Spotted in the RGV Sabal Palms Sanctuary, Brownsville

According to Plants of Deep South Texas: A Field Guide to the Woody and

Flowering Species by Alfred Richardson and Ken King, the coral bean is a nectar source for hummingbirds. The vibrant pink, tubular blooms appear in spring. The book also informs, “The red seeds produced by the coral bean were used as necklace beads by Native Americans; and, while the plant makes for a pretty ornamental addition to a South Texas landscape, all parts of the plants are poisonous. •”

Summer Fun at The Lamb’s Loom Special to Welcome Hone Winter Texan

W e sure hope everyone has had

a “wondermous” summer. We sure did! As y’all know, we spent most of the summer in 100+ temps down here in South Texas! That meant a whole lot of “inside time.” The Sit-n-Knit room was a great place

to spend time with friends, cool off, and enjoy a little chillaxin’ time together. Now that all of our Winter Texan friends are making your way back to your Texas homes, we are all hoping things cool off for all of us and we can get outside to Peggy’s Porch! T h i s s u m m e r, we were especially grateful for our enlarged Sit-n-Knit space because we had a full house for our 9th birthday in August! We had a “divine” time, celebrating nine years of memories with everyone. Can y ’ a l l b e l i e v e i t ’s been NINE years? Lots of birthday wishes, new yarn, and other goodies were unwrapped during our four-day celebration. And this year, our friends from Fireside Pizza Company brought

their pizza oven, and we had the most “yumalicious” pizza ever! FYI; mark your calendars now. They will be here again for our 10th Annual Yarn Tasting in January! We know we promised not to have too much fun without y’all over the summer, but sometimes the yarn fun just can’t help itself. One year, you’ll just have to come down a little earlier and share the birthday cake with us. ‘Til then, we have saved everyone a seat, and we’re looking forward to catching up with you this winter. See you soon!

You can join in The Lamb’s Loom fun in person at 1102 Tamarack Ave. in McAllen. We are open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. Updates and other information are available on our website at thelambsloom.com Let’s continue to #stitchitforw a r d t o g e t h e r ! T h e r e ’s a l w a y s #loveineverystitch. •

Players Troupe is proud to announce the stage adaptation of the classic 1924 comic strip Little Orphan Annie by Harold Gray. Wednesday, November 15, through Saturday, November 18, there will be evening performances at 7 p.m. There will be an afternoon performance at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 19. Annie, the musical, is about a loveable orphan girl who is taken for the holidays from her horrible orphanage, owned by nasty Miss Hannigan, to a beautiful mansion. Annie steals the heart of mansion owner Oliver Warbucks, and he decides to help Annie find her real parents. This fall, the Sharyland Carpe

Diem Players Troupe has worked tirelessly to bring adventure to the stage with the adaptation of this popular musical. “Working on a musical, such as Annie, has been amazing. There has been so much hard work being put in by every single person involved,” Troupe president and stage manager Sarah Louallen said. Performances of Annie will be held in the Sharyland High School Auditorium at 1216 N. Shary Rd. in Mission. Doors will open promptly at 6:30 p.m. for the evening performances and at 2:30 p.m. for the afternoon show. The performance entrance fee of $10 for adults, $5 for children and high-school students, and $8 for adults 55+ may be paid at the door the day of all performances. •

Things I Have Learned

A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy

Bill Ward is a retired health-care administrator from Minnesota and a regular columnist, author, and untalented rock ‘n’ roll musician, playing with the band Night Ryders. He winters at Casa Del Sol in Donna. You can contact Bill by email at bwward@charter.net.

by Bill Ward Smooth is Still Alive

Today’s Wisdom: Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance, and when you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance. ~Lee Ann Womack Having joined the ranks of the retired a while ago, I struggled with the same adjustment issues that have faced so many others: the search for relevance and meaningful activity. The novelty of not going to work got old. The honey-do list was done--at least those items I was interested in doing. The garden was put to bed for the winter. That’s when the inevitable, “Now what?” came up. I answered the question by hopping into the car and heading south. Way south. That is where I saw something I don’t often see in my rural Minnesota community. I found people having “free-spirit fun.”

I attended an old-time country jam and have to say that most of the audience, including the band, looked bored. Then I attended some rock-n-roll dances and jams with some great, danceable music. I was shocked. The visuals were all wrong, but it didn’t take much imagination to see the 16-year-old spirit of folks emerge from those grey-haired, wrinkled bodies as they lost themselves on the dance floor. The ladies, especially, seemed to display that same “smooth” motion I first saw at a dance in my high-school gym in 1966 and on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. I am just as much in awe now as I was then. I also found myself in the same state of terror I felt in 1966 at the thought of getting out on the dance floor, myself, with a real girl. Perhaps that is why, in 1966, most of the folks on the floor were the gals. Today I see a few more guys with courage. What amazed me then and still amazes me now is that smooth motion the gals are capable of. Most of us guys at 16 had no concept of smooth. Guys did “awkward.” I was quite good at that. I also had another revelation. “Smooth” isn’t just a dance motion. Smooth is an attitude. It implies grace, presence in the moment, comfort in one’s own skin, self-confidence, a bit of showmanship, and the ability to both have--and be--fun with those around us. It is what most of us fell in love with in our gal or guy a long time ago. It is still in there somewhere. If you haven’t seen your “smooth” lately, maybe it is time to let it out. I’m just sayin’. (Oh, and if you don’t know where to let your own smooth shine, email me. I will be glad to tell you about South Texas in the winter. The place “rocks.”) •

Rice and Beans with Corn and Tomatoes by Randy Hoelscher, Winter Texan

This recipe is as tasty as it is beau-

tiful. We made it for a meatless main dish, but it is equally well-suited for a delicious side dish. It is easy to make, requiring only a single skillet. This dish comes together quickly, so I suggest prepping the ingredients before beginning the cooking process. Three of us had this for dinner and had some left over, so let us say it serves four as a main course or six as a side dish. 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil 1 16-ounce package of frozen sweet corn, thawed Salt and pepper to taste 1 yellow onion, chopped fine ½ teaspoon salt 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 tablespoon canned, minced chipotle pepper in adobo sauce 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon dried oregano, preferably Mexican 2 15-ounce cans black beans, rinsed and drained

2 cups vegetable broth (I used chicken broth, and it was fine.) 1 cup long grain white rice, rinsed About 12 ounces grape tomatoes, quartered ¼ cup (or to taste) chopped, fresh cilantro leaves 5 scallions, sliced thin 1 tablespoon lime juice More salt and pepper, as desired In a 12-inch, nonstick skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of the olive oil until shimmering. Add the corn to the pan and fry, stirring frequently, until the kernels begin to brown and pop; this should take 3 to 5 minutes. Set the corn aside, in a bowl, and sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste. Add one tablespoon of oil, the chopped onion, and about ½ teaspoon of salt to the frying pan and cook at medium-high heat until the onions are softened. Add the minced garlic, chipotle, cumin, and oregano and cook for about 30 seconds, until fragrant. Add the beans, broth, and rice to the pan and mix. Reduce heat

to low, cover, and simmer, stirring occasionally until the rice is tender. This will take 15 minutes or so. If

the rice is dry, add a little bit more broth or water. While the rice is cooking, prepare the tomato mixture. Combine the tomatoes, cilantro, scallions, lime juice. and the remaining one tablespoon of olive oil; season with salt and pepper. Remove the pan of rice and beans from the heat and spread the corn mixture on top of them. Cover and let rest for five minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork, check the seasoning, sprinkle the tomato-and-cilantro mixture on top of the rice and beans, and serve. •
