prices at the pump are high globally but this is not the issue, nor the excuse. The USA has genuine domestic and foreign fuel options in a path not taken by an Administration who perhaps favors higher anti-consumer energy prices as to foster battery powered autos or mass transit. Another key issue involves how the USA may fall behind in Research and Development, (R&D). The cutbacks at the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) represent a stunning setback to American science and space exploration. NASA was always about national pride, achievement and as importantly scientific vision. While the President has not shut NASA, he has clipped its wings by foolishly phasing out the manned space flight capacity. Very few countries have the capacity to safely launch manned space flight; the USA, Russia and China. Not even Europe’s impressive European Space Agency (ESA), has the capacity for manned flight. Now we are outsourcing many launches to Russia’s Soyuz rockets. Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the Moon and other Apollo astronauts blasted Obama’s cutbacks to NASA stating, “For the United States, the leading space-faring nation for nearly a half a century, to be without carriage to low earth orbit for an indeterminate time into the future destines our nation to become one of second- or even third-rate stature” Neil Armstrong who died in August at 82, had publicly opposed the Obama Administration’s program cuts as did other Apollo-era astronauts.. While NASA still boasts impressive facilities at the iconic Cape Kennedy, following the phase-out of the Space Shuttle program by Obama, the region has lost over 10,000 high paid scientific positions, precisely the type of jobs which traditionally gave America the scientific cutting edge and an enduring pride.

Random Thoughts

R a n d o m thoughts on the passing scene: Not since the days of slavery by Thomas Sowell h a v e t h e r e been so many Syndicated Columnist people who feel entitled to what other people have produced as there are in the modern welfare state, whether in Western Europe or on this side of the Atlantic. Economist Edward Lazear has cut through all of Barack Obama’s claims about “creating jobs” with one plain and inescapable fact -- “there hasn’t been one day during the entire Obama presidency when as many Americans were working as on the day President Bush left office.” Whatever number of jobs were created during the Obama administration, more have been lost. How are children supposed to learn to act like adults, when so much of what they see on television shows adults acting like children? The know-it-all smirks and condescending laughs of Vice President Joe Biden, when Congressman Paul Ryan was speaking during their debate, were a little much from an administration presiding over economic woes at home and disasters See Metzler on 30 overseas -- and being caught

in lies about both. Like Barack Obama, Joe Biden has all the clever tricks of a politician and none of the wisdom of a statesman. If you truly believe in the brotherhood of man, then you must believe that blacks are just as capable of being racists as whites are. One of the most foolish, and most dangerous, things one can do is to take love for granted, instead of nurturing it and safeguarding it as the prize jewel of one’s life. Whenever you hear people talking about “a living Constitution,” almost invariably they are people who are in the process of slowly killing it by “interpreting” its restrictions on government out of existence. Do either Barack Obama or his followers have any idea how many countries during the 20th century set out to “spread the wealth” -- and ended up spreading poverty instead? At some point, you have to turn from rhetoric, theories and ideologies to facts. I am so old that I can remember when liberals were liberal -- instead of being intolerant of anything and anybody that is not politically correct. Whatever happened to Julie Banderas of the Fox News Channel? She had brains, looks, See Sowell on 30

Fall is now in full swing and as we turn our attention to colder weather, one major concern seems to stand out for all of us, in terms of our health: the immune system. It is reasonable to be concerned about this because 1) nobody likes to feel like death warmed over and 2) who can afford to be ill? Our lives are typically packed full (overly full, in most cases) and losing time to illness causes us to fall behind at work and at home. The major way we attempt to ward off illness is by attempting to avoid contact with germs. The problem with germ avoidance as our primary protection is that it will never work. Primarily, because we can never avoid germ exposure. Germs are found everywhere: from our homes, the store, restaurants our work, outrkids and hospitals. Everything we touch: money, computer keyboards, door handles,

etc. The fact is, we get exposed daily to germs, and unless of course you are prepared to live in some sort of germ free bubble, germ avoidance as your only defense, isn’t your best bet. So, if germ avoidance isn’t going to cut it , what is our best option to face off with illness this fall/ winter? The answer, in my mind, is to preemptively, boost your immune system naturally! Before you actually get ill, make some simple lifestyle choices that will help prevent illness and boost you immunity. All of these are simple, can be done at home, and can be done for free. #1) Exercise! You don’t have to do crazy workouts, get a six pack, or run a marathon. You do have to start moving daily for 30-60 minutes, that‘s it. Walking is free, so there is no reason why we can’t do this, only excuses. Exercise is awesome for boosting mood, getting better sleep, controlling weight, boosting intelligence (seriously, see the book “Spark by John Ratey, MD), and on our topic of the day boosting your immune system! The mechanism isn’t completely understood, but from Medline Plus (part

of the National Library of Medicine/National Institutes of Health) there seem to be a few reasons: exercise may flush bacteria out of the lungs, it sends antibodies and white blood cells through the body at a faster rate, it decreases stress (stress decreases immune function), and the associated temporary rise in temperature may kill off bacteria. WebMD further notes that moderate exercise increase leukocytes (cells that help fight infection) So basically, get moving! #2)Cut sugar and fat intake. Also according to WebMD eating foods high in fat and sugar suppresses immune function, noting: “Even consuming just 75 to 100 grams of a sugar solution (about the same as in two 12-ounce sodas) reduces the ability of white blood cells to overpower and destroy bacteria. This effect is seen for at least a few hours after consuming a sugary drink. My advice: make the jump to more fruits and veggies and allow your immune system to function at its best. #3) Control stress. Stress kills. Sounds a bit dramatic, but stress seems to not only damage your mood and your day, but your physiology and your immune function. Get the best of stress for once, by finding a passion, making time for yourself, learning to say “no so you have more free time, having daily prayer/meditation, or silent time. We have to create stress free times, so that we can be healthy. In the end, science can continue to advance, but there’s always a cost to putting artificial things in your body, in my opinion. Germs will always be present. The truth, to me, is this: the only thing you can control is yourself. Stack the deck in your favor by making healthy choices daily and giving yourself the best chance to be happy, healthy, and hopefully, illness free this year.

Free Cancer Resource Guides Help Patients Navigate Cancer Journey When Barbara George’s friend and colleague in the media business was diagnosed with a recurrence of breast cancer 11 years ago, George volunteered to help her figure out her next steps. But what they did not find surprised them. “We thought, here we are as marketers and we’re having trouble finding needed resources in our community. What difficulties might others also be having? says George of Kansas City, Mo. “We were looking for resources - like wig shops, local support groups and even local physicians - but finding them was proving to be time-consuming and unsuccessful. It was really frustrating. The two women started researching local resources for people living with cancer. They felt strongly that a comprehensive, local resource guide filled with cancer information for the newly diagnosed could truly help others on their cancer journey. They collaborated with George’s friend’s doctor at the University of Kansas Cancer Center to make this a reality. In 2001, George created Cancer Matters, a grassroots, community-

based initiative, aimed at tackling this information gap that faced individuals living with cancer and their loved ones. She developed the Cancer Matters Resource Guides, free booklets featuring a comprehensive listing of local cancer-related businesses and services. Resources include cancer support groups, hospital services, home health and more. They also provide tips for the newly diagnosed and information on health and wellness. “The beauty of these guides is that they are local, comprehensive and were developed by some-

one who has walked in your shoes, says George. “I am hopeful that in the future, we can bring Cancer Matters to all cities across the nation. These comprehensive resource guides are available in 35 U.S. cities. The guides are updated and distributed annually to local hospitals, physician’s offices, nonprofit organizations and support groups. They are also available online at CancerMatters.com or by calling 913-385-7332. Cancer Matters is supported by Lilly Oncology. Lilly Oncology does not control the content of the resource guides or website.

The view south over Winnipesauke all the way to Gunstock was worth all the effort of the hike. We are so lucky to be able to experience a perfect fall day on a beautiful pristine mountaintop. Even my nose was delighted by the strong Christmas tree fragrance from balsams that lined the summit clearing. The hike over to Mt Shaw’s summit required another mile of strolling up the old carriage roads.

ing a little cap of clouds, all over a huge expanse of tree covered undeveloped territory. There are lots of little ponds and a few big ponds below us too. Charlie and I bundled up with our winter jackets and hats. The crisp air cooled our bodies very quickly. We sat on the log bench at the edge of the clearing facing the astounding landscape. We lingered a long while slowly munching our P&J sandwiches and snapping into fresh juicy apples. As we were packing up to leave, the group with the three young daughters arrived and there was much chatter as the girls hunted for the summit sign. They quickly assembled for a group shot to celebrate summiting another “52 with a View” peak. We wished them well and we went on our way. (I believe that this group included the author of UP, a memoir of hiking with her very young daughter, Trish Herr and of course her daughters). Charlie is a good sport. Away from the carriage road the trail was well blazed but it was heavily blanketed with fresh fallen fall leaves and we had to be very cautious how we stepped. We savored the stroll down the mountain through the bare trees and the sound of the rustling leaves through our legs was the only sound we heard. Again the old route matched the description in my old guidebook and we made it down to a road passable by cars. Since we didn’t spot a car we took a shortcut via a snowmobile

Once again I wished I didn’t break our rule about leaving our car at the end of the trail. An antique Mercedes drove by us so slowly I was sure we were going to get a free ride but no. Our Story The Weirs Times was first published in 1883 by Mathew H. Calvert. The newspaper, then named Calvert’s Weirs Times and Tourists’ Gazette, was published until Mr. Calvert’s death in 1902. One of the most remarkable features of the publication was a map of Lake Winnipesaukee which occupied the center spread of the paper. Readers will find the same map reprinted on the center pages of this, and every issue. The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain

Money, Freedom and Economic Future of our Families To The Editor: I am looking forward to the election on November 6th. Not only for the Presidential aspect but also for Gilford. This election year Gilford is combined with Meredith for four representatives to the legislature. While Gilford has one Republican running, Meredith has three. A candidate whom I will be supporting to represent Gilford and Meredith is Kevin Leandro. Kevin serves on the Gilford Budget committee and as many of us know, works diligently to assure taxpayers their money is spent wisely. Kevin’s common sense approach of accountability in Town government will be an asset when serving in the legislature. He has a keen interest in making certain the state fulfills its obligation in funding education and committing the proper funding for the handicap and disabled. He also advocates for lowering business taxes in an effort to retain existing businesses and attracting new ones. If elected he is committed to working with the State’s transportation and energy bureau in developing goals for new energy resources. These are not new ideas but fresh ideas. Ideas that will move NH forward! On November 6th, do not let fear and emotion overcome logic. Let us vision a sound and stable economic environment

for the State and vote for Kevin and the three Republicans from Meredith. Remember, the Democrats running for the same office have no vision for the future but more of the same they left us with three years ago-- higher fees, more taxes and hundreds of millions in deficit spending. In my opinion, Kevin will protect your Money, your Freedom and the Economic Future of your Families. George Hurt Gilford, NH.

Sheriff For Forrester To The Editor: Senator Jeanie Forrester has been a true breath of fresh air. She’s a leader, not a politician and she always, always follows through – giving us straight, honest answers. Jeanie has made it her mission to know as much as she can about the new towns that are now part of District 2 (Wilmot, Hill, Danbury, Grafton, and Tilton). She’s taken the time to visit with me to learn about the work I do. Jeanie has actively engaged law enforcement— attending legislative briefings, seeking input on legislation and doing all she can to better understand and represent law enforcement. She’s also visited the Merrimack County Nursing Home, been in the local parades, held events to meet voters, and knocked on hundreds of doors in the new towns. I have no doubt that the

the patriotic spirit of its predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Cocheco Valley area with the new Cocheco Times. Locally owned for over 20 years, this publication is devoted to printing the stories of the people and places that make New Hampshire the best place in the world to live. newest communities to District 2 will receive the same active attention that all the other communities have received from Jeanie in the last two years. I hope you will join me in supporting Jeanie as your Senator and vote for her in the November 6th election. Scott Hilliard

Merrimack County Sheriff

Northfield, NH.

For Ovide To The Editor: I’m a simple person, but have never forgotten where my roots come from. Ovide M. Lamontagne came very close in the last election for U.S. Senator from NH. In the final hours he lost his bid to represent the people of New Hampshire in the United States Senate. Credit to her, Kelly Ayotte has done and continues to do an exemplary service in representing the citizens of our state as your U.S. Senator. But in my heart Ovide would have risen to the task in equal measure. He now seeks your trust as he campaigns for the office of Governor of New Hampshire. His goodness, genuine concern for all of the people, and his firm grasp on the issues of importance that face our state, qualify him as a true leader who can put us back on course for a better tomorrow. His sincerity and capability to lead our great state have never been in question. His only obligation in life is to be fair and balanced with the people. I wholeheartedly endorse him as our next governor of New Hampshire. We the people deserve no less. Larry Pelland, Concord, NH.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

War On Men

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

I’m tired of hearing about this war against women; as far as I’m concerned, there’s been a war against men in this country for years and no one ever talks about it. And it has been waged by women. We here all this blah, blah, blah everyday that women in this country are being discriminated against. Give me a break! Women have never had it so good; all at the expense of men. It seems men have caved into women on everything, even when we shouldn’t have. Take beer for example. I never knew any women who actually liked beer; it was a man’s domain. We men learned to like it when we were younger. Our fathers and uncles introduced it to us as a rite of passage. We didn’t like the taste of it at first, but we knew that we had to endure it; it was a part of becoming a man. Women were busy with their green crème de menthes and their chardonnays, but we men held our ground and imbibed on beer after beer. Then women wanted in on the action. We didn’t want to taste their green crème de menthe, we were happy to leave them to their own. But then women’s lib came along and suddenly they were screaming foul. “How come there is no beer for women?!â€? They

screamed. So, the beer companies caved in before any lawsuits developed and soon the market was flooded with low-calorie beers. But we men stood idly by, afraid to speak up lest we be considered heartless. But it didn’t stop there. Suddenly, low calorie wasn’t good enough; now they wanted beer that was not only less filling but made up for the sweetness they were missing from their green crème de menthes. So companies started making flavored beer. FLAVORED BEER!! We men were horrified but we once again sat idly by and watched as our rite of passage beverage soon got lost on the shelves amidst a sea of beers that would have made our grandfathers turn in their graves. Too many of us men have meekly embraced these tasteless light beers and strawberry ales, just to keep the peace. Some of us have even, without admitting it, enjoyed them. Even President Obama is encouraging the war on men by claiming to prefer light beer. I think all men should consider this when they step into the voting booth. Women have won this battle. Women also complain about the rights to control their own bodies. They certainly don’t feel the same way when it comes to men. We are shunned when we sprout large beer bellies or forget to shave for a couple of days. A guy can’t even walk around with a bad comb over without some woman talking about him behind his back. I won’t even get into ear hairs. These are our bodies and we believe it is up to us to make decisions regarding them. Still, wives, girlfriends and mothers

insist on having the final say and they usually get their way. We aren’t even safe when it comes to the clothes we put on our own bodies. No matter what she wears we always say she “looks nice (well, she usually does). But when we head out for a Friday night wearing that old college sweatshirt and work jeans, do we ever get a “looks nice? Just another battle they have come out on top of in this one-sided war. I won’t even get into this new sensitivity training where women are always telling us men “it’s okay to cry. This just makes me sad. Over the years women have realized more and more their power over us men and they often go out of their way to make it obvious. Who can forget the famous ad for that deodorant that claimed “Strong enough for a man but made for a woman. What a taunt! We men should have taken to the streets and protested that men should be able to have the same. But we knew that it would be useless, that there never would be a deodorant strong enough for a woman but made for a man. So, I’m not buying this whole war on women thing; I think they’ve got it pretty good. So, I’m just going to sit back, pop the top on my high calorie beer, pull up my T-shirt and scratch my beer belly. Don’t look for any tears from me. Let’s Make Obama-Biden One-Termers DIETRICH BONHOEFFER: “Si-

lence in the face of evil is itself evil. God will not hold us guiltby Niel Young less. Not Advocates Columnist to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act. Bonhoeffer, a German Lutheran pastor, theologian, anti-Nazi resistant, and founding member of the Confessing Church, and famous for his stand against ADOLPH HITLER and the Nazi party. His beliefs and convictions ultimately cost him his life in a Nazi concentration camp (DBonhoeffer.org). Again, I remind you that this is not the time to remain on the sidelines. Jackie from New York worked with others at the Concord Republican Headquarters last week. She enjoyed working with NH folks, and increased the numbers reading this column, and listening to my radio program. Lisa called Jackie a “gem – and my listeners concur. ******** Not much time left before we as a nation decide who will lead us for the next four years. If we ever needed “change it is now. NIXON would have been voted out. GERRY FORD was voted out. JIMMY CARTER after one term was voted out. GEORGE H.W. BUSH gone in one. You and I can point to a major reason they were given only one term. In a time we really needed a leader it was four years ago. The GOP candidate (JOHN MCCAIN) would not fight for the job. A young fellow who shouted a lot, promising hope and change, and “social justice was given a chance to prove himself worthy of being elected our president was now in charge, and I do mean, in charge! I admire a “take charge leader,

but Obama really believes that nobody should challenge his wisdom. “I’m the President he would proclaim. His rage within against WHITE AMERICA could not be contained. OBAMA’S comment about “bowling a SPECIAL OLYMPICS score with one of his late night TV buddies did not sit well with me. What an uncaring, disgraceful insult! Oh yes, I remember your early arrival to the national scene, and to the White House, BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA. This time we have MITT ROMNEY who is fighting for the position of truly leading and bringing the U.S. back to prominence in the world standings. MITT ROMNEY and PAUL RYAN are not empty suits, as is the case now with OBAMA-BIDEN. ******** There are others who are ready to serve as representatives of the people. Two years ago NH voters knew we needed a congressman from District 1 who would represent us, not Obama. FRANK GUINTA was unknown to many of us, but we knew CAROL SHEAPORTER after two terms and we fired her! Frank finished at the top of the group of excellent GOP primary contenders. He may have had a couple of decisions some of us did not support, but overall, we do not need to return to the days of a screaming Liberal who would not listen to anyone from our side. I refer once again, to the evening in the darkness when Shea-Porter slid into the Laconia City Hall parking lot, and was dropped at a side door, and without a word or wave, entered City Hall. As I recall, my homemade sign read: “DON’T PUNISH MY GRANDCHILDREN. ********* Obama has given the Looney Liberals the go-ahead to disregard the laws. In this case; BOB BECKEL and TOM HANKS. They

I am speaking of the FIREFIGHTERS seeking seats in the NH House, one here in my hometown of Laconia. This has happened in Hampton, Manchester and Hooksett that I am aware of. Most of them want to be members of the Labor Committee. Legislation they plan to kill is any form that would allow nonunion employees to work in their area at the municipal portion of your city/town budget. That would be the Right to Work bill. These representatives of the people want to make sure that laws regarding PENSIONS will always be paid by taxpayers, and they will not diminish the hours, the shifts and their “rightsâ€?. Militant town/municipal/ county and state employees seem to find a way of serving or attending rallies during their working hours. A legislator receives $100 per year, plus mileage. Why do they want to do that, while they are still employed? Who fills their slot when serving? Do taxpayers cover the costs for the substitute? The session is from January into June. That is a lot of time away from the job. Most people in the private sector do not have this luxury.

—OFF THE SHELF— The Reluctant Reader by Debby Montague Entertainment Correspondent

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Stieg Larsson, Knopf, 2008 A Noble Radiance, Donna Leon, William Heinemann (United Kingdom), 1998; Penguin Books, 2003 I’m often a reluctant reader. My brother-inlaw knows a book I’ll just love. The librarian tells me I must read it, everybody likes it. My friend recommends something right up my alley. Often my tendency is to politely say, “Oh, yes. I must read that, and then for whatever obscure reason I decide that I won’t like the book, and I put it on the back burner or forget about it. Someday I’ll learn. In the past couple of months two books that had been recommended to me, and which I’d rejected, proved that it doesn’t pay to say, “I don’t like frogs legs, until I try some. A few years back my local librarian had given me the “You’ve got to read this line about Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I consented politely and muttered to myself on the way home. What attracts me to a book could be the author, the characters, the subject matter and locale, or that it’s part of a series that I like. My reluctance over Larsson’s book could have been the setting or my presumed assumption that the characters would be unsympathetic. What do I know about Sweden, except that it’s cold, and the language looks impossible to spell much less speak? If I was unfamiliar with the location how could I get lost in the story? Or it might have been some dull Swedish mysteries I saw on PBS that put me off. No matter, I’d decided I could live without reading The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo no matter how highly recommended. Then I changed my mind.

I was talking books with a friend of mine, and I asked him what he’d been reading lately. He mentioned a few books, but he said the one he liked the best was The Girl With The Dragon

Tattoo. Call it destiny or a change a change of heart; I had the book on my Nook the next day.

Mikael Blomkvist, the hero of the story, is an investigative journalist and part-owner of “Millennium, a political and financial magazine. As the story opens Mikael has been found guilty of libel in regard to a story he wrote about a billionaire business man, Hans-Erik Wennerstrom. Facing three months in jail and a

big fine Mikael is not having a happy Christmas. He’s approached by an agent of Henrik Vanger, the retired CEO of a huge Swedish industrial firm to write a biography of the vast Vanger family. What Henrik really wants, however, is for Mikael to investigate the forty year-old disappearance of his great-niece, Harriet. Lisbeth Salander, the girl with the dragon tattoo, is a ward of the state and recently assigned to a vicious amoral guardian. Lisbeth works – when she feels like it – for a security firm as a research and surveillance computer expert. As Mikael delves into the Vanger family history and Harriet’s disappearance he decides he needs help, and he and Lisbeth team up. The more I read The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo the more I wondered what was wrong with me for having put off reading it so long. It was fast, complicated, thrilling and mysterious, definitely a book right up my alley. A friend of mine, aware of my love affair with mysteries, dropped A Noble Radiance by Donna Leon at my office one day a few months back. I looked at the cover, looked at the blurb on the back, read the title again, and decided I was in no rush to read it. A Noble Radiance – it sounded like a romance novel, something I had gotten over in my twenties. And this one was set in Italy, a place that, though appealing, I had no real familiarity with. Then fate stepped in again, and I needed something to read while I sat at the hair salon waiting for the dye to set, and I brought the book along figuring that even if I hated it, it would pass the time. I didn’t hate it at all. Instead I kept on reading it when I should have been doing other things. Far from a hoop-skirt romance A Noble Radiance is both a cold case and a current See montague on 18

case mystery set in Venice in the 1990’s. The remains of the kidnapped son of the wealthy and noble Lorenzoni family has been found in a field, and Commissario Guido Brunetti takes charge in finding the kidnapper and/or killer. Hampered by the passage of time, the feelings of the noble Lorenzoni family, the preening and posturing of his superior Brunetti is not deterred. He has good detectives to work with and the very able assistance of the Questura secretary. Brunetti is not only a careful and thorough detective; he’s also a kind man to his family, his co-workers, and the victims. I found myself liking and respecting the man a few pages in. As a mystery the book is very satisfactory with clues and twists and seeming deadends, plenty to keep me turning the pages. And the moral of this story is the old adage “you can’t judge a book by its cover. But I suppose I’ll be a reluctant reader again. My mother will insist that Sacagawea’s biography is something I can’t live without reading. Barnes and Noble will tweet me daily insisting that they’ve found the best books for a customer like me. My niece will drop off a murder mystery assuring me that detectives are nearly as good as Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin. I’ll politely demur until the time is ripe.

to Sig Sauer in 2007 as it reflects its worldwide demand being the largest member of a worldwide firearms group which includes J.P. Sauer & Sohn and Blaser. Along with the move to Exeter came the creation of the Academy which encompasses 140 acres. (Actually

half is in Epping and the other half in Brentwood.) “It has changed a bit here over the years, said Sig Sauer Academy Director, Adam Painchaud who has extensive military special programs and federal law enforcement experience. Spread out across this large development are twenty different practice ranges covering many different levels of firearm training as well as six classrooms, including mobile ones, for that key ingredient to firearms use – education. A majority, about twothirds, of those who use the Academy facilities are law enforcement and military personnel. Some come for training that lasts as long as five days, some just for a day. “We also have a fair amount of international presence here at the Academy, said Painchaud. “On See sig on 20

On the civilian training side of things, which is about one-third of the people using the Academy, there are no shortcuts. “We see these people as responsible citizens,” said Painchaud. And that is the way it is approached. Not just anyone can walk in and a take a course. “Everyone needs a background check,” said Painchaud. “Or they need to produce a pistol permit or a military or police ID.” Even then, if something doesn’t seem right, they will not be allowed to continue the training. “We refuse people all the time, “ said Painchaud. The instructors at Sig Sauer are exemplary as well. There are about sixty and only about a third work at the Academy, while the others give classes around the country and the world. “All of our instructors have to have at least ten to fifteen years of law enforcement or military firearms experience,” said

Painchaud. Civilians who come for training at Sig Sauer start at the basic Handgun 101 level at which a shot is never fired, it is all classroom training. “Our number one concern is to educate civilians in how to be safe and diligent gun owners,” said Painchaud. “We are passionate about this.”

Beyond the firearms safety and handling courses, there are also tactics courses in how to survive deadly force encounters. One of the more popular is held in an abandoned and boarded up house on the grounds. Here students can use their own firearms, loaded with simunition, a nonlethal training ammuSee sig on 27

She tweeted that she was “(s)orry if people were offended by retweet” and that “I respect all Americans.” “Sorry if.” Give her the award for Worst Performance by a Self-Destructing Celeb on Social Media. Longoria topped off her faux-pology by explaining that she was merely trying to create “dialogue” and then pivoted faster than an Olympic speed skater by protesting that we should all be talking about “real issues” such as “equal pay, the economy and our health care choices” instead of “tweets.” Not so fast there, missy. You should know that Longoria is guilty of retweeting at least one other crude message bashing Republicans. Twitchy.com staff noted that on October 11, the night of the vice presidential debate, Longoria retweeted this appalling observation from soap opera star Nancy Lee Grahn: “Biden is making Paul Ryan his prison b****!” Longoria retweeted the offensive prison rape analogy without any censorship or disapproval whatsoever. And on the campaign trail, Longoria has expressed similar views disparaging conservative women. In Colorado this July, she asserted that “there is no way you can vote Republican” if you’re a woman The real issue with

“dialogue”-seeking Longoria, who refused to answer any of my questions on Twitter, is that she is a phony spokeswoman for American women outside the Hollywood-D.C.Manhattan bubble. She has unmistakable contempt for women who reject the Obama campaign’s radical “lady parts” identity politics. It is not a waste of time to respond to Hollywood hatred of conservative women and minorities. It is a waste of the First Amendment to be silent. Longoria, after all, is one of Obama’s highest-profile campaign co-chairs spearheading femme fear-mongering. She and a bevy of other like-minded lib Hollywood actresses (including Kate Walsh, Scarlett Johansson and Kerry Washington) are flooding swing states to woo independent/undecided women who could determine this election. Silence is complicity. For decades, conservative women and minorities had limited public opportunities to tell the Beautiful People that they didn’t speak for us. The game has changed. The walls have crumbled. The era of one-way political monologues from Tinsel Town hypocrites is over. To borrow language they understand: That’s a wrap. You’ve been schooled. You’re known for your honesty, so people will listen and, perhaps, begin to make long-needed changes. wit and personality. Has she met with foul play? Or has some zillionaire married her and taken her off to his own private island? The question to be asked of people in the media, and that they should ask themselves, should be: “Is your first loyalty to your audience or to your ideology? The same question should be asked of educators, especially those who see themselves as “agents of social change, even though that is not the job description under which they have been hired and paid. People who complain about “negative campaign ads miss the point. It is perfectly legitimate to criticize your opponent. The question is whether the ads are about serious things that matter to the future of this country, and whether they are telling the truth or lying. If you believe Barack Obama and others who oppose what they call “tax cuts for the rich, you might want to consider what the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan once said: “You are entitled to your own opinion, but not to your own facts. If you want to see some documented facts about tax rates and tax revenues, there is a box titled “Tax Cuts on my web site

But the highest lifetime batting average by a switch hitter (.319 by Frankie Frisch) is more than 30 points lower than the highest batting average for either left-handed hitters or right-handed hitters. The highest batting average in a season by a switch hitter (.365 by Mickey Mantle) is more than 50 points lower. If there is ever a Hall of Fame for confidence men, Charles Ponzi and Bernie Madoff will have to take a back seat to Barack Obama. Obama is the gold standard -- or, perhaps more appropriately, the brass standard. I have never known a word to become absolute dogma, without a speck of evidence, the way “diversity has. veto a sales or income tax but he was the first candidate to publicly sign the pledge, and Maggie Hassan has refused to do so. In 2008, Maggie Hassan as Senate Majority Leader supported and voted for the LLC (Limited Liability Company) Tax which was a 5% income tax on our small businesses, the same businesses that are the job creators. New Hampshire small businesses were outraged at this 5% income tax and pushed back so hard that the LLC law was repealed the following year. So when Maggie Hassan says she will veto a sales or income tax you’ll know that it is nothing more than smoke and mirrors. Don’t let Maggie Hassan fool you again. My pick for Governor is Ovide Lamontagne. My pick for the 2nd District Congressional race is incumbent Charlie Bass over challenger Anne

Have we lost the Right Stuff? Possibly. Here’s a more down to earth economic indicator. The prestigious World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Report has downgraded American business ratings for the fourth consecutive year. This barometer of global business conditions among 144 countries has indicated a slow but certain down tick in U.S. standing from number five in 2011 to seven today, or just behind the Netherlands and Germany. . In 2007 the USA ranked number one globally in this survey. Sadly, falling behind has been part of the American experience over the past four years. Not striving for exceptionalism nor searching for new horizons. Some appear content with an unremarkable status quo where rhetoric masks reality and reality becomes part of a blurred American vision. John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues.

Kuster. We cannot afford to lose this hard working Congressman whose seniority and experience in the US House confers substantial advantages to our state and nation. My pick for the 1st District Congressional race between incumbent Frank Guinta and Carol SheaPorter is Congressman Guinta (I don’t vote in District 1, but if I did I would certainly vote for this hard working conservative, Frank Guinta). I remember my father, Governor Mel Thomson, encouraging voters nearly 40 years ago to “Protect Your Pocketbook by getting out and voting. You may want to consider this the next time you fill up at the pump. On November 6th please exercise the greatest freedom we have, the right to Vote.
