And just like that, this is the last Welcome Home Winter Texan of the season! It has been a wonderful winter, and we have enjoyed sharing it with you!
A nother Winter Texan Expo has come and gone! We saw so many first-timers at the show. It was very exciting helping them with their first Expo experience.
The show has been around for 30 years; we took it over in 2014. The ideas were flowing on things to add and incorporate into next year’s event, and we have already begun to put those ideas into play! The thing I love most about the Winter Texan Expo is that I get to see so many of you in just a few days’ time.
I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to stick around, to extend your stay for a few days, weeks, months... or even indefinitely! The fun keeps coming; we keep dancing, dining, and having fun all summer long, and we’d love to have you join us.
If you feel you must go, I’d like to invite you to help us spread the word about South Texas to everyone you meet along the way and those you see every day back home. Invite them to join you next season! We would love to have them join us. The more the merrier!
But the Expo is just one of the ways we like to connect with you. If you haven’t already done so, please download our mobile app, sign up for our weekly e-newsletter, and join our private Facebook group. Take a tour with us, book a cruise, and come to our variety of events throughout the season.
We are here to help you have a great winter experience, so if there’s anything we can ever help you with, just give us a call! We would be more than happy to point you in the right direction…and we might even join you!
This September, we will host our second, not so annual (thanks to the pandemic), Winter Texan Reunion Tour, so we’d also like to invite you to join us at one of our stops. Stay tuned as we announce our travel plans.
30th Winter Texan Expo Ready for the next 30
It has been a real pleasure to serve you this year. We will work throughout the summer months on all of our programming so next season will be even better than this one!
We’re connecting the dots…
Safe travels, Y’all! •

T he line of winter visitors and local seniors continued to grow outside the Exhibit Hall at the McAllen Convention Center as the McAllen Chamber of Commerce coordinated a ceremonial ribbon cutting.
At the count of three, the ribbon was cut, and the doors opened for the 30th Annual Winter Texan Expo & Health Fair.

With bright orange bags in hand, visitors streamed into the hall and fanned out down the aisles. Vendors from across South Texas readily dispensed information and promotional material on everything from the historic Palo Alto Battle Field in Brownsville to the Bessie III Trolley Tour in Rio Grande City. The state of Texas was well represented, with booths from Laredo, Pearland (near Houston), Smithville-Schulenburg-CueroSequin, and beyond, with Travel Oklahoma representing all the state to our north has to offer.
A large booth showcasing the Mexican State of Tamaulipas was
hopping, with folkloric dancers and one gentleman crafting a hammock as another--wearing a puffy red vest with gold lettering on the back that read “Welcome Winter Texans!”-excitedly invited visitors to spin a prize wheel.
The Doctors Hospital at Renaissance booth housed a morethan-life-sized game of Operation, customized to look like mascot Dr. Ted. E. Bear, who made an appearance during day one.
H-E-B handed out sweet and salty snacks, while the large Texas Regional Bank booth hosted a game of ring toss. The Ed Martens Senior Texan Softball League visited with

Take a Flight or Attend Movie Night at the Commemorative Air Force – RGV Wing Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
A fter 29 years of operating out of Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport, producing 25 annual airshows, the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) - Rio Grande Valley Wing has found a new home. Following a hectic search for a site with sufficient room to house the aircraft and the unique memorabilia for display in its care, the RGV Wing negotiated a lease with Southwind Airlines, Inc. and Cameron County for space at Port Isabel-Cameron County Airport, located between Laguna Vista and Bayview.
The RGV Wing began the move in November 2017. Several months later, and after much-needed reconstruction and hard work by dedicated CAF volunteers, the new CAF-RGV headquarters and aviation museum were ready for business.
Continuing the initiative and foresight of CAF founder Lloyd Nolan of Mercedes, Texas, back in 1957, the RGV Wing is now operating out
of a spectacular WWII-era hangar, complete with an imposing control tower. This historical, “strangely beautiful” structure is home to the fleet of about a dozen aircraft, the historic Aviation Museum, several fascinating diorama display cabinets, and a selection of vintage military vehicles, including a fully operational 1926 Ford Motel T and a 1937 pedal bicycle.
The CAF truly offers visitors an interesting and informative look at
the history of the airborne branch of the U.S. military and its impact on the Rio Grande Valley. Despite the hiccup caused by COVID-19, CAF perseverance paid off. In addition to concerts and other fundraising events—like Museum Days—aircraft displays, and Museum tours in June 2019, the RGV Wing produced its first airshow at its new home. This was followed by another spectacular crowd-pleasing show in October 2021. And the good news is, plans are in the works for CAF Airshow 2023 during the first full weekend in October.
At present, there is no fee for admission to the RGV Museum. However, free-will donations are always appreciated. (A charge may be levied for group tours of 10 people or more, the rate depending on the number.) As a 501(c)(3), the CAF cannot charge for base activities or purchases. However, for a minimal, cost-covering donation, interested
visitors can take a thrilling flight in one of the vintage WWII aircraft, piloted by a certified, modern-day CAF pilot. (All donations are tax deductible.)
Another attraction is the regular, “no fixed fee” classic aviation-themed Movie Night get togethers. These evenings are organized in the hangar, and the event includes fresh, directfrom-the-grill BBQ offerings prepared to perfection by a CAF staff member. Movie Night shows typically occur on the first Friday of the month. Please save the upcoming dates: February 3 and March 3.
A mere 10-minute drive from the South Padre Island Golf Club in Laguna Vista, this historic gem is certainly worth a visit. Don’t overlook the CAF-RGV website (rgvcaf.org) and social media, particularly Facebook, so you can keep up with what’s happening.

Setting Records at Ron Hoover Annual Open House
W hile the team at Ron Hoover knows their annual two-day RV event is always a big hit, they had no idea they would set a record in 2023. Their attendance on day one, Thursday, January 19, was the highest in the event’s 16-year history!
There were some big winners at this event. Leticia Castillo from Weslaco won the grand prize January 19, a 4-wheeler. On day two, Esther Schwabe from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, won the grand prize and chose a cargo trailer, which she said would be used to help her local church.
Over 50 vendors attended the event, contributing $21,000 for the South Texas Juvenile Diabetes Association. Our Winter Texans donated an additional $2,600, and Ron Hoover added to their donations.
By the end of the event, the team passed out 7,000 t-shirts and served over 7,500 hot dogs. The team extends a sincere thank you to everyone who attended, all of the vendors, and their extremely generous sponsor, Coca-Cola.
In 2024, Ron Hoover hopes to set another attendance record! •

Exploring the Quanah Parker Trail Submitted to the Texas Historical Commission Blog by Justin Minsker
Story and photos credit:
Texas Historical Commission
Dozens of arrows, 22 feet tall, pierce the landscape of the Panhandle Plains. They commemorate Quanah Parker, last chief of the Comanche (Numunuu), and the territory called Comanchería where his people lived. Parker was the son of a Quahada Comanche man and a white woman, a heritage that made a lasting impact on his life.
His mother was Cynthia Ann Parker, who was famously captured at age 9 by a group of Comanche during an 1836 raid at her family’s homestead near present-day Mexia. She grew up with the tribe, married chief Peta Nocona, and had three children, of whom Quanah was the first, born around 1845. As an adult, Cynthia Ann was recaptured by the Texas Rangers and forcibly returned to white society.
Quanah never saw his mother again. He was haunted by loss and by resentment toward Anglo Texans. Yet he was also adept at building relationships with them.
For years under Quanah Parker’s leadership, in the 1860s and 1870s, the Quahada Comanche held their territory against increasing force. But after unrelenting pressure from the US Army, they were removed to the Kiowa-Comanche reservation in Oklahoma in the mid-1870s.
On the reservation, Parker continued his leadership, unifying the different Comanche groups and encouraging their cultural traditions while also incorporating Anglo forms of schooling and agriculture. Parker made deals with white ranchers who leased Comanche lands for their cattle to graze, and he negotiated other business dealings with white investors.
In 2011, residents living in the former Comanchería established the Quanah Parker Trail to interpret the Indigenous history of the region in the days before and during colonial settlement. The enormous arrows that mark the trail sites were made by regional sculptor Charles Smith (1942-2018), who lived near Lubbock.
Traversing the Trail
The Quanah Parker Trail is already beginning to have an impact on economic development efforts in the Panhandle, but additional visitation is encouraged. Before hitting the road, visit the trail’s website to learn more about the region’s communities and their
cultural attractions. The following represent merely a sampling of the dozens of participating cities.
Goodnight
Charles Goodnight and his business partner John Adair established the JA Ranch, the first cattle ranch in the Texas panhandle, in 1877 in the Palo Duro Canyon area. In 1887, Goodnight established the Goodnight-Thayer Cattle Company in present Armstrong County and built a spacious Victorian-style twostory ranch house. The Goodnight home is restored on its original site and features a 268-squarefoot second-floor sleeping porch with spectacular views of the countryside and the nearby bison herd that are actual descendants of the animals raised by Charles and Mary Ann Goodnight.
The Charles and Mary Ann Goodnight Ranch State Historic Site includes the J. Evetts Haley Visitor and Education Center, which offers exhibits about the Goodnights, bison, and the settlement of the area. A Quanah Parker Trail giant arrow marker on the grounds commemorates the friendship between Charles Goodnight and Quanah Parker.
Post
This Texas Main Street city southeast of Lubbock was named for cereal magnate C.W. Post, who established the town as a model farming community in 1907. A
statue and several THC historical markers grace the entryway to the downtown 1923 Garza County Courthouse. A few blocks away lies the Garza County Historical Museum, featuring a Quanah Parker Trail arrow in the side yard of the former sanitarium. Inside, several exhibits showcase Comanche artifacts, clothing, and artwork.
Spur
In the town of Spur, visitors can stop into the Spur-Dickens County Museum. The town boasts

a unique western heritage which is showcased in this downtown museum, including Native American artifacts, railroad history, the story of a turn-of-the-century pioneer town, and ongoing change throughout modern times. A headdress reportedly belonging to Parker is displayed at the museum.
Matador
The site of the first arrow-planting ceremony, Matador has strong ties to Parker’s legacy, notably as his destination for several of his visits in the early 1900s. The Motley County Historical Museum features an impressive collection of historic photos documenting these appearances, along with exhibits dedicated to local Native American legacies and a scale model of downtown from this time period. The Quanah Parker Trail arrow is placed on the grounds of Matador’s 1891 Motley County Jail, which boasts a THC historical marker.
Quanah
On the far eastern edge of the Plains Trail Region is the town of Quanah, named in honor of the Comanche chief. Parker’s partnership in the Quanah, Acme and Pacific
Railroad was an important regional business venture, and he visited the town often from his nearby home in southwestern Oklahoma. Parker’s legacy is on display at the Quanah, Acme and Pacific Railroad Museum, and a nearby arrow draws visitors to the well-preserved historic Main Street district. An impressive 1938 mural titled “The Naming of Quanah” is in the lobby of the Quanah Post Office, and a granite monument pays tribute to Parker on the downtown square, anchored by the 1908 Beaux Arts style Hardeman County Courthouse, restored through

More Fun Than You Can Shake a Needle At
It has been an amazing journey over the last eight years, and we would love to have you come join us! If you are new to South Texas, let us introduce ourselves. The Lamb’s Loom is not your typical yarn shop. We are staffed by our wonderful group of Shepherds, our volunteers who help out around the shop and make this whole thing weave together so well. We have fun events throughout the year, offer classes and workshops, and there’s always lots of fun to be had in one of our three Sit-nKnit areas. Everyone is welcome to come and join in the fun.
Every day is show-n-tell time here at The Lamb’s Loom, too! Seeing what others are doing (or have done) sparks creativity and appreciation in us all. Some of us love to make scarves, blankets, and shawls but have no one to give these things to. That’s where adding them to our Donation Chest meets that need and ensures they will go to a good home. We currently serve over 20 mission groups that distribute these items all over the world.
Another great thing about our shop is that we have such a variety of talents, interests, abilities, and experiences coming together in this journey. You
never know who will pop in to share in show-n-tell time. Some members of our “flock” are Winter Texans from Canada to Iowa to Massachusetts. And our Shepherd volunteers come from all over the world--Cameroon, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Israel, and Texas, just to name a few. We all love The Lamb’s Loom
because we can share in our love of yarn, express our creativity, and make friends, all while working together to show God’s love by helping others.
For the rest of the year, when y’all aren’t here at home in South Texas, you can join us on our website at thelambsloom.com and follow us on

Although South Padre Island places a heavy focus on water sports, we have a variety of activities that can also be enjoyed without needing to get your feet wet. One of our more popular activities many tourists don’t realize we offer is horseback riding on the beach. If you follow our main road all the way north until it ends, you will find South Padre Island Adventure Park. Several activities for people who enjoy being out in the sun with their families are offered there. With over 40 acres of land, South Padre Island Adventure Park provides an expansive zip-lining experience, a variety of animals and birds in the petting barn, and, of course, a massive stable with over 100 horses for horseback riding sessions.
The South Padre Island Adventure Park has multiple times and sessions throughout the day to match the preference visitors might have. You Never Outgrow the Zoo
by Eryn Reddell Wingert
The VIP, behind-the-scenes tour of the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville literally starts behind the scenes at an entrance known to Zoo staff. After a light breakfast in the Education Center, which houses a mammoth skull--among other interesting items--and small animals, and the distribution of “I Get Around with Welcome Home!” lanyards with commemorative pins, the maximum group of 50 boards the trolley.
Information about the Zoo is immediately--and consistently-disseminated. Some of the stops include a meet and greet with Cotton the camel, a visit with a crash of rhinoceros, a mingling among a creep of Galapagos tortoises, and serving up snacks to a flamboyance of flamingos.
Our guide shares facts about a multitude of animals along the route, in addition to the Zoo’s history and animal care, conservation and education programs. Facts we learn along the way: camels are a source of dairy; carpenters, welders, and mechanics are vital to the Zoo; animal droppings are recycled, provided to local farmers and
growers; and the Gladys Porter Zoo is a retirement destination for senior animals from up north. (“Just like us!” declared one tour-goer.)
The trolley driver, who is also a horticulturalist, and the Zoo guide are incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about the Gladys Porter Zoo. The tour culminates back at the Education Center for a sit-down lunch.
Overheard on the tour: “I’ve got my 50 bucks worth; this was great!” and “I really enjoyed this. Beats walking the whole Zoo.”

by Chaplain Marty Ziegler
A ugust 5, 2010, the San Jose copper-gold mine experienced a cave in. Located 500 miles north of Santiago, Chile, there was little hope for anyone to survive. Probes were drilled in the hope of finding survivors. August 22, a probe detected some tapping. When the probe was pulled up, a note was attached that read “Estamos bien en el refugio los 33.” Translated, it read, “We are all right in the refuge; all 33.” The men were trapped 2300 feet down with no way out. They had been surviving on emergency provisions rationed out every other day consisting of canned tuna and peaches. They were out of rations.
Nutrient gel, water, and communication devices were soon sent down. First-aid supplies and solid food followed. Plans were made to rescue the men.
Three oil-drilling units were brought in. The rescue shaft was completed October 9. Engineers from NASA helped design and build

a 13-foot, coffin-like capsule. The total cost of the rescue attempt would be over $20 million. The rescue began 67 days after the cave-in.
A rescuer was lowered in the capsule to minister aid to the miners. He encouraged them and gave instructions on how to be saved. Not one man refused to be rescued. Not one man said, “Not for me, I will get out on my own.”
The rescue was celebrated by all. Lives were changed. Families were reunited. Prayers for rescue
changed to thanksgiving. The miners had the opportunity to be a firsthand witness of hope, grace, and love.
Just like the miners, we have been blessed with seeing hope when there is no hope. Many of us have been given grace when we did not deserve it or earn it. Many of us experienced love when we thought we were lost and far from love. Jesus gives us that hope, grace, and love.
Jesus came down to rescue us. He ministers to us. He encourages us. He gives instructions to be rescued. Just as the miners had to trust the rescuer, we trust Jesus. Just like the miners had to submit to the coffin-like capsule, Jesus asks us to submit and surrender to him. Just like the miners who were raised to new life out of the depths of hopelessness, we, too, are raised to new life in the hope of Christ. No money can purchase the grace that rescues us in Jesus. No love was demonstrated more than the life of Jesus poured out for you. He is calling you today. •

Sandy Shares a Favorite Recipe from Ohio
Greek-Style Shrimp and Pasta
By Sandy Olson
Greeks and Italians are very close in temperament, love of life, and zesty flavors in food. This recipe combines many of the ingredients the two countries have in common: seafood, pasta, tomatoes, and cheese!
Crust
30 Oreo cookies
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Lightly butter pan. Break up cookies and place in a food processor fitted with a metal blade; process until crumbs. Add butter and mix until blended. Pour into 9-inch or 10-inch springform pan. Press evenly over bottom and two-thirds up sides of pan. Refrigerate while preparing filling.
Filling
4 (8 oz.) packages cream cheese
3 large egg yolks at room temperature at room temperature
1/3 cup whipping cream
1¼ cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 large eggs at room temperature
18 Oreo cookies, chopped into quarters
In a large bowl, beat cream cheese with mixer on medium speed until smooth. Scrape down sides of bowl and add sugar, beating until mixture is fluffy—about 3 minutes. Mix in flour. Continue beating and add eggs and
yolks; mix until smooth. Beat in whipping cream and vanilla. Pour half of the batter into prepared crust. Sprinkle with quartered Oreos. Pour remaining batter over cookies. Place pan on baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes. Reduce oven to 225 degrees and bake for an additional 50 minutes or until set. Remove cake from oven and increase oven temperature to 350 degrees.
Topping
2 cups sour cream1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ cup sugar
In a small bowl, stir together sour cream, sugar, and vanilla. Spread sour cream mixture evenly on top of cake. Return to 350-degree oven and bake for 7 minutes or until sour cream begins to set. Remove from oven and cool in draft-free place to room temperature. Cover cake in pan and refrigerate several hours or overnight. This cake may be refrigerated up to 3 days, or it may be frozen for 1 month, as long as it is covered well. Thaw in refrigerator overnight before serving. Before serving, remove sides of springform pan. Serve chilled. •
1½ pounds medium shrimp, peeled
¾ cup finely chopped fresh basil
Salt and pepper to taste
1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 large clove fresh garlic, finely minced
1 teaspoon dried oregano
5 tablespoons olive oil
8 oz. crumbled feta cheese
2 cups peeled and cubed fresh tomatoes
6 oz. rigatoni pasta
½ cup dry white wine
D evein the shrimp, if that is your preference. Then rinse and pat dry. Season with salt and pepper. Sauté the garlic in 2 tablespoons of the oil in a heavy skillet. Watch that it does not burn; use mediumlow heat. Add the tomatoes and cook for 1 minute. Add the wine, basil, pepper flakes, oregano, and salt and pepper, to taste. Cook over medium heat for 10 minutes. Heat the
remaining oil in another skillet and add the shrimp. Sauté a few minutes
until they turn pink. Remove from heat and place in a deep baking dish. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Sprinkle the shrimp with the feta cheese, and spoon the tomato sauce over the top. Bake for 10 minutes or until bubbly.
While the shrimp is baking, cook the rigatoni in a large pot of boiling, salted water until al dente. Drain well and place in a deep serving bowl. Spoon the shrimp and sauce over the pasta to serve.
NOTE: If you purchase frozen peeled and deveined shrimp, thaw them overnight in the refrigerator. Rinse and drain well; pat dry with a paper towel, if necessary, before cooking.

Spotted in the RGV
Brownsville, Texas
by Eryn Reddell Wingert
The city of Brownsville is a fascinating place, with buildings dating back centuries in historic downtown to a rocket ship build and launch site at Boca Chica Beach. The new
converging with the old can be found on the same city block, sometimes on the same building--for example, the large, pink BTX mural along the side of the old Capital Theater by a LosAngeles-based artist, commissioned by the city commission.

Fly With Us at the 2023 SPI Kite Fest
FIND A PLACE TO BELONG
The SPI Kite Fest is back for a weekend full of beautiful displays and shows that will captivate the audience. As a kid, nearly everyone flew a kite, and this is the perfect event to rekindle that childhood nostalgia. The outdoor festival will be held at the Flats, next to the South Padre Island Convention Center. The outdoor performances will take place February 3 and 4 and will start at 10:00 a.m., with displays, performances, and food concessions
going on all day. The outdoor shows are free to the public, and everyone is encouraged to come. This is the perfect opportunity to bring the family together and check out the colorful, largerthan-life kites. The winter weather is perfect for this event, as the strong winds are ideal for flying kites, and cool temperatures allow you to relax.
For more information on the 2023 SPI Kite Fest and future events, check out sopadre.com. •
