“We are so excited about partnering with the Brownsville CVB to really reach our Lower Valley Winter Texans,” says Welcome Home RGV’s Leigh Wooldridge. Dafne Maldonado, director of the CVB and the Office of Space Commerce, excitedly shares plans, including having a multitude of local organizations at the Expo, providing information on everything from government agencies to city attractions…to tacos.

Or meander under the rare, palm-forest canopy at the Sabal Palm Sanctuary, a prime spot for birders and nature lovers. The Brownsville Parks and Recreation Department also offers loads of year-round activities--like yoga and Zumba classes and camping under the stars--for residents and visitors. The Brownsville Taco Trail, a collaboration with AARP, is currently made up of 11 savory--and one sweet (rolled ice cream)--taco restaurants. “There are no better tacos outside of Brownsville,” says Montesam, to which Maldonado adds that every stop is different. “You’re not going to have the same experience twice.”

Kristy Meyer travel@welcomehomergv.com Photo Courtesy of Visit Brownsville

All of this barely scratches the surface of what is available to see and do in Brownsville. “I always say there’s at least one activity for every single person,” Maldonado shares. “If you like music, if you like food, history, entertainment, theater… Brownsville has it all.”

the community to join us for another year of fun and quality entertainment. All productions will be held at STC’s Cooper Center for Performing Arts, located at the Pecan Campus, 3200 W. Pecan Blvd. in McAllen. The season starts November 9 with Matt Cox’s play Puffs or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic. In Puffs, Wayne Hopkins is a regular boy who finds out he’s a wizard and goes to school in England, where he makes two best friends and experiences adventure. This, perhaps, sounds familiar. But Wayne is sorted as a Puff; he and the other Puffs simply want to learn how to be wizards, make it through a magic school that proves to be dangerous for children, and avoid attacks by evil wizards.

In the spring, we continue with Antoine De Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince, an adaptation by Rick Cummins and John Scoullar, which opens February 22, 2024. The Little Prince is about a lonely little prince who journeys through the universe in search of enlightenment and finds the strange, narrow-minded world of grownups. We continue our season with STC

Dance Collective’s Transcendence 2024, running April 20. This event showcases the talents of the South Texas College Dance Collective, which is composed of STC students, community members, and dance professionals from the Rio Grande Valley. Transcendence 2024 is a series of visionary works that explore the human experience through raw physicality and storytelling. The exhilarating fusion of movement, sound, and theatricality brings to life an event that resonates with all audiences. The STC Dance Collective explores the power of their own lived experiences to present dance works that transport their audiences to familiar and not-so-familiar places and states of mind. The 2023-2024 season wraps up with our 3rd Annual STX Latinx New Play Festival scheduled for June 2024. STXLNPF is Latino stories told about our community, region, and culture, told by Latinos. It is an opportunity for writers to create and cultivate these stories and share them with everyone. General admission tickets for our Main Stage and Black Box Studio productions are $5. Our group rate for 10 or more guests is $3. Tickets can either be purchased online--using your credit card--or on the day of the performance. Tickets can be purchased at the Box Office with cash or a debit card only. Ticket sales help fund their production and their scholarship, the Dr. John F. Carroll Drama Scholarship, throughout the year. Community members interested in supporting STC Theatre’s creative ventures can do so by sending a donation either for their program or their scholarship on the website at southtexascollege.edu/ go/theatre. Things I Have Learned A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy by Bill Ward

Quit Finding Junk

T oday’s Wisdom: Train your

mind to see the good in every situation. One of the things I have noticed in life is that I generally don’t pay much attention to details that don’t directly impact me. If I was to come home from church and have my wife ask me who the lady in the bright red dress sitting right in front of me was, my likely response would be, “What lady in a bright red dress?” (Yeah; that’s actually happened.) It frustrates her because she could tell me what every woman in church was wearing. I, on the other hand, probably couldn’t tell her what she had been wearing. (Yeah; that’s happened, too.) Then there is this really weird

thing I have begun noticing, against all my genetic predisposition. A few years ago, I stepped out of my car in a parking lot, and there on the ground was a plastic tooth-flosser thing. That is something you find at home in the bathroom, not out in a parking lot. How strange! Since then, I have been finding them everywhere. Hardly a week goes by that I don’t find one in a lot, but I also see them along the road on our walks. These things should not be there, and yet they are. I h a v e , e v i d e n t l y, b e c o m e acutely sensitive to flossers. I am honed in, my brain seeking them out of the visual background clutter, even as it thinks of other stuff. I wonder if sometimes we are like that in other areas of our life. Do we get honed in on things

we are sensitive about, finding them even in places they are not meant to be found? Do we get hurt by words or actions that were never meant to do that? Do we get upset over stupid stuff? Do we take it personally when the Vikings lose another game? One of the things I have learned in life is that we usually find what we are looking for. If we are honed in on finding junk, we will find junk. So, what are you looking for? I hope it is something better than used flossers. I’m just sayin’. • Bill Ward is a retired health-care administrator from Minnesota and a regular columnist, author, and untalented rock ‘n’ roll musician, playing with the band Night Ryders. He winters at Casa Del Sol in Donna. You can contact Bill by email at bwward@charter.net.
