T he season has officially started, and we are incredibly excited to welcome you all home! November is a hectic month for us at Welcome Home RGV as we entertain your activity and tour directors, showcasing all the Rio Grande Valley has to offer. Each November, we host an event specifically for your resort managers and activity directors, then host field trips to different venues so they can see them first-hand and bring details about their adventures back to you.

This season, we’re taking things to a new level and offering group tours, funfilled day tours throughout the Valley, like Rocket Ranch, a Los Fresnos wine tour, a trip to Alpaquita Ranch, and a whole lot more! We will also offer overnight excursions to places like Galveston, Corpus Christi, and San Antonio for those who want to get away for a few days.

All of this is being done in an effort to make your winter experience the best it can be! We are so glad you’re here, and we can’t wait to see you this winter!

helloAn HonorableAn Honorable Farewell Salute toFarewell Salute to the USS Kitty Hawkthe USS Kitty Hawk

I n the midst of the Vietnam War, two young men started a lifelong friendship serving aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. Some 55 years later, the old friends proudly stood together, sending her off with a final salute as she entered the Port of Brownsville to be scrapped.

“I can’t put it into words,” said Arnold “Arnie” Mincey of Lubbock, Texas. “I’ve been on several ships in my life, but with her, it was an emotional investment. With her I served my country.”

Arnie and Eugene “Gene” Keelean from Cadillac, Michigan, both served as USN yeoman in the ship’s Operations Office. It was their shared time at war aboard the ship that ignited their friendship, which spans over five decades. So they both agreed; they wouldn’t miss being together for her final voyage--for anything.

They did so aboard the charter Getaway out of South Padre Island, all thanks to Breakaway Cruises and Welcome Home RGV. These two companies partnered to make this once-in-a-lifetime moment possible

for some 100 lucky patriots from all over the country.

It was on this adventure that the two friends made a new special connection with a retired USN senior chief, who proudly served on the gray lady some 30 years after their tour. Joleene “Jo” Bolzle may not have been aboard during Vietnam, but she still made history. She was among the first crew of females to serve aboard combat vessels in the U.S. Navy. And it was Lady Kitty Hawk she first called home.

We’re just connecting the dots. VOLUME 8 • ISSUE 4 • November 2, 2022 THANK YOU TO OUR 2022-2023 SEASON SPONSORS FROM KRISTI • • •

It was Jo who gave the final champagne toast as the mighty vessel passed through the jetties just a few yards away. With everyone’s glasses raised, Jo, with love and pain in her throat, shared these touching words: Attention to Starboard. For all of us who are here that served on the Kitty Hawk, she was our home. And that

makes us family. She made us, just as much as we made her. Prepare to pay our last respects to her great career, a great life, and a final goodbye to our Grand Grey Lady. To the Kitty Hawk!

The response can be best described as bittersweet. Some roared as she passed, while others stood somber

and speechless with a tear or two rolling down some cheeks. The ship and what she represents is priceless to so many.

“It’s like seeing your childhood home right as the wrecking ball swings toward it,” said Jo. “It’s sad.”

The Navy sold the Kitty Hawk for one cent after rejecting a bid from the USS Kitty Hawk Veterans Association to convert her into a museum in Long Beach. The association raised some $7 million, but that was only half the funds the Navy required, so they sold her instead…for a penny.

Today she sits in the Port of Brownsville, where she is being cleaned and scraped; she will then be scrapped.

While her days are no more, the moments, memories, history, and friendships she forged will go on forever as a testimony to her importance and service to our country. •

Kicking Off Welcome Home RGV’s 15th Year

Welcome Home RGV kicked off its 15th season in business at Texas Trails RV Resort in Pharr October 20. Approximately 200 local RV park and resort activity directors and managers turned out to gather information and learn how Welcome Home can aid in a smooth Winter Texan season.

In celebration of its 15th year, Welcome Home RGV rolls out an orange carpet for photo opportunities at each of its events. Galvan Insurance of Donna served as the orange-carpet sponsor.

Principal agent at Galvan Insurance Ernie Galvan could have passed for a Welcome Home RGV employee in his bright orange polo, if not for his company logo on it.

Galvan has been in the insurance business since 1981 when he made a major career change, leaving the railroad industry to be closer to home and family. He discovered the customer base defines his business.

“As a good agent, as an independent, we try to sell everything,” Galvan said. But what his customers mostly request is auto, home, and commercial-trucking coverage. This includes RVs and mobile homes. “We probably serve more mobile homes than regular homes.”

Welcome Home RGV has followed that same modus operandi, serving the requests of its customer base-focusing on the requests and needs of the Winter Texan community. The results of this were on display at the 15th Season Kick-Off Luncheon.

The event started with a miniexpo, showcasing Welcome Home’s divisions and services, including Travel and Tours by Welcome Home-manned by a very enthusiastic

Tables draped in orange tablecloths were positioned in a rectangle in the center of the Friendship Hall at Texas Trails. Staff--in orange, of course-greeted attendees and distributed information as they circled the setup before being seated at festively decorated banquet tables.

Welcome Home RGV owner Kristi Collier addressed the crowd before a lunch break. After sharing her gratitude for her staff and recognizing her longest-serving (13 years) employee Amie Gray, who manages production of this publication, Collier acknowledged her 15th year in operation.

She continued with further revelations about the results of Welcome Home RGV’s Winter Texan Economic Impact Survey, citing the economic impact of Winter Texans and their visiting friends and family at over $1 billion.

That giant figure does not factor in the community service provided by winter visitors, Collier shared. While the survey has been completed, she continues to gather information, asking the group to keep tabs on

monetary and in-kind donations throughout the season and to report back to her “so we can tell our community leaders--preach it from the rooftops--how important the Winter Texans are to our community,” she told them.

The event continued after lunch with an activity-director orientation. Turnover for these positions is not uncommon, Welcome Home RGV offers tips, hacks, support, and insights for long-time directors and newbies alike to run a smooth season for all winter visitors.

Back to that orange polo worn by orange carpet sponsor Ernie Galvan. Galvan eagerly shares how he researched what color would be best for his business. What he found out, he shared with a grin: “Orange is a winning color.” •

9th Annual A Season of Hope Arts Festival: Celebrating Education and the Arts

W e welcome the community to join in our festivities as we celebrate the 9th Annual A Season of Hope Arts Festival. This McAllen holiday tradition celebrates visual and performing arts education and artists in the Rio Grande Valley. In addition, it encourages young people in our community to explore and appreciate the arts.

This year, the festival will be a two-day event. The festivities begin Black Friday, November 25, with the Lighting of the Tree at 5:30 p.m. Music will be provided throughout the evening by students from the Creative Arts Studio. Creative Arts Studio is a collective of local artists empowering our community through fine arts education. The evening continues with Art at the Village from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Local artists will have their work on display and will be on hand to show and sell their original work.

The festival continues Saturday, November 26, from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Support your local artists by shopping the assortment of professional artists’ booths. They will exhibit their masterpieces of jewelry, paintings, photographs, sculptures, and other media. All the works of art that are for sale at A Season of Hope Arts Festival are original, handcrafted pieces. Most are one of a kind.

In addition, 97.7 The City radio station will provide holiday music throughout the day. The City’s focus is to encourage kids to become involved in the media arts through radio classes and on-air experience.

Exhibiting artists had to go through a lengthy selection process before being chosen to participate in this annual event. Proceeds from the professional artists’ application fee and the selected artists’ booth fees provide scholarships for Valley students. Students studying drawing, painting, photography, dance, music, and voice are eligible for these scholarships.

For further information about A Season of Hope Arts Festival, contact Yoli Cantu at 956-6878682.

History Bites

The Vermillion Restaurant and Watering Hole

115 Paredes Line Rd., Brownsville 11 a.m.-11 p.m. daily

The Vermillion Restaurant and Watering Hole Celebrating 88 years

t was 1934, John Dillinger was public enemy number one, Donald Duck was introduced to the world, and the Great Depression was at its worst. This is also the year the now-famous Vermillion opened its doors--and they have been open and expanding ever since.

Named after its founders, The Vermillion began feeding hungry locals after the couple built a small, flip-front hamburger stand on the corner of Boca Chica Boulevard and Paredes Line Road in Brownsville.

The eatery quickly earned the loyalty of locals for its good food and cold beer. The couple enjoyed much success for some 20 years until, in the late ‘40s, the owner had to sell due to health issues. Thankfully, the Davidson family was there to take the business to the next level.

G.L. “Gib” Davidson bought the restaurant and kept everything that made it special, from the authentic flavors to the icy-cold beer. Locals continued to flock there, and the business grew.

In 1971, Gib took a back seat and handed the now-iconic hot spot over to his son, Daniel, who continued its success and earned a reputation in the community as an all-around good guy.

One person who can attest to this is the eatery’s current owner, George Perez. Perez was a dishwasher, working for Davidson in the ‘80s, until he was fired--not because he wasn’t a great worker but because Davidson heard the young man’s grades were slipping. So Davidson, being the good guy he was, told Perez to “get those grades up and come back.” Perez returned a few months later and has never worked anywhere else.

Knowing the restaurant like the palm of his hand and dedicating his life to turning the Vermillion into the famous historical Rio Grande Valley icon it is today paid off for Perez. Before Davidson’s death, he turned ownership over to Perez, who proudly runs it today with his wife, Rachel, and mother, Esther, who has been working there since 1968.

Their tagline continues to be “Not fancy- Just good” for a reason. Their quality is as solid as their history. The old, classic, wood bar stands ready to serve something cold to the thirsty guest, surrounded by comfortable seating and friendly folks.

Open daily from 11 a.m.-11 p.m., this local treasure is still well known for its authentic flavors in dishes like enchiladas and chalupas, as well as for its burgers, seafood, and appetizers, like wings and ceviche. •

ow! Our second year of the MakeAlong is flitting right along. This year’s theme is the BFFs, Butterfly Flitty Friends, and it has produced some super fun, colorful, and creative contributions to the Donation Chest.

W

As people flock to the RGV to enjoy our “winters,” the butterflies are migrating with them. So it just seemed like a perfect match for our theme. We have planted lots of native butterfly-attracting plants, so on a cool morning sitting on Peggy’s Porch, you may have one of these beauties flit over and join you for a little sit-n-knit time. It has been fun every month to see the creativity of projects that come in to our Donation Chest, and the year isn’t over yet, so join in!

Monthly on our website--from March through December--you can find the new butterfly we introduce to y’all. Join us and make your favorite project, like a hat, scarf, blanket, or shawl for our Donation Chest. You are welcome to purchase your yarn here (which supports our mission, too!), or dive into your own stash and find something fun that works with the theme. We’re adding every contributor’s name to the hat and drawing for some fun prizes during January’s Yarn Tasting.

Thank you to everyone joining this project. The giving of your time and talents helps us send warm gifts of encouragement all over the world.

There are so many ways to “stitch it forward,” and we would love for you

to join us. So, let’s stay in touch all year. You can join us on our website at thelambsloom.com and follow us on Facebook and Instagram. And, of course, we have lots of fun articles right here in Welcome Home Winter Texan.

The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue.

We truly appreciate all of our PEGs! You can be a PEG, too! Pray. Encourage. Give. Remember, The Lamb’s Loom is not just a yarn shop; it’s a ministry and a mindset.

Food, music, and local merchants galore

I t’s a special time of year in the Rio Grande Valley. The days are a bit cooler, and the breeze is softer, making it the perfect time to explore our many street festivals. These fun getaways are perfect for those wanting to explore the

unique local flavors and sounds that make the RGV so special. These events are also a great way for local artisans, merchants, food trucks, and musicians to shine.

Expect music--and lots of it. At least one local band will likely be performing, and most festivals and markets host several bands, offering

everything from Tejano, country, rock, oldies, and everything in between. So bring your dancing shoes and wear your comfy pants because the food is just as impressive as the entertainment.

It’s no surprise that South Texas is home to the best Mexican food on the planet. If there’s a taco truck at the festival, you can’t go wrong. But these events offer so much more.

Be on the lookout for the legendary spiropapa, a deep-fried spiral potato on a stick. Even Elon Musk couldn’t pass up trying this local favorite. He was photographed enjoying one for the first time at last year’s Charro Days parade and festival in Brownsville.

Other local favorites include homemade keto snacks, artisan tortillas and breads, a medley of Mexican candies, and, of course, elote . If you haven’t tried elote , you’re missing out. It’s corn, either in a cup or (if you’re lucky) on a stick, slathered in mayonnaise, rolled in a heavenly Mexican cheese blend, and dusted in chili.

Local merchants will be selling everything imaginable, from native plants, homemade pet treats, and vintage clothing, as well as authentic Mexican attire and custom-made jewelry (to name just a few of the items).

This time of year, there are several events to choose from, and they all offer something unique and special.

The festivals are easy to find on Facebook under “local events” (search word “festivals” or “street market”). Local newspapers, chambers, and downtowns also promote them. •

IMAS Opens Aliento a Tequila Exhibit November 10

The Aliento a Tequila (or The Spirit of Tequila ) exhibition explores and celebrates the landscape, culture, and traditions that gave birth to tequila, Mexico’s national drink. In this series, photographer Joel Salcido includes the original distilleries that literally founded the industry, as well as several artisanal tequileras committed to the ancestral ways of making tequila from harvest to bottle. Aliento a Tequila is supported by L&F Distributors and opens Thursday, November 10, at the International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) in McAllen.

Agave dates back to the Aztec civilization as an important crop in

Mexico. Since the 1600s, the people of western Mexico have cultivated blue agave from the red volcanic soil that blankets the region to make what we know as tequila. Salcido traveled across Mexico’s state of Jalisco, capturing images of distilleries and artisanal tequileras; blue agave fields at sunset; the agave’s pineapplelike centers, called piñas; elegantly shadowed barrel rooms, called añejos ; and the agave farmers themselves. Salcido’s photographs, together with the bilingual Spanish/ English texts, reveal not only the tequila-making process but also the region’s traditions of culture and religion. Aliento a Tequila celebrates a craft that is rooted deep in the culture of Mexico and connects viewers with the labor and place that produces this popular spirit. The exhibition was curated by Roy L. Flukinger, independent curator emeritus and past senior curator of photography of the Harry Ransom Center, The University of Texas at Austin. Aliento a Tequila is organized

by ExhibitsUSA, a program of MidAmerica Arts Alliance.

IMAS members and guests are invited to a preview reception Tuesday, November 8, from 5:007:00 p.m. at the IMAS. The event will kick off the exhibit with a first look at Salcido’s photography, and guests can enjoy light appetizers and drinks. The preview reception is sponsored by L&F Distributors and is free for IMAS members and $10 for non-member guests. Those wishing

to attend this special evening event are encouraged to RSVP and register in advance via the IMAS website.

A tequila tasting and painting workshop for adults 21 and older will be held Thursday, November 17, after hours at the museum. Participants will be guided through an agave plant painting by IMAS artist Roni Cortez and will sample tequila. Registration will open at sales.theimasonline.org November 1 for this special experience.

Veterans Day Program at Eleventh Hour of Eleventh Day of Eleventh Month in Harlingen

he Veterans Memorial Project Committee will present a Veterans Day Program on Veterans Day, November 11, at the Veterans Memorial at Pendleton Park in Harlingen (1425 Morgan Blvd.). The program is free and open to the public.

Veterans Day has its own history. In a nutshell, it is observed to honor military veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. Veterans Day is intended to pay tribute and to give thanks to living veterans for their sacrifice. The United States Coast Guard will be featured in this year’s program.

Many facts have been gathered to highlight the USCG’s role as maritime security and search-and-rescue force, as well as being the law-enforcement branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. This information was compiled from a collection of articles available to the public, as well as from interviews about life in the Coast Guard

from recruits, those in the Coast Guard Academy, and established “Coasties.”

The program begins at 11 a.m., as that is the time when the “Great War,” World War I, ended--at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

Sgt. Sal Carmona will welcome guests and provide opening remarks.

The Harlingen Police Department Color Guard and the Harlingen Fire Department Color Guard will be next on the program as they join forces to present colors. Frank Hall will deliver the invocation, and Heidi Dill will sing The National Anthem.

Harlingen Mayor Norma Sepulveda will then deliver another welcome to veterans and to all guests. There will be additional speakers, and a patriotic song honoring veterans from all of our Armed Forces will be performed.

Harlingen Concert Association Annual Season Kicks Off Swingin’ and Singin’

The 2022-2023 Harlingen Concert Association annual concert series opens the season Swingin’ and Singin’ with a return visit from the renowned Side Street Strutters. This popular jazz group’s performance will be November 17 at the CFC Auditorium, 901 N. Loop 499 in Harlingen.

In celebration of their 40 th anniversary, the Strutters and vocalist Meloney Collins proudly introduce their new project, Swingin’ and Singin’. To achieve this, the band got together and selected their most popular melodies, their most powerful musical arrangements, and the songs that continuously excited an audience; the best of the best! They have added some new musical offerings to create an unforgettable musical-theatre experience that captures the essential charm and vibrant energy of jazz.

Grammar-winning country music artist Rick Trevino and his band

will perform Country & Christmas December 6, 2022.

January10, 2023, will start a new calendar year with Divas 3 . This Las-Vegas-based act features three female vocalists celebrating four decades of iconic pop divas.

Chester Gregory will perform February 2, 2023. Gregory and his band will perform a high-caliber tribute to Jackie Wilson and the artists he influenced. Gregory is an award-winning actor and singer. He made his Broadway debut in Hairspray, later performing in many more productions.

The season finale will feature Vinyl Radio in concert March 9, 2023. The group has a righteous regard for the great rock ‘n’ roll music classics. The four-piece rock band delivers the harmonies and melodies of classic ’70s radio.

T he Mexican bluewing butterfly ranges can be found from South and Central America to Mexico but also in the Rio Grande Valley. This particular one was spotted at the National Butterfly Center in Mission. Dozens of species of butterflies take advantage of the center’s native plants and trees for food and shelter.

Sandy Shares A Popular Recipe from Massachusetts

The East Coast is the birthplace of America and is overflowing with history and traditional food. This casserole is simple, filling, and a good addition to a meal that has a spicy meat entrée, such as an herbed pork roast.

Grits Casserole

A good side dish for a spicy meal

Serves 6-8

2 pounds lean ground meat

1 large onion, chopped

1 pound grated mild cheddar cheese, divided

1 (15 oz.) can ranch-style beans, undrained

1 tablespoon chili powder

1 teaspoon garlic powder

Salt and pepper, to taste

12 corn tortillas

1 (10½ oz.) can condensed cream of chicken soup

1 (10 oz.) can diced tomatoes and green chilies

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Lightly grease a 13x9 casserole dish. Sauté onion and meat until meat is browned. Drain. Add undrained beans, chili powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well. Cut 6 tortillas in strips and line bottom of dish with them. Cover with meat mixture; then sprinkle half of cheese on top. Cut other 6 tortillas in strips and place on top; then top with remaining cheese. Mix condensed soup with tomatoes and green chilies and pour over top. Bake uncovered for 1 hour.

1½ cups regular grits, not instant 2 teaspoons salt ½ pound sharp cheddar cheese, shredded ½ pound mild cheddar cheese, shredded 6 cups boiling water

1½ sticks real butter, not margarine, melted 4 large eggs, beaten Dash of garlic powder--not garlic salt

Cook the grits in the boiling water as directed on the package. Stir in the melted butter and the cheese, stirring until the cheese melts. Fold in the beaten eggs, combining well. Pour into a buttered 9x13-inch baking dish. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees, and bake the casserole for 1¼ hours. Test as you would for custard, with a knife inserted into the center coming out clean, though the center might be a bit “jiggly.” Serve warm.

Lifelong foodie, restaurant reviewer, cooking teacher, and summer Iowan Sandy Olson spends the Winter-Texan season at Palm Shadows RV Park in Donna.
