If crisp evenings are more your thing, there are a huge range of outdoor activities best experienced at this time of the year. Autumn is also a great time to get out and explore Yorkshire’s magnificent coastline and award-winning beaches. The dramatic seas turn from gentle calm waters to waves that are a surfer’s paradise! The 350 mile Trans Pennine Trail takes walkers on old railway lines and canal paths and weaves in and out of Yorkshire’s major urban cities – it’s up to you how far you want to go. In Wensleydale, the Cotter Force waterfall can be found in a secluded woodland with a path along the beck, which is suitable for wheelchairs. We’re lucky to have three national parks, with coastal cliffs and rolling heather moorland in the North York Moors, gentle valleys and some of the finest limestone scenery in the UK in the Yorkshire Dales and rugged gritstone in the Peak District. All of these offer a chance to see autumn in a very different way. Explore four of Britain’s finest National Trails here in Yorkshire. The Cleveland Way follows the edge of the North York Moors National Park from Helmsley to the dramatic coast. The Yorkshire Wolds Way rambles through peaceful fields and over gentle chalk-hills. For something more strenuous, the Pennine Way strides through the Yorkshire Dales on its mammoth journey from the Peak District to Scotland. Or maybe the purpose built Pennine Bridleway is your kind of walk?

YORKSHIRE.COM/OUTDOORS

Head inland to enjoy more of Yorkshire’s magnificent countryside as the colours of the landscape change to earthy autumnal tones. Coastal havens such as Robin Hood’s Bay and Sandsend have been established as an out of season getaway for a number of years but now bigger resorts such as Scarborough and Whitby have plenty to offer all year round and are great destinations for an autumnal walk along the promenade! For those looking for a more active day out this autumn, cycling is the perfect solution. Choose from the Way of the Roses, a coast to coast cycle route linking Bridlington to Morecambe via the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, York and the Wolds or the Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Route along the enchanted rolling hills and coastal cliffs. But there are many others definitely worth checking out, and as Yorkshire gears up to host the Tour de France Grand Départ, which starts in the county in Leeds on 5th July 2014, what better time to start exploring the routes than this autumn?

WINTER GUIDE

FREE AVAILABLE IN NOVEMBER

Clockwise from left: Christmas in Leeds. Snow on the Yorkshire Dales. The cellarium at Fountains Abbey.

Looking ahead to winter It’s the most wonderful time of the year, to spend in one of the most wonderful places in the world. It’s a time for romantic breaks away in luxury lodges and cosy cottages in stunning locations, for trips to historic pubs in hidden valleys, for wrapping up warm on frosty walks through the forest, for cuddling up next to an open fire and for spending time with the family.

Crisp clean air, quiet roads, stunning scenery and great attractions are just a few reasons to visit Yorkshire this winter. It’s also a great time to explore Yorkshire’s atmospheric villages and cities, relax and do a bit of shopping. Browse an antique shop or art gallery, pop into a local restaurant or amble around the local museum. Leading up to Christmas, Yorkshire lights up with fantastic illuminations. Stately homes with their great halls bedecked with festive decorations open their doors and around the county food festivals give you a chance to sample the local seasonal fare. As the light fades, it’s time for late nights at the theatre and choir services in the magnificent York Minster, for huddling close on ghost walks and fine dining in restaurants full of Christmas cheer. And don’t forget New Year - as Yorkshire comes alive with celebrations, fireworks and parties in every corner of the county.
