hello
T ours, tours, and more tours! And a few cruises, too!
It’s hard to keep up with you guys, but we’re sure trying. We know you like to be on the go and you like pressing the “easy” button, and that’s exactly what we love doing--making your adventures worry-free.
And just like that, this is the last Welcome Home Winter Texan of the season! It has been a wonderful winter, and we have enjoyed sharing it with you!
I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to stick around, to extend your stay for a few days, weeks, months... or even indefinitely! The fun keeps coming; we keep dancing, dining, and having fun all summer long, and we’d love to have you join us.
Also, if you haven’t downloaded our mobile app, you may want to do that right now. On our app, you’ll be able to access all of the events and activities at parks across the Valley, and it will even give you directions to get there. “Easy” button? Yep!
Our bus tours to places like the King Ranch and Corpus Christi--and the upcoming Shop Hop--will pick you up and then take care of everything along the way. Same thing with our group cruises. And did you know we can plan just about anything for you and a group of your own? Whether it’s a trip to the Hill Country or a family-reunion cruise, we can plan your next adventure, and you can leave your worries behind. Just ask the 268 cruisers who joined us on the 6th Annual Cruise with Kristi. (Kristi--that’s me!)
If you feel you must go, I’d like to invite you to help us spread the word about South Texas to everyone you meet along the way and those you see every day back home. Invite them to join you next season! We would love to have them join us. The more the merrier!
This September, we will host our second, not so annual (thanks to the pandemic), Winter Texan Reunion Tour, so we’d also like to invite you to join us at one of our stops. Stay tuned as we announce our travel plans.
It has been a real pleasure to serve you this year. We will work throughout the summer months on all of our programming so next season will be even better than this one!
The RGV CAF Lands a New Home

Safe travels, Y’all! •
We’re just connecting the dots, Kristi
The Commemorative Air Force (CAF), with chapters across the United States, was born in Mercedes, Texas, according to David Hughston, a member of the RGV Wing of the CAF.
THANK YOU TO OUR 2022-2023 SEASON SPONSORS
THANK YOU TO OUR 2021-2022
SPONSORS
The local branch of the CAF recently found a new home, in a World-War-II-era hangar at the Port Isabel/Cameron County Airport near Bayview, Texas.
It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating the long-awaited return of so many of our friends. Now, here we are bidding you farewell and safe travels. All of us at Welcome Home RGV look forward to your return. Plans are

the hangar, and a gunnery range-which is now part of the Laguna Atascosa Wildlife Refuge, where gunners were trained to shoot moving targets.
“You can still see remnants of the berms or levees they built,” says Hughston.
The base was decommissioned after WWII and recommissioned again for the Korean and Vietnam wars. “This place is chock-full of history; it’s very historically significant,” shares Hughston.
While it’s not clear when the airport tower was constructed-possibly during the Korean or Vietnam conflicts, Hughston says--the hangar is a remnant of the original base. It has a unique, wooden, arched-roof structure, which Hughston reports was replicated by the federal
government in hangar designs all over the country.
In the 1950s, Hughston says, a group of crop-duster pilots, who were also WWII veterans, discovered that no efforts were being made to preserve the aircraft that had played such a vital role in the war.
They began purchasing surplus aircraft and dubbed themselves the Confederate Air Force (CAF), incorporating a few tongue-incheek traditions along the way. Originally housed in an old duster strip in Mercedes, the CAF moved to the Harlingen Airport in the 1960s. Subsequently, the headquarters was moved to Midland, Texas.
They accumulated so many aircraft, the CAF began to farm out the aircraft care and

preservation to other sites around the country. The RGV CAF later relocated to Brownsville, where it stayed for 30 years, and the entire organization underwent a name change from Confederate to Commemorative.
The new location houses some of the local, privately owned collection, including a PT-17 Stearman, a Ryan PT-22, and a Fairchild PT-26. A tour of the hangar offers up valuable insight into the design, purpose, and historic contributions of each aircraft.
Adjacent to the hangar space is a small museum. A treasure trove of historical moments, this is museum director Eddie Roberts’ domain. Roberts was a young child in Great Britain during the blitz on London and recalls the flashes, bangs, and search lights spanning the sky.
He readily points out details about each case, packed with information and memorabilia from subjects such as Pearl Harbor and the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) who flew planes to air bases for use in battle.
The RGV CAF hopes to create
a permanent home on site at the Cameron County Airport. In the meantime, the current museum display features about 25% of its collection, along with the aircraft and large, intricate dioramas depicting momentous wartime scenes.
Hughston succinctly sums up the motivation behind the volunteers at the RGV CAF: “If we don’t keep telling the story of our aviation heritage, who’s going to tell it?”
Everything is a teaching tool, as Roberts references the CAF motto, Lest We Forget. “I know I shall never forget,” he shares, referencing the American bombers supporting England.
The all-volunteer organization not only maintains the aircraft and the museum, but it also offers individual rides in a WWII aircraft over the Laguna Madre and Port Isabel for $250 or over South Padre Island for $350 and hosts the RGV CAF Airshow the first full weekend in October.
The RGV Wing of the CAF also hosts movie nights at the hangar. The next event is March 3 at 6:30 p.m. featuring James A. Michener’s The Bridges at Toko-Ri. For more information and directions to the remote destination, call 956-4798585, and visit them on Facebook at facebook.com/RGVCAF. •

Help Provide a Veteran a Custom Canine
Prom-themed event February 22 in Brownsville
Sunset Palms RV and Mobile Home Park and Breeze Lake Campground in Brownsville are teaming up to host a fundraiser that can change the life of a veteran. Wednesday, February 22, they will host a promthemed fundraiser at Breeze Lake, located at 1710 N. Vermillion Ave. One-hundred percent of the funds raised that day will go to Custom Canines, a nonprofit organization run by volunteers--professionals and others--who create and support lasting partnerships between highly skilled service dogs and individuals who need them.
Last year, Sunset Palms and Breeze Lake hosted two fundraisers; however, this year, they are only able to host one, and their fundraising goal is $5,000-the cost of one service dog. This dog will be provided to a veteran in need.
Raffle prizes include, but are not limited to, a flyover with the Confederate Air Force; a golf trifecta, 18 holes at all of the golf courses in Brownsville; and a private, one-hour dolphin encounter for up to six people. Additional raffle-prize donations would be greatly appreciated. Entertainment will be provided by the ever-popular Leslie Blasing, and there will be lots more to do. Because the event is prom-themed, have some fun and dress accordingly (though not required).
To offer a raffle-prize donation or for more information, please contact Mel at 956-831-4427.

SAVORY TREATS SWEET CRAVINGS
RECIPE CONNECTION
••• Some Like It Hot
Oreo Cheesecake (Serves 12)
Junior League of McAllen, Inc.
NOTE: Thank you to reader Jenavie for letting us know the amount of flour was missing for this recipe in our February 1 issue. Sorry about that!
Crust
30 Oreo cookies
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Lightly butter pan. Break up cookies and place in a food processor fitted with a metal blade; process until crumbs. Add butter and mix until blended. Pour into 9-inch or 10-inch springform pan. Press evenly over bottom and two-thirds up sides of pan. Refrigerate while preparing filling.
Filling
4 (8 oz.) packages cream cheese
3 large egg yolks at room temperature
1/3 cup whipping cream
1¼ cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons cake flour
18 Oreo cookies, chopped into quarters
4 large eggs at room temperature
In a large bowl, beat cream cheese with mixer on medium speed until smooth. Scrape down sides of bowl and add sugar, beating until mixture is fluffy—about 3 minutes. Mix in flour. Continue beating and add eggs and yolks; mix until smooth. Beat in whipping cream and vanilla. Pour half of the batter into prepared crust. Sprinkle with quartered Oreos. Pour remaining batter over cookies. Place pan on baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes. Reduce oven to 225 degrees and bake for an additional 50 minutes or until set. Remove cake from oven and increase oven temperature to 350 degrees.
Topping
2 cups sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ cup sugar
In a small bowl, stir together sour cream, sugar, and vanilla. Spread sour cream mixture evenly on top of cake. Return to 350-degree oven and bake for 7 minutes or until sour cream begins to set. Remove from oven and cool in draft-free place to room temperature. Cover cake in pan and
refrigerate several hours or overnight. This cake may be refrigerated up to 3 days, or it may be frozen for 1 month, as long as it is covered well. Thaw in refrigerator overnight before serving. Before serving, remove sides of springform pan. Serve chilled.
Winners of Llano Grande Quilt Show Announced
In spite of the cool weather January 31, a crowd of over 800 quilt lovers warmed themselves by viewing a display of 221 items at the 13th Annual Quilt Show held at the Llano Grande Event Center in Mercedes, according to quilt show chairperson Doree Leither.
The Quilt Show, Mercedes Mineral Matrix, featured wall hangings, bed quilts, scrap quilts, totes, and throws. In addition, there was a boutique featuring gently used and new handcrafted items for sale and a number of communityservice quilts, sold to earn money for additional projects in this area.
The high point of the afternoon was the presentation of Best of Show to Monica Myers for her large, paperpieced quilt, Alchemist’s Crystals. This pattern, by Quiltworx, featured a misty gray background offset by bright turquoise, red, and orange accents. Monica, who hails from Evansdale, Iowa, made this work of art with silk batting and did the longarm quilting on it herself.
Jani Shoemaker won the Quilt Challenge competition, which stipulated that the competitors design a small quilt showing what they “dig” about Mercedes. There were quilts with boots and outdoor scenes, but Jani won with
her colorful rendition of a patchwork Longhorn steer, commemorating the Livestock Show held in Mercedes each year. There were a number of other winners during the afternoon. Mandy Kellum, a third- grade teacher from Slidell, Louisiana, was the winner of the Opportunity Quilt. Members have been selling tickets for this quilt since last spring. Mandy is the daughter of Kathy
and Danny Zeigler of Llano Grande RV Park and Resort. It was Kathy who sold Mandy the winning ticket. When she was called, Mandy was pretty excited, saying “I’ve never won anything this nice before! It’s a beautiful quilt!”
Other lucky recipients included Linda Ingram, winning the new Janome sewing machine provided anonymously by a member of the Quilting Bee.
Over 20 totes were raffled off that afternoon. as well, all of them filled with items to fit the theme of each
tote. There were beach totes, pet totes, coffee/chocolate totes, and kitchen totes. In addition, there were door prizes announced throughout the day, making it possible for many people to go home winners!
The Llano Grande Quilting Bee would like to thank all of the members of the public who came to enjoy the beautiful machine and handcrafted items and attend the demonstrations.
Next year’s Quilt Show will be held January 30, 2024. •

What is More Comforting Than a Quilt?
One of the ways the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild shares their love of quilting is by providing military quilts for resident veterans in the Rio Grande Valley. During the Winter Texan season, the Guild has about 300 members. It is during this time that the Guild sponsors Military Sew events in several parks in the Valley to bring volunteers together to sew and assemble the quilts.
January 20, Trophy Gardens RV Park in Alamo sponsored an RGV Quilt Guild Military Sew. Volunteers from the Park and Guild members from several other parks arrived to spend the day constructing and bundling quilts to be sent to a longarm quilter for completion. There were 40 volunteers in attendance, representing five additional parks (besides Trophy Gardens).
At noon, the group got together for a light luncheon before heading back to work. The luncheon, prepared by volunteers, was made possible by generous donations from local grocery stores. Thank you to Junior’s
Supermarket in San Juan, H-E-B in Alamo, and Walmart in Alamo. Their donations were greatly appreciated by the Guild and the volunteers.
At the end of the day, there were 11 quilts bundled (matching the quilt top, batting, and quilt bottom together), 11 additional quilt tops completed, and six lap quilts ready for veterans in wheelchairs. It was a very successful day!
This year, the Guild will be presenting quilts to veterans during the RGV Quilt Show held on South Padre Island. Veterans are recommended to the Guild through a nomination process. To qualify to receive a quilt for military service, the nominee must be a year-round resident of the Rio Grande Valley.
The Guild is looking forward to continuing this work and providing even more quilts in the future through this program. •
Get Creative on South Padre Island
M ay 13, 2022, The Art Lounge opened its doors as South Padre Island’s newest art center. Its mission is to grow awareness and appreciation of the arts while fostering a community that shares the same vision. The Art Lounge, located at the Sea Ranch Marina, converted one of the barns into an amazing gallery. Tour the Historic, Iconic, Legendary King Ranch
by Eryn Reddell WingertJ
ust up the road in Kingsville, Texas, sits the vast King Ranch, notorious not only for its size--currently over 800,000 acres--but also for its incredible impact on ranching in Texas.
Tours & Travel by Welcome Home offers a day-trip tour via motorcoach, with two Valley pick-up points. The ride is about one and a half hours from the RGV. Once at the Ranch, an expert guide boards the bus and navigates a tour through the ranchland and its 160-year history.
The Ranch tour is followed by a barbecue lunch piled high with brisket, as well as sausage, beans, potato salad, bread with sauce, onions, pickles, jalapeño fixings, and a cookie. A stop at the King Ranch Museum and Henrietta Memorial Center further expands on the generational legacy of the Ranch.
Lastly, the King Ranch Saddle Shop, situated in downtown Kingsville, showcases luxury leather goods alongside stuffed longhorn, bobcat, and nilgai--Indian antelope first introduced to South Texas via the King Ranch. The fun doesn’t end there; the motorcoach ride home
includes playing bingo for door prizes!
Tours by Welcome Home hosted its first venture to the King Ranch in January. Reactions included the following: "Your tours do not disappoint! We had such a wonderful

The Yarn Party Continues…
…and y’all are welcome to join in! This winter season is flying by, and we are all having a blast. It is such a blessing to welcome back so many friends this year and meet new friends just joining the party. So what is going on at The Lamb’s Loom? Well, we are glad you asked. We have stuffed Knitted Knockers together and helped each other out with projects. There’s always someone sharing a great pattern idea or chiming in with another stitch we all want to learn. We have counted the items in the Donation Chest and helped fill it up all over again. Our classroom is full of fiber fun, and the sit-n-knits are overflowing with show-n-tell. We have emptied the coffee pot and finished off a plate of cookies, too!
This past year, our Donation Chest overflowed almost weekly. In total, there were 5,675 items made and donated, then sent out with over 20 mission groups all over the world. Helping these groups serve and encourage others, with a little warmth wrapped up in a yarn hug, is an amazing blessing to be a part of every day.
So to answer your question, it all knits up together to become our

Game Show A GOGO Performs Fabulous Feud at Tropic Winds
In January, Greg and Julie Linhoff hosted Fabulous Feud at Tropic Winds RV Resort to over 180 guests. Fabulous Feud is similar to the popular game Family Feud. Guests had a great time playing the game-and watching, too.
“We had such a great time at Fabolous Feud when it came to Tropic Winds in January here in the RGV!” said Scott Wilson, one of the contestants. “The crowd was really into it, and many of the answers were hilarious. We were lucky enough to get called up as one of the teams. It’s more challenging than you might think when you are on the spot to answer, but our team did great. The host is a funny guy who did a great job of playing off of people’s answers, with humorous comments and good-natured teasing. We are definitely going to show (up) the next time it is in the area!”
Greg and Julie Linhoff have been
entertaining groups for over 10 years. The game features a faceoff, sound effects, podiums for contestants, shimmering backdrops, and more.

Sandy Shares a Popular Recipe from California
By Sandy OlsonThis recipe sure sounds like Texas, but it’s from the Cutler Bay area of California. They love spicy foods there, as we do. Try serving this one with chili to your hot-pepper-lovin’ friends!
Cornbread with a Kick
2/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 large egg
2/3 cup yellow cornmeal
1 cup buttermilk
1 tablespoon sugar
3 tablespoons real butter
½ teaspoon baking powder
3 canned chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, drained and chopped
½ teaspoon salt
6 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled
¼ teaspoon baking soda
NOTE: You can substitute the real bacon pieces that come already cooked in a large plastic bag but NEVER those fake “bacon bits” in a jar.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the first six ingredients and blend well. In another bowl, whisk the egg and buttermilk.
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Place the butter into an 8-inch, oven-proof skillet, such as a cast iron skillet. Heat the skillet in the oven for 3-5 minutes; you want the metal to be heated through. Meanwhile, stir the egg mixture into the dry ingredients, just enough to moisten them with no dry spots showing. Fold in the chopped peppers and crumbled bacon. Carefully swirl the butter to coat the sides and bottom of the hot skillet and add the batter. Bake for 1822 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cut into wedges and serve warm with lots of real butter (no margarine, please)!
