WILD WALKS Yorkshire is well-known for its breathtaking scenery and spectacular views, but did you know it’s also a great place to see some of the world’s most fascinating and exotic wildlife?
Beacon Alpacas
If you’re looking for something different, an Alpaca Walk is definitely one to add to the list! Hike amongst the Hambleton Hills with the Beacon Alpacas and learn more about these colourful characters. Originally bred for their fibrous fleeces, you can also pick up a pair of alpaca socks whilst you’re there. Or why not try out a trek with llamas, the larger cousin of the camelid family at Nidderdale Llamas. They offer a wide-range of llama treks and experiences that cater for all ages from 7 onwards.

The Deep is an award-winning submarium, home to over 3,500 fish including sharks and rays, as well as Loggerhead sea turtles and Gentoo penguins. Watch divers hand feed the animals, and look out for touch pool sessions in Discovery Corner. With three eateries and a picnic area, you will find all the ingredients for a fun day out for all the family. Head further up the coast to Scarborough’s Sea Life Sanctuary, a journey from the coastline to the ocean via 12 themed zones. With Humboldt penguins, otters and Yorkshire’s only Seal Hospital, this attraction certainly has the ‘ah’ factor. The newly opened Octopus Hideout will captivate curious minds.

SPECIAL EXPERIENCES Wildlife enthusiasts should head to RSPB Bempton Cliffs near Bridlington to find all sorts of autumnal activity going on. Short-eared owls start arriving for winter, as well as willow warblers, chiffchaffs, whitethroats, reed warblers, goldcrests, stonechats and many more. October is peak time to witness the winter thrush arrival, and offshore, movements of seabirds may be seen in ideal weather conditions. Harewood House has been home to Red Kites since 1999, when they were released onto the estate as part of a UK conservation initiative. Take a wander through the Bird Garden to see over 30 birds from around the world, including flamingos, owls, macaws, cockatoos and penguins.

The animal kingdom doesn’t get much more exotic than at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster. Lions, tigers, rhinos and polar bears are only the tip of the iceberg! If all that doesn’t give you enough to do this autumn, the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust cares for 104 nature reserves in Yorkshire, including iconic sites such as Spurn National Nature Reserve, Staveley Nature Reserve, Potteric Carr and Flamborough Cliffs. BRONTË COUNTRY
Set against the stunning landscape of the Yorkshire moors in the picturesque village of Haworth, the Haworth Parsonage was the home of the Brontë family from 1820 to 1861 and the place where the family penned their famous novels.
Now the Brontë Parsonage Museum, it houses the world’s largest collection of Brontë furniture, clothes and personal possessions and offers an inspirational and evocative experience for people of all ages. 2017 marks the bicentenary year of Patrick Branwell Brontë, the charismatic and complicated brother of Charlotte, Emily and Anne. Although he was often overshadowed by his

famous sisters, Branwell played an integral part in the lives of the Brontë family and showed great potential in his early years as an artist and writer. Branwell’s complex relationship with his sisters was recently highlighted in the critically acclaimed BBC drama ‘To Walk Invisible’. In celebration of Branwell’s 200th birthday, the Brontë Parsonage Museum is hosting an exhibition based on the

programme called ‘To Walk Invisible: From Parsonage to Production.’ This is an opportunity to see the costumes worn in the drama, as well as various props created especially for it, and a selection of stills offering a behind-the-scenes look at the film-making process.
TREASURE TROVE ‘Mansions in the Sky’ is another new and fascinating exhibition which sees Yorkshire-born poet Simon Armitage invite us inside the mind and world of the notorious Brontë brother to find out more about who he really was. The museum’s treasure trove of family belongings has inspired Armitage to write a series of new poems. You can also view the original letter Branwell sent to William Wordsworth, a now famous artefact

based on the fact Wordsworth never sent him a reply. Why not follow in the footsteps of Charlotte, Emily and Anne by attending a special event at the Brontë Festival of Women’s Writing? ‘Getting yourself out there! Self-publishing and Self-Promotion’ is a free-to-attend discussion about alternative methods of publishing. Hosted by leading female academics and novelists, this event will look at self-promotion and how to gain a loyal audience of readers. ‘Brontë Treasures’ is the ultimate experience for true fans of this famous literary Yorkshire family. A special hour-long session with a member of the curatorial team allows visitors a close-up view of items not on display, as well as a chance to hear facts and stories that offer a specialist insight in to the lives and work of the brilliant Brontës. Aysgarth Falls is a perfect place to walk any time of year. Used as the backdrop in the blockbuster movie Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, it has become one of Wensleydale’s most famous beauty spots. There are three breathtaking triple flights of waterfalls to enjoy, so make sure you leave enough time to appreciate all this walk has to offer.
The City Walls of York are the most complete example of medieval city walls still standing in England today. Beneath the medieval stonework lie the remains of earlier walls dating as far back as the Roman period. Today you can enjoy a circular two mile walk around the walls taking in the world-class gothic cathedral; York Minster.

Enjoy a spooktacular week of fun at Bolton Abbey this Halloween. Follow the trail of oversized pumpkins through Strid Wood and discover the mystery doors hidden among the trees. Behind each door is a clue to help unravel the witches magical spell.

WORTH THE WALK
AMAZING VIEWS
Head to Langsett Reservoir on the edge of the Peak District National Park where there is a steady climb from the top of the reservoir to a turn on the moor. The views are well worth the walk. Come and explore one of the great country houses of England at Temple Newsam. Set within a Capability Brown landscape and surrounded by beautiful parkland. Meander down to the three lakes and the Walled Garden on the famous six mile circular walk around the estate before enjoying a well deserved cup of tea and slice of cake at the café. Author James Herriot once claimed the White Horse in Kilburn as the finest view in England. One of the best ways to take in this view is along the White Horse Walk. The classic three mile walk starts from Sutton Bank National Park Visitor Centre.
If you can’t decide between dramatic coastline or heather moorland, then the 109 mile long Cleveland Way which combines both is your perfect trail. With fabulous views, castles, ancient stone crosses and fishing villages tucked into tiny coves, it has the lot. If you want to spot some wildlife whilst out and about this season, head to one of Yorkshire’s many RSPB sites. At St Aidan’s Nature Park near Leeds, the main trails take you amongst a variety of habitats including reedbed, wetland, meadows and woodland. At Fairburn Ings near Castleford the three main trails take you through a variety of habitats allowing stunning views of birds. In winter, Fairburn hosts an array of swans, ducks and geese on the main lake, so there is something to see whatever the season.

Autumn is the time of year for pottering around the shops and ducking out of the fresh weather at a moment’s notice. And when you’re all done in, a local coffee shop, tearoom or even a horsebox can offer the perfect spot. Spend an afternoon with the paper, friends or with a big slice of cake on a lazy afternoon.
HIDDEN GEMS If you are feeling a bit more active and plan to head out on your bike this autumn then a great place to stop off is The Ramblers Rest in Millington, East Yorkshire. Catering for all, they are especially welcoming to cyclists who’ve headed out onto the wolds. This is a fabulous place to grab tea and a scone and relax in a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Or there’s Your Bike Shed in York, where they will fix your bike for you whilst you hang out and have a tasty cup of coffee with some tempting and nutritious food. At Your Bike Shed they want you to feel right at home with or without two wheels, so as long as you enjoy good coffee and cake, you are very welcome. With the sun low and bright, Yorkshire is beautiful at this time of year. Have your sunglasses, brollies, wellies and maybe even shorts all at the ready. Head out with the family to one of Yorkshire’s fine villages and wander through the streets enjoying the last few days of warm weather. The Curious Table is an ideal place to rest after a day of meandering through the rural market town of Easingwold. Famous for their brownies and warm welcome as well as their quirky interiors, it’s worth a visit to the town just

Whilst you are exploring North Yorkshire head over to the market town of Richmond where the boutique shops, bustling market, Richmond Waterfalls and Castle leave you spoilt for choice. During the remaining warmer days, visit Tong Garden Centre in Bradford. With a Tea Room on site it’s the perfect place to find the balance between shopping and plenty of cups and tea. Whilst you’re there why not get inspired, autumn is a great time to tend to the garden so if you need some gentle encouragement to finish your outdoor projects then the team will be on hand to help. Or if you are avoiding the final stages of pruning and tidying then maybe a walk in North Yorkshire is the perfect distraction. Work up an appetite then pop into Bert’s Barrow for some Sunday morning sustenance. Freshly prepared breakfast sandwiches served out of an old horse box might sound unusual but after a fresh autumn morning walk it’s the perfect Sunday treat. HOLY HERITAGE Explore some of Yorkshire’s stunning heritage and history. With some of the most beautiful and awe inspiring architecture in the country, there are some stunning churches worth visiting across Yorkshire.

IDYLLIC SETTINGS Discover Holy Trinity in York with the air of a hidden treasure. It stands in a small, secluded, leafy churchyard, with the impressive York Minster towering above, tucked away behind Goodramgate one of York’s busiest shopping streets. Take a trip to the Yorkshire Coast and visit St. Stephens Old Church in Robin Hood’s Bay. Likened to an old mariner gazing out to sea, St Stephen’s stands majestically on the hillside between Whitby and Ravenscar, overlooking the bay below. Nestling in the grounds of Harewood House, All Saints dates from the 15th century. Six pairs of effigies, dating from 1419 to 1510, commemorating the owners of Harewood and the nearby Gawthorpe estate make it a remarkable place. They are some of the greatest surviving examples of alabaster carving. Whilst visiting the iconic Piece Hall in Halifax, it’s well worth exploring another local landmark. All Souls is one of most magnificent buildings designed by architect Sir George Gilbert Scott with a 72-metre-high spire and dazzling stained glass it is a stunning example of Victorian craftsmanship.

BRIDLINGTON BEACH SOUTH
FLAMBOROUGH HEAD TO NORTH LANDING
Distance: 2 miles This vast flat beach is great for a run around as well as the chance for a swim too. Dogs are welcome throughout the winter but there are restrictions in place from May 1 to September 30. Also visit Bridlington North Beach which has the same restrictions as South Beach from May to September.
Distance: 4 miles This exhilarating walk takes you and your dog to the peaceful cove beach at North Landing which is set cosily within the chalk cliffs of Flamborough Head. On approaching North Landing, dogs can be let off the lead in the open space away from the cliff edge. It is also a great place for relaxing on the stunning beach.
Distance: 4 miles This is a great long beach for you and your dog to run around on and you can stop for a cuppa at various cafés along the way. The whole beach is open for dogs from October 1 to April 30. Bear in mind that parts of the beach are closed to dogs from May 1 to September 30. Watch out for the tides.

FILEY AND THE CENTENARY WAY Distance: 5 miles This interesting route runs along green lanes and through fields along the Centenary Way. Great if you and your dog need more than a run on the beach. Filey is a charming seaside town with a huge beach boasting soft golden sand. The main beach resort is closed to dogs from May 1 to September 30.

Distance: up to 2 miles Open to dogs and their walkers all year round, Runswick Bay is idyllic and picturesque with cliffs at Kettleness Point that jut out into the sea. Shaped like a crocodile’s head, locals say it opens its mouth at night to gobble up stray sailors! Runswick Bay is a picture postcard seaside village with a beautiful beach.
SANDSEND TO WHITBY
Distance: up to 10 miles A favourite with dog walkers, the tide stretches out giving miles of sand to walk either north to Bridlington (three miles) or south to Hornsea (ten miles). Make sure you check the tides here as the sea comes up to the cliffs – walkers can continue along the cliff tops if the tide is in but take care as the cliffs are subject to erosion.

Farmer Copley’s near Pontefract, is one of the top spots for pumpkin picking as it’s home to the UK’s largest patch! Each year, the famous farm shop hosts a Pumpkin Festival, a fantastic event which gives visitors the chance to pick and carve their own fruit, sample spooky Halloween-themed food and even take a barrel ride.
The Whole Hogg situated in the Ryedale Market Town of Pickering has real old fashioned charm, with a warm welcome and staff on hand to guide you to select a real champion. You can pick up your weekly groceries whilst you select this year’s Halloweeny treat. The children will love the animal paddock which includes friendly pygmy goats and llamas.

Cannon Hall Farm in Barnsley, one of the largest farm attractions in the UK, hosts an annual Pumpkin Festival with expert carvers on hand to offer advice and help you create a super scary face. Visit The Balloon Tree in Gate Helmsley near York, where you can take out a wheelbarrow and choose from hundreds of pumpkins to carve a scary face for Halloween. The café is an ideal place to refresh yourself after a busy day’s pumpkin hunting. The Deep, Hull Running until 31st October Haeckel was a German Biologist, Naturalist and Artist who discovered and named thousands of new species. 100 of his images were put together to create 10 volumes of Art Forms of Nature.
