PART â… NEXUS for International Trade CENTER Innovative Solution: a link for Beijing CBD Area Explore potential possibilities for Beijing CBD future development

Site: International Trade Tower PARTNER: HANYI LI TIME: Spring 2019

With the development of China, Beijing is gradually becoming one of the most popular centers in the world. And the CBD area in Beijing is also developing fast. However, there are some problems presented nowadays. One of them is that East Ring Road has divided the center into two parts, which may be the most developed area in Beijing in the future. That is not a reasonable and pleasant result. I propose a imagine thenďźšwould it be possible if we build a "bridge"upon East Ring Road, which is more like an activity center instead of merely a bridge? If so, the two seperate parts will be joined together. The link is an important element in this process.

PRESENT URBAN PLANNING

Urban designing : I focus on the problem about International Trade District that, important city centers are divided seperatedly. In the future, the connection between International Trade Center and Beijing CBD in Chaoyang District is reasonable and necessary. So I f irstly propose a possible solution for the district: a city connection above East Third Ring Road, which is also a symbol of Beijing, like the living room of the city. PRESENT SITUATION

FUNCTION BUBBLES

EXPLODED AXON http://www.emila.eu/

To build an integrated activity center above East Third Ring Road in Beijing, I rise the height of the X-shaped architecture to 30 meters high. Then I analysis the need of people in International Trade District, who are maily white collers. The function of my center can be mainly divided into f ive parts eating, buying, sporting, gathering, and watching. I divide the space into these f ive parts and set them into their specif ic places. What's more, I place an active square underground, which allows people to perform and admire other performers on the plateform. Passengers shall pass the road quickly without crossing the annoying skybridge at the street crossing. From the elevator on the underground f loor, visitors can also arrive the commercial center conveniently.

PART â…Ą Railway Museum We need a line to go through A memorial historical museum for old Beijing Railway, which has made great contribution to the city but is slowly decreasing now.......

SITE: XIZHIMEN, BEIJING , CHINA PARTNERS: ALONE TIME: Fall 2017

Museum is a non-prof itable, permanent institution open to the public for social development. For the purpose of research, education and appreciation, they collect, preser ve, research, disseminate and witness human and human environment, which require the exhibition history to be memoried Beijing is an old-traditional city with many interesting historial things to remember. Old Railway is one of them. From the 1940s, Raiway developed fast in Beijing. Up till now, old railway is about to be abandoned but their contribution to the city remains worth to be remembered. Beijing North Station lies in XIZHIMEN, but has already been changed into short-distance station. There are many examples like this. So I decide to build a railway museum to show the histor y of Beijing Railway, which reminds people never to forget what railway has done to this city , to this country.

WENQIANG WEI

10

SITE CONDITION

WATERWAY There is a river running in the north of the site, which limits the traff ic coming from north.

RAILWAY Beijing North Railway Station is beside the site, which was a transportation center before. But now it mainly supplies short-distance trains for passengers to travel.

MAIN ROAD Several main roads divide the area into regular geometry. Each geometry is consisted of several blocks. And they make up of the main traff ic system in this area

AREA BLOCK Based on the main roads, the area is made up of several blocks, which have different funtions seperatedly, offering service to the city together.

ARCHITECTURE The architecture in this area is regular and in order. Beijing North Raiway Station is the most tremendous building in this area, surrounded by many different regular blocks.

The site is beside Beijing North Railway Station. The railways branch out of the station. The museum lies besides railways. So my concept f irstly comes from the shape of the branches. Railway branches stand for power, speed, eff iciency, concise and life, which generalize the spirit of railway well. I grasp the spirit and intend to express it in my design. As the aspect of designing, I pay attention to coordinating different factors to express my design better, like concept, function, form, space, structure, materials, environment, and light. At the same time, I absorb the local cultural features, and adapt it to my design. After adjusting and coordinating, the shape of museum is like an extend of the railway, which presents that the railway will never end here and now. It will always run to make our world better. So that's why I call it "We need a line to go through "

SECONDARY ROADS Secondary roads make up of the secondly main traff ic transportation of this area, at the end of which are the main traff ic entrances of this area.

INTERNAL VIEW

The f irst f loor contains a big conference room, where 120 people can watch a movie about Beijing Railway together at the same time, rooms for workers, including a washroom, a bathroom, and a living room, and several blocks presenting the history of Beijing Raiway. To be mentioned, there is a large stair in the middle of the f irst f loor, which is a main space that I constitute on this f loor. The space of the museum is narrow, so I take the use of island layout to seperate the space.

WENQIANG WEI

FIRST FLOOR PLAN

As for the concept, I pay much attention to the creation of "shadow", which I believe is an important element in my design. The shape of my museum is long, narrow and thin. The difference of the height draws to some staggered space, which forms some interesting shadow space. Watchers can enjoy it on the f irst f loor from some angel. I hope my museum will be a mysterious, shadowy, and silent space for visitors to forget themselves inside it, and admire the shock of the space shadow.

INTERNAL VIEW

The second f loor includes blocks of characterize gallery space, which offers specif ic historical exhibition. Under dark light and in wide space, tourists are able to enjoy the exibition better in the atmosphere. There is a resting room at the end of the second f loor for tourists. And a overlook space for tourists to watch over the station 2km away to recover the station from their memory,

At the same time, I reconstruct the site. To add activity to my site, I form a square outside of my museum. I wish visitors would be willing to go out to enjoy the sunlight after visiting the museum. Having considered the trouble it may meet, I design a reasonable, succinct streamline to achive that goal.

PART â…˘ 3D-Weaving Chinese Knot Weaving Structure in National Museum An art exibition which is shown in National Museum in Beijing. It's composed of a grid shell structural system composed of continuous elastic rods bearing bending forces.

SITE: National Museum DIRECTORS: WEIXIN HUANG, YANG LIU, CHENGLIN WU TIME: Winter 2019

The 5th International Exhibition of Art and Science was grandly opened at the National Museum of China. We have completed a "3D Weaving Chinese Knot" and placed it at the core of the exhibition area. T h e w e a v i n g s t r u c t u re o r i g i n a t e s f ro m t h e combination of traditional weaving technology and modern digital technology, combines the advantages of traditional weaving rapid prototyping, uses digital technology to develop the topology of weaving, and realizes the construction of a wider range of free-form shapes. "3D Weaving Chinese Knot" is the embodiment of this scientific research result. Through the complex minimal surface shape, it shows the great potential of woven structure to achieve free curved surface.

EXIBITION

The "Fifth International Art and Science Exhibition and Academic Symposium" hosted by Tsinghua University and the National Museum and hosted by the Tsinghua University and Tsinghua Art  Science Research Center was held at the National Museum of China in November. The theme of this exhibition explores the "integration of art and science in the age of artif icial intelligence, a future-oriented, world-oriented interdisciplinary and cultural dialogue." The exhibition lasts from November 2nd to 30th, and 3-D Weaving Chinese Knot is located in the second floor of the National Museum of China

Advantages of Weaving Structure

Chinese knot surface design

The major innovation of the weaving structure lies in the construction of free-form surfaces. The structural units used are factory-produced standardized components-uniform and continuous elastic members, rather than customized special-shaped members, for the construction of free-form surfaces. This innovative construction method is derived from the weaving construction method optimized by digital technology. The complicated three-dimensional positioning process during the construction of the surface is simplified to mark the positioning on the straight rod, and then a free-form surface is formed by weaving. This dimension-reducing construction method that converts three-dimensional positioning into one-dimensional positioning is a "dimensional reduction blow" to the diff iculty of traditional freeform surface construction.

The design of the "3D Knitted Chinese Knot" adopts the super-symmetric Gyroid minimal surface form. Through the repetition, displacement and rotation of the basic unit, it can be combined into a very complicated form, and it has minimalist beauty in mathematics. The Gyriod minimal surface is composed of the most basic Gyriod triangles (gyroid-tri.fe), and it becomes more and more complicated through continuous replication.

By using standardized components, simple rod positioning and digitally guided knitting process, the construction of free-form surfaces can be achieved quickly, with high tolerance and low cost.

WENQIANG WEI

21

STRUCTURE SEPERATED

The main structure of the "3D Knitted Chinese Knot" is a sphere with a diameter of about 3.6 meters. Through modular design and assembly methods, it can reduce the diff iculty of construction and transportation caused by large scales. Utilizing the symmetry of the Gryoid minimal surface, the structure is designed to be highly symmetrical. The main structure can be cut into eight basic unit modules, so that the unit modules can be pre-woven elsewhere and quickly spliced after being transported to the site. There are two types of eight unit modules, A and B. These two forms are mirrored to form A 'and B'. A and A 'each, and B and B' three each constitute all eight unit components, which can be integrated into a whole. The high degree of symmetry of the structure makes the eight unit modules only two forms, which greatly simplifies the complexity of unit module construction.

In the partially enlarged display diagram, the algorithm will transform the optimized triangular mesh into a Kagome mesh by subdividing the midpoint of the triangle, further transform it into a braided member, and calculate the position and length information of the intersection of the members . The digital algorithm calculates the numbered three-dimensional model of the member, and gives the unfolded construction chart of the member (as shown below). According to the expanded view of the member, measure, mark, and number the member, and then weave into the designed surface shape under the guidance of the digital model.

WENQIANG WEI

22

CONSTRUCT PERIOD

The production of the "3D Knitted Chinese Knot" took a total of two weeks. First, the marking of the rods and the preassembly of the unit components were performed in Dalian. We marked the rods on the right points and then cut them into proper pieces.

Then we built a system of scaffold, which exactly indicts the right position of marked rods in 3-D space.

After that, we weaved the rods and put them in the right place in space based on the scaffold. Then we connects the connecting points on the rods which are shown by the labels we have marked.

WENQIANG WEI

23

ASSEMBLE  INSTALL PERIOD

SINGLE ROD SYSTEM INSTALLATION

After transported to the Beijing National Museum, we f irstly assemble eight pieces of the whole structure and f inish the single rod system

SINGLE ROD SYSTEM INSTALLATION

The design of "3D Weaving Chinese Knot" is highly combined with knowledge in many f ields such as mathematics, computer graphics and building structure. The material used for the weaving structure is a continuous elastic rod, which adopts the structural principle of Bending Active, and the structural deformation is always within the elastic range. The structural members are made by bending, connecting, and weaving elastic rods. After the exhibition, after the removal of the rods, they can spring back to a straight line, return to the original state, reassemble in another place or be used by other structures, so as to achieve multiple uses of materials. It is a green and environmental-friendly structure.

Then we add the second layer of rods to the single rod system, which together with the f irst layer forms the double-rod system. After that, we install joints to the connecting points of rods

WENQIANG WEI

24

THE CONNECTING JOINTS

In order to achieve exquisite results, the material of "3D Woven Chinese Knot" uses customized red FRP rods. The design of double-row members increases the reliability of the structure and shows the exquisite structural nodes. The work uses customized aluminum nodes as the hinged links between the continuous members, while positioning the members while ensuring the freedom of the members in the shear direction. The transmission of the bending moment of the braided structure is guaranteed, so that it has the characteristics of self-finding and self-forming.

PART â…Ł Youth Hostel a fancinating space to watch stars Is there a place for people to forget all the miserables, troubles about life just to relax themselves by watching stars? That's here!

SITE: OUTSIDE TSINGHUA WEST GATE PARTNERS: ALONE TIME: Winter 2016

Youth hostel is a young and active traveling style that is popular all over the world, which is suitable for traveling young teenagers. The price is cheap and the atmosphere is friendly. Here you can make lots of friends. So I imagine such a place : After a long day's trip, young teens walk into the same youth hostel. They don't know each other, but they star t to communicate after they meet at the hostel lobby. They sing, dance and have dinner together. At night, they may even climb onto the roof of the hostel, lie down and watch the stars, talk to each other and look back on all the happy memories that have happened during the trip.......

SITE PLAN

Roof

Third Floor The site is surrounded by three secondary main roads of Beijing, which makes the site an unprivate space inside. So I choose to take the use of a complete volume to seperate a piece of private space from surrounding environment, which forms an interface inside the site. What's more, The roof is an important part in my design. Many activities happen on the roof among teenagers. And the roof is also the f ifth elevation of the hostel. So as for the specif ic operation, I cut a bevel towards the east, and set two big stairs onto the roof. Young teens are able to gather on the roof and stories happen there. Besides, the roof can also serve as a city interface, contributing to the beauty of the city.

PART â…¤ Parking tower a revolution for parking mode It's an exploration for varible parking modes , which I hope can solve the existing problem of parking problems in Beijing.

PARTNERS:ALONE TIME: Summer 2017

With the development of China, Beijing has already had a population of over twenty million and over five million vehicles run on the road in Beijing everyday. More than ten million bicycles are possessed by Beijing inhabits. Ever yday a problem will trouble us: It's diff icult to park bikes. Too much population, too many bicycles and vehicles have caused serious traffic problems. However, there are not suff icient methods to deal with these problems, so I intend to propose a proposal dealing with bicycle parking problems, which is called Bicycle Parking Tower. By proposing a new mode, I hope to explore a possibility to help dealing with the traff ic problems in Beijing.

PROBLEM  SOLUTION

EXPLODED AXON

The problems for bicycle parking are complexed, but roughly they can be submited into two parts: space-wasting and complexed parking flow. Firstly I seperated people who park the bicycles and those who pick bicycles. Their flows are seperated strictly so that we can ensure they'll not affect each other when they park or get the bicycles. Then, I take the use of the space upon the ground. Parking or getting the bicycles will not waste the space on the ground. On the other hand, they can be used as aisles or gardens to return green to the city. ELEVATION
