hello
And just like that, this is the last Welcome Home Winter Texan of the season! It has been a wonderful winter, and we have enjoyed sharing it with you!
I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to stick around, to extend your stay for a few days, weeks, months... or even indefinitely! The fun keeps coming; we keep dancing, dining, and having fun all summer long, and we’d love to have you join us.
I can’t tell you how happy I am that October is here! While it may be a bit early for some of our Winter Texans, I do know that many have already arrived and that, before we know it, our parks will be full again! That’s not to say we ever stopped. Our summer was filled with fellowship and fun. We ate our way through South Texas at our Summer Supper Club, and we even went on a few day trips.
All About Steve
If you feel you must go, I’d like to invite you to help us spread the word about South Texas to everyone you meet along the way and those you see every day back home. Invite them to join you next season! We would love to have them join us. The more the merrier!
Our office was full of life all summer long, planning new events, initiatives, and exciting tours for all of you. We also planned out our single activities, starting off with a supper club especially for singles, kicking off October 30.
This September, we will host our second, not so annual (thanks to the pandemic), Winter Texan Reunion Tour, so we’d also like to invite you to join us at one of our stops. Stay tuned as we announce our travel plans.
We brought back our All Roads Lead to Texas Tour and had a ball touring the Midwest, hosting events and gatherings from Sioux Falls to Davenport and all points in between. We were tourists in your back yard, saw as many sites as possible, and ate as much cheese as possible! I have to admit, the cool days were very well received!
It has been a real pleasure to serve you this year. We will work throughout the summer months on all of our programming so next season will be even better than this one!
There was an election last Winter Texan season, not at all contentious but, rather, very cute and loads of fun.
I can’t wait to see you all and show you what we’ve worked so diligently on, all in an effort to welcome you home!
Safe travels, Y’all!
Kristi
At stake: selecting an animal from the Gladys Porter Zoo’s adoptan-animal program. The voters: residents of Llano Grande Resort and Golf Club in Mercedes.
The candidates technically hailed from across the globe, even though they are all residents of the zoo. The ballot looked like

FAREWELL WINTER TEXAN
this: a kangaroo, a camel, a galago (a small, wide-eyed nocturnal primate, also known as a bush baby), a bat, a radiated tortoise, and a pygmy hippo named Steve. The pygmy hippo was dubbed Steve by Llano Grande resident Jim Holycross, who campaigned hard for the stout creature. He says the name just popped into his head, and he ran with it. Holycross became a campaign manager of sorts, even creating t-shirts with images of Steve’s chubby face. “He’d drive around the
neighborhood in his golf cart yelling, ‘Vote for Steve! Vote for Steve!’ says zoo docent Phoebe Holland. Well, Steve won by a landslide, becoming the poster animal, so to speak, for the resort’s fundraiser to support the Gladys Porter Zoo. Holland and fellow zoo volunteer Michelle Randolph pitched the fundraiser idea, and it was welcomed with overwhelming support by Llano Grande Resort management and residents.
“The next thing you knew, it was all about Steve!” Holland exclaims. And, the residents rallied around their “candidate,” raising $6,000. (While Steve is the “adopted” animal, the funds will be used for overall animal care and feeding.)
In March, dozens of excited Llano Grande residents, joined by zoo board members and staff, gathered around the perimeter of Steve’s habitat for the official check presentation.
Holycross, wearing a bright purple and pink hippo hat, and Randolph held the giant ceremonial check as other supporters cheered. For her efforts, Holland received a framed photo of the star pygmy hippo.
Even at first glance, Holland is an obvious lover of animals, in her “Llano Grande Residents Support Steve” t-shirt, dolphin earrings, and bat tattoo. “Animals have always been my favorite things,” she says, with the slightest catch in her voice.
If she’d had the choice, she said, she would have loved to have been a marine biologist. But, having grown up in Ontario, she
points out there weren’t a lot of oceans nearby. And, as a retired mental-health worker, she never thought she’d get the chance.
But that changed on a VIP zoo tour in 2017 when she learned about volunteer opportunities.
Holland signed up the very next day. Now, she and Randolph assist with various keeper duties, such as feeding the bats.
But if animals aren’t your thing, Holland assures there are all kinds of ways to volunteer, like manning the information booth and assisting with clerical work in the office.
The Gladys Porter Zoo volunteer program provides volunteer training, and trained volunteers become docents, according to Education Curator Sergio Garcia. “We love Winter Texans!
A lot of them have extra time to give, and it’s so helpful.”
It’s a win-win for both the Gladys Porter Zoo and volunteers like Holland. “It’s really nice, after 35 years of working with people, to now be working with animals,” she said.
To volunteer at the Gladys Porter Zoo, call 956-548WILD (9453), and for more information visit gpz.org. •

Alpaquita Ranch Hosts Tours by Welcome Home
Story and photos by Eryn Reddell WingertA few days after the official start of fall, the weather was warm, but with a hint of promise for cooler temperatures to come, when a tour group of about 20 descended on the Alpaquita Ranch.
The ranch, located northeast of Edinburg toward Raymondville, is home to over 50 alpacas, handpicked for temperament and, well, friendliness. The visitors, ranging in age from elementary students who had the day off from school to retirees, smiled and giggled as they were paired with their own alpaca to walk around the property. The group basically had the run of the ranch for a few hours, before regular tour hours opened later that day.
It was all coordinated by Tours by Welcome Home, which offers special tours to groups from resorts and RV parks in South Texas. This particular tour provided transportation from Eldorado Acres in Palmview to the ranch, an informative presentation on all things alpaca, the hands-on alpaca encounters (which includes walking and feeding), plus a class on alpaca wool--its different properties, multitude of uses, and natural hand-dyeing using dried flower petals, herbs, and even bugs.
If you are interested in Tours by Welcome Home, crafting a group excursion for your RV park or resort during the 2022-2023 Winter Texan season, ask your activity director to contact Sarah Denzer at 956-687-5115.

Knitted Knocker News from The Lamb’s Loom
T
he Lamb’s Loom is privileged to be a designated collection point for Knitted Knockers! We are so blessed to add the Knitted Knocker Organization to the many ministries we serve. For those who haven’t heard about Knitted Knockers, this is a wonderful organization dedicated to supplying breast prosthetics to women who have undergone mastectomies.
Knitted and crocheted “knockers” are made by using an approved yarn--for comfort and fit purpose-and are then stuffed with Polyfil. All of the yarns that have been approved have been tested to ensure they are soft and nonabrasive to the skin and are made of a breathable fiber. These provide an option to the heavy, and very hot, prosthetics those receiving them may currently be using. A Knitted Knocker is lighter weight, and with those breathable fibers, heat rash and other complications can be lessened. Knockers are given to each person at no cost to them, which serves as a gift of encouragement and as an option to those who may not be able to afford other prosthetics.
At The Lamb’s Loom, we carry four of the approved yarns. There is a special basket in our donation area just for donated Knockers. Every month or so, we have a
“stuffing party,” and friends gather to sort, stuff, and prepare the Knockers to go out to a local clinic. Once there, women are aided by their medical team to be fitted for just the right Knocker.
Please help us spread the word to anyone who would like to join in this outreach that The Lamb’s Loom is a recognized collection point for Knockers. You can make a Knocker, come to a stuffing party, donate Poly-fil, and most definitely pray for all the recipients. We currently serve two local clinics and a clinic just south of San Antonio.
There are so many ways to “stitch it forward,” and we would love y’all to join in! So let’s stay in touch all year. You can join us on our website at thelambsloom. com and follow us on Facebook and Instagram. And, of course, we have lots of fun articles right here in Welcome Home Winter Texan.
The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue.
We truly appreciate all of our PEGs! You can be a PEG, too! Pray. Encourage. Give. Remember, The Lamb’s Loom is not just a yarn shop; it’s a ministry and a mindset. •

McAllen Ranks Best in Places to Live in the South on Only a Social Security Check
Survey conducted by GoBankingRates.comO
nce again, McAllen receives an accolade for benefits it provides its residents--this time, those on a budget. According to the folks at GoBankingRates.com, McAllen ranks number one for anyone planning to retire on Social Security alone. The financial website conducted the survey and found that half of the list includes cities in Texas, with other cities from Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas.
“This is such good news for many in our community who are on a fixed government income, including the elderly and others who will rely on Social Security for their retirement,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos. “While we hope to elevate the opportunities for our younger generations, with higher-paying jobs and more educational opportunities, having affordable housing and other amenities for those that live on their Social Security check
alone is important to us, as well.”
McAllen has the lowest average rent--$613 per month--and the lowest living costs. At 81, it has the best livability score of the bunch and the only one over 80. The average monthly benefit for an individual is $1,618.29 ($3,236.58 for a couple).
To find the best places in the South for retirees who rely on Social Security alone, the GOBankingRates.
com methodology included costof-living data from Sperling’s Best Places, average rent prices for
a one-bedroom apartment from ApartmentList, and livability scores from AreaVibes. Livability scores are calculated using factors like crime, schools, and local amenities. These scores were combined, with the lowest score being the best. Livability scores were weighted double in final calculations.

Things I Have Learned
A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy
By Bill Ward MY SNOWMOBILE MAMAST
oday’s Wisdom: Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. ~Helen Keller
I recently had an opportunity to sit down among a group of about 10 ladies. Each was well into what one would consider “grandma” age, some even “great grandma.” The casual image from a passerby would be that of a group of genteel, Christian women pleasantly enjoying coffee and cookies together.
Well, that was all true enough, but their topic surprised me. It turns out most were avid snowmobilers in their earlier days. The discussion was complete with stories of backwoods excursions, falling through the ice, accidents, hitting fences, broken machines, and cold. The image in my head as the stories unfolded didn’t fit the picture of these ladies in my eyes. I knew them as mature ladies; now I had to intermingle images of snowmobile mamas, beasts on a machine, daredevils and backwoods adventurers. Who knows?
There might have even been a
tattoo, or five, among them.
One of the things I have learned in life is that we are not always the image we project. Everyone has multiple elements to his or her life and personality. These ladies were having a great time recalling and sharing the memories. That tells me the person who was that adventurer back so many years ago is still in each of them somewhere, riding along through life as a welcome companion. It is fun to find and bring out those other characters from each of them, and from everyone else we know in life.
Each of these gals had successful lives in her own right, and I suppose the spunk and character that put them on a machine was a part of the personality that led to a good life.
I am now reading a good book about the old days when it was the men’s duty to protect our ladies from all things trying, traumatic, or exciting. It was thought they just didn’t have the constitution for it. Poppycock!
I wish my 92-year-old mother could have joined the group. She and her Arctic Cat would have fit right in. Thank goodness we have ladies with a spirit of adventure among us.
I’m just sayin’.
Fiesta de Palmas Set for October 21-23

UTRGV Department of Theatre 2022 Season
T
he UTRGV Department of Theatre announced its season with offerings sure to please a variety of audiences. The season kicks off in early October with another Halloween favorite, two comedies, and a drama. The department begins the season with their ongoing tradition of presenting a Halloween play, this time October 14, with a production of Mary Shelley’s novella Frankenstein, reenvisioned by local authors Joshua Kennedy and Marco Muñoz. Director Dr. Brian Warren leads a cast in this dynamic retelling of an old Halloween favorite, just in time for the beginning of spooky season.
The second play in the fall is a night of farce, with not one--but two--short one acts by one of the greatest comic playwrights in history, Molière. Under the deft hand of director Dr. Eric Wiley, “The Flying Doctor” and “Two Precious Maidens Ridiculed” will be earthy, energetic, and filled with outrageous good humor that all audiences will enjoy.
In the spring, Brian Cheslik (founding artistic director of Deaf Austin Theatre and guest artist this season) will direct the comedy Picasso at the Lapin Agile by Steve Martin. In this play, we spend the evening at a Paris bar, where we see Picasso and Einstein in an imaginary meeting. This irreverent and playful comedy classic is vintage Steve Martin.
The season concludes with a partnership with the UTRGV Office of Sustainability for a production of Marisela Treviño Orta’s play Somewhere: A Primer for the End of Days. In this poignant, hopeful, and timely play, entomologist Cassandra follows the last monarch butterflies to a mysterious new destination. What will await her at the end of her journey? (Directed by Jenny Saxton-Rodríguez)
