My lemonade is 15 years old!

In October of 2007, I was laid off from my “real” job. In a time that was incredibly uncertain for so many, I vowed then and there to write my own story, to answer only to myself and the Big Man upstairs.

At the time, my daughter was 10 years old, and I thought long and hard about the next steps. I knew I wanted a career that would provide me with the flexibility to attend choir concerts and field trips and to carpool. I wanted to show her hard work can also be fun and how to turn challenges into opportunities, and, most of all, to instill the entrepreneurial spirit in her at a young age.

Welcome Home RGV was born on my dining room table 15 years ago, with a staff of one. Me. Fast forward to today, and we have over 20 women on our team, all who want to express creativity at work yet have the flexibility to be home when they need to be.

I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve the Winter Texan market and for an amazing team that allows me to do what I do best, and that’s connecting people, places, and things. I look forward to the next 15 years and where we will be led.

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade…or in our case – margaritas!

T he International Museum of Art and Science (IMAS), located in McAllen, is home to roughly 7,000 pieces of Mexican and Latin American folk art. The collection includes artful textiles, colorful ceramics, and intricate pottery pieces. Some depict domestic or religious scenes, and others lean more toward the whimsical.

There is definite whimsy in the collection of hojalata (tin art).

A fuchsia and purple cat, for example, with blue wings and a golden

halo; a yellow skeleton sporting an orange western hat and blue and red cowboy boots; a curio cabinet housing a skeleton in a white dress adorned with flowers, gold bangles on her bony—literally--arm, tiny champagne bottles strewn at her feet.

These pieces are from the Ann Moore collection of over 2,000 pieces of folk art and are nestled in a large, bright pink cubby as part of the Museum’s Mexican and Latin American Folk Art exhibit. (Additional pieces of Moore’s collection can be viewed at McAllen’s Quinta Mazatlan World Birding Center.)

The ornamental and symbolic tin pieces are the inspiration for an adult workshop planned for Sunday, October 30, at the IMAS, where participants will get to create their own hojalata skeletons. It’s part of a program crafted by the Education Department.

“We want the visitors to have a deeper connection to the folk-art exhibit,” says IMAS Education Coordinator, Roni Cortez. The workshop will offer a tour of the permanent folk-art exhibit, explaining the significance of the

After the tour, the beginner-level craft will commence in the Museum’s atrium, where participants will cut, emboss, connect, and paint their tin skeletons. Future adult workshops are planned to further connect patrons to the materials found in the collection, including basketry and working with clay.

The IMAS is acknowledging this celebration of life into the month of November.

On display through Saturday, November 5, is Inspiring Latinas Community Altars Exhibit, a showcase of altars designed and decorated by the McAllen Public Library, Mission Historical Museum, South Texas Reproductive Justice (STRJ), UTRGV Center for Mexican American Studies, IDEA College Preparatory San Juan National Art Honor Society, and the IMAS Educational Department.

The altars are traditionally adorned with items of significance to the deceased, including photos and the person’s favorite foods. Since real food was not an option, community participants got creative. There are crocheted and 3D printed pan dulce

Going Batty

Spend an evening with Mission Bats

W hile driving home one evening, Mindy Schroeder Brown saw what she thought was a gulp of swallows darting around U.S. Highway 83 in Mission. It didn’t take long for her to realize what she stumbled upon was one of the largest bat colonies in South Texas…and Mission Bats was born.

What started as a simple Facebook page educating locals on the importance of these creatures quickly grew into so much more. Brown, a self-proclaimed bat novice, found herself working with chiropterologists from local universities to identify and understand this colony to find ways to preserve it, ensuring their safety.

Today, Brown has gained much respect and admiration from several specialists in the fi eld, while also gaining an impressive fan club in her efforts to educate the community through her personalized tours.

On a good night, when the sky

is clear, hundreds of thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats can be seen flying out of the freeway’s ribboned edges and swirling into the air, creating mammoth tubes of black set against the evening sky. It is truly a sight to behold.

The melodic pitch of the huge colony as they start waking up and emptying out into the Texas sky can be as intense as the smell. It will definitely wake you up.

During the tour, Brown gives a background on the life and migration patterns of the colony. She explains how these wondrous mammals are key to a healthy Rio Grande Valley ecosystem, helping farmers, ranchers, and residents with the enormous number of insects, especially mosquitos, they consume. Larger colonies, such as this, consume several tons of insects each night. Brown also explains how this particular stretch of highway offered the perfect conditions for this colony to thrive into possibly the largest colony in South Texas,

making them very lucky bats, indeed

This species prefers caves, but with the ever-expanding and changing environment, they have been pushed into making their homes under bridges, attics, and abandoned buildings, making their survival a bit sketchy at times.

Brown’s passion is especially evident when dispelling the myths and legends surrounding bats. One of the main messages throughout the evening is how bats in America have received a “bad rap” from TV and movies and are among the most misunderstood mammals, as a result.

As cooler, shorter nights approach, Brown said, this bevy of bats is getting ready to migrate to Mexico and South America. She also said that while the bulk are set to head south, there is a smaller permanent colony that stays year-round. These are typically the older or injured that cannot make the journey for thousands of miles to their next home.

If you miss them this fall, no worries. They will be back, pregnant and ready to give birth to a whole new generation in early spring. Brown and her faithful followers will be there to greet them with new tours, so book yours today. •

Just Catching Up with The Lamb’s Loom

We had all kinds of birthday party fun in August! Yes, at the end of August, The Lamb’s Loom turned eight years old. Every year, we throw ourselves a yarn-fun-filled party. Lots of new yarn presents to open, door prizes, and yummy birthday cake happened all week. Our local indie dyer, Kristy, whipped up a batch of “birthday yarn” just for the occasion, too. Wish y’all could have been here!

It was great to spend time with friends and share stories and memories from the last few years. This year was also full of making memories and growing all that we do around here. Part of that growing is that we have outgrown our Sit-n-Knit Room, so we spent part of our “summer vacation” switching things up a bit. We’ve moved and expanded the Sit-nKnit area, and we just love it and think y’all will, too.

Sit-n-Knit is at the heart of all we do. It’s a peace-filled place to enjoy each other’s company, share project ideas, and make new friends. You know we all enjoy the creativity and fun when show-n-tell comes in the door, too! Another thing we have added to Sit-n-Knit is prayer time on Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m., and all are invited. Our regular closing hour is at 4, so this gives us a little quiet space to join together and pray over those we serve and seek God in all we do. (Psalm 90:17) You’re also welcome to bring in a project you are making for someone, and we will join you in prayer for them. We have a saying around here that The Lamb’s Loom is “more than a yarn shop; we’re a ministry and a mindset.” That mindset is putting service into action, and we use yarn to do just that.

You know there’s always a comfy chair waiting for you, so come by any time and chillax with us. And remember: there are so many ways to “stitch it forward.” We would love y’all to join in. So, let’s stay in touch all year!

You can join us on our website at thelambsloom.com and follow us on Facebook and Instagram. And, of course, we have lots of fun articles right here in Welcome Home Winter Texan.

The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. We truly appreciate all of our PEGs! You can be a PEG, too! Pray. Encourage. Give. Remember, The Lamb’s Loom is not just a yarn shop; it’s a ministry and a mindset.

Tejano Walk of Fame

A walk among the stars

Next time you find yourself in need of a Tejano fix, cumbia your way over to Edinburg and stop by the Tejano Walk of Fame, where the city has been honoring the popular South Texas genre since 1999.

Here, you’ll discover many of the artists who made the Tejano music genre wildly popular being honored with a star, much like the ones found in Hollywood.

While visiting, be on the lookout for popular artists, including Freddy Fender, Selena, and the beloved Tejano son of Edinburg, Roberto “El Primo” Pulido. Truly a Tejano pioneer, Pulido is honored at the Walk with a stunning sculpture as a centerpiece among his many fellow Tejano icons.

The local legend began playing guitar at the age of 12. Then, at the ripe old age of 15, he joined his first band, Los Hermanos Layton, a conjunto band out of Elsa. After earning several music scholarships, Pulido went on to get his bachelor’s degree and to teach music…but not for long. The stage was calling his name, and he quickly went back to performing, this time with his own band, Los Clasicos.

A polished saxophonist, many credit Pulido with creating the unmistakable sound of Tejano music we all know and love today by adding brass instruments, as well as the accordion, to his music.

The rest is history. In 1981, he became the first artist to ever receive the Tejano Music Award for Male Vocalist of the Year, as well as Male Entertainer of the Year.

The stage never stopped calling his name. Los Clasicos recently celebrated their 49th anniversary together, giving Pulido a career that now spans some 57 years. They still love to perform and can even be found, on occasion, here in the Rio Grande Valley.

The Walk of Fame is tucked into the heart of downtown at 415 W. McIntyre St. in Edinburg, where you can rent a segway to explore more of the historic town or bring a picnic lunch and grab a table in the tree-canopied courtyard next to the attraction.

HalloWings Monarch Migration Celebration

S outh Padre Island is home to many types of wildlife you can see yearround, but during the fall is when you can get a glimpse of one of our most beautiful visitors. The kaleidoscopes of migrating monarch butterflies pass through South Padre Island as they make their way to Central Mexico for the winter. The biggest gathering occurs at the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary, where the gardens will be in full bloom, ready for the monarch butterflies’ arrival.

This year, the Sanctuary will be hosting the SPI Monarch Migration Festival Saturday, October 29, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for families to come and spend a day learning about the wonders of the monarch migration pattern through butterflygardening presentations and tours. The event is free to the public and features live music, games, a costume contest, and more!

The Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide educational opportunities for visitors to learn more about the natural environment and wildlife found on South Padre Island. Visitors can freely tour the premises between the observation tower, reptile house,

and boardwalk. For more information on the HalloWings Monarch Migration Celebration or this fall event, visit sopadre.com/event-calendar.

Over 350 Winter Texans Ring In the Holidays for The Salvation Army

It’s that season again when Salvation Army bells echo throughout the Rio Grande Valley and beyond. In the Valley, 35 locations are manned by volunteer ringers from 16 different Hidalgo County RV parks.

There are still spots open for groups that would like to assist. Teams can sign up to ring the bells one day a week, from the Friday after Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve.

deep roots

Each park takes one or more days at a location, and from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., men and women--two at a time for two hours each--manage the Salvation Army bells at these 35 locations. This means a group of 10 manages one location for the 10-hour shift, working in those 2/2 groups (two people for two hours).

The Salvation Army has many events at this time of the year, and these bell-ringing hands make it possible for Army staff to do more for those in need in Hidalgo County.

RV parks now ringing include Adobe Wells, Bentsen Grove, Bentsen Palm, Citrus Valley, El Valle Del Sol, Enchanted Valley, Golf View Estates, McAllen Mobile, Mission Bell, Texas Trails, Tip O’ Texas, Trailer Inn, Valley View Estates, Wintergreen Estates, Winter Haven, and W&I Resort. McAllen Rotary and McAllen Rotary North service clubs are both ringing this year, too.

If your organization would like more information or you’re ready to sign up, please contact Chris Swinney at 956-682-1468.

Editor’s note: This is the first in a series Welcome Home Winter Texan will be running this season, highlighting several different points of historical interest. The series will include historic sites, buildings and markers in “Off the Beaten Path” and restaurants dating back as early as 1922 in “History Bites.”

Off the Beaten Path

You don’t have to look hard to find history in the Rio Grande Valley. A simple walk in most directions and you’ll spot a historical building, street, school, or marker.

One such place is the world-famous Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle, where folks come from all over to pray, worship, and walk. Yes, walk.

The Basilica has meticulous grounds filled with native trees, bushes, and flowers framing a landscape that hosts the 14 Stations of the Cross and a sobering prayer station at Christ’s tomb, where countless believers come to pray each year.

Tucked just off the beaten path of this holy site, directly parallel to U.S. Highway 83 is not one, but two, special historical markers.

Visitors in the know typically spot the railroad post first. In the early 1900s, this railway nicknamed “Old Flossie” was a crucial part of the Rio Grande Valley’s development. It transported everything needed for growth and development.

Next to the lone railroad sign is another marker reminding folks that U.S. Highway 83 is, in fact, the Texas Vietnam Veterans highway.

The marker proudly reads, “In gratitude to the thousands of men and women who served our country during the Vietnam War, the people of Texas dedicate this highway which runs across our state from the southernmost tip to the northernmost point.” It is the longest stretch of highway within any state in the U.S., running just over 906 miles, beating out Interstate 10, which boasts 880 miles. •

Things I Have Learned

A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy

Today’s Wisdom: Just once, I want a username and password prompt to read, ‘Close enough.’ ~Quote from just about everyone.

If you happen to be someone who uses a computer for just about anything on the web, I pretty much know your frustration. Computers were meant for young people who still have memory and the ability to learn new tasks. Those skills have been dwindling for some years now for many of us.

There was a time when I had one password for everything. It was great. I barely had to slow down getting into a website. Then someone figured out how to hack, and all of a sudden, my passwords needed more caps, or symbols, or numbers. What worked on one site wasn’t good enough on another.

Pretty soon, I found myself with so many different passwords that I had three full sheets of paper covered with password notes. I ran out of space and put more on the back. There was no way to remember them all, so every log in became an exercise in finding my sheets, searching for a password, and

hoping I hadn’t had to change it again and neglected to update my sheet.

Complicating my most recent summer, when we headed home to Minnesota from our winter home in Texas, I forgot my password sheets. Sure, why not?

When I do need to update a password, I often get one of those questions to prove I am me, like, “What was your maternal grandmother’s maiden name?” Ummmmm! Hmmmm!

I now have passwords managed by other software that, of course, I need a password to access. That has mostly solved my problem, but it hasn’t fixed the situation when my 92-year-old mother calls and says she can’t get logged into Facebook. “It won’t take my password.” Try fixing that from 1,500 miles away.

One thing I have learned is we can’t let the little things in life frustrate us. It is tempting to holler at the screen when we see, “Password does not match our records.” I’ve actually done that. Then I remember every one of us lived most of our life not even knowing what a password was. We survived. We are tough. We can handle this. Just don’t expect me to remember any of this next week.

N

othing beats a South Texas sunset, whether it’s over brushland, a palm treelined horizon, or the Laguna Madre--the bay that separates South Texas from South Padre Island. The fall offers some of the most beautiful opportunities to witness richly colored skies. This particular moment captures the sun setting beyond the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway and a wind turbine farm. •

VTX1 Companies Brings Gladys Porter Zoo into the Future

T he Gladys Porter Zoo announced a new partnership with VTX1 Companies (VTX1), a local high-speed internet and telephone-service provider based out of Raymondville. The news was shared at their annual Zoofari fundraiser earlier this month; the theme was Roaring into the Future.

With the help of VTX1, the Gladys Porter Zoo’s digital infrastructure will be completely upgraded, with multiple access points and a new fiber optic network. The upgrades will ensure that there is high-speed internet access throughout the Zoo, creating more opportunities to educate the public and reach new audiences. This new infrastructure will not only bring the Zoo to new global audiences but will catapult the Zoo into the future.

This partnership began when VTX1 heard of the network limitations the Gladys Porter Zoo faced, which were made quite apparent at the beginning of the pandemic. For the first time in the 50-year history of the Zoo, it was completely isolated from its South Texas community. Unable to bring visitors into the park, it had to shift quickly to online engagement and educational content. The need to depend on connectivity exposed a severe issue for the Zoo--its connection to the outside world was less than ideal, and its internal infrastructure was severely outdated. VTX1 reached out to the Zoo to determine how they could help.

“When you work with VTX1, you are more than just a customer,” said Chief Technology Officer Sebastian Ivanisky. “We have entered a symbiotic relationship in which the ultimate beneficiary is the community at large. We love to see our Valley institutions grow and are committed to be supporting partners of the Gladys Porter Zoo.”

Work has already begun to determine the best locations for internet access points, and VTX1 will soon complete the

rest of the internal network. Once the internet infrastructure is replaced, it will impact all aspects of Zoo operations. Remote concession stands and animal feeding areas will be able to accept digital payment forms. Zookeepers will be able to network with over 200 zoos to share data and trade ideas to improve animal welfare. Staff members will be able to deliver highly interactive presentations to school districts throughout the country, as well as conduct livestreams from anywhere on Zoo grounds.

“The Zoo is incredibly grateful to VTX1 and its construction of a brand new route of fiber-optic cable that will provide the fastest internet service available today. This will amplify the work the Zoo does and further the Zoo’s mission to preserve nature through education. This upgrade also aligns with the Zoo’s commitment to increasing accessibility for our visitors,” said Zoo director Dr. Patrick Burchfield.

VTX1 is the largest rural internet service provider in South Texas, with a network that extends from the Rio Grande Valley to North of Austin, covering approximately 47,600 square miles. For more information about VTX1 Companies, visit vtx1.net or call 844438-8891.
