I still have to pinch myself sometimes. Fifteen wonderful years serving the Winter Texan community! We’ve grown by leaps and bounds, and it is all because of your support and encouragement…well…that and an incredible team that works day in and day out to make sure the ship doesn’t sink.

I started this business on my dining room table 15 years ago, having been laid off from my “real” job. It has been the most exciting, rewarding, and sometimes scary journey, and I can’t wait to see where we grow from here.

I’m incredibly proud of the work we do, and yet at times, I forget how the smallest things we do can sometimes mean so much. I was brought to tears last week when Jeanie from the Lambs Loom stopped by and told me, “The work you do matters.”

I’m happy to say we have no plans to stop what we’re doing, and we know you’ll be right by our side.

Fifteen Years of Welcoming Fifteen Years of Welcoming Winter Texans to the RGV Winter Texans to the RGV

W elcome Home RGV officially celebrated its 15th anniversary Thursday, December 1, with an open house and ceremonial double-ribbon cutting at its McAllen office location.

“I started this business when I was laid off from my ‘real’ job,” shares owner Kristi Collier. “I wanted something part-time so I’d be home for school pickups.” (She then joked with her husband, Kevin, how she wasn’t home before 9 p.m. the night before the open house.)

Her daughter, Kirby, was in third grade back then. Kirby has since

graduated from the University of Texas--her father’s alma mater--and now works in Austin.

In a video-recorded message to her mom played during the event, Kirby claimed the title of Collier’s “Number 1 Fan” and recalled when the company was named “Welcome Wagon” and the signature color was green.

It’s hard to imagine green associated with Welcome Home, considering the color orange has been well established as its signature. A large gathering of Winter Texans in the Rio Grande Valley is bound to include at least

one bright orange Welcome Home RGV t-shirt or cap produced by the in-house Promotions Division.

Its Collier’s favorite color. She wears it with pride, as does her staff when called together for events like the annual Winter Texan Expo, Connection Fair, and Summer Supper Club or a Tours by Welcome Home excursion. They even wore orange while touring the Midwest.

Collier and her team have spent the past 15 years connecting visitors

to regional services and activities and singing (shouting from rooftops, really) the praises of South Texas as a winter destination. They also repeatedly spread the word on the importance of Winter Texans to the regional economy.

Putting an exclamation point on this particular subject was the Winter Texan Economic Impact Study commissioned by Welcome Home RGV, which emphatically showed winter visitors and their visiting friends and family contribute over $1 billion--that’s billion with a ‘b’ --to the Rio Grande Valley.

The study further showed that cities, businesses, health-care entities, organizations, nonprofits, tourist attractions--and more-benefit from the influx of retirees and RVers from October to March, not to mention those who take the leap to stay year round, dubbed Converted Texans.

The study emphasized the efforts of Welcome Home as essential to

the region, making the ceremonial ribbon cutting marking the anniversary all the more special.

As she held a giant pair of gold scissors, Collier gave a brief statement: “I just can’t believe it’s been 15 years. Sometimes it feels like five, and sometimes it feels like 50. Owning your own business can be a challenge, but it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.”

On the count of three, surrounded by her husband, staff, and ambassadors from the McAllen and Edinburg chambers of commerce, Collier cut two ribbons, one representing each chamber. There were selfies and group photos. Then, before cake, Leigh Wooldridge with Welcome Home summed it up for the staff: “We’re all proud and honored to work alongside of you (Collier) in this journey.”

Collier readily shares credit with her staff. “It’s definitely a team effort!” (Many even continued to

North-Carolina-Based Nu-Blu Will Wow Winter Texan Expo Fans

A fter releasing four Top 10 Billboard albums, North-Carolina-based Nu-Blu has quickly established themselves as one of the top acoustic acts in the music industry, delivering a set of songs that range from the melancholy to the exuberant.

Hailing from Siler City, North Carolina, Nu-Blu’s heart and soul is husbandand-wife duo Daniel and Carolyn Routh. Carolyn’s caramel-coated soprano is one of the band’s defining traits, at times a tender lullaby and at times a freight train headed straight for you-but always unwinding a surprising tale. Daniel is the group’s backbone, a multiinstrumentalist and backing vocalist who also handles band management. Austin Hefflefinger on banjo and Justin Harrison on mandolin round out the quartet’s warm, layered, Appalachian sound. Together they deliver upbeat, blazingfingers pick work, as well as gentle, heartwarming ballads.

The band got their start in September 2003. Just a few months after their

formation, their original record label folded, and Carolyn suffered a stroke that left her unable to speak, let alone sing. But barreling past those early

trials toughened them, and the muscle and calluses that came with them have led Nu-Blu to ever-new heights, with multiple runs on the radio charts

from their 2014 release, All The Way It featured the chart-topping Rhonda Vincent collaboration, “That’s What Makes the Bluegrass Blue,” along with “Jesus and Jones.”

Their 2017 album, Vagabonds , includes the poignant “A Lot More Love,” a simple, sincere invitation to build better bridges across a divided America, and the number-one hit, “640 Battlefield Drive,” a ballad about love of country, loss, and strength.

In 2019, they opened up like never before with their very special DVD project, The Stories We Can Tell. The collection featured a combination of music videos, accompanied by never-before-told stories about the band’s journey.

Nu-Blu is more focused and determined than ever to bring their music to more and more fans throughout the world.

You don’t want to miss Nu-Blu while they are in the Valley for the Winter Texan Expo. They will perform Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at 1:45 p.m. •

Shakespeare in the Rio Grande Valley

“Much ado about nothing” may be a quotation attributed to Shakespeare; however, the Shakespeare exhibit at the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum is Much ado about SOMETHING

Forty-three (24” x 40”) quilted wall hangings from the National Quilt Museum of Paducah, Kentucky, interpret him and his writings in an original form. The exhibit continues the over-400 years of interpreting and analyzing Shakespeare and his works.

How modern-day fiber artists/ quilters see him is shown in the firstplace winner, “Twelfe Night Vision” by Laura L Pomes of Frankfort, Illinois. She chose brocade fabrics that contain music and literature symbols and quilted with the feather stitch representing his writing tool. She embellished with beads and embroidery and shaded with colored pencils.

Second place went to “Come, You Spirits” by Rachel Burke of Bloomington, Indiana. Rachel’s quilt materialized out of her background in cross-stitching. She developed her original pattern, focusing on Lady Macbeth, who courted death. With

2,924 pieces of 2” squares, she highlighted Shakespeare’s repeated theme of death in the form of a smiling skull with varying shades of grey fabric.

Third place, “Sonnet 30” by Roxi Kringle of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, takes a different spin. She uses color and the rail fence pattern with a modern approach to interpret Shakespeare’s sonnets, revealing the syllables in a rhyming pattern. She ends this wall hanging with his signature.

Using traditional quilt blocks of their own choosing, unusual fabrics,

and a fascinating array of materials, these quilt artists conger up the Bard’s tales of witches, fairies, spirits, whimsy, vengeance, death, and love in a unique way.

Twenty-two states and three countries are represented in this traveling contest and exhibit, New Quilts From an Old Favorite, held every two years. It is sponsored by Moda Fabrics and Janome and underwritten locally by the RGV Museum Volunteers Association. Entrance is free; donations are appreciated.

Information about entering the biannual contest can be found at quiltmuseum.org/NQOF2024.

The exhibit will be open to the public from January 10 - April 10, 2023. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 – 4 p.m. The exhibit is closed Mondays. Group tours may be arranged by calling the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum, at 956-216-4901. The Museum is located at 2425 Boxwood Street in Harlingen. •

A Story of Faith and Community

It was a typical Saturday morning in March at Lemon Tree Estates (LTE), birds singing and the coffee crew getting ready for some donuts, a good cup of Joe, and great conversations. Most Winter Texans were still here.

I had been boiling water for moisture in my house as it had been a dry winter. This is something I have done many times over the years to keep dust down. In getting ready to head to the recycling center, I turned off the stove (or so I was convinced), removed the pan from the stove, and rinsed it out. I then replaced the wooden cover over the stove.

Koko and I headed out the door. I had already loaded my truck, so I put Koko in, and off we went. I stopped for gas just up the road, and when I was almost done, my phone rang. It was my next-door neighbor saying my house was on fire! He quickly asked me if Koko was in the house. I said no, I dropped him at my mom’s house. I told him, “Please call the fire department!”

I sped back home, my heart racing. I was filled with instant anxiety, not knowing what to expect or how bad it would be.

When I arrived home, flames were shooting up to five feet in the air, and my neighbor was spraying my house with his garden hose. When I approached him, we just hugged. I don’t really remember the words spoken at that moment because I was in shock.

The police were already on scene when I arrived Then the

fire department got there soon after. The police asked me what happened, and that’s when it hit me. It was my own fault. I fell into deep guilt. This terrible accident was at my hands, and that was hard to take.

It was a total loss, which did not surprise me after seeing the damage. It was hard to believe that much destruction happened in such a short time.

Thankfully, my faith has carried me through this incredible loss.

In the interim of mitigation and trying to salvage what we could, some of my very wonderful neighbors went by my folks’ house to offer support and help. I had many times felt the warmth of this community, where folks look out for one another and are like family. There was a trend of this happening over the next several weeks, and the Ladies Auxiliary took up collections, as well.

The Winter Texans and others in our little community shined brightly as they reached deep into their own to help a neighbor. The generosity was overwhelming and humbling.

I want to shout out to my brother, Stan, and his wife, Julie, as well as a good neighbor for their help with mitigation. I would also like to thank my folks, Al and Alice Rohr. If not for them, I don’t know what I would have done. They are steadfast rocks in my life, and my gratitude for them abounds.

Another mention is one of my employers, McAllen Valley Roofing. My co-workers there took up a collection, as well. I am very grateful to them for their generosity.

I am overwhelmed by all of the donations, and I am eternally grateful to all who reached out with love and support. You are truly the family I love, and I am blessed to be a part of. In the midst of all of this, a park model became available for sale in LTE, and I was able to buy it and stay right here in this great community.

My sincere gratitude to all who rose up to help, you will never know the light it left in my heart. May God bless us, Everyone! •

Peggy’s Porch

We all know people who travel, work around their house, or take up knitting for their summer vacation, and those are all fun ideas. But our volunteers decided to get ready for South Texas winters during this past summer. The last eight years, we have loved seeing so many of our Winter Texan friends returning to support this ministry; we just knew we needed to eke out a little more yarn-fun space around The Lamb’s Loom.

Well, Ann came up with a super fun design for our carport area. We have affectionately named it Peggy’s Porch after our dear friend, Peggy. She always loved sharing fiber fun with others, and we think she would have loved this new space for friends “in community.”

We are really blessed with the most wonderful friends and volunteers here at The Lamb’s Loom. They are amazing. For most of July, in 100F-plus heat, our group put their carpentry skills to work. There was hammering, sawing, painting, and lots of laughter. And at the end of it all, we have a second outdoor sit-n-knit area, with the coolest wind chimes ever!

We are looking forward to a lot of sit-n-knit time together with y’all this year, so come on over to our happy place for some fiber fun.

Winter Texans Return to the Rio Grande Valley

Even though we have been coming here for many years, we still find new things to do, new festivals to attend, new restaurants to try, and many treasures at flea markets and park sales. We appreciate the warm welcome we receive every year when we return to the Rio Grande Valley!

We stay at La Floresta near Mercedes, a small park where the residents are like one big family. With its par 3 golf course, many activities revolve around golf, but it is only one of many activities that bring residents together for fun and laughter.

Connie Kolynchuk, from Selkirk, Manitoba, is one of the residents who enjoys golfing at La Floresta. In the accompanying picture, she makes a birdie for

Had she been inside at the time of that strike, she most likely would not be here to tell us how grateful she is to be alive and for the help she has received since losing her home along with all of her possessions. Aris’ daughter, Shawma, had persuaded her mother to stay next door at her house to watch a television series with her, and Aris had obliged. Shawma’s persistence that Friday night helped save her mothers life!

Both Aris and Shawma work and live at AmeriCana The Birding Center RV Resort in Palmview. When the residents next door at Mission West Resort RV Park received word of what had happened to Aris, they quickly rallied together and began taking up both household and monetary donations. Mission West asked their resident chaplain, Mark, and his wife, Stacy, of Christian Resort Ministries to deliver those donations to Aris.

During their visit with Aris, they learned she is a woman of much faith. She expressed to them that one of her biggest heartaches was losing her Bible in the fire. Despite her losses, however, hope was radiating from her smile as she spoke of her faith in God, a faith that God was busy rewarding as He made known He already had someone working to help replace her Spanish Bible. So on top of sparing her life from the fire, God was sending His people to keep Aris’ faith alive in the face of much loss.

Chaplain Mark and Stacy were blessed to be a part of God’s plan for Aris. That’s what Christian Resort Ministries is all about, being outreach-oriented as we bring Christ to those who know--and don’t know-Him.

SAVORY TREATS SWEET CRAVINGS

RECIPE CONNECTION

Looking for that amazing treat that will satisfy your craving! Each week we will offer you a variety of recipes that you can try from those who truly enjoy food and want to share! •

••• Some Like It Hot •••

Sour Lemon Bars

Yield: 40 squares

Crust:

1½ cups cake flour

½ cup child unsalted butter, cut into pieces

¼ cup powdered sugar

½ teaspoon vanilla extract

1/8 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Line 9x9 baking pan with heavy foil, extending 1 inch above 2 sides of pan. Butter 2 uncovered sides of pan. Position rack in center of oven. Combine flour, powdered sugar, and salt in food processor. Add chilled butter and cut in, using on/off pulses, until mixture appears sandy. Add vanilla and process until dough begins to come together. Press down evenly into prepared pan. Bake crust 25-28 minutes or until golden brown.

Topping:

5 large eggs at room temperature

3 tablespoons cake flour

2 cups sugar

3 tablespoons grated lemon peel

1 cup strained fresh lemon juice

Reduce oven to 325 degrees.

While crust is baking, prepare topping. Whisk eggs and sugar in medium bowl to blend. Whisk in lemon juice, then flour. Strain into another bowl. Mix in grated lemon peel. Pour filling over hot crust. Bake until sides are set and filling no longer moves in center when pan is shaken, about 22 minutes. Cool on rack. Cover and chill at least 4 hours or overnight. Using foil sides as aid, lift dessert from pan. Fold down foil sides. Cut into 1-inch squares. (If foil does not lift out easily, you can cut squares while bars are still in baking pan.) •

Sandy Shares a Popular Recipe From Minnesota

F ish is synonymous with Minnesota. It’s the land of 10,000 lakes, after all! All “real” residents of the Gopher State love fish and prepare it hundreds of ways. While walleye is a universal favorite, it’s hard to find in South Texas, so we’ll look at a tilapia recipe. This mild white fish adapts itself to many flavors and cooking methods.

Tasty Tilapia

6 large tilapia fillets 1 cup packed, brown sugar

1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper, not pepper flakes

A shake of seasoned salt--not too much

A shake of garlic powder, not garlic salt

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Rinse the fillets and pat them semidry with paper towels. Combine the

remaining ingredients to make a seasoning blend. Rub this mixture on the fish. Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan or use parchment paper on the bottom. Place the fish in the pan. Bake for 15 minutes or until the fish flakes easily and is no longer transparent. If the fish is extra thick, give it another 5-8 minutes in the oven but test it every two minutes so it doesn’t dry out.

NOTE: Lutefisk, a Scandinavian favorite in Minnesota, is made with cod.

and Canada. If you have a favorite recipe from your “other” home you’d like to share, you can contact Sandy at midwestfoodie@gmail.com. •

Palmito Ranch Battlefield

The Battle of Palmito Ranch was the final land battle of the American Civil War. It was fought May 12013, 1865, along the banks of the Rio Grande, 13 miles east of Brownsville and 10 miles from the Union-held seaport of Los Brazos de Santiago at Texas’ southern tip. The battle, Confederate victory, took place more than a month after Gen. Robert E. Lee’s surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia to Union forces and 13 days before the Army of the TransMississippi under Gen. Edmund Smith surrendered in Galveston on May 26. There are currently no public services or facilities at this site.
