WOODMAN INN

High Street, Scalby, Scarborough, North Yorkshire YO13 0PT

Yorkshire puts the heart and soul into Britain’s pub culture – top-class food, a huge range of locally produced ales and fine wines from across the world. Not to mention the roaring fires, beautiful beer gardens and great company.

If you are looking to combine a truly great day out with a fascinating insight into the workings of a Victorian Brewery then look no further than Theakston’s famous Masham Brewery. Considered an icon in the British Brewing world, the ‘new’ brewery was completed in 1875 and has been in constant use ever since. It is here where the world famous Old Peculier is brewed alongside their other award winning ales! Some of the vessels have been in use since the brewery was first built all those years ago. And if

that were not enough there is also the only remaining full-time working craft cooperage left in the Country, where wooden casks are made from pieces of oak crafted into the finished item. If you don’t see the Master Cooper, Jonathan Manby, you may see his apprentice, Euan Findlay, beavering away at his ‘Block’ or ‘Bick Iron’. The Black Bull in Paradise Brewery Tap & Gift Shop are open daily form 10.30am. A most ‘Peculier’ welcome awaits.

THE ROYAL OAK

T: 01484 605 778 W: www.woodman-inn.com

36 Kirkgate, Ripon, North Yorkshire HG4 1PB

From humble beginnings as an 18th Century drinking inn, The Woodman Inn has provided sustenance to thousands of travellers in a tranquil, rural location in the tiny hamlet of Thunderbridge, near Huddersfield. This historic village lies within a conservation area, and the hamlet was originally believed to have been named after “Th (e)” under bridge, to distinguish it from a second bridge further up the valley. The first landlord was one Henry Wickman,

and in a nod to our historic heritage, we named one of our beautiful bedrooms “The Wickman Suite”. Jump forward 300 years and The Woodman has been transformed into a 21st century pub/restaurant/ hotel which prides itself on serving fresh local produce, perfectly cooked and served by our friendly and knowledgeable staff. Downstairs our traditional pub offers an extensive selection of award-winning cask ales and superb choice of fine wines.

You’ll soon discover that its reputation as a Timothy Taylor pub, for offering the best in food, drink and service is well founded. Look forward to a menu that combines old favourites and exciting new dishes with everything made using locally sourced ingredients. Not forgetting an equally impressive selection of cask ales and handpicked wines.

TOWN HALL TAVERN

15

A family-run business founded in 2005. All our beers are brewed, bottled and branded high on the Pennine moorland of Cragg Vale, just outside Hebden Bridge. Oh, and if you’re curious – it’s not little at all. It’s actually quite big. 968 feet ish. Using traditional techniques to create original beers, each and every one 100% vegan-friendly and all but a few certified organic. A combination of old methods and new ideas help deliver a range that’s natural, unique and perfectly balanced.

TIMOTHY TAYLOR’S - A PROUD HISTORY OF BREWING

18

T: 01535 603 139 W: www.timothytaylor.co.uk In 1858 Timothy Taylor began brewing beer in Keighley. He struck upon a successful formula and in 1863 set up and built a larger brewery at Knowle Spring, where the company has remained ever since. The brewery remains in the Taylor family and is now the last independent brewery of its type left in West Yorkshire. We can’t put the unique taste of Timothy Taylor’s beer down to any single thing. It’s the result of years of

hard work, skill and doing things the hard way because we think it makes the difference. Taking extra time, care and pride in traditional, hands-on brewing, and making no compromise when it comes to ingredients. It’s all for that taste of Taylor’s. Every one of Timothy Taylor’s twenty pubs has a character of its own where you can enjoy a warm welcome, wellkept beer and cosy surroundings.

Yorkshire is famous for many things – a warm welcome, breathtaking beauty and, of course, its pubs! To celebrate our pubs, we launched the search to find ‘Yorkshire’s Favourite Pub 2017’. With support from the Yorkshire Post, we asked people to vote for their favourite – and why. After hundreds of pubs were nominated and thousands of votes cast, we arrived at the 30 most popular which now feature in this ale trail. They are excellent examples of the vast array of great pubs across Yorkshire, whether it’s a traditional local or a cutting edge gastro pub, Yorkshire has it all.
