very Friday during the month of October entire communities come together during football season for more than just a game. Many times, it’s for the pageantry led by the spirit teams, the band, and even the mascots among others who perform there weekly. For the individuals involved and their classmates who perform along side them, Friday nights is the ultimate opportunity to showcase their talents on a grand and impressive stage. In the state of Texas, Friday nights are of such importance it has even become the subject of multiple books, been made into hit movies, and even into a hit television series. Whether it’s the team itself, the band, the mascot, the cheerleaders or the twirlers involved, in the end they all come together, often traveling, to demonstrate their support for the school they attend. Welcome Home would like to wish each
and every participating school and program good luck this year as they all work hard to achieve their goals. It takes immense talent, hard work, and complete dedication and focus to help the students in our community grow and succeed in their goals.

adies, I apologize in advance for bringing up such an ugly and vile subject, however, I would be remiss if I did not touch on a problem that has been chipping away at the very heart of marriage! Yes, I speak of the dreaded F-word: Football. The season is almost here! We must bring up this painful subject NOW before it’s too late!” For too long this parasitic pastime has been rendering the males of our species round, deaf, and blind, (though, unfortunately, not mute). Young wives, at the cusp of trying to please and “understand” their mates, foolishly fall for lines such as, “Honey, you are so wonderful. Listen, in order to finish this love poem I started for you, I really need to run it by the guys. We’re meeting over at Lou’s for a few hours, ok?” as she giggles and naively pushes him out the door, wondering why he needs 3 bags of chips and a case of beer to write poetry. The excuses become ever more clever. In fact, you can tell how long a couple has been married by the football excuse. 5 years: “Baby, Lou and Sara are having some struggles and he needs to talk.” 10 years: “Sweetie, Lou got laid off from his job and needs some support.” 20 years: “Honey, Lou had a heart attack. I really should go see him.” 30 years: “Darling, Lou’s dead. I really should go to the funeral.” (Fritos and Funyuns at a funeral? She may get suspicious. Better pick them up on the way!)

It’s a conspiracy. At the grocery store a giant STOMPERS VS. CRUSHERS! is written above a life size cheerleader with medically enhanced pom-poms pointing to a beer display. No sign of an actual football player. Even a legally blind man paused for a glance. During the game, it’s even worse. How are wives to compete and get some attention? Once, just as a test, I carried cheese dip through the living room stark naked, told my husband I was seeing another man and had lost all our money in online gambling. He grabbed the dip, high-fived his buddy and yelled, “TOUCHDOWN!” Clearly outmanned, I left and went shopping for a ladies-sized football jersey. Questions To Ask Yourself While Choosing A College Or University
T
his is a critical time for our area high school seniors. As they ramp up into their final year, it is time to focus on their future beyond graduation. Choosing a college to attend is a big decision. Every college is unique with different enrollment processes, campus lifestyles, teaching styles and reputations. You can help narrow down your options by asking yourself these five important questions. What are the admission requirements? When looking at a college or university, it’s important to know the admission requirements. Knowing these requirements can help you plan your senior year and help you prepare your applications to your desired schools. Does my cumulative GPA meet admission requirements? What is the average SAT/ACT score of students? What is the student/faculty ratio? Student-to-faculty ratio is a way of showing the size of an average classroom and the amount of interaction one gets with a professor. Lower student-to-faculty ratios can increase student achievement, enhance test scores and provide lasting academic effects. If you need closer communications with your professors in order to be successful, you may want to consider a smaller school or look into what each school offers for tutoring or help services. Am I comfortable in a big school? Am I distracted in big/small classrooms? What scholarships are available? Depending on the college, your grades,
academic and athletic abilities and various other factors, you may be eligible for different types of scholarships. Don’t forget to look at the scholarships available at each school and the criteria to qualify. How many scholarships are available? How many years do the scholarships cover? Is this a good fit? Finding a school culture that matches your personality and interests is important. Whether it be sports, Greek life, arts, extracurricular clubs or educational programs -every school is different. A school may look good on paper but feel different in person. Contact the school, get a tour and see if it’s a good fit for you. Can I see myself living there? What do you value in a school? In what areas does the school excel? Schools are often specialized in certain fields and are recognized by the level of innovation and education training they provide within certain programs. Before you decide on a school, do your research and find what programs each school is known for and whether it is worth a fouryear investment. What is this school known for? How difficult is it to get admitted into this school? What majors am I interested in pursuing? If you are still confused after asking yourself these questions, consider speaking with the staff at College Nannies + Tutors. Feel free to contact us at 210-202-0303 or on the web at www.collegetutors.com.

Testosterone: The Vital Hormone for Men & Women
By Donna Becker, D.O. Enhancement of Life (210) 545-5224 am accustomed to seeing women come to me, very desperate with symptoms of menopause: hot flashes, night sweats, and terrible mood changes. Andropause is the name given to lack of hormones in men. I give everyone a free fifteen minute consult for the purpose of assuring that we are a good fit. Recently a male business owner came to me with the classic statement: I DON’T FEEL LIKE MYSELF. His family doctor told him he was fine, “but I’m not fine!” and “I don’t know what is wrong with me!” He then described feeling unmotivated
I
and indecisive, weakness when working out, and generally, lack of joy. Without hormones, you really aren’t yourself, I told him. Some doctors might reach for the old antidepressant prescription, without even obtaining serum testosterone. The diagnosis of depression, best treated by a board certified psychiatrist, should be made after extensive blood work to rule out a medical problem. The blood levels of testosterone vary, being highest in the AM. Sex hormone binding globulin, SHBG, might be high and this hormone can bind, or make unavailable,
testosterone to the tissues. Further complicating the picture, testosterone may turn into estradiol, a female hormone, in older men. When you see those ads on TV, “ask your doctor if you have low T”, you need to ask a lot more! Ask your doctor if you have too much SHBG, too high estradiol, low thyroid, high blood sugar, or high homocysteine, a marker for Alzheimer’s and heart disease! Testosterone improves urinary and sexual function. Decreased testosterone is associated with decreased drive and motivation. Testosterone does not cause prostate cancer, but some researchers believe that it may cause the growth of pre-existing cancer. Dr. Shippen, TESTOSTERONE

ccording to the National Eye Institute, it is estimated that 100,000 Americans experience eye-related injuries from sports activities each year. And children account for one-third of these sports-related injuries. But, you can help
defend your children’s eyes this school year by encouraging them to wear the proper protective eyewear! Which sports are related with eye injuries? The sports that are most likely to be associated with eye injuries include basketball, baseball, swimming, racket sports, football, soccer, and golf. Most of the injuries in these sports are caused by
getting poked in the eye by a finger, because larger balls like basketballs really don’t fit into the eye socket, unlike racket balls and golf balls. Golf balls, especially because of their high velocity, can cause devastating eye injuries. How can I prevent eye injuries? 90 percent of sports-related eye injuries can be prevented by wearing the appropriate protective eyewear. For most sports, we
SYNDROME author, says that it takes several months of testosterone replacement for improvement in erectile dysfunction. Muscles in the perineum must become strong again under the influence of testosterone. Women need testosterone, too. Libido, the drive and desire for sex, sharply declines in most women following a hysterectomy. Because testosterone is principally supplied by the ovaries, many women experience a complete chilling of desire at the time of menopause when the ovaries stop producing hormones. The clitoris may shrink, while the vaginal canal without estradiol may wither. These physical changes do not resolve with merely a lubricant! Therefore, if your child does get hit in the face with a ball, their lenses will not shatter and injure their eyes further. We also recommend having the eyewear properly fit by an eye care professional to insure a good fit and proper protection for the specific sport. Hill Tiger Garden . . .
An Idea & A Community By Melinda Cox
T
ex Hill Middle School will work hard this school year creating critical thinkers, leaders and lifelong learners. The Tiger PTSA is on board to support and encourage that effort any way possible. We believe every child’s potential is a reality and that it is important to encourage students in mind, body and soul. The idea of a garden to encourage learning and health started in a Tiger PTSA meeting with the hope our fearless Tigers might become leaders in a lifestyle movement change. This movement hopes to promote the idea of health and understanding and appreciation of food sources and the importance of nutrition to our bodies and minds. Tex Hill Principal Rudy Jimenez knows health and nutrition are an important part of a Tiger’s success and how every student and their ideas matter. “Grant’s project exemplifies how one person’s desire to make a difference can bring a school and the community together to accomplish anything. The sheer magnitude of this Eagle Project is impressive. It is obvious that a lot of planning, preparation, and work was needed to complete the garden, shed, and fencing. We are very proud of Grant and his work!” The Tiger PTSA also values the importance of community and campus support and knows we are stronger when we all work together. The idea of a garden started in a meeting, but continued to grow in the mind of a student and Boy Scout. This summer a community of hard working students came together at Tex Hill to break ground and build a garden. This community was made up of scouts from Troop 650, chartered by Crown of Life Lutheran Church and they came together to help fellow scout Grant Kahl earn his Eagle Scout badge. Grant finished eighth grade in June at Lopez Middle School and his dad, Dr. Jeff Kahl, is a teacher at Tex Hill Middle School. Grant is currently the Academic Scholar at TMI (Texas Military Institute, Episcopal School of Texas). Grant and his friends worked many hours in the summer Texas heat to leave their mark and pay it forward in the form of a garden. “We are so thankful to Grant for his vision and willingness to work hard to give the students of Tex Hill an opportunity to learn about and enjoy the gardens. The Tex Hill PTSA will continue to maintain these beautiful gardens, and we are certainly excited about what is to come,” said Tex Hill Middle School Tiger PTSA President, Monica Pipes. Grant and Dr. Kahl designed and developed plans for

the garden and worked together with the Hill PTSA, Hill administration and NEISD Construction. Grant then went out to the local community, family and friends to ask for donations and guidance to get the project started. He received help from Sunbelt, Lowes, E-Wing, Quality Fence and Texas ATM AgriLife. Friends and family including, the Kahl family, the Friesenhahn family, the Freeman and Culhane family and the Tedors and Rosenwald family also supported Grant and his project. Soil for the project was donated by New Earth. Grant was able to raise over $4000 and bring a community together to start this ground breaking project. During the month of August, dozens of scouts, including some Hill students, worked throughout the day in the Texas heat to break ground, move dirt, rake, carry cinder blocks and build a garden. In the end, the scouts put together two 6X43 foot gardens surrounded by a fence. They also constructed a shed and laid down hundreds of pavers around the beds to ensure the gardens would be wheelchair accessible. The gardens are at the front of the campus in the area in front of you when you drop your Tiger at school. The scouts did such a remarkable job of making the garden blend in with the rest of the school, you might not even notice their work if you didn’t know it was there. The next step is to fill the beds with all types of fun, nutritious produce to eat and enjoy. This garden will be used by all our Tigers and will provide an area for your student to experiment, learn and develop an understanding of where some food comes from and what steps are involved in
www.welcomehomesa.com
that process. We are very proud of our campus and community for all the effort and hard work put into this project. Grant and his fellow troop members and friends put heart and soul into his idea and it was exciting to watch it develop. “I wanted to do something for the school that would last for generations, allowing students to have a choice for an alternative program that teaches about sustainability, ecology, and biological science. In addition, I wanted this sensory garden to be something different that no other school had,” Grant said. This garden and teaching tool is a promise to the next generation or class of Tigers and to our campus and community that we are working hard as group to create strong Tigers, mind, body and soul. Lots of hard work went into this project and an important community came together to get the work done and to leave behind an opportunity. Thanks to a dedicated and enterprising Eagle Scout and the hard work of a community, Hill Middle School has a garden and the excitement of things to come. Thank you Grant Kahl for your dedication and hard work and for caring about your community and thank you to our Hill administration for your continued PTSA support. Communities are stronger together and the Tiger PTSA can’t wait to see what will grow in the garden and in the minds and hearts of our students.

The Need For Headlight Restoration Services
W
By Rusty Belden, President Belden’s Automotive & Tires (210) 494-0017
hile driving down the road at night have you noticed that some headlights are not as bright? Hi Rusty Belden here for our family at Belden’s Automotive & Tires. Headlights will begin to fade over time. As your headlights fade, the amount of light that makes it out of the headlight becomes less, and before you know it, it can reduce visibility during night driving and driving becomes difficult and dangerous.
The reason your headlights fade is usually due to age and to oxidation on the lens. Additionally, exposure to weather, pollutants and solar radiation can also diminish the appearance of an otherwise attractive vehicle. It’s a problem that affects nearly every vehicle make and model, foreign or domestic. You may have seen several quick fixes and shortcuts to do at
home on the internet. These fixes only last a very short time and may have to be done several times to get your headlights looking like new. Belden’s Automotive & Tires offers a high quality BG Headlight Restoration Service that removes scratches and discoloration and restores the lens to original factory brightness. As an alternative to lens replacement, this service is completely safe and cost effective adding a new long lasting protective layer. Belden’s highly recommends using BG Products because of their high quality of product and their dedication to making vehicles last longer and perform better. Call us today and ask us about our Headlight Restoration Service to get your headlights looking like new! The Walker Belden Foundation would like to invite each of you to join us in our fundraising efforts to support this amazing special needs facility. The Walker Belden Foundation is thrilled to help continue the amazing work and play at Morgan’s Wonderland. Last year’s golf tournament raised $75,000 that was donated to Morgan’s Wonderland. Through the generosity of our family, donors, sponsors and golfers, we will be able to have another successful year! www. thewalkerbeldenfoundation-org.webs.com. Having a child with special needs, Jason and I have noticed that most local attractions do not have activities designed for cognitive and physically challenged children. The first time our family visited Morgan’s Wonderland we were thrilled to see all the accommodations for children with special needs. Walker can enjoy fun outdoor activities with his friends and family for years to come. As a family, we want every special needs child to have this same wonderful experience. Below is a list of ways you can help us achieve our goal. Morgan’s Wonderland Morgan’s Wonderland is the only theme park in the world designed with specialneeds individuals in mind. The inspiration for Morgan’s Wonderland came from philanthropist Gordon Hartman’s 20-yearold daughter Morgan. Her soaring spirit despite cognitive and physical challenges sparked within Hartman and wife Maggie

Halloween And Your Pet’s Safety
W
hen you say “Happy Halloween” you think of candy and fun, but beware of some dangers this night can pose to your pets. Lots of visitors, people roaming the streets, and scary costumes can all contribute to your normally calm, friendly pet turning into Kujo. Here are
some safety tips to follow during this night of ghosts and goblins: Don’t leave pets in the yard. There are many stories of vicious pranksters who have teased, injured, stolen, even killed pets on Halloween. This time of year can be especially deadly for black cats. If you can’t keep them secure in your house, consider boarding them for the night. No Candy: As much as they beg,
Free Basketball Camp For Local Kids Submitted By Renata Bueche asketball camp is something that hundreds of kids in the San Antonio area look forward to every summer. Camps are a place where you make new friends, swim all day or play your favorite sport. It›s a great experience that every child should have. That was the thought behind All Star Basketball Camp. Elijah Johns, a junior at Johnson High School wanted to give children in all areas of the city this opportunity. He contacted universities, local business and organizations seeking donations and sponsorship. The hard work paid off! For a 2nd year in a row, he was able to offer a free basketball camp held at Our Lady of the Lake University. After distributing flyers at SAISD schools, the camp was filled with 40 excited campers ages 8 to 12. Elijah with the help of volunteers; David Grotzinger, Brooke Evans and Avery Linhart worked with kids on the fundamentals of basketball. Shooting, ball handling, and passing drills were done throughout the week. There was also a lot of scrimmaging and even a little kickball. “For some of these kids, this was their first camp. Seeing their smiles was the best part of the week” Elijah spoke of the experience.

remember chocolate can be dangerous for pets. Symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, even seizures. Candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can be poisonous to dogs, even in small amounts. Ingesting tin foil and cellophane wrappers can pose a choking hazard or cause an intestinal blockage. If you suspect your pet has ingested a potentially dangerous substance, you can call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. Watch those lit pumpkins: Pets can knock it over and cause a fire. Curious kittens and wagging tails run the risk of getting burned. If you dress up your pet, make sure the costume isn’t constricting or unsafe. Don’t obstruct their vision. Even the sweetest dog can get snappy when they can’t see what’s going on around them. Dressing your pet up can be stressful. If he doesn’t love it, don’t do it. Keep pets in a separate room during trick-or-treat hours; many strangers in strange costumes can be scary for them. Plus when the door opens you run a high risk of your cat or dog darting out during the commotion. Be sure your pet’s collars and IDs are on secure. Even if they don’t normally wear one, this would be an important night to do so. If there is an accidental escape, identification will increase the chances of them being returned to you. Want to teach your dog new “Tricks” for Halloween? DON’T miss our “Clicks with Tricks” class beginning October 22nd. This action packed class will have you and your

a take on a coconut daiquiri, dubbed The Cuban Cox, with an interesting origin story: During the Spanish American war, a gentleman named Jennings Cox was living in Cuba near the city of Daiquiri. He ran out of gin and was afraid to serve his guests rum straight up, so he added lime and sugar to make it more delicious. Thus, the “real” daiquiri was born, or so the story goes. There are several ‘real’ daiquiri stories floating around. Cuban Cox is made with a dry Riesling from Australia! Super crisp and tart with a floral, limey characteristic. Flor de Caña Pina Colada recipe calls for Flor de Caña 7 Rum; a Nicaraguan rum with a rich flavor profile of fig, vanilla, and oak: One sip and it feels like summer vacay all over again. Summer Real Estate Recap By AJ Reygadas Power Real Estate Group (210) 313-5554
T
he San Antonio real estate market is one of the most active in the United States. Since the recession, home prices in the area have been rapidly been increasing all over the city! San Antonio is a great city filled with many options for growing or new families. In addition, the economy in San Antonio is strong and diverse driven mainly by large companies and the military. There have been various companies that have set up shop in town, creating plenty of new jobs. This is partially what has helped with the rapid increase in this year’s real estate market, and for the way homes have sold in record breaking time. There are many homes that sold within a day or two of hitting the market. On average, homes sold less than 30 days after first listing on the market. There are many homes that actually sold for more than the list price. This summer saw a lot of positive activity and growth. With school underway, the market is taking a little dip. But that is normal and consistent with how the selling year usually trends. Despite of the recent drop in the stock market, people are still continuing to look to sell their home, and we do see the more serious buyers still shopping. The rest of the year should shed some light on what to expect for 2016. While I don’t see
the same flurry of excitement happening next year in the market, I do believe we will continue to see a growing, and consistent market. Contact us for a free market of evaluation of what your home. If you are looking to buy and sell, we offer packages designed to help save you money. Just simply ask. Are you on the fence about buying? Talk to us and let us show you the benefits of home ownership over renting. Take care San Antonio! AJ Reygadas won many awards including Multi-Million Dollar Producer, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014; Top 1% of San Antonio REALTORS, 2013, 2014; Top 150 Latino Realtors Nationwide, 2013,2014. It’s about being the best you, you can possibly be, and that itself will take you far in life.” JJ the Jaguar snapped “selfies” with the Tuscany Heights students and provided hugs all around!
