L et’s talk about music! Here, there, and just about everywhere in South Texas, there is entertainment to be found. The variety and quality of music is second to none. You can go hear mariachis right before a good polka. jam sessions, happy hours, events with entertainment, and concerts are all just waiting for our Winter Texans to enjoy. This is just one more reason to come to the Rio Grande Valley each winter.
And just like that, this is the last Welcome Home Winter Texan of the season! It has been a wonderful winter, and we have enjoyed sharing it with you!
I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to stick around, to extend your stay for a few days, weeks, months... or even indefinitely! The fun keeps coming; we keep dancing, dining, and having fun all summer long, and we’d love to have you join us.
If you feel you must go, I’d like to invite you to help us spread the word about South Texas to everyone you meet along the way and those you see every day back home. Invite them to join you next season! We would love to have them join us. The more the merrier!
I would like to applaud our musicians for their time and talents, keeping us all entertained. For those of us who aren’t musically inclined, like myself, your ability to please the crowd never ceases to amaze me. I leave some shows exhausted just from watching all of the energy on stage!
This September, we will host our second, not so annual (thanks to the pandemic), Winter Texan Reunion Tour, so we’d also like to invite you to join us at one of our stops. Stay tuned as we announce our travel plans.
The season is far from over, and I encourage you to get in as many shows as you can, no matter what your taste in music might be!
It has been a real pleasure to serve you this year. We will work throughout the summer months on all of our programming so next season will be even better than this one!

Retired band director and trumpet player Gene Goedy of Minnesota has been wintering in South Texas for 31 years. He has been with the Ensemble for about 15 years. “I enjoy the music they pick out. The last show was superhero-themed. It was just fun stuff.”
When he’s not playing in the McAllen Wind Ensemble, Goedy is the director of the Rio Grande Valley Concert Band, made up primarily of Winter Texans.
Behind the second tuba from the right is Rita Christenson-Boyd, a Llano Grande Resort resident by way of Minnesota. ChristensonBoyd started playing the tuba 61 years ago. After raising kids and pursuing other interests, she says,
“It just sort of hit me that I should play my tuba again.” And she loves it.
Over the past 10 years, Christenson-Boyd has been an avid volunteer, taking on tasks such as setting up the lighting when the venue was a local church and taking on ticket sales.
Her hard work over the years makes her all the more appreciative of the band’s latest venue, the McAllen Performing Arts Center, a state-of-the-art theater that opened in 2016.
The band also holds rehearsals at McAllen’s Las Palmas Community Center. “We’re so thankful to the City of McAllen for their sponsorship and supporting our efforts,” says Olivarez.

Ensemble. “That’s what a community organization like ours takes,” says clarinet musician and Ensemble board member Jon Stevens. “All those different partners and organizations allow us to exist.”
All for the love of music; from the musicians who enjoy performing with a band, to the rich cultural experiences they provide the community.
This is what motivates Olivarez to drive nearly 80 miles round-trip from his hometown of Rio Grande City to McAllen for rehearsals and concerts: “The love for music” and to carry on the legacy of the directors who came before him, including his own high school band director, Henry Rodriguez.
The McAllen Wind Ensemble is comprised of 60-70 volunteer musicians of varying ages and backgrounds--music educators, former marching-band members, retirees, former military, parents, students, medical professionals, and even professional performers.
Deone Johnson, a relatively new Winter Texan via Wisconsin, played trumpet professionally for 15 years. He humbly shares the legendary
performers he’s accompanied. “Sammy [Davis, Jr.] was magical. Andy Williams was magical. Aretha Franklin was wonderful.”
This is Johnson’s second year with the Ensemble. And like Christenson-Boyd, he’s also quite impressed with the venue. “Playing at the Performing Arts Center is tremendous. It’s wonderful.”
The McAllen Wind Ensemble hosts concerts November, December, February, and April. The final concert of the season is themed Memories, with music selected specifically to evoke a memory or life experience from a television show, a church, or a rock concert.
During a recent rehearsal, Olivarez, who serves as the band’s musical director, stood centerpoint offering instruction, direction, and encouragement. He raised his arms, baton in hand, peering over his glasses to assess the readiness of the musicians…a brief moment of silence. He gestures and music engulfs the small hall.
“This fills a void in my world,” Olivarez shared earlier in the evening, “to make music.”
Memories is scheduled for April 2 at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $10 at the Box Office. Visit mcallenwindensemble. org for more information. •

Red Hat Society Festival of Tables
Story
and photos by
Eryn Reddell Wingert
It was a sea of royal red and purple at the Red Hat Festival of Tables at the Llano Grande Event Center in Mercedes February 15. Approximately 200 women were in attendance, wearing varying shades of purple and a variety of red hats.
The Festival of Tables is a social gathering of the Red Hat Society. Tables were elaborately decorated based on an individual theme, from movies like The Wizard of Oz to the patriotic and springtime.
The presentation included lunch, door prizes; an introduction of officers, including Queen of Queen’s Sandra (Finny) Funk, Vice Queen Margie Peart, Scribe Sharon Newcomer, and Treasurer Marge Hamburg; followed by guest speaker Marcy La Salle from the Red Hat Society and a performance by entertainer Justin Terry.
Past Exalted Queen of the Rio Grande Valley Queens Counsel Jan Bergman shared this about the event and the group in general: “The Red Hatters is mainly to have fun. It’s like ‘I’ve done for others all my life; I’m just going to do something for me.’ That’s who we are.” •

Stitching it Forward
We want y’all to meet our summer and youth volunteers. They are the best-est!
Last summer, we were blessed with an amazing group of volunteers. These students came in for the summer to get volunteer hours to meet their school requirements. We were blessed to reap the rewards of joy and friendship from that requirement. A few of our volunteers are mother/daughter teams; what a treasure of time to share.
These volunteers were the ones who provided the “muscle” for the special projects we did over the summer. As many of you have already seen, we have a new Sit-n-Knit area outside, and it is lovely. Peggy’s Porch is definitely a work of love. These girls got to work with their drills, saws, and paintbrushes--in our South Texas 100°-plus heat--and helped produce a beautiful space for us all to enjoy.
All of our summer youth volunteers are taught how to loom knit first, just to be able to help out in our Sit-nKnit spaces when anyone needs a little help getting started. They also volunteer to teach our crochet and knitting “learn2” classes, whenever needed. During a summer day, you can usually find them tackling a
project, like sorting the Donation Chest or putting the donated yarn into the right tubs. And when all the
sorting is completed, they are off to the Sit-n-Knit area to work on another item for the Donation Chest.
8PC LEGS & THIGHS
Since last summer, our student volunteers have kept coming in to help with special events or Saturday business, so we do hope you will be blessed to meet a few of these amazing young ladies. In everything our volunteers do, the most wonderful things they bring with them are their joy and their love of serving others. They are an inspiration and encouragement for us all to keep on stitching it forward. It is wonderful to spend time with so much enthusiasm, so we hope you will stop by before you head north. And when you aren’t here at home in South Texas, you can join us on our website at thelambsloom. com for updates throughout the year. Also, follow us on Facebook and Instagram. And, of course, we have lots of fun articles right here in Welcome Home Winter Texan. The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue.
We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
We truly appreciate all of our PEGs! You can be a PEG, too! Pray. Encourage. Give. Remember, The Lamb’s Loom is not just a yarn shop; it’s a ministry and a mindset. •

Auction Fans Enjoy Lively Event at La Floresta
by Arleen Bier, La Floresta
E
ach year, an auction is held at La Floresta Park in Mercedes. Some parks have park sales to get rid of unwanted stuff. We have an auction! Throughout the year, residents collect items to donate to the auction. We have really good stuff. The sale includes furniture, electrical appliances, printers, decorative pieces, dishes, golf clubs, golf balls, and more. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure.
A member of the committee explained the procedures for the auction: “Everyone donates stuff and then buys it back. You also make desserts and then buy those back.” It is a good fundraiser for the Park. Proceeds are used to fund Park activities.
Rickey Henderson, our resident auctioneer, is entertaining, as well as very animated when getting people to bid on items. Normally he starts out with a relatively low price to attract a large number of bidders. He begins with, “Two-anda-half? Two-and-a-half? It is surely worth two-and-a-half! Now five? Five? Five? Five? I got five! Now seven-and-a-half? Seven-and-ahalf? SOLD for seven-and-a-half!”
Multiple groups of smaller items are put together. Rickey said, “It looks good, but I don’t know what it is! Come on! Two-and-a-half? I got two-and-a-half. Now five? Now 10? Now 15? Sold!”
We had three griddles. “The cords are even with them!” exclaimed Rickey. “Next up is a box of craft items. Could be gold in there!”
As the bidding begins, it goes quickly. Bidders need to pay attention because if they don’t keep their card number raised, the auctioneer says, “Sorry. You missed out on a bargain!”
Big Valley Quilters Club Show Appreciation With Every Stitch
M embers of the Big Valley Quilters Club recently presented patriotic-themed lap quilts to 29 veterans at Big Valley at its annual Veterans Appreciation Program. Our veterans represent all branches of our military and span from WW2 through the Gulf conflicts. This is our way of showing our appreciation for their selfless service to our country. •
“Five? Five? Five?” Rickey asks. “OK. Two-and-a-half? Twoand-a-half? Put something more with it. Put all that garbage over there together. OK. Two-and-ahalf? I got two-and-a-half! Now five?”
Then he says, “Here is a pair of speakers. This is a really good deal. They cost $85 online. Thirty? I got 30. Now 35. Thirtyfive? Sold for 30! I lied about looking them up online. It ain’t the first time I lied.”
And the sale continues. Food prices are cut in half, causing a run on the food court.
“We have a collection of kitchen stuff,” Rickey announced. “Some of you old people remember jelly jars. You can take it home and give it to your mother-in-law.”
“We have a freshly made pecan pie. The recipe is 20 years old! The recipe, not the pie,” Rickey clarified.
“Here is a printer. Actually. we have four printers. Let’s start the bid at two-and-a-half. Two-and-ahalf, and your choice of printers. I got two-and-a-half. Do I have five? Five? Five? SOLD for two-and-ahalf. Give her all four printers for that price.”
As a new collection of assorted knickknacks and dishes are presented, Rickey says, “You might get a good deal or you might get screwed!” A large number of individual items for sale pass through the auction quickly.
“What is that?” Ricky asks as a committee member holds up a box of miscellaneous items. After the bidding ends, Rickey says, “I didn’t think we’d ever sell that!”
The auction finally comes to a close…until next year, when we will probably see some of these same things at the auction! •

$250 for a Pie
by Ruth Filz, Palm Gardens RV Park
Who would have thought selling a rhubarb pie for $55 dollars in 2015 would lead to selling an apple pie for $250 and raising $2,580 for charities in 2023?
In 2015, Phyllis Tillotson asked Vonnie Jones if she would bake a rhubarb pie to sell at Palm Gardens RV Park’s Annual Park Auction. It was the first time a pie was sold at the auction. There was a bidding war--between Phyllis and Roger Jacobs--for the pie. Roger ultimately got the pie with a $55 bid. As events were planned for the following year, it was decided to add a Pie Auction to our calendar and donate the money to local charities.
Phyllis and her husband, Kermit, came to Palm Gardens in 2004 from Mound View, Kansas, and fell in love with the Park and its residents. Phyllis was active in the Park, playing cribbage every chance she had; spoiling her cat and Kermit’s dog, Jack; doing blood-pressure checks at the weekly Koffee Klatch; helping out wherever needed, and making the best lasagna (according to their daughter). Oh, yes…and she loved pies!
Phyllis passed away in 2018. In recognition of Phyllis’ involvement in
the Park and that she first suggested selling a pie at our auction, the Pie Auction became the Phyllis Tillotson Memorial Pie Auction and is held every year in her memory.
This year, the Park sold a variety of pies and cakes, including Vonnie Jones’ rhubarb pie. We raised $2,580 for charities, and residents enjoyed some delicious desserts.
Over the past several years, we have made donations to the following charities with the proceeds from our Pie Auction:

Valentines for Veterans
by Stacy McDonald, Mission West Church
H olidays can be a lonely time for many people. This is especially true for those individuals who find themselves living in long-term-care facilities, such as the Alfredo Gonzalez State Veterans Home in McAllen.
This loneliness is even more heartbreaking when experienced and endured by those who have given so much of themselves in service to, and in protection of, our country. That is why as Valentine’s Day was approaching, Mission West Church prayerfully decided to do something extra special to combat that loneliness in the hearts of veterans who reside at the Alfredo Gonzalez State Veterans Home.
Mission West Churches Valentines for Veterans campaign spread over a two-week period, with churchgoers taking time out after the church services each week during cookieand-coffee fellowship to lovingly fill out Christian-themed Valentine cards. After two weeks, over 95 cards had been completed and slipped into their beautiful, scripture-inspired, sticker-clad envelopes, along with a special gift consisting of a star taken from a decommissioned American
flag. The envelopes also contained a heartfelt message and Bible verse, courtesy of the Warrior 180 Foundation (warrior180.org)
The folks at Mission West Church pray that their small token of love and gratitude served to bless the hearts of these precious veterans and was pleasing to God, as they seek to spread the love of Jesus through obedience to His words found in Matthew 25:3536: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
Mission West Church is a nondenominational church that meets on Sundays at 10 a.m. and is located inside Mission West Resort RV Park at 511 E Loop 374 in Palmview. For more information, contact Pastor Mark McDonald at mrmcdonald41@ yahoo.com. •

Perspectives Simple Faith
by Stacy McDonald
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.
~John 3:16
Sounds simple enough: “… whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.” The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. And therein lies the problem, the obstacle, if you will, to this simple answer to the most important question: Who, then, can be saved?
It is one thing to confess belief with our mouths, but it is quite another to believe in our hearts that God hath raised Jesus from the dead. If we truly believe this in our hearts, it will naturally lead to a life pointed solely toward serving the Lord in humble obedience. This serving, of course, is not our saving grace; it is certainly not our ticket to heaven. It is, however, the measuring rod of our faith in Christ.
Are we willing to lay down our lives and pick up His in return? Are we willing to be forgotten…rejected…
Stacy McDonald and her husband, Chaplain Mark McDonald, serve at Mission West RV Park in Mission. They are with Christian Resort Ministries, which provides RV resorts throughout the RGV non-denominational worship services. You can contact the McDonalds for their worship times at Mrmcdonald41@yahoo.com.
to gladly serve at what society would deem “the bottom,” or are we set on studying and rehearsing and decreeing the philosophies of man in an attempt to show we know the Word of God? Are we looking to elevate ourselves by being pumped up with “knowledge,” or is the Word of God enough for us as it should be anyone who has faith the size of a mustard seed?
Those who believe in Jesus have need of nothing else, so no matter their stage of sanctification, you will be able to recognize them by their singular focus on Jesus. While others debate this or that theology or way, the true believer will be found proclaiming the name above all
names through the mundane tasks of everyday life and through their treatment of those around them. Even now, someone will argue with the simplicity of this statement, further proof of the world’s hatred of the Word.
Many will find these “simple believers” to be odd and will have a distaste for them that they cannot truly explain. This stands to reason since they are no longer of this world and because Jesus said it would be so. Yes, many will say, just as they did 2000+ years ago, that these simple folks are ignorant and
uneducated and, as a result, are not truly saved or are basing their beliefs on some erroneous doctrine. Attempting to save them through the ways of man, many will try to divert the ones on the narrow path onto the broad way to destruction. It’s a test every believer will face, often multiple times in their lives, and it can only be passed when a heart is set on nothing but faith in Jesus. But without faith, it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. ~Hebrews 11:6. •

During last 15 minutes of baking time, bring 1/3 cup sugar and 3 tablespoons lemon juice to a boil in a small saucepan, stirring until sugar dissolves. Pierce top of hot loaf several times with a toothpick. Pour hot lemon mixture over loaf while still in pan. Cool 30 minutes in pan on rack. Turn bread out of pan; cool completely on rack.

Sandy Shares a Popular Recipe from Wyoming
By Sandy Olson
Claudia, a friend here at Palm Shadows RV Park, told me about Chugwater Chili, the very popular Wyoming tradition that includes an annual cook-off in the town with the same name. You can purchase Chugwater chili seasoning there or online, but for this recipe, you can substitute any high-quality chili seasoning mix from the grocery store. The cook-off started in 1986 and is still going strong!
Chili Tot Casserole
1 pound lean ground beef
1 cup water
½ cup chopped yellow onion
1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce OR diced tomatoes
3 tablespoons Chugwater Chili Seasoning
1 package (28 oz.) frozen potato tots
1 can (15 oz.) pinto beans
2-3 cups shredded cheddar cheese blend
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a medium, heavy saucepan, brown the ground beef. When brown, add onion and cook about 5 minutes. Add the chili seasoning and mix to season the beef. Add the beans,
water, and tomato sauce (or tomatoes) and simmer for about 15 minutes. Pour this into a 9x13-inch baking pan and cover the top with a layer of the frozen tots. Bake, uncovered, for 30 minutes. Cover with the shredded cheese and bake for an additional 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted. Serve hot with salad and dessert.
Lifelong foodie, restaurant reviewer, cooking teacher, and summer Iowan Sandy Olson spends the Winter-Texan season at Palm Shadows RV Park in Donna. This season, Sandy will be sharing recipes from across the U.S. and Canada.
