hello
W hen I was growing up, our family vacations were centered around Model A trips and conferences. We traveled across the country in my dad’s 1929 station wagon; our first trip was to Reno, Nevada. Sounds like a great trip, right? Well, we left McAllen in August and drove through the desert in an unairconditioned vehicle! I was only 10 years old at the time, so it was an adventure for sure, but my mother didn’t quite feel the same way!
My dad’s love of the Model A took me all over the state… and the country. My most memorable trip was to Green Bay, Wisconsin, and we got to see the Packers practice! I have a passion for all things Wisconsin, and I’m sure that trip is responsible for planting this love. We were always invited to participate in parades, and the City of McAllen’s 4th of July Parade was always something we did with the local Model A group.
There’s nothing quite like taking a ride along a country road in a Model A, with the wind whipping through your hair, smiles and waves from passersby, and the gentle sound of the engine running. And then there’s the melody of the horn…Aoogah…a sound I never get tired of hearing.

A Promise Kept A Promise Kept
T wo years ago, Welcome Home
RGV owner Kristi Collier sold the remnants of a 1931 Ford Model A Woody Wagon to Tim Peterson of Wisconsin. The items had belonged to her father, Tim Johnstone, a wellknown car collector who passed in 2019.
In no hurry to sell, she took her time to find a buyer who would cherish the project and put the time in to restore and enjoy it. “God
works in mysterious ways,” she says, regarding the initial call from Peterson.
Peterson’s home sits on a lake near Siren, Wisconsin. She knew Siren. Three years prior, Collier fell in love with the town while touring the Midwest to promote South Texas to winter visitors.
Peterson told Collier he wanted the Wagon so he could take his grandkids down to the dairy for ice cream. She knew that dairy. The Burnett Dairy, where she had been
aghast with all the cheese options; she shipped a box back home to McAllen years before.
Collier could immediately picture the entire scene he laid out. “I knew he was the person who should have it.”
Peterson travelled to McAllen, Texas, loaded up the bits and pieces, boxes, notes, and individually tagged baggies filled with tiny parts into a

trailer and hauled them all back to his workshop on Mudhen Lake.
But before he left, a promise was made: Peterson would restore the Model A in two years’ time and take Collier on a drive to Burnett Dairy.
“There’s nothing better than a ride in a Model A,” says Collier, referring to the sound of the engine, sunshine streaming in, and the distinct “Aoogah!” horn.
Peterson kept to his promise, working diligently over the past two years, recruiting help from friends, in-laws, grandchildren, and Tim Johnstone, whose notes and tags were instrumental. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without what Tim organized and had done.”
Two years passed quickly, as the car’s true form took shape, and last September, Collier was reunited with her father’s Ford Model A.
“It looks quite different than the last time you saw it,” Peterson
said. Collier stared in awe, her eyes glistening, as she quietly--but with heartfelt emphasis--said, “It’s amazing.”
“I feel like I know your dad really well,” Peterson shared, as the two stood by the car. “Because I read all of his notes… I feel like I know him and the value he put on this project.”
The reunion was an incredible day spent with gracious hosts who welcomed Collier, Curt and Stella Riester, and me. Lunch--and a cruise around the lake--came after sharing stories around the Model A about what it had been and how it was meticulously, painstakingly, and lovingly put together. Later, we were joined by the Peterson’s daughter, Alicia, and her husband, Jeff, who has been chronicling the project in a vlog.
For the drive to the dairy, Collier claimed a seat in the very back

Tim Peterson shares the trials and challenges of the restoration process with Kristi Collier.
Kristi Collier shares memories of excursions with her father, Tim Johnstone.
on the driver’s side--her spot from childhood--specifically, the day after her dad finished refurbishing a 1929 Woody, when he loaded up his wife, Mel, and their 10-year-old daughter for a trek to Reno, Nevada… in August!
The sight and sounds of the Model A brought back a road trip’s worth of memories for Collier. “Model A’s have been such a huge part of my life. My dad would be really happy to see this.”
Peterson mused about the man he never met. “I hope he’s proud of my work.” About that, Collier said, “I have no doubt.” •

Grateful for Year-Round Giving
M any of us have heard of Giving Tuesday. It’s the last Tuesday of November, just after Thanksgiving. For those involved with The Lamb’s Loom, you know giving is in our DNA; it is an all-year-long kinda thing. We do love the focus of gratefulness and giving in November, though. It is nice to take time to refocus on things and do an inventory of our time, talents, and gifts we give during the year.
As a nonprofit prayer-shawl ministry, we have teachers who give of their time to teach classes, girls who help out in our shop, and so many who give of your time to fill our Donation Chest year-round. From the Donation Chest, thousands
of handmade items go out to help mission groups that serve around the world. They are given to those who need a hug wrapped up in the stitches of a shawl or the warmth of a hat on a child’s head. There are baby blankets given to families that need a helping hand and love in a lap blanket laid over a grieving heart. That’s what we’re all about--sending love out in every stitch.
We are so very grateful to those who have chosen to come alongside this ministry all year, every “Tuesday,” to give financially in support of this ministry. If you would like to join in or want more information, please come by and visit with us. We always
love the opportunity to share a few stories of encouragement and joy in what God blesses us to do here at The Lamb’s Loom. You can also visit our website to see a few Donation Destination pictures and get more information on giving.
You are always welcome to come by and join in our sit-n-knit, chillax, and enjoy a few new friends. And when you aren’t here at home in South Texas, you can join us on our website at thelambsloom.com for updates throughout the year. Also, follow us
on Facebook and Instagram. And, of course, we have lots of fun articles right here in Welcome Home Winter Texan. The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue.
We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
We truly appreciate all of our PEGs! You can be a PEG, too! Pray. Encourage. Give. Remember, The Lamb’s Loom is not just a yarn shop; it’s a ministry and a mindset. •

Enchanted Valley Ranch Ladies Tea
t was a sunny November afternoon when 100 ladies gathered at Enchanted Valley Ranch in Mission for a Ladies Luncheon and Tea. Many of the ladies were adorned in a variety of chapeaux, created especially for the occasion.
The ladies were escorted to their table by gentlemen dressed for the occasion. A delightful luncheon of tea sandwiches, fruit and cheese, and a tempting dessert--in the shape of a shoe--were served.
Following the luncheon, a style show was held starring many of the gentlemen in attendance, as well as a few of the ladies. The exquisite stylings included a cancan dress made with an overskirt of cans laced together; a little black dress,
specially labeled for any occasion; a beautiful “Lyle Pulitzer” tropical gown with matching shawl and combat boots; a fruit-of-the-month ensemble; a gorgeous doublebreasted blazer; a lovely blue “ball
gown” with matching accessories; and a newsprint dress with matching pillbox hat.
The committee did an exceptional job putting together this fun event. Prizes were awarded to the top
three hat designs, as decided by the judges.
It was an enjoyable afternoon of fabulous friends, delicious food, and an entertaining array of stunning new “fashions.” •

Smithsonian’s Life in One Cubic Foot
Opens December 3 at the IMAS
T he International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) announces the temporary exhibition Life in One Cubic Foot. The exhibition follows the research of Smithsonian scientists and photographer David Liittschwager as they discover what a cubic foot of land or water--a biocube-reveals about the diversity of life on the planet. Life in One Cubic Foot will be on view December 3, 2022, through February 6, 2023. The exhibition is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), in collaboration with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History.
A biocube, the tool at the heart of the exhibition, is a 1-by-1-by-1foot framed cube organisms from the surrounding environment can enter and pass through. Biocubes featured in the exhibition were placed in environments across the globe to learn what forms of life, both known and unknown, could be found in the cube during a 24-hour period. In addition to exploring life through the exhibition, visitors are also invited to participate in citizen science and to uncover the biodiversity in their back yards by creating and monitoring their own biocube.
Life in One Cubic Foot explores life from exotic environments, like the coral reefs of French Polynesia and the alien mid-water ocean off the coast of California, to the more familiar locales, like New York City’s Central Park. Hundreds of organisms, ranging in size from the head of a pin to the full size of the biocube, are featured in the exhibition through collages of photographs, models, interactive elements, and exhibition videos.
Biocubes in the exhibition were not only used by scientists to explore what is already known about life on Earth but also to spotlight how much biodiversity remains for aspiring scientists to discover. Scientists estimate that there are more than one million species still unknown or unnamed by
scientists. Environmental changes, like climate change and other manmade forces, are taking their toll on life around the world, both discovered and unidentified. Global efforts to understand the impact of these changes and answer questions about how to manage the complex dynamics of wildlife and natural resources will be improved as gaps in the tree of life are filled.
After seeing how scientists use the concept of one cubic foot to understand the diversity of life in the field, visitors can learn how biocubes can be used to uncover life in more familiar places. They are invited to build their own biocube and contribute to citizen science by studying and sharing discoveries from their neighborhood habitats. Visitors can explore the National Museum of Natural History’s website to watch a video about biocubes and learn how to build, deploy, and study their own biocube. They may also share their findings with the greater scientific community.
SITES has been sharing the wealth of Smithsonian collections and research programs with millions of people outside Washington, D.C., for more than 65 years. SITES connects Americans to their shared cultural heritage through a wide range of exhibitions about art, science, and history shown wherever people live, work, and play. For exhibition description and tour schedules, visit sites.si.edu.

Sandy Shares a Popular Recipe from New York
By Sandy Olson
The Reuben sandwich is a New York City favorite, and its popularity has spread across the nation. Most people like a baked potato, so why not combine all those delicious flavors in one dish? They take a bit of easy “fussing around,” but the results are so good!
Reuben Baked Potatoes
4 large russet baking potatoes
1 large clove garlic, minced
2 cups finely diced cooked corned beef*
1 tablespoon prepared horseradish
1 can (14 oz.) sauerkraut, drained*
1 teaspoon whole caraway seeds
½ cup shredded Swiss cheese
1 package (3 oz.) cream cheese*
3 tablespoons sliced green onions
3 tablespoons grated parmesan Sweet paprika for garnish Scrub the potatoes well, but don’t peel them. Bake at 425 degrees for about 45 minutes or until tender. Remove from the oven, but leave the oven on.
Let the potatoes cool enough to handle. Then slice them in half lengthwise. Scoop out the insides carefully, leaving the shell intact, with about ½-inch of potato inside. In
a bowl, combine the corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, onions, garlic, horseradish, and caraway seeds. Mash the removed potato with the cream cheese. Stir in the corned beef mixture, combining gently but well. Mound this mixture into the potato shells. Sprinkle with the parmesan and some paprika for color. Return them to the oven for 25 minutes or until heated through and the cheese is a bit brown.
Makes 8 servings.
* You can use deli corned beef for this recipe, but ask them to slice it fairly thick so you can dice it into nice cubes. For the cream cheese, use Philly® brand; it gives the best flavor and blends easily with other ingredients. If the drained sauerkraut is too tart for your taste, rinse it briefly under cold running water before using it.

Christian Resort Ministries Has New CEO
C hristian Resort Ministries (CRM) would like to announce their new CEO, Chaplain Douglas Hollums. He is replacing Chaplain Robert “Bob” Ruesch. Chaplain Bob established CRM and led it for 20 years. The ministry has seen many changes over the years; nevertheless, Chaplain Bob has been able to keep the focus on ministering to the spiritual needs of many of our RV communities in the RGV.
So who is Chaplain Doug Hollums? He was raised in the South but spent his aftercollege life in the Northwest. He received his bachelor’s degree at Columbia Bible College in Columbia, South Carolina. After college, he served as a rural missionary with Village Missions in Washington and Oregon. He received his Master of Divinity at Multnomah Graduate School in Portland, Oregon. Chaplain Doug met and married his wife, Arlene, while in the Northwest.
Over the years, Chaplain Doug has served as a senior pastor, as well as in a lay capacity. He established two insurance agencies and served on a variety of nonprofit boards. He is a board-certified chaplain with two national associations, as well as being an instructor for the Institute of Clinical Pastoral Training. Chaplain Doug has served as a hospital and hospice chaplain, and for seven of the last eight years, he managed the Chaplaincy Program for two hospitals on the Oregon coast. Last year, he served as a CRM park chaplain in Harlingen.
As the new CEO, Chaplain Doug wants to continue the ministry vision: To provide caring, creative, Christ-centered ministries in an everchanging world.
Everyone can agree that we are in a changing culture, and the need is great for qualified
chaplains to be available. CRM is here to provide that resource for our many RV resort communities. If you would like a chaplain in your park, please contact CRM at 210-549-9006 or email Chaplain Doug at crmdhollums@gmail.com. You can also check out the ministry at crmintl.org. •
