y this time you should be in your “back to school” routine. You know exactly when to leave so you can avoid the heaviest traffic and if you leave 5 minutes later, it could make you 30 minutes late for work. September is always an incredibly busy and special time of year for me. August 29th is my Mom’s birthday and mine is on September 1st. Every year it is such a blessing to celebrate our birthday’s together. We have done this for as long as I can remember. I absolutely love and take advantage of every day that I can have with my Mom. One of our favorite things to do is go to Spurs games together. She is such a Spurs fanatic. Sometimes I just sit back and watch her enjoying herself at the games. This will always be priceless to me. I have also included a photo of my father, Gilbert Groomer, celebrating Lobstermania at Groomers Seafood. As usual this annual event was a huge success. This is the 14th anniversary of 9/11. Remember anytime you see one of our service men and women you should thank them for their sacrifice, but this month more than any, make that special effort to come together as a community. 9/11 set off the war on terrorism; a war the military members and their families are still fighting today. Let’s not forget that our freedom comes at a steep price. Living Through Giving is in full swing preparing for our annual Winter Celebration. North Central Baptist is our Co-Sponsor and has already started preparing for what will be our best event ever. North Central Baptist had a Summer Celebration on August 1st to start the excitement for this event. Now is the time we coordinate with the school

organizations that participate in our annual Toy Drive competing for $500.00! Scavenger Hunt starts on November 1st. Make sure to pick up Welcome Home’s November edition and get this list of businesses to earn your Grand Prize Drawing Tickets. You will NOT believe what we have in store for you this year! Remember that every toy goes to a child that has been displaced from their homes and families due to abuse, neglect and other reasons. If you participate in this event, you should take pride in this accomplishment. If you don’t, I ask that you consider joining us to make this year the best year ever. This year, the event will take place at North Central Baptist Hospital and will have more booths, more participants and some special celebrity signings. n the fall of 2013, four students from Reagan High School got together and decided that they wanted to start a saxophone quartet. A saxophone quartet is made up of one of each of the most common types of saxophones. One Soprano Saxophone (the highest pitched and smallest instrument), one Alto Saxophone (the most common), one Tenor Saxophone (mostly known for its wide use in jazz music), and one Baritone Saxophone (the largest and lowest instrument in the group). Their director, Mr. Greg White, was thrilled about the idea; Mr. White is a saxophone player and had wanted to form a saxophone chamber ensemble for years. What transpired was something Mr. White never would have imagined. The Quid Nunc Saxophone Quartet is in for a busy year, but it won’t all be away from home! They will be giving regular concerts throughout the school year at Ronald Reagan High School, as well as performing around town at various events. You can find all of the information on Quid Nunc Performances on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/quidnuncsaxophone. The Quid Nunc Saxophone Quartet is always looking for sponsors and

t’s true. Money simply doesn’t buy what it used to. Just the other day, my mother called to inform me she was going to Hawaii in a couple of days and she was appalled to find she must bring her own pillow. Airlines, she explained, are trying to save money and will no longer be supplying them. As I finish cleaning my toilet, my first thought is, of course, “Hello?! Let’s look at the big picture. You’re going to HAWAII!” But after some thought, it occurred to me that this truly was a disturbing trend. If memory serves, the first to go was the gourmet Chicken Cordon Bleu with baby asparagus smothered in mushroom gravy, to be replaced with a sack lunch, like a kid going on a field trip to the zoo. These were quickly replaced by bags of peanuts, presumably, to feed the elephants upon your I Can Help You If You Are . . . • Startup Businesses Clients • Growing Businesses Clients • Retired Clients Starting Biz • Taxpayers Who Previously Prepared Their Own Returns John Horton,CPA

arrival at the zoo. Now it’s the pillows and blankets. What next? BYO toilet paper? Flashlight to read by? A stadium seat to slide onto the benches that have replaced the plush, padded seats? And don’t forget your armband floaties! Benches do not make the best flotation devices in case of an emergency water landing. Comforting… What if other industries were to follow this trend? My beauty salon would sport a sign that says: “Professional Style and Cut-$658. OR, I could opt for the Trim With Handheld Weed-whacker by Outof-Work Gardener-5 bucks. How about the field of education? “Johnny, this is the third time this week you have forgotten your Porta-Desk. And where is your lunch? You know the school doesn’t provide lunch any longer.” “Yes, ma’am, but my parents say they don’t provide lunch any longer either. Something about ‘teaching the evil government a lesson’ or some such thing and the word ‘martyr’ came up more than once. I don’t really know what it all means.” I dread the day I am at McDonalds with my grandson. “That’s one Happy Meal, KA-CHING! Your total is $23.50.” What!? I can’t afford that! “Not to worry, ma’am,” he says (still smiling). If you brought your own ketchup, don’t need a straw and we leave out the toy, you can have our Not As Happy As It Used To Be Meal for 8 bucks!” Perhaps it won’t come to that but just to be safe, moms, you better buy a bigger purse. Why Visiting A College Will Help Your Decision-Making Process By Steve Johnson all brings many things—cooler weather, back-to-school, and for new high school seniors, the important decision of which colleges to pursue. Narrowing down your options for college is no easy task, and there are many ways to decide which one is right for you. The staff at College Nannies and Tutors recommends an organized approach. You can start by listing your desired areas of study. If you have not decided on an exact major yet, that is OK. However, you should narrow your focus to a general area of study. Based on this list, many schools should fall off, leaving only the schools catering to your chosen major or area of study. Next, location and extracurricular activities should be factored into your decision. Rank your current list of potential colleges by these factors. Of course, any potential scholarships for academics or sports will significantly influence your list as well. After ranking your list, look at the top few. From here, the next step is to visit each campus to see if it feels right for you. Visiting a campus is a great way to test the waters of a desired school. Many students know instantly when arriving at a campus if it is the right fit for them. Others

F

may need to sit in on a class, meet with an admissions counselor, or spend the weekend with a current student to get a feel for the school’s personality and culture. Whichever way you choose, visiting a campus firsthand will help you truly decide if you could see yourself involved with that specific college or university. Additionally, most schools have set days for potential schools to visit. On these days, they have a full schedule planned catered to give each visitor a campus tour, meet with professors, check out the dorm rooms, eat in the dining halls, etc. Scheduling to partake on these days is the best way to get the most out of your campus visit, and will allow you the opportunities and resources to decide if that specific college is the best choice for you. Make sure to take your time when deciding which college is the best option, and utilize all of the resources offered for you. Don’t be afraid to visit as many campuses as necessary to find the one that makes you feel at home! For more information or assistance in the areas of college admissions preparation, reach out to the staff at College Nannies and Tutors – 210-202-0303 or visit us on the web. www.collegetutors.com.

the top two bands to represent our area at the 3C Honor Band State Contest. Fifteen bands total from each of the seven areas of Texas competed in the 3C State Honor Band Contest. Lopez Band was ranked as the 14th band in the state. The 2014-2015 Lopez Honors Band is made up of 49 of the top 7th and 8th grade students in the band program. The band is under the direction of Kim Garza and Jessica Powell. This is the second time in the school’s eight year existence that the Lopez Band has advanced to the state level. “We are incredibly humbled and honored to be amongst these elite bands in Texas,” said Garza. Garza and Powell also exclaim, “This is a feat that could not happen without our amazing students who are committed to hard work and dedication, encouraging and supportive parents, and a district of supportive administrative members that cheer us on all the way!”

Special To Welcome Home he Lopez Middle School Honors Band was named one of the “Honor Band Finalists” in the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) 3C Honor Band State Contest held on July 23. The contest was held in downtown San Antonio at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. Advancing to the state level is the highest honor for a band program, and is a contest that happens every other year in Texas for 3C bands. The process began back in June with bands in Region 12 submitting their very best recording of their UIL (University Interscholastic League) performance selections. At the Region 12 Honor Band Contest, the top two bands were selected to advance to the Area contest. Lopez Band, along with the Bush Middle School Band, were the two selected to represent Region 12. A few weeks later at the Area E contest, Lopez Band was again selected as one of

Estradiol, Progesterone, & Testosterone Restore Bone By Donna Becker, D.O. Enhancement of Life (210) 545-5224 he told me that her doctor had actually warned her not to jump during exercising, as she might crack a vertebra. Her bones were very thin, osteoporotic, as were her mom’s, and grandma’s. She could not take a bisphosphonate, the most common treatment for osteoporosis, due to terrible burning in her esophagus, a known side effect of this class of drugs. “Do you think you could help me? I take calcium, vitamin D, and I exercise with

S

weights, but I am still losing bone in my urine, the Urine NTx test.” The urine NTx test measures the amount of bone breakdown products in a second morning void. A urine NTx greater than 36, which is amount a young adult normally produces, is bad and indicates on-going bone loss. Her number was always high and every year, her bone density test was a little worse. Her bone specialist had wanted to give her a once a year injection which also reportedly stopped bone loss. However, after reading

Dry Eyes vs. Allergy Eyes

n addition to announcing our Showcase for Versace and Coach on Sept. 29, 2015, we wanted to use this issue to talk about 2 very common eye conditions in San Antonio: Dry Eye The tears your eyes produce are necessary for overall eye health and clear vision. Dry eye means that your eyes do not produce enough tears or that you produce

tears which do not have the proper chemical composition. Often, dry eye is part of the natural aging process. It can also be caused by blinking or eyelid problems, medications like antihistamines, oral contraceptives and antidepressants, a dry climate, wind and dust, general health problems like arthritis or Sjogren’s syndrome and chemical or thermal burns to your eyes. If you have dry eye, your symptoms may include irritated, scratchy, dry, uncomfortable or red eyes, a burning sensation or feeling of something foreign in your eyes and blurred vision.

about the side effects, she refused. I told her that the 3 pillars of bone health were Vitamin D, sex hormones, and weight bearing. Estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone would help her. Estradiol is important for men, too. They convert testosterone into a little bit of estradiol, so if a man is deficient in testosterone, he is likely deficient in estradiol and at risk for osteoporosis. The side effects of estradiol may be an increase in breast or uterine cancer. However, in the Women’s Health Initiative Study, synthetic estradiol alone did not cause an increase in breast cancer, but the rate of breast cancer increased when the horse’s urine, synthetic estradiol was combined with progestin, a synthetic, progesterone-like drug. Other side effects which have been found with hormone replacement therapy whether bio-identical or synthetic, may be gall bladder and liver

problems, and blood clots. We talked for over an hour, I told her that possibly, getting her hormones equal to those of a young adult might halt the bone loss. If she did not respond to hormone therapy, then I told her she should just take the injections. Hormone therapy would most definitely help her sleep, resolve hot flashes, and bring her vagina back to life. She responded well and her urine NTx was below 36, the magic number. Now she could literally jump for joy! “I’m so glad I found, you”. Donna Becker, D.O., Board Certified in Emergency Medicine. Enhancement of Life is located at 14603 Huebner Rd., Suite 2601, San Antonio, TX 78231. For more information, call (210) 545-5224 or visit www.antiagingsa.com.

Dry eye can be managed, and we can prescribe treatment so your eyes remain healthy and your vision is unaffected. Some treatments that we might prescribe include using artificial tears and using a moisturizing ointment, especially at bedtime, or prescription medication that helps the body to produce more tears. In some cases, small plugs are inserted in the corner of the eyes to slow tear drainage. Allergy eyes Your body’s allergies to pollen, cosmetics, animals or fabrics often bring on allergic conjunctivitis. This can become a chronic condition if not treated properly. Symptoms include redness, burning, itching, and sometimes discharge from the eyes. It can make contact lens wear very difficult or even unbearable. It is important to see the doctors

at Vision Source for evaluation to determine the correct cause for the condition. Many over the counter medications can have side effects and are not intended for long term use. There are prescription medications that alleviate the symptoms and can make your life comfortable again and are safe for prolonged use. If you know that you experience allergy symptoms during a particular time of the year (cedar fever), it is important to begin treatment before your symptoms become unbearable All of the doctors at Stone Oak Vision Source are certified to treat and manage eye disease. They are located at 19202 Stone Oak Parkway Ste 106. Visit us online at www.visionsource-stoneoak.com or call for an appointment at 495-9020.

Living & Breathing An Enjoyable Life “L

IFE CHANGING FREEDOM! That is what Dr. Amanda Trott has given our family with her cutting edge treatment and care at Stone Oak Allergy,” said Frederick, Rahnae and Joshua of the Johnson Family. “For years we suffered with the miserable symptoms of seasonal allergies. Watching our son have problems with congestion and trouble sleeping, we turned to Dr. Trott. She is innovative, compassionate, caring and dedicated to helping each and every one of her patients as if they were her only one. We now have the freedom to be outdoors enjoying nature instead of being indoors, captive to our allergies, and our son can now participate in school sports. Try Dr. Amanda Trott as we did. You walk in as a patient and leave as family.” At Stone Oak Allergy, an enthusiastic and friendly staff, headed by Dr. Amanda Trott-Gregorio, is eager to welcome and assist old and new patients, to get them living a more enjoyable life, just like the Johnson family. While South Texas locals are more than familiar with sneezing, runny noses and the various other symptoms that are the consequence of allergies, Dr. Trott-Gregorio offers testing and treatments to manage these nuisances. Since living here for the past few years, the biggest thing that I’ve noticed about the population of San Antonio is just how allergic patients are,” said Dr. Amanda Trott-Gregorio. “It’s rare that you meet someone that doesn’t complain of allergic symptoms, and yet, the majority go untreated and unevaluated and just kind of suffer through it. It is a shame because it really interferes with your quality of life.” Allergies, an abnormal reaction of the immune system to typically harmless substances, can not only cause unwanted symptoms but can also be the cause of asthma and eczema, which she also treats. Consequently, allergies and associated problems can keep many people from everyday activities, places and opportunities. As Dr. Trott-Gregorio explained, “This part of Texas is a really allergenic little piece of the world we love to call home. The San Antonio/Austin area is the only part of the United States with a winter pollen issue- cedar. We are more allergic here, as a population, than most of the world.” At Stone Oak Allergy, Dr. Trott-Gregorio and her team not only work with their patients on a personal level to find out the causes of the problems, but they also work to obtain the perfect solution specifically designed for each person.

September 2015 • Welcome Home • 78258

“Skin testing is the way to determine your specific allergies, so that you know what to avoid,” Dr. TrottGregorio explained. “You can tailor your mediation regimen to be scheduled certain times of the year that you know that the things to which you are allergic are going to be in the air. Injections are specifically tailored for each individual patient to include only the allergens to which that patient is sensitized.” Injections work to change your immune systems so that you can be around the things to which you were previously allergic and no longer have symptoms. This life-changing experience has impacted a number of people in San Antonio and the surrounding area. The shots can be given as a cluster, which allows individuals to feel better in roughly eight weeks, or a slower method, which is over a period of 29 weeks. “My treatment under Dr. Trott has been a lifechanging experience,” said patient Jennifer Terveen. “I had always suffered from severe year-round allergy symptoms, and I haven’t really had any symptoms since my second week of cluster shots. It’s just made such a huge difference!” Whether it is treatment through avoidance, medication or injections, Stone Oak Allergy is determined to find the right solution for each person who walks through the door. “‘I got my life back’ is a phrase I hear almost daily from my patients,” said Trott-Gregorio. “It means living

www.welcomehomesa.com

without the burden of allergy symptoms or breathing limitations. Why not feel good every day? We can make that happen.” Although allergies and asthma are the most commonly treated conditions, Dr. Trott-Gregorio also sees patients for allergic skin disorders, chronic cough, non-allergic nasal symptoms, immune deficiencies, and patients who have recurrent infections. Her skills and expertise in these areas are not limited to any particular age, opening the door to even newborns, from which various mothers benefited. “My baby had a severe rash all over, especially on his face, since he was 2 days old, and we saw a pediatrician and a dermatologist who both told me to stop breastfeeding,” explained Melinda Rippy, mother of 9-month-old patient Luke. “I wanted to find a way to fix his rash and continue breastfeeding, and Dr. Trott was the first doctor who took the time to listen and figure out a way to make both of those things happen. Now his rash is gone!” Due to her passion for her practice and for truly helping people, Dr. Trott-Gregorio has focused her profession into a way of reaching out to the people of the community and making a difference in their lives. “I really care. And so do all the people who work with me. I’m here to listen and figure out how to help you, specifically. Each patient is unique, and requires a different approach than the last, and I’m here to tailor recommendations for your needs. It’s why I went into medicine in the first place.” Dr. Trott-Gregorio explained. “I feel like it is important to love what you do, and getting to know people every day and learning about their lives is such a blessing.” At Stone Oak Allergy, patients will feel right at home as they join Dr. Amanda Trott-Gregorio and her talented staff on a journey to enhance their lives. My Passion

Anti-Aging “O

ne size does not fit all,” says Dr. Donna Becker, as she describes the medical treatment of menopausal symptoms. Unfortunately, there aren’t many other doctors who have the same belief or the same understanding of hormones as Dr. Becker. “People go to their regular physicians, or even their gynecologist, and are usually initially given antidepressants. Menopause is about lack of hormones, which may be a sad event for some people, but the underlying problem is not a chemical imbalance in the brain, it’s a lack of estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone.” Dr. Becker believes that aging is a slowly progressive degenerative disease which may be partially stabilized by supplying the correct amount of hormones in the correct proportions. For men, the optimal amount of testosterone may be achieved by measuring sex hormone binding globulin and estradiol. “We want to have our hormones optimal, mimicking the levels found in the young active adult.” No one would prescribe hormones such as thyroid or insulin without checking blood levels, yet this is done all the time with menopausal women-if they are even offered hormones, she says. Dr. Becker discovered hormone replacement therapy when she had terrible problems with her own menopause, almost 20 years ago (she is 67). Unable to find any help locally, she flew to another state to see an anti-aging doctor. “I had been prescribed the usual horse’s urine derived estrogen and herbal remedies that didn’t work—I was at the end of my rope and only too happy to finally consult an expert in anti-aging,” explained Becker. “When the doctor told me my thyroid levels were low, I initially argued with him. However, although my levels were in the normal range, they weren’t in the optimal range. Bringing them up to an optimal level, along with prescriptions for estradiol, testosterone, progesterone, and DHEA, made a world of difference for me. That is when I knew I wanted to help others as I had been helped.” Her quest led her to becoming a physician who is board certified in Anti-Aging. The American Board of Medical

Specialties does not recognize board certification in Anti-aging-yet. Anti-aging doctors have taken courses and passed oral and written exams to achieve expertise in this emerging specialty. Dr. Becker is board certified in Emergency Medicine and had worked in downtown Santa Rosa ER and Texsan hospitals for years. “I wanted to do more than treat some acute illness, I wanted to lead the person into a healthier life style before the heart attack, stroke, or broken hip! Anti-aging is about nutrition, exercise, and healthy habits, not just hormone replacement therapy, although that is very important,” Dr. Becker emphasized. Dr. Becker really listens to her patients. A total of

www.welcomehomesa.com

three to four hours over several months, after the initial consultation, is required for total hormone balancing by laboratory analysis and physical symptoms. It is refreshing for her patients because they are so used to being hustled in and out of the office, being told their symptoms are normal due to aging, so live with it, or being pushed into a depression misdiagnosis. Not only does Dr. Becker listen, she takes action. “I always tell my patients that we will do 3 pages of lab tests. They receive a copy of that lab work along with a line-by-line explanation. I sit with them and tell them exactly where they need the extra help,” Dr. Becker explained. Her goal—bring the body back into the balance it had when the person was in their 20s. “That is when we are the healthiest, and our hormone levels a peak operating levels,” she stressed. What are the main benefits to this anti-aging regimen? “Well, apart from feeling better, my patients begin to look better, too,” Dr. Becker laughs. “They have more energy, thus they begin to lose weight, which in turn motivates them to look after themselves better, which results in a healthier life style, and so the improvements build. Patients do have to do their share regarding the weight loss—but with balanced hormones, it is no longer like pushing a ball up a hill. The person feels better, so feels like exercising and more importantly, feels great afterward.” “Everyone remarks on the deep, refreshing quality of sleep with progesterone,” Dr. Becker stated. Her passion is apparent, her love of people obvious and her desire to improve the quality of life for all people, regardless of age, admirable. Dr. Becker is a true testament of the doctor who takes a dose of her own medicine!

ou’ve probably never heard a saxophone sound like this before! Four students at Ronald Reagan High School have been accepted to perform at one of the most prestigious events in all of music education. In the fall of 2013, four students from Reagan High School got together and decided that they wanted to start a saxophone quartet. The motivation of the students in that founding group (Will Pyle, Paityn Tiller, Bryant Anderson, and Tristan Torres) was incredible. They worked day and night, sacrificing weekends, evenings and holidays in the pursuit of musical excellence. They dubbed themselves “Quid Nunc,” meaning “What now?” in Latin, after struggling to come up with a name for their new group. They also decided that they wanted to compete in the Houston Underground Saxophone Quartet competition (the largest of its kind in the country) and came in 3rd place in their first year. Since then, they have had some personnel turnover due to graduating seniors, but have never looked back. The level of musicianship has continued to rise in their pursuit of excellence, with increases in their

12

dedication to match. Under the direction of Mr. Greg White the quartet has garnered an impressive amount of recognition in its short history. In the 2014-2015 school year, the Quid Nunc Quartet (Consisting of founding members Will Pyle, Paityn Tiller and Bryant Anderson and being joined by newcomer Robin Brown) competed in chamber music competitions across Texas, placing 2nd in the Austin Chamber Orchestra’s Coltman Chamber Music Competition, a select contest that requires a pre-audition to be invited to compete. The Quid Nunc Quartet also took home the Junior League of San Antonio’s inaugural Margeret Tobin FAME Award for Outstanding Instrumental Ensemble along with a $2,000 grant for the Band Program. The Quartet has also been featured in concert with the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition Gold Medalist Mirasol Quartet, and has performed a Masterclasses with the internationally renowned Zzyzx Quartet, and Professor of Saxophone (retired) from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst Lynn Klock. The biggest goal for the Quid Nunc Quartet last year however was a recording for the Midwest Clinic in Chicago Illinois. The Midwest Clinic is one of the largest music education conferences in the world, and having the opportunity to perform at the clinic is likely the highest honor a high school aged musician can attain. The process for admittance into the clinic is a taped audition, three letters of recommendation from professional music educators and demographic information about the school that is applying. Countless applicants each year vie for only a few number of concerts, and the Quid Nunc Quartet got in! The 2015-2016 Quid Nunc Quartet (featuring

founding member Bryant Anderson, two year member Robin Brown, and new members Ryan Montemayor, Joshua Milford-Rosales, and Nick Koutras) will be traveling to Chicago, Illinois in December to perform at the Midwest Clinic. The Midwest Clinic features some of the very best in Middle School, High School and Collegiate talent with the main focus being on spreading awareness of music education and music publication. The convention is responsible for thousands of new works of music in every genre. This year, the Quid Nunc Saxophone Quartet is commissioning two new works for saxophone quartet. One by composer Drew Shanefield (ASCAP) and the other by local composer Carol Britton Chambers. The opportunity for these students to give a world premiere of these new pieces is truly once in a lifetime. The Quid Nunc Saxophone Quartet is always looking for sponsors and additional performance opportunities to help raise funds for their trip to Chicago. More information on performance, and sponsorship opportunities can be found by e-mailing their director, Greg White, at gwhite@neisd.net. Greg White and the Quid Nunc Quartet would like to take this time to personally thank all of the people who have helped support them in this process. Special thanks to Dan Morrison, Director of Bands at

Camber, Caster and Toe: Optimize Your Alignment

H

By Rusty Belden, President Belden’s Automotive & Tires (210) 494-0017

i Rusty Belden here for our family at Belden’s Automotive & Tires. Back to school is here and additional driving is a necessity. While running your summer errands have you noticed your vehicle pulling one side to another? This may be due to your vehicle being out of alignment. The most important reason to keep your vehicle aligned, you ask? If you keep driving when your vehicle is out of alignment your tires may wear unevenly because as your vehicle is pulling to one side, you must steer it back to drive straight, causing the outside of the tire to wear faster. There are many reasons your vehicle gets out of alignment:

hitting a curb is the most common reason and happens to even the most cautious of drivers. Another reason is those pesky potholes we have all driven into one time or another. However, alignment issues doesn’t have to be because of a damaging occurrence, it can happen with the regular bumps and bangs of regular everyday driving. Constantly driving the same route to drop off the kids, or get to work each morning will add up and take your vehicle out of alignment. Maintaining proper alignment is important to protecting both your vehicle’s tire life and your safety.

arry Hagendorf, the leading authority on deck and patio care in South Texas, has been cleaning and sealing decks for more than 20 years.

Q: Why does my wooden deck look so bad? A: According to Architectural Digest, unprotected wood only lasts for 9-14 years. I recommend that you clean the wood on your deck and seal it with an oil-based penetrating sealer. Q: What sealer would you recommend? A: My preference, after years of trial and error research, is Barry Premium Blend oilbased penetrating sealer that is designed to

look for dry cell structure in the wood. It will penetrate first to the bottom of the cracks, nail holes, and knots. Barry’s Premium Blend will protect from the surface down, stabilizing the cell structure of the wood. Q: What care should I give to my pebblestone? A: On new and older pebblestone, first acid wash the film of concrete off the rocks. Then, oxidize the surface to kill mold and mildew. Last, seal the stone to its natural wet look. Q: Why are the rocks from my pebblestone pool surround sticking to my

Wheel alignments ensure that all four wheels are consistent and are optimized for maximum contact with the surface of the road. The way a wheel is oriented on your car is broken down to three major components; camber, caster, and toe. Camber angle is the measure in degrees of the difference between the wheels vertical alignment perpendicular to the surface. Caster is defined as the angle created by the steering pivot point from the front to back of the vehicle. Toe represents the angle derived from pointing the tires inward or outward from a top-down view. Grills and Tailgating By Cotton Clark Jeff’s Backyard (210) 342-4760 t’s September, and that means one thing in Texas: football season! It also means food. Sure, restaurants are aplenty before and after the game, but tailgating is becoming increasingly popular. So, why not engage friends and buddies with some fresh cooked food at the game? Y’all can talk football strategy while chowing down at the same time. Tailgating is a blast, but it requires planning, so here are some tips to make your game day culinary feast the best it can be. HOW MANY TO FEED? – Borrowing the oft-used phrase, “If you cook it, they will come.” Seriously, you should consider a contingency factor of 25-30% more than what you think you’ll need. Example: if you’re originally thinking to cook three packages of hot dogs, turn it into four. Ten burgers become 12 (or more). 50 buffalo wings? make it 65. Trust me, there will be a hungry mouth to eat it. PREPARATION – Be like Santa: Make a list and check it twice. Procure and prep what you will need ahead of time: Grill and stand. Menu. Spices/flavorings. Coolers for prepped food (use dry ice at the bottom). Aluminum trays for serving. Plates, napkins, cups, etc. Portable tables and chairs. Fuel source. (For nighttime high school games, propane is convenient; for daytime events, like many college

I

games, consider lump charcoal and wood for the aroma… but please: NO LIGHTER FLUID! Use a chimney starter instead.) Cooking utensils, e.g., tongs, spatulas, grill gloves, cutlery, etc. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION – Coordinate with friends and arrive early so that you: 1) can be together, and 2) get a good parking spot for the stadium. LIQUID REFRESHMENT – Obviously, this includes your favorite beverage of choice (hint! hint!), but don’t forget water. Lots and lots of water. Hey, it’s Texas, folks, which means it’s still hot in September and even in October. Hydrate. CLEAN-UP – Bring a healthy supply of paper towels and spray cleaner. Somebody’s “favorite beverage” can too often result in a mess somewhere! There is no end as to what you can cook on game day, yet whatever you choose it will turn out much better with a little forethought and planning. Happy Tailgating from Jeff’s Backyard! Jeff’s Backyard is proud to offer a great line of outdoor backyard equipment to you. We plan to continue bringing you the latest innovative models and equipment in the backyard market. Building Leaders…. One Book At A Time Submitted By Wendy Howk, Canyon Ridge Librarian verything is AWESOME at Canyon Ridge Elementary this year. Students and teachers are looking forward to a new year of fostering imagination, collaborating, creating and building leaders, as supported by programs in the CR Library. Librarian, Wendy Howk, is adding Legos to the library with learning in mind. Through generous donations from the North East Educational Foundation, Canyon Ridge library has received a grant to add Lego We-Do Construction kits to library programming. The grant will provide funds for 8 construction kits plus extensions, enough for an entire classroom to be engaged in small groups to encourage collaborative problem solving. The Library of today is much more than simply a place with books to read. The Library is a hub of learning for all subject areas, frequently integrating technology across all subjects. Today’s students are challenged with a world that is ever-changing in which they will need to be life-long learners that can adapt to change. This requires the ability to analyze situational needs and synergize with others to problem solve, often coming up with multiple solutions to a task. These skills are particularly critical in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Students of today need regular exposure to motivating materials and challenges that will develop these skills. The Canyon Ridge Library has already begun this transition to an environment that integrates technology and STEM challenges into the everyday experiences of our students. In the past four years library and district funds have been committed to the purchase of technology. The library has added iPads, Chromebooks, tablets, laptops, and an interactive SMART board. Through collaboration with the librarian and classroom teachers, students have engaged in science experiments and Makerspacetype lessons that challenge them to solve real world problems with their peers. The addition of Lego We-Do materials will expand this learning and provide highlymotivating, age-appropriate materials. Lego We-Do Construction provides opportunities for students to work with simple machines, motion concepts, and even biological models. Students will apply mathematical skills while measuring time

and distance, use basic operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as estimate and even explore with variables. From an engineering standpoint, students are expected to brainstorm, select appropriate materials, build, test, and evaluate and improve on their solutions and results to various challenges. And finally, students will learn and apply programming skills while using the included software, which allows them to design and create working models to test their hypotheses. While these Lego kits are available for teachers to use with an entire class experience, they will mainly be utilized by small groups of students before school and possibly within the school day for special incentives. Our library opens at 7:00 each morning and provides a safe place for students to be engaged with self-initiated learning before school. This time is available for all students, but most frequently used by students in grades 2-5. The addition of these materials will pull in a clientele of students that are motivated by hands-on learning. Mrs. Howk, the campus administrative team, and teachers in grades 2-5, will be identifying students in need of extra hands-on instruction in math and science that would benefit from the extra motivation of targeted time with the Lego materials. These students will receive a special invitation to join a group that works regularly with the kits. We hope you and your family will become involved with the many exciting programs at the CR Library as together we build leaders and readers. For more information, check out www.neisd.net/ canyon.

Acrobatic Gymnastics Of San Antonio Takes On The World! Submitted By Jacqueline Renteria hile most students are settling into their classrooms, a group of San Antonio’s own athletes are not only hitting the books, but also making national and international headlines. Why? Because these athletes are getting ready to take on the world! Recently, the athletes of Acrobatic Gymnastics of San Antonio (AGSA) attended the USA Gymnastics Championships in Greensboro, NC and brought home a host of awards! While approximately 2000 athletes nationwide attended this annual event, which included Rhythmic Gymnastics and Trampoline and Tumbling, over 800 athletes competed in the Acrobatic Gymnastics division. Senior Elite WP Jessica Renteria and Maren Merwarth, who won the bronze medal at the Varna World Cup in Bulgaria earlier this year and are currently ranked third in the World Cup Series, won the gold and were selected to the USA Senior National Team. They are the first USA Senior Elite Women’s Pair in acrobatic gymnastics history to medal at a World Cup. Junior Elite 1 2-18 Women’s Group Connie Kickirillo, Gabriela Foster, Alyssa Delgado won gold, Junior Elite 12-18 WP Thalia Berry and Aubrey Rosilier also won gold and Junior Elite 12-18 Mixed Pair Alex McGraw and Mady Marlow won the silver medal. By Stefanie Young unta Del Cielo is the definition of reinvented traditional coffee. From the first smell to the last sip, their espresso emanates superior quality. The shop is full of light and open space, with beautiful cups of layered coffee and locally made pastries on display. The ambiance they create is great for meeting with friends and relaxing, yet vibrant enough to get the creative juice flowing for a work project. “We take a lot of pride in what we do here,” stated Julian Cuevas. “Our philosophy is simple, respect the coffee. We offer drinks that are focused around the coffee flavors without adding the whipped toppings or flavored syrups. It’s simplicity at its best.” Many coffee drinkers can relate to the commercial drive-thru scene with its overpriced and over-complicated drink orders, especially when on the go. Yet, here in the heart of Stone Oak there’s a café that knows people crave that moment to themselves, where they can experience a refreshing setting to take a deep breath and freshly brewed beverage made to their liking. They offer a meeting room free of charge, seating throughout the café and a nook for chatting with friends or immersing yourself the latest novel off your summer

P

reading list. “We wanted to create an environment that invited people in,” explained Cuevas. “Whether it’s to hold your business meeting here, meet with friends or to get your work done, we’re here to provide the best coffee to complement those settings.” And in the end, it truly does come down to the coffee. With every drink, fresh coffee beans are ground and brewed to order. With 4 different house blends, the strength and taste of your order can change. “We offer 4 different levels that range from M1 to M4,” said Cuevas. “The most balanced flavor is our M3, but if you would like your coffee a bit stronger or lighter, we can customize the taste to your palette and preference.” Not only do they offer coffee to meet your liking, they also make the perfect espresso. Brewed at the perfect temperature with a correctly measured dose of ground coffee and with the right amount of crema. If you’ve never had perfect espresso, it’s an experience to be had. You can visit Punta Del Cielo at 115 N Loop 1604 E and try the refined coffee for yourself. If you would like to find out more about their products and brewing standards, give them a call at (210) 5493583 or visit their Facebook page at www. facebook.com/puntadelcielostoneoak.

Bush And Lopez At Annual Texas Bandmasters Convention Submitted By Kim Garza tudents from Bush and Lopez Middle School Honors Bands had the distinct privilege of performing at the 68th Annual Texas Bandmasters Association Convention held last week in downtown San Antonio at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The convention center was host to thousands of band directors, both middle and high school, from all over the state of Texas. The TBA convention provides professional development, professional performances and the latest products/materials/technology necessary for directors to continue to thrive in the profession of music education. Fifty student volunteers combined from both the Bush and Lopez Middle School Honors Bands were chosen to be a demonstration group for a clinic presentation at the annual convention by Mr. John Benzer, esteemed faculty member and band consultant from the University of Houston. The clinic presentation was entitled “Are You Ready for U.I.L. Contest?” and was designed to help Texas middle, junior and high school band directors successfully take a band through the UIL Concert and Sightreading process. Mr. Benzer is a highly sought after clinician/consultant in instrumental education, and has been working closely as a consultant to both of these Northeast band programs for several years now. The two programs were chosen because of the standards of excellence that have been an integral part of both the Bush and Lopez band programs. Students helped to put on

a fun and active display of the suggested “do’s and don’ts” at UIL contest. Directors of the Lopez band program are Mrs. Kim Garza and Ms. Jessica Powell, and the Bush Band is led by Mr. Gabriel Rosas and Mrs. Erin Sharkey. Mrs. Garza and Mr. Rosas were presented at the clinic with the esteemed “Certificate of Appreciation” plaques for participation in the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention. Garza and Rosas note that “they were honored and excited for their students to participate in a fun and educational presentation for directors of band programs all over the state.” They also add that “they are thankful to Mr. Benzer and TBA for allowing them to be a part of this special opportunity and helping to bring further notoriety to the Bush and Lopez band programs.”

Turning Smart but Struggling Students into Confident, Independent Learners

N

o parent wants to see their child suffer. Still, the parents of children with learning and attention challenges face this difficult situation on a daily basis. While they know their children are gifted, creative and intelligent, their constant battle with school starts to make it harder for their kids to cope. When something as simple as an hour of homework turns into a race against the clock, it can be frustrating and start to leave a mark on a child’s self-confidence. This is where Learning Foundations can help. They provide kids and teens that are smart, but struggling in school, with the tools needed to succeed and overcome their frustrations. Their programs focus on eliminating the pain of a smart child being wrongly labeled or not identified early, and work one-on-one with them to overcome underlying issues that are holding them back. “We help kids overcome learning and attention challenges” explained Rafael Scarnati, Director at Learning Foundation. “For parents who have a child that is struggling in school, or may have tried tutoring but sense that there may be an underlying problem, they would come to us and we would do an initial evaluation to find out the child’s strengths and weaknesses.” Based on the evaluation, the staff will put together an individualized program that will focus on using the child’s strengths to overcome challenges and work past their weaknesses. This model addresses the root causes of the learning problem and not just the symptoms In order to get to that point, the parent needs to recognize some of the warning signs. “Warning signs can come in a variety of forms. For Dyslexia there are a few signs, such as letter reversals after 1st grade, especially with the letters “b”, ”d”, ”p”, and “q”. Ear infections, left and right confusion, and difficulty learning to tie their shoes are signs as well,” said Rafael. “For attention and hyperactivity challenges, some of the early warning signs can show themselves through clumsiness, poor hand eye coordination, if they are oversensitive to certain sounds, if they have frequent headaches while at school, or if they complain about certain kind of fabrics or tags on their clothing. All of these are signs of possible attention issues.” The idea that there is a possible learning disability holding your child back can be overwhelming and leave you wondering where to start. Learning Foundations understands that although it is not a quick fix, scientific research has proven that the brain can be trained and learning challenges can be corrected for students at any age, given the right intervention. “Our assessment process always starts with a free parent seminar. It’s an information session where we talk about all the skills that are necessary to be successful in school and socially,” explained Scarnati. “It helps parents identify where they might see some gaps in their child and it also helps them understand that while schools can provide accommodations, they are not really equipped to correct those weak skills.” The skills Rafael is referring to are neuro-developmental and cognitive processing skills, such as auditory processing, body control and balance. These are things that schools expect children to have upon entering the classroom setting and therefore don’t usually have someone on staff to teach such skills. Most teachers really want to help their students succeed, but their hands are tied when it comes to making recommendations as to what might be wrong. Scarnati explained how he experienced first-hand what it was like to be a teacher without the training. “I used to be a middle school teacher and while I was teaching I had kids with dyslexia, ADHD, and other sensory issues in my class, but I did not know how to work with them,” he said. “I had no idea how to even identify if there was a problem or if they were just being lazy or acting out. We just didn’t get that kind of training.” Now that he works in a setting with kids that act out, he and the staff know that behavior is usually an indicator of an underlying challenge, whether it is with learning or with

We don’t have a one size fits all mentality. We don’t think that any single program is going to be the answer for everybody, so we work to truly tailor a program to the needs of the student.” – Leslie Jernigan Learning Foundation’s Center Director processing information. As a parent, it’s important to react to the signs sooner, rather than later, to help your child get the skills they need and to better your child’s chances for reaching his or her full potential. “It’s not that schools don’t want to help kids in need, but that they don’t have the resources on hand to do so. Teachers may suggest for a parent to wait until 2nd or 3rd grade but I would disagree,” Scarnati stated. “By that time kids have already developed frustrated behaviors and the self-image that they aren’t smart. The earlier they see a specialist, the less they will have to catch up or unlearn those behaviors.” Learning Foundations wants kids to be happy and healthy by reducing the chances of a poor self-image. The majority of the kids that walk through their doors have average to above average intelligence which can make it much more frustrating for the kids and the parents because they have kid that they see are visibly smart and completely capable but cannot read or cannot sit still in class. This scenario is one of many that can make a smart kid label themselves as lazy or “dumb”. The staff at Learning Foundations knows all too well what it’s like to see a kid taken over by what they have labeled themselves or been labeled as by their peers. What sets

Learning Foundations apart from other facilities is the way they handle each situation separately and individualize a plan for each child to work through the hardships. “Because we are not a franchise, we have the flexibility and ability to incorporate different programs and practices that address each individual need,” Said Scarnati. “Everything that we do is one-on-one; everyone who works with our students has at least a bachelor’s degree and has worked with kids. And of course, all of our recommendations are based off of solid research.” “We don’t have a one size fits all mentality,” added Leslie Jernigan, another director at Learning Foundations, “We don’t think that any single program is going to be the answer for

www.welcomehomesa.com

everybody, so we work to truly tailor a program to the needs of the student.” They use state of the art technology and tools that incorporate rhythmic based and multisensory approaches to learning that assist in focus and brain training. For parents not wanting to face the challenge with their child this summer, Learning Foundations offers summer intensive classes to help kids gain the skills they need before the coming school year and offer long term help during the year depending on the child’s needs. “If I were to paint a before and after picture I would do it best by repeating the conversation Gisele and I had last night,” Said Candice Escobedo, a parent to one of the students. “After reading 3 stories in a row and decoding words like “revolving”, “escalator”, and “department” my heart was overflowing with joy. What [Learning Foundations] has given my daughter is worth so much more than money. Confidence, happiness, independence are only a few attributes that Gisele has gained in the short months that we have been here.” Not only that, they just opened a new location in Boerne at 215 W. Bandera Rd., Suite# 105. They have also opened a new phone line at 1-844-TX-LEARN. Scarnati also offers weekly homework tips via email. If you would like to receive those emails and find out more information about Learning Foundations and their programs, visit them at www. learningfoundations.com.

Back To School Backpack Blues

W

By Steven Tham, MS, DC, PhD (c) Legend Physical Therapy (210) 375-4191

ith the school year underway for many students, parents are busily trying to assemble all the supplies their child may need. In the past years, attention has turned to backpacks and how they affect your child’s back and posture, but did you know that backpacks can trigger long lasting problems? Believe it or not, the body is an amazing machine and often the person never seems to feel any problems, especially when they are younger. Sports and playground injuries are often shaken off and for the most part we recover quite well. One problem, however

that is difficult to recovery from, and starts early in life, is bad posture. Injuries resulting from poor posture are very common and in 15+ years of practice, it is probably the number one cause of back and neck pain. In fact, poor posture may not only be a cause of pain, but often can contribute to more serious injuries when they occur. Why is posture is such a serious problem? The spine, including the hips, is like a tower which is built to support weight. In proper posture, all the weight above the feet is appropriately distributed such that each one supports the one above; like a

Jenga game. As posture degrades, it’s like pulling the support system so eventually the tower of Jenga blocks are wobbly and no longer able to maintain its structure. So what about the backpack? According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), an incorrectly worn backpack can lead to “severe back, neck and shoulder pain, as well as posture problems.” This occurs because overloaded backpacks or those with long, loose straps shift weight away from the spine, decreasing its natural loading over the hips. When heavy packs are used, or long loose straps are used, weight is transferred behind the center of gravity of the spine, resulting in forward leaning to try to keep weight centered. This throws off our posture, creating potential for increased fatigue and other potential injuries.

When looking for a backpack, we recommend two wide, padded shoulder straps, a padded back, a waist strap and as light as possible. One more important note from our friends at the AAOS is that, “the weight of the loaded backpack should be less than 10-15% of a child’s body weight.” Though the lazy summer days might be coming to end, don’t let it be the start of another posture pounding school year. Award for Outstanding Service: Burn and Blast Trauma Survivors

Submitted By Deborah Ortiz de la Peña celity, a global wound care and regenerative medicine company, awarded the first-ever Carole Lanham Award to Texas-based charity, The Moonlight Fund Inc., for its outstanding service to burn and blast patients and their families. The award was presented to Celia Belt, co-founder of The Moonlight Fund Inc. on July 28, 2015, at Acelity headquarters in San Antonio, Texas. The Acelity Carole Lanham Award recognizes organizations that have excelled in improving patient lives by providing holistic support to trauma survivors. The creation of this award expands on the Acelity Servant’s Heart Foundation mission to offer financial assistance to charitable organizations in need. The $2,500 grant will be awarded annually and was created in honor of Carole Lanham, who recently retired after working for more than 23 years at Acelity. Carole has served in various capacities on the Servant’s Heart Foundation Board since its inception in 2003, actively sponsored numerous grant applications on behalf of many small and medium-sized organizations around the country, and personally volunteered hundreds of hours supporting the Servant’s Heart Foundation to improve the lives of children and people in need.

“Carole has been instrumental in the establishment and maintenance of the Servant’s Heart Foundation, which is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, funded and managed by Acelity employees,” said Michelle Peterson, Servant’s Heart Foundation President. “The Servant’s Heart Foundation encourages our employees to get involved with the local community and has benefited many organizations, such as The Moonlight Fund, with programs primarily emphasizing children, education and health care.” Acelity and The Moonlight Fund have worked together since the Fund’s inception in 1998. “Acelity has been an important partner for The Moonlight Fund since the beginning,” commented Celia Belt. “We are very honored to have been chosen as the recipient of the Carole Lanham Award. Carole is a good friend, and Acelity has always supported our quest to help burn and blast survivors and their families. This scholarship will allow us to help more patients in need.” For almost 20 years, The Moonlight Fund Inc. has relied on local and global companies like Acelity to gather the necessary funds to help military and civilian burn and blast survivors and their families. Get To Know The 2015-16 Reagan Twirlers Submitted By Melissa Volz e kick off the Rattler Season with profiles of our Reagan High School Twirlers. Congratulations to the 2015-2016 Reagan Twirlers, Kenlynn Volz, Ashlyn Morris and Hannah Watson! Meet our Reagan Rattler Twirlers: Kenlynn Volz (Junior) - Feature Twirler What is your twirling experience? I have been twirling for about 6 years, and this is my second year twirling as a feature twirler at Reagan High School. In addition to my halftime and pep rally performances, I have also performed in a number of parades this year including the Fiesta Battle of Flowers parade and the Windcrest 4th of July Celebration Parade. I have competed in many local twirling competitions. This past year I competed in UIL Regional and UIL State competitions as well as the NBTA (National Baton Twirling Association) State twirling competition where I was awarded 1st place in state solo and 2nd place in state two-baton. To prepare for my many performances and competitions, I participate in the South Texas Camp of Champions twirling summer camp as well as weekly lessons with the Alamo City Strutters and daily practice. Tell us why you chose to be a twirler? At a young age, I went to many of my older cousins’ football games where I became a fan of watching high school twirlers perform during halftime and I decided I would like to one day be a twirler too.

W

I look forward to being the face of the Reagan Band and twirling with Ashlyn and Hannah who I feel will make this year great! Ashlyn Morris (Sophomore) What is your twirling background? I have been twirling for about 9 years. This past year I competed in local twirling competitions, UIL Regional and UIL State. I participated in 2 South Texas Camp of Champions twirling camps this past year. Why did you choose to be a twirler? One day at school they handed out a flyer to get an introduction to what twirling is all about. I decided to go because I was not involved in any other sports at that time. When I went I loved everything about it so I decided to become a twirler. I look forward to being given the opportunity to represent the amazing Ronald Reagan marching band this year. I also look forward to becoming a stronger and better twirler. Hannah Watson (Freshman) What is your twirling background? I have been twirling for two and a half years. This past summer I participated in the South Texas Camp of Champions twirling camp. What are your goals as a twirler for this year? My goals are to work hard so that I will be able to compete at a higher level and to find opportunities to minister to others through twirling. I am really excited to twirl at the football games with the band and at Disney World this spring. I’m also looking forward to handing out batons and talking to younger

Reagan HS Choir: Singing Through “Switzerly”

St. Peter’s Basilica altar, The Vatican, Rome, Italy.

The Arch of Constantine, in the shadow of the Coliseum in Ancient Rome.

Submitted By Lisa Johnson lmost as soon as school ended in June, 70 Reagan choir kids, along with their 70 dedicated choir directors, parents, families and tour guides, were flying over the Atlantic Ocean together on a musical journey of a lifetime! The tour began in Lucerne, Switzerland and ended in Rome, Italy with stops along the way in Milan, Siena and Florence. The choir performed flash mob-style in some amazing indoor and outdoor venues, including atop Mount Pilatus in the Alps, the Pantheon in Rome, and the Piazza della Signoria in Florence. Formal concerts were held at Basilica of Santa Maria del Santo Spirito in Florence and St. Paul’s Within the Walls in Rome, where the choir had the privilege of singing in a combined concert with the Royal Holloway Founder’s Choir from London.

A

The pinnacle of the trip was when the choir had the great honor of singing a Mass inside of St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican in Rome. It was a remarkable experience in an incomparable setting – something these kids (and their parents) will remember forever. The final group dinner was a bittersweet time as everyone shared a tasty Italian meal together, serenaded by two very entertaining Italian singers and an accordionist. At the behest of our rowdy bunch (chanting, “Mary, Ma-ry, Ma-ry”), Ms. Cowart finally relented and sang a lovely tune, accompanied by the accordion. The tear-jerker ending came when the kids sang, “The Lord Bless You and Keep You” for Ms. Cowart and Mr. DLC one last time. A few other trip treasures: selfie stick anyone?, gelato…yum!, walking (lots of walking), uber skilled bus drivers, rehearsal on the double-decker bus, Paprika Pringles,

College Tutors Educator Of The Month By Steve Johnson, Owner of College Nannies + Tutors t is our pleasure to begin this school year by highlighting and recognizing a local educator as the College Tutors Educator of the Month for September. This award, made with input from the school administration, recognizes educators in our area high schools that personify the three core values of College Tutors: Can Do Attitudes, Growth and Results Driven and Leave It Better. This month’s recognition for Reagan High School goes to Val Sisson. She performed yeoman’s work over the course of the summer. During the summer break, Reagan High School did not have a cheer coach and had the added turmoil of two assistant Principals moving on to do different things. Val gave of her time and talents to assure that students were taken care of, parents received communication, and all responsibilities were performed. She sets the example of a can do attitude and leaving it better by giving of herself unselfishly for the benefit of all students. The owners of College Nannies + Tutors of San Antonio established this recognition with the support of Welcome Home Community Newspaper to recognize and honor the educators in our schools for their efforts with our local students. The quality of education in our community is primarily a direct reflection of their daily efforts as role models for our students. For more information on this award, or to submit a

Reagan Football Working Hard For The Community Submitted By Denise Jones aking time out of their busy summers, the Ronald Reagan High School Freshman, JV and Varsity football teams continued the Rattler tradition of giving back to the local San Antonio community. Summer service projects included working for Habitat for Humanity as well as the San Antonio Food Bank. The team arrived at Coleman Ridge on the wet morning of June 19th and labored thru the mud at the Habitat community. Teamwork was used to complete tasks such as cleaning and weeding empty lots, installing moisture barriers on house frames, and installing siding. In addition, on July 15th the team volunteered at the Food Bank where they sorted through over 16,000 lbs. of canned food and nearly 12,000 lbs. of frozen/pre-packaged food. All together the Rattlers were responsible for processing food that will provide approximately 21,739 meals to people across San Antonio. The Reagan High School football team is honored to partner with these organizations. When complete, Habitat for Humanity will have built 185 homes in the Coleman Ridge for low-income families in
