I can’t tell you how excited I am to start this season! It’s been a wonderful summer, spending time with our Converted Texans and planning for what we’re sure will be our best season yet. Our most exciting summer project is our website makeover. We are still adding features and look forward to launching our new mobile app soon. Everyone at our RV resorts have been busy this summer, too! The off season is when they have time to dive into maintenance projects, plan new activities, and do a whole lot more.

And just like that, this is the last Welcome Home Winter Texan of the season! It has been a wonderful winter, and we have enjoyed sharing it with you!

I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to stick around, to extend your stay for a few days, weeks, months... or even indefinitely! The fun keeps coming; we keep dancing, dining, and having fun all summer long, and we’d love to have you join us.

If you feel you must go, I’d like to invite you to help us spread the word about South Texas to everyone you meet along the way and those you see every day back home. Invite them to join you next season! We would love to have them join us. The more the merrier!

I know I speak for the entire Rio Grande Valley community when I say we can’t wait to see you! Our Winter Texan community is so important to our region. From the dollars you spend to the time you share, your presence in our communities is a welcome sight!

This September, we will host our second, not so annual (thanks to the pandemic), Winter Texan Reunion Tour, so we’d also like to invite you to join us at one of our stops. Stay tuned as we announce our travel plans.

We can’t wait to see all of you, swap stories about summer shenanigans, and welcome those who are here for the first time! See you soon!

Dr. García’s Gold Exhibit Now Open

Dr. García’s Gold, an exhibit located at the Museum of South Texas History in Edinburg, tells the story of gold buried under a house in San Diego, Texas, almost a century ago.

It has been a real pleasure to serve you this year. We will work throughout the summer months on all of our programming so next season will be even better than this one!

Safe travels, Y’all! •

The long and winding story of Dr. García’s Gold begins with small-town doctor José García, who operated a medical practice in San Diego between 1900 and the 1950s. According to family documents, García began to acquire gold coins in the 1890s. In 1933, García buried about 500 American gold coins under his house in San Diego after President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order to collect gold held privately by Americans.

When Dr. García’s daughter, Gloria, was about to marry Hector López in 1950, he told Hector and Gloria about the gold. He said he kept it for Gloria so she could take care of

her brother, “Lico.” For many years, Hector crawled under the house in search of the gold but never found it. Upon Dr. García’s death in 1964, Gloria and Hector assumed ownership of the San Diego house. In 1976, they sold the house to a man named Alejandro López.

It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating the long-awaited return of so many of our friends. Now, here we are bidding you farewell and safe travels. All of us at Welcome Home RGV look forward to your return. Plans are

The story of the gold takes a dramatic turn in 2002 when Alejandro found a leaky sewer line and called on town plumber Serafín Treviño to fix it.

Treviño’s path to the leaking pipe was through a trap door that was installed in the kitchen in 1929. Treviño thought he needed more space to maneuver, so he began to dig and eventually unearthed a big chunk of mud enmeshed with gold coins. Instead of reporting the find to Alejandro, Treviño took the gold home and began to sell individual

gold coins in the community.

When Alejandro learned of this, he went to Treviño to claim that the gold was given to him by his father. Treviño did not believe Alejandro, so they sued each other for rightful ownership of the coins.

Word of the trial at the Duval County Courthouse over legal possession of the gold made it into the local news. In nearby Alice, Texas, Gloria and Hector found out, and they promptly approached Alejandro and Treviño. They told them that Gloria’s father buried the gold under his house many years before. Gloria argued the gold was her birthright.

Alejandro said it was his, and so did Treviño. Gloria and Héctor then took legal action to gain possession of the gold. In 2004, a Duval County jury decided the gold’s rightful owner. MOSTHistory shares the story of the legal proceedings that determined legal ownership and will also examine the broader story that shaped Dr. García, Gloria, and Hector as significant actors in the history of South Texas.

Dr. García’s Gold is included in the museum’s regular admission fees. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.

For more information on the exhibit, please visit mosthistory.org/events or call the museum at 956-383-6911.

About The Museum of South Texas History

The Museum of South Texas History is located in downtown Edinburg at 200 N. Closner Boulevard on the Hidalgo County Courthouse square. Founded in 1967 as the Hidalgo County Historical Museum in the 1910 Hidalgo County Jail, the Museum has grown over the decades--through a series of expansions--to occupy a full city block. In 2003, following the completion of a 22,500-square-foot expansion, it was renamed the Museum of South Texas History to better reflect its regional scope. Today, the Museum preserves and presents the borderland heritage of South Texas and Northeastern Mexico through its permanent collection and the Margaret H. McAllen Memorial Archives and exhibits, spanning prehistory through the 20th century. For more information about MOSTHistory, visit MOSTHistory.org or call 956-383-6911. •

Fluttering Fun and Festivities Migrate to Kingsville for Annual Butterfly Blitz

M onarch butterflies are fluttering into Kingsville, and we invite you to visit, too, during our Butterfly Blitz, October 20-23. This is the third year for the event, brought to you by Keep Kingsville Beautiful, in partnership with Monarch City USA, the King Ranch, and the City of Kingsville.

City of Kingsville Tourism Director Janine Reyes said the festival was designed to celebrate the city’s designation as a Monarch City USA.

“We have a network of six gardens tailor made to facilitate the journey of the monarch butterflies,” Reyes said. “It was a commitment we made in 2020 when we received our Monarch City USA designation.”

The city consulted with experts and installed native milkweed. The partners who host Butterfly Buds Gardens agree to keep the space pesticide-free to provide a safe space for all pollinators. A variety of queens, swallowtails, sulfurs and even hummingbirds can be spotted at the Butterfly Buds Gardens daily. They are free and open to the public, except for the garden located on Naval Air Station-Kingsville. Visitors must have base access to visit that site.

Butterfly Blitz attendees are encouraged to take a self-guided tour of our Butterfly Buds Gardens to see what species they can spot. There will be a free Kingsville Butterfly Bio-

Blitz competition in iNaturalist throughout the weekend, with guests competing to win one of the top three prizes for sighting and capturing the most species.

The King Ranch Visitor Center will be offering Winged Wonder Tours--developed and offered only for the festival--Friday and Sunday at 9 a.m. and at 2 p.m. Eighty-one species of butterflies have been recorded on the King Ranch Visitor Center grounds. Tours will be led by King Ranch Visitor Program Manager Janice Travis and will focus on identifying butterflies, dragonflies, damselflies, moths, and birds that can be found on the legendary King Ranch. Reservations must be made in advance online or by calling 361-592-8055.

There will also be free Pollinators of the Night Exhibits Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. The experience pairs attendees with nature experts who use a blacklight to capture a variety of arthropods, such as beetles and moths. Citizen scientists can help collect insects found in the community and document their sightings to provide quality data for research. Pollinators of the Night will take place at the L.E. Ramey Golf Course Friday and at Dick Kleberg Park Saturday.

The Butterfly Blitz Festival kicks off Saturday morning with a 5K Monarch run at Dick Kleberg Park. Entry is $20 and includes T-shirts and award metals. Music and activities will take place at the park starting at 9 a.m. The

festival is free to the public, and the event offers a lively opportunity to see and participate in the Monarch Watch, tagging and releasing farm-raised and wildcaught monarch butterflies. The tagging program is a large-scale community science project that began in 1992 to understand the dynamics of the monarch’s amazing fall migration. The event also offers the opportunity to learn from experts about pollinator gardening and nature photography using iNaturalist to identify and log pollinators. Guests will also enjoy live music while sipping on monarch mimosas and other beverages at Dick Kleberg Park. Find out more about Butterfly Blitz activities at KingsvilleTexas. com. •

Things I Have Learned

A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy

Today’s Wisdom: Well, you give me too much credit for foresight and planning. I haven't got a clue what the hell I'm doing. ~Robert B. Parker

A few weeks ago, I was repairing some wiring in a taillight on my car. I had the big, red, plastic lens off and laying on the bumper while I was reconnecting some trailer wiring. Somehow I managed to bump the lens, resulting in it crashing to the concrete drive. When I picked it up, there was a nice new crack in the red lens “thingy.” The plan was to fix the wiring. Breaking the lens was not in the plan.

hobbies, even just peaceful evenings on the front porch lay ahead of them…until one or the other got a really bad diagnosis. All of a sudden, the plan is changed.

One of the things I have learned is that we don’t always get to write our own story. Sometimes other factors outside our control change it. The outline of the book of our life turns out to be only a draft version.

ented rock ‘n’ roll musician, playing with the band Night Ryders. He winters at Casa Del Sol in Donna. You can contact Bill by email at bwward@charter.net.

As first a police officer and later a health-care administrator, I have seen hundreds--maybe thousands--of situations where events developed that were not in the plan. I’m sure my presence at the side of their car was not in the plan of all the drivers I pulled over. Neither was my presence at the front door at 2 a.m., with a death message, in the plans of a few people when they went to bed at night.

I have also had several good friends make wonderful retirement plans, as couples. Travel,

We do, however, get to actually live out our life story. It may not be the story we planned, but it is the story we have been dealt. Even then, what is dealt is only the chapter heading, not the fine detail. That detail we live out by our own decisions. Are we kind, generous, fun, supportive, and caring? Is our world better because we are in it? Will we be missed when we check out?

These parts of our story don’t change with a knock on the door, a visit to the doctor, or the red light in our rearview mirror. We own them and get to keep them. It is easy to lament about the stuff that changes plans. Sometimes those things hurt. In the end, though, I wonder if they will matter as much as the things we control.

I’m just sayin’. •

Keep McAllen Beautiful Announces Arbor Day Celebration

K eep McAllen Beautiful (KMB) is hosting its 12 th Annual Arbor Day Celebration Saturday, November 4, 2023, at a new location: Westside Park, 1000 S. Ware Rd. in McAllen. This fundraiser will benefit Keep McAllen Beautiful, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, and will help increase awareness of the importance of planting and caring for trees in McAllen.

The Arbor Day Celebration is a run, bike, and walk event that benefits everyone interested in personal health and the environment. All events are open for individuals, from amateur to professional level; there is an option for everyone. The day will begin with a 25Mile and100K bike rides, a 5K and 10K runs, a 2K kids’ run, and an ongoing Tree Workshop. The new location will feature exciting new experiences for participants.

The 25-mile bike ride is a scenic journey that passes several city parks

leading to the turnaround point at Tres Lagos Park on Ware Road. The 100K cyclists will continue through some of the Rio Grande Valley's most beautiful and tranquil agricultural areas, will pass the historic Moore Air Force Base, and then continue on to

McCook.

For the 5K and 10K runs, the new location will be a dual terrain run, where runners will have the opportunity to run on the street and then experience a trail run surrounded by wonderful natural beauty coursing

through the McAllen Nature Center. This will be a truly unique experience. The kids’ 2K run will take place around the Westside Park’s baseball field.

The Arbor Day Celebration will feature music, educational booths, and much more. Additionally, free trees will be available for the public. Last year, KMB distributed over 1,000 trees. Whether you cycle, run, or just enjoy a day in the park, the Arbor Day Celebration is a great event for the entire family. And you’ll have the opportunity to take home a tree!

Mark your calendars and come out and make our community more beautiful while having a wonderful time. Registration is now open; sponsorship and volunteer opportunities are available, as well. Visit the Keep McAllen Beautiful website at keepmcallenbeautiful.org or call 956-681-4562. •
