Rickenbacker Causeway: Named after WW1 ace pilot Eddie Rickenbacker. He later became the president of Eastern Air Lines, which was based in Miami. Killian Drive: Named for pioneer Dan Killian, who had a country store south of what is now Coral Gables, and was responsible for the first schools, streetlights and churches in this area. Don Shula Expressway: Don Shula is the coach of the Miami Dolphins to many; no matter who else has held the job since his retirement in 1997. Shula holds the coaching record for most wins in the NFL (347), and coached the 1972 Miami Dolphins, the only team in NFL history to play a perfect 16-0 season and win the Super Bowl.

ake a moment to look at our map on pages 44-45 and get familiar with the major Miami roadways. Streets and Terraces generally run east-west. Avenues, Places, Roads and Courts are aligned north-south. But look carefully in other areas that have their own street systems: Hialeah, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Opa Locka, Key Biscayne and Miami Beach. Miami is divided into four sections, with Flagler Street marking the north and south sectors, and Miami Avenue dividing the city into east and west.
North-South
• I-95 is the major north-south expressway that provides access to all of South Florida, and continues all the way north to Maine! • U.S.1 is a main thoroughfare throughout South Florida. From downtown Miami to NE 213 Street in northern Miami-Dade County, it is called Biscayne Blvd. In parts of Broward County, it is called Federal Hwy. Going south, U.S.1 continues to the Florida Keys. • Florida’s Turnpike extends north to Orlando and Central Florida from State Road 836 in the southwest part of Miami. The Homestead Extension of the Turnpike is located in the western part of the county and continues south until it merges with U.S.1 in Homestead. This is a toll road; $1.25 eastbound, $1 with SunPass. • From Kendall to the northern part of Miami, State Road 826 (Palmetto Expressway) runs north-south, then runs east-west, connecting with I-95 at the Golden Glades Interchange in North Miami. • A1A (called Collins Avenue in Miami Beach) runs north-south for 52 miles, paralleling Florida’s beaches along the east coast.
East-West
• State Road 836 (Dolphin Expressway) is the major east-west expressway connecting Florida’s Turnpike (Homestead Extension) to State Road 826, I-95 and Miami Beach via I-395. Toll: $2.25 eastbound; $2 with SunPass. • State Road 112 leads to/from Miami International Airport, to/from I-95, and to Miami Beach via I-195. Metromover is an automated people-mover system that serves downtown Miami from Omni to Brickell, and connects with Metrorail at Government Center and Brickell stations. It connects with Metrobus at the Omni, Government Center and Brickell stations. In addition, several bus routes operate close to most of the 20 Metromover stations, one about every two blocks. Metromover’s inner and outer (Omni and Brickell) loops run from 5am-midnight, seven days a week, with service often extended during special events. Trains arrive frequently. Fare: free.
For express bus service from the Miami International Airport to Miami Beach at a bargain price, check out the Airport Flyer (Bus Route 150), which departs from the bus bay area of the Miami International Airport Metrorail station, and runs daily from 6am-11:30pm. This express service offers free Wi-Fi for the ride and plenty of space for luggage. Fare: $2.35 each way.
The EASY Card is a durable, plastic, reloadable card that allows for the purchase of one-day, seven-day or monthly fare amounts, or a fixed amount. Balance protection is available in case of loss or theft. The card has an initial $2 charge. Purchase by calling the EASY Card Center at 786-469-5151. The EASY Ticket is also reloadable, but expires after 60 days from the date of purchase. The EASY Ticket cannot be purchased or reloaded online or by phone. The 7 Day Pass, which can be added to an EASY Card or an EASY Ticket, offers unlimited access to all Miami-Dade County public transportation for seven consecutive days for $26.
On Miami Beach, try the South Beach Local (Bus Route 123), for an easy way to get around! It runs every 13-20 minutes daily. See page 48 for routes and schedule. Fare: 25¢ per ride. The City of Miami Trolley has four routes that take passengers to many of the city’s best neighborhoods, including Brickell, downtown and midtown, and attractions such as Bayside Marketplace and Vizcaya Museum & Gardens. Metrorail, Miami-Dade County’s 25-mile, elevated rapid-transit system, runs from the Kendall area in the southern end of the county north to the city of Medley. Its 23 stations provide connections to major businesses and cultural and shopping centers. Riders also can transfer to Tri-Rail at the Tri-Rail Metrorail station and travel north to Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Metrorail riders must use an EASY Card or EASY Ticket, as faregates do not accept cash. All Metrorail trains have free Wi-Fi. Metrorail operates daily, 5am-midnight. On weekdays, trains arrive approximately every 10 minutes during rush hours, every 15 minutes at midday, and every 30 minutes from about 8pm-midnight. On weekends, trains run approximately every 30 minutes. Parking is available at 18 stations for $4 daily, including weekends and holidays. An EASY Card or EASY Ticket is required to ride the Metrorail. Fare: $2 per ride.
SunPass offers a convenient, pre-paid option for most tolls in Florida, at a discounted rate. It is required to use the new Express Lanes (the two left lanes) on I-95 in Miami-Dade County, both north and southbound. All tolls going from Miami-Dade County south to the Florida Keys are SunPass only. SunPass is already in most rental cars and taxis, and is available for sale online. Metrobus provides daily bus service throughout MiamiDade County. Service is available from Miami Beach and Key Biscayne on the east side of the county, to Kendall and Westchester on the west end, and from as far north as the city of Hallandale Beach in Broward County, to as far south as the middle Florida Keys. Metrobus operates seven days a week and several routes run 24 hours a day. The system, designed to intersect with Metrorail and Metromover, serves all major businesses, shopping, entertainment and cultural centers and major hospitals. All buses are wheelchair-accessible. Bus to bus transfers are free with the EASY Card or EASY Ticket. Metrobus fareboxes accept cash. Fare: $2 each way.

Safe Sunning Tips
South Florida’s sun is inviting, but it’s easy to get too much of a good thing. Here are some tips to help you enjoy the sun without getting burned. These guidelines are based on a scale that assigns a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) to measure the degree to which a substance will block the ultraviolet rays that cause sunburn. It is important to use a sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.
Surfside
Two of the standout attractions of the quiet, family-oriented Surfside neighborhood are the shops and the picturesque secluded beach that is bordered by a path through the sand dunes. Rejuvenated hotels and new luxury condominiums in Surfside are changing the style of Collins Avenue, but Harding Avenue retains the feel of an old-style Main Street with small shops and bistros. This state park provides an abundance of recreational activities including canoeing, swimming, boating and picnicking. For those interested in South Florida’s underwater beauty, this park has one of the easiest and most interesting shore dives in the area. Open daily, 8am-sunset. Hollywood Beach
Hollywood’s miles of beautiful beaches are fringed by boutique shopping, dining, nightlife and the charming historic district. • Always swim in a guarded area. Stay within the swim area boundaries. Don’t swim where surfers are active.
• Pay attention to posted flags. There are flags posted on all lifeguard towers in Miami Beach. • Rip currents or riptides are strong currents that can carry even the most experienced swimmer out to sea. If you get caught in a rip current, don’t panic. Swim parallel to the shoreline until you’re out of the rip current, then swim towards shore. In 1981, Miami-Dade County initiated an artificial reef program, and in 1998 established the South Beach Underwater Park, located 200 yards east of the beach between 1 and 5 Streets. The purpose was to expand the fish habitat while providing near-shore snorkeling and diving opportunities. One such opportunity, a 22-ton concrete margarita bar rests in 20-feet of water, just 100 yards east of Nikki Beach Club.

Scuba divers have a variety of sites in deeper water, from the Tortuga, an intact freighter sitting upright in 110-feet of water to a pair of army tanks sitting in less than 50-feet of water east of the Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel on 44 Street. I knew Miami Beach was a very special place the first time I visited eight years ago. In addition to its beautiful surroundings, I experienced freedom in a way I hadn’t since becoming disabled. Leaving my hotel unescorted, with book in hand and thoughts of an espresso milling around my brain, I was overcome with a sense of joy for the long lost autonomy I was experiencing. I ventured up Miami Beach’s famous Collins Avenue in my wheelchair and everything appeared more beautiful as I realized streets could be easily crossed because of predictable and uniform ramping, audible pedestrian signals and plentiful accessible bathrooms! One of the main reasons visitors come to Miami is to enjoy the beautiful beaches. Those of us who depend on a wheelchair for mobility, know they don’t move too well in sand. Check with your hotel concierge who may be able to provide you with the rental of a beach wheelchair specifically designed for our sandy beaches. You may also contact DMR at 305-666-9911 to purchase or rent a beach wheelchair. See ad on page 20 for additional information. At no additional charge, they can provide transportation from the airport directly to DMR, and then to your hotel. This world class city has many venues for fine and performing arts, and hosts one of the two Art Basel events in the world. The Design District and Wynwood neighborhoods and ArtCenter/ South Florida (800 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach, Map I-13) have ongoing art events and shows featuring different themes from local, national and international artists. The city of Miami itself hosts the exciting Food Network South Beach Food & Wine Festival (February), and the Miami International Film Festival (March) affords many opportunities to see unique films and attend question and answer sessions with actors, producers and directors. Much awareness has been brought about in recent years by a citywide event called Ability Explosion, a weeklong event in October featuring “Dining in the Dark” as one of its most popular events. In addition, almost every restaurant in Miami Beach is accessible for wheelchair use and many have a heightened awareness of the obstacles faced by those with vision limitations.
There is truly something for everyone in Miami, and a plethora of activities are available to those of varied physical abilities. The outdoors and watersports make the most of Miami’s beautiful surrounding waters, and some activities are even suited to the disabled traveler.
Miami-Dade County Public Transit buses are available to take visitors around Miami Beach, downtown and to/from the airport. A helpful, and free, iPhone, iPad and Android app called “Miami-Dade Transit Tracker” also provides bus routes, stops and times.
