Foreword

“For as long as space endures, and for as long as living beings remain, until then may I too abide to dispel the misery of the world.” Shantideva I first met Kenro Izu around 1995. Of course I knew and greatly admired the depth and beauty of his extraordinary photographs, especially the Angkor Wat series. We started talking cameras and platinum printing, but the conversation moved quickly to his real passion – the children of Cambodia. He invited me to come by a “little auction” he was putting together to raise funds to build a children’s hospital in Cambodia near the Angkor Wat Temples. Well, this “little auction” wasn’t so little and got less “little” each year until miraculously – the Angkor Hospital for Children was built in 1999. With the help and dedication of thousands of international supporters, Angkor hospital has treated over 850,000 children and is recognized by the Ministry of Health as an official teaching hospital – the largest in Cambodia. It has trained thousands of healthcare and N.G.O. workers throughout Cambodia and beyond. Today, an average of 400 children and their families arrive at the hospital every day. Years of civil war, external occupation and poor government have left Cambodians struggling. Around 40% of Cambodians are forced to make ends meet on less than $1.25 US per day. Sadly, it’s the children who feel the most brutal consequences of poverty. Many Cambodian children are malnourished, few attend secondary school and thousands die each year of preventable and treatable disease. Angkor Hospital for Children’s place in the community is so desperately needed. New York’s photographic community – photographers, dealers, collectors, and curators – have each played a huge role in the building of Angkor Hospital for Children and its ongoing success. So many fragile lives have been saved and strong cultural bridges have been built. This is something we should all be enormously proud of – that all of these “little” things have added up to become some very big things…if we care – if we act together. Please continue to generously support Friends Without A Border and its projects in Cambodia…it’s made a real big difference in the lives of Cambodia’s precious little children.

AHC LOOKING FORWARD

Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) opened in Cambodia 11 years ago with the goal that every child would reach the age of 5—an ambitious objective in a country where, in 1997, 1 out of 7 children died before the age of 5. Today, it is 1 out of 12—a result of prompt and effective treatment combined with education of families on nutrition and preventive health management. The number of pediatric treatments provided in 1999 was 17,598. In 2009, that number exceeded 124,000. AHC established the first pediatric HIV treatment program outside the capital, Phnom Penh, and it remains the largest hospitalbased HIV/AIDS facility in the country. AHC’s Medical Education Center is nationally recognized and has gained international attention, as healthcare professionals within and beyond Cambodia receive training at AHC. We are proud to announce another accomplishment of our dedicated staff at AHC. In February 2010, AHC’s premiere Satellite facility opened in Sot Nikum district. The Satellite is approximately 20 miles from Angkor Hospital for Children and is the pediatric unit of Sot Nikum Referral Hospital combining AHC standards and care with the government healthcare system. The Satellite features comprehensive outpatient pediatric staff and equipment, an emergency room, and a 20-bed inpatient department. The AHC Satellite resulted from a survey which revealed that a considerable number of the families who arrive with their sick children at the doors of AHC had traveled 20 miles or more from Sot Nikum district and beyond. They had bypassed other clinics and hospitals along the way to ensure that their children would receive AHC’s reputable care. While many were fortunate to arrive and receive treatment, too many other children were not able to weather the distance and rigors of such travel in their fragile states. The new Satellite, in collaboration with a government hospital, is already a gratifying success and could well serve as a model for replicating the standard of care and treatment for which AHC is so highly regarded at other locations throughout Cambodia.

Kenro Izu’s initial vision of providing quality and compassionate healthcare in Cambodia has evolved into a standard that is esteemed throughout the country…and well beyond its borders. So many people from so many places have cheered for and supported this cause, especially those from the photography and art community. Their support is crucial to AHC’s success and makes this annual Friends of Friends Photography Auction a great reality and important financial resource for Angkor Hospital for Children. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the photographers, galleries, and collectors who have made a contribution to the 14th Annual Friends of Friends Photography Auction. We also thank our generous sponsors who provided essential support, the committee members who have given so much of their energy and knowledge to our event, and, of course, everyone who attends the auction. All of you make the great story that is AHC even more inspiring.

Ushering this growth of AHC into the new decade is the amazing staff of AHC. By 2010, 11% of the staff has served at AHC for over 10 years and Cambodians make up 97% of the total employees at AHC. These students of yesterday have progressed to become today’s leaders and teachers of tomorrow’s generation.

How to place absentee and phone bids Even if you are not able to physically attend the 14th annual Friends of Friends Photography Auction on December 7, 2010, you will be able to bid on photographs and books by filling out the absentee/ phone bid form and mailing or faxing it to Friends Without A Border by December 7, 3:00pm. The auctioneer will accept bids from those present at the auction in addition to absentee and phone bids. Live bids may be executed lower than the top bid you place. If matching bids are entered by two or more parties, the first bid received by Friends will take precedence. Friends staff, Board Members and volunteers may bid at the auction for themselves, or they may execute bids for absentees. Absentee and phone bids must be submitted with valid credit card information in advance. In the case that the absentee bid is successful

the credit card will be charged on the night of the auction. Placing an absentee bid is considered authorization for this transaction. To place a phone bid, please indicate this on your bid form. Please note that phone bids can be placed only for live lots, and that volunteers helping with phone bids cannot facilitate placing bids on silent lots. You must provide us with a phone number where you can be reached the night of the auction, Tuesday December 7, 2010 from 6pm to 8:30pm EST, and the lots that you are interested in bidding on. In case of any problem with phone lines, we advise you to provide emergency bids on the form. You will be contacted one hour before your first lot will be auctioned and you will be bidding live via telephone with other bidders during the live auction.

Important Notice Admission and paddle number for the auction is $50. Payment by check or cash is preferred. Those who order the special print by Brian English, available for $500, would be entitled to a free admission. Payment for all work is due the night of the auction without exception. All property is “as is.” Neither Friends Without A Border nor the artist makes any express or implied warranty or representation as to the condition of any lot offered in the auction, and no statement made at any time, whether oral or written, shall constitute such a warranty or representation. Descriptions of condition are not warranties. Accordingly, all lots should be viewed personally by prospective bidders to evaluate

the condition of the property offered in the auction. Please feel free to contact Friends for a report on the condition of any prints. Be reminded that each lot is “as is” and all transactions are final. Unless a lot is identified as part of a limited edition, no edition limit should be assumed. Unless a lot is identified as having been printed in a certain year, no date of printing can be guaranteed. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer will obtain the item: in the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer will have final discretion and his record shall be binding and conclusive. If the auctioneer decides that any opening bid is below the value of the article offered, he may reject the bid and withdraw the article from the auction.
