Secret Landscapes of Flowers volume II Barbara Bordnick The first volume of Barbara Bordnick’s photographs of flowers, Searchings: Secret Landscapes of Flowers, was published in 2003 to widespread critical acclaim and resulted in exhibitions at Caelum Gallery (New York City), East End Books (Easthampton, NY), the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens (New York City), the Cleveland Botanical Gardens, the Modernbook Gallery (Palo Alto, CA), and the Pacific Center for Photographic Arts (Emeryville, CA). In this sequel— Searchings: Secret Landscapes of Flowers, volume II—Bordnick continues her uniquely intimate examination of a world of infinite variety and beauty. Each photograph is a revelation of form, color, and, not surprisingly, mood. What started for Bordnick as an exploration of the landscapes of flowers has evolved into a journey through the peaks and valleys not only of their forms, but of her own emotions. The resulting images are enthralling portraits that are both powerful and delicate, tumultuous and serene.

Includes 80 full-color plates

To Madison, Alyssa, Zachary, and Lauryn And my brother Paul This bouquet is for you.

I began my journey down the garden path with Searchings, the first volume in this series of intimate flower portraits. Awakened to a world of color and shape, sensuousness and beauty, I was enchanted and intoxicated by these previously unseen secret landscapes. As I spent more time in this new universe, the mystery continued. I began to see the flowers as acquaintances. They became playful, haughty, gossipy, gaudy, sometimes even frightening— revealing creatures that were living incredibly complex lives, completely indifferent to appearing ‘beautiful’ to the human eye. Even after making hundreds of portraits, I never tire of them. With each flower I encounter the journey unfolds, illuminating ever deeper layers of intimacy. —Barbara Bordnick, New York City , January 2004
