Note From The Publisher
Mother’s Day
D
ear Neighbors, May is the month of my favorite holiday, Mother’s Day. I have always been a Mama’s boy and love my Mother dearly. My life has been so blessed by the relationship I have with her because she has always been there for me, to share my thoughts, my hopes and dreams. My favorite thing to do with my Mom is to go to Spurs games. She is a Spurs fanatic and we always have the best time! The laughter, cheering and excitement are the memories that I will cherish forever. On pages 22 and 23 are letters that will make you smile and cry as these children express their love for their mothers. As I write this letter, I am faced with the decision to let my dog go to her final rest. Sasha, has been with me for 11 years and is a part of my family. This decision is one of the hardest I have had to face in this lifetime. Knowing that this is the right thing to do doesn’t make it any easier. Sasha will be greatly missed by the Welcome Home staff. She has left her mark on my family, and I couldn’t have asked for a better companion and friend. I was blessed with 11 years with her and nothing ever prepares you for this decision. Rest in Peace, Sasha. With the loss of a loved one I would like to remind our readers that May is a month of remembrance as we approach Memorial Day on the 25th. I am always grateful to live in Military City, USA on this holiday. The people of San Antonio have a deep reverence and appreciation for the sacrifices of our military men and women and their families. May we never take for granted the high cost at which our American liberties are earned. On May 2nd the Stone Oak Business
Association will have their annual Spring Business Expo. This event is open to the community at Mays YMCA. Many local businesses will be there for you to visit and learn more about. The Stone Oak Business Association tries to have a couple of these expos a year to bring your local businesses to the community. Please stop by and give them your support as we enjoy the festivities at Mays YMCA. I have always been a community person and do everything I can to promote community businesses. I want to bring attention to two locally owned family businesses, Trilogy Pizza and Jets Pizza. While these two restaurants are both famous for their pizza, they each bring a special element to the community. For many in our community, this month is also a transitional time of year. With school wrapping up and summer right around the corner, teachers and families are celebrating the end of classes and looking forward to summertime activities. For graduating seniors who are coming to the end of their high school careers, this transition may be the greatest they have ever faced. The Stone Oak Business Association once again had the privilege of granting scholarships to five seniors from local high schools, which will be announced this month. The many scholarship applications confirmed what we already knew – the Class of 2015 is full of bright young leaders who are full of potential. I look forward to seeing the positive impact they will make on the world in the coming years.

On The Cover By Stefanie Young eing a mom is demanding and a tough job. There aren’t any sick days or vacation time and definitely no overtime pay. Moms pour their heart and soul into the wellbeing and happiness of their children. Welcome Home would like to take a moment to say thank you to all the hardworking mothers in our community. Whether you’re a new mother, grandmother or someone who stepped in to fill the position, your job is never ending and at times, thankless. It’s unfortunate that there is only one day out of the year that we focus on mothers (and fathers) when they work so hard to teach, listen, keep patience and provide. The students that we hear about or write about wouldn’t be where they are without a push in the right direction, discipline, support and the love they find at home. Thank you for all that you do and know

t’s almost Mother’s Day, that wonderful day when (in theory) accolades abound and every mother is “Queen For A Day”. So after cleaning the royal toilet and feeding the royal hound (the “prince” forgot again) I am ready for some pampering. My family places me in my pumpkin carriage (it’s really a Ford Explorer but DOES have a small bite of pumpkin pie squished into the seat), and it’s off to Taco Bell for the royal feast. (What? No sour cream?! OFF with their heads!) Along the way, I have occasion to reflect on this journey called Motherhood. Amazed at how much I have learned over the years, when I was but a Commoner, it is hard to narrow down the really important lessons, but a few come to mind. Some of these lessons were gleaned from simple observation. For example, the main reason

why God chose women to have babies---men are just too fragile! While they do take the brunt of the heavy lifting, war fighting, tire changing, etc., once they see childbirth (akin to pushing a watermelon through a garden hose), they seem perfectly satisfied with their “microscopic” contribution. Some lessons came in the form of “expert” advice (which apparently includes everyone who has ever seen a real baby at least once). For instance, this advice from “Instructions for breastfeeding: If your (hmm-hmms) become sore, encourage your baby to latch on as often as possible to toughen them up.” What are they—leather!? Who came up with THAT, Al Qaidda? By far, though, the most precious things I have learned came from my children. Here is a sampling: “Dogs are naked!” “The guy who catches the ball at a baseball game is the “glover”, “Do you, Ken, take Barbie to be your awful wedding wife?”, “The tooth fairy takes the teeth to heaven so God can recycle them”, and of course when a mommy forgets to send something for show-n-tell, the kindergartener will frantically rummage through his karate bag and show-n-tell his “protector cup thingy,” causing a flurry of laughter in the teacher’s lounge and at least one phone call from a participating female student’s mother... Mostly I know I have survived this wonderful journey so far, by hugging, listening, setting boundaries and sticking to them and, above all, a lot of praying. When God is in control, fear not! The monarchy is in Good Hands. Debby Seguin (warning: she can be grumpy in the morning!) can be reached at Deborah.seguin@comalisd.org

Got Your Back 2015 By Stefanie Young o many children in Bexar County will begin the school after the summer without a backpack. At Living Through Giving [LTG], they feel that shouldn’t be the case and have begun their annual event, “Got Your Back”. After collecting more than 800 backpacks during the 2014 backpack drive, LTG has started collecting backpacks with participating schools and businesses. LTG will aim to break that record and collect new and slightly used backpacks to give to needy children for the upcoming school year. The purpose of the drive is to help children begin the year with the tools necessary to succeed. “Being able to see the children’s faces light up while going through the backpacks, is such an emotional sight,” Russell Groomer, Living Through Giving founder
S
and owner of Welcome Home Community Newspaper said. “Living Through Giving strives to make an impact in these children’s lives as best as we possibly can.” Living Through Giving will be accepting backpacks or cash donations that will be used to purchase school supplies and other needs for children in the San Antonio area. If you, your business or school would like to join them in their cause, or if you have any questions, contact them at 210-3848233.

This year, they have teamed up with The Big Give S.A and hope to kick off their fundraising year with bang! With hundreds of local nonprofits represented over a dozen counties, there is certainly a cause to fit your passion. While we hope you will keep Living Through Giving in mind, helping the community in general always results in a better living standard for those who may have less. “The purpose of this community-wide giving challenge is to increase public awareness of the impact local nonprofits make in addressing our community’s social challenges, bring nonprofits and donors together, expand the idea of online giving, connect people to the causes that move them the most and, of course, make giving FUN,” States The Big Give S.A.’s Site. “By turning giving into a shared region-wide experience, we can significantly impact the future of South Central Texas and make a huge collective difference. Last year’s event raised over $2,000,000 for 467 participating agencies!” How does a charity participate? Any 501(c)(3) organization in Atacosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, or Wilson county is welcome to participate
L
in The Big Give S.A. Nonprofit registration closes April 10, 2015. There is no fee to participate. An eligible organization will have one profile on The Big Give S.A. site. While the organizational description can include all of the agency’s programs and services, donors cannot designate or restrict their donations to a particular program. Each participating nonprofit is eligible for matching funds and prize incentives. If you missed the chance to sign up this year, please mark your calendars for 2016! How do individuals participate? On May 5, anyone can make an online gift to a participating organization. All donations on May 5 give your favorite nonprofit the opportunity to earn matching funds and prize incentives. This means that your gift has the capacity to leverage additional funding. You can give by smart phone, tablet, or computer. Minimum donation is $10. There is not a maximum donation. Living Through Giving hopes to hear from you on May 5th and hopes you will visit the local schools for their “Got Your Back” backpack drive! Emotional Outbursts May Be A Sign Of Estrogen Dominance
sedation, while the right amount is calming. Progesterone decreases proliferation of the cells in the milk ducts by 400%. (Fertility Sterility 1995; 63:785-91) Progesterone protects against hyperproliferation in the uterus as well as the breast. Yet, most menopausal women are prescribed only a synthetic estrogen without the balancer, progesterone. Progestin is not progesterone. The synthetic progestin has effects very different from the bio-identical progesterone. Progestin side effects may include depression, breast swelling, weight gain, water retention, and in some studies, increased risk of breast cancer. The mom described above had a high
level of estrogen, practically no progesterone, and very little testosterone. I discussed in detail with her the side effects of hormone replacement therapy, history, physical, and reviewed three pages of her labs. Women’s hormone replacement must be precisely prescribed based on laboratory analysis. Hormone replacement should not be prescribed according to age adjusted normal. Rather, hormones should be prescribed according to the levels of a young adult. I suggested progesterone capsule at night to balance her estrogen dominance and a precise amount of testosterone cream applied intravaginally. Later, she told me, “I feel like myself, again!” Donna Becker, D.O., Board Certified in Emergency Medicine. Enhancement of Life is located at 14603 Huebner Rd., Suite 2601, San Antonio, TX 78231. Summer In Stone Oak
Ortho-k is the process of using special contact lenses that are only worn at night while you sleep. Similar to how a retainer works on your teeth, the molding lenses gently reshape the front surface of your eye while you sleep and when you wake up and remove the contact lens, your vision is clear throughout the day. Because children are not candidates for LASIK, it is a great option for them. Speaking of LASIK, summer is a great time to consider refractive surgery. Having clear vision without using any devices is a great option for adults whose eyes are no longer changing. We co-manage refractive surgery at our office and can determine which procedure would be best for you. At Stone Oak Vision Source, we accept
most insurance plans. We will go over all your options and together we will determine what is best for you as an individual. We also treat eye emergencies such as pink eye and foreign bodies, so be sure to call and we will get you in if the need ever arises. We have three doctors to serve you and are located at 19202 Stone Oak Parkway Ste 106. Visit us online at www.visionsourcestoneoak.com or call for an appointment at 210-495-9020. Drs. I hurt very little but I looked like a chipmunk and my breath was not pleasant to anyone in close proximity to me. With the summer approaching it is a good time to have wisdom teeth removed
if needed because the appointment can be scheduled more easily around school, vacations, and summer activities. Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed; if the teeth are healthy, positioned correctly, and able to be cleaned adequately then you do not need to remove them. Why should you have your wisdom teeth removed? When there is not enough room for the extra set of teeth, current or potential damage to nearby teeth, gum disease, pain, repeated infection of the tissue around the wisdom tooth, tooth decay, growing in

Vineyard Ranch Elementary Curriculum Night
Submitted By Amy Dresch n April 7th, Vineyard Ranch Elementary teachers and staff hosted their third annual Curriculum Night. The goal of Curriculum Night was to bring the community together for food, fun and the sharing of various curriculum related activities. To kick off the event, food trucks from Cheesy Jane’s, KHill BBQ and Kona Ice were available for families to gather together. Grade level teachers prepared enriched and fun activities for both parents and students. Kindergarten teachers worked with students planting seeds for spring. First grade parents were invited to a Reading Restaurant where first graders showed off their reading skills. Being a green campus, all second graders presented their recycling research projects for everyone. In the third grade hallway, teachers assisted students in creating their own flubber science experiment which focused on states of matter. Fourth grade teachers integrated

technology by creating multiple reading and writing activities where students used QR codes throughout. Fifth grade teachers also invited students to master the concept of density by having students create a device that flinked (neither floated nor sank). There was a high Bronco turnout where learning and fun was had by all!

Shrimp Is The Fruit Of The Sea By Rick Groomer Groomer’s Seafood (210)377-0951 ave you tried Groomer’s Seafood’s Fresh, Natural Shrimp?? In the classic film Forrest Gump, the character Bubba gives the famous line that Shrimp is the “Fruit of the Sea.” I have to agree with this, but these days there are so many different kinds of fruit. There are organically grown fruits that are delicious, natural and full of nutrients and then there are non-organic fruits that are genetically modified and stripped of their natural nutrients. Shrimp faces a similar distinction. Groomer’s Fresh Gulf Shrimp is done exactly the way nature intended, right off the boat with no chemicals whatsoever. All that’s used to keep them fresh is some ice and refrigeration and for this reason we only bring them in on the weekends so nothing goes to waste.
H
The other kinds of shrimp you may find at the supermarket do not boast this same claim. These shrimp, once caught are dipped in sodium sulfite or another preservative. Preservatives inhibit the growth of harmful microorganisms and slow the spoiling of foods, so they look fresh for a longer period time and they help prevent oxidation-- a chemical process that spoils food. Sodium bisulfite blocks an enzyme in shrimp that causes melanosis, also called black spot or black bands -- a darkening of pigments in the membranes and meat under the shell that makes the product appear unappetizing. Shrimpers dip baskets of shrimp after they are caught into a solution of sodium bisulfite to maintain a healthy appearance, but while this helps looks it does nothing health and flavor wise. The dip affects the health benefits of the shrimp by stripping it of B-1 vitamins, and also hurts the natural, delicious shrimp flavor. Not exactly the image you may have in mind when you see

(l to r): NewNew(Yingge) Cheng, Liam Crumm, Nicholas Steitz, Drew Neely.
Submitted By Yangki Wojcik huge shout out goes to this special group of young men for their brilliance, dedication, loyalty, and commitment to the Ronald Reagan High School Mathematics and Calculator Applications teams. These young men are NewNew Cheng, Liam Crumm, Nicholas Steitz, and Drew Neely. They have been practicing their brilliance and passion in mathematics during their lunches and after school religiously. The Mathematics test consists of 60 multiple choice questions with a time limit of 40 minutes designed to test contestants’ in-depth knowledge and their natural aptitude in mathematics. The Calculator Applications test consists of 70 questions with a time limit of 30 minutes designed to test contestants’ speed in number crunching and stated real world situation problems from engineering and physics to complicated geometry. NewNew Cheng, a graduating senior who is also a National Merit Finalist, has been a key member of our Mathematics and Calculator Applications teams since his freshman year and has qualified to compete at the district and regional levels. His records are 1st place in Calculator Apps in 2014 and 2015, 3rd place in Mathematics in 2014 and 1st place in Mathematics in 2015 at the district level. When he is not taking tests or studying for UIL, NewNew competes in rigorous and reputable piano competitions on weekends. He is also the first chair cellist in the sweepstakes winning top orchestra of Ronald Reagan High School. Liam Crumm, a graduating senior who is also a National Merit Commended Scholar, has been a key member of the Mathematics, Calculator Applications, Number Sense, and Computer Science teams since his
sophomore year. Liam has a clear life goal of being a computer programmer and will achieve it by majoring in Computer Science. Liam’s records are 3rd place in Computer Science in 2014, 3rd place in Calculator Applications in 2014 and 2015, and 3rd place in Number Sense in 2015 at the district level. Nicholas Steitz, a graduating senior, moved to Reagan in the middle of his sophomore year from overseas because of his father’s profession. This young man’s talent in mathematics and science stood out and he was scouted by Mrs. Wojcik last year. Since then, his contributions to the Mathematics, Calculator Applications, Number Sense, and Science teams have been immeasurable! Not to our surprise, he placed 1st individually in Science in NEISD. Drew Neely, only a sophomore, has equally displayed his superb maturity, brilliance, and work ethic! His records are 2nd place in Mathematics and Calculator Applications, and 3rd place in Computer Science at the district level this year. All of these four young men have placed in the top 5 individuals and have won first place in sweepstakes at every meet they competed throughout this school year thus advancing to regionals in their respective events. In addition to competing in numerous competitions throughout the year, these outstanding students have been teaching underclassmen in an effort to make the teams the strongest in our district and beyond. Thanks to their hard work and dedication, we now have the strongest Mathematics and Calculator Applications teams in the district. We wish NewNew, Liam, and Nicholas the best of luck with their future endeavors at college! We are so lucky that Drew has two more years with us and are looking forward to enjoy his success!

Q: Why should a wooden deck be sealed? A: Different woods have different chemistry. Treated Yellow Pine is a water base wood. When it becomes wet, it expands and when it dries, it shrinks. A 10 lb. board shrinks to 7 lbs. This constant movement with weather will cause treated yellow pine to warp, split, and crack. To stop expansion and contraction it has to be sealed with an oil base penetrating sealer designed to look for dry cell structure allowing the sealer to move through the wood. Cedar and redwood are oil base woods. In time the oil will evaporate, allowing the wood to rot. These woods rot from the bottom up. So when sealing cedar and redwood, you need a sealer that can follow dry cell structure, allowing the sealer to move to the bottom of the deck. Q: Why seal limestone, flagstone, and rocks? A: These surfaces are porous and allow deep penetration for water, as water temperature moves the direction toward freezing that water expands. When temperatures of rock moves in the direction

toward freezing, the rock contracts. So as temperatures change through out the day, the water and rock move in opposite directions, this causes cracking and flaking. Q: Why should pebblestone be sealed? A: We seal pebblestone for two reasons. 1. To protect the surface, keeping the rock from popping out. 2. For an enhanced look. The construction of pebblestone leaves a concrete film on the rocks. Acid washing the rock will remove this concrete film. Sealing the stone with acrylic will give a permanent wet look. Q: Why seal a wooden fence? A: Wooden fence deteriorates quickly for a number of reasons. 1. The bottom of the board acts like a straw, sucking the water into the board. 2. The boards are thin allowing moisture penetration from all six sides. 3. The wood has tannic acid and when the acid comes to the surface and the sun shines on the board turning the tannic acid gray or black. Sealing a fence can eventually double it’s life. Q: Why is my paint growing mold? A: The paint does not have enough mildewcide in it. Always add mildewcide to all exterior paints at the paint store. This stops mold from growing on the painted surface.

Rehearsing For Retirement
T
By Eric Zeitler Client Centric (210) 807-7599
ry living as a “retiree” for a month or two before you commit to leaving your career. Imagine if you could preview your retirement in advance. In a sense, you can. Financially and mentally, you can “rehearse” for the third act of your life while still enjoying the second. Pretend you are retired for a month or two. Take two steps to act out your rehearsal – one having to do with your budget, the other with your expectations.
Draw up a retirement budget & live on it for one, two or three months. Make a list of essential expenses (groceries, gas, utilities, etc.), and then a list of discretionary expenses (movie tickets, dinners out, etc.). This may reveal that you can live handily on less than what you currently spend each month.1 Next, list your income sources for retirement. (Social Security, IRA, pension, dividends, investment income, other revenue streams.) Check with a financial
professional to determine a withdrawal rate off your investment accounts that you can safely maintain through your retirement.2 Try living off of that monthly income for a month or more while you are still working. See how it feels to retire. Arrange some “previews” of your retirement lifestyle. Your “rehearsal” need not be last-minute. If you think you will retire at 65, you could try doing this at 63 or 60 or even before then. Rehearsing for retirement can be very insightful. Some new retirees leave work abruptly only to have their financial and lifestyle assumptions jarred. As you want to make a smooth retirement transition to a future that corresponds to your expectations, test-driving your retirement before it begins is only wise. Girl Scout Teen Dunk Party Submitted By Risa Weinberger he Bush Lopez Service Unit will host an end of the year swim party for Girl Scouts graduating 5th grade thru high school (Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors) on Friday, May 29th, 8:00 – 11:00pm at the Stone Mountain Clubhouse pool, 919 Amber Stone Drive. According to Beth Beaty, Bush Lopez Service Unit Director, “This will be an end of the school year gathering for the “older girls” in Girl Scouts and a kick-off for programs they would like to plan for the next school year.” The cost for the girls to attend is a snack food to share with the group. The service unit will provide drinks and hot dogs. The “older girls” in the Bush Lopez Service Unit have been meeting as a social and service group for five years. When the group first formed, they named themselves TAGS – Teen Association of Girl Scouts. The TAGS group meets once a month for a meeting or a planned activity. For many older Girl Scouts, this is the way that they can stay active in the organization and still be involved in school activities, extracurricular activities, and school work. Some of the activities the TAGS group has planned for themselves in the past include a Monster Bash Halloween party, the San Antonio Ghost Tour, TAGS December Holidays party, Mother Daughter Mystery Dinner Theatre, and trips to the Ronald McDonald House.

It is not unusual for the TAGS girls to be asked to assist with service unit programs such as Thinking Day and the Father Daughter Gala, help with younger troops, and help plan the annual service unit camping event. All the girls who volunteer to assist with programs receive volunteer hours. There are many clubs and organizations in middle school and high school that require outside community service. Submitted By Colleen Douglas e are almost at the end of another successful year at Reagan High School! This year’s PTA has been very busy with many projects that benefit our students and staff. At our April meeting, we awarded scholarships to some very deserving graduating seniors. Scholarship recipients are picked for their leadership, citizenship, volunteer efforts and extracurricular activities. Also at our April meeting, Assistant Principal Glenn Macleay spoke about the ongoing construction at Reagan and about school safety. On April 8, we welcomed incoming Freshman parents to an orientation and tour of the school. Freshman and their parents will have another opportunity to tour the school and meet teachers in August during the first month of classes. Also at our April meeting, we awarded a Remarkable Rattler award to Jill Metcalf. Mrs. Metcalf was nominating by Coach Wetzel and Mrs. Shana Wetzel for her tremendous support of the athletic programs at Reagan. Earlier this year we awarded Remarkable Rattler awards to Coaches Jennifer & Troy McHugh, Jill Smith, and Levi Talamas. Each of these individuals has gone above and beyond to support our Reagan Rattlers. On May 6 our Sister School committee will be serving lunch to the hard working staff at Garner Middle School. Reagan and Garner are partners in the sister school program; each school supports the other with projects to support students, teachers and staff. Submitted By Lisa Ray ardy Oak hosted an event for heroes in the community to come to the school and speak about how fitness and health plays a pivotal role in their lives, as well as, their jobs. Police officers, fire fighters, and military personnel were invited to inspire students to live a healthy life and maintain fitness. Fire fighter, William Bullock, gave a wonderful presentation on the importance of staying healthy and fit. He showed the students the uniform and equipment that fire fighters need to wear and carry around to be successful at their jobs. He spoke about how heavy the equipment is and how fire fighters have to be strong and fit to carry it. He talked about how important it is to eat a healthy, balanced diet and to have many colors on your plate. Other speakers talked to the students about the physical training they had to go through for their jobs, and how it is not only important for them to stay healthy for their career, but also for their family. The students of Hardy Oak Elementary were so inspired by these heroes to work hard to stay healthy and fit, and to inspire others to do the same.

Lopez Drama Spring Play Submitted By Christi Eanes opez Drama will present their spring play Game of Tiara’s by Don Zolidis on Thursday May 14 at 4:00 & 6:30pm in the Lopez cafetorium. Tickets will be on sale during all lunches the week of the show and at the door. All tickets are $4. Lopez theatre students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade auditioned on March 19 & 20 for the show and the cast and crew has been hard at work since rehearsals began on March 23. This play is a combination of Game of Thrones, Shakespeare’s tragedy King Lear and Disney princesses. Imagine Cinderella, Belle and Ellie the Snow Queen (not to be confused with a copyrighted character from a recent Disney film) as sisters all battling for their father’s kingdom. “When the aging king of a Magical Kingdom (England) decides to split his empire between his three daughters, Cinderella (Neely Kasanoff), Belle (Kersee Robbins), and Ellie the Snow Queen
L
(who in no way resembles a copyrighted character) played by Lexie Wilder, terrible tragedy ensues. Terrible, hilarious tragedy. Combining the gut-wrenching plot twists of Game of Thrones and the soul-numbing despair of Shakespearean tragedy, this adaptation of King Lear will leave you dying with laughter as the body count mounts. When you play the Game of Tiaras, you win or you die.” While the show is certainly a ridiculous comedy, with apologies to Shakespeare, it may not be suitable for young children who may be traumatized by the death of their favorite princess. Much like the play Hamlet, only one character is left standing at the end of the show. All action is silly and stylized and the cast & crew have had fun building each scene to its full comic potential. Join Lopez Drama in the cafetorium for Game of Tiara’s on Thursday, May 14 at 4:00 or 6:30pm. The Game is on!!!!!!

Submitted By Lisa Ray his week Hardy Oak Second Graders went on a Texas pioneer adventure to Mill Spring Cabin, at Bradley Middle School. Some of the exhibits included a one-room school house, general store, artifacts museum, cabin, tipi, and covered wagon. The Mill Springs Cabin has hosted more than 50,000 elementary students and thousands of other Texans in the last 15 years. The Cabin’s history program is the only one of its kind in the state, and has touched the lives of more than 50 thousands students. Submitted By Stephanie Fincke he 2015 Fincke Cup Soccer clinic held by Ian’s Foundation and the Mays YMCA on March 29th was an amazing success. Over 100 local youth participants and over 50 high school and adult volunteers turned out to support Ian’s Foundation. All were treated to a special guest appearance by Adrian Cann, a defender for the San Antonio Scorpions. The proceeds from the clinic support Ian’s Foundation and annual Fincke Cup sportsmanship scholarships awarded to players from Johnson High School and Reagan High School. Ian’s Foundation was formed in memory of former RHS and JHS student, Ian Fincke, who passed away in 2008 at the age of 16 from a traumatic brain injury. here has been such unusual weather across the country lately, and San Antonio was no exception. While we’ve probably enjoyed the slow start to summer, the heat is coming fast! Because of the extreme heat we have here it is important to take extra precautions with your vehicle. While there are a number of systems affected by the heat on your vehicle, this month we are focusing on four specific concerns. 1. Keep your engine cool: Make sure the cooling system is serviced as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Between flushes, make sure the coolant is filled to the proper levels by checking the overflow reservoir. Inspect hoses and drive belts for cracking, soft spots or other signs of poor condition. Worn parts are more susceptible to failure in hot conditions and should be replaced. 2. Stay Cool: Exceptionally high temperatures can cause an uncomfortable ride. So take the time to get your vehicles air conditioning system serviced. Make sure it’s operating at maximum efficiency. Let’s face it, we all know the only thing worse than the Texas heat is getting into a car that’s been sitting in the Texas sun all day! 3. Avoid excessive heat where the rubber meets the road: Driving on underinflated tires can affect the handling and braking of a vehicle, but it also can cause
www.welcomehomesa.com
tires to overheat and increase the likelihood of a blowout. This problem becomes even more of a concern when road temperatures are extremely high. 4. Have Your Battery Tested: High temperatures can make the battery fluid evaporate, which damages the interior of the battery, and drastically shortens the life of the unit! Also, the high temperatures can encourage corrosion and deterioration. Batteries should be tested to ensure that they are charging at the correct rate, that the battery fluid is topped off, and that they are clear of any corrosion. 5th Annual Art In The Dark Submitted By Nancy Lipton lind and low vision children should have the same expectations for a fulfilled life as those with sight. Although visually impaired children and those with sight have similar hopes and dreams, the prospects by many children with vision loss are different than those that have no disabilities. All of the proceeds from Art in the Dark will benefit the San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind (SALB) - Blind Children’s Programs. One of SALB newest programs will serve San Antonio’s blind/legally blind children, aged birth through fourteen, as well as support groups for the entire family. Since the inception this program has served over 500 blind/legally blind children of San Antonio. The Blind Children’s Education Program will include Braille training, computer assistive technology skills, mobility training and everyday activities and assistance with daily life skills…..preparing these children for mainstreaming into the public school system. This year the Presenting Sponsor - The Do Seum – the new children’s museum, has generously donated the museum for this most unique evening and Art in the Dark will be their very first external event. Art in the Dark is an evening to remember, as the “touch”…the “feel”…the “sense” of art is explored. Some of the most distinguished local artists have donated their art to Art in the Dark - they are draped and the artist will discuss the piece and show other works they have designed – you can ask questions and touch the art – but NO peeking…..purchasing art as a blind person would. Enjoy appetizers/desserts from 31 area restaurants and caterers - Alberico Fine Wine Restaurant, Aloha Kitchen, Auntie Anne’s Pretzels & Cinnabon, Aurelia’s Chorizo,

For over 81 years the San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind (SALB) has been San Antonio’s icon for training and educating both the blind and severely vision impaired, in addition to being a leader in manufacturing for the military and government agencies. While the products and manufacturing jobs may have changed over time, the SALB’s focus on providing opportunities for people who are blind has remained steadfast….never losing sight of its mission – Independent and high-quality lives for people who are blind and severely vision impaired. 5th Annual Art in the Dark – Benefiting the San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind – Blind Children’s Programs. Dear Mom, I love my mom because she says yes to everything. I ask if we can have a playdate. Her answer is usually yes. I ask for a pet. She got me a fish. And my favorite thing is when I ask for a hug. And I get a hug. My mom helps me understand things like multiplying and adding 754 and 300. If it weren’t for my mommy, I would never go to a great school. My mommy comes to my bed at night and kisses my goodnight. I need to serve her too, so I come to her room when she is tired and kiss her goodnight. My mommy makes sure I have the right amount of breakfast, dinner, and lunch. She is the best mom I could have. She helps me with homework, makes sure I’m healthy, and makes the best French toast! I don’t think I could have a better mom!

Dear Mom, My mom is special because she has a big heart and she cares for me. She also makes me very happy when she makes me good food. She is nice, sweet and pretty. She accepts me for who I am and she helps me out with my homework and questions I do not know. She also lets me go places with my friends. She lets me go to my friends’ parties and sleepovers. She is nice enough to let me have a guinea pig and pay for his food and bedding. My mom also is nice to pack my lunches and snacks. I love my mom very much.

Stone Oak Elementary Third Grade Hosts Animal Café Submitted By Deborah Deel onday, April 6th dawned early for Stone Oak Elementary third graders as they delivered their animals and dioramas for the annual Animal Cafe. In the weeks leading up to the Animal Cafe the students learned all about research. They then used the new skills to research their animal and put together a PowerPoint slideshow presentation for their parents. They were also tasked with creating a life sized animal, a diorama depicting the animal in its natural habitat, or a can animal. Throughout the week each class hosted their Animal Cafe where parents were invited to see the presentation, visit the museum on stage with all the animals and dioramas, and then have lunch with their child. The stage was decorated to represent the different habitats the animals lived in. Colorful birds flapped in the rain forest while roadrunners scurried through the sand, rattle snakes rattled on the desert floor, monkeys and lemurs avoided the big cats, and eels swam in the watering holes. The students worked hard on the project and the displays were amazing. The month of May will start at Stone Oak Elementary with STAAR testing finished for the year. First grade will have their Reading Restaurant May 5th. It will also be a busy month for field trips with the fourth grade class visiting the Mill Springs Cabin at Bradley Middle School on May 12th and third grade having their make-up field trip to the Botanical Gardens May 28th. Reagan Band Encourages You To “Perc Up” This Summer!
Reagan Band students really enjoy showing the elementary school kids what they might experience when they reach high school.
Submitted By Deborah Stine f you haven’t been around the Reagan band hall lately, you might think most of their activities end with football and marching season. In fact, as that season draws to a close, Solo and Ensemble, Concert Bands and recordings for competitions are what keep Reagan Band students sharp during the spring semester. Did you know that the Ronald Reagan High School percussionists and spirit groups perform for local elementary school pep rallies and other community events throughout the year? Reagan Band students really enjoy showing the elementary school kids what they might experience when they reach high school. There are always lots of

excited faces, dancing, and clapping to the beat during these performances. There is a large variety of instruments that each Reagan percussion student has the opportunity to explore and experience during the school year and this semester was no exception. Reagan percussion students have the opportunity to learn and participate in a great variety of ensemble activities. One in particular is special to Reagan High School - the Reagan Steel Band. This ensemble plays a combination of different-sized Steel Pans along with Drum Set. You might have seen the Reagan Steel Band performing outside of the new HEB on Wilderness Oak in December. There are plans underway to expand these public

It is certainly clear that Reagan percussion students are passionate about their craft and enjoy sharing their knowledge and experience with others. To that end, a newly expanded “Perc Up” percussion camp is coming this June. The camp in June will run for four days with sessions for K – 5th grade students and 6 – 8th grade students. Beginners will learn Drumline, Orchestral and World percussion skills with the more advanced players developing their technique on a wide variety of instruments. This will include experience playing on the Reagan steel drums as well! All students will have the opportunity to
participate in a show-off performance on the last day of camp showcasing what they have learned. In addition to the amazing Reagan percussion students, there will be expert adult faculty training the campers in all things percussion. The students and faculty are very excited about this new format and pleased to be able to offer these camps to the community. There is simply nothing that can compare to hands-on exploration when it comes to percussion. This year’s camp will be held at the Ronald Reagan High School Band Hall June 8 – 11. Registration is open to the community. For additional information visit www.ReaganBand.com or email: PercUpRRHS@gmail.com.

ost individuals wake up, head to work, handle the stresses of their work-load, come home, handle family and home life while juggling bills, managing free time, and trying to get enough sleep before doing it again the next day. It can start to weigh on the mind and body consciously and unconsciously. Stress not only weakens the immune system, it can start to affect your mindset, making you feel lonely or depressed. You may wake up feeling like you’ve come down with something or fi nd your mind wandering and unable to concentrate. In these situations, there are very few experiences that can contest a full-body massage for relaxation and stress relief. At Elements Massage, they believe in the healing power of regular massage and offer a holistic experience to detox, restore and relax your body and mind. John and Margaret Rackler opened the Stone Oak Studio in December of 2012 and have been standing by their belief in The Elements Way. The Elements Way channels the healing and restorative power of massage as a vital component of overall heath and well being. Elements Massage works to ensure that every experience is unique to each individual to serve their needs and comfort levels. The experience is personalized from pairing the correct therapist to your specific concerns to ensuring available times to work with your schedule. Front desk personnel and therapists alike listen closely to your expectations. Therapists respond during the massage with added pressure and technique as requested. The studio is focused and geared towards those in need of pain management and stress relief. They offer numerous modalities including deep tissue, sports massage, hot stones, pre-natal and Swedish techniques. “Sometimes people come in and they’re unable to move their head side to side due to neck pain,” explained Jennifer Gillis, General Manager, “They come here looking for comfort and relief. After being paired with one of our therapist, they leave here feeling ten times better.” They even have oncology massage specialist on staff for those fighting cancer and going through treatments of radiology. those battling such diseases and can be a retreat for the body from its aches and pains. The studio is also conscious of those with headaches and migraines. They ensure lighting is kept at a comfortable level for everyone and they use non-scented lotions and oils. For those with allergies, there is nothing to worry about. They use hypoallergenic products to maintain your safety and comfort. “We understand that everyone is different with different needs,” said Gillis. “All too often someone walks in with a headache or migraine; [the] light and smells make them feel worse. We want to be the place to make them feel better, and not infl ict more influence on their pain through our product choices. We work to make everyone feel brand new by the time they are leaving here.” The therapists they have on hand range in technique and ability when it comes to solving the problems of an individual’s problems and concerns. “Our therapists have extensive training and continue their education every year to better their skills and knowledge,” stated Gillis. “They truly care about the process of healing and more than 80% of our therapists have been licensed for 5 years or more. They defi nitely know their way around.” With the belief in setting you up with the correct therapist and meeting your expectation levels, the front desk staff is well versed on the therapists they have on hand and their skills. As the largest organization for girls, the only way to create new troops for new little girls is to have adults volunteer to be troop leaders.
