"Learning from John Portman" is a graphic novel -or more precisely an 'Archicomic'- about not only architecture but also the architect himself. John C. Portman's intentions and his achievements as one of the most successful and pioneer architect/developers of his time are the starting point and the main focus of this narrative.

In this regard, this mini-novel will take a look at the ZIN project, a dazzling, modern, innovative reconstruction project by the owner of WTC towers to also revitalize the district. A fundamental question will be asked: Are the ZIN project and its Greenhouse supposed to be a space for everyone to use?

It seems that despite all the efforts that have been made, there is still a long way to go to reach the desired point: Both for residents and for architects. Perhaps now is the time for architects to take on their new role, actively enter the field of action, and use their knowledge and rely on their social role to help society and citizens. Even with the construction of the ZIN, many troubles and problems will remain in the area. Transmigrants, the rest of the half-empty buildings, unsafe and secluded streets at night... But architects can shape the future in a different way, by learning from what’s going on in the design process of that project, as well as taking advantage of the victories and failures of architects/ developers like John Portman.
