And just like that, this is the last Welcome Home Winter Texan of the season! It has been a wonderful winter, and we have enjoyed sharing it with you!
Y ou probably don’t know this about me, but I was a cheerleader. Not a real one, but I grew up watching my dad play softball. He was on the Palmer Steel team, and the players and their families became close friends. The softball kids, as we were called, ran wild and jeered the opposing teams. We’d eat snow cones and hot dogs and dare each other to yell things like, “We want a pitcher not a belly itcher.” We would go on family vacations to float the Frio River. The softball wives had graduation parties when the kids, like me, graduated from high school. There were wedding parties when the softball kids got married, and those led to baby showers.
I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to stick around, to extend your stay for a few days, weeks, months... or even indefinitely! The fun keeps coming; we keep dancing, dining, and having fun all summer long, and we’d love to have you join us.
If you feel you must go, I’d like to invite you to help us spread the word about South Texas to everyone you meet along the way and those you see every day back home. Invite them to join you next season! We would love to have them join us. The more the merrier!
Put Me In, Coach!
This September, we will host our second, not so annual (thanks to the pandemic), Winter Texan Reunion Tour, so we’d also like to invite you to join us at one of our stops. Stay tuned as we announce our travel plans.
Men’s softball changed my life in so many ways. We made memories and friendships to last a lifetime. I’m proud to support the work of Ed Martens and the Ed Martens Senior Texan Softball League, in honor of my dad and the entire Palmer Steel softball family.
It has been a real pleasure to serve you this year. We will work throughout the summer months on all of our programming so next season will be even better than this one!
Safe travels, Y’all! •
We’re connecting the dots…•
O ne morning in late December, ballplayers gathered at McAllen’s West Side Softball Complex-stretching, lunging, and swinging bats, but mostly chatting as they awaited the arrival of Ed Martens.
Martens is a legend among this group. He’s touted as the founder of the Senior Texan Softball League. In its 31st year, the League is undergoing a name change, a surprise gift for its founding member.
Murmurs begin to rise when Martens is spotted walking up the tree-lined entry to the park. Donning
a League ball cap and windbreaker, he makes his way toward the crowd. A few break away from the group to greet him, offering a word, shaking his hand, and patting him on the back.
After a few more greetings, he’s directed to a chair near the concession stand that sits between the softball fields. As he sits, the ballplayers begin to gather behind him.
Dave Duncan, a winter visitor from Concord, New Hampshire, begins to address the crowd of about 40. This isn’t a typical morning for the League, which plays Mondays
through Thursdays, November into early March. Today is different.
Martens is being honored by the City of McAllen Parks & Recreation Department and his peers, not only for creating the League but for managing it, almost solely the majority of its existence.
It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating the long-awaited return of so many of our friends. Now, here we are bidding you farewell and safe travels. All of us at Welcome Home RGV look forward to your return. Plans are
Martens made his way to the Rio Grande Valley from Minnesota at the invitation of friends, making Bentsen Grove Resort in Mission a winter getaway for the next three decades.

Story and Photos by Eryn Reddell Wingert
He played baseball in the Air Force during the Korean War. When it was suggested he start a softball league, Martens relays, his initial response was, “I know baseball. I don’t know softball,” and that he was told, “It’s no big deal--just a different ball.”
So he built the program from the ground, up, his wife, Mary, serving as bookkeeper, and starting with three RV park teams: Tip O Texas and Tropic Star--both in Pharr--and Bentsen Grove. “He knew everybody’s name and what positions they played,” Duncan shares.
The League played in Mission and Edinburg before finding a
permanent home in McAllen. “These are the best fields in the Valley,” says Martens. Duncan adds the support from the McAllen Parks and Recreation Department has been tremendous, maintaining the fields and providing umpires for the games.
When it was first implemented, the 55+ (“Or near there,” says Duncan) League was primarily made up of winter visitors but opened to the whole Valley soon after. Today it’s made up of approximately 40 percent locals and the rest from Midwest states and Canada.
In early March, the League puts on a U.S. vs. Canada game. It’s one of Martens’ favorite things

At 91, Martens no longer plays the sport, and a few years ago, he recruited a committee to take the helm. While he has given up the game, he continues to show up to support the players.
That special morning in December, Duncan formally announced to an unsuspecting Martens, “We’ve changed the name of the League to the Ed Martens Senior Texan Softball League.”
Additionally, he was presented with a plaque by the City’s Parks & Recreation Department in recognition of his 31 years of dedication, service, hard work, and countless contributions to the softball program.
The Ed Martens Senior Texan Softball League hosts two games starting at 9:00 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays. These games run through February at Westside Park and Field, 1000 S. Ware Rd. in McAllen. The 55+ co-ed League is open to all skill levels. The cost is $60 per person, which includes the full season and a League t-shirt. For more information, contact Dave Duncan at (603) 496-7951. “It’s been my pleasure. I’ve never met such great people in all my life…” Martens said, his voice cracking slightly as tears appear, “… as I have in softball.” •

Faith in the Valley
By Alden “Ace” Moore, Winter Texan at Palm Resaca Park
When Pastor John Berglund and his wife, Debbie, retired in 2020, they were going to go to Penang, Malaysia, to volunteer at a large Christian school. (Penang has been described by the British as “the jewel of Asia.”)
But COVID hit, and their plans changed. John decided to let God lead him to another place where his services would be useful. The Berglunds also wanted to find someplace warm to get out of the cold Iowa winters, so they came to the Rio Grande Valley, where they discovered Palm Resaca Park. John is now the pastor of the Park.
John’s road to becoming a pastor was not an easy one. He was into drugs in his teenage years and had a near-fatal car accident when he was just 16.
“I felt like I was being swept in and realized that I needed to change my life,” he said.
That’s when John turned to Christ. He went to the Moody Bible School in Chicago, where he earned his degree. (G.L. Moody was the Billy Graham of the 1800s.) Even then, he wasn’t ready to settle down. He had a background in sales, so he ended up selling cars and then insurance. While he was doing this, he was also asked to preach at difference churches. After preaching 50 times in 52 weeks, it finally dawned on him that maybe the ministry was really his calling. He started at a local church in Iowa and eventually taught the Bible at a large Christian high school in Des Moines. He also taught troubled youth in a Christian summer camp.
“I realized that I could understand them and reach out and help them,” John said
For five years, he traveled the nation doing seminars for pastors. He was also on a board to help
promote Christian movies, such as The Passion of the Christ and The Chronicles of Narnia
For 16 years, John has led groups of people to the Holy Land, where they study the Bible on site. He has a group outing planned for March of 2023.
“Our life has been a huge adventure,” said Debbie. “We got to travel the world with missions.” One place she especially remembers is Myanmar, where she and John both taught.
John describes himself as “The largest Mexican in captivity.” He’s
6’4” and “200-and-none-of-yourbusiness pounds,” he says. His Mexican mother was born in a boxcar in Dallas, Texas. His dad was of Swedish decent and was born in Iowa.
“It’s funny how things work out,” said John. “I had been praying to God to find me a place to serve, and the good people of Palm Resaca had also been praying to have someone come and minister to them.”
It was only when John visited South Padre Island after doing a seminar in Mercedes that he thought, “This place is a real jewel. I would like to retire here.”
On the last day of the seminar, John found Palm Resaca Park on the internet. When he and Debbie drove over to inspect the Park, they loved everything they saw. It was neat and clean, and the people were very friendly. It was close to South Padre Island, and it was affordable. John is thoroughly enjoying his newfound “retirement”.
Park residents Deb and Dave Jacobsen were married on Valentine’s Day in our Park. “We were so honored that John was able to perform the ceremony,” said Dave. “John is a very positive speaker. I never get the feeling that he’s being judgmental. His message is always uplifting, and he accepts people for who they are.
“It was my first wedding in an over-55 park,” said John. “I have performed many memorials in senior parks, so it was such a special joy-and very upbeat--to perform this wedding ceremony.”
“I enjoy listening to his message,” said Park resident Cliff Benson. “He brings the Bible into today’s world and shows how it all fits and blends together.”
Dan and Linda Wisneski summed it up best when they said John shows he cares for people. He has a shepherd’s heart. “He is a real person who is able to relate God’s message.” •

Ya Never Know
We have had so much fun this past summer and just have to share one of the things we were putting together for y’all. Here at The Lamb’s Loom, you never know what creativity will pop up and inspire us. Well, over the summer, it was only a few swirls on a piece of paper, and Alys was off to the races! You see, we were all busy planning new areas around the shop, designing them and moving lots of yarn; ideas were flying around everywhere. One need expressed was to add a couple of new side tables. Our sweet Alys took charge and
began to draw and decorate them with flowers and butterflies. She drew and drew. Then we put out a box of markers, and as the days went on, everyone picked a flower, and the tables began to blossom.
Then that idea grew into another idea. As some of you have seen, we now have a new outside Sit-n-Knit area called Peggy’s Porch. We spent last summer putting things together for that area, but the windows just needed a little extra help. In came our very talented Alys again. So that you don’t miss out on the fun, she
has prepared two boards for all of our Winter Texan friends to color away on. You are welcome to come by to color and “chillax” on Peggy’s Porch at the same time. It really is so nice and relaxing out there, and it gets prettier every day you join us.
We’re ready to sit back and share a little Show-n-Tell with you and color a couple of windows. Ya never know what may bloom at The Lamb’s Loom.
For the rest of the year, when you aren’t here at home in South Texas, you can join us on our website at
thelambsloom.com and follow us on Facebook and Instagram. And, of course, we have lots of fun articles right here in Welcome Home Winter Texan. The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue.
We truly appreciate all of our PEGs! You can be a PEG, too! Pray. Encourage. Give. Remember, The Lamb’s Loom is not just a yarn shop; it’s a ministry and a mindset. •

Nathalie Anderson: A Quilting Angel Covering NICU Babies with Love
Submitted by Janice Teppo
W e have many angels here at Trophy Gardens, but I’d like to express special appreciation to Nathalie Anderson, one of our Winter Texans.
Prior to the pandemic, I volunteered in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the DHR Health Women’s Hospital in Edinburg. I told Nathalie about the need for blankets for babies in the NICU. Over the years, her mom has made quilts for many families in need, and Nathalie has been given the gift of quilting.
Nathalie and her husband, Maurice (Moe), knocked at my door with 100 baby quilts in 2018. They not only purchased all the material, but Nathalie put her time and love into each of these special quilts. In November 2019, her brother, Gary, also from Trophy Gardens, knocked
on my door with baby quilts from Nathalie, who was still in Iowa, in case cool weather affected us before she got here after Christmas. Then, when she and Moe arrived in the Valley, their car was full of baby quilts. They would leave necessary items behind to make sure every baby quilt she made came to the Valley to be given to our precious babies in the NICU.
Nathalie has been making her baby quilts for five years now, with a total of over 500 handmade quilts! COVID has made it impossible for folks to volunteer in the NICU, but Nathalie continues bringing her beautiful baby
quilts that truly make a difference to so many parents, knowing their babies will go home with a warm, handmade quilt. Doctors and nurses in the NICU are always amazed at Nathalie and Mo’s generosity.
Thank you so very much, Nathalie. Your special gift of quilting has left your thumbprints on our hearts. •

Iowan Unable to Come to South Texas Sends Quilt
Submitted by Pat Skye
While this beautiful RGV weather is enjoyed by many from the north, Nomi Vos of Sioux City, Iowa, must do it through the Shakespeare in the RGV Quilt Show at the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum. The traveling exhibit of 43 original wall hangings is from the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky. The contest requires all entries be original in design and be constructed by the designer.
Vos heard of the contest from a Winter Texan, Rozann Kiewel, (South Dakota and Harlingen), and was encouraged by her to try. However, the idea moved slowly as Vos continued her three-year battle with cancer. Her sister from California has traveled to be with her during her treatments; she was excited about the quilt contest and encouraged Vos to try.
The drives for chemo and radiation treatments, as well as recovery time, were their focus. However, the unexpected happened. The treatment center had a problem and was shut down for two weeks. Vos and her sister rekindled the
While being a traditional quilter and loving needle-turn appliqué, this is Vos’ first art quilt and first contest. Coming up with ideas surrounding Shakespeare was challenging, especially when you know very little about him or his works. Researching A Midsummer Night’s Dream, she focused on the forest scene, envisioning appliqued leaves and flowers. Then, with a bright shining moon in the background, the tree trunks would be silhouetted. What about a pond? Maybe even fairies floating through the trees? Glowing?
The fabrics had to be darks and lights to reflect the night and to make sure the fairies would show up. Drawings were done, and Dreamy Summer Night came into existence.
The contest required a quilt size of 24” x 40.” Another requirement was to include a traditional quilt block. Vos finally settled on a Storm at Sea quilt block and used that block to make the pond. Her quilt is classified as a landscape. (Other styles and techniques and an extensive range of interpretations of this 16th century bard and his works are in this exceptional exhibit.)
Vos’ quilt is one of 43 in this traveling exhibit representing 22 states and three countries. Judges have determined first-, second-, and third-place winners.
The traveling exhibit, New Quilts from an Old Favorite, is held every two years by the National Quilt Museum and is sponsored by Moda Fabrics and Janome sewing machines. It is underwritten locally by the RGV Museum Volunteers Association. Information about entering this contest can be found at: quiltmuseum.org/NQOF2024.
The Shakespeare in the RGV exhibit is open to the public now through March 25. Entrance is free, while a donation is appreciated. Hours are Tuesdays-Saturdays 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Sundays 1 – 4 p.m. Closed Mondays. Group tours may be scheduled by calling the Museum at 956-216-4901. The Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum is located at 2425 Boxwood in Harlingen (off Loop 499 near Valley International Airport and Texas State Technical College). •

Things I Have Learned
A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy
By Bill Ward
Sleep On It
T oday’s Wisdom: It is a common experience that a problem difficult at night is resolved in the morning after the committee of sleep has worked on it. ~John Steinbeck
My wife and I recently spent an evening playing cards with two other couples. As is typical, we got onto the topic of the aches, pains, recent surgeries, and health struggles of ourselves and others we know. One of the ladies noted that a relative was currently trying the new stem cell procedure on one of her knees. It is actually quite a marvel what is happening with that technology.
The conversation moved on and eventually settled on a condition men often encounter later in life. I’m not quite sure how we got there. Someone wondered if that might be the next field for transplants, which brought a chuckle. I suggested perhaps stem cell therapy might work there.
The group cracked up, and I feared the gal beside me might fall on the floor. She just lost it. As the other five were consumed in their laughter for a minute, I just sat there thinking, “What did they hear that is so funny? I don’t get it.”
We called it a night and headed home to bed. At 4 a.m. I awakened suddenly, having had a great revelation. I started laughing. My wife woke up from the shaking of the bed and, somewhat irritated, asked what I was laughing about. I told her, “I just got my joke. Stem cell therapy.” OK; maybe you had to be there.
I know I am getting slow, but come on. “Seven hours to get a joke?” I asked myself.
One of the things I have learned is that our brain does some amazing work while we sleep. When I was working, it was common to wake up at night with a solution to a problem I was dealing with. Perhaps clearing the brain of daily business allows it to work more efficiently. Whatever
the reason, I learned it is wise to put off major decisions until sleep had a chance to mull the issue over.
I’m a little worried, though. My brain is not handling memory as well
as it used to. There is a risk that, rather than solving a problem, I might just forget it. Actually, I guess I’m good either way.
I’m just sayin’. •

Can I Still be of Any Use?
By Pastor Sheila Freeland
A n elderly woman sits alone at her table with a pen in her trembling, feeble hand, equipped to sign the paper before her--the final paper to pass on her home she loves because she and her husband worked their whole lives for it and it has all the memories of their children’s laughter. She realizes there are no more children at her feet, and the laughter has faded away. No more messes to clean but her own, and she’s struggling to cook for just one.
She begins to question, “Does anyone have use of these arthritic hands?” “Does anyone have use of these blinding eyes?” “Does anyone have use of this slow and frail woman?” “Surely there isn’t a purpose for me?” She thinks. She sits there alone because her children have moved on with their busy lives, and she has buried her husband of 62 years. She has retired from her lifelong career because she is unable to move like she used to. In her
sorrow, she asks herself, “What use do I possibly have left to give?” Can you relate to this woman’s story?
Since moving into our 55+ community, questions like hers come up often in conversations with some of the ladies. It has been shared with me how, after raising their children and retiring from a lifelong job, there comes this feeling of uselessness, as if their life is over and there isn’t anything of importance left to do.
I can tell you…God needs you! How do I know this? Because His Word tells us so.
Although raising your children and working hard are important in life, they aren’t the reason or the purpose of our lives. In Psalm 92:14, we read, “They shall still bring forth fruit in old age.” Why? Well, in verse 15, the Bible tells us, “To shew that the Lord is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.” Everything we do, whether it is raising children, doing our job, being a friend, and even in growing old--it is to show how great our God is.
He needs you to teach the young mother how God can get her through the sleepless nights and that they don’t last forever. You can help the newly married young woman by sharing how God helped you and your husband through the struggles you had in your first few years of marriage. God needs you to listen, laugh and cry with your neighbor who just lost her husband of 50 years because you, too, know how God’s strength can get you through it.
When living by the Word of God, old age brings wisdom that is able to help and guide others in need. That wisdom is not useless but a treasure. You are a treasure.
Let us pray to the Lord Psalm 71:18: “Now also when I am old and gray-headed, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation and thy power to everyone that is to come.” Amen

Spotted in the RGV South
Padre Island
By Eryn Reddell Wingert
It was a rarity, growing up in the Rio Grande Valley, to witness a Brown Pelican on South Padre Island. That is not the case today, and how lucky are we?! The Brown Pelican is now thriving around the Island and can be spotted year-round, perched on a post or flying in formation. According to the theworldbirdingcenter.com, they are also seen inland along the Rio Grande. •

Sandy Shares a Popular Recipe from Minnesota
By Sandy Olson

Swedish Kringler
Some Like It Hot
••• Shrimp Fettucine
•••
Junior League of McAllen, Inc.
Serves 12
1½ cups butter
1 pound Velveeta cheese, cubed ½ inch
3 medium onions, chopped
½ pound jalapeño cheese, cubed ½ inch
3 ribs celery, chopped
2 tablespoons chopped jalapeño peppers
¼ cup flour
(more may be needed to thicken)
3 cloves garlic, crushed
4 tablespoons chopped parsley
Salt and pepper to taste
3 pounds shrimp, cleaned and deveined
1 pound fettuccine noodles
1 quart half-and-half Parmesan cheese to taste
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly butter 3-quart casserole dish.
Melt butter in large saucepan. Add onions, celery and bell peppers. Cook 10 minutes or until clear. Add flour; blend well. Cover and cook 15 minutes, stirring often. Add parsley and shrimp. Cover and cook 20 minutes, stirring frequently. Add cream, cheeses, jalapeños, and garlic. Mix well. Add salt and pepper to taste. Cook covered on low heat 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cook fettucine according to package directions. Drain and add sauce. Mix thoroughly. Pour into casserole. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake for 12 minutes. •
Crust:
1 cup real butter 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons water
Mix all the above to form a dough. Roll the dough out on a piece of parchment paper to form two rectangles. Place the parchment paper on a cookie sheet.
Topping: 2 cups water 1 cup real butter 2 cups all-purpose flour 6 eggs
Bring the water and butter to a boil. Whisk in the flour. Beat in the eggs, two at a time, mixing well. Add a teaspoon of either vanilla or almond extract.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spread the topping over the rolledout crusts. Bake for 45 minutes until light brown.
NOTE: This dessert is not to be confused with Kringla, the “figure 8” Norwegian treat that is more like a sweet dough and a cross between a roll and a cookie.
