Showcasing Talent

And just like that, this is the last Welcome Home Winter Texan of the season! It has been a wonderful winter, and we have enjoyed sharing it with you!

C ould you imagine our world without the entertainment component? We are so fortunate to have such incredible talent that comes to South Texas each winter. When we were given the opportunity to take over the Entertainer Showcase in 2022, we jumped at it! To be in the middle of connecting activity directors with entertainers is an honor, and we take the job seriously.

I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to stick around, to extend your stay for a few days, weeks, months... or even indefinitely! The fun keeps coming; we keep dancing, dining, and having fun all summer long, and we’d love to have you join us.

If you feel you must go, I’d like to invite you to help us spread the word about South Texas to everyone you meet along the way and those you see every day back home. Invite them to join you next season! We would love to have them join us. The more the merrier!

If there’s one thing we know for sure, things change, and the entertainment dynamic of our world is no different. By opening the Showcase to the public, all of you are offered the opportunity to weigh in on who you like, who you don’t, and who your park should book ASAP!

This September, we will host our second, not so annual (thanks to the pandemic), Winter Texan Reunion Tour, so we’d also like to invite you to join us at one of our stops. Stay tuned as we announce our travel plans.

Save the dates for Entertainer Showcase 2024, January 9-10 at the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium.

We’re connecting the dots…•

It has been a real pleasure to serve you this year. We will work throughout the summer months on all of our programming so next season will be even better than this one!

Safe travels, Y’all! •

J anis Joplin, Pat Benatar, and George Strait hits emanated from the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium during the 2023 Entertainer Showcase. The two-date event hosted nearly 60 acts, including singers, bands, comedians, and illusionists.

The Entertainer Showcase was originally produced by the RGV Activity Director Association. Before the association disbanded in 2022, its membership unanimously voted for Welcome Home RGV to take over the annual event.

It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating the long-awaited return of so many of our friends. Now, here we are bidding you farewell and safe travels. All of us at Welcome Home RGV look forward to your return. Plans are

activity directors, entertainment committee members, key staff, and volunteers from across the Rio Grande Valley.

The variety of entertainment is one of the deciding factors for winter visitors, according to the recent Winter Texan Economic Impact Study commissioned by Welcome Home RGV. The Showcase is the opportunity to experience the variety--and availability--of entertainment, all at once.

Each act commands the stage for nine minutes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. After their performances, RV-park and 55+-community representatives had the

opportunity to book upcoming shows.

This year’s event saw seasonal favorites take the stage, in addition to new acts from across the country, including an illusionist from California, a four-piece ensemble from North Carolina, and a ventriloquist who hails from Georgia.

Ventriloquist Mark Merchant is visiting the Valley for the first time. He has performed all over the world, and it’s obvious he enjoys what he does. Merchant’s performance of clever banter barely gave the crowd time to catch its breath between jokes.

him, we visited briefly. Merchant shared, “Comedy is key. My goal is to make fun of the absurd,” which was evident earlier as he exited the stage and his glammed-up dummy quipped, “You were great last night, Curt!” addressing the event emcee, Curt James. To which James responded, “Yes, I was.”

Folk singer and songwriter Nina Ricci is also new to South Texas. Ricci, accompanied by her mom, Teresa, has spent two months getting to know the area and meeting people.

Influenced heavily by Joan Baez, Ricci incorporates storytelling, history, and humor into her performances, in addition to her unique style of music. “I’ve found a way,” she says, “to make a collage of old folk music, some 1960s covers, and my own music, as well.”

Reaction to the variety of acts, the new venue, and the format offered at the Entertainer Showcase had one attendee commenting on the “amazing day of talent,” and then booking several acts for the 20232024 season.

Welcome Home RGV owner Kristi Collier summed it all up this way: “We rocked Harlingen!” •

Sharyland Pioneer Presents Chicago: Teen Edition

A t the top of the second act of the touring  Chicago , hoofer-turnedfemme fatale Velma Kelly greets the audience with the salutation, "Hello, Suckers!"

Suckers, we are, but not just because we've paid full price for a non-equity (or the older adult discount of $5.00), streamlined staging of the revival of the original Broadway show. We're suckers because we've allowed ourselves to get so thoroughly lost in the decadent, razzle-dazzled, Jazz Age world of this Tony-Award-winning musical, courtesy of John Kander's memorable music, Fred Ebb's clever lyrics, Ebb and Bob Fosse's engaging script (adapted from Maurine Dallas Watkins' 1926 play), and Ann Reinking's sensual choreography (based on Fosse's original work).

Being a sucker has long been a prerequisite for attending  Chicago, considering that it has flown in the face of more conventional musicals since its premiere in 1975. It asks audiences for a huge suspension of disbelief as it creates this meta-theatrical portrait of 1920s Chicago, where every plot point becomes a vaudeville-style production number, every featured character stops to sing a character-defining song, and scenic design consists of

bare performance space in front of an onstage orchestra perched on elevated, tiered seating. And it requires us to raise our Fosse hands in surrender to the genuinely unlikable people who populate this play.

The plot revolves around Roxie Hart, an aspiring chorus girl who murders her lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she attempts to win over the public; her pathetic husband, Amos; popular

radio reporter Mary Sunshine; and the jury by hiring the suave criminal lawyer Billy Flynn to turn her crime into a barrage of sensational headlines that place fame and celebrity over truth and justice. Not fooled by her shenanigans are the brassy prison matron Mama Morton and fellow con artist and cellmate Velma Kelly.

The show is supported by a terrific 10-piece orchestra that helps keep the show fresh and sophisticated.

winter texan wednesday

Meanwhile, the hard-working ensemble, dressed in all-black costuming, move with the remarkable precision and synchronization that have become this musical's trademarks. There isn't a dull moment or misstep, nothing that would snap us out of that sweet surrender to which we've so willingly succumbed. It's hard to call out highlights in an evening that is so exhaustively entertaining, with the heart-stopping rendition of Mama Morton's "When You're Good to Mama" and the ever-endearing, selfeffacing "Mr. Cellophane.”

The show concludes with Velma and Roxie singing "Nowadays," which includes the lyrics, "It's good, isn't it/ Grand, isn't it/ Great, isn't it/ Swell, isn't it/ Fun, isn't it nowadays?"

This musical and this touring production of it is all these things.

Floating Beauty to Arrive at IMAS

The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) is pleased to announce the exhibition Floating Beauty: Women in the Art of Ukiyo-e will be opening February 4 and will remain on display through May 7.

Floating Beauty: Women in the Art of Ukiyo-e examines the historical perspectives on the depiction of women in art during the Edo Period in Japan (1615 – 1858). This exhibition highlights female characters painted on woodblock prints, all created in the ukiyo-e style. The prints show women in literature, kabuki theatre, poetry, and courtesans, as well as geishas of the Yoshiwara district. Wives and mothers from different social classes performing the duties of their station are also portrayed in the woodblocks in order to give us insight into the lives of women in pre-modern Japan. In the tradition of ukiyo-e, women are most often represented in the bijinga (pictures of beautiful women) genre. This was the passive, attentive, and demure idea of feminine beauties.

Looking beyond the bijinga, though, the exhibition shows that women in Edo society took an active role in their own lives, and this fact is echoed through literature and drama of the period. Over 50 woodblock prints are featured in the exhibition, which include works by ukiyo-e masters Kitagawa Utamaro, Suzuki Harunobu, Utagawa Kunisada, Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, and Kikugawa Eizan. The entire exhibition is taken from the permanent collection of the Reading Public Museum.

then the artisans, and, finally, the merchants. The aristocratic class made up of the ruling family and his daimyos, or regional lords, lived outside of this new system. The shogun’s societal restrictions created tension and festered resentment toward the ruling class. To prevent revolts, the regime authorized the creation of Edo’s pleasure district, known as the Yoshiwara, in 1617. It was a small, walled section outside of the city. It was in this Yoshiwara that the courtesans lived and worked, where kabuki theatre was performed, and where the lower classes could show off their wealth and engage in decadent activities otherwise banned in conservative Japanese society.

This new urban culture came to be known as “the floating world,” a term which described the hedonistic lifestyle of frequenting the Yoshiwara, attending kabuki plays, and patronizing brothels.

Nevertheless, the woodblock portraits reflected not only changing standards of beauty in Japanese culture but the artist’s sensibility, as well as the important role women took during those periods of time in order to see the progress of Japan in today’s society.

Floating Beauty: Women in the Art of Ukiyo-e is organized by the Reading Public Museum in Reading, Pennsylvania, and supported by the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of McAllen, comprised of 16 sister companies. •

Ukiyo-e translates, literally, as “pictures of the floating world,” and it is a Japanese art form that flourished during a period marked by drastic social, political, and economic change as the country went under military control of the Tokugawa shogunate.

The new regime delivered peace and prosperity to the island nation and reordered social structure by dividing citizens into four classes, and mobility between classes

Black Friday

The world has labeled the day after Thanksgiving Black Friday, a name that originated on this day because many retailers report sales in the black (meaning a profit was made) on the day after Thanksgiving, when they had been in the red the days before. Unlike these retailers, however, a great many of those out shopping on Black Friday will go the opposite direction regarding their finances by the time the day is over.

In the past, I remember planning my Black Friday schedule weeks in advance. I meticulously planned out what I would purchase and from which stores. I precisely mapped out the day. All the while, I was conscience of the fact that my family could not really afford for me to purchase most of it. I would reason that truth away, however, by telling myself I was doing the right thing. After all, I truly do love giving gifts, and there’s no better time to give than at Christmas. Right? Isn’t that what Jesus would want me to do? He would want me to go into debt and stretch my budget too far? That’s why He came to earth? That’s why

He willfully went to the cross and laid down His life, so I could spend too much money to show I care and prove my love.

Right?

I was one of those parents struggling to keep up with the Joneses, struggling to meet the demands of the world, those looking to be fulfilled through the acquiring of material goods for themselves and those they love--looking but never achieving. A great many of these parents profess to know Christ, just as I did back then. Unfortunately, the love of the world pulls strong on their hearts and minds, and they answer to that pull rather than turn to Christ. Oh,

that they would have eyes to see and ears to hear. That they would be set free from worldly bondage and the love of mammon. Oh, that they would turn to Christ and live.

As I was reading my morning devotional, I was reminded that those who are truly set free no longer seek the things of this world, but their focus--their interests--become those of Jesus Christ, interests that include practical things of beauty, spiritual things of above, and an all-encompassing passion for others

based on the love they have for the Lord. They no longer look to material items as a way to earn the affections of others or to show they care, but, rather, they serve with a selfless spirit while sharing the love of Christ, a beautifully contagious thing that permeates to the soul and spirit of humankind outside the reason and logic of man.

But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. - Galatians 6:14 KJV •

Over the years, as the requests for things have grown, so has your generosity, and we couldn’t be more grateful!

It is always fun to open the boxes and see what will pop out. These fun hats with their adorable pompoms, will certainly brighten someone’s day; we know they did ours. And piles of blankets are always a welcome sight. The local mission groups we serve minister to so many people who do not have heat in their homes—or who have no home at all. So even though our “winter” is definitely mild in comparison to up north, it can be a difficult time for those without adequate shelter. Yea blankets!

This past year, we added another group that provides a grief ministry. For those groups, thanks to y’all, we are able to give a prayer shawl or lap blanket to those taking part. We have heard so many stories of the comfort a prayer shawl brings as it wraps around the shoulders of someone in mourning. These prayer shawls serve

as a reminder that the person who receives it has been prayed for and is not walking this journey alone.

Also this past year, we have added two more clinics to those we provide Knitted Knockers to. The Lamb’s Loom was honored to receive the requests, and thanks to all those who continue to add to the Knocker box, we are able to sustain monthly donations to these clinics. If you would like to join in this ministry of knitting or crocheting breast prosthetics, give us a call. We are always happy to provide pattern support, and we carry four of the approved Knocker yarns.

The year of 2022 had more items donated than ever before, with

5,675 coming into our Donation Chest! As we begin another year, we are grateful to everyone who continues to contribute and so very blessed that God knit us all together in such a beautiful way of serving and loving others, one stitch at a time.

If you have any questions about how you can get involved, please feel free to contact us or come by and jump right in. You can join us on our website at thelambsloom.com and follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

And, of course, we have lots of fun articles right here in Welcome Home Winter Texan

The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue.

We truly appreciate all of our PEGs! You can be a PEG, too! Pray. Encourage. Give. Remember, The Lamb’s Loom is not just a yarn shop; it’s a ministry and a mindset. •

RECIPE CONNECTION SAVORY TREATS

••• Some Like It Hot ••• Kahlúa and Praline Brownies Junior League of McAllen, Inc.

Praline crust

1/3 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed

2/3 cup sifted flour

1/3 cup butter

½ cup finely chopped pecans

Mix together sugar, butter, flour, and pecans. Pat evenly over bottom of a 9-inch square pan and set aside.

Brownie filling

1 (1 oz.) squares unsweetened chocolate

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

¼ cup shortening

¼ cup Kahlúa

¼ cup butter

½ cup sifted flour

2 large eggs

¼ teaspoon salt

½ cup granulated sugar

½ cup chopped pecans

½ cup light brown sugar, firmly packed

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Prepare filling by melting chocolate with shortening and butter over low heat. Beat eggs with sugars and vanilla until blended. Stir in

cooked chocolate mixture, then Kahlúa. Add flour and salt, mixing to a smooth batter. Stir in pecans. Pour into pan lined with praline crust and bake for 25 minutes or until done, being careful not to overbake. Let cool.

Kahlúa Butter Cream Frosting

2 tablespoons butter, softened

1 tablespoon Kahlúa

2 cups sifted powdered sugar

1 tablespoon cream

Beat all ingredients until smooth and creamy. If necessary, beat in additional Kahlúa for good spreading consistency. Spread frosting over top of brownies; place in refrigerator ½ hour to set.

Chocolate Glaze

2 (1 oz.) squares semisweet chocolate

2 teaspoons shortening

1 (1 oz.) square unsweetened chocolate

Melt ingredients together over low heat. Stir to blend and cool before spreading evenly over frosting, and cool until set. Cut into small squares.

Sandy Shares a Favorite Recipe from Indiana

Many people love lasagna, but most are only familiar with the tomato sauce, Southern Italian version. The following dish is a creamy white pasta treat, much different, but no less delicious.

Chicken Lasagna

8 oz. regular lasagna noodles

1 small yellow onion, finely diced

1 can (10.5 oz.) cream of mushroom soup

1 cup grated parmesan cheese

1 can (10.5 oz.) cream of chicken soup

1 cup real sour cream, NOT low fat

2½ cups cooked, diced chicken

½ teaspoon garlic powder (not salt)

2 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese Salt and pepper to taste

Cook the noodles in a large pot of salted boiling water until they are about three-fourths done. Drain and rinse with cold water. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, combine the remaining ingredients, except the cheddar

cheese. Mix well to make sure the soups, sour cream, and onions are evenly combined.

In a 9x13-inch sprayed baking dish, spread one-fourth of the chicken mixture on the bottom. Follow with one-third of the lasagna noodles, making an even layer. Add another one-fourth of the chicken mixture and one-third of the shredded cheddar. Repeat these layers using the rest of the ingredients and ending with the last one-third of the cheddar on top. You should have three layers total. Bake for 40-45 minutes, and let stand for another 10 minutes before serving.

Ladies of La Floresta Visit Gelman Stained Glass Museum

The Ladies of La Floresta enjoy a monthly visit to various attractions throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Past attractions included a boot factory, Mozna Chocolate (factory), holiday displays, an art gallery, and the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valley National Shrine. It is also a great opportunity to check out local restaurants.

In January, we toured the Gelman Stained Glass Museum in San Juan.

“It is home to the most comprehensive collection of stained-glass windows in the United States…Many were salvaged from deteriorating churches around the country,” according to the Museum’s website.

It also has antique altars, baptismal fonts, statues, and more. It was an amazing and powerful experience as we learned of the artists and scenes depicted in the stained glass.

Following the tour, we had an excellent lunch at the nearby Azure Bistro.

Critically acclaimed actor/singer and Broadway star Chester Gregory is bringing Jackie Wilson’s biggest hits to life in a live concert at Christian Fellowship Church, 901 N. Loop 499, Harlingen, Thursday, February 2, at 7:30 p.m.

Chester Gregory to Perform in Harlingen February 2

Chester Gregory is an awardwinning actor and singer. He made his Broadway debut in Hairspray, performing in many more productions, including the leading role of Berry Gordy in the hit show Motown the Musical. He became a full-time actor and performer after landing the lead role in the critically acclaimed stage play The Jackie Wilson Story, which enjoyed a three-year run of sold-out shows. Chester continues to tell Jackie Wilson’s story today in his own stage show. Joined by a jaw-dropping rhythm section, Chester performs a highcaliber tribute to Jackie Wilson and the artists he influenced. This energetic show will have you dancing and singing to recognizable hits all night long!

The Harlingen Concert Association has been presenting internationally acclaimed artists to the community since the 1930s. This all-volunteer, nonprofit organization is committed to enriching the cultural life of the Harlingen area through live performances. Thanks to loyal season ticketholders and sponsors, these concerts can be offered at affordable, family-friendly prices.

For ticket information, visit the Harlingen Concert Association’s website at HarlingenConcert.com or call 956392-9757.
