The first few weeks of November are always so exciting. Seeing new and familiar faces is always such a treat for all of us at Welcome Home RGV. We kicked off the season with a luncheon for all of our activity directors and resort managers, held an Activity Director Orientation for those who are new to their positions, held our SouthPadre-Island-area Boot Camp Weekend (where we showcase area attractions and network with each other), and hosted our annual Connection Fair, which provides your managers and activity directors with the opportunity to network with area service providers, retailers, and restaurant management. And the month isn’t even halfway over yet!
It’s just a small part of what we do at Welcome Home RGV to protect the integrity of the Winter Texan lifestyle. Things are changing rapidly here, there, and everywhere, so keeping your park’s team up to date on things happening in the RGV is a priority for us. We hope you will reap the benefits of our hard work and go explore beautiful South Texas!

All Roads Lead Roads Lead to Texas Tour to Texas Tour
The All Roads Lead to Texas Tour began--as many adventures do--at the McAllen International Airport. Destination: the Midwest! The contingent: Kristi Collier, owner of Welcome Home RGV; Curt James the Entertainer; fellow Welcome Home RGV team member Stella Riester; and myself, tagging along to document the adventure.
It was smiles--and coffee--all around as we sat near the departure
gate the day after Labor Day. The coffee…well…what coffee lover passes up the airport’s Coffee Zone? The smiles: because the group was embarking on a trip to spread the word about how special South Texas is during the winter months.
First stop, Omaha, Nebraska, arriving at sunset and subsequently filling up on Reuben sandwiches and giant pretzels dipped in queso at Crescent Moon Ale House. All fuel for what was to come, traveling across five states for five events
over 10 days. (Of note: the Reuben Sandwich was invented in Omaha. Well done, Omaha!)
Day two was a travel day that began with a groundhog sighting from our hotel window. (We assume, based on the front desk clerk’s lack of enthusiasm when asked what the critter was, that the sighting was comparable to seeing an armadillo in Texas.)
We’re just connecting the dots. VOLUME 8 • ISSUE 6 • November 16, 2022 THANK YOU TO OUR 2022-2023 SEASON SPONSORS

Story and photos by Eryn Reddell Wingert
Stella Riester, Kristi Collier, and Curt James stand in two states at once on Bob the Bridge over the Missouri River.
A touristy stop at the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge (a.k.a. Bob the Bridge) was in order. The 3,000-foot-long bridge spans the Missouri River between Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Omaha, Nebraska. Afterwards, we hit a few downtown shops and then the road for the first official Tour stop at the South Dakota Military Heritage Alliance, Inc. in Sioux Falls.
The Alliance is a 501(c)(3), serving veterans and active U.S. military. In the simplest terms, the Alliance offers support services, entertainment, and camaraderie. Big picture: there’s nothing like it in the country. It’s a national model for military, veterans, and civilian relations.
After a tour of the vast facility-including balcony views of a concert stage and a state-of-the-art game room, complete with a pair of virtual reality goggles--we prepared for
the first event by laying out door prizes, brochures, and promotional material and adding pops of orange in the form of pens, mints, and flower centerpieces to banquet tables draped in navy tablecloths.
The rundown for the afternoon event was the same at all five stops: meeting and greeting, followed by Curt James singing cover hits like “Y-M-C-A” and “Elvira” as patrons took to the dance floor, and an intermission of Collier addressing the audience touting the perks and positives of South Texas, followed by more mingling and dancing.
New and familiar faces joined us in Big Lake and Monticello, Minnesota; Rice Lake, Wisconsin; and Davenport, Iowa.
There were sites to see between stops, including the illuminated Arc of Dreams in Sioux Falls, the new 100-foot Prince mural in downtown Minneapolis, a restaurant named

A Harvest for Habitat
A
t The Lamb’s Loom, we have an annual, super-fun project we just have to share with y’all! And since all of our Winter Texan friends are not down here yet to see all these fun submissions in person, we are sharing here.
If you have heard or participated in the annual fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity Rio Grande Valley, Mighty Homes of Hope, you know how much fun this is. We heard of this community-involvement event and participated for the first time two years ago and everyone had a blast.
Mighty Homes of Hope works like this: when you sign up, they provide every eligible participant and sponsor with a little house (like a small bird house). Then you get your creative juices going and POOF, you have a house! Well, maybe it does take a glue gun or two.
It has been a real joy working on our houses these last three years. Everyone at The Lamb’s Loom gets involved, from coming up with a theme to putting the last bit of yarn on. Once our home construction begins, you never know what you will see around here. Last year, our theme was Hatitude for Habitat. Our Sit-n-Knit area had girls knitting grass, crocheting a
river, making one-inch loomed hats, and gluing sheep. There were even a couple of cute little gnomes running around, and the home was perched on a tree stump. It was adorable!
Next, all of the participants turn in their homes. Those homes are put on exhibit for the month leading up to Giving Tuesday. Then they are auctioned off to the public. So all of the organizations that participate are contributing, and the public gets to join in and help out, too. It’s a win-win for everyone in our local community.
We completed our “Mighty Home” for this year, and we have turned it in. This year’s theme for our home is “A Harvest for Habitat.” Our prayer is that there is a huge harvest for them in community involvement as they work to provide homes to needy and deserving families in the Rio Grande Valley. The Mighty Home auction runs from November 14 through the 30th this year and will be on display at North Park Lexus Rio Grande Valley from October 24 through November 30.
Habitat for Humanity Rio Grande Valley does such wonderful work here in the RGV. We have been blessed to see this effort grow and are excited to
see it continue. So mark your calendar for next year and y’all get to gluing, too.
And as soon as you get back down home here, you’re always welcome to come by and join in our Sit-n-Knit. Chillax and enjoy a few new friends. And when you aren’t here at home in South Texas, you can join us on our website at thelambsloom.com. Also, follow us on Facebook and Instagram. And, of course, we have lots of fun articles right here in Welcome Home Winter Texan.
The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Perspectives
God’s Greatest Gifts
By Stacy McDonald
I cannot fully articulate the beauty, vastness, and awe-inspiring goodness of the wonderful gifts God bestows upon His children. Oh, but I must try to at least give you a glimpse, a small taste of these rich and delightful delicacies!
Certainly, His greatest gift to His children is the life, death, burial, and resurrection of His Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus, our brother, friend, justifier, redeemer, judge, and Lord. He is everything good rolled into one. It is because of His finished work on the cross that we have a way to God, the ONLY way in fact, for He is the cornerstone, the propitiation, and the author and finisher of our faith.
The gift of salvation given us by the grace of the Father through Jesus leads us to the second-best blessing of God to His children--the indwelling of His Holy Spirit, His Spirit always with us now to comfort, guide, direct, and teach us in the narrow way to freedom and everlasting life through Christ Jesus.
We never have to walk alone again. We never have to feel in the dark—outside, castaway, betrayed,
or abandoned ever again. Jesus promises us that He will never leave us nor forsake us. We need only to call on Him, and His Spirit is there to answer us in that beautiful, still, small voice.
As beautifully amazing and comforting as this gift is, God goes a step farther, giving us even more-a voice when we are voiceless, wordless, dismayed, or overwhelmed, a voice to intercede on our behalf to
the Father, through the Son, by the Holy Spirit. When we cannot find the words, He will speak for us. When we intercede from a heart set on God’s will, He will hear and direct our prayer in accord to that perfect holy will from above. What a relief to our hearts, minds, and souls to know that Our Father in Heaven has made a way for our prayers to be effective and heard. Another burden lifted from us as we are set free by Jesus Christ.
Who would not cherish such a beautiful gift as this, a gift that not only helps us but, even more importantly, can be utilized to help others. How many times a day do we encounter people in need of prayer? Our spirit senses this need and our discernment points to it, and yet, we do not know exactly how we should approach God regarding them.
We often feel unqualified and ineffective in our intercessions, but we do not have to feel that way anymore. The important thing is that we have brought them into the throne room of God through prayer. The Holy Spirit will take care of the rest.
Likewise, the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Romans 8:26 KJV

Find Your Artistic Side on South Padre Island
T he art scene on South Padre Island has grown over the years, and there are many options for art lovers planning to visit. Some of the most significant additions have been the murals around the Island. Wyland’s Whaling Wall and the new Sea Life mural are the most notable. The Wyland’s Whaling Wall is named “Orcas off the Gulf of Mexico” and is located at the South Padre Island Convention Center. This mural is designed to raise awareness of the environmental dangers orcas face.
The Sea Life mural at the Marriott is the newest and was painted by Marcos Zamudio, who previously painted smaller murals at the Marriott. His underwater mural takes in key aspects of local sea life, such as sea turtles, redfish, and the “Christ of the Fisherman” statue.
For a more active art experience, we also have the sea turtle and sandcastle art trails. These art trails
take you through South Padre Island, visiting sculptures located at various businesses and restaurants.
One of the significant proponents of art on South Padre Island is the Art Business Incubator (ABI). The primary focus of ABI is the growth of
art culture on the island. ABI does this through a residency program designed to help flourishing artists looking to open an art-related business navigate the early stages of business development. ABI also hosts various art classes throughout
the year for people interested in learning more about the art world. Upcoming courses will be holiday themed, so participants will have the perfect handmade gift.
To learn more about murals, art trails, and ABI, visit sopadre.com.

Chicken Rice Casserole
2-4 cups cooked rice
½ cup + 3 tablespoons real butter, softened ¼ cup flour
2 cups whole milk
2 teaspoons chicken bouillon granules
½ teaspoon onion powder ¼ teaspoon black pepper Seasoned salt to taste
2 cups sour cream, not low-fat/ no fat
12 oz. American white cheese 4-5 cups diced cooked chicken 1 sleeve buttery crackers, crushed
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Cut the cheese into thin strips and then pieces. Grease a casserole dish and press the rice into the bottom and up the sides to make a “crust.” In a heavy saucepan, combine ½ cup of the butter, the flour, and the milk. Whisk well and cook over medium heat until smooth. Add the bouillon granules, onion powder, pepper, and seasoned salt. Whisk in the sour cream and cheese. Stir until the cheese has melted and the mixture is smooth. Add the diced chicken. Spread this inside the rice crust. Dot with the remaining 3 tablespoons of butter. Bake for 30-40 minutes.
