What could be a better legacy from the Tour de France than more children riding bikes? The Yorkshire Bank Bike Libraries are just over a year old but in that short time they have already delivered over 9,000 opportunities to cycle, via skills sessions, safety training, or a leisurely family ride, giving access to bikes for children who might not have one of their own.

The scheme was set up by Cycle Yorkshire and is supported by Yorkshire Bank which provide grants to social enterprise groups. Every Library is different but they all have one aim: offer every child in Yorkshire access to a bike. The scheme was an instant success but we couldn’t have done it without the support of Yorkshire’s cycling family who have donated over 2,500 bikes, which had, until then, sat unloved in sheds and garages across the county. The variety of activities run by the Libraries is huge and there are sessions for all types of cyclist, from nervous teenagers learning to ride to excited primary school children receiving a bike that fits. Quite often a family will donate a bike that’s too small and simply swap it for a new one. In inner city areas, children the Libraries reach out to live in flats, and so they simply don’t have anywhere to store a bike. In those cases, access to a bike stored at the Library is the only chance they have to discover the freedom of two wheels. Many of the Libraries offer led rides for families who wouldn’t normally be able to cycle together (perhaps one of them doesn’t own a bike), or involving family members who need a little extra encouragement. There are currently 22 Bike Libraries and with more to come, they always need new bikes, no matter what condition they’re in. Even the most unloved bike can be brought back to life, and really damaged ones are often used for parts or training mechanics. We do receive a lot of bikes which are in perfect condition and these go straight out to Libraries for a safety check then straight to a child. If you would consider donating an old bike, please have a look at the website where you can find a map and list of all Donation Stations.
