hello

I

had a meeting in San Antonio last week, and I can’t tell you how happy I was to see so many of our “early birds” on the road heading south! We saw plates from across the Midwest--and even a few from Ontario. Every year, it seems the season starts a little earlier than the year before, and you’ll find that none of us locals are complaining!

We are excited about this season, the return of our Winter Texan friends, and the opportunity to meet those of you who are first timers in South Texas. Each week, we look forward to publishing this newspaper, packed with events, entertainment, and more to keep you as busy as you want to be! All the information you will find in the pages that follow have been collected from RV resorts and community organizations from across the Rio Grande Valley, and we encourage you to get out there and explore our wonderful Valley. All the events and activities can also be found on our mobile app, which is handy because the app will give you directions, too!

Whether you are a first timer or a seasoned Winter Texan, we’re glad you’re here and look forward to keeping you informed and entertained this winter!

~We’re just connecting the dots.

F

ood. Lots and lots of food. That was the theme of the summer, every Thursday from April through September, all part of Welcome Home RGV’s Summer Supper Club, a Dutch-treat gathering at a different restaurant--from Brownsville to Mission--each week,

At 3:00 each Thursday afternoon, the restaurant chosen would begin to fill up with Winter Texans before they departed and year-rounders (aka Converted Texans). Well,

We’re just connecting the dots. VOLUME 8 • ISSUE 2 • October 19, 2022 THANK YOU TO OUR 2022-2023 SEASON SPONSORS FROM

actually, more often than not, they would arrive much earlier, followed by a steady stream filling tables and whole regions of the restaurants.

Welcome Home RGV’s Fran Adams of Trophy Gardens in Alamo would greet each person, along with other members of the Welcome Home team. When local entertainer

Curt James was available, he’d join in the meeting and greeting, ultimately leading the group in filling the dining halls with a group holler: “We LOVE Summer Supper Club!”

Mission Restaurant Supply is categorized as a one-stop shop for all your kitchen and restaurant needs. The relatively new showroom, located north of Nolana on 10th Street, has state-of-the-art equipment, from small whisks and aprons to the latest in food-industry equipment and appliances. (Not to mention,

oftentimes, the aroma of freshly baked cookies.)

During the span of what Welcome Home RGV owner Kristi Collier has dubbed the Converted Texan Season, Mrs. Anne Marie Mooney celebrated a birthday at Bubba’s 33 in McAllen, a woman named Judy won a knife set from Mission Restaurant Supply after a seven-week poker run, Claude and Theresa Zimmerman celebrated one day prior to their 67th wedding anniversary,

and a whole table at Cracker Barrel celebrated eating dessert by eating it first, saying, “You only live once!”

Friendships were formed over a good meal as folks were often presented with the opportunity to sit with people they’d just met.

Restaurant owners and staff went above and beyond to serve maxed-out parties, often going the extra mile,

like helping a customer down a ramp to her car at University Drafthouse –Town Lake in McAllen.

Summer Supper Club culminated in a big finish the last Thursday in September with 170 people turning out at the Riverside Club in Mission, filling the restaurant and dance floor-and tummies--with their signature pork tenderloin sandwiches. •

Converted Texan Corral Celebration

I

n April, newly minted Converted Texans celebrated their new home state at Llano Grande Resort’s Hynes Center. The Converted Texan Corral, hosted by Welcome Home RGV, is the acknowledgement and recognition of former seasonal visitors who have decided to stay in the Rio Grande Valley year-round. Lunch, dancing, and ceremoniously pledging allegiance to the Lone Star State were all part of the program. •

Gladys Porter Zoo Unveils Master Plan

E arlier this month, the Brownsville City Commission unanimously passed a resolution acknowledging and supporting a new Master Plan for the Gladys Porter Zoo. Dr. Patrick Burchfield, the Zoo’s executive director, and Jay Dertinger of PJA Architects highlighted the new exhibits and amenities outlined in the plan, which is intended to serve as a 10-year roadmap that will transform the 50-year-old facility into a bright, modern center for conservation, education, and recreation.

“We are extremely excited about moving into our next 50 years with the support of the City of Brownsville for the benefit of the Brownsville community and beyond,” said Burchfield. “When this Master Plan is completed, the new Gladys Porter Zoo will look significantly different. It will give our visitors--mostly families and children--an elevated awareness and appreciation for wildlife and their natural environments. It will also provide more in the way of entertainment and unique animal interactions, with more stops along the way to cool off. Thanks, in large part, to the City of Brownsville, the Zoo will remain a great source of pride within our community.”

“The Gladys Porter Zoo has been an integral part of the City of Brownsville for over 50 years. It has been a place that has entertained and educated for generations. This Master Plan not only represents the future of the Zoo, but it reinforces its place in Brownsville and a commitment from the city to help make it even better,” said Mayor Trey Mendez.

Development of the Zoo’s Master Plan involved a two-year series of interactive planning workshops conducted on site and over webbased platforms. They were attended by the consultant team, headed by PJA Architects, Zoo staff and board members, city representatives, and community members.

Once a plan was formulated, it was presented, modified, and then analyzed by Canopy Strategic Partners to confirm it would be viable as a business plan. As such, the Gladys Porter Zoo’s new Master Plan represents a consensus, designed to improve the visitor experience throughout the park and provide optimum care for its animal inhabitants while inspiring its guests to help conserve the planet’s dwindling resources.

Craig’s Corner

The Master Plan proposes major new exhibits, such as an African savanna, large enough to accommodate a pride of lions, and a reimagined Small World, where children of all abilities create music, enjoy imaginative play, become part of animal habitats, and enhance all of their senses. It also includes a zip line that will take guests over 100 feet above the treetops before an exhilarating 35 mph return to the loading deck. A new boardwalk will lead from the Events Center out to a pavilion within the greater kudu exhibit, allowing a 360-degree view into multiple animal exhibits. New visitor amenities include a themed indoor café.

IMAS Presents Member Art for Juried Show

T

he International Museum of Art & Science will be hosting its 2nd Annual Members’ Juried Art Show this October through the end of December. The exhibition will be juried by Diane Milliken Garza, Ph.D., executive director, Brownsville Community Foundation commissioner, Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA), and will feature original artwork submitted by IMAS members.

“We are thrilled to be welcoming artwork from our IMAS members this year after an incredible response in 2021 for our first show. We had over 72 member artists submit over 100 artworks for the inaugural show and saw an array of talent, styles, and mediums in the exhibition,” said Amelia Whitehead, director of Collections and Exhibitions. “This year promises to be another strong show, with great interest from our membership and the community.”

Works will be juried across the entire exhibition, and awards include Best of Show ($500), second place ($300), third place ($200), and three honorable mentions ($50).

The IMAS Members’ Juried Art Show is made possible by TCA. The mission of TCA is to advance our state economically and culturally by

investing in a creative Texas. TCA supports a diverse and innovative arts community in Texas, throughout the nation, and internationally by providing resources to enhance economic development, arts education, cultural tourism, and artist sustainability initiatives.

SAVORY TREATS SWEET CRAVINGS

RECIPE CONNECTION

Sandy Shares a Popular Recipe from Iowa

L

ooking for that amazing treat that will satisfy your craving! Each week we will offer you a variety of recipes that you can try from those who truly enjoy food and want to share! •

Some Like It Hot

Serves 8

1½ pounds orange roughy

1 cup sliced onions

½ cup sliced pimientos

4 cups chopped fresh tomatoes

1 teaspoon chopped green chilies, seeded

4 teaspoons chopped capers

4 teaspoons chopped cilantro

Cilantro for garnish

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Wash fish with cold water and pat dry. Divide fish into eight three-ounce portions. Arrange in a 13 x 9 baking pan. In a medium covered skillet, cook onions over very low heat, stirring frequently, until soft. Add ¼ cup of chopped pimientos, tomatoes, chilies, capers, and cilantro. Cook until there is about one inch of juice in the skillet. Pour sauce over fish evenly and bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes or until fish flakes easily with a fork. (Time will depend on the type and thickness of fish.)

Serve with sauce spooned over the top. Garnish with remaining pimientos and cilantro. •

There is always a lot happening in Iowa, and almost all of it revolves around food of some sort. Iowans love a good casserole-or “hotdish,” as they call it. The following is from a vintage cookbook printed in 1979 by the Swaledale Methodist Church in Swaledale, IA.

Cheesy Tuna and Noodle Hotdish

8 oz. package of uncooked egg noodles

1 large can good tuna, albacore or solid white, flaked with a fork

1½ cup frozen peas

1 can cream of mushroom soup

1 can (4 oz.) stems and pieces of mushrooms

1 soup can of whole milk

1½ cups crushed potato chips

½ pound Velveeta cheese

Cook the noodles in boiling, salted water until ¾ done. Drain and set aside. Mix the next five ingredients together in a large bowl, combining well. Cut some of the Velveeta into six thin slices, and cube the rest of the loaf. Mix the cheese cubes into the tuna mixture. Add the cooked noodles to the bowl and mix well. Pour into a two-quart casserole dish and lay a single layer of the cheese slices on top. Sprinkle the crushed chips over everything.

Cover with foil and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.

Lifelong foodie, restaurant reviewer, cooking teacher, and summer Iowan Sandy Olson spends the Winter-Texan season at Palm Shadows RV Park in Donna. This season, Sandy will be sharing recipes from across the U.S. and Canada.
