Memorials and Monuments: Honoring Veterans Year-Round

I had the opportunity to spend

last week in beautiful Montreal, Canada, doing what I love most-promoting travel to Texas to prospective retirees at the Salon International Tourismeet Voyage Travel Show. What a wonderful experience! The city was historically beautiful yet sleek and modern. Over the last few years, we’ve made marketing South Texas to snowbirds a priority. You see, they are snowbirds until they come to Texas for the first time; then they realize they aren’t snowbirds at all. They are part of an incredible community you all know as Winter Texans. I’ve spent time traveling throughout the Midwest but felt it was high time to take our message north of the border, and when I got the invitation to go with the state tourism agency, I jumped at the opportunity. Seeing the places so many of you come from is important on so many levels. It helps us connect the dots and serve you even better. I look forward to seeing you soon! ~We’re just connecting the dots. •

The focal point of Veterans Park in Brownsville. Story and photos by Eryn Reddell Wingert

The “Father of Veterans Day” is a World War II veteran named Raymond Weeks, according to nationaltoday. com. The site explains that Weeks campaigned for Armistice Day to acknowledge all veterans, in addition to the fallen, establishing the first Veterans Day event in Alabama in 1945 and garnering the support of General Dwight Eisenhower. It wasn’t until 1954, more than eight years after the first celebration,

that November 11--Armistice Day-was amended by the United States Congress to be Veterans Day. However, honoring veterans can be practiced year-round in South Texas by visiting the impressive memorials and monuments permanently in place to acknowledge those who have served this country. The City of Brownsville’s Veterans Park is located next to the public library at the corner of Central Boulevard and Wild Rose Lane. The focal point is a concave of short

walls engraved with the names of local veterans, spanning World War II through Afghanistan. Flanking the monument are two statues, one honoring female veterans of the Rio Grande Valley and the other of Sergeant Jose Mendoza Lopez, who grew up in Brownsville. Beneath his likeness are the words, “Whose valor and distinguished record honors all who serve our country.” MEMORIALS AND MONUMENTS CONTINUED ON PAGE 3 >>

In Harlingen, if you’ve flown into the city’s airport, you can’t miss the incredible monument depicting an iconic moment captured by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal in 1945. Six Marines, weary but pridefully determined, raise the United States flag atop Mount Suribachi at Iwo Jima, Japan. The sculpture is an original, fullsized working model by Dr. Felix de Weldon, who sculpted the monument that stands in Washington, D.C. Weldon donated the piece to the Marine Military Academy, according to the Academy’s website. One of the soldiers depicted is Corporal Harlon Block, USMC, of Weslaco, Texas. Block is interred steps from the Iwo Jima Monument in Harlingen. A Daughter’s Love By Alden “Ace” Moore

As a working mother in the 1990s,

Pam Jablonski couldn’t wait to escape Wisconsin’s icy cold winter and visit her parents in Brownsville. Bob and Lynn Bloedorn had retired and were spending their winters in Palm Resaca Park. Bob loved the culture of the area, the beauty of the park, the friendliness of its residents, and the opportunity to get involved in a variety of interesting and fun activities. As a retired Iwo Jima WWII vet, he loved getting involved with the Confederate Air Force and the now-defunct Texas Air Museum. Lynn loved helping in the park kitchen and getting involved in other park activities. She also found doctors she “couldn’t live without.” One in particular, Dr. Gumbel, specialized in internal medicine. Pam remembers those special times when she visited her parents. “Mom would buy gulf shrimp, invite all her friends over, and throw a big party for me. I looked forward to coming down every year with my daughter, Nicki, and doing all the exciting things there are to do in the RGV and Mexico,” Pam said. “The teachers would give Nicki assignments to do while she

was away and tell her to keep a diary. After Lynn passed in 2009, Pam continued her annual visits with her dad, which included their regular visit to Progreso, where everyone knew Bob. They had a regular parking spot for him and would always wash his vehicle. Pam and her dad would

get a father/daughter pedicure and finish it off with a margarita. “My parents were model residents,” said Pam. They greeted newcomers to the park, making them feel welcome, and introduced them to other park residents. Lynn would often lead a group to Julia’s

Restaurant in Los Fresnos to share a meal. Bob had a sharp wit and a dry sense of humor. Because of that, he could be a bit of a rascal, at times. When Lynn felt he had said enough, A DAUGHTER’S LOVE CONTINUED ON PAGE 6 >>

Things I Have Learned A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy By Bill Ward

Don’t Keep Paying the Price

Today’s Wisdom: “So, did you forgive him?”

I have been pretty lucky in life. I have little or no recognition of ever being the subject of abusive behavior. The worst I can come up with is one time in high school when, after fighting through nerves and fear, I actually dialed the number of a girl. When she came on the line, I stammered through my prepared speech, asking her out to a school dance. Her response to my invitation was that she was so sorry, but she had to stay home and wash her hair that night. As an awkward, unsophisticated, non-jock teenager, that was a crushing blow. She could at least have done me the honor of telling me her grandma was dying or something. The dirt in her hair was more important than me! I did manage to recover my pride and did just fine in the dating game. I assume she did, too. I am not angry about it. In fact it is a good story, one shared by many teenage boys who were not quite ready for prime time. I know, though, that a lot of folks do have bad

stories—some, really bad. One in every five women has experienced sexual abuse and one in three has experienced violence. Surprisingly, the number is one in four men. (Psychiatric Times, Cook & Ellis) Others might be impacted by just an insult rather than an actual attack. People can hold anger for just about anything. Odds are good we all know some of these people but don’t know their story. Odds are, someone in your own household is in this group--perhaps you. Fewer than 40% ever seek help. That is a lot of people walking around with unresolved hurts, fears, and guilt. The biggie, though, is unresolved anger. The crazy thing is, our response to anger is a choice. It is curious that we tend to enjoy hanging onto it. In my work life with seniors, it was not uncommon to find families still torn apart in anger by old hurts and wounds. One of the things I have learned in life is that forgiving can be the one thing you have to do to be OK. Hanging on to anger, either at another or at yourself, means you keep paying the price for someone else’s actions or for your own. My daughter-therapist says it’s like eating poison and hoping the other guy gets sick. That isn’t healthy.

she would step in and say, “Now Bob, Honey, stop that.” Bob became very active at the Iwo Jima Memorial Museum in Harlingen. He volunteered there every Saturday for 20 years. “I was always amazed at the reaction of the visitors when my dad shared some of his stories about being on Iwo Jima,” said Pam. Here is one of those stories: One day when the marines were under severe pressure, Bob looked around and saw that everyone else was dead. It was his mother’s birthday, and he asked God, “Please don’t let me die on my mother’s birthday.” Seven thousand marines died on Iwo Jima, and over 20,000 were severely injured. Bob loved woodworking, so he built many of the replicas on display in the Museum (cabinets, planes, Higgins boats, machine guns, and rifles, to name a few). He also built a replica of the Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, where the Marine Corps was born. Ron’s dad was also an Iwo Jima vet, and it was his job to climb the sides of mountains to bring

up communication cables. (Ron is Pam’s husband.) Bob continued living in the park until 2019 when it finally became time for him to go home. “As I was driving my dad out of the park, I realized that many of the residents had lined up on the side of the road and saluted my dad as we drove by. It was such an emotional moment and one that I will never forget,” Pam recalls. When Bob died two years later, they had a memorial in Palm Resaca Park to honor his memory. Pam and Ron now live in the unit. “It’s so special to live in my parents’ house,” said Pam. “I have so many wonderful memories here.” Like her mother, Pam has also found a great doctor in the area who specializes in chiropractic/neurology and helps her with her headaches and restless leg syndrome. Ron says he is happy just to be out of the snow for the winter. “It’s nonstop fun,” he says. “One night it’s bingo, then poker. There are just so many things to do!” “I take after my parents,” says Pam. “I just love being in our park with all the special people who are here, and I love volunteering to help, whenever I can. We plan to be here a very long time.” •

Speer Memorial Library to Host Discussion of The Honey Bus By William Renner, reference librarian

Join us at Speer Memorial Library in

Mission Tuesday, November 15, for a discussion of The Honey Bus, taking place in the Library’s Community Room at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and discuss the book. In 1975 in Rhode Island, five-yearold Meredith’s parents divorce, and her mother takes Meredith and her three-year-old brother to live with their grandparents in Carmel Valley, in the Big Sur country of coastal California. With her mother mired deep in depression and despair, Meredith bonds with her grandfather, a kindly beekeeper who introduces her to the world of honeybees. Known as “The Beekeeper of Big Sur,” he not only shows her how honey is produced but also explains how bees live together as a big family, how they

work together in a hierarchy of job functions, and why they do the things they do.

What is it about the bees’ social structure and behavior that so fascinates the fertile imagination and wonder of a young child? Is it merely an escape from the reality of her family situation, or can bees actually teach us something about our own lives, if only we are willing to observe and learn? Written by Meredith May and first published in 2019, The Honey Bus is an autobiographical journey of selfdiscovery, a story of reaching out beyond toxic family circumstances to forge a bond with nature, inspired and guided by the ancient wisdom of bees. We will have some copies of the book available for check out to those who sign up for the book discussion, or you can stop by our Reference Desk or call 580-8754, and we will try to obtain a copy for you via interlibrary loan. SUNDAYS AT 10AM

Sa m

If you are seeking to join a loving, caring and fun congregation then All Saints is the church for you. Take the time to visit us for Sunday service followed by coffee, treats and fellowship in the parish hall immediately following our service. We are a small, friendly congregation that is growing and accepting. We are active in our faith, have deep roots in the community and celebrate all the gifts that God has bestowed upon us. You look forward to meeting you.

“It is such an incredible feeling to help with this project, being able to see our community’s involvement and supporting art in the Rio Grande Valley. The works of our participating artists hold such unique perspectives and efforts that deserve to be admired,” said Celina Michel, exhibitions coordinator. “We look forward to future Members’ Juried Show exhibits, as these events will not only provide our community with a safe space to express their ideas to their neighbors but also a chance to have an open dialogue and get to learn about each other.” Awards were given to the following member artists for their work in the show: Best in Show – Berry Fritz “Tufted Titmouse,” 2nd Place – Josue Rawmirez “Fringe World on Fire,” 3rd Place – Irma Garza Garcia “Inferno,” and three Honorable Mention awards – Noreen Graf “Frida,” Maribel Barrera “Self Portrait,” and Erick B. Salazar “Bananas.” “It was an honor to be asked to

jury the IMAS’ second member’s art show. Over one hundred works of art--by ninety member artists-were submitted. Beautiful, varied, thoughtful, meaningful, inspired are some of the adjectives I would use to describe the collection of works,” said Diane Milliken Garza, this year’s juror. “When you support local art, be it by a gallery purchase or your attendance at an exhibit, such as this one at IMAS, you support local art culture. Our community is reflected in our local art. The exchange between artist and audience sends out unique positive impacts. It helps us understand and empathize with one another and cultivates our local identity as a community. It is a powerful thing.” To visit the exhibit or to purchase or renew a membership, call 956-6812800 during business hours or visit the IMAS website to register online. Artwork can be viewed during open hours, Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or on Sundays from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Members’ Juried Art Show is made possible by Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA). The mission of the TCA is to advance our state economically and culturally by investing in a creative Texas. TCA supports a diverse and innovative arts community in Texas, throughout the nation, and internationally by providing resources to enhance economic development, arts education, cultural tourism, and artist sustainability initiatives. Regular admission is $5 and $3 for children ages 4-12, students with

Show-n-Tell Time I t’s

Show-n-Tell time every day at The Lamb’s Loom. We just love seeing and sharing what we’re working on with each other and y’all are welcome to join in. Shown-Tell is fun and always helps spark another project idea to add to your list. There are first-time projects, gifts for family and friends, and projects for the Donation Chest. Everyone has enjoyed playing with our new “birthday” yarn and have come up with some wonderful projects. Ann’s adorable Tunisian jacket is a perfect example. Another kind of yarn we have comes right in the front door from friends who want to help out with this ministry but may not know how to knit, crochet, or loom. We often get donations of yarn because someone is moving and just will not have the room or they found grandma’s stash under the bed. Our wonderful volunteers separate and sort the yarn before combing through project ideas. That’s when Show-n-Tell gets

really fun, as the idea gets tried out and then added to our Donation Chest. You are always welcome to come join in our day and soak up some of the joy of Show-n-Tell with us. You know there’s always a comfy chair waiting for you, so come by any time and “chillax: with us. And remember, there are so many ways to “stitch it forward,” so we would love y’all to join in. L e t ’s s t a y i n t o u c h a l l y e a r. You can join us on our website at thelambsloom.com and follow us on Facebook and Instagram. And, of course, we have lots of fun articles right here in Welcome Home Winter Texan. The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. We truly appreciate all of our PEGs! You can be a PEG, too! Pray. Encourage. Give. Remember, The Lamb’s Loom is not just a yarn shop; it’s a ministry and a mindset. •

How to Destroy Unforgiveness By Paula Key

You

may be like me and have a long-time friend in your life who, all of a sudden, goes off the deep end and begins living life in a totally different way than he or she ever had before. Your friend may choose other people over you, disrespect you and the friendship you have had for years, or seem to not even care about you and your feelings. Your faithfulness to your friend all these years doesn’t seem to count for anything. You then begin to battle hurt, anger, and frustration and know you’re on the road to unforgiveness and bitterness. How do you gain the right attitude toward your friend, especially when he or she keep hurting you? I knew God had a solution! He always does, right? He began to give me steps to take to bring about this solution. First, He showed me I needed to say I forgive my friend— by faith--and as I obeyed and took the steps in His solution, He would make the “forgiveness by faith” a reality in my heart. OK; sounds great. What’s next? Second, I needed to gather specific Bible verses I knew were God’s will for my friend, especially those verses that pertained to the problems he or she was going through. Third, I was to personalize this, putting my friend’s name in the appropriate places in each verse. Lastly, I was to pray these personalized verses out loud regularly. You can’t easily feel badly about a person you’re praying for regularly. So I did what God said to do, and guess what? I got so much more than I ever dreamed possible. This is what happened for me and will happen for you if you carry out God’s solution. How do I know it will happen for you, too? Because it’s all based on God’s Word, which never fails.

The results of this solution: You’ll be praying God’s will for your friend. You’ll have God’s perspective on your friend. Your attitude will totally change toward your friend. You’ll be set free from all the negative thoughts and feelings. You’ll have God working on your side and be full of peace. And, hopefully, your friend will get

back on the right track with God and with you. How does all of this work? Jesus said in John 6:63b, “...the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life.” God’s Word builds up our spirits and blesses our lives and our mindset. Peace, joy, and faith are the rewards of bringing God and His Word into our challenges. So, as always, God’s got a solution for each and every one of our

problems. He wants us to live by faith in His Word and in peace and joy. We just need to cooperate with Him. Paula Key is the wife of Chaplain Dennis Key at Winter Ranch RV Resort in Alamo. Sandy Shares a Popular Recipe from New Mexico By Sandy Olson

On a visit to a very interesting museum in Alamogordo,

New Mexico, I picked up a copy of a cookbook of recipes from the Families of the Alamogordo Genealogical Society. New Mexican cooking is very similar to that in South Texas, so this traditional soup recipe may sound familiar. Pecos Posole Soup

1 pound lean beef 1 pound lean pork 1 medium onion, chopped 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 tomato, minced 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 t a b l e s p o o n f r e s h p a r s l e y, minced 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon fresh cilantro, chopped 1 cup water ½ teaspoon ground cumin 4 cups chicken broth 2 tablespoons pure red chile powder 1 #10 can white hominy

(Sandy’s Note: Pure powdered chiles are available in supermarkets in both hot and mild flavors. Don’t use regular chili powder; it will have the wrong taste in this dish.) Cut the meat into bite-sized pieces and sauté with onion, garlic, and seasonings in a large pot, using a small amount of vegetable oil. Add tomato, broth, and water; cover and simmer for 1 hour. Add hominy with the liquid from the can. Cook 15 minutes more and test to see that the meat is tender. Serves 6-8. This is a soup and should not be dry.
