Hello from beautiful South Texas! I am delighted to provide you with this copy of our Winter Texan Living. I hope you will come to see us soon.

The Rio Grande Valley is home to over 100,000 retirees who come for the winter to soak up the sunshine; enjoy our bountiful outdoor activities, such as golf, shuffleboard, and fishing; and take advantage of the low cost of living.

With over 175 retirement communities and RV resorts across the region, there is truly something for everyone. Whether you prefer a resort community with swimming pools, pickleball, ceramics, golf, and a never-ending activity schedule or a modest park with limited activities, we have both--and everything in between.

You’ll find our locals incredibly welcoming. We recognize the importance of tourism and the visitors who come for a week, a month or a season. We find that, each year, the stay gets a little longer because, in Texas, you’re not a Snowbird. You’re a Winter Texan.

Come and see why South Texas is the winter destination of choice for over 100,000 retirees!

We’re just connecting the dots.

to Winter in South Texas Taking the Road Less Traveled

Rob and Gloria Taylor start the new year heading south. Way south. The couple hails from Belleville, Ontario, Canada, and after the holidays, their sites are set on Alamo, Texas. By car or RV, that’s a 2,000-mile stretch--if you took the shortest route recommended by Google Maps. But the Taylor’s aren’t direct-route people. They enjoy meandering off the beaten path.

The couple met on a blind date on Friday the 13th (January 1995), and they’ve been traveling together ever since. They wed in the summer of 1996 in their garden under a pergola built by Rob and his dad; they catered their own reception and cleared out the garage for the dance floor.

Gloria retired last year and Rob followed suit, submitting his resignation on the last day of a vacation in St. Lucia. They love to be together and enjoy visiting warm destinations.

Gloria is no stranger to South Texas. Her parents, Gerald and Donna Russett, have been winter visiting since 1999 and have a home in Alamo Palms RV Resort. Gloria would visit them for a week or longer each year, sometimes driving her parents back home.

During those trips, they would meander home, visiting cities like Memphis, Tennessee, and Paducah, Kentucky, along the way. Subsequently, Gloria would blog about their adventures to the delight of her friends.

Rob’s first real foray into “Winter Texan living” took place in 2022. The Russetts had opted to stay in Canada, so he and Gloria stayed at her parents’ Alamo home and tackled a multitude of home-improvement projects.

“Rob’s really handy and can fix anything,” says Gloria.

When they weren’t re-covering chairs or fixing faucets, the Taylors trekked the nearby Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge, played cards with friends, and walked the beaches of nearby South Padre Island.

The Taylors are part of a new generation of retirees choosing to experience South Texas during the winter months--a very active generation. In addition to their projectbased pursuits, Gloria practices yoga at the “fantastic gym” while Rob enjoys the woodshop and water volleyball.

Together, they like to hike and feed their culinary passion through home cooking and visiting local restaurants. Rob says there are plenty of options within close proximity.

They report they are seeing more couples in their 50s visiting Alamo Palms; some are even third-generation. And, Gloria says, she’s seeing a shift from what was offered in the late 1990s to today, such as the addition of pickle ball courts. (Alamo Palms has indoor and outdoor courts.)

But one thing remains the same, Gloria says. The people here love Winter Texans!

“There’s so much here to do!” Gloria says, as she and Rob begin to list the amenities and activities offered at Alamo Palms: darts, dancing, card games, and live entertainment. “Honestly, you can never do it all,” says Gloria.

Then there’s the swimming pool. Gloria and Rob really light up, talking about the pool. “We’ve travelled a lot, and to find a pool that’s as warm as this one…” Rob trails off as Gloria declares, “Oh, it’s spectacular!”

The Taylors have made great friends and enjoy the broader community of the Rio Grande Valley. In the spring, they were already planning their next winter visit. They want to visit SpaceX, hike Estero Llano Grande, spend time in San Antonio, and maybe even venture on a tour of the art community of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico.

Rob and Gloria carried on the tradition of meandering home. On their way back to Belleville in March, their path took them to West Texas, with a stop in San Angelo, a weekend with friends in Albuquerque, and a family visit in Ohio, and Gloria creatively shared their adventures with friends and family.

Once home, Rob helps the Russetts with their farm and Gloria returns to her part-time dream job at a local florist. Her parents are considering a return to Alamo in 2023, which would mean the Taylors would come down in their 35-foot RV. Gloria emphatically added, “One way or another, we’re coming!” because, as Rob says, “It’s winter camp for adults!”

Why the RGV?Experience South Texas

When asked ‘Why choose the R.G.V.?’ Karen Price simply states, in her distinct southern drawl, “It’s just fun!” In 1999, after retiring from teaching, Karen and her husband, Jerry, left their home state of North Carolina to travel by R.V. During a stop in Nova Scotia, Canada, they met a couple who raved about South Texas. “They told us we had to come down here; we had no clue.” The Prices came down in 2001, spent three winters here, and eventually became permanent residents, also known as Converted Texans.

Karen shares how they have visited other states known for warmer winters but fell in love with the Rio Grande Valley because it’s more economical, and they wanted to dance. Yes, dance. “All we knew was South Carolina beach music, the shag. We wanted to learn the Texas twostep.” When the Prices made the decision to enjoy the local amenities year-round, they found their permanent home at Sunshine Country Club Estates in Harlingen when they visited for a dance.

The Rio Grande Valley, or RGV, is located at the southern tip of Texas, bordering Mexico. The region is made-up of four counties: Starr, Hidalgo, Willacy, and Cameron. It’s home to approximately 300 RV parks and resorts. The cost of living tops the list of its many appealing qualities. In 2020, U.S. News & World Report referred to the city of McAllen--located in Hidalgo County--as having the lowest cost of living for a metro city in the United States.

Sergio Contreras is the president and CEO of the RGV Partnership, a nonprofit that drives collaboration between local businesses and elected officials, with emphasis on transportation, health care, the economy, and, more

recently, tourism. Tens of thousands of Winter Texans-retirees looking to escape cold weather--visit deep South Texas every year for extended periods. The Valley welcomes them with open arms, as Sergio succinctly states. “We see them as part of our community, part of our DNA.”

Larry Mainz and his wife, Jan, are Converted Texans by way of Wisconsin. Larry traveled the country as a truck driver before retiring in 2002. The couple made their home at Lamplighter Park in Palmview. Larry talks up the Valley at every opportunity, and his enthusiasm is contagious. “In order to sell something, you have to have a good product. The R.G.V. is a good product!” Larry agrees the low cost of living and proximity to Mexico are part of its appeal but emphasizes the friendliness of the people as a big draw.

“We’re a friendly bunch! We recognize the impact our Winter and Converted Texans have on the area, and we’re grateful for it,” says Kristi Collier, owner of Welcome Home R.G.V., which markets and promotes the Valley. For 13 years, Kristi has connected visitors to local businesses and services, leading the charge to ‘welcome home’ winter visitors each year with open arms. And communities and cities follow suit, hosting festivals and annual events specifically geared toward winter visitors. “It’s important to feel at home, even when you are a visitor,” says Sergio.

A welcoming community is a bonus, but a safe one is of utmost consideration for anyone visiting or moving to a new area. Like any city or region, the Valley is not without its faults, but when it comes to safety, Valley cities consistently rank high in the state and in the

18 a publication of Welcome Home RGV 2023 come visit us

U.S. in surveys that utilize F.B.I. crime statistics. In 2019, McAllen ranked 4th-safest city in the nation by 247wallst.com and 26th in Texas (out of nearly 3,000) by backgroundchecks.org. The city of Mission, also located in Hidalgo County, ranks safest city in the RGV and 23rd in the state by safehome.org.

Larry credits an abundance of law enforcement, both local and federal, with ensuring the safety of the community. He makes a point of engaging with local law enforcement at every opportunity. He reports his encounters are always friendly, including with the lead law officer in Hidalgo County. “We’ve run into the sheriff, and he always stops by and tips his hat to my wife.”

Retirees must also consider access to good health care. The RGV Partnership recently conducted an economic impact study on the RGV health-care and bioscience industry that showed 43 percent of new jobs created between 2009 and 2019 were in this industry. The study states, “The RGV’s health-care and bioscience industry is both large and diverse.” Sergio says the results of the survey signify the industry continues to grow. And, he says, “We continue to educate ourselves on the services that are needed.” He goes on to say the accessibility of health care is evident throughout the region, primarily in

Hidalgo and Cameron counties, with a significant number of facilities ready to serve.

The Mainzes heard misconceptions about the Valley before their first visit and say they have found none to be true. Newcomers are often pleasantly surprised. In 2019, Welcome Home R.G.V. hosted a reunion tour in the Midwest and gave away a free stay offered by local resorts. A couple who had never visited South Texas won. Kristi reports, “We matched up their interests with the amenities of the park and gave them a two-week stay at Paradise Park in McAllen. They wound up buying a lot during their stay!”

There are approximately 300 RV parks and resorts in the Rio Grande Valley. In a typical season, parks and resorts are open to outside guests joining in on activities. When the Prices made the decision to enjoy the local amenities year-round, they found their permanent home at Sunshine Country Club Estates. Karen says the close proximity to so many other resorts expands the options. “These parks are so close, you can do more activities,” she says.

“Once they see the difference down here, they get it!” Kristi says. Karen and Jerry and Larry and Jan get it. Larry sums up the RGV like this: “If you’ve ever been to Disneyland, it’s like that; it’s a magical feeling!”

Let’s Go to Mexico! Órale!

While driving from home to a nearby city is commonplace, in the Rio Grande Valley, we can hop in the car and head to our neighboring country-MEXICO!

Before you go, prepare yourself for a day of shopping, mouthwatering food and margaritas, and mucho fun!

While there are several Mexican towns along the southern border of Texas, the most popular one to visit when you’re in South Texas is Nuevo Progreso, usually referred to as just Progreso. Located just seven miles south of Weslaco and immediately south of the town of Progreso Lakes, Texas, Nuevo Progreso beckons native, Converted, and Winter Texans across the international bridge with all it has to offer.

You can exchange your American dollars for pesos at one of the exchange houses on the American side, but there’s really no need to do so. The restaurants and shops in Nuevo Progreso are fully equipped to take American money and to give you change, as well.

Before you go, stick your passport in your purse or wallet because you’ll need it to return to the U.S. You can also get back with a Trusted Traveler card.

You can drive across the bridge, though most of us park in one of two expansive parking lots on the Texas side of the bridge. For just $2, you can park your car for an hour or an entire day.

It will cost you $1 on the American side to cross over to Nuevo Progreso. Stop and take a selfie or a picture of your group at the point on the bridge where you are entering Mexico. Once you reach the other side, you will have to put your purses and any bags you are carrying into an x-ray machine. The process is quick and easy and is done to keep us and our Mexican neighbors safe.

Now you’re on your own to visit the vendors who line the sidewalks and to stop in shops carrying the superb craftsmanship of Talavera pottery, colorful Mexican tops

22 a publication of Welcome Home RGV 2023 adventures in the RGV

and dresses for women and the ever-popular guayabera shirts for men, sugared nuts and pepitas, and a wide selection of your favorite liquor.

The first large shop you’ll come upon is El Disco, located one block from the bridge. Before or after you shop, stop in Pancho’s Bar & Grill, located inside El Disco, for one of their traditional or mango margaritas. Pair your drinks with their mouthwatering panchos, smothered in cheese. And be sure to get some of their famous guac!

It’s a good idea to stay in groups of at least two and to remain on the beaten path, which is the main street in town. Just in those four to five blocks, you will find countless shops, street vendors and bars, and mucho mas.

Once you decide it’s time to return to the U.S., get a quarter ready for the turnstile leading out of Nuevo Progreso and back over the bridge. Halfway across, Customs and Border Patrol agents will ask for a wave of your passport. Once you reach the other side of the

bridge, you will go through Customs. An agent will ask for your passport and will then have you remove your hat and sunglasses so he or she can snap a picture before you verbally declare what you’re bringing back. If you have cigarettes or liquor, you’ll stop at a station outside the Customs doors to pay taxes.

So grab your friends, your passport, and plenty of dinero, and head over to Nuevo Progreso. Órale!

Closer to Nature on South Padre Island

Most travelers envision South Padre Island as a beach vacation spot with water sports as the main attraction, yet we have much more to offer, such as an expansive ecotourism industry. The natural barrier island is home to a diverse ecosystem that provides a unique experience for tourists to interact with the local flora and fauna. South Padre Island's most prominent attractions are based on ecotourism and allow visitors to learn more about wildlife and how South Padre Island plays a vital role in migrating birds, nesting sea turtles, and local dolphins pods.

The South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary is a nonprofit organization whose primary goal is to educate guests about the birds found on South Padre Island and to emphasize the importance of environmental conservation. They have an expansive facility, with over 43 acres of wetlands, over 3,000 feet of boardwalk, five bird blinds, and a five-story viewing tower, all to provide a unique birding experience. When touring the property, you can choose a guided tour or roam freely. Aside from the birding activities, they also have an alligator sanctuary, taking in alligators found by local authorities or communities that do not have the resources to house them. Once the alligators arrive, Sanctuary staff will help assimilate them into the relaxing South Padre Island lifestyle.

One of the most popular activities on South Padre Island is the dolphin watch and eco-tours offered by local boating companies. The dolphin-watch tours are simple tours; the boats head out and look for pods of dolphins swimming in the waters. Dolphins love the attention they receive from tourists and enjoy riding the waves

produced by the boats. Eco-tours are similar; the only difference is that the crew drags a net behind the ship to present the marine life living in the bay. Guests get a chance to hold the sea creatures in their hands before releasing them back into the water. These tours are very relaxing and are the perfect activity if you’re looking for a calm ride on the water.

If you’re hoping to visit some of South Padre Island’s oldest residents, visit Sea Turtle Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing any injured sea turtles that make their way to South Padre Island. The first building is the Main Hospital, where they house their newest patients, as well as turtles that will eventually be released back into the wild. A boardwalk connects the two buildings, which offers a beautiful view of the bay. Following the boardwalk, visitors will find the Education Center, where the staff informs the public about different endangered species of sea turtles and ongoing conservation efforts to help all marine life. Visitors will find interactive displays, a museum, and a gift shop inside the Education Center. Outside, you have access to the resident tanks. Here you learn about each sea turtle and how it ended up on SPI. You can also catch one of the facility’s Turtle Talks, colorful presentations held in a theater overlooking the water.

All of the ecotourism facilities are open year-round and offer their services rain or shine. Families, couples, and solo travelers can enjoy these activities and learn how South Padre Island coexists with its natural environment. For further information on South Padre Island, visit sopadre.com.
