Life Only Gets Better

M

arch is always a great time of year for me. It’s the birthday month of both of my children. My son, Blake, will be 22 and my daughter, Rashell, will be 18. I am fast approaching the time when I will become an empty nester. It brings a smile when I think of this term because I have always associated this phrase with being old. What’s interesting is that I don’t feel old. I feel better than I have in twenty years. I feel more alive and more aware than I ever have in my life. I wake every morning with a joy for living. With that being said, let me tell you of a couple of events my company is involved with that we would love for you to participate in. On March 27th, we are hosting a seminar with a special guest speaker, Manuel Diotte. Manny is one of the most sought after speakers in his field and is a personal friend of mine. He has agreed to speak at the Drury Plaza North to bring his message of growing your business. Every person I know can use Manny’s positive message for increasing their sales. This is an event you can send your whole sales staff to. You will never have a better opportunity to hear a more dynamic speaker in your lifetime. Look on page 16 for more information on this event. March is also the month for Reagan and Johnson High School students to turn in their essays and applications for the Stone Oak Business Association’s scholarships. We have been so privileged to be able to support our local schools high school seniors each year for the past eleven years by providing scholarships for graduating seniors. Our company has always believed in giving back to the community which supports us.

We are also one of the proud sponsors for Taste of the Northside in April. Every year this event continues to inspire and represent the Northside as one of the best Fiesta events. I love seeing many of my friends and family attend this event and I love being a part of this event since I know it benefits the children from the Brighton School. The Brighton School is an incredible member of our community and provides an invaluable service for these children and their families. Come by our booth and have your photo taken in front of the Welcome Home front cover. As you are going on your Spring Break vacations be sure and share with us your adventures. hh, Spring Break. How do I love thee? Let me count the days… Now, I’m a teacher, and you may think this a disloyal sentiment. After all, it is my calling and I should be only too happy spending my days training, influencing, shaping young minds, being positive, energetic and upbeat, and selflessly giving day after day after…oh, sorry. Um-m, yes, Spring Break. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the kids. I love the kids. (Who called me Pinocchio?!) It’s not the school lunches. (Whoops! It’s growing again!). So why do I count the days until Spring Break arrives? It’s…it’s…O.K! It’s MATH CLASS! (My therapist was right, that DOES feel better. Only 11 steps to go…) Now, you may be thinking “Hello?

It’s not rocket science.” Yeah? Well, let me tell you, pal, it’s not like the old days. Remember when Sally had two apples, Johnny had five apples, how many apples did they have altogether? Just try THIS: Shahirisse had ten apples. She gave 1/3 of them to the animal shelter and of the remaining apples, four were given to Hapejnah, who cut them into thirds, saving 15 seeds for his Arbor Day Civics project, then climbed three flights of stairs with 14 stairs per flight and gave 2/3 of the slices to Su Yong Po who proceeded to eat 3/5, saving the remaining slices for her brother and two sisters who were attending self-awareness training. How many apples do Shahirisse and Hapejnah have left altogether? Huh? Exactly. Not being so judgmental NOW, are we, hmmm? I now separate math questions into a 1-tylenol group, a 2-tylenol group and the “let’s just give ‘em the answers out of the teacher’s manual and make a blood pact of silence” group. Spring Break used to mean beaches and sunshine but now it means a slight reprieve from studying my “Math for Dummies” (beginner version) book. The ability to digitally manipulate and send X-rays means that they can be sent for evaluation almost instantly, speeding up the wait time on patient results. The Ride of A Lifetime

M

aya Angelou once said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” For Manny Diotte, a cancer survivor, speaker, author and coach, he has taken these words to heart and is continually using his experiences and position in life to impact children with The Ferrari Kid experience. The Ferrari Kid experience is designed to give children coping with cancer or other illnesses a break by making them feel like a celebrity for a day. Diotte was inspired to begin the program by his own experiences. At age seven, Diotte was told that he had six months to live due to cancer. After 48 surgeries, three and a half years of going in and out of hospitals and two years of chemotherapy and radiation, he beat some of the toughest odds. Although his cancer was cured, the aftermath of chemotherapy and radiation left him with damage to his body and infections. Once it was decided that his leg would have to be amputated to save his life, he found himself being flown to Los Angeles in 1987 to see if he would be a candidate for a special procedure. After arriving in LA and walking out of the airport, he saw a red Ferrari that caught his eye. The owner let him sit in it and take pictures, a moment he would remember for the rest of his life. “Now that I am older and have been traveling and helping people all over the country, I decided I wanted to help people in my own backyard, which is what sparked the Ferrari Kid, so I can travel less and do something here to better my community and help kids who are suffering,” said Diotte. The Ferrari Kid experience begins by picking up the children at Aldinos in Ferraris and taking them to Main Event Entertainment where they pull up to a red carpet and with “paparazzi” who are there to document their arrival and get their autograph. Each month, about five to eight kids get to take part in this experience and Diotte hopes to give this opportunity to more kids in a few months. This May, the two year anniversary of The Ferrari Kid, children will also have the chance to be taken to and from their treatments in a Ferrari as a way to give a

great experience to more of the children on the waiting list. “I say cancer sucks, but the ride to the hospital doesn’t have to,” commented Diotte. “It just gives them something positive to look forward to on a day that can be very negative and dark.” The month of May has many things in store of The Ferrari Kid. While currently the children are all taken to Main Event, they will soon get a catalog where they can pick an option from three to five “celebrity” experiences. These experiences may range from a spa package to a dinner to a shopping experience. Regardless of where the children go and what they do, they are getting an experience they can truly cherish. “I think the most rewarding thing is that I know I am fulfilling God’s purpose for my life,” Diotte said. “And because I went through the same experience as these kids I am able to connect and speak to them in a way that others might not be able to. And of course, another thing that is the most rewarding is knowing that I took their pain away even for a moment. I think that is rewarding to me to know that they got to be a kid again, because I feel like my childhood was robbed. So they get to be a kid again and laugh and just not think about the pain they are in, even if it’s just for a day.” He went on to say that the experience is more than the flashy cars that they get to ride in. The cars may be what gets people’s attention, but it is what the whole experience leaves these children with and the memories that makes it so special. “It is what I do after when we meet, to encourage their heart and build their self-esteem and to remind them that they were born for greatness,” he explained. “So I tell the kids three things: God heals, miracles happen and dreams really do come true.” Besides Diotte’s dedication to reach out to these children, and Marc Miller, the President of the Ferrari Club who has involved his club members with this program, the Ferrari Kid program is made possible through the generous donations of others. It costs $250 to sponsor a child, giving them a memory they can cherish with their family in such a difficult time. Churchill softball is expecting big things this season with a team chalk-full of experience and depth.

Seniors Swing for the Fences By Ben Spicer sk any coach for almost any sport and they’ll tell you a key ingredient to a successful season is senior leadership. Luckily for Winston Churchill High School softball coach Teresa Machu, this year’s team is loaded with seniors up to the task. The Churchill High School softball team returns 12 lettermen for the 2014 season. Last year, following a slow start in which the team lost 7 of its first 10 games, the team rallied to win 10 out of 12 in district and advance to the first round of the playoffs. Despite a 7-5 loss to San Marcos, there are plenty of reasons for optimism with much of the same team back. With another offseason behind them, the team has begun to focus squarely on returning to the playoffs. “The loss to San Marcos was a tough one last year but in the individual player meetings that were held the week after, each returner was even ‘hungrier’ to get back to work for this season,” Coach Machu said. “The players realized how close they were to winning that first round game and have set goals for this season to be different.” Senior second baseman Rachelle Cavazos, a potential pharmacology major in college, said despite the time off, the team has constantly been practicing. “The Churchill softball team has a summer league that allowed us to keep playing,” Cavazos said. Churchill H.S. softball “Personally I am always practicing as much as I can, including the offseason.” Senior third baseman Brianna Martinez, who intends to major in nursing in college, said her playing career would end after this her senior year. She is motivated to make her final year a lasting one. “Getting to experience how a team works is incredibly memorable,” Martinez said. “You learn of the importance of your teammates.” For many of the girls like Martinez, this season is the last time they will step on the diamond as competitive athletes. A few however, are working hard in this last season to extend their playing career before moving on to the next level.

Senior Aspen Shade, a utility player and first team All-District player last year, is a preferred walk-on at the University of Texas at Austin. Last year she hit .434 and scored 38 runs, a team high. Introduced to the game by her great-grandfather, her goal this year is to have a batting average of .500 and hit her first in-game home run. Shade’s passion and love to play the game is readily apparent. “The game (of softball) is very action-filled I am always on my toes,” Shade said. “I always have something to do. My favorite thing is the fast pace nature of it…there is no time to think, just to react.” Shade and her counterpart in the infield, senior shortstop Lindsay Wideman, strengthen Churchill’s

production of utility player Grace Tritchler. No matter where Grace Tritchler plays, be it first base, catcher or the outfield, her bat is key to the Charger lineup. Last year she led the district in doubles, triples, and batting average at .467. Tritchler for her efforts was named honorable mention All-State, and was first team All-District. Having already been offered spots on college teams from all division levels, Tritchler is expecting big things her senior year. “The hardest part is the mental aspect of sports which comes with experience,” Tritchler said. Churchill also has the added benefit this year of having both of its pitchers return from a year ago. One of those pitchers is 2nd Team All-District Mikaela Elizondo, who had a record of 9-7 last season. She also accumulated a more than respectable 3.24 earned run average with 49 strikeouts in 95 innings pitched. “As a pitcher, I enjoy having control over the tempo of the game,” Elizondo said. “I feel it is a very stressful position, but I enjoy touching the ball every play.” Elizondo, who intends to major in Biology in college, said she enjoys being part of this particular team. “I like to enjoy the memories made with my teammates,” Elizondo said. “My goals for the year are to win district and bounced back in a big way last season to finish second in district and advance to the playoffs. advance past the second round.” Many of these senior girls have interior defense. By Houston Brown, CSCS ften times I am asked how often one should exercise each week. My answer to that question is usually given after I learn a little about your goals, medical history and any physical limitations. I also like to consider the duration and intensity of your workouts. For general health and fitness, two to three days a week for 45 minutes to an hour is beneficial. That’s assuming that you are not affected by any chronic conditions. Now, if your goals are more specific I’ll suggest a greater frequency. Managing the chronic pain and stiffness of arthritis and joint replacements will

require you to exercise more often. Because over stressing the joints can exacerbate the situation and inactivity can lead to dysfunction and stiffness, I encourage these individuals to exercise more regularly (four to five days) with a lower intensity and volume. For the same reasons an increased frequency is needed for other chronic conditions such as COPD, fibromyalgia, and diabetes. For these individuals exercise tolerance is even lower, but yet more essential. So five to seven days a week of light exercise is important. Another common concern is exercising the same muscles on consecutive days. The majority of the time I tell people not to worry

Google Glass, an android powered device mounted onto eyeglass frames, is not actually that new, it went into limited release last year. It’s run by voice commands and by touching the glass device itself. Google glass did have some problems when it first came out. First, it doesn’t have a lot of apps specifically designed for it. Second, most people didn’t like the type of frame it was mounted on. Lastly, at $1500, you had to be really motivated to purchase it. Google recently announced the new Google Glass 2, which is to be released this year. It now has more apps and more applications for its use, including telemedicine. New frame styles and the ability to pair Glass with prescription lenses have made it more useful to more

consumers. Now Google has paired with Vision Service Plan, the country’s biggest vision care company, to offer Google Glass as a benefit on their vision plan. In fact, if you do have some muscle soreness the day after a workout, it’s a good idea to do a light workout on those muscles to increase blood flow to the area to help in recovery. On the other hand, individuals that are breaking down a great amount of muscle tissue such as athletes or body builders will want to skip a day between muscle groups. This is because muscle growth happens with the recovery of the muscle tissue. So in this case, a full recovery may take 48 hours or

more. Most of the time, these individuals will split the workout into movement patterns or muscle groups each day. If you are really serious about weight loss, you might consider this approach because you’ll need an increased intensity, volume and frequency above that of a general health and fitness goal. she said. I understand, I told her, it happened to me too. I told her that I was 65 now and had been helped so much by an antiaging doctor over a decade before and that I had dedicated my practice to helping other women just as I had been helped. We discussed the risks and side effects of hormone therapy in detail. The risk is, of course, breast cancer, uterine, or ovarian-and blood clots to the brain, lung or heart. Unfortunately, one can develop all of these conditions, even without hormone replacement therapy. However, most researchers believe that hormone replacement therapy does increase the risk. Hormone replacement therapy is not for everybody. We must weigh the risk to benefit ratio and, as best as we can, manage the risk and proceed if the benefit is substantial enough. My patient’s blood work revealed

menopausal levels-nearly absent, in other words, of progesterone, estradiol and testosterone. Interestingly, she also had extremely low levels of vitamin B12 which can also lead to neuropsychiatric or hematologic abnormalities in 10 percent of people! Her vitamin D was also very low, as it is in most people, I told her. Low vitamin D in some studies is believed to be a risk factor for cancer! Vitamins, fish oil, exercise, and vaginal application of hormones to speed her healing completed her focused therapy. Not yourself? It does not have to be that way. HOPE Holds Khaki And Plaid Gala Submitted By Jennifer Starr or its fifth year, Hope for the Future (HOPE), recently hosted the premiere Catholic event for San Antonio, the Khaki and Plaid Gala. The event benefits the HOPE Tuition Assistance Program and the 43 Catholic schools of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. With anticipation and participation for the event growing each year, this year’s had a record 1,100 guests come out in support of Catholic education. Co-chairs for the event were Dr. Paul and Becky Saenz, both graduates of area Catholic schools that have also sent their three sons to Catholic school. Dr. Saenz, the team physician for the San Antonio Spurs,

and his wife Becky, brought in tremendous support on behalf of the event, which raised $500,000 and will help more than 400 students receive financial help through HOPE. A highlight of the event is the tremendous live auction with items generously donated to the gala. A special item this year was five gourmet cakes, which were auctioned to the table with the highest bid. Several priests from the Archdiocese and Archbishop Gustavo delivered the cakes to the tables and helped to serve the guests. In total, the cakes raised $4,000. Rounding off a tremendous evening was the raffle of the 2014 Toyota Corolla donated by the Kahlig Auto Group. KABB Fox Anchor Michael Valdes won the

MacArthur Project Graduation 2014

Submitted By Albert Vasquez o you remember high school graduation day? It is a day filled with happiness, a sense of accomplishment and anticipation of the future. At MacArthur High School, parent volunteers are organizing a special event called Project Graduation, which is held the evening of high school graduation. Project Graduation is an all-night celebration filled with fun, food, games and activities in a safe, alcohol and drug-free environment. The event will be held this year on June 8 at The Main Event on 281 and 1604. Students are bused to the event site

from Mac Arthur immediately following the graduation ceremony. Students must remain in the facility until the next morning. Project Graduation is organized by senior parent volunteers who have worked throughout the year planning and raising funds. Monetary contributions help offset the student fee for Project Graduation so that every graduating senior at MacArthur is able to attend for a minimal cost. The funds for Project Graduation are raised in a variety of ways and this year their primary fundraiser will be a “Staking of Teachers.” This will be something the students will participate in to sell paint stakes decorated by them and sold to friends,

neighbors and relatives. Students are to be involved in the fundraising. The MacArthur PTA is asking everyone to consider making a monetary donation to Project Graduation. For a $300 tax deductible donation received by March, your company’s name or family name will be featured on the back of the official MAC Project Graduation t-shirt along with a “Thanks to …” notification in our school newsletter which is distributed to the parents of 3,000 students.
