pring has arrived! It’s the time of year when we begin spring-cleaning, sprucing up our yards, firing those grills up and planning for our summer. This is when we all start to find time to get outside and enjoy the perfect temperatures in our wonderful city. April is the month when we celebrate Fiesta festivities all over San Antonio. At Welcome Home, we are especially excited for the highly anticipated event, A Taste of the Northside, which we are honored to sponsor once again. The proceeds from this event benefit the Brighton Center, one of our community’s greatest foundations benefiting our local children. We have children from Brighton Center featured on our cover, along with this year’s Queen of the Vine, Janine Sauer. Brighton Center’s, A Taste of the Northside will be held at The Club At Sonterra again this year. Welcome Home will have our newspapers on all the shuttles so be sure to pick one up and read about the businesses and children in this area. Living Through Giving is sponsoring its annual We Got Your Back drive to collect backpacks for children in San Antonio that have been displaced by abuse, neglect or family disruption and are currently in the care of Child Protective Services. The goal this year is to make sure all of these children will be able to start school with a new backpack and school supplies. Living through Giving is also excited to be taking part in The Big Give SA on May 5th. This is an opportunity to everyone in San Antonio to donate to the charity of their choice. By Stefanie Young and Kristine Garza righton Center’s Queen of the Vine Campaign offered a new and more personal way for San Antonio’s leading women to help raise funds for children with developmental delays and disabilities. The campaigns feature women who have dedicated their time to a vision where children have the support they need through difﬁcult times. This year’s 2015 Queen of the Vine candidates were Janine Sauer, Kosha Vriseno and Colleen Douglas. From August to February, these dynamic and passionate women committed to give their time, talent and resources by engaging in a spirited competition to raise funds for Brighton Center. This year, the candidates collectively rose over $225,000 in support of Brighton Center! Featured on the cover is Janine Sauer, the 2015 Queen of the Vine. Her inspiration for running came from her beautiful 10 year old daughter Kaitlin. Kaitlin entered the world with a rare condition, Amniotic Band Syndrome, and has touched many hearts with her bravery, determination and ability to be “just like everyone else”. n my (reluctant) pursuit of technology, I am proud to say I have come a long way since “Hey, how do I turn this thing on?” After mastering the “power” button, I moved on to loftier goals such as “saving” and “creating files,” activities I have yet to do in my actual office. It does get a bit discouraging, however, when just as I finish (barely) learning a new skill, my neighbors (kindergarten) daughter informs me that it is actually an old skill and would I like to learn the right way to do it? Humbling to say the least, but the price is right; a couple of chocolate chip cookies later and I am in the know once again!

My own kids want to keep me ignorant of course. My teen son tries to get away with “virtually” taking out the trash. Wouldn’t that be nice? Just push a button and Whhooosh! It’s gone! I could really use a virtual “clean the toilet” button or better yet, a “fold the laundry” button. Now THAT is technology I can really get excited about. So I’m feeling all “hey, I’m good, I’m ready for something else but what?” Some of my friends would ask, “Do you facebook?” and I am thinking, “Uh, I’m a teacher. My face is in a book most of the time.” But now of course it means something totally different. Now Facebook is a VERB and anyone who doesn’t DO IT has a cool factor of -3. I am still digging myself out of my -5 rating (when I had to dance in front of my son and 750 of his friends at a pep rally) so I can’t afford NOT to facebook. The results: My picture is sideways. I have 3 friends. I am being stalked. I have (according to my page, which I don’t know how to add to) no skills, no career, no goals, no bffs, no address, no email, no favorite songs, food, bands, purses, peppers, hair products or Bath and Bodyworks fragrances. I don’t “like” anything or anyone. Nobody is “friending” (also a verb) me. I guess I will head over to my neighbor’s so she can help me (after her Dora the Explorer is over). Lopez Choir Earns Sweepstakes Trophies In UIL

Submitted By Jeanette Shoaf onday, March 2nd and Tuesday, March 3rd, the Lopez 7th and 8th grade Choral Department participated in a UIL competition held at Judson High School, in San Antonio for all NEISD middle schools and surrounding school districts. The UIL Concert/Sight reading contest is Lopez Choir’s version of the “Super Bowl”. It is their one chance out of the year to show everyone what they have learned from August until the present time. There are two sections to the contest with the ﬁrst being the “concert” and the second being “sightreading”. Concert- Each competing choir is required to perform three pieces, one of which must be sung a cappella (without accompaniment). Three concert judges will each give the choir a rating which

ranges from 1-5 with a 1st division being the highest. The judges listen for accuracy of pitch, rhythm and interpretation of the piece. The three scores from the judges are averaged together for a ﬁnal score. Choirs are judged against a standard and do not directly compete against other choirs. Sight-reading- This is a skill that all of their choirs work on every day. Sightreading is the ability to sing a piece of music without hearing it prior to the performance. Neither the director nor the students have viewed the sight-reading piece before receiving it in the contest room. Students and their directors are given 6 minutes to talk, chant, and work through the rhythms for the piece. Neither the students nor the director can sing, hum or create any sounds that can be mistaken for actual pitches during the study time. After the 6 minutes of study time, the choir must perform the piece

as written. Following the first performance, two additional minutes are given to fix any mistakes made during the first reading. A final score (rating) is based on the director’s instructions, the use of study time and ultimately the final reading of the piece. Three sight-reading judges will each give the choir a rating which ranges from 1-5 with a 1st division being the highest. The judges listen for accuracy of pitch, rhythm and the ability to sing the piece the choir has been given. The three scores from the judges are averaged together for a final score. Judges for this UIL event are T.M.A.A certified and are hired from outside our immediate area. All choirs compete against a standard, and therefore, more than one choir may receive a 1st division rating. Choirs who receive an average rating of a “1” in concert or in sight-reading receive a plaque. Choirs receiving an average rating

of a “1” in both concert and sight-reading receive a “Sweepstakes” trophy. The school is very proud to announce their 8th grade Girls Choir, Boys Choir, and 7th grade Girls Choir each received a Sweepstakes Trophy! All three Choirs received all 1’s in every category! Fantastic job choir students, your hard work and dedication have paid off. Also, Lopez Middle would like to thank Ms. Kelley, Choral Director, for being an awesome person, choir director, role model and teacher to their students.

Q: What care should I give to my Pebblestone? A: On new and older pebblestone, first acid wash the film of concrete off the rocks. Then, oxidize the surface to kill mold and mildew. Last, seal the stone to its natural wet look. Q: Why are the rocks from my pebblestone pool surround sticking to my feet? A: Moisture penetrates around the stones and changing temperatures expand the moisture and wedge the rocks out. To repair, acid wash the surface. Then, oxidize it to kill mold and mildew. Finally, lock the stones in with a clear acrylic sealer. You will also lock in the beautiful natural wet look. Q: Why is my Flagstone flaking &

The Royal Gatsby Ball and a new Queen of the Vine!

righton Center’s Queen of the Vine Campaign has been a great way for San Antonio’s leading women to help raise funds for children with developmental delays and disabilities. Every year, the campaign features strong and dedicated women who come together with a shared passion for supporting the children of Brighton Center. This year’s 2015 Queen of the Vine candidates were Janine Sauer, Kosha Vriseno and Colleen Douglas. From August to February, these dynamic and passionate women committed to give their time, talent and resources by engaging in a spirited competition to raise funds for Brighton Center. This year, the candidates collectively rose over $225,000 in support of Brighton Center! The candidates were crowned at this year’s Coronation event - The Royal Gatsby Ball – which was held on Friday, February 27th at the regal St. Anthony Hotel. The champagne flowed, guests dressed the part in flapper dresses and the sounds of Johnny P and The Wiseguys filled the air as the candidates anxiously waited for the final tallies to find out who would be crowned the Queen. Ultimately, Janine Sauer was crowned as the 13th Queen of the Vine after raising $86,719 through tireless fundraising, special events, donation collections and the Queen’s Ball Live and Silent Auction. Special congratulations to the 2015 Princess of the Vine, Kosha Vriseno who raised $55,650 and to the 2015 Brighton Ambassador Colleen Douglas who raised $29,374. 2015 Queen of the Vine Janine Sauer, featured on this month’s cover, is a remarkable woman indeed. Her inspiration for running came from her beautiful 10 year old daughter Kaitlin. Kaitlin entered the world with a rare condition, Amniotic Band Syndrome, and has touched many hearts with her bravery, determination and ability to be “just like everyone else.” Janine and her family moved to San Antonio in 2006 and Brighton Center quickly became an important part of helping them get settled by helping them find the right school, pediatrician and many other services important to Kaitlin’s care. Janine’s experience illustrates the impact of Brighton Center in helping the children of San Antonio who are born with developmental delays or disabilities become confident, accomplished and included with their peers just as they deserve. Brighton Center offers a holistic approach for families like Janine’s and has several programs to help children reach their full potential. Brighton’s Early Childhood Intervention Program (ECI) provides home based therapy services and case management for children ages 0-3 who have a developmental delay or disability and qualify for services. The Precious Minds, New Connections Program (PMNC) is a nurturing curriculum that provides parents with the tools and strategies to create a nurturing environment

that enhances their child’s development. Brighton Center’s Special Education and Support Services Program (SESS) provides families of children with disabilities the tools and knowledge to successfully advocate for their children in the public school system, and as their children grow into young adults, SESS assists them in setting goals and developing plans for their own futures. Brighton also has a NAEYC accredited Child Development Center and recently opened a Preschool Academy to better meet the needs of the community. Both learning centers are inclusive and serve children with and without disabilities. Brighton Center’s biggest fundraiser of the year, A Taste of The Northside, will be held April 22nd at the Club at Sonterra and 2015 Queen of the Vine Janine Sauer will have the honor of being Fiesta Royalty as a representative of the agency she passionately supports. This year’s event will feature a Stella Artois Beer Garden, elevated wine and spirits including Chateau St. Michele Brands and Herradura tequila, 5 live bands including Grooveline, Decibel Band, and THE MAX. Plus, the evening will end with a “BANG” courtesy of a special Fireworks Finale! All proceeds from A Taste of the Northside benefit Brighton Center. I had no other reason to come here. It was not the closest community to my family but it put Bob Olsen in my life and opened up the world of music for me again.” She is very proud of the members and believes their dedication and commitment have made it a success. “What is most special about our Chorus are our ages. Many are in their 80’s, 3 are in their 90’s and I will also turn 90 come June. Being able to sing in the Chorus at this time in our life, when they never

Chile Abuse Prevention Month With CASA

Submitted By Elisabeth Reise pril is Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness month in Texas – an important time to become aware of how our community is affected by child abuse. Child Protective Services just released its statistics for 2013-2014 and reported that there were roughly 5400 confirmed cases of child abuse or neglect in Bexar County. These numbers demonstrate that our community needs to work together to address this issue. In Bexar County, every 30 days an average of 154 children enter state protective custody because of abuse or neglect. Child Advocates San Antonio (CASA) advocates on behalf of these children who have been removed from their home due to abuse or neglect. CASA volunteers are appointed by the courts to advocate for the best interest of the child to make sure that their needs do not “fall through the cracks.” CASA volunteers serve as the “eyes and ears” for the judge

by gathering first-hand facts about the well-being of the child and providing that information to the judge. This allows the judge to have the necessary information to make the best decision regarding the future of that child. April should not only be a time that the community reflects upon child abuse, but also a time to act. The CASA program provides the community with an opportunity to fight for child abuse victims and to make a difference. A child with a CASA volunteer finds a permanent safe home 8 months faster than a child who does not have a CASA volunteer. Children are also 50% less likely to re-enter state custody. CASA volunteers have made such a positive impact on the lives of these children that the courts have requested that CASA provide every child abuse victim in state custody with a CASA volunteer. Every child deserves to have the hope a CASA volunteer can give. At the moment

we are only able to serve about half of children in state custody. This volunteer experience does not require any specific skill or education and only requires a few hours a month. We are looking for people that want to make a difference in a child’s life. We would love for you to join us in this mission! If you would like to learn more about

Regular visits have some great beneﬁts that

help your oral and overall health. Many of us are walking around with gum disease called gingivitis. Gingivitis can lead to more serious problems like bone loss, loose teeth, and tooth pain. If your gums bleed when you floss or brush you probably have gingivitis. Proper x-rays can help diagnose if the gum disease has led to more serious problems. In addition, a professional cleaning is recommended because your hygienist has special instruments to remove tartar (calcified plaque) that we are unable to clean even with proper brushing and flossing.

Their scholars are ready to meet this challenge and to excel in their individual contests PSIA is the most comprehensive academic extracurricular program in America for private and home-schooled students in grades 1st through 8th and it serves 47,500 students throughout Texas. The Johnsons have worked with youth in the San Antonio area in a volunteer capacity for over a decade and they felt a calling to bring a family oriented business to the community. That dream became a reality after Steve left the corporate world in 2013 and the couple selected College Nannies and Tutors as the fulﬁllment of that goal. College Nannies and Tutors is a national franchise company with a presence in 28 states. “When we looked at different business concepts, this company spoke to us loud and clear,” said Steve, co-owner with his wife Lynn. “The company’s mission of Building Stronger Families® really resonated with us. What that means for a family is that the role models have passed a thorough recruiting and hiring process including a complete background check. All role models complete basic training before they provide services for their families. The company takes care of paying the employees and managing the scheduling coordination. The employees benefit too. They are covered with worker’s compensation insurance, their employer taxes are paid, they receive ongoing training and they have a “legitimate” resume building W2 job. “For anyone that has hired a nanny on their own and gone through the recruiting, negotiation, scheduling and payroll process, they see the value in what we provide,” Steve explained. “One other significant advantage in our model is the ability for us to backfill our placement nannies with our on-call bench if the family’s nanny needs time off. When a family hires and manages their own nanny, that option is not on the table.” They opened their Stone Oak Learning center in September 2014 and have seen demand for their customized

one-on-one tutoring increase each month. “We are in a great location to serve the Stone Oak area and north central San Antonio,” Steve said. “We will be opening a Learning Center in the northwest San Antonio area later this year as well.” Their approach of using role model tutors that are subject matter experts creates a rapport with the student that aids in their subject matter comprehension. The role models relate to the students on a level that is different than the teacher or parent. This allows for a more open relational dialog and reinforces the concept of the student working with a role model tutor that they want to emulate on their own college journey someday. Since launching the business a year ago, the owners have given back to the educational community. This includes participating in area school organization’s silent auctions and school fairs. They committed in a signiﬁcant way this school year by sponsoring an Educator of the Month recognition at Ronald Reagan and Claudia Bird Johnson High Schools which includes a monthly public citation in the newspaper that recognizes educators that exemplify the College Nannies and Tutors core values. The company also sponsored several Free SAT and ACT practice test sessions for area high school students. Steve sums it up, “As members of the local business community, we feel compelled to recognize the efforts of our area educators, they have a tough, important job and rarely get the recognition they deserve.” Both owners credit their growth to the hard work and dedication of their role model nannies and tutors. “At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is the quality of the customer experience,” Steve emphasized. “The feedback from our follow up communications on our care and tutoring continues to provide us with the best indicator of their satisfaction with our services. Amazing Angie By Erin Kirwan e are never prepared to learn someone we care about has cancer. A few months ago I was standing in line at Dunkin Donuts thinking about the pumpkin latte I’d soon be sipping, when I saw this big smile beckoning me. She must think I’m someone else, I thought. So I glanced over my shoulder but no one was there but me. As I looked again it hit me, it was my friend Angie whom I last saw about a year ago while shopping at Steinmart. Our sons and daughters had attended preschool together. This couldn’t be Angie. This woman was wearing a scarf on her head. But the woman’s big infectious smile told me otherwise. That sense of unpreparedness rushed in. Tears filled me eyes. I didn’t know. I hadn’t heard. “It’s okay,” she said. “I have cancer.” My 37-year-old friend was fighting breast cancer. Angie went on to tell me about her diagnosis. Despite having a mom who fought breast cancer, she had been cleared not to get a mammogram until she was 40. But something deep inside Angie told her to go sooner. The mammogram found stage two breast cancer. While I wanted to sulk and say I’m sorry over and over, Angie wanted no part. The pity party was long over and she was in the business of kicking some cancer butt. Angie was to be a model in an upcoming Girls Night Out Fashion Show & Fundraiser. She had also volunteered to model for a unique Savvy Media project with a local boutique, encouraging women to not just be beautiful, but to do beautiful things. Life had handed Angie some pretty sour lemons and she was making lemonade. But that’s not to say Angie wasn’t feeling bad or didn’t have her moments. As I helped her pick out outfits to model, Angie talked more about how she was feeling. She was midway through chemotherapy. She was tired. The chemo and stress made her bloated. Her clothes weren’t fitting well. I probably should have kept my mouth shut but that’s difficult for me when I am attached to someone or something. So I told Angie about Pilates and how it had helped me not only look how I wanted to look, but get through a period of anxiety in my own life. I suggested, if she was up for it and the doctor thought it was safe, she could give it a try. Angie didn’t laugh. She didn’t run away. She said, “okay”. Angie texted me the following day and said she had discussed Pilates with her wellness nurse and team of doctors and been given the okay to begin. Angie signed up at Papillon Pilates. Papillon, in French, means butterfly. Climbing on a bed with springs and straps and all kinds of hooks to “exercise” would have scared my friend a year ago, but I guess when you are fighting for your life, you no longer spend a long time contemplating things or being afraid. So Angie jumped right in, feet first into resistance straps placed overhead. If she hadn’t been wearing a scarf on her head (which she always matches so beautifully with her outfits, including workout clothing), you would never know this woman curling her body up was in the midst

Life had handed Angie some pretty sour lemons when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She decided to fight back and made some pretty delicious lemonade along the way.

of fighting cancer. Angie’s movements were strong. Her mindset was even stronger. Though the exercises weren’t easy at first, Angie forged forward. Like a race horse with blinders who can only focus on the finish, Angie continued to come to class determined. After one month, the exercises became more routine. Her body, growing longer and leaner, began to stretch in ways it hadn’t before. Angie was beginning to not only see but feel results. When I asked her how she felt, a tiny smile. That one that Angie never seems to lose even among trying times, formed again in the corner of her mouth. “My joint pain has disappeared, my muscles no longer ache and I feel like I have more energy,” Angie said. Energy Angie needed to fight cancer. Today, almost two months postradiation, a stronger, leaner, more confident, happier, and cancer-free Angie can still be found legs raised and core engaged … on a reformer. Many days I am honored to land in a class next to my friend. I watch her move through exercises beautifully, gracefully, like a butterfly, transformed by an uncertain journey. That fear and sadness I unexpectedly came face to face with when running into Angie those months before, has been replaced by pride, admiration, and thankfulness. When life handed Angie cancer she chose to fight it … fiercely.

Queen Of The International Black And White Ball Submitted By Nadine Barrientos ongratulations to Alaya Barrientos Daoud on being crowned the 2015 Queen of the International Back and White Ball (IBWB). Founded in 1933 by Maria R. Magnon, the IBWB is dedicated to the promotion of goodwill, friendship and understanding between Mexico and the United States, particularly Texas. Prior to being crowned Queen, Alaya served on the royal court as a Junior Princess and assistant to the director for the previous 5 years. During that time she was honored to sing the National Anthem at the annual IBWB formal Christmas Gala and the Spring luncheon held in March. As Queen, Alaya will represent the IBWB at several local events, including San Antonio’s 2015 Fiesta celebration the coming April. Highlighting Fiesta will be her entrance into the Battle of Flowers and Fiesta Flambeau parades. Her reign will also include attending other civic events and several Black and White Balls throughout Mexico. Alaya is currently a freshman at Reagan High School, where she is a proud member of the Charmers Dance Team. She is also heavily involved in the local entertainment industry. She can be seen at difference venues and events around town singing current and classic songs. She represented District 9 in Our Part of Town Talent Competition, has performed at the Stone Oak Winterfestival and various political events for Leticia Van de Putte, Cris Medina and Tommy Adkisson. She has also had the privilege of being asked to sing the National Anthem for the Houston Astros and the San Antonio Scorpions. Although having sung at

Hardy Oak Family Movie Night Submitted By Jennifer Haag hat is a kid to do on a cold and rainy Friday evening? That’s easy; attend Family Movie Night at Hardy Oak Elementary! Hardy Oak students and their families were invited to come and watch Big Hero 6 on the BIG screen, February 27th. So while it was chilly outside, our families were warm and toasty curled up on sleeping bags, blankets and bean bag chairs as they watched the movie. Over 300 students, parents and siblings were treated to pizza, hot dogs, chips, popcorn, candy and drinks while they enjoyed some quality family time. Not only did our families spend time together, but the students were able to hang out with their classmates and meet new friends

This successful Multicultural Fair consisted of parents, students, teachers, relatives, many dance, voice and musical performers and of course a wonderful variety of world cuisine food samples. A very nice evening for the Lopez Community was had by the many guests. The program was full of joy and colors from folkloric Mexican dances, classic and contemporary music at the piano, pop rock and a wonderful German song concluded the evening. The atmosphere was ﬁlled with constant music and wonderful food aromas. Lopez Middle School would like to extend a grateful appreciation to all those

Spring Salads To Celebrate The Season

We’ve put some of our favorites together that will definitely put you in the mood for sunny skies. Up first, a beautiful Salade Niçoise with the traditional trimmings – beautiful organic lettuce, crisp green beans, fingerlings, niçoise olives and the star— yellow fin tuna. All tossed with a delicious Dijon vinaigrette. Check out this recipe and the others listed at goodtaste.tv/recipes. One of the most beautiful salads I’ve seen comes from a special place in my heart, the scenic Napa Valley. The chef at Simi Winery prepared a lovely lunch for us that included a delightful roasted beet salad that I’ll never forget. It’s not difficult to duplicate and

makes a stunning presentation. When a kale salad is on the menu, it’s usually my first choice. This kale and pancetta salad is a nice balance of flavors. It’s served warm…ever so slightly wilted with bits of pancetta and anchovy, all tossed in a delicious kalamata vinaigrette. Have you noticed that parsnips are all the buzz right now? Actually akin to the carrot and to parsley, parsnips are quite versatile, easy to work with and are a fun alternative to beets. We discovered a delicious German Roasted Parsnip Salad in New German Cooking that’s on the shelves now. This hearty parsnip salad is full of flavor with its hazelnuts, blue cheese and tasty wheat beer vinaigrette—a meal on a plate!

Reagan Wins Sixth Annual 2015 Fincke Cup

Reagan and Johnson went head to head during the Fincke Cup soccer match up!

Submitted By Stephanie Fincke The 6th Annual Fincke Cup soccer match was held on Tuesday, March 3rd at Blossom Athletic Center. This annual intense double header opened with the girls’ varsity match between Johnson and Reagan High School, in which the Reagan girls defeated the Johnson girls 6-2. Later that evening the Reagan boys bested the Johnson boys by a score of 2-0. With the aggregate score for the night ending with RHS 8 and JHS 2 the Reagan Rattlers took home the coveted Fincke Cup trophy and bragging rights for the year. The Fincke Cup is an annual soccer match played in memory of Ian Fincke who played soccer at Reagan before transferring to Johnson in 2008. Ian’s love for both schools and his passion for the game of soccer is the inspiration behind the event. A sportsmanship scholarship is awarded every year to a member of each

participating team as voted on by their coaches/teammates. This year’s scholarship awards were presented to Addie Bachle and Kyle Reynoso from Johnson High School and Derek Burris and Sarah Grace Freeman from Reagan High School. Ian’s Foundation was created to advance the safety and welfare of San Antonio’s youth through educational and recreational activities in memory of Ian. Ian›s Foundation has raised over $30,000 to give back to graduating seniors from local high schools pursuing higher education as well as to local organizations supporting underprivileged youth. Ian’s foundation continues to promote helmet safety to local schools and was the inspiration behind bringing wheelchair soccer to San Antonio to allow kids of all ages the opportunity to play soccer regardless of their disability. New Methodist ER Mobile App Submitted By Shirley Willis hether you ate too much at A Taste of the Northside and your tummy is rumbling or you got too much sun at the Fiesta Arts Fair or you wore the wrong shoes to Fiesta Oyster Bake, Methodist Healthcare is making it easier for Fiesta-goers to get help with a new mobile app. “As a sponsor of A Taste of the Northside, we want everyone to have a good time, but we also want to be there to help with medical emergencies.” said Marc Strode, CEO of the hospital. “Our new app will help the public get the help they need quickly and conveniently.” The Methodist ER app lists the Methodist Healthcare hospitals and emergency centers throughout the city with addresses, emergency room wait times for most Methodist facilities, and distance in miles from the app user. Detailed information is included on the services for each hospital. Call-A-Nurse for Children services are also listed for parents who need to reach specially trained pediatric nurses for immediate medical advice on an ill child. t’s past bed time. You are tired, frustrated, and your child is not even close to being finished with homework. It often feels like YOU are the one going to school all over again. If we’re struggling this much now, what will happen when he has to do all this by himself, and be accountable to 5 or more teachers next year? Will he be able to make it? For children: changing schools, changing teachers and their own changing bodies can create instability, moodiness and uncertainty. Academic struggles can add to the uncertainty and whittle away at self-esteem. For parents: schedules, book reports, projects and the fears of misguided decisions by their teens can make middle school years traumatic. It’s hard not to worry about the decisions that could endanger the child’s future. Some families seem to just breeze through those adolescent years. These are the families whose children are equipped with the skills required of students entering the sixth grades.

The following are 5 critical skills that your child will need in order to be successful in middle school: Study skills – Creating strategies to understand and retain course material, so that you don’t have to fumble through the internet looking for a tutor the day before the test. Writing skills – Being able to organize thoughts and putting them on paper clearly and concisely, so that you don’t have to pull an all-nighter re-writing her essay the night before it’s due. Note taking skills – Identifying relevant information and organizing it in ways that make sense. This will eliminate their dependence on you or on Google to review the material from class. Organization skills – Managing and keeping schedules, planning ahead, organizing materials will keep you from having to drive back to school in the morning because he forgot his completed homework. Social skills – Monitoring emotions and making smart choices while managing peer

pressure can be THE defining factor when dealing as a teen. You might notice that intelligence isn’t on the list. Your child could be the smartest girl in school (and by middle school, she may ACT like she is), but if she doesn’t have these requisite skills, she may feel as if the ground is falling under her. These 5 skills make up your child’s executive function. As executive function develops throughout adolescence, young people are given more responsibilities and control in their own decision making. The good news is that executive function skills can be trained. Building a strong foundation in these skills over the summer can be the difference between being the parent of a middle-schooler and being the one who has returned to middle school yourself. Reagan Orchestras Take Sweepstakes

Submitted By Katherine Johnston ractice makes perfect, and four groups of orchestra students from the Reagan Orchestra program showed off their best musical playing skills leading to all Superior ratings last month at UIL Concert and Sight-reading Contest held at Reagan and Madison High Schools. The Ronald Reagan Symphony Orchestra started the winning streak off with their excellent performance of movements from Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. Over

the following week, the Philharmonia, Sinfonia and Sinfonietta Orchestras gave their Sweepstakes-earning performances of classical and contemporary pieces. In the sight reading room, the students were able to look at a previously unseen pieces of music and perform them expertly after director Sixto Elizondo IV gave a 9-minute musical walk-through, complete with players “shadow bowing,” (moving the bow silently on the forearm to the rhythmic aspects of the music) and light touches on the

fingerboards of the stringed instruments to feel the notes. Congratulations to students and their teacher for a job well-done! Now it’s back to daily rehearsal for two more upcoming concerts: the annual Evening With Strings at the Blossom Athletic Center in April where music of The Beatles will feature prominently, and the final Spring Concert in May. All concerts are free and open to the public.

Reagan Hosts Shattered Dreams Drunk Driving Program Submitted By Laura Breeden eagan High School students witnessed a mock drunk driving crash scene and emergency responders in action on campus Friday, March 6. The Reagan Student Council spent 10 months planning and organizing the dramatic Shattered Dreams program in hopes of educating classmates about the dangers of drinking and driving and distracted driving. During the one-day presentation, junior and senior students witnessed the mock accident and memorial service for the victim complete with emergency personnel protocols, field sobriety test, AirLife, and eulogy for the “departed” student. The leading cause of death and serious injury to teenagers ages 15 to 19 is traffic crashes. Due to inclement weather the competition was cancelled and the Rattlers stayed in town. The girls made the best out of it and spent the day together having fun and

Since the competition was cancelled, the dance teams found themselves with lots of extra tacos. How could they make the most of the situation? Friday Movie Night At Stone Oak Elementary Submitted By Deborah Deel tone Oak Elementary School recently held another Friday Movie Night for students and parents. The movie this time was Lady and the Tramp. To add to the fun Stone Oak declared that Friday as 50’s Day at school. Students and staff were encouraged to don leather jackets, bobby sox, and poodle skirts for the school day and on into the evening. That night students had the opportunity to learn the twist and take pictures in front of 50’s themed backdrops. Pizza, soda, and popcorn were sold by the Stone Oak PTA for the movie goers to enjoy. The Stone Oak Elementary Book Fair also took place at the same time as Movie Night. Librarians and parent volunteers joined in on the 50’s fun, dressing the part and keeping the Book Fair open for “late” night shopping until the movie began. The Book Fair theme “For the Love of Books” extended the Valentine’s Day holiday a little longer for Stone Oak students. Pink and red hearts and streamers adorned the ceiling and doors into the library. The Book Fair also coincided with early release days giving parents the opportunity to shop with their children before heading off to their student-led conferences. As what would hopefully be the last cold front of the season blew in, Stone Oak Elementary students were participating in the NEISD 2015 Stellar Showcase. Joining students from other district elementary schools, Stone oak students converged on the gym ﬂoor at Blossom Athletic

The Showcase allows parents a chance to see what skills their students have been learning this year in Physical Education applied to creative and entertaining routines. April events will include the 3rd Grade Animal Café, Kinder Round Up, 5th Grade Field Trip, 1st Grade Fiesta Parade, and the Bike Rodeo.

down into two categories; Precision and Sporter. Each category fires from three different positions; standing, kneeling, and the prone position. Reagan’s Rattler Battalion entered one Precision team and two Sporter teams to the competition and walked out as the Alamo City Air Rifle Champions in the Sporter category. ear Friends and Residents: Last month, Council reviews recommendations from the Charter Review Commission. As the ﬁrst elected ofﬁcial to call for an election regarding Streetcar and Light Rail, I was delighted to vote “Yes” to put this on the May 9th ballot.

So, on May 9th you will have a chance to vote on Proposition 1 regarding Streetcar and Light Rail. The next proposal was an amendment that would provide the newly elected Mayor earn $61,725/year and City Council $45,722/year. I voted “No” on Council pay

because I believe the number one issue Council should be working on this spring is resolving our police and fire union contracts. As long as we are in union negotiations, our number one priority should be to get a fair and equitable contract that is good for our police and fire personnel and good for the City’s long term finances. I’m glad the city’s current offer met my longstanding requirements. First, a contact that provides better health care benefits for our uniformed personnel and second keeps our total expenses within the 66% cap we agreed on last year. That leaves 34% of the General Budget for streets and drainage, parks and libraries. We do not yet have a handshake deal,

much less a contact to vote on. I think a campaign over Council pay in the middle of our own campaigns would be a signiﬁcant distraction from the effort to get the police and ﬁre union negotiations resolved in a way that is fair and equitable to both sides. That is why I voted “No” to placing council pay on the May ballot. I am always interested in what you have to say. I have a number of poll questions at the District 9 website. Fight Night: Men vs. Women

By Stefanie Young n Saturday, February 28 the Stone Oak Business Association joined forces with Denise Castano Wirth and her group of networkers for a night of Men vs. Women Trivia. The group gathered at Vortex Bar for the faceoff with door prizes galore and the upbeat yet casual atmosphere the Battle of the Sexes insured. While the weather was cold and wet the networkers could not be kept at bay. As each guest walked in they were given a networking bingo card and had a name pinned to their back. The bingo had you asking questions like, “How many siblings do you have?” “I think the bingo was a great way to get to know one another and made it easy to start up a conversation,” raved Brittany Oliver, an admin for SOBA. “I was thrilled with the turn out of the event, considering the weather and the fact that the event was on a Saturday, I don’t think we could have drawn a better crowd,” stated Russell Groomer, the founder and director of the business association. “Denise and the Sassy Moms are an amazing networking

group and we really enjoyed partnering with them for this event. SOBA is looking forward to working with them again.” The event began at 6:30 pm with the trivia running right up to the end. As the evening wound down, everyone turned their attention the numerous televisions for the real ﬁght: Ronda Rousey vs Cat Zingano.

SOBA: Giving Thanks Where Thanks Is Due By Stefanie Young f you’ve attended a Stone Oak Business Association (SOBA) ribbon cutting ceremony, business expo, or Living Through Giving event, you’ve probably ran into J.J. Rodriguez of J.J. Rodriguez Professional Real Estate. He has volunteered his time, expertise, personal sound equipment and much more to the association. It is professionals like J.J. that help make SOBA what it is today. J.J. originally joined SOBA over 10 years ago to help promote his real estate business. His business was already ﬁrmly based in the Stone Oak, Encino Park and North Central areas, but he thought it was necessary to meet business owners and people who lived and worked in the area in order to expand his business and network. As a SOBA member he jumped in whole heartedly to the idea of community building and working as a team to achieve better businesses. He’s always enjoyed meeting

It really is a family event with carnival rides, snow, & Santa himself. The vendors who participate get to meet a ton of people and hopefully make important business contacts,” explained J.J. “This is also where thousands of toys are collected to be distributed later to needy San Antonio children.” Volunteer work is not always easy or fun, but J.J. has managed to keep a smile on his face and the faces around him. “As far as memories, they have all been pretty good. Hardy Oak Sells Healing Hearts Submitted By Heather Kelley he Student Council Lighthouse Team at Hardy Oak Elementary sold hearts for quarters for the Ronald McDonald House Charity February 2nd-13th. The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and wellbeing of children. RMHC believes that when you change a child’s life, you change a family’s, which can change a community and, ultimately, the world. As pioneers of providing family-centered care, RMHC strives to be part of the solution in improving the lives of children and their families, providing programs that strengthen families during difficult times. Hardy Oak Elementary sold 5,952 hearts totaling $1597.00. They are so thankful for everyone who participated! Way to go Hardy Oak!

Submitted By Colleen Churn he Kindergarten students and teachers at Hardy Oak Elementary School were celebrating the 100th day of school. Mrs. Churn’s kinder class had an exciting day filled with fun activities. Every student created a unique t-shirt with a “100” of their own design and were allowed to wear them all day. The students created masks shaped into the number 100 that they were happy to wear around the classroom. The kindergarten class was treated with delicious and healthy snacks from their own making. The students choose from a variety of food choices (10 of

10 different items) to create a bag of 100 treats to eat later in the day for their snack. Mrs. Churn’s class showed off their ability to count to 100 throughout the day with number songs, chants, and games. The students were also very surprised when “Zero The Hero” showed up to count with them!! The hilarious super hero quizzed the class over different ways to count to 100, for example by; 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s. To finish the celebration the kindergarteners had a 100th day parade around the school to show off all of their wonderful and artistic shirts! What a wonderful and fun day the kids had!

Submitted By Velizar Iliev n February 13, Saint Mary’s Hall’s student Robin Cheong won Bronze medal in the Cadet Men’s Epee fencing event and 7th place Finalist medal in the Junior Men’s Epee fencing event at the 2015 Junior Olympics Championships in Richmond, VA. With his performance, Robin is one of not many fencers winning two out of two medals in one competition in US Junior Olympics history. Robin competed against 246 top male epee fencers in the US age 20 and under in Junior’s event and 245 top male epee fencers in the US age 17 and under in

Cadet’s event. Currently, Robin is ranked 4th in Cadet Men’s Epee national points list for ages 17 and under. At the same time Farrah Lee-Elabd unfortunately did not placed at the 2015 Junior Olympics but she had enough points in her portfolio which kept her 2nd in Cadet Women’s epee fencers in the US age 17 and under which qualifies her to represent US at 2015 Cadet & Junior World Championships during April in Uzbekistan. Farrah & Robin train at Olympian Fencing Club in San Antonio, TX with some of the best fencers in the nation. They are coached by Velizar Iliev, US Olympian and 3 times World Champion.

5th Annual Run For The Heights Braves The Winter Weather Submitted By Leigh Ellis he 5th Annual Run for the Heights, 5K Run/Walk, Kids’ Fun Run, & Health Fair, held at Tuscany Heights Elementary, on Saturday, February 28, 2015 proved to be the most challenging event to date. Runners and walkers from all over San Antonio came out to brave the hilly course in the 30 degrees cold, wet, and windy weather. Despite the weather challenges, the community participated in a fun and exciting morning of health and wellness! Overall, the event included over 850 registrations, 40+ business and community partners and 150+ volunteers. Returning emcee, Vinnie Vinzetta, KENS5 Sports Anchor, kicked off the event with the Opening Ceremony performed by the Johnson High School JROTC and Tuscany Heights Tiger Beat Choir singing the National Anthem. First up was the Fun Run as kids of all ages sprinted their way through the ¾ mile course. All Fun Run participants earned a spirit stick for their accomplishment. The chiptimed 5K was next with runners and walkers weaving their way through the challenging and hilly course. Using the latest timing technology, runners were able to view their race results on big screen monitors within minutes of crossing the finish line. The top finishers were Jenny Breuer with a time of 19:50 and Eric Salinas, who finished with a time of 18:26. The top 3 overall males/females received medals and gift certificates. Additional medals and awards went to the top 3 males/females in each 5 year age category, ranging from 10 and under to 70+. Finally, there were special awards for the top girl and boy in grades K-5, which included medals and gift certificates. Congratulations to all the Fun Run and 5K Finishers! After the races, participants warmed up inside by visiting the Sponsor Expo & Health Fair to receive valuable health information, get health screenings, and sample nutritional products. Well done.” Run for the Heights not only raised funds for the Tuscany Heights Elementary PTA, a 501(c) 3, but helped promote health and wellness in the community. Plan Ahead: Planning ahead will give you time to plan out each portion of your child’s school lunches, instead of grabbing whatever you can find on a rushed morning. You never know what might happen in the mornings before school, so planning out lunches the night before, or even having the

entire week planned on Sunday, will take away some morning-rush stress. Take Requests: Do your kids have foods that they particularly enjoy? Give them a chance to choose some options for their fun and healthy lunch. If their choices are not as beneficial as you’d like, find a way to add it in small portion sizes, or look for recipes to increase the health benefits. Make it fun: Whoever says you shouldn’t play with your food, clearly doesn’t know how to pack a fun school lunch! Cutting the fruits and veggies portions into fun shapes will encourage your kids to eat them up. Invest in smaller cookie cutters to cut things

like cantaloupe, watermelon, and bananas into fun shapes. Does your child not like the crust? Cut their sandwich into a fun shape, or decorate it with cheese or veggies on top. Roll up sandwich meat and cheese for a different take on a sandwich. Do Your Research: Be sure to spend some time researching any processed foods you may be adding in to your child’s lunchbox! There may be hidden ingredients that deceive the buyer into believing a food product is healthy, when it really may not be. Look for healthier options when grocery shopping, and try to use fruits and veggies straight out of the fresh produce aisle.
